Southwest Capital and Reykjanes area. The Reykjavik and Reykjanes area have a lot to offer. The international airport is located in the Reykjanes area so for most visitors it is the gateway into Iceland. Its often barren and bleak landscape gives travellers an example of the magnificent nature that awaits them during their visit in Iceland. The Mid-Atlantic ridge comes ashore on the Reykjanes peninsula. The peninsula, with its diversity of volcanic and geothermal activity, is the only place in the world where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge is visible above sea level. Here you can find 100 different craters, caves and lava fields, a variety of bird life, astonishing cliffs, high geothermal activity, and black sand beaches. Below are a few selections of interesting geothermal hotspots and attractions located in this area. People are often both surprised and impressed that such a small capital as Reykjavik city has so much to offer in the way of culture, arts and activities. Whilst the downtown area of Reykjavík has the highest concentration of cultural institutions, it also has an extraordinary number of tour operators offering everything from volcano tours to diving in the otherworldly waters of Silfra. The entire city is surrounded by countless natural wonders; however, if you’d prefer to discover the nature within the city limits, there are a number of interesting places to explore and a variety of beautiful parks and gardens. As you’ll soon discover for yourself, Reykjavík is so much more than just a destination; it’s a place of exciting possibilities surrounded by incredible landscapes, where countless adventures beckon and a host of natural wonders await. Whether you’re seeking the bustling energy of our cosmopolitan city, the thundering thermal energy in the ground beneath your feet, or the quiet green serenity of the surrounding landscapes, Reykjavík promises a unique experience for all who visit!

West&Westfjords In West Iceland the beauty and variety of Icelandic nature is everywhere to be seen. Magnificent views overlooking mountains and glaciers, fertile regions, colourful birdlife, abundant rivers and lakes, fjords and bays, along with gushing geothermal activity. Natural resources are all around. But West Iceland is more than magnificent nature. Land and history form an unbroken whole as the scene of sagas like Sturlunga, Egilssaga, Eyrbyggja and Laxdæla, as well as being rich in folklore and tales of adventure. Tourist operators go out of their way to make history available to travellers, each in their own fashion. At the same time, new tales of people, trolls and beings of adventure are created. Snæfellsjökull National Park, was established in 2001. The purpose of the national park is to protect and conserve its landscape and important historical relics, and facilitate travelling in the area. Park rangers operate on site during the summer months. They provide visitors with instruction and information and monitor and tend the area as well. Maps of the region are available, both hikers ‘maps and maps of the park itself and nature protection areas near by. The Hornstrandir nature reserve is a peninsula accessible only by boat or by foot and inhabited only by Arctic foxes, seals, birds and the occasional hikers. Rauðasandur is one of Iceland’s few large golden beaches, while Vigur island is one of the country’s few eider duck hotels and home to the smallest post office in Europe (apparently). These are just a few highlights of the wild and surprising area. A few highlights among hundreds. Every turn brings something new. Every fjord is its own little world. The Westfjords region is home to Látrabjarg; the westernmost point in Europe, and one of the continent’s most remarkable seabird breeding cliffs.

NorthIceland North Iceland is a veritable string of jewels, whose nature attracts people of all ages. On the west side of Húnafjörður, the rock arch of Hvítserkur, towers just off the shore; far to the south, nearly at the pass out of North Iceland, Hveravellir adds color to the highlands with one of the country’s largest geothermal fields. The islands of Málmey and Drangey in Skagafjörður exude folklore, while the people of Eyjafjörður boast of more magnificent mountains and more prosperous farming communities than one can generally find. The two Þingey counties present nature that is simultaneously rough, mild and breathtaking, with so many sights you would be hard put to find more natural masterpieces anywhere else. Take, for example, the waterfalls of Goðafoss and Dettifoss, the latter Europe’s mightiest. Downstream from Dettifoss, explore Jökulsárgljúfur, one of the country’s most awe-inspiring canyons. Here can be found the Hljóðaklettar formations and Ásbyrgi, where the rushing waters of the Jökulsá river have shaped stark cliffs. Far to the south, Askja epitomizes calderas and volcanoes. Although Mývatn and its entire environs are world-famous for their beauty, the cliffs of Dimmuborgir comprise a wondrous world of their own. North Iceland offers a multitude of opportunities for those who want adventurous activities in a true natural paradise. There are untold possibilities for outdoor recreation, so that everyone will find something to enjoy; river rafting, horse riding, whale watching, golf, see angling, hiking and a lot more. During winter time the north part of Iceland is a skiing paradise with Akureyri, Dalvík and Siglufjörður areas. The Birding trail in Northeast of Iceland goes from Lake Mývatn, to Aðaldalur to Húsavík and by the coast through the peninsulas Melrakkaslétta and Langanes, to Vopnafjörður and then back to Lake Mývatn. Nearly every area has an outdoor swimming pool, and facilities for tourists are top-notch.

EastIceland East Iceland is usually considered the area from Langanes in the north to Almannaskarð in the South. The region is characterized by deep and narrow fjords, vegetation and widespread forestry as well as the beautiful mountains and highlands. Anyone who likes hiking, outdoor adventures or simply just filling their lungs with unbelievably fresh air will love a visit to the East. East Iceland is Iceland’s best kept secret. It is an expansive, enchanting region, where you can find all of Iceland’s attractive aspects, culture and a flourishing society, endless opportunities for entertainment and outdoor recreation, picturesque nature in all directions and more natural sights than almost anywhere else. All around, something is offered to suit everyone, such as trips to other towns, out to islands, or into the highlands to view mountains, waterfalls, glacial rivers, volcanic craters, extraordinary landscape and other geological features. The season of autumn brings its marvellous colours, while winter has its own charm, as winter sports take over, the northern lights dance in the cold sky, and the darkness itself provides inspiration and spiritual uplifting. The viewpoint indicator at the western extremity of Fjarðarheiði pass (alt. 620 m.) between Seyðisfjörður and the lowland around Egilsstaðir, serves as a good indicator when contemplating the panorama of the region. On a clear day, Mount Gagnheiði to the south will provide an even higher vantage point. The “Hérað” -colloquially short for “Fljótsdalshérað”- has long referred to the broad valley extending and branching sw. inland from Héraðsflói bay. The wild reindeer live only in East Iceland, mostly at higher elevations in summer but seek lower grassland, closer to the coast in winter. While their primary habitat is in the deserted expanses by Snæfell, reindeer are seen every year in the territory extending from Vopnafjördur in the north to the Glacier Lagoon in the south.

SouthIceland The South of Iceland is unique and it is the part of the country visited by far the greatest numbers of foreign travellers. Everything that makes Iceland interesting to visit can be found in South Iceland all the year round. History surrounds you everywhere, both ancient and recent. Other highlights are creative art, culture, flourishing trade and endless possibilities to enjoy outdoor life in all seasons. But above all there is the awesome and rugged nature stretching from the mountains and down to the sea. In all seasons of the year tourists can find something to their liking. In winter the sun is reflected on the pearly white snow, on long dark winter nights the northern lights dance around the starlit sky and the moon wanders through the clouds. At such times beauty, peace and quiet reign, unforgettable to those who experience it. Trips across the highlands as well as the lowlands are an indescribable adventure during both summer and winter. The farmers mind their farms. All the year it is busy in the country, and in spring the land is covered with its summer foliage. Life outdoors and trips assume a new form: hiking tours, riding trips, angling in rivers and lakes. Nature takes on a new look: hot springs, lava fields, volcanoes, waterfalls, the highlands, glaciers, rivers and lakes. All life is reborn after the frosts of winter and the countryside is at its most beautiful. The south of Iceland has some of the country’s most diverse nature. Glaciers, volcanoes, volcanic islands, geothermal areas, glacial rivers, black sands, vast meadows, marshes, lakes of all sorts, untouched highlands and long black beaches. Many places have become well known for their beauty and wonder, including the waterfalls Gullfoss, Háifoss, Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. The south is rich with geothermal energy and is also home to the famous Geysir, whose name has become a synonym for erupting hot springs in several languages. The area surrounding Geysir has been designated a protected area.

We are dedicated to Quality and Sustainability In an on going effort through HI Iceland’s Mission to provide quality and sustainable travel experience for all, it gives us pleasure to offer travellers the highest standards in budget accommodation, inspirational social places where we are always striving to meet and exceed our guests’ expectations by providing comfortable facilities, unique services and a memorable experience based on sustainable strategies, policies and practices. It is our policy to serve customers the best way and to aim for the highest possible customer satisfaction in our Hostels. HI Iceland’s Quality & Sustainability standards will ensure you a safe, clean and comfortable stay, and a good level of services and facilities in all icelandic HI Hostels. In addition to the Quality & Sustainability Assured Standards, HI Iceland actively encourages its Hostels to go even further to improve their practices and therefore several Quality and Environmental Systems are being used throughout the network:

HI-Q, the HI Quality Management System, takes ‘best practices’ from quality systems around the world and tailors them to the specific needs of HI associations and Hostels. The certification proves that all processes and their quality level within the organization are therefore documented, trained, constantly communicated within the team, checked, measured and if needed, improved. Swan, the Nordic Ecolabel is the official Ecolabel of the Nordic countries. The eco-certificate is based on rigorous criteria and demonstrates that a product or service is a good environmental choice. HI Iceland has developed its own internal policy which actively encourages high standards of

awarded the privilege of being called Green Hostels, allowing them to use an environmental logo, which HI-Iceland issues. It is important to note that this is not a recognised environmental certification but standards that HI Iceland decides and supervises with the support of an external consulting agency which audits the Hostels and approves the certification. Because of their diversity, the Green Hostels have created interesting ways which work well for their location and surroundings in order to decrease their environmental impact, so don’t be surprised if you find different practices at the Hostels. HI Iceland is committed to support sustainable tourism and responsible travelling in Iceland

HI Iceland’s first Environmental Policy was created in 1999 and it is currently being updated and transformed into a Sustainability Charter. By working on our sustainable quality we choose to contribute towards a style of travelling that increases people’s knowledge of their environment, concern for nature and respect for the cultural values of cities and towns in all parts of the world. We kindly ask our guests to take part in the sustainable practices at the Hostels and as well when travelling in our fragile icelandic nature. Check out our “green travel tips” on www.hostel.is We highly value your opinion and we kindly ask you to leave your feedback on the special comment cards available at each Hostel, on online platforms or just sent us an email at info@hostel.is. HI Iceland’s commitment to quality and sustainability has received numerous awards and recognitions over the past years. In 2014, our Reykjavík Loft Hostel has been rated as the Best Hostel in the world by HI customers worldwide, followed by Reykjavík Downtown Hostel, rated as the 2nd best in 2014. Moreover, all 3 Reykjavík Hostels are proudly certified by the Swan, the Nordic Ecolabel and they have also been recognized as GreenLeaders by Tripadvisor, all carrying the Gold Level. Another 17 Hostels in HI Iceland are recognized as Green Hostels: Akranes, Berunes, Bíldudalur, Broddanes, Dalvík, Gaulverjaskóli, Grundarfjörður, Húsey, Kópasker, Laugarvatn, Ósar, Reyðarfjörður, Seyðisfjörður, Sæberg, Vagnsstaðir, Vík and Ytra Lón.
