If you need a break from the ring road, head 30 kilometres north to Vatnsnes peninsula, where you will discover some of Iceland’s best seal and bird watching. Ósar is a haven for nature lovers and history buffs alike. Visit Hvítserkur, a 15 m high sea stack, which resembles a prehistoric dinosaur and famed to be a troll caught by the sunrise. Places close to Ósar, such as Illugastaðir, Þrístapar and others form the scene for the historical and dramatic events of the last public execution in Iceland.
