Student Spotlight: Sorangel Mena
Sorangel has always been an ambitious and determined person, overcoming whatever obstacles life brings. Although she completed high school in the Dominican Republic, she realized she would need to complete her General Equivalency Diploma (GED) in order to pursue her ultimate goal— a career in healthcare.
CEWD had an overwhelmingly positive impact on her education. This experience encouraged her to continue pursuing her studies.
Sorangel enrolled in The Hostos Division of Continuing Education & Workforce Development’s (CEWD) GED program. She found the support she received from her instructors and the program coordinators to be invaluable. Sorangel appreciated both the pace of the instruction and the guidance she received while enrolled in the GED program. She believes Hostos
After earning her GED in Fall 2023, she enrolled in the CUNY Language Immersion Program (CLIP) at Hostos. Upon completing CLIP, Sorangel decided to enroll in the Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) Certificate program at Hostos. As a part-time student at Hostos, she is balancing running her own business and pursuing her LPN certificate. Sorangel’s ultimate goal is to work in a hospital as an LPN.

Employer Spotlight: Towne Nursing
Since 2017, The Hostos Division of Continuing Education & Workforce Development (CEWD) has had the pleasuring of collaborating with Towne Nursing Staff Inc. to help place hundreds of our Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) graduates in jobs. Established in 1991, Towne Nursing’s goal is to deliver “excellent and professional staff to nursing homes and long-term care facilities in need.” Ben Leifer, the Director of Customer Relations for Towne Nursing, has personally worked with Hostos CEWD to hire CNAs since 2018. He has seen many Hostos CEWD graduates become part of fulfilling the company’s mission to enhance the quality of life for residents at the facilities they partner with.
Ben highly recommends Hostos CEWD as a training provider. “Where Hostos stands out in my mind versus other programs is really the time they take to develop soft skills in students,” he said. “The teachers and the curriculum are amazing in preparing people, not just as a CNA, but as an employee in the workforce.” He spoke highly of Hostos CEWD as a partner and hopes to continue fostering this relationship in the future.
