“
Age is not a limitation or the language for one to achieve success, the limits are in the head and we must have the strength to break them.
”
Ms. Lucíano can be described as many things; mother, educator, advocate, and testament to the everyday support of Hostos Community College’s teaching staff. Certainly she could be described as someone whose efforts and motivation did not go unnoticed. Emigrating to the US in 2010 at 40 years old, she came for the promise of higher career attainment, and a better future for her four children. Upon arriving, she made a firm commitment to herself to pursue a professional career, not only to provide for them, but to serve as an example.
Ms. Lucíano endured many bumps and bruises on her way to her degree, and had to take time off periodically, always vowing to return. In winter, 2020, she attained three educational certifications from the Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development: • DASA (Dignity for All Students Act) • Training in the Recognition & Reporting of Child Abuse & School Violence Prevention • Training in the Needs of Students with Autism Workshop* (see page 39 for more information)

Knowledge does not take up space and if you want to make a difference, take the first step to success by preparing yourself in education because

give to your children and yourself. —Nancy Lucíano
She began by taking English classes at the local community center where her instructor encouraged her to enter college. She managed to get into a private college but found the situation less than ideal, leading her to Hostos, which coincidentally was the name of her first college in the Dominican Republic. She was accepted into the CUNY Language Immersion Program (CLIP) and immediately felt more at home. Crediting the guidance of Jeanette Miranda, Hostos Humanities lecturer, she was able to enroll in degree classes a year later in 2015.
Finally, in Spring, 2021, she was able to graduate with an Early Childhood Education degree. She credits god, the support of her children and family, and an “angel”: Karina Guardiola, who served as Ms. Luciano’s student success coach through the years. Ms. Guardiola was “always aware of me and my mental and emotional development.” She also credits Professors Sonia Maldonado, Carlos Acevedo, Connie Morales and countless others who provided emotional and professional support, and who always had a word of encouragement for her. Going forward, Ms. Lucíano wants to motivate other immigrants by imparting her experience: “…it {doesn’t} matter where you come from in life what matters is where you make it.” She is currently working at a daycare center while preparing to enter Lehman College for a teaching degree, continuing on her CUNY journey of fulfilling her dreams.
