It is also never too early to start planning your 2019 holiday. This issue is packed full of delightful places to stay both at home or further afield. If you are planning a wedding, or a special event we also have an interview with Emma Deeley, Co-Owner of The Tythe Barn, Launton, Oxfordshire. As we move into the autumn, our thoughts turn to more creative activities, and we encourage a more relaxed approach to crafting with our Take it Easy feature including some of our favourite creative books. We also have a round up of other books on our bookshelf this month as well as our regular Beauty Round-up. Enjoy... Emma Deeley Co-Owner of The Tythe Barn, Launton image courtesy of MT Studio Photography The Tythe Barn has a wonderful heritage, can you tell us a little about its history? The Tythe Barn has been part of our family farm, here in Launton, for over 500 years. Historically the role of The Tythe Barn would have been to store all the produce provided by the local community and then a percentage of this would have been passed on to the landlord as a form of renthence the name Tythe. The Barn was then used as a home for lambing ewes in the spring, harvesting grain in the summer and as a home to cattle in the winter but as time moved on and farming became more mechanised the Tythe barn started to become a little redundant. How has it changed over the years to develop into a wedding venue? Desperate to hold on to this fantastic building the Deeley family looked at ways in which they could breathe new life into the barn and perhaps give it a new purpose.

The first plan was to re-thatch the roof and then Will - having gained a Sports Science degree at University and gone on to work as a Personal Trainer - had the idea for the barn to function as a gym / studio. During this 'mulling over' period this huge characterful space became host to a number of big family parties and then Will's elder brother asked whether it would be possible to use the barn for his wedding...we have never looked back! Sympathetically renovated, the barn has evolved very slowly over time but both William and myself are incredibly passionate about each and every detail. We still find it wonderful that a barn built back in the early 14th Century is still a bustling venue right at the heart of the local community. What advice do you have for couples looking for a special wedding venue? Do your research and narrow down the venues that suit your ideas and requirements. Try to be flexible and consider the dates either side of your ideal date as this will give you a better opportunity for
17
securing a date at your favourite venue!! If you’re not planning on getting married in a church then ask whether your venue is licensed for a Civil Ceremony. Check up on the options for either an indoor or outdoor ceremony too and whether there is a backup plan if it rains. Very important - if you are planning a big wedding do make sure you do your research regarding numbers. No good falling in love with a venue to find out later that they cannot accommodate the number of guests you would like to invite. If you have a certain theme or look in mind make sure your chosen venue can accommodate this... Most venues will have set formats and set table layouts that work well in the venue and are efficient in terms of the space provided. At The Tythe Barn we take a very flexible approach and work with all our couples very carefully in order to create the whole feel and look of the day they have in mind. Nothing is set in stone, we offer a number of different set ups, layout options, lighting and menu choices which together help to create a very bespoke day.
When you are not creating wonderful events for other people what do you do to relax? Will and I have 3 children - Stan 14, Isaac 13 and Florence 7 so whenever we get time to just be with them we absolutely cherish it. (I don't mind the odd sit down with a book or magazine too and of course a drop of wine!)

As a guest what makes a wedding memorable for you? It is always about seeing the couple 'happy'. As a guest at a wedding you feed off the love from the day and if the couple are relaxed and having a great time surrounded by all of their close family and friends - it's wonderful! What other special events can you offer? We do many other events at The Tythe Barn from birthday parties and christenings to fashion shows, car launches and filming. We've hosted some fantastic companies over the years from Volvo and Hunter Wellies to Mint Velvet and Toro Rosso all requiring the barn and it's grounds to adapt to fit the brief. One of my personal favourites would be when Mint Velvet chose us for their Autumn / Winter launch - the barn took on a mini vintage festival vibe both inside and out with hay bales draped in cashmere throws, Tipis, picnic stations and live music. Of course the fact that Raymond Blanc and his team of chefs and staff chose us to host their Christmas party and serve them their festive dinner is something we will always be rather smug about...and they returned the following year!!!

Take it Easy... The autumn months are the perfect time to enjoy creative crafts. In our busy lives it is so easy just to slump in front of the television at the end of the day, or spend time on social media, but the physical act of creating can help you to relax, or lose yourself in a very positive way. There are so many opportunities to be creative, to join groups, or workshops locally, as well as teaching yourself either with books, or through online tutorials. So much of our time is driven by other people’s demands, or achievement of goals set by ourselves, being creative can provide the complete opposite. It can give us the opportunity to experiment with no defined outcome. For relatively little cost it’s possible to try out different projects, and find out what we enjoy doing. Creativity can be enjoyed in so many ways, we’ve all seen the growth in adult colouring books, but the next trends promises to be much more diverse, from experimenting in the kitchen, calligraphy, weaving, paper-folding, macramé, sewing, embroidery and so much more! It is also something to enjoy as a family; while adults may be embracing their creative flair, sadly many of our schools have suffered with restrictions in their ability to provide a richly creative curriculum for our children. Ironically children who may be demonstrating skilled dexterity on their mobile phones cannot sew, or knit. Many of us have fond memories ISSUE˚62
32
of sitting with our grandparents and learning these basic skills and we need to ensure that future generations also have confidence and joy in expressing their creativity. If they see us experimenting with our craft, their natural curiosity may encourage them to join in. Being creative, is a curious, joyous, wonderful, and sometimes messy experience, but our lives would be such a dull place without it! Importantly it’s not about achieving perfection, it may not even be about finishing, many of us have on-going projects, just as we have a capacity to multi-task, we may also enjoy multi-crafting. If you are working on an ambitious craft project, you may also have smaller projects that can be picked up and worked on when you have short amounts of time, or even take with you when you are commuting. If you are planning an autumn escape, the weather can often be mild enough during the day to paint or sketch outside, or to take photographs that you can work from on your return. Also one of the joys of having the extra time when you are on holiday is to pack some crafting material with you. You may even be able to attend some local workshops if you plan ahead. There is something wonderful about losing yourself in creating something, and this month we have an absolutely gorgeous selection of books to inspire you. HOT BRANDS COOL PLACES AUTUMN ESCAPES ISSUE

This is an absolutely delightful book, what we love is that the authors cover both hand lettering and watercolouring. The illustrations are absolutely stunning. There is a really comprehensive introductory section titled “Good to Know’ full of helpful tips and information about the tools and techniques. This is followed by a practical collection of projects using both techniques. The final section called “Creative Treasure Trove’ contains a wide range of designs and letter styles, plus exercise sheets. We loved this, a wonderful way to get started.

As advocates of always having a notebook with us, we love this book! It’s a very imaginative take on ways of using sketchbooks, notebooks, workbooks, journals, as part of the journey towards a finished creation and as Shelley explains, they may become the artwork themselves. This stunning book is packed through with beautiful examples of so many ways to use sketchbooks, from how to get started, working in mixed media, travelling with a sketchbook, exhibiting, other forms of collecting, and even using digital technology. This is one of our favourite sources of inspiration!

Covering each of the show’s four rounds – Connections, Sequences, the Connecting Wall and Missing Vowels – and with introductions from presenter Victoria Coren Mitchell, here is your chance to put your own sleuthing and quizzical knowledge to the Only Connect test. https://www.amazon.co.uk/ Hot Brands Cool Places Review If you love BBC’s Only Connect you will love this book, there is an introduction with fascinating information about how the show was created from Victoria Coren Mitchell, followed by a selection of the challenges arranged in the four rounds as the quiz. What we loved was the way the answers follow the question, so no need to keep turning to the back of the book! It’s a great book for Autumn evenings, either on your own or with friends and family.

Sundays in Paris An insider's guide to the best places to eat, drink and explore – and every other day of the week - Yasmin Zeinab London Sketchbook- Jason Brooks Synopsis: Sundays are famously a dead zone in Paris, with visitors confronted with one 'closed' sign after another. So frustrated was Parisian resident Yasmin Zeinab that she came to the rescue with Sundays in Paris to reveal the best places to eat, drink and explore on le dimanche. (The spots are also pretty good on the other days of the week too.)
Synopsis:This follow-up to Jason Brooks’s highly successful Paris Sketchbook is a stunning gift book that brings the big smoke to life through beautiful imagery. From the West End to the Square Mile and from Liberty to hipster hangouts, Brooks explores modern-day London through his unique visual repertoire that unites high fashion, fine art and traveller’s sketches made on the fly.
