DIABETES AND CARDIOVASULAR DISEASES Diabetes is a disease in which the level of sugar in blood is increased over a longer period of time. The sugar disease causes serious health problems that basically arise from damaging to small and large blood vessels and nerves. Few organs suffer in this process, that is, heart, eyes and kidneys, and problems with circulation occur. Depending on the age when diabetes appeared for the first time and the reasons that caused the occurrence of the disease, there is a separation of Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes occurs at younger people and an insulin treatment is needed from the very beginning, while type 2 diabetes occurs at older population. If You already have diagnosis that You suffer from sugar disease, it is necessary, in cooperation with Your doctor, to make a plan how to best deal with the disease. HOW TO LIVE WITH DIABETES 1. Inform Yourself about Your disease! 2. Collect enough information about the sugar disease and the complications that arise from it in order to deal with it more easily 3. Learn ! 4. Learn to recognize the symptoms yourself, of the organs affected from diabetes so you can timely ask for doctor’s assistance. 5. The values you need to know and control on regular basis 6. -HbA1C - glycated hemoglobin indicates the average value of sugar in blood over the past two to three months. The values


below <7 indicate good sugar regulation that should be your goal as well 7. The level of LDL or bad cholesterol should always be below 3,5 mmol/l 8. The upper limit of blood pressure should be up to 130/80 mmHg 9. Hygiene-dietetic regime! 10. Follow the nutrition regimen prescribed by Your doctor. Eat healthy food and maintain Your body weight within normal limits. Food that is recommended: 11. Fruit, vegetable, fish, peas, lentils, skim milk and its products, whole grain bread, unrefined, cold pressed oil, salt and sugar within limited quantities 12. Physical activity! 13. Play sports regularly according to Your age and according to the recommendations of Your doctor. 30-60 minutes brisk walking 4-5 times weekly will significantly improve Your condition. 14. Stop smoking ! 15. Smoking in combination with sugar disease increases the risk of occurrence of cardiovascular diseases multiple times. 16. Regularly take the prescribed therapy even if you feel well! 17. Check Your feet every day, maintain good hygiene and wear comfortable shoes ! 18. Ask for doctor’s assistance every time you feel some change of Your health !
