Letter from the Director

Rhonda Bouchard - Financial Chair of Hospice Dreams - Office Manager at STARCON INTL. - Citgo Refinery

T

he June heat was sizzling at our community event fundraiser, Taste of Columbia, in Columbia, IL. Hospice Dreams collaborated with local restaurants and pubs to create a special event to bring in locals and tourists to Columbia and raise awareness and funds for Hospice Dreams. It was a success and we are thankful for the support of Columbia’s mayor Kevin Hutchinson and the businesses of Columbia, IL that participated in this event. Earlier this summer you may have received our summer fundraising campaign. The summer season is one of our busiest for granting Dreams, whether it’s for sports, concerts, visits to zoos and parks, or even just a picnic. Donations from supporters like you help grant these dreams in the community - so please consider donating whatever you can to help make someone’s Dream come true!

Evelyn Ice Cream Dream

Thomas Norman is an avid fisherman. Until his health declined, he liked to spend his spare time out-and-about trying to catch the next big fish in the local rivers and waterways. It came as no surprise when he said his Dream was to go fishing one last time. Although it was a cool rainy morning, Thomas was determined to sit under an umbrella, fishing rod in hand, patiently waiting for a bite at the shore of a local pond. His patience and technique were soon rewarded. Thomas was very excited to have made a catch and showed it off for the camera before releasing it back into the pond. “Other Guys” sing for Connie Gonda “Connie” Kostrzewski loves all music, whether it’s the top hits she remembers growing up with to songs from musical theatre. She got the performance of a lifetime when the University of Illinois a capella group “The Other Guys” came by to sing a few tunes for Connie and her friends. They sang a variety of famous melodies for the group and they dedicated the song “My Girl” to Connie, the guest of honor! See the news clip here: http://bit.ly/18geSjQ

Evelyn’s Ice Cream Dream Evelyn Guffey is a home town gal. She missed her old home in Canton, Illinois and her favorite local ice cream shop, and just wanted to spend a day revisiting the places she has so many memories of. On a nice sunny day, Evelyn got her Dream. She stopped by her old home and reminisced with the new owners for a while. The next stop was - Dairy Dream- her favorite snack shop - for onion rings and a lemon shake. The final leg of her hometown tour was a drive through the local park to enjoy the views and beautiful weather. Watch the News clip here: http://bit.ly/16zs5jN

Elk Grove Graphics

The Stanley family of Elk Grove Graphics generously donated Hospice Dreams the printing and mailing of our spring fundraising campagin. Growing up my mom had a dream - for her family to get along and stay together. I guess her dream was fulfilled, as three of her sons (and later, a grandson) have worked together for 35 years. We’ve added to our “family” with many employees who have been with us for more than 20 years.

I read some of the requests that were made and realized that everyone has a dream, no matter how big or small it may be. In some regards, it is the simplest of dreams that become most important in life. That is one of the reasons why we wanted to help.

When my mother was 92 and faced with a terminal condition of cancer, she only wanted to be at home - the home she and my dad shared for 25 years. We called Passages Hospice for help, and we truly appreciated the way they took care of our mom and how they made us feel while we went through a very tough time together.

I invite you to visit the website. Look at what Hospice Dreams is doing for others and how a last request can become a lifetime of memories - not just for the individual, but for the ones that surround them as well.

It had been some time since my mom’s passing when I learned about Passages Hospice’s charity partner, Hospice Dreams. 6

Sporting Events

Any sport, any town! Janet Curless of Havana has been a proud professional wrestling fan her entire life - and everyone knew it, including friends and neighbors. It was hard not to notice when there was a match on because they could often hear Janet cheering at the TV. This was especially true when her favorites, John Cena and Randy Orton were on. Janet and her family arrived at Scottrade Center in St. Louis, and were soon ready for a special meet-and-greet with John Cena! Janet’s face lit up when John walked

Cleveland, Arthur & Mark (hospice staff) pose at the game

Arthur Hawkins, a life-long St. Louis Cardinals fan has watched many games and proudly wears Cardinals red. Arthur’s big Dream was to go to a Cardinals game with his best friend, Cleveland. On a bright summer day, that’s exactly what Arthur got to do! It was the perfect day and a perfect game. When the Cardinals hit a home run, he got out of his chair and started dancing. Best of all, they ended up winning 4-2. Arthur and Cleveland had a great time at the game. Next Page: Leverne visits the Botanic Gardens > 99

G

rowing up, Leverne’s world was filled with shades of green, brightly colored flowers and scents of all kinds. She doesn’t get out to play in the dirt much anymore, but her love of all

things horticultural still runs strong, and she dreamt of enjoying a warm spring day surrounded by the sights and smells of the garden. Leverne was the guest of honor at the Chicago Botanic Garden, where Horticultural Therapist Alicia Green guided her among the plants with an expert’s touch. As a very special treat, Chicago Botanic Garden staff even gave Leverne a bouquet of flowers cut right from the garden!
