At Host, one of the largest independent publishing houses in the Czech Republic, we have focused on contemporary Czech and world writing for almost thirty years. The Host brand has become a guarantee of high-quality literature in many genres. We are renowned for the care we take with our editing and the excellence of our graphic design. Our primary aim is to find the right readers for the outstanding books we offer. We take pains to provide ongoing care for our books and their authors after publication. We currently publish about 150 titles annually, in genres including the following: general fiction, SF and fantasy, crime fiction, the thriller, children’s literature, popular science, specialist literature, poetry. Host is proud to publish many leading Czech authors. Their popularity with readers and the wealth of literary awards to come their way confirm us in our belief that painstaking care for a book — from manuscript stage through to the last detail — makes perfect sense. Our authors include Alena Mornštajnová and Kateřina Tučková, whose bestselling works account for hundreds of thousands of copies and have been translated into many languages. Our Czech literature programme comprises all the genres mentioned above. Our literature in translation programme, too, has a great deal to offer. The various stories we take from all over the world are characterized by readability, literary excellence and — last but not least — careful translation. Thanks to us, Czech readers are acquainted with works by authors including Olga Tokarczuk, F redrik Backman, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, B ernardine Evaristo, Nino Haratischwili and Muriel Barbery. Our crime fiction programme is an integral part of what we do. In their chosen setting of criminal investigation, our authors

respond to topical issues — a matter of great importance to us. We regard the publication of the first part of Stieg Larsson’s Millen nium series as a significant moment in our history, for it was this that launched the Nordic noir phenomenon on the Czech market. Our best-performing authors in this genre currently include Lars Kepler, J ussi Adler‑ Olsen and Peter May. In recent years we have strengthened our list by adding SF and fantasy, young adult fiction and children’s literature programmes. As we have no fear of the unexplored, we delight in introducing new trends to the Czech market. The most interesting names on our SF-in-translation list include N. K. Jemisin, Ted Chiang, Anthony Ryan and Liu Cixin; our Czech SF authors, notably Pavel Bareš and Petra Stehlíková, have also performed very well. As for children’s literature, our titles include works by successful authors A leksandra Mizielińska and Daniel Mizieliński, Marianne Dubuc, Emilia Dziubak, Oksana Bula, and Roberto Santiago. Another focus of ours is the high-quality Czech book for children, by which we bring together an original story with great artwork. In terms of society, politics and art, the world is changing in all kinds of ways. Fortunately, we will always have books to capture this change. Some of these you will find on our non‑fiction list. In the K limax series, Host publishes original works on issues of climate change. The history of Host is associated with the literary review of the same name, which first appeared in 1985 as a samizdat antho logy. The Host book-publishing house was established in the 1990s for poetry and literary theory, genres to which it remains true. Since the Nineties, the publishing house has been owned by Miroslav Balaštík, Tomáš Reichel and Martin Stöhr. You can view our books and meet our authors and team at regular events, including author’s readings, panel discussions and book fairs. We take part every year in the interna tional book fairs in Frankfurt, London, Bologna and, of course, Prague, as well as fairs in other parts of the Czech Republic.

Bílá Voda, limpid white water. This is the poetic name of a forsaken village hidden in the shadow of bordering mountains, to which droves of pilgrims once would journey to entreat the miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary for help. It is in this very place, several centuries later, that Lena Lagnerová arrives, seeking a refuge from her own past, which has brought her to the brink of suicide. Instead of a monastery with a large religious community, however, all she finds are a few nuns, led by the idiosyncratic Sister Evarista. Evarista came to Bílá Voda on the last night of September in 1950, when the communist regime carted off all holy sisters to detention convents. Lena soon realizes that the demons haunting the past of the Bílá Voda nuns have not disappeared, and what’s more, play a role in her own destiny. Evarista’s story, along with the fates of the other nuns, are based on real events, which Kateřina Tučková spent many years researching in archives and from among witnesses. In addition to the riveting narrative, Tučková’s novel critically considers the status of women in the Catholic Church, and at the same time, on a symbolic level, the unequal status of women in society as a whole.

Tereza and her husband Eda (who is forty years her senior) live on a fortified farm close to the heavily policed border with Poland. They rarely set foot beyond their home, as the area is no longer safe. Unrest in the nearby city is escalating. Buses keep delivering workers from all over the crumbling European continent and beyond on a giant flatbed trailer. These workers include a young Macedonian called Nikola, who immediately impresses frustrated Tereza. This dangerous relationship will turn her life inside out. Goran and his people are crossing the border with one purpose: to find the Cockroach. This hunt will cause all hell to break loose, and who can say who is an ally, who is an enemy, who is in the right, who started all this, and why? Tereza inadvertently exposes a war crime — a well-concealed humanitarian disaster that affects us more than we can know. ‘It wasn’t my intention to pigeonhole my work, but the climate, social atmosphere and internal contradictions of the world around us affect us whether or not we wish them to. Where do the boundaries lie when those boundaries are our own, and when adopting a child on the other side of the world is not enough?’, wonders the author.

Once upon a time… The Virgin Mary died in Warsaw. Poachers slit the bellies of grouse. Masquerade boots were made from lion paws. Persian gates were closed to caravans. The Full Moon lent to hares so that they could buy furs. The magician Rye crowed over Prague. The Death of Old Masha presents the reader with romantic illusion. Thomas the Apostle warns at the out set: ‘Truth is a story hidden behind legend.’ ‘The Death of Old Masha is ultimately an experiment and a play with genre. It is an attempt to talk about the present as though it happened long ago and has left behind only a remnant of myth. Or perhaps it’s the other way around: an attempt to find a remnant of myth in the present,’ says the author. ‘I try to make my abstractions as general as possible. Fear of the unknown, rejection of difference, our imperialist view on countries of the Third World — I address these and other phenomena as though they were from a different world, by means of alienation and also by placing them against a backdrop of folk literature. The latter may create the impression of great familiarity: whatever our background, we have all read fairy tales and legends.’

His crime thriller Nurse Death / Sestra smrt was published in 2018.

Spotting a doppelgänger brings you bad luck, they say… The writer returns to the theme of family trauma which he explored with such success in his novel The Magpie on the Gallows. published in January

novel hardback

Mickey Watts, a forty-two-year-old lathe operator from Maine in the US who has come to Czechia for his work, is an ordinary guy who gets along with most people but has little excitement in his life. But then, in a corner of Silesia that has seen better days, he catches sight of his doppelgänger. From this night on, Mickey is aware of changes in himself — small ones at first. Physical changes are soon joined by changes in behaviour, with tendencies to suspicion and violence to the fore. Confused, he returns to the States, where he seeks an explanation in his complicated relationship with his overbearing father. But the workings of the human psyche are not so simple. ‘I have addressed the theme of family trauma before, in The Magpie on the Gallows. That I have felt the need to return to it suggests that the therapeutic effect of literature is not as powerful as some people say. I make this claim with tongue in cheek, of course, as well as some relief. In my view, literature should first and foremost be literature,’ says the author.

Philosophical novel that ponders whether the search for the Golden Mean is a virtue. Is moral perfection attainable when all around is relative? to be published in June

novel paperback 184 pages isbn 978-80-275-1085-6

When a café called the Harbour appears before you, your worries are a thing of the past. All you have to do is sit down, order one beverage after another, and gradually transform into a mannequin. Your eternity is beginning! You will be granted bodily perfection and endless peace in the murmuring sea on one condition: you will never speak again. An offer too good to refuse? Perhaps not. Gabriel, one of the café’s customers, is far from clear on what he thinks about this. Then one day, contrary to all expectation, Gabriel disappears, leaving behind five postcards, as a clue to where he has gone. From the world of eternal peace, his ex-girlfriend sets out to find him. In the streets of Prague, however, mannequins change beyond recognition… ‘I was inspired to write about a search by the paradox in Plato’s Meno dialogue,’ says the author of her work. ‘It tells us that search is impossible, for either we know what we are looking for, so there is no need to search for it, or we do not know what we are looking for, so we cannot know where to begin the search. This idea seemed to me both interesting and difficult to apply in everyday life. The book is an attempt to test this paradox in a relationship between two people.’

A man who has lost his wife returns to the place where they spent a holiday together, and where years earlier he shed the illusion of his own blamelessness. Greece and its many scents. A hotel. A strange impassivity and uncertainly within the hero. A change in climate sees him overwhelmed by new ideas, while the influence of ap parent coincidences, wrongs and betrayals twists his life into news shapes. It seems that there is no way home. This is a philosophical work of a kind unusual in the Czech novel. Its love story addresses questions of self-awareness, what our world has become, and workings of the human mind. ‘As a writer, I wish to feel that my work reflects real events and thoughts as processed by the subconscious, then produced by the waking mind in digested, modified, but consistent form,’ says the author. ‘The setting is well known to me; indeed, I wrote much of the book in this place. My mother is Greek, and I’ve felt a close connection with the Greek islands since I was a child. The kind of mental and physical exhaustion and concomitant need to drown in apathy and morbid thoughts that afflict the book’s protagonist, are very well known to me; this place has a similar effect on me.’

Although 1945 brought the end of the war, the evil remained. And it could seek out anyone…

published in March

Jiří Padevět returns with a new collection of the micro stories so popular with readers, casting a different light on the year 1945, portrayed by post-war propaganda as all liberation and bright tomorrows. For many people, war’s end was a time of terror. Such was the chaos of life that no one knew where justice ended and vengeance began, who was a friend and who was an enemy, or where danger lurked and where to hide from it. Padevět’s vivid narratives go beyond the history textbooks, clearing away the printer’s ink to confront the reader with defining moments in the lives of others — individuals who were either broken by the weight of history or succeeded in bearing it. ‘Evil is no abstraction; all of us are evil,’ claims the author. ‘At moments when the law permits, some people are willing to take the lives and property of others.’

A man in slippers opens his front door to his wife’s lover and is confronted by all he has been trying to hide from himself. A sworn bachelor prides himself on his composure while fingering the bottle of self-destruction in his pocket. A forty-year-old accountant lives in her snug little home; some would call it a cage. Viktor Špaček can write characters so alive that we know them from our own lives. These stories are more than pen portraits, however. They aim to express people’s attitudes in certain crucial situations. The characters are mostly captured from their thoughts, as they process problems and traumas with varying degrees of success. That they rarely see beyond their nose is no impediment to continuing belief in their own truth. The solutions they opt for tend to the logical; one might even say the normal. But madness is never far away — a normal state of affairs in itself. ‘For story ideas, I look only within myself,’ says the author. ‘I rely on the changeability of my personality.’

Her name is Nina. She used to draw, but since she married, she finds she no longer can. Why? Her husband has surrounded her with luxury and cleanness to the point of asepticism. She resists having a child with him. She leaves him alone to be with other men and women. She roams — in reality, and in her memories of her unconventional grandmother, who worked as a doctor in Africa. She searches for a way, to the self and to her art. Like the narrator of One Thousand and One Nights, Nina draws the reader into her stories by weaving together past and present. Her evocative confession bombards the senses to sometimes jolting effect; here an erotic passage, there a discussion of the catalogue of the Lefranc Huile paints company. In 2006, Is Soil to Be Eaten? propelled Jakuba Katalpa onto the Czech literary scene and announced her as a presence to be reckoned with. This novella attracted critical acclaim for its play with language, its poetic qualities, and the fluidity of its genre. Although more experimental in its language and composition, this debut work shares many features with the author’s later work, including economy of style, contrasting views of a situation, humour and irony, the unspoken or half-said, and space for the reader’s imagination.
