FOURTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR!

We know modern life can be challenging, so we are also putting the spotlight on health and well-being. I’m sure you will attest to the huge benefits of being in the mountains; the fresh air, stunning scenery and peaceful surroundings. It all does wonders for the body and soul. On page 20 we bring you our top resorts for reconnecting with nature, including luxury escapes and eco-friendly lodgings. Another big draw when choosing a holiday is the food and wine of course. Our destinations across Europe certainly spoil us in that respect! On page 18 our team whet our appetite by revealing their favourites; from puff pastry delights in Slovenia to fondue goodness in Switzerland. We will be releasing the main edition brochure in the autumn of 2019, packed full of resort and accommodation ideas, so do register for a copy at inghams.co.uk/brochure. Or to search latest prices and availability, and book online 24/7 visit inghams.co.uk/summer We may be facing uncertain times, but you can always travel with confidence with Inghams. MAKING HISTORY

Walter Ingham grew up in Austria where he developed his passion for the mountains. In 1934 aged only 20, he returned to the UK to sell Remington typewriters. He quickly realised that he missed the mountains and found that if he could get a party of 15 together, he would get a free place on the train and at the hotel. One advertisement in The Times later and the rest is history!

Making History 6

02-09_Intro_Features.indd 6

18/04/2019 15:51

From that first group of 15, Inghams now carries over 100,000 guests every year to Austria, France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Slovenia and Norway. In 1964 he sold his company to the Swiss company, Hotelplan, who remain our parent company to this day. So much has changed over the years. Way back then, air travel was in its infancy and all travel was by rail, boat or motor coach. See more about how transport has changed on pages 8-9. En suite bathrooms were almost unheard of - one had to pay the proprietor extra to take a bath! The three stories below illustrate this to the full. Firstly, let’s hear from Ingham's guests, Stan and Sonya Ainsworth, Stan remembers... “In 1984 I visited our local travel agents as I was getting married and needed help choosing where to go on our honeymoon. The travel agent strongly recommended Inghams and Mayrhofen. I booked and we stayed at the Hotel Strass. This year, through Inghams, we return to celebrate our 34th wedding anniversary, staying at the same resort and the same hotel. The thing that really struck me was that Sonya had kept not only the tickets and paperwork in the Inghams yellow folder but even the brochure! So if that’s not a Gold Star recommendation I don’t know what is!”

Andreas Kröll is CEO of the Christophorus Group in Mayrhofen who have been looking after and welcoming Inghams guests to the Ziller Valley for several decades. “It has always been an honour for me to welcome your guests to Mayrhofen. At Christophorus we are all proud and happy to service Inghams for such a long time. We will always do our best to satisfy your guests. We wish you all good luck and success over the next 85 years!”

PERFECT PLANNING Inghams Resort Reps have always been at the heart of our business and are always on hand with a friendly smile and helpful advice to help our guests get the most out of their holiday. And it seems to have always been that way!

And Family Kratzer, from Hotel Helga, in Seefeld adds "We thank Inghams for the many years of successful partnership. And would like to take the opportunity of thanking Inghams for the many repeat guests that we have as a result of our working together. We wish Inghams continued success and look forward to the future together."

In July 1964, 55 years ago, Capt. W.E. Rivers wrote in to say: “As a soldier, I could not help admiring the perfect planning. Everything was done for our comfort and I am sure it would be impossible to enjoy a better holiday. A special word of thanks to your representative. The minute we reached Pisa we became her family until she finally saw us on to the plane for home. Her energy was indescribable and her care for her flock unbelievable”

Finally, let’s hear from Pat Hillman who’s been a key member of our Reservations and Operations Team for over 40 years. “I remember my first week as a very shy 18 year old at Inghams in Putney Bridge Road, London and it was very nearly my last.

We’ve always maintained that the key to a successful travel business is to build strong partnerships with local hoteliers, tourist boards and travel suppliers. Partnerships that will last for years rather than change every season and we still work with many hoteliers in the Alps whose parents signed their first contract with Walter Ingham himself!

In those days before computers a glass tube of marbles represented the number of seats available for each flight (15 marbles/15 seats). Guess who tripped over and knocked over half the tubes leaving broken glass and marbles everywhere? Somehow I survived that episode and now I’m proud to be the longest serving member of the Inghams family. I’m just thankful that our state of the art reservations system has replaced those marbles!”

In the early years of Walter Ingham’s tours, all travel to the Continent was by rail. In those pre-Eurostar days it was a 24 hour journey from London Victoria via Folkestone and Calais to Innsbruck with second class couchettes included. The bench seats converted into 3 tiers of bunks and there was always a scramble for the lower berths. Everyone had to retire at the same time even if you weren’t ready for bed and most people used to bring their own packed meals rather than purchase the infamous British Rail sandwiches which have their own place in history! A young Danny Nickson joined F&W Ingham in 1954 when the office was located in New Bond Street above a chemist. Danny was appointed as the Inghams Rep at Croydon Airport and he recalls: “My job was the booking and ticket issue of a charter flight operated by Transair Ltd. Transair operated a war-time DC3 which was basic - the internal fuselage was bare metal! The flight operated from Croydon Airfield to Innsbruck, then on to Salzburg and back to London. As Croydon Airfield had a short runway, the aircraft landed at Hurn Airfield (now Bournemouth Airport) to refuel. At that time when a travel company operated a charter, the passengers had to be members of a club or organisation. Major Ingham overcame this stipulation by making clients members of the Austrian Alpine Club for a fee.” In the 1960’s coach and overland travel was still more popular than flying thanks in no small way to the restrictive practices of scheduled airlines like British European Airways who wanted to keep fares artificially high. We heard recently from John and Susan Robinson who went on their honeymoon with Inghams to Niederau over 50 years ago. John writes: “We joined a coach at Victoria to take us to Dover, crossing to Ostend. There we joined a “Sleepcoach”. After travelling some hours we stopped for dinner when the drivers converted the seats into two tiers of bunks complete with pillows, blankets and a privacy curtain. We journeyed through the night arriving in Austria for breakfast where the drivers converted the bunks back to seats for the last leg of the journey to Niederau! “ It doesn't sound like the most romantic start to their honeymoon, but it can't have been too bad as John and Susan returned to Austria in 2018 - with Inghams of course to celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary.

Even until the millennium, self-drive holidays were still a popular option and Inghams had a dedicated brochure featuring them. With the increasing cost of fuel, road tolls, problems at Calais and the rise of the low-cost airlines, now only a very few Inghams guests travel this way. Rail charters still operated into the mid1970’s with departures every Friday from London Victoria to Innsbruck and Milan with up to 700 passengers on each service. But when the restrictions on air charters were lifted, travel by air became the preferred option for its speed, choice of regional departures and shorter transfers. Nowadays, Inghams fly from no less than 23 UK airports to 17 European airports. Behind the scenes is a complex transfer operation involving coaches, trains and boats aimed at getting guests as quickly as possible from their arrival airport to their chosen resort. All very different from 1934!

Baggage Guide One thing that hasn’t changed in the last 85 years is the thorny question of baggage allowances. As the ‘Inghams 33lbs Baggage Guide’ (shown above) illustrates it was a problem back in the 1950’s and 60’s! Fascinating to see that gentlemen were expected to get by on 1 pullover, 3 sets of vests and pants and 4 pairs of socks and that ladies were recommended to take 2 pairs of gloves and 12 handkerchiefs!

Rucksack & Boot Fitting Don’t forget, Inghams guests receive a

Your boots and rucksack are essential pieces of kit for any adventure. Having them fitted correctly by Cotswold Outdoor’s in-store experts will ensure you stay comfortable and have the support you need. Here are Cotswold Outdoor’s key steps to make sure your boots and rucksack fit you perfectly.

15% DISCOUNT at Cotswold Outdoor. Full T&Cs apply. Offer expires 31.12.19.

Boot Fitting 1

Test the length of the boot

2

Plant your foot and lace the boot

You should be able to fit your index finger down the back of the boot easily with your foot inside and the boot unlaced.

Rucksack Fitting 1

Locate your hip bone and attach the hip straps

With your fingers, locate the uppermost part of your hip bone, then fasten the hip strap. Usually this will be in line with the top of the hip bone or slightly higher if more comfortable.

2

Tighten the laces from the toe then work your way up the boot. If the boot is too small, the laces will bulge; too big and excessive tension will be required.

3

Stand up

If your toes touch the ends when you stand, consider a larger pair as this will quickly become uncomfortable, particularly on descents.

4

Shift your weight

5

Use your hands

6

Get used to them

Your feet should feel well supported and comfortably held in place when shifting your weight around.

Feel all around the boots; ideally, you should feel that the foot is evenly filling the entirety of the boot.

If you can walk around the house for an hour or two feeling supported, without any rubbing or pinching, then your boots are probably a good fit.

Assess the shoulder straps

The tops of the shoulder straps should be just tucked in behind your shoulders with the rest of the strap following the natural contours of your back.

3

Adjust the back length

If the shoulder straps don't fit correctly, you will need to remove the bag and adjust the back length. Achieving the correct back length will allow the shoulder straps to follow the curvature of your shoulders.

GLORIOUS GARDENS

Glorious Gardens throughout Europe

LAKE CONSTANCE, GERMANY

One of the questions our Resort Reps are most frequently asked is "Are there any gardens nearby we can visit?' So whether you're someone who simply enjoys wandering through and exploring new gardens or an experienced gardener who knows all the plants' Latin names and is just looking for inspiration, we hope that this feature on Glorious Gardens will help you with your Lakes & Mountains holiday selection. The gardens of Lake Constance are many and diverse. The medicinal garden on Reichenau Island and the herb garden and labyrinth of the former monasteries of Salem and Ittingen, the gardens of Arenenberg Castle and the world famous 'Flower Island of Mainau' are all considered to be some of Germany's most impressive floral displays.

BERNESE OBERLAND, SWITZERLAND A scenic mountain railway ride will take you to the Schynige Platte Botanical Alpine Garden. Located behind the Pitti Palace in Florence, the Boboli Gardens are one of the greatest open-air museums in the world. The park houses centuries-old oak trees, sculptures, fountains and are a shady retreat from the heat of the day. The Medici family established the layout of the gardens which in time became the model for many European courts including the famous Versailles in Paris.

Lake Garda’s resorts are ideal for garden lovers. Isola del Garda, the lake’s biggest island, features a Venetian style villa with Italian and English gardens, and guided tours by the Cavazza family owners. The Parco Giardino Sigurtá near Peschiera was Napoleon III’s headquarters, and near Gardone you’ll find the Andre Heller Botanical Gardens, with streams, waterfalls, topiary and sculptures to enjoy.

ISCHIA, ITALY

You’ll need to take a boat trip to these gardens but trust us, it’s well worth it. Flor & Fjaere Gardens on an island north of Stavanger are unlike any others in the world and a real paradise for garden lovers. Your guide can book the day excursion for you and a meal is included.

Slovenia has some wonderfully lush gardens with the Ljubljana Botanical Gardens the best known. Established in 1810, the gardens showcase more than 4,500 different species throughout an arboretum, tropical glasshouse, water-gardens and a Mediterranean area. Garden lovers will also enjoy the International Wild Flower Festival in Bohinj held every year at the end of May/beginning of June.

In 1956, Lady Susana Walton, the wife of the composer, William Walton, commissioned the La Mortella Gardens which have become world famous for their dramatic location overlooking the Mediterranean. There’s a collection of rare and exotic plants with fountains, streams and ponds scattered everywhere. Other features include the Thai House, the three tropical greenhouses and William’s Rock where the late composer’s ashes are kept.

LAKE COMO, ITALY The lakeside villas here are reminders of more elegant times, and several have gardens open to visit, including Villa Melzi on the outskirts of Bellagio, and Villa Balbianello. Villa Carlotta between Cadenabbia and Tremezzo has gardens full of tropical plants, rare conifers, and stunning camellias, azaleas and rhododendrons - the perfect setting for its classical concerts during July and August.

SALZBURG, AUSTRIA Enjoy the famous Mirabell Gardens, as featured in the Sound of Music film. Opened by Emperor Franz Joseph in 1854, they are recognised worldwide as a horticultural masterpiece, with unusual features including the Hedge Theatre and the Dwarf Garden’s marble sculptures. Quirkier still are the Water Gardens at Hellbrunn Palace, with their wasserspiele and trick fountains.

Schönbrunn Palace & Gardens are an awe-inspiring, baroque delight, with extensive formal gardens showcasing the glories of the palace, together recognised as a World Heritage Site. The Belvedere Palace & Gardens combine colourful flora with impressive statuary, fountains and water features, and wonderful views of the city centre, and the nearby University Botanical Garden is also well worth a visit.

Garden lovers staying on Lake Maggiore are spoilt for choice! Isola Bella is a garden-island especially noted for its spectacular springtime display of azaleas, camellias and rhododendrons. Isola Madre is another elaborate villa on a pretty island, with gardens full of rare vegetables and flowers. The Villa Taranto in Pallanza is yet another ‘must see’, as is the Botanic Garden Alpinia.

INNSBRUCK, AUSTRIA At 2,000m, the Alpengarten Patscherkofel is the highest botanical garden in Europe, featuring edelweiss, gentian and over 400 alpine species across its 2½ acres. It is easily reached by cable-car from Igls, just 6km bus-ride from Innsbruck. Nearby is the Zirbenweg - a panoramic hiking path which runs above Innsbruck for 7km through the oldest pine forest in the Alps.

Summer Moments

ITALY Italy of course, has always been a foodie’s paradise. Sandro, who heads up our Italian contracting team, tells us:

We Love

“My favourite restaurant is ‘Rose e Sapori’ in Desenzano. It’s right on the lakeside and serves the most divine pasta dish, Tagliatelle ai porcini con Basso di Bagolino (pictured left) - tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms and Bagoss cheese from the province of Brescia. My favourite wine - Ca’ dei Frati - is one from the Sirmione area and served chilled, is a great end to a perfect day on the lake.”

FOOD

The Bardolino Wine Festival on Lake Garda Marks the end of the summer season and is a great chance to sample the fine local wines.

FEAST! Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, a Lakes & Mountains holiday won’t do your waistline any favours! All our half board hotels offer local dishes and very often also have themed evenings and barbecues. But it’s always nice to eat out during the day and occasionally in the evenings so we’ve asked some of our team what their particular food and wine favourites are.

NORWAY As you’d expect from a seafaring nation, Norway’s favourite dishes are mainly fish based using salmon, cod, herring, sardine and mackerel. Norwegians are said to be amongst the healthiest people in the world so they seem to have got it right! Imported wines are expensive and Jessica, our Product Manager for Norway advises sticking to the local beers, orup and coruja ciders and trying Krumkake, meaning bent cake, a Norweigan waffle cookie made of flour, butter, eggs, sugar and cream.

AUSTRIA Austrians of course will always tell you that their cuisine is better than Italy’s. Andy, our Operations Manager in Austria, fights their corner saying his favourite will always be the Wiener Schnitzel, thin slices of veal rolled in flour, whipped eggs and breadcrumbs. Served with a Kopfsalat (lettuce) or parsley potatoes he says it can’t be beaten. And in Vienna, he’s been spotted many times tucking into the famous Sachertorte, a yummy chocolate cake with an apricot filling! Andy’s favourite wine? Without a doubt, Grüner Veltliner, a bright and spicy white.

SWITZERLAND Mention Switzerland and most people’s first thought is of chocolate but Andrea, who’s responsible for Inghams hotel contracting there, says that her ideal evening is enjoying a Cheese Fondue - bread cubes dipped in melted cheese in the traditional caquelon fondue pot, with a group of friends. Or perhaps Raclette - melted cheese served with Gschwellti (jacket potatoes), gherkins and onions. Swiss wines are not so well known abroad but its high altitude vineyards produce some real stunners.

FRANCE

SLOVENIA Our Product Manager for Slovenia, Damjana, who’s a great cook herself, recommends if you’ve got a sweet tooth, that you head for Lake Bled where the Kremsnita (pictured above) - a glorious vanilla custard and cream combination in puff pastry is to die for! And Slovenian wines punch well above their weight. They’re really excellent and as very little is exported to the UK, make the most of them whilst you’re there!

Our French colleagues would be greatly insulted if we didn’t mention them in this feature. Dave, our own Executive Chef in France, tells us that the rich cuisine found in the French Alps originates from a time when mountain villages could be cut off for months and villagers lived on what they could produce themselves. One of Dave’s favourites is Tartiflette (pictured above), a simple but tasty dish of potatoes, Savoyard cheese, bacon lardons, cream, white wine and onions. Of course too, the mountainous Savoie region produces some exceptional wines.

The capital city of Rome is Italy’s masterpiece. You can marvel at the Colosseum, Vatican City and Roman Forum with just 48 hours in the city, thanks to a UNESCO-listed historic centre with a roll call of millennia-old ruins and soaring domes. Away from the well-worn paths, Rome has plenty of surprises up its sleeve. Dive into tangled medieval neighbourhoods like Trastevere for narrow trattoria-lined streets and hidden chapels.

And just when you think you’ve seen it all, the city changes. An ever-changing flow of new restaurants, art exhibitions and festivals means that there’s always an excuse to revisit to Rome.

ITALY, VERONA ITALY, FLORENCE The Tuscan capital of Florence is a city made by art lovers for art lovers. The Renaissance took its first steps here in the 15th century, painting the city with architectural wonders like the Palazzo Pitti and Uffizi Gallery. Climb to the top of Florence Cathedral - Il Duomo - to admire a skyline sculpted from Gothic towers, domes and terracotta rooftops. That’s where you’ll also discover how small Florence is. Best explored by foot, you can easily wander the UNESCO listed city centre in a day.

Famous for its opera festival, which runs throughout the summer at the city’s Roman Arena, Verona is the perfect destination for a short city break. Easily combined with a longer break to the shores of Lake Garda, the pink marble city is an unforgettable destination.

Had your fill of Michelangelos and da Vincis? It’s time to explore Florence’s other love - food. Finish off your day with a Florentine steak or settle down with a glass of Chianti sourced straight from the Tuscan countryside.

AUSTRIA, VIENNA One of the most beautiful capital cities in the world, Vienna is a leading cultural hot-spot. The opera houses are alive with the sound of Mozart and Schubert, and the wealth of museums and art galleries display works from Renaissance artists through to the Modern masters.

SWITZERLAND, LUCERNE Occupying a stunning position on the banks of Lake Lucerne where the River Reuss meets the lake, Lucerne is a fascinating, colourful city winning the hearts of its many visitors. Small enough to discover on foot, explore the charming streets of the traffic-free ‘old-town’, with its frescoed buildings, delightful cafés, shops and boutiques, or drop by one of the city’s museums. Lake steamers regularly call in at the harbour, carrying guests to pretty lakeside villages such as Weggis and Vitznau, or to the local mountains of Mount Rigi, Stanserhorn and Pilatus Kulm, which all offer a good scope for walking.

Italy has been drawing visitors for centuries with miles of scenic coastline, ink-blue lakes backed by snow-capped mountains, historic cities, rolling countryside and incredible cuisine. We offer over 300 hotels throughout the country from family run properties to five-star resorts where every whim can be catered for. Whether your dream holiday is driving through vineyard dotted countryside, sipping a prosecco on the shores of Lake Como or relaxing on the Caribbean-like sands of Sardinia, we can help make it a reality.

Our Top Things To Do LAKESIDE HOLIDAYS

CULTURE & HISTORY

Backed by a breathtaking scenery of snowcapped mountains edged with grand villas and laidback towns, it’s easy to understand why Italy’s lakes remain so popular. Garda stretches from the countryside of the south to the Dolomites in the north. Maggiore has a relaxed atmosphere and Como is filled with chic lakeside cafés. Then there are the smaller lakes like Orta where you can escape the crowds and Iseo, the home of Franciacorta, Italy’s answer to champagne.

Italian culture and history are renowned across the world. From superb summer opera festivals to ancient Greek temples, it has it all. Choose from a short break in one of the country’s historic cities where you’ll find Florence’s Uffizi Gallery, Rome’s Colosseum or the world’s oldest university in Bologna. Or head to the coast to visit Pompeii, Taormina’s Greek amphitheatre or the well-preserved temples in Paestum.

WALKING & CYCLING

Top Tuscany Above Rome

Italy has some spectacular walks and cycle routes. The craggy Dolomite Mountains boast a huge number of trails that are suitable for all levels and detailed maps are provided by the hotels and tourist office. Some of our favourite walks can be found on the lakes, including the Old Ponale Road Trail, that starts in Riva del Garda and offers wonderful views across the lake to Monte Baldo. Tuscany is another popular destination for walkers and cyclists, with plenty of picturesque trails and fantastic wineries where you can stop for a tasting. Or head to the Amalfi Coast and its renowned ‘Path of Gods’, a 7.8 kilometre trek that winds along the cliff edge and has some of the best panoramas in the Neapolitan Riviera.

BEACH HOLIDAYS There are over 4,500 miles of coastline in Italy that’s as varied as it is beautiful. There’s the rugged edge of Puglia with stunning coves and authentic seaside villages, blue-flag awarded beaches in Liguria and picture-perfect towns clinging to the cliffs on the Amalfi Coast. Not forgetting the islands - from glamorous Sardinia with its stunning white sands and crystal clear water, to Sicily with a rich history and popular seaside towns.

RURAL RETREATS A slower pace of life, rolling countryside views and hearty Italian cuisine are a few of the delights you can expect when you stay in one of our countryside retreats. Choose from family-run agriturismi in the heart of Tuscany or amongst the olive groves in Puglia, or indulge in a luxurious countryside spa hotel to really feel like you’re getting away from it all.

MULTI-CENTRES Italy’s diversity makes it perfect for a multi-centre holiday. There’s so much to see and do here, and each region, town and village is unique. It’s easy to combine two or more resorts and high-speed rail lines between major cities mean you can be sipping a coffee in St. Mark’s Square in the morning and touring the Ufizzi Gallery by the afternoon.

What We Say... No area of Italy has surprised me more than the Dolomites. From the breathtaking heights you can reach either on foot or by E-bike to the crystal clear waters of the rivers that run through the villages, it feels like another world amongst the peaks of the Marmolada and Monte Civetta. Make sure you spend a day on the Edelweiss Valley walk where you can spot the paragliders, search for the rare flower named after the valley itself and of course, don’t forget to stop at a refugio for an Aperol once you get to the top!

Holiday destinations don’t come any more hearty than Austria. The vast valleys and breathtaking mountain towns are home to some of the best spa resorts. From the moment you set foot on Austrian terrain expect a relaxing experience. Everything is unhurried, there is a purity not found elsewhere. Hiking trails and boat links are ideal ways to explore Austria’s rich imperial architecture and cinematic peaks, valleys and lakes. Hidden amongst the beauty are family-run hotels that add to the welcoming and authentic atmosphere. They will take great pride in introducing you to the local delicacies and their culture.

WALKS & HIKES

GARDENS

Austria is a hikers dream, from majestic peaks to meandering valleys to rolling green hills blanketed in Alpine flora. Its unspoilt mountains and lakes ensure you leave with a new-found love for nature. Our Reps will help you map out endless trails and routes - and suggest walks to accommodate everyone. Many resorts have mountain lifts, making it easy for you to get up to the best views. Trails are always well signposted so you can find your way and navigate low and high Alpine areas with ease.

The Alpine flora is Austria’s showpiece, typical of its spectacular displays of meadow and open space. The Mirabell Gardens in Salzburg is one of the most beautiful baroque gardens in Europe. The Belvedere Palace gardens in Vienna are also a perfectly maintained display fit for royalty.

CYCLING & E-BIKES Travelling on two wheels in Austria means you get to experience more of its endless beauty. Its vast network of trails are designed to accommodate mountain bikers, e-bikers and cyclists looking to sightsee. Its charming mountain huts offer refreshments which provide the ideal respite.

GUEST CARDS AND TOURIST PASSES Many resorts and hotels offer free guest cards. These cards can include free or discounted travel on local buses or trains, entrances to various attractions and the use of the mountains lifts - perfect for exploring the local area.

EXCURSIONS Austria is culturally diverse and unique. Its scenery and architecture demonstrate a fusion of various European influences. Many of our adventures pass borders with other countries and our excursions give you an insight into its fascinating cultural roots.

STEAMBOATS & RAILWAYS

CITIES The cultural footsteps of the Habsburg empire can be felt everywhere in Austria - most notably in the imperial city of Vienna. Walk the Ringstrasse to see many of the main sights. Salzburg, known as ‘The Rome of the North’ is an absolute must-see. A city full of history, culture and notably ‘The Sound of Music’.

FAMILY HOLIDAYS Exploring the mountains and lakes as a family is a memorable experience. With a wealth of facilities, activities and trails to suit all ages, Austria is the perfect location to suit everyone. Alternatively, some hotels offer free child supervision and kids club so your options are flexible.

MULTI-CENTRE COMBINATIONS Due to the diverse nature of Austria, doing it justice in one trip can be difficult. Our multicentre combinations allow you to combine destinations so can you can fit more experiences into a single holiday.

FOOD & DRINK Indulge your taste buds, courtesy of the Austrian sweet tooth. Cakes have a long legacy here, each with their own unique taste and identity. Also try ‘Almdudler’ - an authentic Austrian soft drink based on mountain herbs and elderflower.

The vast network of railways in Austria is testament to the Austrian Empire. Built in the 19th century it features funiculars, steam trains and cog railways. Whilst the Salzkammergut lakes feature paddle steamers, ideal for those wanting a memorable way to take in the mountain scenery.

Summer in Switzerland is simply amazing. Its stunning scenery includes dramatic snow-dusted peaks, tranquil shimmering lakes with mild climate, impressive gorges, gushing waterfalls and world-famous mountains in between. Whether you venture just outside of town or all the way up a mountain, exploring Switzerland’s natural treasures will produce some great memories. From glaciers to palm trees, enjoy summer in Switzerland.

ARRIVING TO YOUR RESORT BY TRAIN Not only does public transport within Switzerland have an excellent reputation - travelling by public transport also means travelling comfortably. You can stretch your legs whenever you like and you will be able to see Switzerland from a new different perspective. You will arrive on time, relaxed and ready for an exciting holiday. Above Gerra, Lake Maggiore Left Couple on a herbal walk Bottom Couple enjoying a cheese fondue

EXPLORING SWITZERLAND We offer a variety of optional travel passes for the Swiss public transport system and we have included a Swiss Half-Fare Card, worth over ÂŁ90 for all guests travelling with us in to Switzerland. This card allows unlimited purchase of train, bus, boat and selected cable-car tickets at 50% discount. Children up to 15 years incl. travel free on the Swiss Transport Network when accompanied by a parent.

GUEST CARDS AND TOURIST PASSES Many holiday destinations offer complimentary guest cards, culture and wellness passes - which can include free or discounted travel on local buses, trains, mountain transport and entrances to various attractions.

TOURS AND MULTI-CENTRE COMBINATIONS Exploring Switzerland is best by scenic rail journeys. Inghams offer tours and tailormade multi-centre holidays, which give you the option to stay in two or more resorts. Both providing you with unforgettable travel on the famous scenic rail routes.

WELL-BEING WITH A VIEW The first thing you notice is the air. Mountain air is lower in allergens - hence purer and proven to boost your health. A number of hotels offer pools that have stunning views of lakes and the surrounding mountains, emanating calmness and serenity. Luxury spas and wellness centres in the hotels are nowadays a norm for relaxing holidays.

WALKING Lakeside strolls, meander through vineyards, flowery meadow walks, pine forests, shimmering mountain lakes and glacier hikes - the terrain is spectacular and varied. And all with the stunning snow-capped Alps as a backdrop.

GASTRONOMY Many hotels offer more than traditional Swiss fare. Alongside the national cuisine you will experience locally sourced ingredients incorporated in countless variations of international cuisine.

FAMILY HOLIDAYS Zero stress. That is what you want on your family holiday. And it is what some exceptional hotels and locations in Switzerland will provide. These locations are geared perfectly to the needs of both children and their parents or grandparents, allowing little ones to let off steam and grown-ups to enjoy some time to themselves. Children (up to 15 years incl.) travel free with the Family Card included in the price of your holiday.

TWO COUNTRIES We offer multi-centre tours with destinations that complement each other. Combine Chamonix in France with a trip on the Mont Blanc Express to Zermatt or a stay in Locarno can be combined with Stresa in Italy - both resorts perched on the edge of Lake Maggiore.

Summer Moments

Norway

NORWAY

Discover nature's greatest masterpiece

Norway's region of greatest natural beauty belongs in the fjords of the Western coastline and represent the iconic image that springs to travellers' minds when thinking about this awe-inspiring destination. Three of Norway's seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites are located in the fjords and picture postcard scenery is around every corner as you explore this unique landscape!

MULTI-CENTRE HOLIDAYS

Nowhere else in the world do you find such steep lush green mountains protruding from calm tranquil waters, with crystal blue glaciers glistening at the top. From Stavanger and the Pulpit Rock in the South, the historic city of Bergen towards the centre, to the vibrant Ålesund in the North, plus all the magnificent scenery in-between - stunning fjords, dazzling glaciers, magical mountain forests and impressive thundering waterfalls - you’re also sure to be met by the warm hospitality of the Norwegian people along the way.

Choose from one of our independent multicentre holidays to explore Norway’s stunning surrounds at your own pace.

With Inghams, you can explore this wonderful country as you wish - relax, enjoy some gentle activity, or explore the amazing landscape with the variety of excursions on offer which let you discover the true spirit of the fjords from both water and from land - see our website for details.

We have highlighted our most popular excursions to help you make the most of your holiday to Norway. Most of the day trips are done independently using the efficient local public transport system, which ensures you see the very best of the magnificent scenery.

We can't wait to share nature's masterpiece with you - velkommen til Norge!

TOURS Visits to Norway have never been so popular and our well-established group escorted tours offer the opportunity to discover this beautiful country with a trusted and knowledgeable guide. Join 'Highlights of the Fjords' for a South to North adventure or pick 'Capital to Coast on the Great Bergen Railway' to travel East to West- a unique opportunity in our programme to stay in Oslo.

What We Say...

Bottom Right Flor & Fjære Gardens (Stavanger)

Norway’s population may be small (circa 5 million) but this country dominates when looking for an awe-inspiring, friend envying, mighty mountain summer destination. The fjords appear to be carved by Gods; steep mountains are topped with crystal blue glaciers and adorned with thundering waterfalls.Whilst the fjords themselves offer calm and tranquil waters. One of the most enjoyable parts of Norway is the travelling. Flying over little islands on the way into Ålesund, switching from road to ferry to reach your destination or even the little Troll cars which take you to the top of the Briksdal Glacierall offer an insight into Norway’s stunning backdrop. FRANCE

Fantastic Alpine scenery and beautiful lakes

Whilst France is host to a similar population to the UK, it boasts a land approximately twice the size. With so much to offer, we can only scrape the surface of the wonderful places to visit. In central France many British summer visitors head for the Loire or the Dordogne regions but if you travel further south, our favourite destination is the breathtaking Alpine region, home to the highest mountain in our summer programme, Mont Blanc, which towers above Chamonix. The cuisine and wine are, of course, one of the most recognised and enjoyed aspects of French culture and our selection of hotels will certainly not disappoint. If you enjoy an active holiday, our resorts offer a huge array of activities perfect for all ages.

GLASS IGLOOS & AURORA CABINS Treat yourself to a night to remember

HUSKY SAFARIS Simply the perfect way to enjoy the natural wilderness

Lapland is a destination rich in wonders. It is home to unparalleled natural beauty, fantastic mythology and exhilarating adventure. And this incredible peaceful landscape, which is home to herds of roaming reindeer, is constantly changing throughout the year, making it the perfect escape to the fast pace of modern life. The snow falls early this far north. Snow begins to settle in November and with it come the long dark nights. In Finnish, this period is known as ‘Kaamos’ and it lasts from December to January. At this time the daylight only appears for a few hours and the long nights are the best time to hunt the Northern Lights. Choosing to spend the night in a thermal Glass Igloo or the secluded Aurora Cabin - offering you the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights are on the bucket list of activities for many of our guests. Mid-January to late February is the most evocative period in Lapland. During the day the sun only just rises above the horizon and the landscape is bathed in a perpetual rose-gold glow. With atmospheric snowmobile rides and exhilarating husky safari adventures to rural reindeer farms, what better time to explore the local Sámi culture? In March time the snow glitters in fabulous sunlight. It is a time of great activity, winter sports enthusiasts can ski or snowboard - and it’s the best time to go cross-country skiing along Lapland’s many kilometres of ski trails.

SNOWMOBILE ADVENTURES A chance to explore further into the Lapland ‘outback’

REINDEER SLEIGHS A gentler option to admire the scenery all ages can enjoy!

Inghams has over 20 years' experience of offering winter snow adventure holidays to this enchanting place. Thanks to our long-standing, close relationships with our partners, we are able to offer an excellent range of Lapland accommodation and activities for our guests to choose from, in all three of our winter snow holiday resorts.

Flight Schedules Because our flight schedules are published so far in advance, not all flight arrangements have been confirmed and all travel information in this brochure should be regarded as provisional. It is especially important to bear this in mind if you are booking separately any domestic connecting flights or trains which it may not be possible to amend or which may not be refundable in the event of any change. If any changes do occur which we regard as significant we will inform you or your travel agent. Final details including baggage allowances, check-in information etc. will be shown on the travel documentation which will be sent to you 2-3 weeks prior to departure. Departure Airport

KLM Flights via Amsterdam KLM offer departures from a variety of UK airports via Amsterdam. Please call for details,

Holidays by Rail

Resort Transfers

Fly-Luggage - Switzerland (Optional)

Travelling by train is a lovely way to just sit back and relax as the scenery drifts by. All our rail holidays depart by Eurostar from London St. Pancras to Paris Gare du Nord. Full details of holidays available travelling by rail from the UK can be found at inghams.co.uk.

Transfers are an important part of your holiday and we aim to make your journey to resort as smooth as possible. You will usually be met at the airport by an Inghams Rep and transferred to your accommodation from the airport by coach. Some holidays to Italy include car hire. Transfers in Switzerland, via Zurich and Geneva airports, are by train, using the excellent Swiss Transport Network and mountain railways. Your journey may involve changes of trains, and some transfers also involve travel by a local bus, boat or cable-car. Zurich and Geneva airports have railway stations within the airport.

Swiss Railways operate a service which enables you to send your luggage all the way from your UK airport, on check-in, to your hotel in Switzerland. This service is available to all guests flying to Zurich airport at an extra cost of £18 per item each way for the standard service. Swiss Railways have introduced an 'Express Service' with an administration fee of £24 per booking per sector in addition to the standard service charge. This service applies to selected destinations and delivers luggage quicker to resort (see online for more details).

Self-drive Holidays - Save up to £200 per couple Taking your own car and driving to your holiday destination from the UK can be a convenient way to travel at your own pace. We offer our self-drive holidays with return ferry or Eurotunnel channel crossings, instead of flights, for a reduced price. All we ask is that you arrive and depart your accommodation on the same days as our flight arrivals.

For Inghams Booking Conditions, please visit inghams.co.uk/terms-conditions l Denotes charter or committed scheduled flights. FREE child places available on these flights, subject to availability - please visit inghams.co.uk/terms-conditions Many of the flights and flight-inclusive holidays displayed in our brochures and on our website are financially protected by the ATOL scheme. But ATOL protection does not apply to all holiday and travel services listed in our brochures and on our website. Please ask us to confirm what protection may apply to your booking. If you do not receive an ATOL Certificate then the booking will not be ATOL protected. If you do receive an ATOL Certificate but all the parts of your trip are not listed on it, those parts will not be ATOL protected. Please see our booking conditions for information, or for more information about financial protection and the ATOL Certificate go to: www.atol.org.uk/atolcertificate.
