Hot Brands Cool Places spoke with Deborah Meaden, about her latest venture - The Merchant Fox
INTERVIEW
What circumstances first made you successful? Growing up I was surrounded by a family with a strong entrepreneurial spirit and heard lots of entrepreneurial conversation; it was clear from a young age that to succeed in business, you have to do it for yourself, be your own motivator and go for it wholeheartedly. You have launched and successfully run a number of businesses, what are the indicators that you look for before you get started on your own ventures? You have to assess the relevance of a product or business. Is it current and will it still be current and desirable by the time it comes to market, which inevitably takes longer and costs more than you anticipate. Think about internet enabled fridges - these have been around for years, often cited as one of the technological innovations in the house of the future. It is only now that they’re attracting interest as a viable piece of consumer technology in the kitchen, years after the early models were first talked about, their time has finally come. What excites you about The Merchant Fox? The excitement started with Fox Brothers, the historic English woollen mill I acquired at the end of 2009 with business partner and textile expert Douglas Cordeaux. Established in 1772, nearly 250 years ago, Fox is credited with the the original inventor of flannel in 1803 and is still said to be the original and best. Think of Hollywood actor Cary Grant impeccably dressed on the silver screen and you’ll be looking at a suit made from Fox Brothers cloth. Sir Winston Churchill in his iconic chalk-stripe, another cloth from Fox Brothers chosen by his tailor, Henry Poole of Savile Row. Put another way, Fox ‘owns’ certain aspects of its market and we’ve used that platform to find other provenance products for The Merchant Fox. Fox Brothers is steeped in history, but not hindered by its heritage. Fox’s unrivalled reputation for quality, credibility and heritage enabled us to launch ‘The Merchant Fox’, allowed us to collaborate with other producers of fine luxury goods being made here in Britain. Discovering some truly exquisite things made in this country is heart warming when you hear people say that we no longer make anything in this country. We certainly make a lot less than we used to, but we’re still producing quality goods in Britain.
5
How would you like to see the brand developing? Fox is forging ahead in strong foreign markets such as the far east. On a recent trade visit to Korea, Douglas found an healthy appetite for genuine British goods and significant interest amongst business leaders and also media for all things ‘Made in Britain’. Since taking over the mill, more and more designers have identified the benefit of marketing Fox Brothers direct to the consumer, requesting our labels to sew into the piece as discerning consumers recognise and appreciate the value the Fox Brothers name. The Merchant Fox will continue to develop its collection, regularly launching new items that are made in Britain and wherever possible, incorporate iconic cloths from Fox. The collection will continue to be underpinned by Fox’s heritage and the fascinating milestones in its illustrious history. If you were giving a Masterclass to young people just leaving school who are attracted to running their own business, what key messages would you like to leave them with? Learn from what’s gone before, expose yourself to other businesses, work out how and why they have been successful and be honest with yourself. Honest about your commitment to the idea, the strength of your knowledge and finally, your commitment to succeed. Blind passion alone can be a dangerous thing, first assess the viability of the idea, then get passionate. What do you enjoy most about being Deborah Meaden? Not that I’ve known anything else of course, but since being on ‘Dragons’ Den’, without doubt the most enjoyable aspect of my day-to-day life has been the wide range of business opportunities and truly amazing people I’ve been fortunate enough to meet. What can we do to encourage the development of skilled craftsmanship in young people? The national curriculum needs to allow our young people to try things out for themselves, they need to be given the opportunity to craft and make things using their hands. If this was genuinely valued from an early age, perhaps less academically minded young people would have a more fulfilling and productive time during their education. www.themerchantfox.co.uk

Hot Brands Cool Places talked with Nina Müller, General Manager of lola&grace for an exclusive interview
INTERVIEW Why did Swarovski decide to launch a new brand? Market research shows, that women 18 to 25 see Swarovski as an aspirational brand for when they have more buying power at a later stage in their lives. To address these young trendy women, who want accessible products, choice, variety and the latest fashion trends, we launched a stand-alone and complementary brand: lola&grace was born as the playful little sister to Swarovski. lola&grace is about being with friends, having fun, being original, eclectic, accessible and expressive. Online & offline, we bring brilliant, on-trend fashion jewellery & accessories to express yourself. What has been the inspiration for the designs? We’ve developed 3 lines that will be carried out throughout the year, each with its own individual style for all of our lolas or graces out there: 1. Essentials - a colourful range of Swarovski crystal inspired pieces with a modern twist, these are our basic must-have pieces. 2. Glamour - an urban glamour inspired collection focusing on glam rock, with dark and metallic colours, multilayered chains and Swarovski crystals. 3. Bohemian - a feminine, romantic collection that combines Swarovski pearls, soft and playful details, and vintage inspired motifs. What’s different about the new store at Westfield? Walk by our lola&grace store and you will notice a few special and unique things before even going inside. See the bright and colourful window that catches your eye with giant bold cut-outs of rings, giant pearl necklaces, a big ampersand (in our favourite berry colour of course), striking printed words and lots of sparkling pieces displayed in industrial looking metal cases. This will regularly change as we are dedicated to mixing things up and keeping our window, like everything else we do, looking fresh and exciting. Come inside and listen to the latest music, break out some classic moves and check out the huge sparkling crystal ball with our ampersand emblem on it. You’ve just entered our club with the latest sparkling, shiny fashion jewellery, in a multitude of colours.
Try on lots of different jewellery before picking just the right piece to add that little something extra to your outfit. At our store you can try, touch and feel all the fashion jewellery because we know that it’s nice to try before you buy (not earrings but we encourage shoppers to try all other product). The digital hot spot Live it up - and be entertained by our digital hot spot in-store. This interactive screen acts as a bridge between our digital and non-digital world and is where we want shoppers to become part of the lola&grace family. Discover! Play! Vote! Check out the latest fashion news, events and special offers or enjoy one of the many competitions and games available, such as the limited edition crystal lottery where you have a chance of winning lola&grace fashion jewellery for yourself and a friend. What most excites you about your role? Having the chance to build a brand from scratch, being involved with every aspect from retail, pr and advertising to social media, events and design. I love having all internal and external personnel being able to input and shape the brand including retail staff – we value all opinions and there’s nothing better than having the people you have contact with on a daily basis coming up with fun, creative and innovative ideas. Do you have a favourite piece in the collection? Hot Brands Cool Places spoke with Duncan Glendinning, co-author of Bread Revolution for an exlusive interview.
INTERVIEW
How did you meet Patrick and how did you end up working together? Paddy and I met on a virtually desert island out in Fiji, over a bottle of Jamesons and a box of cigars! I was working as sustainability manager on a cool eco-tourism project called Tribewanted. com and Paddy was a visitor to the island. Having seen him bake the most amazing sage and onion bread in our concrete oil drum oven from ingredients grown on the island, I decided to get in touch with him on my return from Fiji when I’d decided to set up The Thoughtful Bread Company. After a little convincing (which included local brewery tour as Paddy had not been to Bath before) I convinced him to join me as my first member of staff at The Thoughtful Bread Company where he took up the role as Head Baker. What excites you most about your Bread Revolution? We want to encourage people to think more about the bread they eat and to show that baking at home can be easy and cost effective. You don’t need to be an expert baker to serve up fantastic loaves! In the book Bread Revolution we demystify the bread making process and show you how to make everyday breads, delicious flavoured loaves and sweet treats. We also want to encourage ‘crust to crust eating’. If we’re honest, making your own bread is going to take more time than picking one up from the supermarket but if you’re able to use every part of the bread you make then its well worth the time. In the book we show you not only how to make different types of bread but also how to then use that bread in different recipes such as salads and other meals. We want to put bread back at the centre of a meal where it belongs! Do you each have a favourite recipe? My favourite has to be the Nettle & Chive bread because none illustrate better what we at The Thoughtful Bread are all about. Foraging for wild ingredients, growing our own chives and combining in a loaf of bread that is exciting, very very good for you (nettles are higher in iron than spinach even, so are the genuine Popeye food!) and also great fun. What ambitions do you have for the future? There are exciting plans afoot at Thoughtful Bread! As well as work which will be picking up pace outside the bakery with the construction of our huge communal clay oven, raised beds and more, there’s some exciting things to come from inside the bakery too, so watch this space! How do you spread your time between your various projects? Now that’s a tricky question. When you run your own business things can get a little frantic for the slightly less organised people amongst us. I also am continually having to react and respond to a number of things that happen around the business (such as what the competition is doing, how trends change etc..right the way through to the varying work load on at the bakery) so there is never a dull moment. Like most however, I just wish there were a few more hours in the day to get to the end of that to-do list, even just the once!
We often ask a question about time traveling, if you could time travel and go anywhere in the world, describe a perfect day for you. If I could time travel, I’d have to want to go back to a rural village tucked away in the French countryside. Back when the communal ovens are continuously fired by the villagers and they could often be found there waiting for their loaves to bake, exchanging gossip much like I picture people doing today in launderettes. Things seemed so much simpler back then. Work the soil and work alongside mother nature to feed your family and ensure your livelihood. www.thethoughtfulbreadcompany.com Bread Revolution-Duncan Glendinning and Patrick Ryan Synopsis: People love a fresh loaf. The way it smells, the crunch of the crust, the warm, soft texture of bread newly out of the oven. The growth of artisan bakeries and the increasing choice in supermarkets is testament to the fact that we want an alternative to the prepackaged conformity of mass-produced baking. So why not make it ourselves? Bread is cheap to make, and a lot simpler than you might think. The Bread Revolution is a call to arms, encouraging all of us to think again about baking our own loaves. It demystifies the whole process, offering an easy repertoire of delicious savoury breads and sweet dough treats, plus down-to-earth tips. Its 60 inspiring recipes range from soda bread to potato and rosemary, healthy multi-seed wholemeal to an amazing sourdough that can fit in your busy schedule. Central to the book is the idea that bread can be a meal in itself, with ideas for quick lunches, children’s teas and evening meals. Plus cinnamon Danish pastries and hot cross buns, and a host of thrifty recipes for your bread leftovers, from summer gazpacho to winter-warming bread and butter pudding. Hot Brands Cool Places Verdict There is no mistaking the passion behind this book, the descriptions of the processes and the bread itself makes you want to get up and make your own. The recipes are delicious and wholesome and contain many more ideas than just the bread itself. With information about the different types of dough, savoury breads, sourdough and sweet treats you will be spoilt for choice. With step-by-step instructions, delightful photography and delicious recipes, this is a book to treasure! We loved it. Highly Recommended! www.amazon.co.uk
