Editor’s Note

Darlings, pull out your yacht key and adjust your designer sunglasses, because this month's HOT is serving up a banquet of brilliance that would make even Croesus count his coins twice.

First, we're unrolling an epic tale of entrepreneurial excellence with the Oei Tiong Ham Concern, Asia's first modern business empire that turned sugar into sweeter-than-sweet success. From commanding 60% of Java's sugar market to revolutionizing Asian business philosophy, this story has more twists than a Cartier bracelet. The "Rockefeller of Asia" didn't just build an empire; he created a template for success that's as timeless as your vintage Birkin. Turn to page 46 to discover how one family's vision created a legacy more enduring than your grandmother's diamonds.

But hold onto your passport covers, because we're jetting off to Seoul, where ancient dynasties meet K-pop royalty in a delicious collision of old-world charm and new-world cool. From the majestic Gyeongbokgung Palace (darling, it's basically the Versailles of the East) to the pulsating HYBE headquarters, we're mapping out your next cultural conquest. Myeongdong by day is a beauty paradise that would make your facialist weep with joy, while by night it transforms into a gastronomic wonderland that puts your private chef to shame. And don't even get me started on the Namsan Seoul Tower views – they're more spectacular than the panorama from your penthouse. Flip to page 60 before your Instagram feed starts looking tragically last-season.

And speaking of spectacular shows, we're sailing into the Thailand International Boat Show 2025, where luxury met sustainability in a marriage more perfect than a flawless pearl. With Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra's opening address and a guest list that grew by 62%, this wasn't just any maritime soirée – it was the social event of the season. The show's 59 vessels gleamed like jewels in Phuket's Yacht Haven Marina crown, while the groundbreaking 36M Power Catamaran SpaceCat had everyone reaching for their platinum cards faster than you can say "wire transfer." From the sophisticated Churchill Cigar Lounge to the forward-thinking Thailand Yachting Conference, every moment sparkled brighter than the Andaman Sea at sunset. The estimated 1.4 billion baht economic impact proves that luxury and good business sense go together like champagne and caviar.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to call my travel concierge, book a yacht viewing, and practice my Seoul street food etiquette – all while keeping my Dom Pérignon at the perfect temperature, naturally. After all, darlings, excellence is in the details.

Fabulously yours,

Thailand’s New Luxury: Wellness, Culinary Tourism, and High-Equity Brands Take Center Stage at TTF 2025

Thailand Tourism Forum (TTF) 2025 unveils “JOMO” (Joy of Missing Out) as a defining concept, marking a shift in luxury travel trends and positioning Thailand as Asia’s emerging hub for wellbeing, gastronomy, and branded residences.

Thailand’s tourism experts convened at the InterContinental Bangkok for TTF 2025, the nation’s premier tourism event, to discuss how the evolving values of luxury travelers and the rise of high-equity brands are reshaping the industry. With over 1,000 delegates in attendance, the forum emphasized how Thailand can solidify its position as Asia’s luxury travel leader—by focusing on regenerative wellness, culinary tourism, and branded residences.

JOMO: The New Luxury Mindset

Central to the forum was the introduction of JOMO (Joy of Missing Out), a concept that reflects travelers’ desire to disconnect and prioritize personal, immersive experiences over social validation-driven “bucket list” travel. This shift away from FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) aligns with the global trend of selfcare, emphasizing unique, meaningful journeys.

“Luxury is no longer about exclusivity or excess—it’s about authenticity and connection,” said Bill Barnett, Managing Director of C9 Hotelworks and founder of TTF. “Wellness has evolved far beyond spas. It’s about embracing outdoor activities, longer stays, and a

focus on longevity.”

Wellness and Residences: The Pillars of New

Luxury

Wellness tourism in Thailand is booming, with the sector valued at THB 1.2 billion (USD 5.7 billion) annually. Meanwhile, branded residences are surging, generating THB 191 billion (USD 34.6 billion)—a testament to the growing appeal of lifestyle-driven investments. This dual focus is paving the way for Thailand’s transformation into a luxury tourism powerhouse. According to Jesper Palmqvist, STR’s regional VP for Asia Pacific, Bangkok’s luxury hotels along the Chao Phraya River are outperforming others, thanks to their nature-inspired locations and

HOT AROUND BANGKOK

culinary-focused neighborhoods, which resonate strongly with high-end travelers.

Culinary Tourism and Brand Evolution

Culinary tourism also emerged as a cornerstone of Thailand’s luxury appeal. Patrick Finn, VP of development at IHG Hotels & Resorts, highlighted that authentic and creative food and beverage experiences will dominate the luxury travel landscape in 2025. This aligns with IHG’s ongoing success in Thailand, exemplified by the award-winning InterContinental Khao Yai Resort and the growing popularity of its Kimpton brand.

Similarly, Siradej Donavanik, VP of development at Dusit Hotels & Resorts, underscored the importance of brand evolution in luxury hospitality. The

newly opened Dusit Thani Bangkok reflects the group’s pivot toward integrating modern lifestyle trends with traditional Thai charm.

Longevity: The Future of Wellness Tourism

Longevity-focused tourism is another major trend shaping Thailand’s luxury market. Innovative wellness facilities, such as the newly launched VitalLife Scientific Wellness Center in Phuket, are catering to travelers seeking to enhance their long-term health. Dr. Wanviput Sanphasitvong, of VitalLife and Bumrungrad International Hospital, described longevity as “the new frontier” of wellness tourism, redefining how visitors engage with health-focused travel.

A Collaborative Vision for the Future

TTF 2025 was organized by C9 Hotelworks in collaboration with leading industry partners, including IHG Hotels & Resorts, STR, Horwath HTL, JLL Hotels and Hospitality, QUO, AMCHAM Thailand, Delivering Asia, VitaLife, Lighthouse, Phuket Hotels Association, Thaiger, and the host venue, InterContinental Bangkok.

With its focus on wellbeing, culinary tourism, and high-equity branded investments, Thailand is poised to redefine luxury travel in Asia, offering visitors a deeply personal and transformative experience. As Barnett noted, “This is just the beginning of a new era for Thailand’s luxury tourism.”

Let’s Dine

INTO THE HEART OF BANGKOK'S NEW TEMPLE OF PRIME BEEF

Ascending to Wolfgang's Steakhouse in the gleaming One Bangkok complex, one discovers a portal to the gilded age of American steakhouse culture. Here, amid Thailand's most ambitious mixed-use development, this shrine to perfectly aged beef channels the sublime swagger of Manhattan's and Boston's legendary meat palaces.

The space unfolds like a vintage photograph come to life – streamlined mahogany panels and burnished bronze accents whisper tales of deals sealed and celebrations savored. Artfully calibrated lighting casts a honey-gold glow across white tablecloths while notes of classic jazz float through the air, creating an atmosphere that's both timeless and deeply contemporary.

But it's the primal perfume of USDA Prime beef, searing on blazing hot grills, that announces Wolfgang's true intention. That intoxicating aroma – mineral-rich, deeply caramelized – serves as an aromatic prelude to what promises to be a masterclass in the art of steak.

In the ever-evolving tapestry of global gastronomy, Wolfgang's Steakhouse's 40th outpost emerges as Bangkok's newest crown jewel of fine dining. This latest addition to Peter Zwiener's empire – a testament to his father Wolfgang's legacy – joins an illustrious roster spanning from Miami's sun-drenched shores to Beijing's dynamic metropolis. The restaurant's design philosophy, as Peter articulates, masterfully "blends timeless charm with a modern fine-dining experience," creating an environment where old-world steakhouse gravitas meets contemporary Asian sophistication.

Mr. Peter Zwiener (center), President and Co-Founder of Wolfgang’s Steakhouse, Mr. Prasert Laorphanpon and Mr. Sohei Urakami, (left-right) Co-partners of Wolfgang’s Steakhouse Thailand.

The Prelude: A Symphony of Starters

Our epicurean journey begins with Wolfgang's signature salad – a masterful composition where succulent king prawns dance with garden-fresh vegetables and smoky bacon, all embraced by crisp iceberg lettuce and dressed in a perfectly balanced vinaigrette. The dish serves as a bright overture to the evening's richer movements, its fresh, clean flavors preparing the palate for what's to come.

The crabcake follows – a study in textural contrast that showcases the kitchen's finesse with seafood. The exterior achieves that coveted golden crackle, giving way to sweet, delicate crabmeat within. A housemade tartar sauce provides bright, citrusy notes that elevate each bite, while a bed of pristine greens adds both color and context to the plate.

Then arrives the show-stopping bacon – a magnificent slice measuring a foot in length and thick as a nobleman's thumb. This is bacon reimagined as a luxury item, each bite delivering a primal satisfaction of crisp exterior yielding to succulent, smoky meat. The presentation alone commands attention, but it's the depth of flavor that leaves an indelible impression.

The Main Event: A Theater of Fire and Flesh

The arrival of the porterhouse for two is announced with a time-honored steakhouse tradition – a chorus of "Sizzling!" echoing through the dining room, creating a moment of theatrical anticipation. This USDA Prime cut, flown in and dryaged for 28 days in precisely controlled conditions, is a masterwork of butchery weighing in at one impressive kilogram. The meat, seasoned simply with coarse salt and cracked pepper, is seared at temperatures that would make Vulcan himself pause. The result is a study in contrasts: the butter-tender filet on one side, the robustly flavored strip on the other, both unified by a perfectly caramelized crust.

Accompanying this centerpiece are classic steakhouse sides elevated to their highest form – silken mashed potatoes and vibrant spinach, each providing perfect counterpoints to the rich beef. The moment calls for equally distinguished wine, and Wolfgang's 2,000-bottle cellar delivers with a Chilean Malbec whose dark fruit notes and subtle tannins complement the meat's robust character.

The lamb chops that follow showcase the kitchen's versatility – each cut precisely grilled to a rosy medium-rare, bearing the mark of flames while maintaining their succulent interior. The preparation demonstrates that Wolfgang's mastery extends beyond beef, treating each protein with equal reverence and technical precision.

The snowfish arrives as a welcomed interlude, its thick, pearly flesh bearing testimony to its deep-water origins. This Chilean sea bass, sourced from fish that can grow to impressive sizes, yields portions of remarkable thickness. The preparation honors the fish's natural buttery character, allowing it to shine with minimal intervention, while accompanying greens provide a fresh counterpoint to the rich flesh.

Sweet Finales: A Trilogy of Decadence

The dessert progression begins with a chocolate mousse that speaks to both sophistication and indulgence – a silken celebration of premium chocolate crowned with clouds of fresh whipped cream. The presentation, dusted with fine cocoa, demonstrates the kitchen's attention to detail extends well beyond the savory courses.

The apple strudel follows, its gossamer-thin pastry sheltering warm, spice-kissed fruit. The balance of cinnamon and nutmeg provides aromatic depth without overwhelming the natural sweetness of the apples, while the delicate pastry shatters satisfyingly with each forkful.

But it's the New York cheesecake that provides the evening's grand finale – dense yet impossibly creamy, supported by a buttery graham crust and adorned with fresh strawberries and more of that heavenly whipped cream. This is no mere dessert but rather a proper tribute to one of New York's most iconic contributions to the pastry world.

The Verdict

Wolfgang's Steakhouse transcends mere dining to become a comprehensive gastronomic experience. The service model – one dedicated team member for every three tables – ensures attention that's both precise and unobtrusive. The staff's deep knowledge of both the menu and the extensive wine list reflects serious investment in training, while their orchestrated movement through the packed dining room speaks to careful choreography.

As Bangkok's dining scene reaches new heights, Wolfgang's stands as a beacon of timeless steakhouse tradition executed with modern finesse. The restaurant has quickly established itself as a destination for both serious carnivores and those seeking a complete fine-dining experience, evidenced by the numerous tables sharing the signature porterhouse throughout the evening.

Practicalities: Evening service runs from 5:00 PM to 11:30 PM, with lunch service anticipated by January's end (11:30 AM to 1:30 PM). Given the restaurant's immediate popularity among Bangkok's discerning diners, advance reservations are not merely recommended but essential. The investment in both time and resources to secure a table, however, is handsomely rewarded with an evening of exceptional cuisine and service that honors both its New York roots and its Asian setting.

THE SUGAR KING'S LEGACY

How Asia's First Modern Conglomerate

Shaped Business History

In the bustling port city of Semarang in 1863, a young Chinese immigrant named Oei Tjie Sien could hardly have imagined that his modest trading firm would evolve into Asia's first modern conglomerate. Yet within a generation, his son would transform this small enterprise into an empire so vast that it would earn him the moniker "The Rockefeller of Asia."

The story of the Oei Tiong Ham Concern represents more than just another tale of business success – it embodies the spirit of innovation that transformed Southeast Asia from a colonial backwater into an economic powerhouse. At its heart stands Oei Tiong Ham himself, a visionary who dared to break with tradition by embracing Western business practices at a time

when most Asian enterprises remained rooted in centuries-old customs.

"The key to Tiong Ham's success wasn't just his business acumen," notes Dr. James Chen, a business historian at the National University of Singapore. "It was his willingness to modernize at a time when many of his contemporaries viewed Western methods with

suspicion." This forward-thinking approach would prove revolutionary, as Tiong Ham built an empire that would eventually control 60% of Java's sugar market and establish a global presence spanning three continents.

The numbers tell a compelling story: at his peak, Tiong Ham's personal wealth rivaled that of America's great-

est industrialists – the JP Morgans and Daniel Guggenheims of his era. But unlike many of his Western counterparts, Tiong Ham's vision extended far beyond a single industry. Under his leadership, the Oei Tiong Ham Concern diversified into banking, shipping, and real estate, creating a business model that would later be emulated by countless Asian conglomerates.

The empire's crown jewel emerged in an unexpected location: Thailand. Established in 1932 under the leadership of Dr. Hervey Oei, Oei Tiong Ham’s second son from his seventh wife, Kian Gwan Thailand weathered the tumultuous years following World War II, a period marked by rising nationalism that led to the dismantling of much of the original company. The firm faced nu-

merous challenges, including economic instability from the Great Depression and political uncertainty following Thailand’s transition to a constitutional monarchy in 1932. Nevertheless, the company demonstrated remarkable resilience, harnessing its innovative spirit to introduce groundbreaking products to the Thai market. Among its most significant achievements was the introduction of National Cash Register (NCR) office machines and General Motors automobiles, which became foundational elements of their business.

Starting with just 30 employees, the Thai operation grew to employ over 1,000 people by the 1960s, becoming a pioneer in multiple industries. Perhaps most remarkably, Kian Gwan Thailand helped shape the skyline of Bangkok itself. In the late 1960s, the company constructed the nation's first modern high-rise office tower – the 12-story Kian Gwan House on Wireless Road. This architectural achievement marked more than just a business milestone; it symbolized Thailand's emergence into the modern era.

The company added to its real estate holdings, developing two additional office buildings on Wireless Road and embarking on international projects. In a bold move that showcased its global ambitions, Kian Gwan Thailand restored the iconic Carreras cigarette factory in London's Camden district. Today, this art deco masterpiece, known as Greater London House, stands as a testament to the company's commitment to preserving historical legacy while embracing modern progress. The company’s foray into real estate also included the development of a commercial complex on St. John’s Street in London, further cementing its reputation as a forward-thinking and globally minded enterprise.

Dr. Hervey Oei won the European Championship at Circuit Zandvoort, Netherlands in 1951

Following the passing of Dr. Hervey Oei in 2016, Kian Gwan Thailand came under the management of Ronald Tanner, Oei Tiong Ham’s grandson, and his wife, Nunthinee Tanner. Together, they have upheld the values instilled by their forebears while steering the company toward a dynamic future. The company has expanded into cutting-edge sectors like IT services and telecommunications while maintaining its traditional strengths in automobile distribution and real estate development. Continuing its legacy of landmark developments, the company unveiled 140 Wireless in 2022: a soaring 22-story commercial tower that brought 40,000 square meters of premium office space to one of Bangkok's most coveted business addresses.

Kian Gwan's automobile assembly plant 1950s.

"What makes the Oei Tiong Ham story so relevant today," says Maria Santos, a professor of business at INSEAD, "is how it demonstrates the importance of adaptability in business. Here was a company that began by trading tea and silks yet had the vision to embrace everything from sugar production to high-tech services."

The legacy of the "Sugar King" lives on not just in the buildings that bear his company's name or in the businesses that grew from his vision, but in the example he set for future generations of Asian entrepreneurs. In an era when many Western observers dismissed Asian businesses as mere imitators, Oei Tiong Ham proved that innovation knows no geographical bounds.

Commemorating the opening of Kian Gwan Building by His Excellency Pote Sarasin, ex-acting Prime Minister of Thailand, May 1972.

As Asia continues its rise as a global economic powerhouse, the story of the Oei Tiong Ham Concern serves as a reminder that today's business titans stand on the shoulders of pioneers who dared to think differently. In the end, perhaps that is Oei Tiong Ham's greatest legacy – not just the empire he built, but the path he blazed for others to follow.

DISCOVERING SEOUL

WHERE K-POP DREAMS

MEET ANCIENT DYNASTIES

Let’s Go

The warm glow of sunset paints Seoul's skyscrapers in hues of gold and pink, while thousands of fans gather outside HYBE's headquarters, hoping to catch a glimpse of their favorite K-pop idols. This is modern Seoul – a city where ancient palace roofs share the skyline with sleek entertainment companies, and where traditional tea houses sit comfortably beside sidewalk cafes blasting the latest BTS hits. Welcome to South Korea's captivating capital, where the past doesn't just coexist with the present – it helps create the future.

A City That Never Stops

As one of the top two cities that are most popular with Thai’s and expats living in Thailand, we suggest you begin your Seoul journey in Myeongdong, where the pulse of modern Korea beats strongest. By day, beauty enthusiasts flood its cosmetics emporia, testing the latest K-beauty innovations that have revolutionized skincare routines worldwide. As night falls, the district transforms into a street food paradise. Here's an insider tip: follow the longest lines of locals – they'll lead you to the crispiest Hotteok (sweet filled pancakes) and most perfectly grilled Odeng (fish cakes).

Time-Travel Through Neighborhoods

Just a short subway ride away, Bukchon Hanok Village offers a dramatic change of pace. Walking these narrow alleyways lined with traditional Korean houses feels like stepping into a historical drama – and often, you are. Many Korean period pieces film here, and it's common to spot camera crews capturing the next big streaming series. Book a stay in one of the converted hanok guesthouses – there's nothing quite like waking up on a heated ondol floor as morning light filters through paper windows.

The Royal Treatment

Gyeongbokgung Palace isn't just another tourist stop – it's your window into the soul of Korean culture. Time your visit for the 11 AM changing of the guard ceremony, when guards in vibrant Joseon-era uniforms march through the main gate. The photo opportunities are endless, but the real magic happens in the late afternoon when the setting sun casts long shadows across the courtyard, and the palace seems to glow from within.

Seoul After Dark

When sunset approaches, join the crowds heading to Namsan Seoul Tower. Yes, it's touristy, but watching the city transform into a galaxy of lights while dining at N.Grill (the rotating restaurant at the top) is an unforgettable experience. Pro tip: skip the cable car lines and take the newly renovated hiking trail – it's a surprisingly peaceful 30-minute walk through pine forests, offering spectacular photo opportunities of the city below.

The K-Pop Revolution

No story about contemporary Seoul is complete without diving into its role as the epicenter of the Korean Wave (Hallyu). K-pop, or Korean pop music, has skyrocketed in popularity over the past two decades, evolving into a global phenomenon that transcends cultural and linguistic barriers. Its origins can be traced back to the early 1990s, when the genre began to take shape with the debut of groups like Seo Taiji and Boys, who blended Western musical styles with Korean lyrics and themes. This innovative approach laid the groundwork for what would become the Hallyu Wave, or Korean Wave, which refers to the growing global interest in South Korean culture, including music, television dramas, and fashion.

Today, K-pop boasts a massive following around the world, with over 90.4 billion on-demand audio and video streams recorded in just one year alone. The genre's appeal is particularly strong among younger audiences, driven by its catchy melodies, high-energy performances, and visually stunning music videos. Social media platforms like TikTok and YouTube have played a crucial role in amplifying K-pop's reach, allowing fans to engage with their favorite artists and discover new music effortlessly. Notably, groups such as BTS and BLACKPINK have become household names globally, breaking records and achieving unprecedented success on international charts.

Among the most recognized K-pop stars is Lisa from BLACKPINK, who has garnered immense popularity not only in South Korea but also internationally. As a Thai artist, her influence extends beyond borders, making her a symbol of K-pop's global appeal. Lisa's solo projects have further solidified her status as a leading figure in the industry, showcasing her talent as both a performer and a fashion icon. Other notable K-pop stars include Jungkook from BTS, known for his powerful vocals and captivating stage presence, as well as groups like TWICE and Stray Kids, who continue to push the boundaries of the genre.

The Gangnam district, made globally famous by Psy's viral hit, has become a pilgrimage site for K-pop enthusiasts. Visit the HYBE Insight museum, where interactive exhibits showcase the journey of groups like BTS and SEVENTEEN, or explore the SM Entertainment COEX Artium, where K-pop memorabilia and holographic concerts bring fans closer to their idols.

For the ultimate K-pop experience, time your visit around music shows like "M Countdown" at Mnet's studio. With luck and planning, you might witness a live recording – just be prepared to join enthusiastic fans who've mastered complex fan chants. The nearby Starfield COEX Mall's K-pop Square features a massive LED screen constantly streaming music videos, creating an impromptu dance party atmosphere at all hours

Feast Your Way Through History

Don't leave Seoul without visiting Gwangjang Market, Korea's oldest remaining market. Unlike tourist-oriented markets, this is where real Seoulites come to eat. Pull up a plastic stool at a bindaetteok (mung bean pancake) stall and watch as grandmothers who've been making the same dish for decades work their magic. The crispy-chewy texture and rich flavor will ruin you for all other pancakes. Don't miss the mayak gimbap (addictively good seaweed rice rolls) –they're small enough that you can try several varieties.

Modern Moments

End your trip at Dongdaemun Design Plaza, where Korea's future takes shape. This UFO-like structure, designed by Zaha Hadid, hosts everything from fashion shows to art installations. The late-night shopping in surrounding markets (open until 5 AM!) proves Seoul truly never sleeps. The rooftop garden, illuminated by LED roses at night, has become a favorite spot for both romantic evenings and Instagram photos.

When to Go

While cherry blossoms make spring (AprilMay) Instagram-worthy, autumn (September-October) is Seoul's best-kept secret. The weather is perfect for exploring, and the fall foliage at Bukhansan National Park creates a stunning backdrop for urban adventures. Winter brings magical snow scenes and the opportunity to ice skate at the City Hall Plaza rink, while summer offers exciting festivals and outdoor concerts in parks along the Han River.

Hidden Gems

Venture beyond the tourist trails to Ikseondong, a recently revitalized historical district where traditional hanok houses have been transformed into boutique cafes, craft workshops, and indie design stores. The narrow alleys here are less crowded than Bukchon, and the fusion of old and new feels organic rather than contrived.

For a taste of Seoul's creative spirit, explore the Hongdae area near Hongik University. Street performers entertain crowds well into the night, and underground clubs pulse with everything from K-pop dance parties to indie rock shows. The area's energy is infectious, and the abundance of quirky cafes (cat cafes, board game cafes, and even sheep cafes) makes it a perfect spot for people-watching.

Seoul isn't just a destination; it's a masterclass in harmonious contradictions. Where else can you meditate in a 14th-century temple, shop in the world's largest underground mall, and feast on royal court cuisine – all before attending a holographic K-pop concert?

This is a city that doesn't make you choose between old and new, traditional and modern. Instead, it invites you to embrace both, creating memories that span centuries in a single trip.

Whether you're a K-pop fan tracing your idols' footsteps, a food enthusiast exploring evolving culinary traditions, or a culture seeker wanting to understand how a society can honor its past while racing toward the future, Seoul promises an adventure that will exceed your expectations.

WAVES OF LUXURY THE THAILAND INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW 2025

From January 9-12, 2025, the azure waters of Phuket Yacht Haven Marina transformed into a vibrant canvas of maritime luxury as the Thailand International Boat Show (TIBS) unfolded—not merely an event, but a revolution in nautical excellence.

As the sun danced across gleaming hulls and international visitors mingled, TIBS 2025 emerged as a watershed moment for Southeast Asian marine tourism. The event wasn't just impressive—it was transformative. With 59 vessels, 42 exhibitors, and a remarkable 62% surge in attendance, the show transcended traditional maritime exhibitions.

Thai Prime Minister Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra's opening address symbolized more than a ceremonial gesture; it was a declaration of Thailand's maritime ambition. Each vessel represented a story of innovation, craftsmanship, and unbridled luxury, painting a vivid picture of the region's potential.

With a strong lineup of premium brands, the exhibitor section was a major draw. Among the standout companies was Primus Marine. “As a new dealer, we were happy that we were able to put on display 6 boats, which were the Aquila 32, Aquila 44, the Antares 11 Flybridge, GT32, Oceanis 40.1, and the Grand Trawler 62. Positioned at the end of the dock, overlooking the marina, many sailors appreciated seeing a sailboat brand represented and we have received the first enquiries for Excess catamarans, which we are newly appointed dealers for Thailand,” said Howard Prime, Director of Primus Marine.

Northrop & Johnson Asia Pacific turned heads with their presentation of the 36M Power Catamaran SpaceCat, which quickly became one of the show’s most talked-about vessels. The catamaran’s sleek design and spacious layout appealed to potential charter clients. “We’ve already received several charter requests following the show,” said Lies Sol, Charter Manager at Northrop & Johnson.

The technological innovations were particularly striking. Silent Yachts unveiled their latest solar-powered catamaran, the Silent 60, featuring revolutionary photovoltaic technology that promises zero-emission cruising. VDH Naval Architects showcased their groundbreaking hydrodynamic hull designs, reducing fuel consumption by an unprecedented 35% compared to traditional yacht configurations.

Economic projections painted an equally compelling picture. The Thai Marine Business Association reported that TIBS 2025 was positioned to generate an estimated 1.4 billion baht in direct and indirect economic impact. "This isn't just about boat sales," explained Dr. Somchai Rungruangsilp, the association's chief economist. "It's about creating an entire ecosystem of maritime innovation and tourism."

TIBS 2025 was brilliantly conceived as more than a boat show—it was a holistic lifestyle experience. The Churchill Cigar Lounge became a social nucleus where visitors watched skilled Thai artisans hand-rolling local tobacco, symbolizing a perfect fusion of traditional craftsmanship and modern sophistication.

The accompanying Thailand Yachting Conference added intellectual depth to the spectacle. Held on January 8, this preshow gathering drew over 150 industry professionals who engaged in critical dialogues about sustainability, workforce development, and regional collaboration.

Environmental consciousness resonated throughout the event. Dr. Chantinee Boonchai led compelling presentations on marine conservation, while panel discussions explored practical strategies for reducing the industry's ecological footprint. The Marine Ecology Foundation unveiled a groundbreaking marine habitat restoration project, promising to replant 50,000 square meters of coral reefs across Andaman coastlines.

Luxury brands found unprecedented synergy at the event. Brands like Hublot and Richard Mille created exclusive maritime-themed limited editions, while highend automotive manufacturers like Porsche Design explored maritime crossover markets. The collaborations suggested a growing convergence between luxury marine experiences and broader lifestyle markets.

Family-friendly elements ensured the show's universal appeal. Children's Day on January 11 featured face painting, entertainment, and the UWC Children Skiff Regatta, where young sailors demonstrated remarkable skills. This approach transformed the exhibition from a trade show into a community celebration.

Networking opportunities were abundant and organic. The VIP Lounge aboard the superyacht Lady Eileen II and the Exhibitors and Captain's Lounge on Free Bird facilitated connections that transcended traditional business interactions. Industry leaders, potential clients, and maritime enthusiasts converged against a backdrop of spectacular vessels and mesmerizing sunsets.

Regional collaboration emerged as a powerful narrative. Discussions around the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMTGT) initiative highlighted a new era of maritime cooperation—not just about individual national interests, but creating an interconnected, dynamic marine ecosystem.

Crew welfare received unprecedented attention. Georgia Allen from ISWAN introduced the YachtCrewHelp program, emphasizing that behind every magnificent vessel are human stories deserving recognition and support.

The diversity of exhibitors told a remarkable story of global maritime innovation. From established brands like Simpson Marine to emerging players like Primus Marine, the show represented a microcosm of the industry's dynamic evolution.

As the farewell party's final notes faded and golden rays painted the marina, one sentiment resonated deeply: The 2025 Thailand International Boat Show was more than an event. It was a vision of the future— where luxury meets responsibility, technology embraces tradition, and maritime excellence knows no boundaries.

David Hayes, Chairman of JAND Group, captured this spirit perfectly: "This isn't just about putting on a show—it's about creating a platform for real growth and collaboration."

For those who missed TIBS 2025, start planning for 2026. Something extraordinary is on the horizon.

Madame Kian Gwan

Nunthinee Tanner's Journey Through Business, Sport, And Culture

In the vibrant landscape of Thai business and culture, few figures embody the seamless fusion of tradition and innovation quite like Nunthinee Tanner. Known affectionately as "Madame Kian Gwan," she stands as a testament to the power of pursuing one's passions while honoring historical legacy. Alongside her husband Ronald Tanner—grandson of the legendary Oei Tiong Ham—she has emerged as a transformative force in Thailand's business and cultural spheres.

As Managing Director of LBG Limited, Tanner oversees a diverse portfolio of luxury brands including Burberry, Thalgo, and Valmont in Thailand. Her business acumen extends to managing Paris Spas and expanding the Metropolitan Museum of Art store to three locations. However, her most significant contribution to Bangkok's landscape is the visionary 140 Wireless project, a premium office building that represents a milestone in the Kian Gwan legacy.

The 140 Wireless building, designed by renowned Swiss architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron, stands as a testament to Tanner's ability to blend heritage with innovation. This modern cultural hub houses Thailand's first antique piano museum. Khun Nunthinee takes immense pride in the uniqueness of her collection. “Each one is over 100 to 200 years old,” she explains. “I had to bid on them, and the piano strings are still original. The proportions, shapes, natural wood grain, and intricate carvings on the piano legs, music stands, and other components reflect the craftsmanship of ancient artisans who created pianos as both musical instruments and exquisite furniture.”

Among the museum’s most prized pieces is a harpsichord from 1782, an instrument that predates the modern piano and holds an esteemed place in Baroque music history. Built by Burkat Shudi and Johannes Broadwood, the harpsichord is said to have been played by Mozart in Austria. Now 242 years old, it remains a testament to the enduring beauty and significance of these historical instruments.

Beyond her business achievements, Tanner has carved out a unique place in Thai sporting history as the country's first female polo player. Her passion for equestrian sports began at age 14, and she has since become an active promoter of polo in Thailand. Together with Harold Link, Chairman of the B Grimm group of companies, she co-founded the Thai Polo and Equestrian Club near Pattaya in 2005—a world-class facility spanning over 2,000 rai of meticulously landscaped grounds.

The club stands as Asia's largest multi-functional polo and equestrian operation, featuring three international-standard polo fields, two practice grounds, and stabling for over 200 horses. Its facilities include state-of-the-art veterinary and quarantine services, managed by an international team of professionals from Argentina, France, and Britain.

Tanner's commitment to giving back to society is evident in her various charitable initiatives. She co-founded the Queen's Cup Pink Polo Tournament, now in its sixteenth year, which raises funds for the Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer. Additionally, she helps organize the Asian Beach Polo Championship in Hua Hin, supporting the Kamlangjai Project—a rehabilitation program for female inmates and their children.

Her dedication to culture and heritage is perhaps most visible in the unique touches she brings to her projects. The "Chukka Bar" at the Thai Polo and Equestrian Club features the original bar and memorabilia from London's famous Langham Hotel polo lounge, which Tanner personally acquired and transported to Thailand. This attention to historical preservation mirrors her commitment to maintaining the legacy of Kian Gwan while pushing boundaries for future generations.

"Whatever I do, I start with what I love. If I enjoy it, I'll put my best effort into it," Tanner often says, embodying a philosophy that has guided her diverse achievements. Whether it's preserving historical instruments, promoting women in sports, or leading business innovations, her approach combines passionate dedication with purposeful action.

Together with her husband Ronald, Nunthinee Tanner continues to steward the Kian Gwan legacy while forging new paths in business, culture, and philanthropy. From the polo fields of Pattaya to the gleaming towers of Wireless Road, her influence has helped shape modern Thailand while honoring its rich heritage. Through her various endeavors, she demonstrates that innovation and tradition need not be at odds—they can instead create something greater than the sum of their parts.
