Dianthus EverLast Lilac + Eye (DarwinPerennials from BallFloraPlant)—Despite drought conditions for most of the summer here in the
Ohio River valley near Cincinnati, Ohio, where Horticulture headquarters is located, this new dianthus continues to outperform my expectations! As promised in the plant description, it has been “extremely floriferous in each season.” As I write this it’s mid-September and I still have plenty of pink blooms to enjoy here in Zone 6. The blue-green foliage also adds fresh texture and color to my front-door flower bed. Editor Meghan Shinn’s picks
Agapanthus africanus Summer Sky (Hines)—I love the variegated foli-
age on this lily-of-the-Nile; it’s olive green with white stripes. This plant has a nice compact size, topping out at 18 inches tall, but it blooms big, with two-dozen blue flower heads per stem. I put mine in a burnt-orange container.
Million Bells Bouquet Brilliant Pink (Suntory Collection) —The charming pink
bells have bloomed throughout the summer and now into fall. They are fast growing with no need for deadheading. Their heat tolerance was indeed tested, and they thrived during our summer drought.
Coreopsis verticillata ‘Sweet Marmalade’ (Blooms of Bressingham)—
Buddleia ‘Ice Chip’ (Proven Winners)—My garden is small, so I was
happy with this little butterfly bush that grows just 2 feet tall and 3 feet
wide. White flowers and silver-green and their fruit! What fun we had leaves are very refreshing all summer. harvesting the berries. I’m a big tickseed fan, so I was excited to add this one to the small collection in my garden. This is a natural mutation of the very popular ‘Creme Brulee’. The flowers start deep orange and fade to peach over the summer. Lots of options for color combos!
