HOW TO CREATE A COSY HOME PA RT ONE As we move into autumn our homes become more of a sanctuary and if they have had to become more multifunctional it's even more important to think about your use of space and time. As the days get shorter and we hover over the heating button, it’s time to create a warm and comforting nest. This year we have had the strangest of seasons, very hot in spring and September, and then in came October with a cold blast that made us feel that winter had arrived early. Currently there is talk of a ‘second wave’ but with very different scenarios and restrictions in different parts of the country; perhaps the one stable point in our lives is our homes and over the next six months it will be important to continue to nurture ourselves and our families. Staying healthy and eating well One way to do this is to try and stay healthy and to eat well, using fresh ingredients wherever possible. One book that we have loved this year and recently published is Mary Berry’s Simple Comforts by Mary Berry. If ever there was a time that we needed Mary Berry it’s now; as the temperature starts dropping, the days are getting shorter, and we are faced with the current uncertainty in our lives. So to bring us all comfort, Mary has created this delicious book full of the most gorgeous and mouthwatering recipes. As Mary describes in her introduction: "The very words, ‘comfort food’ are like a big warm hug for most of us. Comfort food means different things to different people. For many, it will be a roast Sunday dinner that says family and togetherness. For others it may be a perfect tomato salad that gives you the feeling of being in a sunlit Mediterranean cafe, or a home-made cake that fills the house with tempting aromas as it bakes in the oven" This book is everything we have grown to love and expect from Mary, stunning photography of each dish, clear and concise details in the recipes and reassuringly helpful hints from Mary.

So whatever your mood, or occasion, you can easily find the perfect recipe.

We particularly love Mary’s Recipe Finder, which takes every recipe and organises them into different categories e.g Soups, Simple Starters, Light Lunches & Sharing Plates, Salads, Make-Ahead Meals, Speedy Suppers, One-Pot Dishes, Pasta, Pastry, Weekend Specials, Feeding a Crowd, Accompaniments, Cold Puddings, Hot Puddings, Small Cakes & Biscuits, Large Cakes, Bread.

Featuring all the recipes from Mary’s BBC Two series, plus many more fresh from Mary’s kitchen, this book is an absolute joy. We absolutely adore it and that is why we are delighted to choose Mary Berry Simple Comforts by Mary Berry, published by Ebury Publishing as our as our Cookery Book of the Month. Highly Recommended! www.waterstones.com/

Feature

Minimising chores and uplifting your home In our increasingly busy lives it is so easy to become overwhelmed particularly as we adjust to changes both in work and at home. In our May issue we ran a feature about Working from Home – How to Create More Space and also how to clear clutter.

Despite this, it really is worth having a level of organization, as our homes take on increasingly more roles, home office, school-rooms, hobby central etc. There are many ways to tackle the need to be organized, increased storage can be a life-saver, looking creatively at your existing space can be another. Moving furniture around can also be quite liberating!

With more activities being carried out in potentially the same space inside our homes, there is an essential need to become more organized, most of us have experienced the statement, either from ourselves, our partners, or our children, "You’ve tidied, now I can’t find anything, it might have been a mess, but I knew where everything was!"

In the current situation, there is also a need for increased cleanliness, as well as hand-washing, surfaces need to be regularly cleaned and anything that is brought in from outside needs to be treated with care. Again try and equip yourself with as many labour-saving devices as possible, store cleaning products in a caddy, cordless vacuum cleaners can speed the process, but above all have a regular routine of household cleaning.

Also remember to regularly clean all the mobile devices, phones, keyboards, iPads, television remotes, particularly those used outside the home.

Getting enough fresh air and exercise One thing that many of us discovered during lockdown was the need to take daily exercise, being told that we were only allowed out for a certain period of time meant that many of us actually did go outside and discovered that we actually liked the daily routine. Another activity that brought enjoyment was gardening.

Feature Even if you don’t have a garden, there is still an opportunity to be creative with balconies or even window-sills. There is something quite special about seeing early bulbs arriving by Christmas, or early January and our second recommended book is full of inspiration.

If you are fortunate enough to have a garden, the autumn is the perfect time to clear out the remainder of summer plants and to prepare for next year’s spring planting. There is something quite lovely about planning for next year’s garden, curling up indoors and selecting seeds and plants, and if you are looking to redesign your garden, now is a good time to think about this. We have two favourite books to help with this planning, both of which have been our Gardening Books of the Month.

Modern Container Gardening – Isabelle Palmer In Modern Container Gardening, Isabelle Palmer aims to create an all-round, easy-to-understand guide to container gardening whether you are a complete novice, or have some gardening experience and it certainly fulfils that brief.

RHS How to Create your Garden – Ideas & Advice for Transforming Your Outdoor Space – Adam Frost Adam’s passion and enthusiasm for gardening shines throughout the book. Full of stunning illustrations and helpful advice he takes you through the key stages of creating a beautiful garden. He starts with Design, including Understanding Your Space, Design for People, Find Your Style, Choose Your Plants, Bring it all Together. He then focuses on How to Build Your Garden and How to Plant Your Garden. There are also really helpful ‘Ask Adam’ Q&A throughout the book. We love the final section of the book which is about how to Enjoy your Garden, which is a month by month summary of how to get the best out of your garden, with a quick checklist of tasks, what to do in your borders and vegetable garden, lawn, trees shrubs and climbers and any other jobs around the garden. As Adam says, “Great Gardens are all about emotions and how they make you feel”. Whether you are creating a garden for the first time, or want to revitalise your existing garden this is a most inspiring book, we absolutely loved it. How to Create Your Garden by Adam Frost is published by DK and available now dk.com

"It all started with one pot on a balcony; soon there were ten and then 30! From a simple desire to make the most of my small outdoor space. I’d soon created a container garden where I could sit and enjoy plants in the city" Packed full of the most useful information, the content includes, Getting Started, The Basics, Preparation and Planting, Caring for Container Plants, The Projects and Stockists. Also included is a Calendar of Care, with details of seasonal tasks, as Isabelle describes ’seasonal tasks in the container garden are a lovely way to mark the various stages in the horticultural year’ There is also a really helpful glossary of gardening terms. The beautiful projects are so inspiring, each project is an absolute joy with stunning photographs. This is an utterly delightful book, from start to finish it is full of the most gorgeous inspiration. Modern Container Gardening – Isabelle Palmer – How to Create a Stylish Small-Space Garden Anywhere. Published by Hardie Grant Books (UK) https://www.waterstones.com/ In Part Two we look at ways of enjoying relaxing together

In the run up to Autumn and winter it's a perfect time to make your home warm and functional, here are a few of our favourites...

Linda Barker Paints Much of Linda Barker Paints collection is inspired by the vast Yorkshire wraparound landscapes that surround Linda’s home, as well as the topography of her other favourite UK walking sites. They are hand crafted paints using traditional recipes and the finest natural ingredients. Better for the planet, your home and your health, the water-based formulations provide exceptional coverage while also being super-breathable, virtually odourless and with minimal VOC content. The innovative Colour Compass displays the colours in a way that is designed to take the worry out of choosing and combining colours for your living spaces. Knit Yourself Calm - Lynne Rowe & Betsan Corkhill

Cute Amigurumi Animals - Eleonore & Maurice

A creative path to managing stress

16 adorable creatures to crochet

Create beautiful projects designed to calm and soothe.

Enter into the whimsical, crocheted world of Eleonore & Maurice, a talented designer who blends pastel yarns with delicate floral fabric to make truly adorable amigurumi creations: plush animals with little accessories, as well as sweet cushions.

The Introduction is written by Betsan Corkhill, an experienced healthcare professional who founded the community interest company stitchlinks.com in 2005. It has grown into a global online community for those who enjoy the therapeutic benefits of craft, and in particular, knitting. Betsan has also advised on the projects included in the book and repetitive techniques to promote a calm state. Knitting is a relaxing and therapeutic pastime, and this winning combination focuses on mindfulness and the perfect stress-busting knitting projects. Whether you choose a portable project to knit on the go, a group project to do with friends, or one that introduces new skills to stimulate a creative mind, this book is the perfect path to keeping calm. The book is aimed at beginners as well as more advanced knitters, but does not include anything more complex than basic knit and purl stitches, increasing, decreasing and some simple colourwork. Lynne Rowe covers the essential techniques at the start of the book, followed by projects that have been specifically designed for mindfulness. The projects themselves are split into five sections: Quick and Easy, Portable, Group, Big, and New Skills. Within these sections, you can choose to make things such as a wash cloth, a hat, a blanket, a shawl and an evening bag, amongst others. Every single one has been designed to promote calm and mindfulness and all the projects are beautifully photographed with clear and simple knitting patterns. Whatever your skill level, there are plenty of projects in this book to help you achieve calm, bust those stress levels and enjoy a pastime which is creative, fun and produces beautiful projects to wear, or for the home. www.searchpress.com

The combination of the calming pastel cotton yarn and the delicate floral designs give beautiful results. These cute creations include a cat cushion, a bird family, a hedgehog, a rabbit and a reindeer. The crochet patterns are clear and easy to follow and the sewing element is minimal, including items such as fabric bows, belts, ears, tails and collars. Make them for yourself or as gifts for family and friends. Everyone is sure to love these beautiful crocheted creatures. The soft colours and splashes of floral fabric make them perfect companions that children will love. www.searchpress.com

If there has been one book that we have kept close to us this year it has been: The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and the Horse – Charlie Mackesy

Stitched Textiles: Flowers - Bobby Britnell This book will appeal to any textile artist interested in exploring flowers and their design possibilities. Fresh and innovative in its approach, it covers the design process itself, from inspiration to final design, and provides information on the materials used and step-by-step demonstrations of a whole range of techniques including dyeing, monoprinting, block printing, appliqué, foiling, photo-transfer printing, piecing and stitching. Five step-by-step projects build on the skills learnt in the preceding sections and include wall hangings, a pretty needlecase, a pincushion and a cushion cover. Very much aimed at the contemporary textile artist, this beautiful book is designed to inspire and encourage new ideas and experimentation. www.searchpress.com CURLING UP WITH A GOOD BOOK With so much concerning press and media talking over our lives, there is something quite special about curling up under a cosy blanket, reading a book and escaping. If you visit our Fiction reviews in our Hot Brands Cool Places website you will see a collection of reviews of uplifting and escapist fiction from our favourite authors. www.hotbrandscoolplaces.com

A book of hope for uncertain times. From the author:

FAMILY ACTIVITIES This year more than ever before every family has had to find new ways of spending time together, not just for home schooling, but also because of the restrictions on our social lives. Each family member however old or young will be reacting in different ways to these new circumstances. There are many ways of sharing enjoyable time together as well as respecting each other’s need for space.

If you haven’t discovered this exquisite book yet, it is something really special and perfectly sums up how to keep your family and friends close and loved. It has been our Book of the Month, Gift Book of the Year, and we would also nominate it for the Book of the Decade!

Playing games, having special meals together, learning new skills, volunteering to help local charities and then exploring outside when circumstances allow are all ways of relieving the stresses in everyone’s lives.
