Dear Friends, Welcome to our October 15th issue of HOT Hua Hin. Forbes Magazine recently released its annual list of the richest amongst us. Not surprisingly, for the 15th time in 20 years, Bill Gates topped the list. When we think of these billionaires, images of large yachts and homes usually comes to mind, but what is little known is the extent to which they give back to the community. On page 24 we take a sneak peek at the charitable works of Bangkok based Bill and Kathy Heinecke along with their Minor International Corp. employees. Our foreign correspondent, Thassha “Gift” Vitayaviroj wraps up her two part adventure to the rooftop of the world, that’s on page 50. Hua Hin is known for many things but at the top of the list should be the beautiful women who reside here. The Hua Hin Women’s Club gets together monthly to raise money for children and charitable causes. On September 24th the gorgeous ladies and their lucky men descended on the Centara Grand for a masquerade ball. Check out the photos on page 54. Recognizing that so many of us in Hua Hin travel to Bangkok regularly for dining, shopping and fun, we have expanded our magazine and will now have a monthly section devoted to what’s going on in the city of angels. We start on page 58 where you’ll find out who took home the gold at this years Thailand Property Awards where over 500 of Thailand’s industry leaders gathered at the Conrad Hotel in Bangkok for the gala dinner and awards ceremony. Who doesn’t love a pool party? In the heart of Bangkok is the Ocean Urban lounge and resort where some of the best pool parties are thrown. On Saturday September 20th Thai fashion designer and owner of our favorite modeling agency, Kamonrat “Emmy” Ladseeta threw an epic Birthday party / fashion show, that starts on page 68. Our HOT Getaway takes us to Bangkok’s China Town where you’ll get clued in on how and where to shop for ridiculous bargains, page 70. Finally, We go to Vouge’s Fashion Night Out where the beautiful people modeled some of the newest fashion’s, page 74. If you’ve read more than one issue of this magazine you’ll know that we are dog lover’s and take to heart the plight of Thai street dogs. 99% of these dogs are loving animals who are starved for love and attention. Please practice acts of kindness, you’ll be amazed at how good it will make you feel. From all of us at HOT Hua Hin, we hope you enjoy the read,

orbes magazine recently came out with their annual list of the richest people in the world and for the 15th time in the last 20 years Bill Gates topped the list with 81.1 billion USD’s. Not surprisingly it was his 21st consecutive year of being the wealthiest American. Some billionaire’s flaunt their riches and a lot of us live vicariously through them. They own the biggest yachts, the most resplendent homes, the largest, most luxurious aircrafts and world famous sports teams. Billionaire Steve Balmer, the newly retired CEO of Microsoft, was recently in the news after he paid 2 billion USD’s for the Los Angeles Clippers, the highest price ever paid for a National Basketball Association team. Billionaire Steve Wynn, who made his money in Casino’s, has a passion for art. In 1997 he bought Picasso’s “Le Reve” for $48 million. In 2006 he held a little going away party at his office for “Le Reve” after agreeing to sell her to SAC Capital’s Steve Cohen for $139 million. The party was festive until while showing off the painting to his pals, Wynn (who has vision problems) got to close to the painting OCT 15 - NOV 15 , 2014
and ended up putting his right elbow right through it. The estimated damage was $40 million and the sale of course fell through. In addition to enjoying their prosperity (some more than others), most wealthy people also believe in philanthropy and are doing wonderful things with their fortune. Starting at the top, the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation (gatesfoundation.org) focuses on global health initiatives and Global Development programs. Here in Thailand, Minor Corporation’s founder Bill Heinecke and his wife Kathy are also big believers in philanthropy. According to Kathy, “Bill and I feel very strongly about giving back to the country and people of Thailand who have been so good to us. Our primary charity is the Roy E Heinecke Scholarship Fund, which was set up in the name of Bill’s father. The foundation so far has provided education to over 850 under-privileged children from nursery school to the university level”. Another way the Heinecke’s give back is through their Founders Day program. “As June 4 is Bill’s birthday, everyone in
the company was always scrambling to find a gift for the boss. We dedicated the day as Founder’s Day, and all the different divisions of the company, including International divisions make it a charity day, or take on a charity project. The big projects include adopting schools in need of repair. Minor staff and their families as well as franchise partners and suppliers donate their time and money to upgrade these schools and community centers. Painting, planting, etc. giving not just money but time and energy.” The Heinecke’s are well known for all of the Elephant projects that benefit from the King’s Cup Elephant Polo tournament, sponsored by Anantara Hotel’s for 13 years. The devastating 2004 Tsunami took not only lives but also people’s livelihoods. Seeing the need, the Heinecke’s set up a school project in Baan Chao Thai Mai for sea gypsies who had lost their homes and boats. They also set up a revolving small business fund in the Baan Nam Khem area to help those in need of a handup instead of a hand-out. Restaurants, computer repair, shrimp breeding farms etc. we’re started with these funds, as
well as the purchase of fishing boats for the islands of Koh Phra None. Over the years Kathy has worked with many of the royal charities. With Support of the princess Mother’s Charity the Heinecke’s sponsored the VOSH group of optometrists to come to Thailand to examine eyes and give prescription glasses to over 500 patients per day during their week-long clinic. As is so often the case with philanthropy, this collation of Bill and Kathy’s charitable works is almost certainly incomplete, and may even omit some of the their greater or favourite charities. But it scarcely matters. As philanthropists, Bill and Kathy share a unique humbleness. Philanthropists’ full works are almost never revealed in their entirety. Charitable giving is seldom afforded the public acclaim of sporting achievement, of business prowess or even of academic accomplishments. It just proceeds quietly along. But for sure, many scholars, schools, species and disadvantaged Thais are the better for Bill & Kathy Heinecke’s generosity. OCT 15 - NOV 15 , 2014

he Barai Spa, part of the Hyattt Regency Hua Hin, must be the one of the most impressive Spa’s in size and design in Asia. The Spa was designed by famous architect Mr. Lek Bunnag, and the remarkable building that houses the Spa was inspired by the Khmer cultural heritage and is meant to showcase the glory of the Khmer style. But for me, entering The Barai, I felt like I had entered ancient Egypt, there is something about the Barai that just evokes the feeling of being a royal in an ancient world. Experiencing the sheer size of the place, the very ancient style of the design, with modern touches and the sun covered walkways is already worth every penny you pay for any treatment. Add to this the great attention to detail, the very experienced staff , the luxury of the place and this makes not just for any Spa outing but a seriously nice & memorable experience. This is a place to bring your camera, it might not be suitable behavior to run around snapping pictures in the steam room but just a picture of the main court is worth a thousand words. OCT 15 - NOV 15 , 2014
The Spa provides eight exclusive residential spa suites and 18 treatment rooms within the 18,500 sqm Spa so we are not talking about the typical size of a Spa. As you enter you are immediately awed by the dark but artistic entrance that plays with flickers of light to guide you to the mind blowing water courtyard. The water courtyard is very impressive in design with a massive water feature with the sky as its roof. Although I like the idea that design is Khmer based, in the courtyard your mind again recalls to ancient Egyptian opulence. The design also plays with the elements of Water, Earth, Air and Fire and this can be seen in light sources and is also reflected in music and treatments choices. Water is meant to be a soothing source, earth fortifying, air rejuvenates and finally fire revitalizes and it looks damn good when used as design aspect of the Spa. The spa has an extensive menu but also boasts the most “Wow” changing, steam and sauna rooms! So happily before my treatment I was left to change into a butter soft morning robe, to read magazines and sample the treatment pantry. I would have been
perfectly happy to stay in the changing rooms all day. This must be the nicest changing room I have ever sampled. With massive high ceilings, beautiful lighting that makes anyone look good in the mirror, crazy fancy showers, a real steam room it should be compulsory to spend one hour relaxing before any treatment. This is not a changing room to swish in and out of, this is THE changing room. It had been decided that I would get to try a Thai Compress Massage, which I have to admit I have never tried. The Thai Herbal Ball compress technique offers several potential health benefits: notably it induces deep relaxation, relieves stress and fatigue, boosts physical well-being, improves blood circulation and just smells heavenly. The herbs in the compress possess properties that are anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, astringent and antioxidant. There are a few choices for herbs used but for my treatment it was decided I would try The Air based Sweet Basil and Kaffir Lime Compress Massage. I have to say, it doesn’t hamper relaxation that the treatment starts by guests walking meandering paths with
hand raked sand paths to your beautiful treatment room. The whole experience makes you feel a bit superior and “happening” just due to the very fabulous surroundings and the first class service. The treatment rooms boast morrocan inspired (my opinion) wood details, beautiful mini sky lights and yet is dark but inviting. The treatment starts with the whole body receiving a deep treatment with the Compress. The therapist presses and kneads the compress to the body releasing the very relaxing smell of Sweet Basil & Lime. This is swiftly followed by a massage that is soothing and relaxing, so relaxing in fact that by the time I was halfway through I kept waking myself up with my snoring. Snoring to me is a sign of a good massage, “no snore, no nice”. I am happy that the staff had recommended that I continue the treatment with a facial as there is no way could have roused immediately after the Compress massage. I was very excited to try the Caviar Cell Vitale Facial as I know that is very popular with the highest accolades of society and this facial did not disappoint. The facial is different in many ways to others I have experienced namely in that great care that was put into the way the treatment was experienced by the guest, for example delicious smelling mist sprays were used on the face in-between different facial stages. I assume the mist is as astringent but also releases heavenly scents and refreshes. Also the mask is applied to the entire face including eyelids which is unusual, making sure I have the cleanest eyelids in Hua Hin. Products used are by Kerstin Florian and I really loved the smells especially the day cream used to finish of the treatment. All products used in the treatment can be purchased in the Spa boutique which by the way looks like Aladdin’s cave. The treatment is highly relaxing and leaves your skin luminescent and hydrated. I was surprised at this point to realize that I felt fresh and rested after these two treatments. So there must be some truth to the four elements used in treatments, as my treatment was Air that rejuvenates. Hot Score: The Spa has so won many awards , but the latest I am aware of is the Award of Outstanding Performance for a Resort Spa in Thailand by Thailand Tourism. With this kind of setting and treatments it’s no wonder they are so popular with tourists and even the highest of the Thai Elite. I will keep this simple. Unbelievable architecture! Great products! Best changing rooms in my history! A Five star experience through and through. Want to treat someone or yourself to beauty, relaxation and pampering choose The Barai experience, because that is what it is. Tip: Make sure to spend too long in the changing rooms! e Bistro was established to cater to people who love fine dining in Hua Hin. Experienced restaraunter Peter Kirkterp, owner of La Grappa, Café Crêpes and Mondo Vino decorated this restaurant in classic black and white with neutral tones evoking a feeling of a French Bistro in Paris. Le Bistro is known for their excellent dinners and fabulous and affordable French cuisine lunches. The restaurant’s day to day business is run by Romain Alétu who is an old hand & expert in French cooking, running successful restaurants around the world. Peter Kirkterp has a reputation that precedes him for serving good food and excellent wines, therefore even the owner of HOT Hua Hin Magazine wanted to join for the food review. It was a great pleasure having Peter join in for lunch and he guided us through the menu, recommending just the right things and gave us a crash course on the food Le OCT 15 - NOV 15 , 2014
Bistro is famous for. Of course the lunch would not be the same without a glass of Champagne, followed by red & white wine and dessert wine to finish it off. This time we did not agonize over the appropriate wines to choose as Peter being a wine connoisseur and wine seller chose just the right ones. But here in Le Bistro you can easily ask the staff to recommend wines to suit your budget and dish or see the menu were appropriate drinks to each course are listed. The Lunch started off with Les Escargot’s tossed in garlic parsley butter and mashed potatoes flavored with truffle oil, all served in a cute jar. I love Escargot (snails) and haven’t had them in a long time and this was a very novel way to serve them without a shell just resting on mashed potato and the truffle oil. My colleague ended up giving me hers when she found out half way through happily eating the
Escargot that she was eating Snails. If you are like her, give it a try, the consistency of properly cooked Snails is neither nasty or scary but really a very nice treat. Of course I did not turn away an offer of a second helping to this delicacy. The starter was followed by La Braise, a braised beef in red wine, accompanied with a pumpkin and broccoli puree. La Barramundi was also served. The filet of barramundi is garnished with fennel and confit tomato. I have tried the Barramundi at Le Bistro before and its light and delicious. At Le Bistro they know to serve a dish beautifully. The plate of Barramundi is decorated with edible flowers and splashes of delicious sauces. I especially love the sauce of the Barramundi. I had requested from Peter that he show case any kind of meat dishes as I had a very nice food encounter at Le Bistro last Christmas with my family trying different
meat dishes and we were very pleased. So he served us Le Braise and it certainly did not disappoint. The beef is cooked in red wine until it melts in your mouth, it is quite fatty but this is to retain the nice meat flavor through the cooking. The pumpkin & broccoli puree is to die for and served with cooked vegetables on the side. We were so full after these dishes, plus I ate most of the (ok, all of the) delicious bread basket so we decided to take a pause with a delicious mini sorbet and some small talk and wine. But it did not take long before we were ready for some more “punishment” in the form of the to die for French Toast and Chocolate Delize dessert. The Chocolate Delize was a mini chocolate cake in mouthwatering density with different flavors of cocoa. As for the French Toast, it is said that this dessert comes from a secret recipe by Romain Alétu Grandmother. This dessert took the total prize in taste and texture! This dessert is now my ultimate favorite of all desserts in Hua Hin. Even the ones I have said in the past are my favorites pale in comparison. This item is not found on the menu but you can request it and you should. I have no idea how it’s made or don’t really even care except to say it is the most divine of desserts. It doesn’t resemble any French Toast I have tried before, the consistency is fluffy and light with just the right sweetness. I joked after the lunch saying for my Birthday I wanted a pizza sized French Toast from Le Bistro, and I would not share even at that size! Hot Score: All in all we had a delicious and jovial lunch, all the food was good. My favorites were though the Escargot, Vive la France for creating the Snail eating culture and thanks to Le Bistro for tweaking this dish to new heights. I loved the Braised Beef for its lovely texture and purees. But it was the French Toast that I desperately need more of everyday. Le Bistro has very affordable lunch deals offering fine dining at wallet friendly price. This is the place to treat yourself on blue and empty stomach, a place to eat good French food and great for romantic dinners were you want impress your date. Well done Le Bistro. We love Le Bistro and their French Toast! 214 Phetkasem Road, Hua Hin Tel: 032 900 143

Spa Treats Good Enough to Eat@ Amari
Breeze Spa, the fun-filled spa concept from Amari, has created a special offer to introduce the Almond Milk Honey Body Scrub. For centuries bees and honey have been connected with health and prosperity. Recently, bee populations have been challenged by man-made pesticides, genetically modified plants, pollution and other toxins. Consequently, Amari has launched ‘Plan Bee’, a beekeeping CSR project aimed to help preserve local biodiversity. As there are many health benefits of honey, both as food and for the skin, raw honey has been carefully harvested from the project and is now being used at Breeze Spa. It has become an essential ingredient of special body treatments and promotes skin nourishment by removing salts and toxins, producing noticeable changes in the skin. Now at Amari Hua Hin, guests can receive a FREE Almond Milk Honey Body Scrub (regularly priced at THB 1,650 THB) when making an advanced booking for any treatment from the a la carte spa menu that is 45 minutes or longer.* For more details or to make an appointment, please call 03261 6600 OCT 15 - NOV 15 , 2014

“ cook with wine, sometimes I even add it to the food”. W.C. Fields, the man attributed to that quote would have felt right at home at the Anantara Wine Dinner held Saturday September 6th at Baan Thalia, the Anantara Resort’s Italian restaurant in Hua Hin. Diners were in the thrall of Executive Chef Hans Peter Held, Anantara Hua Hin, combined with visiting star and host, Chef Danilo Sangrigoli, Manager and Italian Chef of Brio at Anantara Bangkok Riverside. Guests were treated to a gastronomic extravaganza featuring gourmet Italian specialties, blending tradition with innovation, each course artfully complemented by the superb wines of Siam Winery. The degustation started with Welcoming Cocktails and once ushered into the dining room the real enjoyment intensified. The first course was marinated fresh sea bass bound with capers, wild lemon thyme, orange and a salad of confit of tomatoes which was served with a Russiz Superiore Pinot Grigio. Delicate homemade lobster and mushroom ravioli’s in a tantalizing saffron cream sauce followed. This was perfectly paired with a Braida Il Baciale Monferrato Rosso DOC. With an intermission of lime sherbet and limoncello the main course was next. Tantalizing slow roasted beef tenderloin on a light rucola mash with a balsamic shallot sauce and truffle foam was presented, paired with the heartier Braida Briccodell Uccellone. Next came a cheese plate of Taleggio, gorgonzola, spicy provolone auricchio, torregio and Rossini cheese with honey walnuts, fig jam and red onion balsamic confit, paired with a Braida Montebruna. The final crowd pleaser, a chocolate lava cake with warm liquid centered dark chocolate accompanied by pistachio ice cream was paired with a Monsoon Valley Muscat. Siam Winery’s delightful and Thai-produced, Monsoon Valley wines were more familiar to participants, while addition of the Braida range of premium Italian wines, also by Siam Winery, was a topic of intense interest. Aside from the complementing each course with a perfectly matched wine, Chef Danilo’s 30 years of experience in five-star hotels and restaurants around the world, was evident throughout. That authentic Italian taste fused delightfully with the finest of Thailand. Many of the dishes remain available for gourmands at the Sala Siam Lobby restaurant and the Baan Thalia restaurant at the Anantara, Hua Hin.

fter three days in Lhasa, we made our way to Gyantse, 270 kilometers to the southwest. The bus took us along the friendship highway. This main road connects the capital of Tibet with the Chinese/Nepalese border at Zhangmu. On the way to Gyantse, the first stop of the day was at Gangbala pass, which is 4,852 meters above the sea. The bus stopped for us to take a picture of “Yamdrok Lake” (Or Turquoise Lake in the Tibetan language), one of the three holy lakes in Tibet. The view was gorgeous and the color of the water was very well deserving of its name. Here, you can have a picture with Tibetan’s Dog or his Yak. Next, we stopped by at Karola Glacier at altitude 5,045m before arriving in the ancient town of Gyantse. This city is also known as the Hero City because of the determined resistance of the Tibetans during the British invasion in 1904. We stopped by at Gyang Tse Dzong (literally ‘fortress of Gyantse’). The Fortress marks the actual site of the Gyantse defense during that war. The top of the fortress is about a 20 minutes walk from the gate but it is worth the climb to see a panoramic view of the whole city. The hotel we stayed was very nice and is conveniently near a famous restaurant, the ‘Gyantse Kitchen’. This restaurant is run by the local people and serves Western, Tibetan and Indian food. A percentage of the income of this restaurant is used for supporting poor families in Gyantse.
Next morning, we were back on the road again. Our next destination was Tingli town in Shigatse, some 300 kilometers away. In the morning, we first stopped at the Government Office to apply for a special permit to proceed to Everest Base Camp. The process took about 2 hours. Afterwards, we went to visit Tashilump Monastery where the highest statue of Buddha in Tibet is placed. Around the monastery are many stalls selling Tibetan jewelry made from silver and precious stones. A unique and readily available souvenir is a very traditional Tibetan door curtain. I bought one to use on my house door! The guide gave us some time to shop and to have lunch. After lunch, we were on the bus for six hours straight until we finally reached Tingri town, just right before the sunset along Himalaya range. It was just indescribable! I can’t remember how many times I pressed the shutter on my camera. That night was spent at Amdo Guesthouse. The guesthouse is in the Tibetan style, room for two small beds, but no shower room and no indoor toilet inside. Instead there is an infamous ‘long-drop’ toilet outside. (If you don’t know what a long-drop toilet is, it is simply a little hole on the floor, over a pit!) For us, this long-drop toilet was among the few unpleasant parts of this trip. I was not very comfortable that night. I was developing a touch of altitude sickness, marked but the onset of a mild sore throat and a headache. My friend and I decided and early dinner and straight to bed was in order. We wanted to be prepared and alert for the journey to Everest Base Camp next day. We were approaching our destination! Next morning I awoke very early. I don’t know whether it was because I had gone to bed so early, or anticipating the exciting events that lay ahead this day! This morning our guide gave us an extra bottle of oxygen. The road journey from Tingri to EBC is only about 70 kilometers but takes about 4-5 hours by vehicle, because the road conditions are so challenging. Our first stop was at the entrance ticket checkpoint for Qomolangma (Mt Everest) Nature Reserve (Everest is also known as ‘Chomolungma’, ‘Qomolangma’ or ‘Zhumulangma’ in local Tibetan dialects). The bus progressed very slowly along the bumpy road. At every super bump, I was jolted up, down or sideways. However, this was compensated by the unfolding views along the way being simply awesome. We were surrounded by the snow-capped mountains and seemed to be in the middle of nowhere. We passed the last checkpoint and drove along the river until we reached the “Tent City” or Za-Rombuk, where we were to spend a night – just 4KM short of Everest Base Camp. Locals set up the tents for only six months each year. Inside each tent are camp beds. We grabbed a Yak blanket each and chose two spots beside the owner’s sleeping area. Heating came from a stove in the middle of the room, burning Yak’s dung. The tent was darkly discoloured and was a little stuffy from the smoke of the stove. After unpacking our gear, we started exploring the immediate area of the Tent City. Finally, the time for the final leg to Everest Base Camp had arrived! There is available a local ‘Green Bus’ service from The Tent City to EBC for 25RMB. We decided to trek instead of sitting on the bus. Isn’t it cool to be able to say we trekked to Everest Base Camp? We started the walk from the Tent and first stopped at Rongbuk Monastery, the highest monastery in the world. From here there can be a great view of Mt. Everest. Unfortunately on this occasion Mt. Everest was hiding behind the clouds. We continued walking on the dirt road, up a small hill and clambered over some rocks that gave us a short cut. It was not a long trek but very tiring because of the extreme elevation. Finally we had made it! We were at 5,200m above the sea and this was the closest spot from which the full view and majesty of Mt. Everest can be appreciated. We stood just 1KM away from the spot where Mountaineers set out to climb Mt. Everest from the north side. It was our dream to be up here, standing right before the world’s tallest mountain! No words can describe the feeling. Even though, the top of Everest remained obscured by clouds at that particular moment, it did not really matter anymore! I took out a prayer flag on which I wrote my name, my friends and families’ names, and hung it up on top of the hill at the Everest Base OCT 15 - NOV 15 , 2014

Camp. I made it! I was at the highest place I would ever experience in my life. We headed back down to the Tent City, taking the Green Bus. By this point I was starting to feel shaky from the cold and dizzy from the altitude. Upon arrival back at the tent I was tucked under multiple blankets and had a severe headache. The owner of the tent gave me a cup of hot Cola boiled with ginger to drink. It tasted weird but it helped to warm me. I could not eat and had a very poor night’s sleep. I woke up to throw up and several times during the night feeling like I was suffocating. Next morning we were awakened by our Guide announcing, “The sky is open now!” Maybe it was because of the altitude sickness we were
OCT 15 - NOV 15 , 2014
experiencing, but it took us a while to realize the significance of what he was saying. Then, we had to pry ourselves out of bed and get out of the tent, to experience the once-in-a-lifetime moment; the top of Mt. Everest clearly visible! All the sickness we had to gone through the previous night was worth it just for this moment. We left the camp and set out for Zhangmu, a Chinese-Nepalese border town. Along the way, we stopped by at Tong La pass, the last pass in Tibet on the road to Nepal. We were lucky with the weather, which allowed clear views along the length of a large part of the Himalaya Range. After travelling through the pass and with descending elevation,
the scenery changed completely, giving way to green mountain areas. The bus took us along Bote Khosi River, passing through millions of curves before we got to Zhangmu. All the sickness we had last night had magically disappeared. Importantly, we got to shower again after being smelly for 2 nights. Next morning our guide sent us to the Nepal border. It was time to say goodbye to our friends and to our beloved guide. We had come so far and seen so many things in this past two weeks. I don’t know what I could ask for more! “Once in a Lifetime I’ve Been to the Rooftop of the world!”
Travel tips: The roads out of Lhasa are up and down the mountain with lot of curves. Be prepared and take medication if you are prone to carsickness. Altitude Sickness is common at Everest Base Camp. Refrain from unnecessary running, jumping or vigorous activities. Inhale and exhale steadily and deeply. After visit EBC, you can either go on to Zhangmu and cross the border into Nepal or return to Lhasa by vehicle, to catch connecting flights. The drive from EBC to Lhasa takes about 10-13 hours driving hours. Nepal has its own beauties, scenery and tourist attractions. The overland route from Lhasa to Kathmandu is one of the most spectacular in Asia, and is highly recommended. Visas for Nepal can be obtained on arrival at a cost of US$ 25. Be sure to have two extra passportsize photos available for the visa application. Public transport is readily available, or a private car from the border with Nepal to Kathmandu. The Public bus cost around US$10$ per person and hiring a car costs around US$100 to US$120$. The distance is 115KM, and takes about 5-6 hours. If you are by yourself but do not wish to take the Public Bus, you can generally pool with some other travellers to share a private car. A few extra days around Kathmandu can be beneficially spent in the KTM valley (Patan, Bhaktapur and Nagargot). Many guesthouses and hotels are available in Thamel area. For stays of more than a week, the addition of a visit to Pokhara city is highly recommended. For travellers seeking high adventures, a visit to “The Last Resort” and the world’s 3rd highest natural bungee jump (160 meters) should satisfy the most ambitious of thrill-seekers. The resort is located near the Nepal border.

n Wednesday September 24th the Hua Hin Women’s club held a glittering masquerade ball and gala dinner party at the Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin. It seemed like the entire town showed up to support Hua Hin Women’s Club and the charities they support. Over 250 people attended dressed up in fancy masks and the women were dressed up in their most beautiful evening gowns. It was an event that surpasses all events just by the beautiful display of the guests. The event was held in the beautiful Centara Grand Beach Resort’s Colonial Hall and there was a standout International buffet that was excellent and plentiful as would be expected.
Experienced Hua Hin MC Jerry Mosselman conducted the event and there was entertainment brought in from Bangkok as well as dancing to keep the guest entertained. The aim of the event was to collect as much as possible for local breast cancer charities. Many local people turn to the Hua Hin Women’s Club when they are struck down by this illness and the Club has been very supportive to patients and recovering breast cancer survivors. etting a benchmark for excellence in the region’s property sector, the 2014 Thailand Property Awards welcomed over 500 of the industry’s leaders to celebrate the winners at a lavish Gala Dinner held 11th September at Bangkok’s Conrad Hotel. “There were many exceptional entries for the 22 awards this year and the judges had a tough time in whittling down thousands of nominations, hundreds of entries and visiting more than 40 short-listed developments around the country to finally reach their decisions. It’s never an easy task and I’d like to thank the judges for their time, diligence and expertise,” said Terry Blackburn, CEO, Ensign Media Co. Ltd., organizers of the awards. “This year’s Winners and Highly Commended developers and developments should be rightly proud of their achievements.” Professionally run by Ensign Media, publishers of Property Report magazine, the ninth annual Thailand Property Awards recognize exceptionalism in architecture, design, construction and development, rewarding the best condominiums, housing developments, villas, commercial buildings and hotels. The international judging panel was once again led by Chairman Sunchai Nuengsit, Managing Director, BuilderSmart Public Company Limited and overseen by Paul Ashburn of BDO Advisory Limited, which has been fundamental to the Awards’ success and the high regard with which they are held by the industry. The much-anticipated ‘Best Developer Thailand’ award – past winners of which reads like a who’s who of Thailand’s real estate industry – this year went to Major Development PCL whose more than 15-year track record of real estate development in the Kingdom is exemplary. Big winners of the night were Magnolia Quality Development Corporation Limited, who took home three awards and were Highly Commended in two other categories, while Pace Development Corporation PLC took home the highly sought-after ‘Best Luxury Condo Development (Bangkok)’ award against some tough competition for Their Ritz-Carlton Residences at MahaNakhon. Pace is also the company behind the exciting ultra-luxe Hua Hin project Maha Samutr, currently under construction. In Hua Hin the big winner was My Resort Hua Hin which took the “Best Residential Development Hua Hin” Award. According to the TPA’s, “My Resort Hua Hin provides their buyers with a superior location matched with great family amenities, including a beach club & restaurant while at the same time providing outstanding value for money. For those solid reasons they were voted the Best Residential Development in Hua Hin”.

According to Hua Hin head Judge Russ Downing, “Although it is the national panel, not the local judging team who make the final decision, we at the local level had an exceptionally difficult time defining who the best out of the top 3 was. It was some of the closest point scores I’ve seen in the seven years I’ve headed the Hua Hin judging team”. Another Hua Hin high point came when SLM Real Estate, doing business as Orchid Palm Homes, took the award for “Best Boutique Developer Thailand” which is just one down from the top Award of the evening, that being “Best Developer Thailand”. After winning “Best Residential Development Hua Hin” for 2012 and 2013 SLM decided this year to compete on a National level and took the Award on their first entry attempt.

HWOAR, means. fit, hot and sexy in internet slang. ‘Yaowarat’ is a similar sound. It is the hub of Bangkok’s fabled ChinaTown. It too is fit, hot - and one of the sexiest places on the planet for a shoppaholic. Hemmed by Yaowarat Road and the Bangkok’s Charoen Krung thoroughfare, and centred around Sam Phen Lane (from which it takes its local name), this wonderful secret has been treasured by re-sellers, wholesalers and retail-market operators for decades. A shopping phenom, it is also accessible to the serious and sophisticated shopper – from Thailand or Internationally. But beware; this is a wholesale market. In sharp contrast to Thailand’s many and colourful markets, the country’s ubiquitous tailors, and vendors of most all other outlets in the country, there is no bartering. Sam Phen Market proprietors are just too busy. Most items are sold in multiples – ear-rings sell by the 10 or a dozen pair – and for fixed prices. Transactions are frequent, swift, final and
unbelievably cheap. Turnover is rapid. No time for banter. A comfortable day-trip from Hua Hin, this historic, market has been making its mark since at least the late 1940’s. It was graced by a visit from the King, shortly after WWII. Real estate in Sam Phen Market is now some of the most prized in all of Asia. And it just keeps getting bigger and better. A compact, pulsating and seething exchange of many of the world’s finest goods, the scope and range of wares is unbelievable; the bargains are unsurpassed. Antiques, computer accessories, electric goods, fabrics, garments, imported goods, jewellery, musical instruments, produce, stationery, souvenirs, textiles – it is all here in the narrow, sinuous corridors, packed to the brim with wares.

You feel at the centre of the real Asia. Amidst the hub-hub of trade, turnover and turmoil, one must step aside for the lumbering cart to pass – followed by the motorcycle stacked high. Hard to fathom which are incoming and which are outgoing goods. Somehow and to some relief., ones’ heels, toes and shins are intact – a tribute to the grace and awaewness of all participants. But start early. Sam Phen’s commercila ballet is a morning event. By mid-afternoon it is done. That level of energy requires a period for participants to regroup, gather energy and prepare for the next day’s session, or for the conversion to dining and its distinctive nightlife. Once the sun has set the colours of Chinatown transform. Beneath the aura of neon signs, the senses brace for an exquisit new overload of aromas. Taking one’s lead from the locals (and one’s life in one’s hands), a courageous dart across streets finds a caccaphony of eateries with menues to fit any budget. Upmarket restaurants, humble noodle shops and everything between assault the diligent shopper’s appetite. And here the bartering resumes; that wonderful discovery of the magical point at which both vendor and consumer perceive a bargain! With senses still on high-alert, shopped-out, replete and – yes – just a little exhausted, one retires. Reflecting on the days purchases and adventures will take time. In planning the morrow, a trip to the ATM will be a priority. As Bo Derek said, “Whoever said money can’t buy happiness simply didn’t know where to go shopping.” Bo must have known of, and experienced, Bangkok’s Chinatown. Naae Louise Serra
