Student Spotlight Inside

Saturday Jan. 6, 1 pm Wednesday, Jan. 10, 6 pm Wednesday, Jan. 17, 6 pm

Student Spotlight: Edwin Molina is possible; as long as you’re alive, age is nothing but a number. “As longAnything as you have motivation and drive, you can move forward in any field. ” When he and his family moved to the United States from Ecuador, seeking better opportunities, seven-year-old Edwin could not even imagine the journey that lay ahead of him, marked by challenges and triumphs that made it even more remarkable. For years, Edwin worked diligently as a technician at New York Sports Club, where his father’s friend had taken him under his wing and introduced him to the intricate world of motors and mechanics. He was responsible for repairing industrial machines sent in by gyms all over the city, some as massive as trains. It was a role that required hands-on work and learning, both aspects Edwin thrived in.

Edwin's journey at Hostos was further enriched by dedicated teachers who brought their unique perspectives to the classroom. Edwin specifically mentions Bill Rossiter, the OSHA instructor, who not only imparted knowledge but also shared valuable life experiences that inspired and connected with Edwin. “We related to him. He was one of my favorite teachers.” He also speaks highly of the hands-on trade classes that provided real world training and knowledge to the students. But what truly made his experience at Hostos unforgettable were the friendships he formed with fellow students. Coming from various backgrounds and ages, they all nonetheless connected on a deep level, supporting each other through the program and beyond.

I'd been praying, and

I asked for something good to come my way. I'm due

for something good.

But life took an unexpected turn when COVID-19 swept the nation in 2020. On March 16th, Edwin experienced his last day at New York Sports Club, as the pandemic shuttered gyms and fitness centers. Little did he know that this adversity was to be a catalyst for a true transformation. One fateful day, while on an errand to pay his grandmother’s rent who lived in Phipps Houses, he crossed paths with someone who would change the course of his life. The stranger asked if he wanted a job and introduced him to the Phipps Neighborhood’s Career Network Building Services program, conducted in Hostos Community College. It felt like a ray of hope after a dark storm. Edwin says, “I'd been praying, and I asked for something good to come my way. I'm due for something good.” The path to this new opportunity was not without hurdles. “I was 40 years old at that time. It had many years since I have been in a school setting, so going back into the classroom was”, Edwards laughs, “an experience. I loved it, I really did.” The prospect of returning to an academic setting was daunting, but he embraced it with an open heart and a hunger for learning. He attended every class, asked questions, took notes diligently, and was determined to grow through this wonderful opportunity.

The program equipped Edwin with 9 certifications, including OSHA 30 and site safety, preparing him for a career focused on excellence and safety. Edwin excelled in the program, earning him the distinction of being one of the top students. With his training at Hostos and the resources from Phipps, Edwin secured a high-paying job at Apex Place in Forest Hills, Queens, which not only offered financial security for him and his family, but also a sense of personal accomplishment. As Edwin reflects on his journey, he has a message for others: "Anything is possible; as long as you’re alive, age is nothing but a number. As long as you have motivation and drive, you can move forward in any field.” He encourages everyone to stay resilient in the face of adversity and to remember that there are people willing to help others succeed, like those he found at Hostos and Phipps. Edwin's story is a testament to the power of perseverance, lifelong learning, and the belief that a job should be a source of passion and enthusiasm. His journey and success serve as a reminder that determination along with appropriate support can lead to remarkable achievements. Edwin’s thirst for learning continues to motivate him to reach ever higher with the tools that training at Hostos prepared him for. He is confident in his abilities and is excited to continue to work towards his future goals to make them a reality. Edwin Molina Career Network: Building Services, Fall 2023 Hostos CEWD

Inclusivity

INCLUSIVITY at CUNY, Hostos and CEWD The City University of New York (CUNY), Hostos Community College (Hostos) and the Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development (CEWD) \welcomes, develops and advances a diverse mix of individuals. It is about making people feel valued and insuring everyone has the same opportunity to learn, advance and create change.

CUNY, Hostos and CEWD are committed to maintaining a prejudice, discrimination and harassment - an environment that supports, nurtures and rewards educational and career advancement based on ability and performance. People are treated fairly and with respect.

Hostos is committed to ensuring a discriminatory free environment, where all persons are treated fairly and with respect regardless of their protected status. The Office of Compliance and ZDiversity (“OCD”) is dedicated to promoting an open and inclusive environment, addressing complaints as they arise, creating initiatives which support diversity and awareness and ensure that the college complies with all applicable policies and laws.
