Interview

We last interviewed you in 2016, what have been the highlights since then? The last three years has been the busiest time we have ever had, our dresses are now available through over 60 stockists worldwide. We’ve taken on Australia, Hong Kong, Germany, and Canada as new areas and increased our sales across the board. We’ve dressed Jennifer Hudson, Little Mix, a number of stars at the Oscars, and I was lucky enough to be live on ITV during the last Royal wedding to comment on Eugenie’s gorgeous wedding gown. However the biggest moment for me has got to be being featured on Vogue Runway, it really was a dream come true for me. We love your latest designs, what was the inspiration behind the 2020 Flores Collection? I’ve said this many times before but it really is the Brides themselves, I am incredibly lucky to meet so many wonderful women throughout the year and they become my motivation to design the next collection. The Flores collection is an amalgamation of carefully curated designs selected from over 100 sketches. When I start designing a new collection, I can’t seem to stop! Can you tell us a little bit about the process of helping a bride chose a design for their dress? Every Bride has her own individual style and its very important to bring this out. Not only does a wedding gown have to suit the Bride but it needs to represent her personality. Our Team is experienced in finding the style that is right for each client. A Bride should keep an open mind when trying on gowns, as they may well be pleasantly surprised by what suits them. It's important to take advice from those in the know/Industry and friends who have already got married. What advice do you offer about the perfect accessories to accompany their dress? Less is more! I think minimal accessories are always best. When planning the overall look it is easy to get carried away with all the options, and it can look over the top. It is important to remember you have the flowers and veil as accessories already. What are your plans for the future? I have so many exciting plans for the future of the company, including a new evening wear collection, more photoshoots and more collaborations. We plan to expand the business in all areas and grow our production team to keep up with the increasing demand for dresses. We have been delighted with the demand from America, its taken us many years to become known in the USA as it's such a huge market and there is a great deal of competition, but I finally feel like we’ve made it there now. As a guest what makes a perfect wedding for you? I love attending weddings, I think a great wedding is all about the people. I don’t think you need to the most lavish venue or exotic location, as long as you have those that you love around you. www.suzanneneville.com

Interview

ERIN AND JEAN-BAPTISTE - OWNERS OF CHÂTEAU DE BOURNEAU DESTINATION WEDDING VENUE The Château de Bourneau looks exquisite, can you tell us a little about its history?

We are also situated in the second sunniest region in France and so we love hosting al fresco wedding breakfasts under the stars. We have onsite accommodation for 44 people with 4 swimming pools, including the sumptuous honeymoon suite inside the château for our wedding couple.

There has been a chateau on this site since 1466 but the current Château de Bourneau you see today was actually built between 1863-66 on the foundations of the medieval fortress in the style of the French Premier Renaissance. It was inspired by the royal château of the Loire Valley, in particular Azay-le-Rideau. It is surrounded by a moat fed by a natural spring and it is rumoured that there are secret tunnels under it, although we haven’t found any yet!

We understand that language and cultural barriers can be stressful when organising a destination wedding but as both English and French speakers, we do our best to make sure everything runs smoothly

The château stayed in the same family until the 1950s when it became an institute that welcomed refugees who fought for France from Vietnam and Algeria to repatriate them into French society. It was then bought back into the original family in 1997 and they created 4 large holiday cottages, each with their own swimming pool, from the old stables. We took over the château in 2018 and are embarking on restoring it back to its former glory. We host weddings, events and holidays to fund the restoration.

Hiring a wedding planner can significantly reduce your stress-load, especially when trying to plan a wedding from abroad. They can take the pressure off language and cultural barriers to make sure your dream day is utterly perfect and deal with the co-ordination of suppliers which takes a lot of the stress away so you can focus on having a fabulous time.

What can you offer bridal couples looking for a destination wedding? The Château de Bourneau is a fairytale castle with dreaming turrets peeping over its own moat and is perfect for anyone who is a hapless romantic and dreams of being the Lords and Ladies of the manor or loves French history. Set in 16 hectares of park and woodland with the rose garden and ruined orangery, our wedding couples are free to create their own bespoke wedding weekend using all the estate has to offer, reserved exclusively for them and their guests.

What advice do you have for bridal couples that they need to consider when planning a destination wedding?

If couples plan to stay with you for their honeymoon what is available for them to visit locally? We are situated in the unspoilt Vendéen countryside of Pays de la Loire so if you love sunshine and the great outdoors, this region has so much to offer. Grab a bottle of bubbly and explore French “green Venice” by taking a romantic rowing boat through the gorgeous tree-lined canals around the beautiful ruined Abbey of Maillezais. Just bliss! For the foodies, the pretty medieval city of La Rochelle is a stone's throw away. Explore the winding streets and café cultures or eat al fresco on the harbour within the medieval city walls.

It’s also not far to take the bridge across the sea to the pretty French island of Ile de Ré and eat seafood on the island marina. With all the colourful French shutters, long sandy beaches and wild jasmine, it feels like living in a Parisian perfume advert! What are your plans for the future of Château de Bourneau? The Château de Bourneau is our family home and a labour of love for us. It brings us so much pleasure seeing it come back to life and how much joy it brings our guests and local community. We love having weddings here and always feel absolutely privileged to have been chosen to host someone’s special day. We hope that we will be able to restore the entire property for more guests to enjoy and to open the grounds for more community events from concerts to foodie festivals and outdoor theatre. As a wedding guest what makes a perfect wedding for you? As a wedding guest, having everything happening in one place is my perfect wedding as it makes everything so much easier. No one has to drive between venues, worry about not drinking or how they are going to get back to the accommodation after the evening. It’s also always so fun having everyone staying together and the party can continue for longer! www.chateaudebourneau.com @chateaudebourneau @theintrepidchatelaine

DESIGNING YOUR HOME When couples get married furnishing their joint home can be interesting; with the cost of student loans, young people living with their parents for longer, the transient nature of working and the growth of people working from home, a snapshot of today’s modern home interiors can be very different from the traditional homes of the past.

pieces that are really comfortable and enduring than items that have a shorter life span. There are also so many talented artisans creating bespoke items made from wonderful natural materials, or people restoring and breathing new life into vintage or antique furniture that your home can be furnished with really unique items.

Renting a property is more commonplace and some couples may find themselves living in shared homes even after they have married, therefore choosing furniture and decorating homes is perhaps more varied than at any period in the past.

With a focus on comfort, some items like beds and sofas, have become over-sized, and as a result there is less space and often an emphasis on functionality with other items.

Against this backdrop, accessories can provide a way of personalizing your space, unique one-off statement pieces that become a focal point, soft furnishings that can soften the look and feel of a room, or provide a theme linking the room(s) together. Once you are in the position to furnish your home with something more permanent do think about the quality of what you are buying, look for products that are produced ethically and responsibly and with the minimal use of chemicals. It can be more cost-effective in the long term to choose special

Technology increasingly will have a role to play in today’s eclectic homes, and with less space items often need to be multi-functional. With living space often doubling up as working space, storage can become an issue, in modern homes there are less places to store items and so purchasing older antique and vintage items can provide both beauty and practicality. BRINGING GARDENING INTO YOUR LIFE Getting married is a wonderful step into the future, but after the ceremony and the honeymoon, the reality of day to day living often sets in and as a couple it is important to look after each other’s wellbeing. Creating a home together is very important; somewhere that becomes your sanctuary where you can relax, and forget about day-to-day stresses. One way of doing this is to look at the outside space that you have available to you, for many this may be limited to a balcony or a small courtyard garden, but even in tiny spaces it is possible to nurture and grow herbs, plants, vegetables and flowers. Gardening is now well documented as being a very beneficial way of focusing on your well-being. Just as couples sign up for places in their preferred school for their babies, you may wish to put your name down for an allotment. Depending on where you live allotment space can be at a premium, with long waiting lists, but once you reach the top it can be exhilarating to create your own piece of gardening heaven. Having fresh flowers in your home can be a wonderful way of welcoming you home each day, you can also keep the memory of your wedding day alive by growing some of the flowers from your bouquet. If you are fortunate enough to have a garden, try and keep part of it for a cutting garden, planting and nurturing your own flowers from seed it one of the most rewarding parts of gardening.

U N I Q U E T O U C H E S F O R YO U R S P E C I A L DAY When it comes to weddings it’s the little touches that make all the difference. Planning a wedding can be an exciting and wonderful experience, but can sometimes appear a little daunting too. In our previous wedding issues (see our archived wedding magazines) we have talked about planning for the overall event, but in this issue we are going to focus on some of the more intimate and personal items for on the day. In any planning of the actual wedding day it is important to focus on the overall main organisation with beautiful invitations, clear directions, booking photographers, venues etc. Once these have been taken care of, you will have a period of time when you can really focus on the actual day itself. And it is in the planning of the day that you can really choose some exquisite items to make your day very special and memorable. One such area are the flowers, depending on the time of year try to select flowers that are seasonal and readily available. Increasingly wedding couples are opting for more natural arrangements, incorporating wild flowers into the church, reception and their floral bouquets. One source of beautiful inspiration is The Floral Fix by Anna Potter of Swallows and Damsons. Spanning all seasons and including both larger installations and smaller, simpler projects, there is something for anyone looking to play, experiment and create atmosphere with flowers.

www.amazon.co.uk/ They also offer help with your wedding arrangements visit: http://www.swallowsanddamsons.com http://www.swallowsanddamsons.com/weddings

Another specialist in seasonal wedding flowers is Swan Cottage Flowers who provide Wedding Flowers cut straight from their Buckinghamshire Flower Garden. They provide a bespoke design service and grow the flowers for you with beautiful floral arrangements and bouquets to transform your wedding day, or you can select a DIY selection based on the size of your venue, or event. https://swancottageflowers.co.uk When planning the place settings on the table think about what could make it really special when the guests sit down, what impression do you want to make? Often less is more, remember to allow space for the place settings, cutlery and glasses. If you have created a theme for the overall wedding how could this theme be repeated from the invitations to the seating chart, tabel names, place settings and menus on the table? Exquisite designs can be used incorporating calligraphy, illustrations, flowers, and wax seals. Even the smallest place card can be a beautiful work of art to be treasured after the event. Following the wedding there are other ways that you can make the event memorable by writing up some of the speeches from the event, or the wedding vows if they haven’t already been made into a Wedding Vow book. This is something that couples give to each other as a first wedding anniversary gift. Images supplied courtesy of Fine Art Calligraphy

THE PIER The Pier stands proudly overlooking the picturesque harbour and the confluence of the Stour and Orwell rivers. Long established in Harwich, the hotel boasts four stars with two rosettes for cooking. The Harbourside on the first floor of The Pier, is renowned for using locally caught seafood, much of which is landed in the harbour opposite. Our Head Chef takes much of his influence from the sea so Harwich lobster and crab are nearly always on the menu served whichever way you’d like. Stay over and capture the ambience of this delightful old town, a night in The Mayflower suite, complete with telescope is a must!
