INTERVIEW 4
Hot Brands Cool Places spoke with Ben Norris, UK Managing Director, George Smith Ltd. for an exclusive interview How important is the George Smith heritage to the current business? George Smith prides itself on making every piece of furniture by hand at our factory in the North East of England. Every item is made using traditional techniques which have been passed down through generations of craftsmen and upholsterers. Each sofa, chair and stool is made to the exact specifications of the client, either to one of our standard designs or using our bespoke service. We feel that our clients have a very positive response to the fact we are a British company and that the traditional methods we use to construct the furniture produces an exceptional quality of product. The fact that the techniques have been proven to stand the test of time means that our furniture appeals to both people buying for their own homes and those looking for furniture in high use areas such as hotels, bars and restaurants. How do you manage the balance between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design? One of the advantages of using the traditional hand-crafted techniques is the versatility that it offers us. This means that we can offer our clients the very highest quality in terms of construction and also the flexibility to meet their design brief. We have a number of more contemporary pieces in our collection, and have also been commissioned to make modern designs for domestic and commercial settings. In many ways, the fact we are not constrained by a sole dependence on machines in the manufacture of our furniture means that we are able to keep up to date with the most modern and innovative of designs and concepts. What have been the recent highlights for the business? We have had many recent highlights– including the launch of our new Outdoor furniture collection (which looks just like our standard collection but is completely weatherproof), our involvement with the Gloriana for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the completion of a number of large projects including the restaurant and bar areas of the Limewood Hotel in Hampshire and the installation of the furniture into the latest addition to the Soho House family, Little House in Mayfair. The Outdoor furniture collection highlights that although we still make use of the best of the traditional techniques – we are also keen to embrace and push forward with modern innovation. 5
What are your own personal favourites in your range? For sofas it has to be the Fixed Back Signature Sofa with the classic standard (often called ‘pea’ arm) and the Early Victorian Chesterfield. They often two different types of comfort and are two of our most enduring designs. For chairs it is the Button Back Scroll Arm. I particularly love the buttoning. Every button shows the quality of our work. How would you like to see the brand developing? There are two main areas of development for us. One is to continue the work we have done with some of the leading hospitality companies in the UK – and for George Smith furniture to be found all of the best hotels and bars in the UK and beyond. We are also currently working on a number of other ranges and products to develop the brand beyond our core offering. This will enable our clients to have elements of George Smith beyond our sofas and chairs – and even expand the age range of our client base... When the weekend finally comes what do you do to relax? I have always enjoyed running and have run a number of marathons. More recently I have evolved this interest beyond running and now participate in Triathlons. http://www.georgesmith.co.uk/

INTERVIEW
10
Hot Brands Cool Places spoke with Sarah Trotter, Founder of Squirrel Design Ltd for an exclusive interview. What inspired you to start Squirrel Design? With a young family of our own we wanted to inspire our children, and other families, to spend more time in the great outdoors - to use their imagination and be able to enjoy the magic of tree houses and hideaways. We realised that the appeal of the traditional tree house extended far beyond play opportunities and could introduce new possibilities for everyone to experience a whole new type of escapism in amongst the trees… How do you begin to create your designs? We listen carefully to each individual client and establish exactly what the requirements are: a tree house for their children’s adventure play, or for the whole family to enjoy, or perhaps a secluded outdoor room for adults or groups to entertain, work or rest. We assess the suitability of the site and trees for the different options for construction (tree or self-supporting) and pay close attention to the whole outdoor setting: each structure must sit comfortably within its environment and look as if it is meant to be there – as if it has always been there. We then come away and put together our proposal drawings and plans for each individual project and work with the client to reach the perfect final solution. What are some of the most unusual designs you have made? A tree house created for the whole (large) family with different spaces for different people: a separate secret den raised up in the boughs of the tree for Dad & his son to camp out in; a hideaway tree house area with trap door and rope ladder for the smaller children, and a wonderful secluded balcony area, with stunning views across the surrounding landscape, for Mum to escape to for some privacy and peace. A tree house wrapped around a large oak with a special viewing balcony and windows looking out onto the countryside where a resident herd of wild deer live. Ideal for watching nature at its best. A ground based Eco retreat with a carefully handcrafted curving roof extending over the balcony, used for retreats, meditation and also nature watching for groups of local school children. What do adults want in their houses to make them a cosy retreat? Warmth – created by a wood burning stove or even underfloor heating! A sense of privacy and escapism, whether created by positioning the tree house amongst woodland or simply by being raised up off the ground and amongst the branches: it’s surprising how little people look UP – we spend a great deal of time with our noses down and eyes focussed on the ground. “Woofly” rugs, throws and blankets, and perhaps a soft rug or two underfoot. Full luxury can be achieved with all power and amenities: sleeping in a bedroom in a tree house is difficult to beat. An ensuite bathroom is the icing on the cake! 11
If you could design your dream tree house what would it look like? Natural, with a mixture of textures in the materials used; asymmetrical if I was feeling creative, simple and classic if I was feeling nostalgic. It would be in a secret corner of my garden or, if luck was walking my way, in my small woodland overlooking a small steam meandering by. A balcony with subtle strands of rope railings to give me the best view ever, and most definitely a basket on a pulley for hauling up “provisions” for my extended stay. A woodburner for warmth, with a hide rug on the floor in front of it and a bed in one corner. Plenty of windows for maximum natural light and exposed roof rafters up above me……dreams are wonderful things. What makes a perfect weekend for you? Being by the sea – preferably on a rugged coastline – more dramatic. A bit of discovery for Saturday morning – a local market, or a wander around a few hidden corners. A decent cup of coffee, at least one good cliff top walk with the dogs (and maybe husband!) and an amble along the beach. An evening with a large glass of wine and then a jolly good lie-in on Sunday, before a proper English roast. In the ideal world this would involve some quality time with my dispersed family at some point, and a moment or two with valued friends. Nothing so out of the ordinary but the simplest of things keep the soul sound. http://www.squirreldesign.co.uk/

Hot Brands Cool Places spoke with Rupert Longsdon, Founder of The Oxford Ski Company for an exclusive interview.
INTERVIEW 18
How have you developed the brand since you first founded the company? From the first years of just offering a handful of holidays in Crans-Montana in Switzerland and Meribel in France. We now work in the top 40 resorts in the world covering France, Switzerland, Austria, Italy and North America. Japan is next! What do you look for when you select your properties? A combination of the quality of the property and the level of the service must match the price they are asking. What changes have you seen in customers’ expectations since you founded The Oxford Ski Company? From a materialistic side in 1998 it was rare and exciting to have an outdoor Jacuzzi. Now an indoor pool is regularly a minimum requirement. However this means nothing without looking after the clients professionally and efficiently at all times. The main expectation is good old personal customer service. What are the popular locations for 2013? St Anton and Lech in Austria are in popular demand as a lot of people have not tried Austria. Zermatt continues to have great appeal and Megeve seems to be getting itself back on the map with a resurgence of superb chalets coming to the market. How would you like the company to develop in the future? We are continuing to expand our portfolio of the best chalets, lodges and hotels for skiing. The main exciting new development is our non ski brand OS Private Travel offering our same expertise and level of service but with the best private villas across the Mediterranean and Caribbean. This is a separate team in the office so even though we may be sharing clients we are not diluting their knowledge with snow and ski information. These guys love beaches and sunshine! If you could take a holiday in each of the seasons where would you go? Winter – The Alps – a two week tour driving and staying in many different resorts Spring – Safari in Kenya Summer – The west coast of Scotland Autumn – Sailing around Raj Ampat Islands, Indonesia www.oxfordski.com www.osprivatetravel.com

INTERVIEW
Hot Brands Cool Places spoke with Charlie Marshall, Founder of Loaf for an exclusive interview What are some of the interesting stories behind your products? Having lost a whole Saturday trying to buy a new bed and a mattress, I decided to make the shopping experience as hassle free, affordable and as speedy as possible. So two years, 187 mattress factories and some seriously comfy beds later, Loaf was born. We’re obsessed with comfort and the idea is that we’ve done all of the testing so that the customer doesn’t have to. If there’s one thing we Brits still do well it’s making mattresses. First of all mattresses are big bulky items which means financially it doesn’t make sense to be shipping them halfway across the world. And secondly, it just so happens that the key ingredients of a darn good mattress (pocket springs and wool) all come from Blighty. Handmade in Wiltshire, our mattress contains 1400 British individual pocket springs and it’s packed with natural, breathable fillings like cotton so you won’t overheat - unlike memory foam. It’s then covered in finest Irish damask. When it comes to making pretty much the finest mattress known to humanity, our mattress man Louis is the don. He’s a no-nonsense, straight-talking gem of a man and he’s got good reason to say what he thinks: he’s been making nothing but mattresses and divan bases for over 30 years. Tucked away in the Wiltshire hills, he is a real find. We like to work with family run companies with a similar ethos to our own. With the extended range how do you know if a product is right for Loaf? I have three sisters, both of whom have lovely homes and very good taste. Everything Loafy has to be vetted by them before it makes the final cut! Also, I’m involved in a big part of the design process and work alongside our in-house design team to create something that is nice and that isn’t going to blow the bank for our customers. Starting with pulling out tear sheets for inspiration, sketching, passing on photos of things I like to our designer Mister Steve, visiting suppliers, testing the products, art directing our shoots and I also ask the question if I would have a new design in my own home. Overall comfort, style and quality are the most important elements. Our ultimate aim is to be better value than the high street to meet the demand for high quality, well designed goods at lower prices. Do you have any personal favourites in the new range? One of my favourites is our new Crumpet sofa, so much so that I have just ordered one for home. I went for upholstery in our vintage linen fabric in the large size so there will be enough room for me, my wife and our two kids to loaf about together. Crumpet is slightly deeper than bog standard sofas making it super-comfy and the design is a nice twist on a more traditional style. It just works. Our Zinc kitchen table which is part of our new spring/summer 2013 collection is a real winner. Made from sustainable mango wood with a metal top we worked really hard to get the design just right. It’s a small triumph for us as it’s the first time we’ve designed kitchen tables and chairs. What’s next for you? How do you see the brand developing? We are well on our way to becoming a one-stop shop meaning that customers can now ‘Loaf’ all of their home. Since launching in 2009 and originally being the specialist for beds we introduced sofa and bedroomy furniture last year and now we’re growing into pretty much all areas of the home.
On 1st March we launched over 150 gorgeous new pieces from kitchen tables and chairs, coffee tables, side tables and floor rugs, to bathroom furniture, a kids’ furniture range and art for the first time. And a load more comfy beds and sofas too! We are introducing lots of smaller accessories this year along with pieces for the home office such as tressle tables and storage, new tableware ranges, more modular sofas and footstools too. The long term dream is to build a ‘Loaf shack’. My aim is to have a giant out of town retail destination which will be totally bespoke, carbon neutral and made from sustainable materials. What advice do you have for other young brands looking to grow? Reduce, reduce, reduce! Essentially to keep a concept simple and then work out how to achieve your goal. With all this growth in your business, how do you relax? I play tennis two to three times a week with a coach. The other main luxury is holidays with my wife and two young children. I work hard to be able to enjoy this side of life. I am guilty of still checking in on my iphone though! Loaf stockist details: www.loaf.com / 0845 459 9937

INTERVIEW
Hot Brands Cool Places spoke with Caroline Hely Hutchinson, Founder of CHH Design Limited for an exclusive interview. What encouraged you to start CHH Design? My friends and family are to blame! My mother gave me a blank cow butter dish which prompted a frenzy of designs culminating in a hundred different cows! In order to make use of them, I would use them as individual cheese plates. Their different personalities seemed to capture people’s imagination! The dining table always looked inviting with vivacious plates, each in a different dynamic design and the vibrant little cups for after dinner coffee were also much admired. I was constantly encouraged to consider marketing them for some sophisticated fun on the High Street! Maybe they were just being polite, but eventually I thought, ‘why not?’ I have put all my creative and organizational energies into the project! The first pieces were launched two and a half years ago, and now I offer my customers a range of hundreds of different original, hand painted pieces. Your designs are very exciting and vibrant; where do find your inspiration? My inspiration is the communication through colour which surrounds us everywhere. When abroad, one is excited by the exotic local art, conveying the esprit and joie de vivre of the country. These artistic statements transcend language barriers. There is not enough colour in England at the moment; whether it is the grey skies, but some people seem to feel that you can only have colour on the Mediterranean. I do not agree. I want to take a pretty shaped, fine china object and make it an exuberant, elegant piece, which brings pleasure to the user. I think of the different types of art which people find exhilarating and try and create a similar esprit in my designs.. What advice would you give to someone wanting to bring their creative skills to a wider market than friends and family? As the saying goes, ‘time spent in reconnaissance is rarely time wasted’. It is best to know from the outset what you are trying to achieve and not to rush into the exercise. If it is a wide audience that you wish to reach, decide if there is a gap in the market, if your idea is unique, or if similar to others, and if the latter, what sets you apart. Understand where you are pitching your creation in terms of price, and whether it is economically viable. If your primary purpose is to give vent to your creativity, rather than make a profit, then there are many fairs and shows where you can take a stand and exhibit and sell your wares. This also achieves first hand feedback from the customer and can act as a useful ‘toe in the water’ for grander projects. Do you have personal favourites in your collection of designs? My cows, butter dishes and creamers, have different personalities and ‘attitude’ and this has definitely communicated itself to customers. I also love my ‘presentation bowls’ as the underlying form of the translucent bone china is a very attractive base for any design. If I had to buy one item only, it would be the gift boxed cappuccino cups, as they provide a vibrant start to every day.
What new developments do you have planned for your range? All the time there are new designs of olive oil bottle, apple dish, jug, scented candle being painted. It is not an efficient strategy, as the choice is too wide to manage, but it is a very enjoyable one! The Diversity oil bottle has been so popular that we will have a similar design of shot cups and mugs for the Autumn. They will be stunning. There will also be a few new objects, such as a heart shaped bowl and a salt and pepper pair, which I hope will make thoughtful wedding presents. I am hoping to launch a range of salt pigs for Christmas. Contrary to what the name suggests, they are not in the form of an animal, but a simple egg like shape, to be hand painted in a wide selection of designs. I wanted to create something which was useful as well as decorative, which would be fun to use in the kitchen and yet affordable; beautifully gift boxed, I hope it will solve a lot of Christmas present dilemmas. What makes a perfect weekend for you? Seeing my lovely son who is 16 and at boarding school, spending time with family and friends, and some tennis or golf in the sunshine. http://www.chh-design.com/en/
