Letter from the Director Happy New Year! Hospice Dreams achieved several milestones in the past year. We granted a record number of Dreams and exceeded our goals in fundraising and growth. We also earned some amazing recognition and awards. Here’s a quick look back at 2012: January We began doing business (a legal designation),
as Hospice Dreams, extending our mission to all hospice patients. We were chosen as Charity of the Month by the Signature Room restaurant in downtown Chicago.
February The first issue of the Dreams newsletter is published online via issuu.com March We granted a celebrity Dream when Ben got to meet ex-White Sox player Ron Kittle, and our first comedy show fundraiser raised over $5,000 for Hospice Dreams! We were featured in a major story in the Chicago Tribune titled “Foundations help grown-up dreams come true”. April We had a few interesting dreams this month – Vi took High Tea with her daughters, Juanita had a professional photo shoot and a day of glamour, and Bob went fishing on a pontoon boat. May Passages Hospice held a lemonade stand fundraiser at their corporate offices with proceeds benefitting Hospice Dreams. With the help of a Skype connection we helped Thomas speak and see his relatives in Ireland. June We started working with two new hospice providers,
Hospice and Palliative Care of Northeastern Illinois and BJC Hospice. We granted a celebrity Dream for Michael who wanted to meet Ted Nugent.
July We established our first external Board of Directors to oversee Dream approval and process. We attended the world premiere of Andrew Mahan’s original musical, Colors of Hope in Rockford, IL. Andrew and the cast of Colors of Hope generously donated all the ticket sales from their show along with a painting that was used in the play, worth over $2,000. August Our supporters attended popular summer baseball games through Tix4Cause.com, an easy way to turn extra event tickets into donations to Hospice Dreams.
September We held an open house and ribbon cutting
ceremony at our Bradley office with the Kankakee County Chamber of Commerce. A wine, beer, and food festival hosted by Hidden Cove Sportsplex in Bourbonnais raised about $2,000 in proceeds for Hospice Dreams. We were named the 2012 Midwest Small Charity of the Year by the Stay Classy organization and hosted our first-ever livetweet from the 4th Annual Classy Awards in San Diego. Our first annual Dreams are Ageless golf outing was held at the Kankakee Country Club.
October Dogs had their day at our first annual Barktoberfest event at the River Run Dog Park in Kankakee, IL. November We partnered with American Veterans Motorcycle Riders Association of 2000+ motorcycles to grant Dream for WWII veteran, Archie, including a frontpage story in the local newspaper, the Kankakee Daily Journal. December We granted two Dreams for a husband and
wife, who are both in hospice – a spa day and a helicopter ride! We participated in the Bradley Lighted Christmas Parade with our team-built float. We held our annual Holiday Dreams celebration fundraiser.
We’re setting new goals for 2013 and I’m looking forward to seeing what accomplishments and milestones 2013 will bring to Hospice Dreams. Thank you for your support. Sincerely,
Kansas Swain

Though Craig Markley has been a Madonna fan since he was a young boy, he only had one chance to actually see the pop-diva in concert. Since Madonna wasn’t currently on tour, Craig decided the next best thing would be to hold a screening party of a Madonna concert with his family. When stationed in California with the Navy, Craig developed a penchant for Starbucks Coffee and cheesecake from the Cheesecake factory. The Cheesecake Factory donated a cheesecake was served, and Craig’s enjoyed his favorite Starbucks beverage.
William and his wife used to go out for dinner every week, usually to their favorite local diner or out for pizza. Now unable to travel due to declining health, William’s dream came true when we brought a special lunch and set them up in their own private dining area. William and his wife enjoyed each other’s company along with pizza, pasta and a cake for dessert!
Lunch with Family Earl wanted to visit his family friend’s newly opened restaurant, Busch Gardens Restaurant. Earl enjoyed a cold beer with his family and friends.
Craig sits with his sister watching the show during his Madonna party.

Birthdays! Birthday celebrations are always special occasions - but these are even more important to these families, as they are Dream birthday parties. Each of these parties was made extra special in some way for the Dream recipient. Whether that meant select friends and family attending, a serenade from Elvis, or seeing a grandchild for the first time in many years - these birthdays were truly celebrations in more ways than one!

Archie Rides Again!
Army Veteran Archie Trapp has many memories from his adventures riding a Harley Davidson WLA motorbike in WWII as a signal caller. Archie jumped at the chance to ride a Harley Davidson once again, and Hospice Dreams stepped up to the task with help from the American Veterans Motorcycle Riders Club. Since Archie’s health prevented him from operating the hog himself, a motorcycle outfitted with a sidecar was used. Archie, along with 2,000 other riders, participated in the 14th annual Manteno Veterans Ride which traveled from Tinley Park to the Manteno Veterans Home. Archie was honored with the distinction of being named the honorary road captain and leading the motorcycle parade. In addition to introducing him and presenting him with memorial gifts at the start of the parade, individuals from the organization thanked Archie for his service to the country. Once back and out of his riding gear, we asked Archie what he thought of the ride. With a smile beaming across his face, he said “Oh it was great! 6

Joe’s Flight
Yankee Air Museum’s North American B-25D “Yankee Warrior”
Joe Horvath was a pilot in WWII and wanted to experience f light again. Joe and his wife’s day started at Willow Run Airport, where they got a private tour of the Yankee Air Museum’s hangar. Joe’s wife even got to go into the B-17 bomber plane for a closer look at the plane. During the War, Willow Run was established by Henry Ford and Charles Lindbergh as the largest bomber facility in the world, and it produced over 8,700 bombers. The facility is famous for another historic figure, Rosie the Riveter, who along with 42,000 others, worked assembling planes here. After the tour, the group made its way to Eagle Flight Center at Willow Run Airport for Joe’s flight. Tim Davis, the pilot, spoke with Joe and took him up in the air. Joe was very happy to be in the plane and even got a chance to sit in the pilots seat once again. 10

Joe’s Dream story appeared in the local Fox news station’s broadcast and on myFOXDetroit.com on November 9th.

Lifelong St. Louis Rams fan, Terry Hammond, received the experience of a lifetime when Hospice Dreams took him to the stadium. The day started out with an on-field experience - Terry got to watch the players warm up and practice before the game. He even got to meet and get photographed with the Rams cheerleaders. After grabbing a soft pretzel, it was time to watch the game with his family. Though Terry’s first-ever NFL game ended with his team losing, the experience of fulfilling a 40-year-old dream was the best thing that’s happened to him in a while. Terry said, “I’m overjoyed; past overjoyed! If I die tomorrow, I’ll die a happy man!” Dreams are Ageless

Flying advent ure
G
eorge Doll, WWII Veteran, daredevil, and adventurer had one item on his bucket list that had still gone unfulfilled. He had a life-long dream of flying in a helicopter. George has flown in many aircraft over the years, but the chance to fly in a helicopter had eluded him - until now. On a perfect winter day, George took his first-ever flight in a helicopter. George’s smile went from ear-to-ear during the flight as he watched the frozen landscape stretch out before him across the horizon. When asked what he thought about the flight, George said, “I like looking at all the landscape with the snow on it. It’s really neat!” Dreams are Ageless 13
