Student-Centered Tutoring = Minimalist Tutoring = Non-directive Tutoring “Tutors should not consider it their primary job to dispense knowledge. Rather than treating students like empty receptacles that need to be filled with information, they should be treated as individuals who bring a wealth of personal experience and knowledge to the table when they meet with a tutor. Therefore, the student should be invited to help set the direction and pace of the tutoring session” (North Seattle Community College ). Resistance to Using Student-Centered tutoring approaches 1) The student believes that the tutor is the expert and is solely responsible for telling him or her what to write. 2) Tutors adopt the attitude of “savior” for the student and take control of the session to guarantee student success. 3) Students do not have sufficient background information to decode the essay question or assignment requirements on their own.
