Hostelling in Iceland 2016-17
Slow Down, Enjoy! 1
Hostelling in Iceland Hostelling International Iceland (HI Iceland) is a non-profit membership organisation established in 1939. HI Iceland is a member of Hostelling International (HI), a worldwide network of over 4000 hostels. Since its inception, HI Iceland’s main goal has been to promote and encourage people of all ages to travel and to increase their knowledge and appreciation of nature and culture. In recent years, HI Iceland has been at the forefront of sustainable tourism in Iceland, and we are constantly aiming for improvements. The main focus of our work is clearly stated in the organisation’s newly approved Mission: To support sustainable and responsible tourism as well as cultural diversity.
Practical Hostel Information All HI Hostels offer various recreation possibilities and many of the hostels book tours that are specially tailored to exploring the area. We advise our guests who are interested in exploring a certain area to contact the nearest hostel for more information. All our hostels have fully equipped guest kitchens where guests can prepare their own meals. Many hostels serve breakfast and some even sell packed lunches. Please check with each hostel for further information. Please be aware that some of our hostels are located far away from a service station or a general store. Check the location of your destination so you will not have problems concerning food or petrol. We ask guests to contact the hostels directly if they plan to arrive after 20:00 since many hostels do not have 24/7 receptions.

Southwest Reykjavík and the Reykjanes area have a lot to offer. Keflavík International Airport is located in Reykjanes, so for most visitors it is the gateway into Iceland. The often barren and bleak landscape gives travellers an example of the magnificent nature that awaits them during their visit in Iceland. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge comes ashore on Reykjanes peninsula. The peninsula, with its diversity of volcanic and geothermal activity, is the only place in the world where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge is visible above sea level. Here you can find 100 different craters, caves and lava fields, a variety of bird life, astonishing cliffs, high geothermal activity, and black sand beaches.
Reykjavík People are often both surprised and impressed that such a small capital as Reykjavík has so much to offer in the way of culture, arts, and activities. Whilst the downtown area of Reykjavík has the highest concentration of cultural institutions, it also has an extraordinary number of tour operators offering everything from volcano tours to diving in the otherworldly waters of Silfra. The entire city is surrounded by countless natural wonders; however, if you’d prefer to discover the nature within the city limits, there are a number of interesting places to explore, and a variety of beautiful parks and gardens. As you’ll soon discover for yourself, Reykjavík is so much more than just a destination; it’s a place of exciting possibilities surrounded by incredible landscapes, where countless adventures beckon and a host of natural wonders await. Whether you’re seeking the bustling energy of our cosmopolitan city, the thundering thermal energy in the ground beneath your feet, or the quiet green serenity of the surrounding landscapes, Reykjavík promises a unique experience for all who visit!

West&Westfjords In West Iceland, the beauty and variety of Icelandic nature is everywhere to be seen. Magnificent views over mountains and glaciers, fertile regions, colourful birdlife, abundant rivers and lakes, fjords and bays, along with gushing geothermal activity. Natural resources are all around. But West Iceland is more than magnificent nature. Land and history form an unbroken whole as the scene of sagas like Sturlunga, Egilssaga, Eyrbyggja, and Laxdæla, as well as being rich in folklore and tales of adventure. Tourist operators go out of their way to make history available to travellers, each in their own fashion. At the same time, new tales of people, trolls, and fairyland creatures are created. Snæfellsjökull National Park was established in 2001. The purpose of the national park is to protect and conserve its landscape and important historical relics, and facilitate travelling in the area. Park rangers operate on-site during the summer months. They provide visitors with instructions and information, and monitor and tend the area as well. Maps of the region are available, both hikers’ maps and maps of the park itself and nature protection areas nearby. Hornstrandir Nature Reserve is a peninsula accessible only by boat or by foot and inhabited only by Arctic foxes, seals, birds, and the occasional hiker. Rauðasandur is one of Iceland’s few large golden beaches, while Vigur Island is one of the country’s few eider duck hotels and home to the smallest post office in Europe (apparently). Every turn brings something new. Every fjord is its own little world. The Westfjords region is home to Látrabjarg; the westernmost point in Europe, and one of the continent’s most remarkable seabird breeding cliffs. These are just a few of the hundred highlights of this wild and surprising area.

NorthIceland North Iceland is a veritable string of jewels, where nature attracts people of all ages. There is a multitude of opportunities for those who want adventurous activities in a true natural paradise. There are untold possibilities for outdoor recreation so that everyone will find something to enjoy: river rafting, horse riding, whale watching, golf, see angling, hiking, and a lot more. During wintertime the north part of Iceland is a skiing paradise in Akureyri, Dalvík, and Siglufjörður areas. On the west side of Húnafjörður, the sea stack of Hvítserkur towers just off the shore; far to the south, nearly at the pass out of North Iceland, Hveravellir adds colour to the highlands with one of the country’s largest geothermal fields. The islands of Málmey and Drangey in Skagafjörður exude folklore, while Eyjafjörður boasts of more magnificent mountains and more prosperous farming communities than one can generally find. The two Þingey counties have nature that is simultaneously rough, mild, and breath-taking, with so many sights you would be hard put to find more natural wonders anywhere else. Take, for example, the waterfalls of Goðafoss and Dettifoss, the latter is Europe’s mightiest. Explore Jökulsárgljúfur, one of the country’s most awe-inspiring canyons. Don’t miss Hljóðaklettar formations and Ásbyrgi, where the rushing waters of Jökulsá river have shaped stark cliffs. Far to the south, Askja epitomises calderas and volcanoes. Although Mývatn and its entire environs are world-famous for their beauty, the lava field Dimmuborgir comprises a wondrous world of its own. The birding trail in the north-east of Iceland goes from Lake Mývatn to Aðaldalur, onwards to Húsavík and along the coast through the peninsulas Melrakkaslétta and Langanes, then to Vopnafjörður and then back to Lake Mývatn. Nearly every area has an outdoor swimming pool, and facilities for tourists are top-notch.

Wander down the shore-side paths up to the moor for unparalleled bird watching, where you can gaze upon the arctic tern, eiders, and even the great northern diver. Nestled at the base of a breath-taking fjord and surrounded by majestic mountains, Siglufjörður HI Hostel is filled with character, vintage details, and cosy common areas. Head out for beautiful walking and hiking trails within minutes of the hostel, hit the slopes at nearby Skarðsdalur, or delve into the town’s history at the Herring Era Museum. If you need a break from the ring road, head 30 kilometres north to Vatnsnes peninsula, where you will discover some of Iceland’s best seal and bird watching. Ósar is a haven for nature lovers and history buffs alike. Visit Hvítserkur, a 15 m high sea stack, which resembles a prehistoric dinosaur and famed to be a troll caught by the sunrise. Places close to Ósar, such as Illugastaðir, Þrístapar and others form the scene for the historical and dramatic events of the last public execution in Iceland. These events are featured in the acclaimed novel Burial Rites. Come and see this beautiful place for yourself!
Surrounded by the enchanting mountains of the Tröllaskagi Peninsula, and bordered by the Arctic Ocean, Dalvík will leave you wanting to stay for just one more night. While the northern town is generally quiet, there is much more to offer than simply hopping on the ferry to Grímsey island, located right on the Arctic Circle. Peak into one of the village’s unique museums, such as the Birdland Exhibition, head out skiing, or book a whale watching tour from the harbour. Situated on the town’s main street, Dalvík HI Hostel is an attractive choice for travellers. Don’t forget to stop by the café called Gísli, Eiríkur, Helgi for a delicious piece of cake and coffee.

Kópasker
In Northeast Iceland, at the edge of the lava field Aðaldalshraun, lies one of the most naturally diverse locations the northern hemisphere has to offer. In Sandur, Aðaldalur, it seems that no matter which way you turn, you are surrounded by lush birch trees, thriving bird life, and stunning views of dramatic mountains and lava formations. Head to Skjálfandi Bay for sublime whale watching, and don’t miss the gorgeous Goðafoss waterfall and the gems of Jökulsárgljúfur National Park: Dettifoss, Ásbyrgi, and Hljóðaklettar. All can easily be reached from Berg HI Hostel, located at the foot of the lava field in Sandur.
On the coast of Öxarfjörður Bay, you’ll discover the small and friendly village of Kópasker. As the gateway to the north-east’s wilderness, Kópasker is a prime location for exploring the natural wonders in the area of Vatnajökull National Park, such as Ásbyrgi, Hljóðaklettar, and Dettifoss. In 1976, Kópasker in particular suffered from a large earthquake, which you can learn about at the Earthquake Centre. If you are more inclined towards wildlife, bird-watching is particularly lively in the area, especially by Melrakkaslétta Peninsula. Kópasker HI Hostel offers quality accommodation with tidy rooms and friendly atmosphere.

EastIceland East Iceland is usually considered the area from Langanes in the north to Almannaskarð in the south. The region is characterised by deep and narrow fjords, vegetation, and widespread forestry, as well as beautiful mountains and highlands. Anyone who likes hiking, outdoor adventures, or simply filling their lungs with unbelievably fresh air will love a visit to the area. East Iceland is Iceland’s best kept secret. It is an expansive, enchanting region, where you can find all of Iceland’s attractive aspects: culture, a flourishing society, endless opportunities for entertainment and outdoor recreation, picturesque nature in all directions, and more natural sights than almost anywhere else. All around, something is offered to suit everyone, such as trips to other towns, out to islands, or into the highlands to view mountains, waterfalls, glacial rivers, volcanic craters, extraordinary landscape, and other geological features. The season of autumn brings its marvellous colours, while winter has its own charm as winter sports take over; the northern lights dance in the cold sky, and darkness itself provides inspiration and spiritual uplifting. The viewpoint indicator at the western extremity of Fjarðarheiði pass (alt. 620 m), between Seyðisfjörður and the lowland around Egilsstaðir, serves as a good indicator when contemplating the panorama of the region. On a clear day, Mount Gagnheiði to the south will provide an even higher vantage point. Hérað - short for Fljótsdalshérað - refers to the broad valley extending and branching south-west inland from Héraðsflói bay. Wild reindeer live only in East Iceland, mostly at higher elevations in summer, but seek lower grassland, closer to the coast, in winter. While their primary habitat is in the deserted expanses by Snæfell, reindeer are seen every year in the territory extending from Vopnafjörður in the north to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon in the south.

Húsey
Reyðarfjörður
If you’ve always wanted to know what life would be like on a rural farm in the north-east of Iceland, Húsey will more than surpass your expectations. Take the scenic 30 kilometres’ drive from the main road, alongside the picturesque Jökulsá á Brú, the longest glacial river in eastern Iceland. Don’t miss the chance to stay at the cosy, pastoral Húsey HI Hostel, located in an area rife with fauna. Hike the nearby trails for plentiful bird watching, watch seals sunbathe in the river, or discover even more of the east on horseback; riding tours are available from the hostel. Be sure to bring your own supplies as Húsey is as remote as it gets!
Located next to Iceland’s widest eastern fjord, Reyðarfjörður is a serene town with its past entrenched in Norwegian whale hunting and British occupation. Nowadays, it is a lovely place to relax, hike, fish, and take in the powerful beauty of nature. Seyðisfjörður
Berunes
Historically a trading centre and fishing village, Seyðisfjörður is cradled at the end of a long fjord and sheltered by impressive snow-capped mountains. With gushing waterfalls, and vibrantly coloured timber houses, the sight of Seyðisfjörður is as if from a painting; a logical location for the internationally acclaimed TV series Trapped. Appropriately, the art scene is rich with galleries, museums, and arts and crafts markets. Don’t miss the bold, blue church that holds jazz and folk music concerts, or the good variety of restaurants in Seyðisfjörður; ranging from cafés to the more elegant Nordic Restaurant, and Norð Austur Sushi & Bar. Be sure to stay at Seyðisfjörður Hafaldan HI Hostel, with locations in the Old Hospital and Harbour Building.
With a spectacular mountain range on one side and a tranquil seafront on the other, Berunes truly has the best of both worlds. Berunes offers beautiful vistas and unbeatable hiking opportunities. Stay at the charming Berunes HI Hostel, located on the north side of Berufjörður fjord. Here, you will find a large collection of books, as well as free Wi-Fi. Relax, enjoy the remote location, and treat yourself to the renowned pancake breakfast at the Gestastofan family restaurant next door. Not only is Berunes a fantastic place to stay close to the ring road, but also a tranquil destination in and of itself.

travellers. Everything that makes Iceland interesting to visit can be found in South Iceland all year around. History surrounds you everywhere, both ancient and recent. Other highlights include art, culture, flourishing trade, and endless possibilities to enjoy outdoor life in all seasons. But above all, there is the awesome and rugged nature stretching from the mountains and down to the sea.
Vatnajökull
The south of Iceland has some of the country’s most diverse nature. Glaciers, volcanoes, volcanic islands, geothermal areas, glacial rivers, black sands, vast meadows, marshes, lakes of all sorts, untouched highlands, and long black beaches. Many places have become well known for their beauty and wonder, including the waterfalls Gullfoss, Háifoss, Seljalandsfoss, and Skógafoss. The south is rich with geothermal energy and is also home to the famous Geysir; its name has become a synonym for erupting hot springs in several languages. The area surrounding Geysir has been designated a protected area.
