Editor’s Note
Darlings, clutch your passports tightly - this month's HOT takes you on quite the journey, and trust me, you'll want to be perfectly dressed for every moment of it.
First stop: Phnom Penh, that deliciously resilient Pearl of Asia where French colonial flair meets vibrant Asian energy with all the grace of a perfectly mixed martini. Just a hop, skip, and a one-hour flight from Bangkok (barely enough time to enjoy your champagne), Cambodia's capital is serving up a masterclass in reinvention. From sidewalk cafés that would make Parisians swoon to gleaming modern towers piercing the skyline, this Mekong River beauty demands your attention. And while the ghosts of history still whisper along its elegant boulevards, today's Phnom Penh pulses with an infectious optimism that's simply impossible to resist. Stow your suitcase and turn to page 58 to discover why this city should be next on your wanderlust wishlist - and yes, darlings, do pack those new resort pieces you've been saving for something special.
132-year winning streak, this isn't just sailing - it's high-stakes theater on water. The stories behind the "Auld Mug" are as rich as the billionaires who chase it, and twice as entertaining. Slip on your well-worn deck shoes (Sperry's darling, nothing else will do) and navigate to page 68 to see which nation recently pulled off a historical hat-trick that had the sailing world gasping and the champagne flowing.
Speaking of dramatic comebacks, let's talk about the America's Cup, shall we? Since 1851, this nautical drama has given us everything - technological marvels, courtroom battles, and enough intrigue to fill an ocean. It's the kind of sporting event where the après-sail champagne budget rivals some small nations' GDPs, and we absolutely live for it. From Ted Turner's swagger to Australia II's cheeky winged keel that broke America's
And because HOT readers deserve nothing but the finest views (we wouldn't dream of suggesting otherwise), we're whisking you to the crown jewel of Phnom Penh - the Rosewood. Perched like a luxury eagle's nest atop the Vattanac Capital Tower, this ultra-chic sanctuary proves that the sky isn't the limit - it's the starting point. Whether you're sipping sundowners while gazing at the Mekong, plotting your next power move in the heart of the business district, or simply luxuriating in the kind of service that anticipates your wishes before you do, this is elevated living (quite literally) at its finest. The Royal Palace may be nearby, but up here, everyone feels like royalty. Unpack those Louis Vuitton's and turn to page 94 to see why this is the card key you'll want to be flashing at your next power lunch.
That's just a taste of what we've packed into this month's issue, darlings. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to press my linen for my next adventure... These stories won't research themselves, after all.

A Conversation With Ayu Omar, Mrs. National World 2023
HM: Ayu Omar, you are from Malaysia. How long did you live there and what was it like growing up?
AO: I was born in Keramat, Kuala Lumpur. I was raised in a small family, and I can tell you about growing up in Malaysia. Malaysia is a culturally diverse country, with a blend of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and indigenous communities, each bringing its own traditions, languages, and festivals. Kids in Malaysia often grow up multilingual, speaking Malay and sometimes English along with other languages or dialects, depending on their family background.
Growing up there means experiencing a warm, tropical climate yearround, with lots of greenery, beaches, and cityscapes. The education system is rigorous, with a focus on sciences, math, and languages. Schooling might be a mix of national schools and international influences. Food plays a central role in social life—kids growing up enjoying a wide range of cuisines, like nasi lemak, roti canai, and laksa.
Malaysia's multicultural society also means that people celebrate many holidays, from Hari Raya and Chinese New Year to Deepavali and Christmas, making childhood festive and full of traditions."
HM: Can you tell us a happy childhood memory?
AO: I remember waking up early on a weekend in Malaysia, where the sun is just starting to warm up the day. It's one of those days when a whole family trip is planned—heading to a favorite beach.
The journey starts with breakfast at a bustling kopitiam (coffee shop). The smell of kaya toast, soft-boiled eggs, and kopi (coffee) fills the air. Every-
one's chatting, and there's laughter all around. Once at the beach, the day is all about exploring tidal pools, trying to catch small crabs, and splashing in the water. The salty sea air, the warm sun, and the laughter make everything feel endless and bright.
As the day winds down, there's a picnic with nasi lemak packed by someone in the family. It's a perfect mix of spicy, savory, and creamy flavors that taste even better by the sea. The day ends with a sleepy ride back, watching the sun set over palm trees, feeling that perfect mix of happiness and tiredness.
HM: What do you like about (Kuala Lumpur)? What are some of your favorite activities?
AO: Kuala Lumpur is a city that mixes the old and new, with towering skyscrapers alongside historic buildings, lively street markets, and tranquil green spaces. There's always something to do and a feeling of constant discovery. A few of my favorites include exploring street food, visiting the Batu Caves, wandering in Chinatown and Little India, I also like exploring art and culture at the National Gallery.
HM: Winning the Title Mrs. National World 2024 at the 2024 Mrs. National Universe Competition, what role do you think you can play in empowering women?
AO: Winning the title of Mrs. National World 2024 is an incredible honor and a powerful platform for inspiring and empowering women. Winning such a title is about embracing leadership and using it to help women recognize their own potential and power. It's a role where every action can create waves of positive change, uplifting women in unique and transformative ways.
While reigning I plan to advocate for women's education and career development, promote mental health and self-care, encourage confidence and self-worth, support women entrepreneurs, and raise awareness on social issues affecting women.
HM: In your opinion, what are the benefits of having empowered women in the organization?
AO: Empowered women in an organization are catalysts for a more dynamic, forward-thinking, and successful workplace. Their impact is felt across every level, helping the organization thrive in meaningful, sustainable ways.
Benefits of having empowered women within an organization include enhanced leadership and Innovation, increased diversity of thought, positive workplace culture, higher productivity and performance, improved reputation and social responsibility.
Organizations that actively empower women set an example for gender equality and social responsibility. This reputation attracts talent, customers, and partners who value diversity and equity, which can enhance the organization's credibility and impact.

HOT AROUND HUA HIN
Where Thai Spice Meets Australian Wine
Sometimes the best dining experiences come from unexpected pairings. At Hua Hin's InterContinental Hotel, Jaras Restaurant recently proved this point with a delightful evening that brought together classic Thai cuisine and Australian wines. Leading the charge was Peter Papanikitas of Stonefish Wines, whose warm personality and deep knowledge of winemaking had guests hanging on every word.
The evening kicked off with a clever twist - a smoky Thai herbal tea that cleared our palates and set the mood. Then came an opener that had everyone reaching for their phones: charcoal-grilled squid with house-made black garlic bread. (Trust us, it tastes even better than it sounds.)
What followed was a parade of dishes that showed off the kitchen's creativity.
A crispy whiting fish salad, bright with fresh vegetables and homemade peanut sauce, made friends with a glass of Stonefish's Platinum Brut Sparkling. The spicy-sour king crab soup that came next - a bowl of comfort with a kick - found its perfect match in a crisp Sauvignon Blanc.
The standout dish? Seared Hokkaido scallops sharing the plate with Thai rice noodles, the whole thing perfumed with kaffir lime and fresh herbs. But the real showstopper was the Mang Kanna Kai Kerm with caviar - think tender baby kale leaves wrapped around a luxurious mix of caviar, shallots, toasted coconut, cashews, and salted egg, all brought together by a tangy tamarind sauce.
For the main event, we were treated to impossibly tender smoked pork
cheek (paired beautifully with a Negro Cabernet Sauvignon) and grilled tiger prawns served alongside yellow Thai sticky rice in banana leaf. The kitchen team clearly knows their stuff.
Dessert brought the evening home with a clever twist on a Thai favorite - house-made Thai milk tea ice cream, which found an unexpected friend in Stonefish's Sparkling Pink Moscato.
Throughout the night, Peter shared stories from his winemaking journey that had us all feeling like we'd just attended a fascinating dinner party rather than a formal wine pairing event. His selections - ranging from Chardonnay to Rosé - proved that good wine knows no boundaries when it comes to complementing Thai cuisine.
A Decade of Hope: Rescue P.A.W.S. Builds Dream Sanctuary for Thailand's Strays
In the heart of Thailand, where golden temples meet azure shores, a remarkable organization has been quietly transforming the lives of thousands of abandoned and stray animals. Rescue P.A.W.S., a registered NGO operating since 2013, has emerged as a beacon of hope for Thailand's vulnerable animal population, combining compassionate care with innovative community education.
The numbers tell a compelling story: over 13,000 animals sterilized, more than 600 successful adoptions, and an impressive 50,000 vaccines and parasite treatments administered. But perhaps most striking is their commitment to sustainable change through education, having reached nearly 30,000 children
with their animal welfare programs.
What sets Rescue P.A.W.S. apart is their holistic approach to animal welfare. Their free sterilization program targets the root cause of animal homelessness, while their unique educational initiatives blend animal welfare teachings with English language instruction—a creative approach that benefits both local communities and their four-legged residents.
"Our mission goes beyond immediate rescue," the organization emphasizes. "We're creating lasting change through education, prevention, and comprehensive care." This philosophy has led to the development of their successful Catch, Neuter, Vaccinate, Release (CNVR)
program, which humanely manages stray populations while ensuring their health and well-being.
But now, after a decade of tireless work, Rescue P.A.W.S. faces its biggest challenge yet. Their current temple-based facility, which has served as their home for the past ten years, can no longer accommodate their growing needs. The temple authorities have requested their relocation, prompting an ambitious plan to build a purpose-built sanctuary that will secure their mission for generations to come.
The new facility, situated just a ten-minute drive from the beach, promises to be more than just a shelter. Plans include a comprehensive veterinary
HOT AROUND HUA
clinic, specialized kennels for both adoptable and recovering animals, and improved spaces for their educational programs. The location strikes a perfect balance—close enough to serve the community yet sufficiently removed to provide a peaceful sanctuary for their residents.
The vision is impressive: a sanctuary-like environment that moves away from traditional shelter atmospheres, featuring dedicated spaces for rehabilitation, adoption, and community outreach. A small pond on the property offers potential as a water reservoir, while the proximity to the beach ensures their beloved tradition of daily dog walks can continue uninterrupted.
The impact of this new facility will be transformative. Rescue P.A.W.S.
projects that in 2025 alone, they will be able to perform over 7,000 sterilizations, provide 11,000 vaccinations, and administer nearly 20,000 parasite treatments—nearly doubling their current capacity.
However, turning this vision into reality requires substantial support. The project's total cost stands at 10,110,000 Thai Baht (approximately $280,640 USD). This includes essential components such as a modern clinic facility (6.9 million THB), sustainable solar power systems (300,000 THB), and specialized kennels for both adoptable and recovering dogs (2 million THB combined).
As they race against time to complete their relocation by March 2025, Rescue P.A.W.S. is reaching out to the global
community for support. This new facility isn't just about building structures— it's about creating a foundation for decades of continued service to Thailand's vulnerable animal population.
For those looking to make a lasting impact on animal welfare in Thailand, supporting Rescue P.A.W.S.' new facility project offers a unique opportunity to be part of a legacy that will transform countless lives for generations to come.

East Meets West: A Culinary Masterpiece at Azure
In an enchanting fusion of culinary mastery, the Intercontinental Hua Hin Resort's beachfront Azure Restaurant transformed into a gastronomic theater on October 25th. The evening's protagonists—Michelin-starred virtuoso Chef Takatomo Izumi of Kyoto and Australia's luminary Chef Dayan Hartill-Law—orchestrated a ten-course opus that married Japanese precision with Australian panache.
The oceanic prelude commenced with Ise-ebe spiny lobster, its delicate flesh kissed by heat and harmonized with fermented beetroot's earthy notes. A quail consommé, elevated by indigenous Kakadu plum and mysterious black chuwanmushi, followed—a composition that whispered of both forest and sea. The overture concluded with
nodoguro sashimi, its pristine flesh seared to perfection.
The evening's crescendo built through a carefully curated progression: wild duck dancing with sweet Hokkaido scallops, raw tuna finding its soulmate in grilled shiitake, and an Iberian pork sandwich offering a sophisticated nod to comfort cuisine. Grilled unagi provided deep, smoky notes before the grand finale—a San Chiku wagyu fillet (MBS 9+ marbling), crowned with truffle hollandaise and foie gras that drew appreciative sighs from the assembled guests as the grilled meat melted on the tongue.
Dessert arrived in the form of N25 caviar smoked with paperbark, extra virgin olive oil & smoked sea salt that
was paired with silken local vanilla soft serve, a clever juxtaposition of Japanese tradition and modern simplicity.
The liquid accompaniment proved equally impressive, with Margaret River's Stonefish presenting both a buttery Chardonnay and a graceful Rosé, while Yarra Valley contributed a velvet-smooth Pinot Noir. Thailand's own Monsoon Valley added local sophistication with their Colombard, Brut sparkling, and playful Don Brusco sparkling red.
As the balmy beach breeze carried away the last notes of this gastronomic concert, it was clear that Azure had hosted not merely a dinner, but an elevation in Hua Hin's culinary scene.

THE GULF'S GREATEST TABLE
Big Fish & Bar,
Hua Hin Marriott Resort
Where the Gulf of Thailand meets culinary artistry, Big Fish & Bar at the Hua Hin Marriott Resort & Spa transforms seaside dining into an enchanted evening. As the sun dips toward the horizon, casting golden light across azure waters, this coastal sanctuary presents a tasting journey that marries the bounty of local waters with global sophistication.
From Irish oysters dressed in salmon caviar to spice-forward Thai squid, Executive Chef Sabri Kocoglu's menu reads like a love letter to both land and sea—though you might be too distracted by the gentle waves lapping at golden sand to notice at first. But tear your eyes away from that postcard-perfect view; the real magic happens on the plate.
The Chef’s Amuse-bouche for this evening’s dining event was an Irish Oysters over a bed of Sea Vegetables topped with Salmon Caviar. What a delight. The plump oyster offered a clean briny taste, beautifully enhanced by the sea vegetables. Crowning this exquisite presentation was a delicate layer of Salmon Caviar, which contributed an added layer of complexity. The mild sauces brought together a palate pleasing flavor, while not overpouring the essence flavor of the oyster.
Our first appetizer for the evening was Tasmanian Salmon Aguachile. This dish captures the flavors of seafood, but with a twist. The perfectly cured salmon sits on top of a zesty lime and chili sauce. The zesty acidity of the lime combines with the subtle heat of the chili without overwhelming the taste. The salmon is plated beautifully with fresh cilantro and thinly sliced red onion, and red chilis. This proved to be a wonderful, warm weather concoction, which is a visually appealing dish topped with edible flowers.
We were next served a Burrata with Cherry Tomatoes, and Strawberries, topped with a zesty Strawberry Vinaigrette. This exquisite burrata features a crisp shell, which when cut yields a creamy interior, oozing out. This combined with the strawberry vinaigrette was such a surprise where multiple flavors were evident. The cherry tomatoes and strawberries added not just another set of favors, but visually enhance the dish.
Our final appetizer was the Duck Foie Gras, served with Fresh Hua Hin Figs and crushed pistachios. This dish is a captivating culinary experience, that balances richness and freshness exquisitely. The foie gras is perfectly seared creating a velvety texture which melts in the mouth. The sumptuous flavor is wonderfully enhanced by the sweetness of Hua Hin figs. The finishing touch of crushed pistachios delivers a delightful crunch that contrasts with the smoothness of the duck liver. The chef demonstrated a masterful understanding of flavor pairing and presentation. This dish celebrates fine dining where every element leads to perfection.
The kitchen's deft hand with seafood shines brightest in their Atlantic monkfish interpretation, a study in textural contrast and restrained elegance. The meaty fillet, often called "poor man's lobster," proves itself worthy of fine dining status here, its pearly flesh yielding to the fork with just the right resistance. A gossamer white wine sauce clings to each bite, while woodland mushrooms provide an earthy bass note to the fish's subtle sweetness. Spring makes a cameo in the form of sweet peas and their snappier pod cousins, offering verdant crunch against the silky sauce. A whisper-thin slice of crackling bacon crowns the dish—its smoky presence more like a gentle suggestion than a statement. This is the kind of plate that reminds you why monkfish has graduated from fishermen's catch to chef's darling.
In a choreography as precise as the kitchen's plating, Big Fish & Bar's service brigade executes their roles with the kind of polished expertise that transforms dining into theater. Each of the four servers arrives at precisely the right moment, armed with encyclopedic knowledge of their dishes that turns mere explanation into storytelling. They field questions about preparation techniques and ingredient sourcing with the easy confidence of culinary insiders, while our hostess orchestrates the evening with the perfect balance of attention and restraint. It's this human element, this seamless marriage of knowledge and hospitality, that elevates an exemplary meal into an unforgettable experience.
The kitchen pivots from global refinement to local mastery with their Pla Muek Pad Kee Mao—a dish that reminds us we're dining mere steps from the Gulf of Thailand. This "drunken" squid stir-fry is street food elevated to fine dining status, without losing its soul in translation. Rings of local squid, caught in nearby waters, maintain that perfect sweet spot between tender and chewy, while swimming in an intoxicating sauce that builds like a crescendo. Fresh Thai basil, birds-eye chilies, and aromatic herbs create layers of heat that flirt with intensity without crossing into overwhelming territory. Served alongside perfumed jasmine rice that seems to pearl in the evening light, this dish is a testament to why Thai cuisine has captivated global palates—it's a masterclass in balance, where heat and herb, sweet and savor perform an intricate dance on the tongue. In the hands of Big Fish & Bar's kitchen, this harbor-town classic becomes both a tribute to tradition and a statement of culinary ambition.
In an ambitious crescendo of luxury meets craft, the kitchen presented its pièce de résistance: Japanese F1 Wagyu striploin that reads like a love letter to umami. The meat arrives wearing a perfectly calibrated char, its surface crackling with promise before giving way to flesh so tender it practically dissolves on the tongue. This is Wagyu in its finest form, where legendary marbling transforms each bite into a buttery revelation. A supporting cast of earthbound ingredients—earthy beets crumbled like ruby dust, whisper-thin shallots, and woodland mushrooms—creates a grounding counterpoint to the meat's richness. Black garlic adds mysterious depth, while celeriac lends its subtle sweetness to the composition. The finale arrives in waves of truffle-infused gravy, a sauce that doesn't so much dress the dish as unite it in singular purpose: pure, unadulterated pleasure. It's a plate that reminds us why Wagyu maintains its mythical status in the culinary world—and why some luxuries are worth every penny.
Just when you think the kitchen has played its final card, dessert arrives as a spectacular triple finale. First, Textures of Chocolate demonstrates why sometimes the classics need no reinvention—just masterful execution. Belgian chocolate in various incarnations creates a deep, dark symphony, while Madagascar vanilla ice cream provides a creamy interlude between chocolate movements. Crushed pistachios add percussion, their satisfying crunch cutting through the velvet richness with nutty bravado.
Next, the follow-up act that truly captures the essence of coastal Thailand: Tres Leches arrives studded with local mangoes and berries, while coconut ice cream melts languidly into a bed of toasted granola.
And finally, A Passion Fruit Vanilla Cheesecake that reads like a love letter to the tropics. Here, New York steakhouse tradition meets Southeast Asian flair, with passion fruit's bright acidity dancing against the cheesecake's rich canvas. In the gentle evening breeze rolling in from the Gulf, these sweet endings feel less like dessert and more like a perfectly orchestrated curtain call.
At Big Fish & Bar, the Gulf of Thailand stretches endlessly beyond floor-to-ceiling windows in air-conditioned comfort. The real achievement isn't just in what's on the plate—though from that first briny oyster to the final bite of tropical cheesecake, the execution is nearly flawless. What Chef Kocoglu and his team have built is a restaurant that understands its surroundings. The menu draws confidently from global influences while celebrating its Thai coastal location, creating an experience that feels both worldly and grounded.
A thoughtful note for the savvy traveler: Marriott Bonvoy members can savor these culinary masterworks with a 10% reduction on both food and beverages from the à la carte menu—though given the caliber of the experience, you'd be forgiven for considering membership for this perk alone.
With service that strikes the perfect balance between polished and warm, and dishes that deliver on both technique and flavor, Big Fish & Bar stands out. This restaurant proves that great establishments don't need to choose between being ambitious and authentic—they can be both.

PHNOM PENH
Cambodia's Resilient Capital Where Past Meets Present
Phnom Penh, Cambodia's capital city straddling the mighty Mekong River, presents a fascinating blend of historical grandeur, cultural resilience, and emerging modernity that captivates visitors from their first moments in the city.
The Mekong River serves as both the lifeblood and soul of Phnom Penh, where it meets the Tonlé Sap and Bassac rivers in a natural phenomenon locals call 'Chaktomuk' or 'Four Faces.' This convergence has historically shaped the city's strategic importance as a trading hub and continues to define its modern identity. The river's banks host the vibrant Sisowath Quay, a bustling 3-kilometer promenade where locals gather at dawn for exercise and return at dusk for the night markets and outdoor dining. For centuries, the Mekong has sustained the city's fishing industry and agricultural fertility through its annual flood cycle, depositing rich silt across the surrounding plains. Today, while traditional fishing boats still dot the waters, the river also supports a growing tourist industry of sunset cruises and floating restaurants. However, the Mekong faces mounting challenges from upstream dam construction and climate change, making its preservation crucial not just for Phnom Penh's economy but for the cultural heritage it represents. The river remains an essential transportation artery, connecting the capital to Vietnam's delta region and providing a vital commercial route for Cambodia's growing economy.
Once known as the "Pearl of Asia" during French colonial rule (1863-1953), Phnom Penh retains much of its French influence in its wide boulevards, sidewalk cafés, and elegant architecture. The city's character was forever changed during the brutal Khmer Rouge regime (1975-1979), but has since emerged as a vibrant metropolis that honors its past while embracing the future.
Essential Attractions
Royal Palace Complex
The crown jewel of Phnom Penh, the Royal Palace complex, with its classic Khmer roofs and ornate gilding, remains the official residence of King Norodom Sihamoni. The adjacent Silver Pagoda, named for its floor of 5,000 silver tiles, houses national treasures including a life-sized gold Buddha adorned with 9,584 diamonds. Visit early morning to avoid the heat and crowds.
National Museum
Just north of the Royal Palace, this terracotta-colored building is a magnificent example of traditional Khmer architecture. Housing the world's finest collection of Khmer sculptures, the museum provides crucial context for understanding Cambodia's artistic heritage. The peaceful courtyard, filled with frangipani trees, offers a serene
respite from the city's bustle.
Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S-21)
While sobering, this former high school turned prison stands as an essential testament to Cambodia's tragic history. The preserved cells, photographs, and displays provide crucial insights into the Khmer Rouge period. Visiting with a guide is recommended for deeper understanding of this difficult but important chapter in Cambodian history.
Central Market (Phsar
Thmei)
The distinctive art deco dome of Central Market, built in 1937, houses a labyrinth of vendors selling everything from fresh produce to precious stones. The building's innovative design allows natural ventilation, making it surprisingly cool even in midday heat. The surrounding streets buzz with local life and street food vendors.
Wat Phnom
Situated on the only hill in central Phnom Penh, this 14th-century temple marks the legendary founding site of the city. Local worshippers frequently visit to make offerings, while the surrounding park provides a green escape from urban life. The temple is particularly atmospheric during Buddhist festivals.
French Legacy
The French influence extends beyond architecture into daily life. Crispy baguettes are as common as rice noodles for breakfast, and the aroma of coffee wafts from countless cafés. The Post Office Building and the old Mansion House (now FCC) exemplify the graceful colonial architecture that earned Phnom Penh its former "Pearl of Asia" nickname.
Culinary Excellence
Kravanh Restaurant
Housed in a restored French villa, Kravanh showcases royal Khmer cuisine. The Fish Amok, steamed in banana leaves with coconut curry, represents the pinnacle of Cambodian flavors. Their Prahok Ktiss, a dip made from fermented fish paste with pork and coconut milk, offers an authentic taste of traditional Khmer cooking.
Malis Restaurant
Chef Luu Meng's flagship restaurant elevates traditional Cambodian dishes to fine dining status. The restaurant's Kampot Pepper Crab and Grilled Eggplant with Minced Pork demonstrate how traditional recipes can be reimagined while respecting their essence. The colonial-era villa setting adds to the sophisticated dining experience.
The Foreign Correspondents' Club (FCC)
Perched in a colonial-era building on Sisowath Quay, The Foreign Correspondents' Club stands as a living testament to Cambodia's turbulent past and its journey to the present. Originally estab-
lished in 1993 during the United Nations peacekeeping mission, the FCC became the legendary watering hole for international journalists covering Southeast Asia's conflicts, particularly during the final chapters of the Khmer Rouge era. The three-story French colonial building, with its slowly turning ceiling fans, rattan furniture, and wraparound balcony offering spectacular views of the Mekong River, encapsulates the romantic era of foreign correspondence in Indochina. Despite its name, the FCC was never an actual correspondents' club, but rather a bar, restaurant, and hotel that served as an unofficial headquarters for war correspondents, diplomats, and aid workers. Today, while the days of journalists filing stories about regional conflicts are largely gone, the FCC remains a popular destination for both tourists and expatriates, serving as a sophisticated venue for sundowners and Western-Asian fusion cuisine. The walls, adorned with black-and-white photographs documenting Cambodia's recent history, tell silent stories of the country's past while guests enjoy the cool river breezes from the same balconies where reporters once watched history unfold.
Getting There
Flying to Phnom Penh from Thailand has never been easier. Multiple daily flights connect Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport with Phnom Penh International Airport, with average flight times of one hour. Budget carriers like AirAsia and Thai Smile offer competitive fares, while full-service carriers like Bangkok Airways provide business class options.
The recently modernized Phnom Penh International Airport is a mere 10 kilometers from the city center. Pre-arranged hotel transfers are recommended, though authorized taxis with metered fares are readily available at the arrival terminal.
Practical Considerations
The best time to visit is between November and February when temperatures are milder, and rainfall is minimal. The city is relatively compact, making it easy to explore major sites within a few days. Tuk-tuks remain the most practical way to navigate the city, with rides between major attractions typically costing $2-3.
US dollars are widely accepted and preferred for larger purchases, though small denominations of Cambodian riel are useful for local markets and tuk-tuk rides. Many upscale hotels and restaurants accept credit cards, but cash is king in markets and local establishments.
The transformation of Phnom Penh from a city of tragedy to one of Southeast Asia's most intriguing capitals offers visitors a unique window into Cambodia's past and present. While the shadows of history remain, they're balanced by the warmth of its people, the richness of its culture, and an optimistic energy that powers its renaissance. Whether spending a few days en route to Siem Reap's temples or settling in for a longer stay, Phnom Penh rewards visitors with experiences that resonate long after departure.

SAILING INTO HISTORY
New Zealand's Triumphant Victory at the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup In Barcelona
The America's Cup stands as sailing's most coveted prize, its history as deep and compelling as the waters it's raced upon. Born in 1851 when the schooner America crossed the Atlantic to humble Britain's finest vessels around the Isle of Wight, this magnificent competition has evolved from a gentlemen's challenge into the pinnacle of sailing technology and human ambition. The original trophy, a sterling silver punch bowl crafted by London jeweler Robert Garrard, became known as the "Auld Mug" and sparked a 132-year period of American dominance through the New York Yacht Club—the longest winning streak in sporting history.
The contest has witnessed countless dramatic moments that have captured the world's imagination: from Ted Turner's bold tactics in 1977 aboard Courageous, to Australia II's revolutionary winged keel in 1983 that finally broke America's iron grip on the trophy. The 1988 edition sparked particular controversy when
New Zealand challenged with a massive 90-foot monohull, only to be met by Stars & Stripes' radical catamaran defense—a David versus Goliath battle that ended in the courtroom as much as on the water.
Through the decades, the America's Cup has transformed from wooden schooners to sleek monohulls, and now to foiling catamarans that literally fly above the waves at breathtaking speeds exceeding 50 knots, while still maintaining its status as the ultimate test of sailing prowess, technological innovation, and national pride.
The 37th edition of this prestigious event concluded on October 19, 2024, in Barcelona, where the Kiwis triumphed over INEOS Britannia with a decisive 7-2 victory. This victory not only reinforces New Zealand's dominance in the sport but also marks a historic achievement as they become the first team to win three consecutive America’s Cups.
A Historic Victory
The final race was a culmination of intense competition and strategic prowess. Emirates Team New Zealand, helmed by Peter Burling and Nathan Outteridge, showcased their exceptional skills throughout the series. Despite facing challenges from INEOS Britannia, led by British sailing legend Ben Ainslie, the Kiwis maintained their composure and executed their strategies flawlessly. The final race was particularly thrilling, characterized by a closely contested start and tactical maneuvers that kept spectators on the edge of their seats.
In calm conditions on the day of the final race, Emirates Team New Zealand managed to secure victory with a margin of 37 seconds, sealing their win with four races to spare. This performance not only solidified their status as champions but also underscored their ability to thrive under pressure. Ainslie and his team were left disappointed, unable to mount a significant challenge despite showing moments of brilliance throughout the regatta.
The Legacy of the America's Cup
Over the years, various nations have vied for supremacy, but New Zealand has emerged as a dominant force in recent editions. With this latest victory, New Zealand has now claimed the America’s Cup five times in total. Their previous wins came in 1995, 2000, 2017, and 2021. The ongoing quest for Britain to secure its first win continues; despite Ainslie's previous success with Team USA in 2013, his current team remains without a title after this latest defeat.
The Road to Victory
The path to this year’s triumph was not without its challenges. Emirates Team New Zealand began the regatta with an impressive lead of 4-0 before INEOS Britannia fought back to narrow the gap to 4-2. However, the Kiwis responded with resilience, winning the last three races decisively to close out the competition.
The team’s performance was marked by exceptional teamwork and strategic decision-making. Each race saw them adapt quickly to changing conditions and capitalize on any mistakes made by their rivals. Their winning margins throughout the series were significant: 41 seconds, 27 seconds, and even over a minute in some races.
The Spectacle of Barcelona
Barcelona served as an idyllic setting for this year’s America’s Cup, with its stunning waterfront providing a picturesque backdrop for both competitors and spectators alike. Thousands flocked to Port Vell to witness the excitement firsthand, creating an electric atmosphere that celebrated sailing culture.
The race village buzzed with activity as fans enjoyed food stalls, entertainment, and opportunities to engage with sailing legends. The event not only showcased top-tier yacht racing but also highlighted Barcelona's vibrant spirit and hospitality.
Reflections on Achievement
After securing victory, Peter Burling expressed his gratitude towards his team and acknowledged the fierce competition posed by INEOS Britannia. “It’s a pretty surreal feeling,” he remarked post-race. “It’s been a tough battle all week... we are incredibly proud of how we performed today.” His sentiments were echoed by other team members who celebrated not just their victory but also the camaraderie and hard work that brought them success.
Ben Ainslie graciously congratulated his rivals, acknowledging their skill and dominance throughout the series. “Firstly, a huge well done to Team New Zealand,” he said. “In my view they are the best team ever in the America’s Cup.” His words reflect both respect for their competitors and determination for future challenges.
Looking Ahead
As Emirates Team New Zealand prepares for future competitions, they will continue to build on their legacy while setting new benchmarks for excellence in sailing. The next America’s Cup will allow them to choose both location and rules, further solidifying their advantage as defenders.
For INEOS Britannia and other challengers, this defeat serves as motivation for improvement and innovation as they strategize for future regattas. With Ainslie at the helm, there is no doubt that they will return stronger and more determined than ever.
In conclusion, the 2024 America’s Cup has not only reaffirmed New Zealand's status as a powerhouse in sailing but also provided thrilling moments that will be remembered for years to come. As fans reflect on this year’s competition, anticipation builds for what lies ahead in this storied tradition of maritime excellence.

A SYMPHONY OF LUXURY AND NATURE
Sansara Hua Hin's
New Phase Unveiled
In the heart of Thailand's royal resort town, Hua Hin, a new chapter of high-end living is being written. Sansara Hua Hin, already a beacon of sophisticated coastal life, is elevating its offerings with an exciting new phase that promises to redefine contemporary upscale living in this sought-after destination.
Tucked within the prestigious Black Mountain community, Sansara's latest development is a testament to thoughtful design and harmonious living. As you approach the property, the first thing that strikes you is the seamless integration of modern architecture with the lush, tropical landscape. It's as if the villas have grown organically from the earth, their clean lines and expansive windows framing breathtaking views of the internationally acclaimed Black Mountain Golf Course and the majestic mountains beyond.
The mastermind behind this architectural marvel is none other than The Beaumont Partnership, a multi-award-winning design studio known for its innovative approach to opulent spaces. Their vision for Sansara's new phase is clear: to create an exclusive enclave where comfort, convenience, and natural beauty coalesce into what they term "intelligent luxury."
As you step into one of the meticulously designed villas, you're immediately enveloped by a sense of tranquility. The interiors are a study in understated elegance, with high ceilings and open-plan living areas that blur the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces. Floor-to-ceiling windows invite the verdant landscape in, creating a living canvas that changes with the light and seasons.
The new phase offers two distinct villa types, each crafted to cater to different lifestyle needs while maintaining a cohesive aesthetic that complements the surrounding environment. Villa Type A, the largest of the offerings, boasts a generous total area of 549 square meters spread across two floors. The ground floor is a celebration of communal living, featuring a spacious living and dining area that opens onto an expansive terrace and a 12-meter-long swimming pool – the perfect setting for al fresco entertaining or quiet moments of reflection.
The kitchen in Villa Type A is a gourmand's dream, equipped with state-ofthe-art appliances and ample counter space, ideal for those who love to cook or entertain. A family room provides a cozy retreat for casual gatherings, while a ground floor bedroom offers convenience for guests or those who prefer single-level living.
Ascending to the second floor, you'll find the private quarters – a haven of peace and high-end living. The master suite is particularly impressive, with its walk-in closet and a sumptuous bathroom that rivals those found in five-star resorts. Three additional bedrooms, each with its own en-suite bathroom, ensure that family members or guests have their own private retreats. A dedicated working room acknowledges the growing trend of remote work, providing a professional space without compromising on the home's serene atmosphere.
Villa Type B, while slightly more compact, loses none of the sophistication. With a total area of 614 square meters, it offers an additional bedroom on the upper floor, bringing the total to five. The layout is thoughtfully designed to maximize both privacy and interaction, with a kid's playroom adding a touch of whimsy and practicality for families.
What sets Sansara apart is not just the impeccable design of its villas, but the flexibility it offers to prospective buyers. Each plot is sold with a freehold title, with leasehold options available for nonThai nationals – a crucial consideration for international buyers looking to invest in Thai real estate. Furthermore, while Sansara provides architectural design options, buyers have the freedom to customize these concepts to suit their individual needs and preferences. This bespoke approach ensures that each villa is not just a house, but a true home that reflects the unique tastes and lifestyles of its owners.
In this latest phase, Sansara introduces an enlightened approach to construction, empowering buyers with choice and control. Whether working with their preferred builder or collaborating with one of Sansara's recommended construction partners, property owners enjoy complete freedom in their selection. To preserve the estate's prestigious aesthetic standards, all construction drawings undergo a thorough review process prior to development commencing. This attention to detail ensures that Sansara remains a cohesive and visually stunning enclave, where each home complements its neighbors and the natural surroundings.
Beyond the confines of the individual villas, Sansara offers a lifestyle that is both active and leisurely. The proximity to Black Mountain Golf Course is a golfer's dream, providing easy access to world-class fairways and greens. For those who prefer other forms of recreation, the surrounding area offers a wealth of options, from pristine beaches to cultural excursions in Hua Hin's charming town center.
As the sun sets over the mountains, casting a golden glow across the landscape, one can truly appreciate the vision behind Sansara's new phase. It's not just about upscale living; it's about creating a sanctuary where life's pleasures – both grand and small – can be savored in an environment of unparalleled beauty and tranquility.
The developers, BuilderSmart PCL, have clearly poured their expertise and passion into every aspect of this project. From the thoughtful layout of each villa to the overarching concept of a community in harmony with nature, Sansara represents the pinnacle of opulent real estate in Hua Hin.
For those seeking a home that offers more than just bricks and mortar – a place that nurtures the soul, inspires the mind, and rejuvenates the body –Sansara's new phase presents an unparalleled opportunity. It's a chance to be part of a community that values privacy and exclusivity, without sacrificing connection to the wider world.
As Hua Hin continues to grow in popularity among discerning travelers and expatriates, developments like Sansara set a new standard for what high-end living can be in this tropical paradise. With its blend of contemporary design, natural beauty, and thoughtful amenities, Sansara isn't just offering homes – it's offering a lifestyle that many will aspire to, but few will attain.

Culinary Excellence at New Heights
Rosewood Phnom Penh's diverse culinary landscape spans multiple venues, each offering distinct experiences that cater to discerning palates. At the heart of the hotel's gastronomic offerings lies an impressive collection of restaurants and bars that showcase both international excellence and local flavors.
Brasserie Louis, perched on the 35th floor, remains the hotel's signature dining venue. Here, classic French cuisine harmoniously coexists with authentic Cambodian dishes. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the confluence of the Mekong, Tonlé Sap, and Bassac rivers, creating an atmospheric backdrop for dishes like Beef Cheek Bourguignon and Fish Amok, a traditional Khmer curry.
Zhan Liang stands as a testament to Chinese culinary artistry, offering an elevated dining experience that celebrates regional Chinese cuisines. The restaurant's sophisticated interiors, featuring dark woods and traditional motifs, set the stage for masterfully prepared dishes. The dim sum selection, available daily, has become a weekend institution among Phnom Penh's elite.
Cuts, with its art deco-inspired design, has established itself as the capital's premier steakhouse. The restaurant sources exceptional cuts from renowned producers worldwide, including Wagyu from Japan's Miyazaki Prefecture and Black Angus from Australia's Rangers Valley. The walk-in wine cellar houses over 1,500 labels, with sommeliers ready to suggest perfect pairings.
The Whiskey Library offers an intimate sanctuary for spirits enthusiasts, housing one of Southeast Asia's most impressive collections of rare and limited-edition whiskies. The leather-clad space features over 200 labels of single malts, blends, and bourbons. Regular tasting events and masterclasses hosted by international experts have made it a destination for whiskey aficionados. The venue's private lockers allow members to store their personal bottles, creating an exclusive club atmosphere.
Butterfly Patisserie elevates the art of dessert to new heights. This elegant boutique combines the precision of French pastry-making with creative Asian influences. Master Pastry Chef Vincent Claudepierre crafts exquisite creations that are as visually stunning as they are delicious. The signature butterfly-shaped chocolates, made with single-origin cacao, have become sought-after gifts.
Sora, commanding the 37th floor, has revolutionized Phnom Penh's nightlife scene. This sky bar blends sophisticated mixology with Japanese izakaya-style dining. The curved space offers 360-degree views of the city, with different areas dedicated to various experiences – from the high-energy main bar to intimate lounging spaces. The bar's Japanese whiskey collection is particularly noteworthy, offering rare bottles and flights that tell the story of Japanese whiskey-making.
Living Room provides an all-day dining venue with a refined residential feel. Morning pastries and artisanal coffees give way to light lunches and afternoon tea service. The venue's drink menu includes an extensive selection of rare teas sourced from across Asia, including limited-edition Chinese and Japanese varieties.
Wellness Above the Clouds
The Sense Spa, positioned on the 33rd floor, offers a tranquil escape with six treatment rooms overlooking the city. Traditional Khmer healing techniques are incorporated into signature treatments, using locally-sourced ingredients like Kampot pepper and organic coconut oil. The 24-hour fitness center features stateof-the-art Technogym equipment and personal training services.
While the hotel doesn't have a conventional pool, it compensates with a stunning indoor lap pool on the 33rd floor. The 20-meter pool, surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows, offers a unique swimming experience with city views that few hotels worldwide can match.
Cultural Canvas:
Rosewood's Artistic Soul
The Rosewood Phnom Penh's commitment to Cambodia's artistic renaissance is prominently displayed through its innovative Art Gallery and Art in Residence program, establishing the hotel as a significant patron of contemporary Cambodian art. The dedicated gallery space, spanning the hotel's public areas, serves as a dynamic platform for both established and emerging local artists, with carefully curated exhibitions rotating every three months.
The Art in Residence program, launched in 2019, has become a cornerstone of Phnom Penh's contemporary art scene. This initiative goes beyond traditional hotel art programs by offering selected artists short-term residencies within the hotel. During their stay, artists create new works inspired by their surroundings, interact with guests through workshops and talks, and contribute to the hotel's growing permanent collection. Notable past residents have included Sopheap Pich, internationally recognized for his rattan sculptures,
and Thang Sothea, whose architectural installations explore Cambodia's rapid urbanization.
The hotel's permanent collection, comprising over 600 pieces, tells the story of Cambodia's cultural evolution. Curated by renowned art consultant Sasha Young, the collection features commissioned works that range from traditional Khmer-inspired pieces to bold contemporary installations. Highlights include the dramatic 20-meter ceiling installation in the sky lobby, created by FONKi, a Cambodian-Canadian street artist, which depicts the flow of the Mekong River using modern abstract techniques. Each floor of the hotel showcases themed collections, with detailed catalogs available for art enthusiasts who wish to explore the works in depth.
Regular art tours, conducted by local art historians, offer guests intimate insights into Cambodia's contemporary art movement, while monthly "Art & Wine" evenings combine gallery viewings with wine tastings, creating a sophisticated cultural salon atmosphere.
Meetings and Events with a View
The hotel's meeting facilities span 1,300 square meters, including the pillarless Vattanac Ballroom with its 6.5-meter ceiling height. Five additional meeting rooms feature advanced technology and dramatic city views, making them ideal for both corporate events and social gatherings.
Location: The Heart of Modern Phnom Penh
Situated in the central business district, the hotel provides easy access to both historical landmarks and modern attractions. The Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda are just a 10-minute drive away, while the art deco Central Market is within walking distance. The emerging BKK1 district, known for its boutiques, restaurants, and bars, is also nearby.
The hotel's concierge team curates unique experiences, from private tours of Wat Phnom, the city's oldest Buddhist temple, to sunset cruises on the Mekong River. They can also arrange visits to the emerging gallery scene in Toul Tom Poung or exclusive access to private collections of Khmer artifacts.
Beyond Luxury
From its lofty perch atop Vattanac Capital Tower, this vertical urban resort has redefined luxury hospitality in Southeast Asia, setting benchmarks that extend far beyond traditional five-star service. Whether you're sipping craft cocktails at Sora while watching the sun set over the Mekong, enjoying a treatment at Sense Spa inspired by ancient Khmer healing practices, or discussing contemporary art with a resident artist, each moment here feels curated yet authentic. For travelers seeking to experience Cambodia's exciting transformation from a privileged vantage point, Rosewood Phnom Penh offers not just accommodation, but a front-row seat to history in the making. It's more than a luxury hotel; it's a testament to Cambodia's bright future and an embodiment of modern Asian sophistication.
