PATTAYA’S MISS MISS HUA HIN INTERNATIONAL CHARITY & DOG QUEEN LOVER CONTEST

Dear Friends, Welcome to our December 15th issue of HOT Hua Hin, Hua Hin’s #1 luxury lifestyle magazine. Thai-French Super Model Odette Henriette Jacqmin graces this month’s HOT Hua Hin cover for the 2nd time. This month’s cover was shot on location at Hua Hin’s Vana Nava Water Jungle. Opened December 1st, this one billion baht water park is sure to become Hua Hin’s #1 tourist destination, as well as a favorite for all locals. If you have read more than one issue of our magazine you will know that we are dog lovers. On November 21st HOT Hua Hin hosted our first Red Carpet Wine & Charity Gala Dinner at the Amari Hua Hin Seaside Resort to benefit the dog charity Rescue Paws. Close to 190 people joined in the festive evening which we cover fully on page 20. Part of the evening’s events included the crowning of the first Miss Hua Hin Charity and Dog Lover. Miss Hua Hin C.D.L. will be an Ambassador for HOT Hua Hin and for Rescue Paws promoting charity and good works in and around Hua Hin. Details of the contest as well as who was crowned the first Hua Hin C.D.L. start on page 18. Another big event happening in Hua Hin was the 12 annual Hua Hin Automobile Concours, held as always, at the Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin. This year’s Concours was the biggest to date delighting young and old who came to envy these classically restored automotive works of art, page 32. This month we also take you to Pattaya for the Miss International Queen competition. Similar in scope to the Miss Universe contest, this transgender competition brought 25 contestants from around the world to compete for the 10th anniversary crown, page 60. Finally, we at HOT Hua Hin would like to wish his Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej a very Happy & Healthy 87th Birthday. Long Live the King.

HUA HIN EXECUTIVE PROFILE

Ryan Kemp WHAT IS YOUR FULL NAME? AND AGE?

Ryan Kemp, Thai name “Singto” (Lion), 26 but looking and feeling older. What is your current Job Position? Owner of The Saxophone Lounge Hua Hin with my partner and friend David Heap, day to day job involves organizing bands, events and playing music. How long have you lived in Hua Hin or been coming to Hua Hin? I first came to Hua Hin around 4 years ago, I moved all over Thailand but eventually decided to settle here. WHAT DID YOU KNOW ABOUT HUA HIN BEFORE YOU MOVED HERE?

I knew there was a large expat community, it was coastal and without the sleaze of Pattaya and Phuket which I wanted to avoid. I had made a few trips here and enjoyed the place. You just got to find the good people and you have cracked it. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT YOUR PROFESSION?

My work is pretty fun all day through, from practicing in the day to playing during the night. Booking parties and chatting with the customers. My favorite part of the job is when people genuinely enjoy the music and their night out with us. It feels like a job well done come the end of the night. I also enjoy working with my team day to day, as it is a creative atmosphere.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE THE LEAST ABOUT YOUR PROFESSION?

Sometimes the hours are “hella” long, organizing the events during the day and then playing during the night, it can be pretty full on, but I consider myself lucky as there aren’t many things I dislike about what I do. Doing what I do has always been a dream of mine since I was a marketing manager for nightclubs in the UK. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT HUA HIN?

Its got to be the people, out of all the places in Thailand I have lived the people seem more proactive in charitable events and communication with the government on local issues. There is great charitable awareness, whether it is Rescue Paws charity working with Soi dogs, or dizzy bizzy Lizzy working for Thai children through Multi Culti. There is an enthusiasm and drive in people and the community. This seems to be growing exponentially and it will be exciting to see what comes of it all. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANT LOCALLY AND WHY?

I am a huge fan of Thai Wai based in Pak Nam Pran, Sunday afternoons they have a great jam session with fantastic pizza and Thai food in their garden. All the local Hua Hin expats get together there and it’s a good excuse to get out into the countryside.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR FREE TIME AND WHY?

I am an academic at heart, I like to keep the brain engaged and so do a lot of reading on Psychology (My Degree) and current affairs. I am just in the process of setting up a debate society too, so if anyone is interested get in touch at the lounge. WHAT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND TO NEW COMERS TO DO IN HUA HIN? AND WHY?

Get involved in projects, as there are plenty around and they are a great way to meet people and network. TELL US A SURPRISING FACT THAT PUBLIC MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU?

People probably don’t realize it but I’m pretty useless at formal learning, for example I have never taken a music lesson in my life despite the fact i seem to be able to get away with playing the saxophone on stage everynight! Recently I have actually had two lessons with a friend who is a superb professional saxophonist. WHAT IS THE MOST OUTLANDISH THING YOU HAVE EVER DONE? WHY?

Being a hedonist and downright eccentric, if you can imagine it i have probably done it, if not, invite me and I’ll try it.

HOT Hua Hin’s Red Carpet Wine & Charity Gala Dinner 2014 is a success

O

n the 21st of November, Hot Hua Hin Magazine & Hot Hua Hin Property hosted a Red Carpet Wine & Charity Gala Dinner at the Amari Hua Hin Seaside Resort. The aim of the evening was to raise money for Rescue Paws, an organization dedicated to helping homeless and helpless soi dogs. The owners of Hot Hua Hin, Russ Downing and Tanya Vijitsirisomphong are keen animal lovers who felt it was time there was a fun and glamorous event that benefitted homeless Soi Dogs in Hua Hin and Pranburi. They recognize that not everyone is a dog lover but they believe that sterilizing dogs and treating them against diseases such as rabies is good for everyone in Hua Hin.

18

Dec 15 - Jan 15 , 2015

Rescue Paws was chosen as the beneficiary due to their work in building a non-profit veterinary clinic at the Koh Tao Temple. The money generated from the evening will be used to help complete the clinic as well as paying the salary of an in house vet. Once completed, local dog charities will be able to bring their dogs who need medical attention or sterilization and be billed only for the cost of medicines. This will allow many more dogs to be treated as opposed to the current practice where soi dogs are taken to retail Veterinary Clinics. The charity was represented on the evening by Paang Panintorn and Jaco Kleinloog. The list of those in attendance read like the social registry of Hua Hin with former Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand, Khun Suwat Liptapanlop preceding over the evening as Honorary

Chairman. Hua Hin Mayor Nopporn Vuttikul and his wife were in attendance along with members from Hua Hin’s property sector, the Hua Hin Women’s Club, Khun Lizzy with Andrew Stocks and The Power of Love Organization, dog lovers and others just wanting to join in the revelry. It was an impressive sight as the guests started to arrive, especially the women of Hua Hin dressed in their beautiful evening gowns. The night started off with the guests receiving goodie bags with great gift items inside including a one of kind Rescue Paws bracelet, Spa items from Let’s Relax and designer Cork Screws from Homeless Furniture. The Amari’s GM, Christoph Leonhard arranged for the very best in buffet selection which was served with an abundance of free flow wine from 6 until 10pm. As soon as guests sat down, Robin Coster, the M.C. for the night outlined the evening’s events followed by the opening address by Khun Suwat Liptapanlop who not only showed his support by being the Honorary Chairman but also by donating 50,000 THB. The dinner was followed by a raffle and auction for those wanting to take advantage of great vouchers from the sponsors. Items on offer during the evening included 5 star hotel stays, food & beverage vouchers and spa treatments. The Auction was followed by a contest for the title Miss Hua Hin Charity & Dog Lover (C.D.L) 2014. The winner (see following story) will represent HOT Hua Hin Magazine and Rescue Paws charity during 2014-2015.

HOT Hua Hin would like to thank all of you who purchased tickets to the event, purchased raffle tickets, bought auction items and bought hearts for the Miss Hua Hin CDL contest. We would especially like to thank all our sponsors, those who donated items for the auction and raffle and those who donated cash. Those making cash donations include, Khun Suwat Liptapanlop, Electric Mango, Orchid Palm Homes, JW Property, Hua Hin Mazda, Princess Secret, Together Bakery and Hua Hin International School. Dec 15 - Jan 15 , 2015

T

he Miss Hua Hin Charity & Dog Lover contest was the brainchild of Tanya Vijitsirisomphong, the editor of this magazine. Her idea was to have a contest where the winner would be a role model for Hua Hin charitable endeavors which includes helping Hua Hin’s homeless street dog population. On Thursday December 20th all of the contestants met at the Wat Khao Tao to begin their day of charitable works. The ladies started by giving the Khao Tao Temple a deep cleaning much to the appreciation of the Monks who reside there. Next it was feeding, spending time and giving love to all of the ownerless dogs that live at the Temple. Finally the girls moved to the nearby beach where they all worked hard to clean it of debris for the betterment of all those who enjoy the area. After a full day of hard work it was off to Electric Mango for a pre-party event where the girls were taught how to walk and pose for the Gala Charity Dinner by Thai-French Supermodel, actress and singer Odette Henriette Jacqmin.

26

Dec 15 - Jan 15 , 2015

At Friday night’s gala dinner all of the contestants were presented on stage and were each asked a question that concerned charity and how they felt about Hua Hin’s street dogs. Based on their answers as well as the enthusiasm they showed at the previous day’s event the winners were chosen. The fourth runner-up was Khun Thanaphorn Sonchit, third runner- up was Khun Gingkarn Siriphon, second runner-up was Khun Nareerat Homleart, first runner-up was Khun Lisa Hedlund, and the winner of the Miss Hua Hin CDL contest was Khun Pornthavee Phuyardfha, representing Market Café. Before the winners were announced there was a competition for Miss Popular Hua Hin. Guests had the opportunity to buy hearts for 100 baht each. Each contestant walked on stage and was then given hearts by those who felt she should win Miss Popular Hua Hin. Ms. Namfon Srileam representing Electric Mango won the Miss Popular Contest and over 48,000 baht in total was raised for Rescue Paws through the sale of hearts. Miss Hua Hin CDL’s first assignment will take her outside of Hua Hin, to the Northern Province of Tak where she will give away warm coats to needy children of this chilly province.

AUTOMOBILE CONCOURS at Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin

C

lassic cars are a time capsule, especially ones that have been restored to how they looked rolling off the factory floor. The 50’s with their tail fins echoing the era of the time - the space race. The larger the fins the more fabulous. The 60’s with the dawn of the muscle car was incredible. Cars are an expression of who we are, for a lot of people it truly is a love affair. On November 28th through the 30th, the Centara Grand Beach Resort and Villas Hua Hin was once again the stage where owners showed their love affair with their classic cars. For the 12th year in a row the Centara in Hua Hin organized this colorful and memorable event. This year Monsoon Valley Wines joined in along with Dr. Prachin Eamlumnow, President and CEO of Grand Prix International Co. Ltd, Prachub Khirikhan, Petchaburi,

Hua Hin Municipality and with support from a select group of five-star hotels in Hua Hin everyone joined hands to create the largest classic car event in Thailand’s history. Everyone worked together to make this great event a celebration in recognition of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 87th Birthday. The three-day event has become regarded as one of Thailand’s most colourful events, bringing together the country’s top passionate collectors for a stunning display of forty classic cars. The event featured a fun-filled program of activities and fine dining. Friday evening there was a Great Gatsby styled Gala Dinner at the Venezia for the classic car owner’s and their guests. Saturday’s festivities included a car parade along with an enticing exclusive lunch at the Banyan Golf Course. On Saturday evening a glamourous “Cocktail Hats and Bowties”

themed gala dinner took place around the Colonial Pool of Centara Grand Beach Resort and Villas Hua Hin with over 360 guests who enjoyed a fantastic night including live jazz music, auctions, a fashion show and the awards ceremony. The revenue generated from organizing this event after deducted expenses will be donated to the Chaipattana Foundation. Additional donations included 12 bicycles to the Chang Hua Man Royal project, 87 bicycles to underprivileged children in Prachuab Khirikhan and Petchaburi Provinces, and 87 wheelchairs donated to representatives of disabled individuals, the Hua Hin Hospital, Petchaburi Panyanukul, and to the foundation for disabled people in Hua Hin.

T

he Phuket International Boat show recently announced that Bakri Cono Shipyard, based in Pattaya, will be exhibiting their Helitrope 65, the world’s first solar assisted luxury catamaran at their upcoming boat show on the docks of the Royal Phuket Marina January 8th thru the 11th. With an overall length of 65ft (20m) and a beam of 26ft (8m) the Heliotrope 65 could be compared to a small floating island. At nearly 50 sqm, the flybridge comes complete with a fully furbished BBQ galley with plenty of space to laze around, the perfect spot for cruising amongst the unexplored islands of the world. Driven by her two commercial rated Volvo Penta Marine D9-500Hp engines, she is safe for a speedy run to port at 22+ knots and has a long range of over 2,000 km at a cruising speed of about 16 knots. At rest, there is a wonderful unique feature not found on any other yachts. With more than 40 sqm of solar panels and two small vertical axis wind chargers, the Helitrope can produce up to 7 kW of power per hour. The energy is stored in its massive battery bank allowing the owner and his guests the ability to truly enjoy the sounds of nature without the usual continuous rumbling of the electric generators. While anchored at a paradisiac island, the solar and wind power provides enough energy to run your 4x300 Lt deep freezer, 2 kitchen fridge’s, and your 279 Led Hella marine Lights full time. There is also ample power to run your 4 plate induction cooker, 8kg laundry machine, professional dish washing machine and of course the 96,000 BTU Air Con. Plus, you will still have power for your water maker and your multi zone fusion entertainment system. The Helitrope 65 comfortably sleeps 6 in 3 staterooms and has an additional crew cabin that sleeps 2. Heliotrope’s tender is jet propelled and can be refueled without having to carry fuel canisters. With her very low draft of 1.05 m, she can access unbelievable places and heavenly areas which no sailing boat can. Further exhibitors announced include the Gibbs Quadski, the first amphibious Jet Ski. In the non-boat luxury category, Rolls Royce will be displaying their iconic Phantom and Wraith models and Aston Martin, the car of choice for James Bond since 1964, will be displaying their very latest models. HOT Hua Hin Magazine is a proud media partner of the 2015 Phuket International Boat Show and we’ll be attending all 4 days of the event. We look forward to bringing it to you in our Feb 15th issue.

HOT FOOD REVIEW Molina Italian Wine & Cuisine

M

olina Italian Wine and Cuisine or just Molina as it is affectionatly called is a restaurant that seems to attract Italian food lovers from both the local expat community, but also the local and Bangkok Thai’s. It doesn’t hurt that the place is run by Mink Mattana and partner Carlo Alberto Molina who have not only a combination of food experience, one is Italian, The other loves Italy and its food & wines and they are kind of the IT-pair in town. Combine this with a beautifully designed restaurant, not intimidatingly so, but an Italian restaurant with an industrial chic feel in a cozy way. You can sit in the air conditioning surrounded by wood and cement features or in a more casual atmosphere outside watching the world go by. Molina is located right next to Cicada market and in the weekends this is a great spot to people watch and also mingle with the cool Hua Hinians that stop by. The HOT Hua Hin Team has been a bit busy lately so we took the opportunity to multi task by working whilst sampling the food, but this means in no way that we do not remember and appreciate the food. As a matter fact as I write this I am thinking “I need a Molina pizza soon, very soon to pacify my Italian tooth!” Our Italian style lunch started off with

42

Dec 15 - Jan 15 , 2015

the half n half Molina special and Nduja sausage and mascarpone cheese Pizza. This is a real Italian pizza with dough thin as paper with quality ingredients as toppings making impossible not to eat the whole thing. Note the pizzas are standard size but because the dough is light and the pizza is delicious I highly recommend not to share except if more food has been ordered. The pizza is too good to nicely share around, be selfish eat the whole thing yourself, you will thank me later. This dish was followed by the Classic Risotto Porcini, a dish popular in the North of Italy and basically consists of rice cooked with broth and mushrooms to make it a creamy consistency. The Molina Risotto was light and airy as Risotto should be when done correctly. I am not normally a big fan of Risotto just because it often is oily and just not up to my European expectations. So I was happy to find a real home cooked Italian Risotto cooked with love and a lot of elbow grease. Risotto done right takes a lot of work but tastes divine. Next to follow was the New Zealand roasted lamb chop served with balsamic sauce on top of potato wedges and vegetables. This is just too scrumptious and I suggest you ditch the fork and knife and eat like it should be with your hands. The meat is really tasty, tender and

seasoned just right. I have to admit I did not really even get to taste too much of the condiments as I was intent on eating as many pieces of the lamb I could. This is a winner! It is strange that in this food review I was served to things I have tried to avoid one being the Risotto for above mentioned reasons but the second was the dessert Tiramisu. To justify my avoidance I used to work in a restaurant famous for their Tiramisu and it was common that we would over indulge in Tiramisu after big function where big trays of this stuff would be left over. So I was just Tiramisud out! But the Molina’s Tiramisu is Divine! I ate it layer by layer rather than scoping all the way to the bottom of the glass as I wanted to taste the Tiramisu bit by bit prolonging the end of it. I am not sure how they make it so creamy but whatever they are doing they are doing it right. HOT SCORE: I really like the casual feel of this chic restaurant but I love even more the energy and good eccentricity of the owners. The restaurant is so much an expression of them, that even with beautiful ambience and food it still would not be the same without Carlo Alberto and Mink being the driving forces. So this restaurant has it all, no wonder all guests

feel at home no matter where they are from. As for the food, all the food was good but the Lamb Chop was exceptional, and if you are into lamb chops or meat in general this is a must try. The Pizza has been praying on my mind and it is because it combines for me all the things a real Italian pizza should be like and not being silly its calling me like siren “come back and eat some more”. If into Italian Risotto’s, then you should check out the traditional Molina Risotto Porcini. I will personally be back soon. HOT SPA REVIEW

The Spa Villa

T

he Spa Villa is the resident Spa of Banyan The Resort and maybe because of this many mistake it as an exclusive only for residents and guests but actually the Spa is open to outside guests as well. It was my first visit to the Spa and I was looking forward to seeing how Banyan The Resort catered to their Spa clientele. First of all, although the Spa is small in size it makes up for it by being luxurious as would be expected by Banyan’s standards. The thing that surprised me the most was the affordability of their packaged treatments when you see the quality of their treatments and the atmosphere you get in return. The Spa has only two treatment rooms but both are appointed in the same sty le as the Banyan The Resort resident villas meaning large treatment rooms with huge private changing /

bathrooms. The Spa does the usual facials, massages, manicures & pedicures etc. There are little touches that I immediately liked, for example to reach the Spa you park in the main lobby and you’re driven by buggy to the Spa to reduce traffic and thus noise level. Second item that pleased me is that the Spa Manager asked pointed questions to find out your needs and then recommended an option for a treatment or two. In the Spa Villa the lovely Spa Manager Khun Meena kindly suggested a treatment suited to my current condition and mood but on top of that she would chose an oil to use to suit my blood type. This type of product by blood type is currently very popular in Asia but it was my first time in running into it in Thailand. In many countries in Asia bars even

recommend drinks by blood type and prospective job seekers are also chosen by their abilities plus their blood type. For me I am ashamed to say I do not know my blood type but thought B sounded good and the general description seemed to fit me. So we used the Oil for Blood type B as it has a calming effect which I am known to be in need of. The oil is based on Green tea, ginseng, grape seed oil plus an essential oil with balancing Ylang Ylang and Lavender. As mentioned, the Spa has many treatments to choose from but currently they are having four popular packages at very affordable rates. The four popular packages are; Body Scrub followed by Aromatherapy Massage, Thai Massage followed by Foot Massage, Aromatherapy Massage followed by Back, Neck & Shoulder Massage or Body Scrub followed by a Facial. All the treatments last around 1.5 hours to two hours and the rates vary between 1200 thb to max 2000thb. My final choice was the Aromatherapy Massage with Back, Neck and Shoulder Massage for 90 minutes at an affordable 1500 THB! The treatment is done in a luxurious private room with all the details that you would be expect in such a a place, such as temperate air conditioning, soothing light music and hushed atmosphere. The massage starts off with cleaning of your feet and after that they commence the Aromatherapy Massage with the chosen calming oil. The therapist was very experienced as I can’t say I would have enjoyed a forceful massage with my knotted and stressed back. As the massage progressed she gradually moved to trying to work out the problem spots but only once I had relaxed for awhile. The one hour Aromatherapy Massage melts into the 30 minute Back, Neck and Shoulder massage without waking you up from the semi sleep that you are in. When I finished the treatment I felt surprisingly alert and refreshed without pain in the back. My only wish would have ben that I could have continued napping in the room with the door firmly bolted, but alas other guests needed a treatment too. HOT SCORE: What I like about this Spa is the affordability of the packages but also the very exclusive feeling of the Spa as it is so intimate. The Spa feels like your own personal luxury home and whilst there you feel like a wealthy “puying” having a luxury treatment in your own home. What I also liked about the Spa is that somebody has put in a lot thought into the small details that makes the place elevated from just a place that offers treatments to a bonafide Spa. BANFI WINE NIGHT AT LA GRAPPA With its pride-of-place, prominently in the entertainment district, La Grappa Ristorante is going from strength to strength. The arrival of famed Chef, Eraldo Colazzo, to Hua Hin’s leading Italian Restaurant was celebrated in an earlier edition. Already his impact is asserting. In addition to a Head Chef freshly from Italy, La Grappa on November 28th hosted the introduction of a renowned range of Italian wines. Although it has roots going back to 1860, Castello Banfi (actually named for an aunt of the Mariani family) was founded only in 1978. The well-heeled Mariani brothers preside over a state-of-the-art wine-making, passionately dedicated to a finer wine world. Banfi’s several thousand acres of vineyards fare mostly in Tuscany, but also in Piedmont, in sites carefully selected for their unique terroir. Banfi wine-making is under the direction of foremost Italian oenologist, the striking Ezio Rivella. La Grappa delighted guests with a comprehensive introduction to Banfi’s breadth and depth, sampling six of the Banfi range

- also available directly from Independent Wines & Spirits, or in stock at Hua Hin’s Mondo Vino. Banfi Le Rime was the welcoming quaff. This blend of chardonnay and pinot gris grape varieties, delighted this normally “ABC” girl (= Anthing But Chardonnay). La Grappa’s chose a smoked salmon mousse hors d’oeuvre to complement this crisp and light delight. Dinner’s first course was an oyster ‘surprise’ stuffed with crabmeat, and served with Banfi’s, aromatic, San Angelo Pinot Grigio. The wine was universally enjoyed, though it was noted a magazine publisher ate around the oyster. Chianti, from the Sangiovese grape variety on which Banfi’s clonal research is becoming renowned came next. Just a hint of mineral from the calcareous soils in the classical area between Florence and Siena on which these grapes are grown, set off a stunning, thick and flavoursome brown lentil and San Daniele ham Velouté. The richness of La Grappa’s ravioli of Luganega Sausage with Fondue of Taleggio cheese and saffron merited at least a mediumbodied red wine. Banfi’s Centine – a Sangiovese/ Cabernet Sauvignon/ Merlot blend fit the bill perfectly. Black cherry and tart plum flavours with spice are characteristics. Superb, tender, Fassona beef with caponata (traditionally, a Sicilian vegetable dish customised by Chef Eraldo), also merited a full-bodied wine. Banfi’s deep and intense red, Belnero – a Sangiovese-dominant blend - did justice with its well balanced tannins. For those with any capacity remaining, the degustation completed with a La Grappa’s awesome Chestnut Mont Blanc. Not to be outdone, Banfi paired this with Brachetto d’Acui Rosa Regale. This fruity Rosé – delicate bouquet, fresh raspberry recognizable, provided a luscious finish to the course and evening. Hua Hin’s discerning gourmands are already growing impressed with Chef Eraldo’s influence at La Grappa.

Santiago, who wore a shimmery white evening gown, laughed and said “Sleep!” when asked about her plans after the win. “When on stage, she is so elegant and that’s why the judges’ decision was unanimous,” said Seri Wongmontha, one of the pageant’s judges. The 1st runner-up for Miss International Queen was Nitsa Katrahong from Thailand with Piyada Inthavong from Lao named as the second. The contest, in its tenth year, was held at the Tiffany’s nightclub, famous for its transvestite cabaret. HOT HOTEL REVIEW

W

hen selecting a hotel, I like to visit the Trip Advisor website to read the comments from prior guests of their actual experiences. With an impending stay at the Chatrium Riverside Hotel in Bangkok I found the review page especially revealing. The headlines read, “Perfection + Value + Luxury”; “Amazing! Would 100% go back!”; “Friendly staff and nice view”. A Malaysian reviewer effused, “The room is big and the staff are friendly. They know the day I check in is my birthday and they prepare a cake for me”. It is precisely these little extras that differentiates a five-star hotel from a four-star. After spending several wonderful days at the Chatrium Riverside I have to report the comments posted on Trip Advisor are accurate and unexaggerated. I would echo them all. From the moment of driving up to the entry, we were made to feel welcome and special. The Chatrium Riverside is located on the Chao Phraya River, on the business side of town. This means when traveling from Hua Hin you cross the Rama 9 Bridge and then navigate to the hotel. For rooms, the Chatrium offers mostly suites in a 1, 2 or 3 bedroom configuration. All suites are large and spacious and include a kitchen, separate lounge area, a spacious deck from which to soak in the river or city views and supremely-appointed bedrooms and bathrooms. For those who prefer a room to a suite, the Chatrium offers their “Grand Rooms”. At 60 square meters in size, these are also generously spacious. If you feel like relaxing all day at the hotel, enjoying their luxurious facilities, (as we did on day one), rest assured you will never be bored. The swimming pool is massive, majestically positioned overlooking the river. There is also a smaller pool with Jacuzzi jets. The full-service restaurant at the pool area delivers food and drinks right to your sun-lounger. To offset this indulgence, or for the health conscious, the Chatrium’s fitness facility is superlatively equipped to get your body pumping. When one’s appetite rises, there are six – yes, count ‘em - six options within the property to satisfy the urge. The lobby level River Barge Restaurant is the choice of venue for breakfast, taking in the ebb, flow and action upon the Chao Phraya River. For lunch and dinner there is an à la cart menu of Thai and International favorites. Alternatively, for dinner only there is a freshly prepared International buffet with sensational cooking stations and live entertainment.

If you feel like treating yourself then get in the elevator and press floor 36. Here you will find the exciting Silver Waves Restaurant with its truly breathtaking panorama of the Chao Phraya and Bangkok skyline. The river inspired décor and authentic live entertainment provides a truly immersive culinary experience in which to savour the flavours of their Chinese delights. This facility also includes four private dining rooms in a variety of sizes, ideal for hosting private parties. Further restaurant choices include the Chartrium’s ‘Pier 28’, their Lobby Lounge, room service and their ‘Treat Gourmet’ corner offering scrumptious baked goods and delicious coffee. Speaking of coffee, there is an on-site Starbucks and a 7-11, oh, thank heaven. A really enjoyable feature of staying at the Chatrium Riverside are the boats. Not only the flotilla of bustling boats you see from your suite plying the river, but also the Chatrium’s exclusive boat for the complimentary use of their guests. This service can drop you at the BTS Sky Train

station, linking easily with the heart of Bangkok. A relaxing boat ride to Thaksin Station adds an extra layer of charm to the riverside location. Of course you don’t have to take a boat; there are an abundance of taxis poised to take you anywhere you desire. But a ride on beautiful, Thai-style vessel is a calming and exotic experience not to be missed whilst a guest at the Chatrium. A further virtue of the Chatrium Riverside’s location, is the easy walk to Asiatique; a favorite Bangkok entertainment destination treasured by Bangkokian’s and tourists alike. A trigger for our booking of the Chatrium was that we held tickets to see American Music entertainer Kenny G., performing before a sold out crowd at Asiatique on Sunday November 16th. The Chatrium’s convenient location, and ease of access before and after the show, really made the occasion. Kenny G. would agree as he was also staying at the Chatrium. For Thai’s and expats with valid work permits, the Chatrium offers a very special rate. Starting from THB 2,877++ per night in their spacious 60 sqm Grand Room

City view with balcony. Breakfast is included for up to two registered guests and they offer a complimentary extra bed and breakfast for one child up to 14 years of age. Complimentary internet is provided as well as free use of their shuttle boat. They also are happy to give complimentary room upgrades applicable to 1 and 2 bedroom Grand Suites. Be sure to book through their website to qualify for the above as well as be treated to a Welcome Drink upon arrival, 500 baht to be used on chargeable hotel facilities as well as early check-in and late check-out when rooms are available. This offer is valid from now until 31 October 2015 with blackout dates from 29 December 2014 - 01 January 2015. The next time you’re planning a trip to Bangkok, seriously consider the Chatrium Riverside. The service, the views, the rooms and the price are impossible to beat. As with Trip advisor’s happy clients, I’ll definitely be coming back. www.chatrium.com – info@chrb@chatrium.com +66 (0)2307 8888

HOT GETAWAY

Dec 15 - Jan 15 , 2015

Khao Kho, Phetchabun

T

his month’s HOT Getaway takes us to the province of Phetchabun. Located approximately seven hours by car from Hua Hin, Phetchabun is almost the middle point of Thailand.

This province is rich with natural attractions like the Nam Nao National Park, which features a large number of wild animals that can be spotted while trekking; and the Than Thip Waterfall, which is a popular place for swimming. Khao Kho National Park, has been referred to as “The Switzerland of Thailand” because of its beautiful scenery and cool weather. Khao Kho is also home to Wat Pha Sorn Kaew,

a spectacular Buddhist temple adorned with over 5 million colorful mosaic tiles [6] and pottery items and is set in a breathtaking mountain location. Phetchabun borders three regions of Thailand, the North, Central, and Northeast. The central part of Phetchabun province is in the Pa Sak River basin and contains mountain ranges running along both the western and eastern sectors. Because of the fertility of the land, Phetchabun has always been an agriculturally productive area. The very name of the province derives from a name meaning “the land of crops and foods.”

Dec 15 - Jan 15 , 2015

Phetchabun also features a rich history dating back more than 1,400 years, the height of which occurred after the 11th century when the city was a point of contact between the Dvaravati and Khmer Empires. The city was a prosperous center and a number of ruins remain for visitors to appreciate at Si Thep Historical Park. During the period between 1968 to 1982 communist insurgents established their base in the mountains in this province. From hidden locations they fought occasional skirmishes against the Thai Army. If you like beautiful natural scenery and miss the cool temperatures of your home country then Phetchabun, “The Switzerland of Thailand deserves a visit.
