Dear Reader, Welcome to Issue 10 Volume 3. Hua Hin continues to grow with new must-see tourist destinations. The latest is Ratchapak Park located just a few Kilometers south of Hua Hin’s center. On 222 rai of land this park features 14 meter high bronze statues of seven past Kings of Thailand. The official grand opening took place on September 26th and was attended by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn and his daughter Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahikol. From our picture on page 18 you’ll see it was quite a grand affair! Life changing events happen in the blink of an eye and almost never with advance notice. For Edwin Wiek, his life changing event was a car crash that brought him to death’s door. We sit down with Edwin and learn how his life took a new direction after given a second chance to live it, that’s on page 36. On September 16th at Bangkok’s Plaza Athenee Hotel, the tenth anniversary Thailand Property Awards Gala Dinner took place. With over 500 of the Kingdom’s “who’s who” of Real Estate in attendance, this Black Tie event was one hot ticket and we take you there in style on page 48. Our “Let’s Go” feature this month takes us to the Province of Loei. The story starts on page 56 but don’t let the cover picture spook you, Loei Province has lots to offer besides a spooky mask festival. Those are just a few of the stories you’ll find inside this month. As always, thank you for picking us up and we hope you enjoy the read.

L et’s Meet Pafi Nunyakpe What is your full name and age? Pafi Nunyakpe – People just call me Pafi and I am 45 What is your current Job Position? Sales and Marketing Manager for Beautiful World Hua Hin. How long have you lived in Hua Hin or been coming to Hua Hin? I have been living here since February 2013, but I was coming to Hua Hin quite regularly before that having previously worked with the Beautiful World Thailand Group in Kho Phangan and Koh Samui. This meant that I already knew the owners Karen and David Keep who originally set the Hua Hin showroom up in 2006 and when they offered me the opportunity to work with them here in Hua Hin I had no hesitation in moving here. What did you know about Hua Hin before you moved here? I knew Hua Hin to be more of a family oriented and retirement town and being a father of two young boys this was a contributing factor to my decision to move here. Also I knew Hua Hin to be a huge Golf destination and an excellent environment for outdoor living. What do you like most about your profession? The best part of my job is being able to fulfil a client’s dream by creating exciting interiors and exteriors based on the client’s wishes and then seeing the final result of a full furniture installation and the happiness it brings the client for years to come. What do you like least about your profession? I enjoy 99.99% of what I do, that easily outweighs any negatives that I may encounter. What do you like most about Hua Hin? The recent addition of new entertainment venues and the excellent hospital and education facilities that are available make Hua Hin a great and safe location. What is your favorite restaurant and why? The Aroy Sushi on Soi 6 because of the fresh food and nice atmosphere. What do you like to do in your free time and why? On my days off I enjoy spending time with my family and taking them to local attractions. My other passion is off road enduro biking which has quite a following in Hua Hin and several of us 12

get together at weekends visiting areas that are difficult to get to by car. We recently came across a village somewhere near the Burmese Border on one of our trips and we stopped and bought cakes and snacks for the kids before the 2 hour trip home…very rewarding. What would you recommend to newcomers to do in Hua Hin and why? Invest in a property and buy new furniture from Beautiful World! Also join the Multi Cultural Community (MCC) which is a great way of meeting other nationalities here in Hua Hin but

mainly take advantage of all of the great local amenities and the many festivals and attractions that the municipality provides. Tell us a surprising fact that the public might not know about you? I was previously a snowboard and ski instructor. What is the most outlandish thing you have ever done and why? Some things are best left unsaid – anybody who was there at the time will know the answer to this.

here are times in life where you see yourself indecisive, unable to choose what type of cuisine you would like to savour. Perhaps it’s the hunger, not letting you think clearly, perhaps you just want more than one type of food? In cases such as those, have you ever felt like going to a restaurant which combines flavours from across the continents of the world? A bit of Mexican, a touch of European, a taste of local Thai food or perhaps a good fulfilling course of typical Vietnamese dishes. If that is you, then the Café Mekong has exactly what you are looking for. Recently relocated to Soi 94 merely a few streets south of Market Village and 200 metres past the railway tracks, it has undergone some wonderful remodelling.

October 15 - November 15 , 2015

The Hot Magazine team arrived to the tune of some vibrant Gypsy Kings music, and with that flair we were immediately presented with some beverage options. Mojitos and margaritas followed, and whilst we sipped on these delectable cocktails we accommodated ourselves in the ambiance of the establishment: Spacious and decorated with a predominant white theme, it truly provides a sense of comfort. Stylish redthemed modernist paintings contrast the white walls and set a nice scene, equally reproduced in the bar area. The first thing our team was brought was a complementary appetizer in the form of a sweet corn cake. Presented in a small concave plate, it had a crunchy first texture, which became tender as one savoured the corn kernels. These

released their natural sweetness which spread across the palate, followed subtly by a curious kick of the lemon grass spices with which it had been infused. A wonderful and unique teaser. Our evening brought more focus to the signature Mexican and Vietnamese dishes that are prepared here and it was the latter with which we began our entre: Fresh chicken and shrimp spring rolls with sweet peanut sauce and chili paste. This dish combined both the elements of land and sea, beginning with the distinct taste of the shrimp and which was thoroughly complemented by the soft chicken strips. These added a smoky flavour to general taste and was wonderfully contrasted by the nutty touch of the sweet peanut sauce. It is the chilli paste however that gave it a distinct

kick, highlighting all the flavours with a touch of tanginess. A wonderful dish all in all. Next we were presented with some variation from across the globe, in the form of some crunchy Mexican tacos. The first thing one noticed was the distinct smokiness of the chicken, which was complemented wonderfully by the separate tomato sauce. There was then a creamy touch, provided in combined fashion both by the crème fraiche and the Asadero cheese. The beans gave the dish a rounded taste, a certain hickory smokiness and roasted feel to the palate that ended each delectable bite. Next we ventured back to Vietnam and its intriguing tastes, in the form of Vietnamese Grilled Beef. This was

a confection of beef pods wrapped in betel leaves that had been left to simmer in a special marinade and were neatly presented with cocoons of vermicelli siders. Very well cooked, tender and flavourful, this was the dish that impressed the team the most because of its distinct taste. The leaves granted it a wonderful dimension and the vermicelli added to the array of textures. Lastly came another classical Mexican dish in the form of chicken fajitas. Presented in a sizzling circular plate, they came flaming out the kitchen, ready for consumption. As we finished mounding the meat on the tortilla and applied the platter of condiments with which it came, we took big juicy bites. The sweetness of the onions first kicked through. This was complemented by

the flavourful meaty hint of the sauce and of course the wonderful touch of the chicken, with a touch of spice. The dish was wonderfully ended with the characteristic aroma of the red peppers. A wonderful combination all in all. Café Mekong is definitely a place worth visiting in the up and rising restaurant filled Soi 94. Vietnamese, Mexican, European and Thai, this restaurant does it all beautifully. Our team was left thoroughly satisfied and look forward to going back soon again. A Conversation with Edwin Wiek

T

here is a club in this world that you do not join knowingly. One day you are just a member.

The club is “The Life Changing Events Club.” The fee to join takes many different forms. For some it can be the death of a spouse or a child, for others it can be a diagnosis of a potentially fatal disease. In the case of Edwin Wiek, it was a serious car accident that brought him to death’s door. At the age of 17 Edwin left school and joined the army. After doing his stint he got into the fashion business, a line of business that was familiar to his family. In short order he was promoted to buying assistant and traveled to interesting countries. Soon he was in Asia designing fashion accessories. At the young age of 23 he moved to Hong Kong and started his own company. In 1989 he moved to Thailand and set up a factory. Ten years later, on a fateful day, Edwin was involved in a serious car accident. During his long recovery Edwin realized that he wanted to leave something behind that wasn’t just rooted in money or business success. In August of 1999, a friend gave Edwin a monkey that he no longer wanted. Edwin started looking for wildlife NGO’s (non-governmental organization) which could take the monkey. He found that there were no proper facilities that could help so he decided to get out of the fashion business and set up his own organization looking after helpless animals. Edwin’s organization rescues wild animals from places where they are maltreated and/or neglected, and help them to spend the rest of their lives in a sanctuary as close to their natural environment with the best possible care. Edwin’s organization is also involved in education, particularly children, to stop cruelty to animals. They campaign against the illegal trade in wild animals for the pet industry and discourage the use of animals for entertainment, for example in performing animal shows Located just 20 minutes from Hua Hin, Edwin’s Wildlife Friends Foundation is an independent, self-funding NGO that rescues badly treated animals providing medical treatment and if necessary lifetime shelter. HOT Magazine recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Edwin to discuss his Foundation and the amazing care they give to god’s hurting creatures.

HOT Magazine: Tell us about what you do. Edwin Wiek: I founded the Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT) in 2001 and have since built up an organization, which provides full-time care for almost 1200 wild animals, and has rescued over 5,000 wild animals since its inception over 14 years ago. We manage two wildlife rescue centers, one in Thailand and one in Laos with 115 staff members and 60 volunteers. Along with the direct care of wildlife we also run various other projects and wildlife protection campaigns. HOT Magazine: What led you to take on such an initiative? Edwin Wiek: In October 1999 I fell asleep behind the wheel of my care on my way back from a business meeting, I had almost ended my life there and then. After such a life changing experience I felt fortunate to have survived and realized my life was not as fulfilled as it should be. During the months after the accident I evaluated my life and my business (I was the director of a factory that produced fashion accessories here in Thailand) and decided I wanted something different. During this time a friend handed over a monkey to me that he had bought for his girlfriend and could not keep any longer. I tried to find a suitable home for the monkey but was not able to, finding a wildlife rescue facility in Thailand was almost impossible, and soon the idea of building a home for wild animals like this monkey started to become a target of mine. HOT Magazine: What is it that you like the most about your job? Moreover, in what do you find the gratification of

your efforts?

me why the work I do is so important.

Edwin Wiek: The good moments are the moments you rescue an animal in need of help and you realize you can help them (in some cases we are too late). The best moments are the moments you can rehabilitate and release some of those animals back to the wild, giving them a new chance of life. Whenever I sit on my balcony at home, I am surrounded by the sounds, sights and smells of the animals rescued by WFFT, bears, elephants or gibbons among many others are around me having fun, this constantly reminds

HOT Magazine: What is it that you like the least about your job? How do you attempt to cope with these aspects?

October 15 - November 15 , 2015

Edwin Wiek: Politics. Unfortunately numerous government officials and politicians make lots of money out of elephant camps and other unethical wildlife tourist attractions, and from the illegal wildlife trade. We as an NGO with the objectives of animal welfare and wildlife conservation, of course directly oppose such people and their practices. Working with the government is a must,

but unfortunately due to the involvement of some officials with the exploitation or trade of wildlife makes it difficult at some times. HOT Magazine: Describe the Wildlife Friends Foundation in one word. Why do you chose that word? Edwin Wiek: Dream. It started as a dream for me, as I was fantasizing about starting this foundation 15 years ago. We worked hard to make it happen, let it grow sustainably and make it one of the best in Asia. With currently a wildlife rescue center and an elephant refuge

in Thailand and another rescue center in Laos, it is like living the dream, and things are still to get even better. We keep on dreaming. HOT Magazine: What vision for the future do you have in regard to the Wildlife Friends Foundations, what steps do you want it to have taken in say, ten years’ time? Edwin Wiek: Since early 2015 we have been working in Laos setting up a large rescue center, this is a big challenge but we are hopeful that it will be a success. With over 700 animals there already we need all the help we can get, to upgrade and rebuild many old zoo facilities, and continue with setting up a world class wildlife rescue facility in Laos. At the same time we are building a state of the art elephant hospital in Petchburi, Thailand, not far from Hua Hin. Along with the current pachyderms at WFFT we hope to start treating blind and other elephants in need from tourist camps within 2016. We hope to also start a wildlife rescue facility in Burma by 2017, so many things to do! HOT Magazine: What feelings do the news of mistreated animals, be it because of the value of their bodies or because of the taboo associated to them evoke in you? Edwin Wiek: The first few years I used to get furious at people mistreating animals, arriving at a rescue site I would witness animals housed in small and dirty enclosures or restrained with a very tight chain, in some cases the animal had spend up to 20 years in solitary confinement. After a few years I found that showing my emotions in front of these “owners” did not really help my cause, some were oblivious to the treatment (read torture) they provided to the animal, in some cases not even wanting a better life for their ‘beloved’ pet. Nowadays I am friendly, understanding and diplomatic to the people who keep these wild animals and I will not show my feelings. I do whisper and apologize into the ear of the animal and tell them that from this day on all is going to get better! HOT Magazine: What message would you like to broadcast to our readers in relation to this? How can each person do their part to prevent this directly or indirectly? Edwin Wiek: First of all do remember that if it is considered illegal or unethical in your country it probably is here too. I mean here in particular the exploitation and/or consumption of wildlife, tigers or elephants and many other species is very common. When you see animals in a very bad condition at a camp or zoo that you visit and paid an entrance for, you are supporting this exploitation. Thailand has plenty of fascinating wild animal species living within its National

parks, so if tourists or residents wish to see elephants or other wildlife, the best way is to visit these national parks and see these animals free in their natural habitat. HOT Magazine: We end with two quotes from one of the more outspoken animal rights activists of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries: “There are no wild animals until man makes them so” said Mark Twain. How do you feel about this quote? Edwin Wiek: Well actually all animals were wild, until we tortured and tamed some. HOT Magazine: “The more I learn about people, the more I like my dog”. Do you have hope for a world in which humans are able to renounce

their selfishness and cruelty and start respecting the livelihood and individual rights of all animals? What do you think Twain would say were he alive today? Edwin Wiek: With this one I can associate! We humans might be the most intelligent of all species on earth, but at the same time we are complicated, full of politics and sometimes straight-out evil. Dogs are there for you at all times, happy when you return home, even when you have left them for weeks! If you would like more information on the Wildlife Friends Foundation, or if you would like to volunteer or donate, visit their website, www.wfft.org.

Thailand Property Awards 2015

O

n Wednesday evening September 16th, the “who’s who” of Thailand’s Real Estate sector joined together at the Plaza Athenee hotel in Bangkok for an exclusive Black-tie dinner celebrating the tenth anniversary of the Thailand Property Awards with purpose to crown the Kingdom’s best developers.

48

October 15 - November 15 , 2015

Marking its first decade as an institution that helped put Thai real estate on the radar, the Thailand Property Awards 2015 honoured the Winners and Highly Commended in 29 categories over three sections: Developer, Development and Design. Three-time nominee SC Asset

Corporation PLC claimed the biggest award of the evening for Best Developer, beating ‘MQDC’ Magnolia Quality Development Corporation Limited, which received a Highly Commended certificate in the same category and was also presented a Special Recognition in Corporate Social Responsibility.

Completing at least 50 successful projects in the last five years that are focused on creating sustainable and “lively neighbourhoods”, SC Asset was a shoo-in for the year’s top honour, as well as for the Best Housing Development (Bangkok) award, which was given to its Granada Pinklao project that features practical design and friendly amenities. The

Chatuchak-based developer also became a Highly Commended winner in the Best Affordable Condo Development (Bangkok) for its Centric Tiwanon Station project. Another three-time nominee Absolute World Group emerged victorious, this time in the Best Boutique Developer category. Considered one of the current leaders

of the vacation club ownership industry in Thailand, the company is also known and respected for building an impressive boutique collection of forward-thinking resorts with an environmentally-conscious approach. The firm also bagged two Highly Commended honours for current developments on Phuket and Samui.

October 15 - November 15 , 2015

In a departure from the various award categories, the evening held a moment to honour Minor International’s founder, CEO and chairman, WIlliam “Bill” E. Heinecke, who was presented the Real Estate Personality of the Decade award by the editors of Property Report, Ensign Media’s industry-leading publication, for being a shining example of a true leader in Thai luxury real estate. It was the only award not selected by the independent panel of judges. “It is a great honour to have been chosen to receive the ‘Real Estate Personality of the Decade’ award and I think this recognition showcases Minor Hotel Group’s position as a pioneer in overseeing luxury property developments in Thailand,” said the 66-year-old luxury hotel magnate. In Hua Hin, the winner of the Best Residential Development Award went to Ideas 1606 Company for their Veyla ChaAm Beach side Residences, a green low density beachfront development offering outstanding villas and condominiums. Hua Hin’s Highly Commended Awards went to two of Hua Hin’s most popular developments, Orchid Palm Homes and Red Mountain. Also receiving a highly commended was first time entry Smart House. Attended by more than 500 real estate VIPs and top industry leaders – including Dr. Supachai Tantikom, Advisor to Governor of Bangkok, who gave an insightful opening keynote speech on behalf of Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra – the event, organised by Ensign Media, was the culmination of the fair and transparent nomination and judging process spanning the last six months. “For 10 years the Thailand Property Awards, and the entire Asia Property 50

Awards programme as a whole, have demonstrated that excellence and adherence to quality never go out of style,” said Terry Blackburn, CEO of Ensign Media. “The high quality of developments in Thailand has allowed the industry to transform itself from being an emerging market in 2006, to becoming one of the stars of Southeast Asian real estate today, despite certain economic or socio-political challenges.” “Real estate is too vital for the future of the Kingdom, and the Asia Property Awards wouldn’t exist without Thailand,” he added. Presented by Property Report magazine, the Thailand Property Awards 2015 was supervised by BDO, one of the largest accountancy networks in the world, and assessed by a highly respected central judge’s panel, headed by Chairman Sunchai Nuengsit, managing director of BuilderSmart. Acknowledging the efforts of Thai developers in the past ten years, Nuengsit commented: “The developers have more experience and continually improve their projects. They understand the need of the customers and adapt themselves very well despite many obstacles such as instability caused by the political situation in Thailand”. To ensure the credibility of the Awards, Ensign Media had assembled a central judge’s panel consisting of the who’s who in the Thai real estate, architecture and design sectors, which also included the

biggest number of female judges in any of the Asia Property Awards events. The central panel judges were: Bill Barnett, managing Director, C9 Hotelworks Company Limited; Teresa Biesty, managing director, Access Property Limited; Sokoun Chanpreda, managing director, HMD Asia Co. Ltd.; Mark D. Remijan, partner and CFO, Khiri Travel Group; Anchalika Kijkanakorn, managing director, AHMS; Suphin Mechuchep, managing director, Jones Lang LaSalle (Thailand) Ltd.; Dr. Theerathon Tharachai, CFO, Project Planning Service Public Co. Ltd.; and Amanda Ng, technical manager, Langdon & Leah (Thailand) Ltd. Meanwhile, the regional panel heads were: Keith Humphreys, managing director, Keith Humphreys & Associates (for Chiang Mai); Clayton Wade, managing director, Premier Homes Real Estate (for Eastern Seaboard); Russ Downing, managing director, HOT Hua Hin Co. Ltd. (for Hua Hin); Robert Kuprica, senior partner, Huges Kuprica (for Phuket); and Robert Pestello, director of sales, Beach Republic (for Samui).

travel with personal staff there are separate on-site accommodations for them. Veyla Cha Am Residences was developed by IDEAS 1606, a company that was founded by Prapavadee & Chone Sophonpanich. Their first real estate project was launched in 2009 and was located in Kho Tao. Also named Veyla, the project again consisted of villas and condominiums and had the enviable position of being sold out before a shovel ever entered the ground. Loei Province

W

ho says Thailand is only about the beach and the seaside? There exist locations across the Northern part of this geographically diverse nation in which we find the purest of mountain breezes. This month Hot Magazine explores one on them in depth, that being the province of Loei. Loei was believed to have been founded by people from the ancient Kingdom of Lan Na, which reigned for five hundred years between the thirteenth century and the eighteenth century. During that time there was prosperity amongst the villages of Dan

56

October 15 - November 15 , 2015

Kwa and the Dan Sai. The province’s remote location was however a disadvantage to the habitability of these two environments, which inevitably led to the two places succumbing to crippling famines. This led many of the people in Dan Kwa and Dan Sei to what is known today as Loei, subsequently to be proclaimed a province by King Chulalongkorn in at the turn of the nineteenth century. Loei is located approximately five hundred and twenty kilometres away from Bangkok, and can be accessed three different ways. The most common one is by land, in the form of a car or a bus.

If you decide to drive from Bangkok highway number one is the point of departure, also known as Phahonyothin Road, which will then take you there. If you prefer to take the bus and enjoy a stress free and comforting ride, The Transport Co., Ltd. provides buses that depart every day. These can be both air conditioned or not, although the former is really significantly recommended. Getting to Loei takes approximate ten hours by bus, so not having to worry about melting on your seat is a big plus. Are roads in general not your thing? Do you prefer to take to the beauty of the skies? Then you’ll be relieved to know that Thailand’s low cost carrier Nok Air

provides a service twice a day to Loei Airport. Let’s now move onto something more intriguing. The province of Loei has one of the more curious mottos out of all the Thai provinces. It is extravagantly known in full as “City of the Sea of Mountains, Coldest Place in Siam, and Beautiful Flowers of the Three Seasons”. Let us explore this phrase in depth and explain its veracity. We begin with the first segment. Loei is a truly wonderful paradise of mountainous ranges, of which three peaks in particular grab the attention: the Phu Kradueng, the Phu Reua and the Phu luang all stand tall and proud above the skyline of the province

and provide a distinctive identity to it. Let us now look at the next segment. How many places do you know in Thailand to reach temperatures below zero degrees Celsius? Is that even possible? Well if you didn’t know any, now you do: Loei’s winters have often reached the minus two mark on thermometers, thus rightly so, it is indeed one of the coldest places of our otherwise tropical Siamese paradise. Temperatures are not freezing the year around however. Far from it, registers of thirty degrees Celsius are commonly observed during the summer and early spring. In that sense, Loei’s climate can be said to be truly continental.

How about segment three of that motto? Imparting a fringe to Laos through the Mekong River, Loei province is in many ways more like the north of Thailand than the rest of the Isan region to which it belongs. It is a place in which mountain ranges combine with a diverse array of beautiful flora. Amassing itself in and around the aforementioned three mountainous elevations of the region, the diversity of wonderful blossoms and trees is truly a magnificent sight. We find thus a wonderful scenario, above which clouds set and provide the spectacular view of which visitors and locals alike can be fortunate to savour.

October 15 - November 15 , 2015

57

If there’s something that they forgot to include in Loei’s kilometric motto, it is probably “city of the bizarre but decidedly charming cultural ghost mask festival”. It is left to the imagination whether this is because it didn’t want to scare visitors away or because the name was truly getting out of hand. Regardless, this festival is the province’s pride and joy, amassing much of the cultural essence within its populace. Taking place at some point between March and July, once the visionaries and mediums reach consensus over a specific date, the Phi Tha Khon ghost festival extends across three entire days during which a number of ceremonies take place. On the first day the main Ghost Festival, which is called Wan Ruam (day of assembly) and during which the town’s inhabitants ask Phra U Pakut for protection from evil. Phra U Pakut is the spirit of the Mun River, over which he supposedly guards. A sequence of games and activities are then held for the remainder of the day, whilst people wear extravagant and intimidating masks made from coconut leaves and rice husks. These take the shape of grinning demon-like creatures with horns and multiple facial and body ornaments. Ornaments range from the more common wooden bells to the more unorthodox wooden phalluses which are waved around displaying the blessings inscribed on them. This festival is said to have originated long ago, when in 58

October 15 - November 15 , 2015

one of his past lives Buddha unexpectedly returned from a long and arduous journey that had left everybody beginning to assimilate his death. The celebration upon his reappearance was said to have been so clamorous that it awoke the dead from their lethargy. On the second day, elements of the traditional Thai rocket festival are held, in which a number of them are launched to the skies in what is seen as a merit making ceremony. The dances and the mask parades continue throughout the day. Finally, we come down to the third day of this festival, during which everyone around the village gathers in order to listen to sermons and lectures imparted by the more prominent and respected Buddhist monks. Loei is a region that at large has not been gripped by the trends of mass tourism even though it has so much to offer to the visitor. It is equally one of Thailand’s most sparsely populated provinces, which means that if you seek a touch of tranquillity and solitude, it is exactly the place to go to. The Loei traveller will find bliss in the freshness of its mountainous breeze and the quietness of its natural forestland and see side of Thailand he would have never expected to encounter. One can conquer the flat plains of some of the lower hills and bask in the evening dusk light as the sun sets over the trees to conclude a productive and relaxing day. In conclusion Loei is a province one must truly take the time to travel to. Discovering its rich and unique culture whilst simultaneously enjoying the cleanliness and peace of its environment is something that can be truly gratifying to the traveller. Attempt to acquaint yourself over the times during which the Ghost Festival takes place and set your travel itinerary accordingly. You won’t find anything like it anywhere else in the country!

L et’s Stay, Bangkok The Continent Hotel

T

here is a very old saying in the property business that when trying to value a piece of property the 3 most important things to consider are location, location, location. The same can be said for trying to find the best hotel to stay. The location, location, location line came to me as I was writing a Trip Advisor review after a recent stay at the Continent Hotel in Bangkok. The Continent Hotel is endowed with an unbeatable address, that being at the intersection of Sukhumvit and Asoke which is often referred to as the

62

October 15 - November 15 , 2015

“Crossroads of Bangkok”. Located where it is, the Continent is mere steps away from the Asoke BTS Sky Train station & the MRT Subway station so almost the whole city is at your doorstep. Plus, just a few further steps and you’re walking into the Terminal 21 shopping mall which has almost everything a person could want or need. In addition to nine floors of shopping there are also a multitude of restaurants and a great cinema should you feel like taking in a flick. The Continent Hotel offers 153 rooms

and suites featuring six different types and four different themes. Room types include Deluxe, Premier. Executive, Sky, Continent & Suite. Room themes include Ocean, Forest, Desert and Space. Each floor is also named for a City or a Country. We stayed in a Continent room on the 28th floor also known as the Chicago floor. The views of the city were great and being a five star hotel it had all the room amenities that you would expect. There are 3 classes of rooms which come with club benefits although here they call them “Sky Benefits”. Those

HOT MAGAZINE RECOMMEND include their Sky Rooms, Continent Rooms and their Suites. If you prefer to stay in one of their less expensive rooms I highly suggest you pay extra for the Sky Benefits because they are impressive. You can check out their website for the full list of benefits but just a few that I noticed included their complimentary limousine transfer to the airport one way or round trip if you are staying for longer than 3 nights. Complimentary laundry, 2 pieces per day, complimentary local phone calls, an hours use of their Business center meeting room, a complimentary daily

fruit basket and early check-in and check-out. Almost all hotel club floor privileges include two hours of predinner drinks but here it is 3 hours with your choice of beers, premium wine or premium cocktails. For two of the three hours they put out some of the nicest food I’ve had on a club/sky floor. If you book into a Continent Room you get the added pleasure of their complimentary mini-bar. The Continent’s recreation facilities include a swimming pool on the 37th floor offering great views of the city. Right next to the pool you’ll find

their H20 pool bar with tables and sun loungers allowing you to soak in the Asian sun while staying hydrated with their exotic cocktails and icy cold selection of beers. On the same floor you will also find their well-equipped fitness center. In addition to the H20 pool bar the Continent also serves up liquid libations at their Axis and Spin bar located on the top two floors of the hotel (38th & 39th). Axis and Spin is one of the hippest sky bars in town where you can enjoy cool drinks and rhythmic sounds while watching the lights of Sukhumvit

dazzle all around. Connected by a spiral staircase the lower floor is a warm comfortable environ to relax and enjoy a nightcap while the top floor is where you’ll want to be when it’s time to dance and spin the night away. Both floors dedicate one side to a huge glass wall that gives you a 180 degree view of the City of Angels. Every Wednesday night is Ladies night with free golden drinks from 8:30 until midnight. Food is also available at Axis and Spin and they currently have an unbelievable (at least to me) promotion going on. For 999 baht ++ you can not only enjoy a main course and a desert but you can

64

October 15 - November 15 , 2015

also imbibe on free flow of beer, wine and cocktails from 5:30 to 10pm. The Continent’s signature restaurant is Called Medinii. Here you can experience authentic Italian cuisine with an Asian flair. Read more about “Medinii in our Let’s Dine Bangkok” article further in this issue If you need to do a little business while you’re in residence (and your head isn’t hurting too bad from the night before free flow) then you’ll want to head to their GMT meeting rooms on the 33rd floor. With multiple floor plans available they can accommodate as few as 14 in their boardroom and up to 70 people in

their theater configuration. They also have a staffed business center that caters to administrative and secretarial needs. The Continent Hotel definitely deserves a stay next time you’re in BKK. With their full amenities and outstanding dining and drinking promotions there is really no reason to go anywhere else. edinii Italian restaurant is located on the 35th floor of the 5 star Continent Hotel. It is the hotel’s signature restaurant and rightfully so. Before having dinner at Medinii I visited their website so I would know what to expect. I scrolled down to their promotion page and began reading. After reading thru the first promotion I began to have the haunting feeling that my meal was going to be mediocre at best.

October 15 - November 15 , 2015

You see, I’ve always subscribed to the saying that if it sounds too good to be true then it usually is. Medinii’s everyday promotion costs 999++ per person and offers all the pizza and pasta you can eat, plus one selection from their main course menu, plus one selection from their desert menu PLUS free flow of wine, beer or cocktails from 6pm to 10pm. I mentally did the equations and figured at that price the quality of food they serve could only aspire to be marginal.

How wrong I was. There were seven choices of pizza and six choices of pasta and what we had was really good. I mean really good. So much so that I had to stop eating before I wanted to because I knew I had a main course and a desert coming. With the six different pasta sauce’s you had five different types of pasta for it to be served over; spaghetti, penne, fettuccine, angel’s hair and black ink pasta. The Entrée menu had nine selections and I contemplated over the Seabass,

Pork Tenderloin, and their Australian Lamb Shank but it was their Wagyu Beef Short Ribs that finally won out. The beef was slow cooked for 24 hours and came with garlic mash potatoes and vegetables. Tender as you would imagine and extremely flavorful. Desert offered six choices and I settled on the Crème Brulee which was scented with Grand Marnier, Orange Liquor and Madagascar Vanilla. It’s been said I’ve never met a desert I didn’t like and this one certainly didn’t disappoint.

The only downside to the evening was that I had my “limiter” with me (otherwise known as my gf) so I couldn’t take full advantage of the four hours of free flow like I wanted too, but there will be another day… If the promotion above does not excite you rest assured they do have an ala carte menu that you can order from. A quick check on Trip Advisor showed that Medinii ranked 16 out of 663 Bangkok restaurants (as of this writing) and scrolling thru the comments all were very positive.

Medinii is easy to get to as it is just steps from the Asoke Sky Train and Subway stations. I was really impressed with the food, the prices and the spot on service. I will be going back. T

here’s good news for: 1. Londoners who miss London. 2. People who want to go to London but don’t want to go through the ten hour flight business. 3. Anyone who wants to visit a wonderfully established community mall themed in the style of truly authentic English class. Located in Sukhumvit 77’s On Nut, it sits between Soi 37 and Soi 39 and has been open for little over a year now. Truly well thought out, it possesses every major icon (though obviously at a minor

scale) that gives London its authenticity. Pickadaily Bangkok is the new big concept in town! What do you think of when you think of London? Fish and Chips? Say no more. There are a number of establishments themed in London’s typical taverns that will serve you just that. Typical English Earl Grey? You will get that too. A first floor filled with wonderful individual establishments as well as famous chains such a True Coffee means that you will have an array of food and beverages to

choose from during your visit there. What else evokes feelings of London? The Tube? Pickadaily hasn’t quite nailed this one yet, but access through the BTS is the easiest way to get there. Come out through Exit 1 and a short walk thereon will take you right to the location. Alternatively you can also take a taxi, which will take you straight there. As you arrive, you will be greeted by the iconic red, white and blue sign outside all London’s Tube stations.

Another part of London you cannot overlook is the fashion. Pickadaily has an array of boutiques where one can go purchase stylish clothing items both for men and women alike, be it shirts, shorts, skirts or dresses, you can be sure to find it in Pickadaily’s second floor. London wouldn’t be London without the sight of its most renowned structure: the majestic and imposing Big Ben tower clock, which keeps every Londoner aware of the time. Pickadaily couldn’t be any less, and has an imposing (though not as large) clock at the top of the square to make sure everyone is running according to their schedules. Amongst other things one can find there are neatly cut spaces of grass, mazing across the floor in wonderful patterns. Adding to the decoration is a large chess board carved into the floor and neatly alternating black squares with green squares composed of grass. Benches to sit and beautifully paved segmented roads complete the wonderful aesthetics. The finishing touch is a bridge, (no not the London Bridge unfortunately) but an equally charming one that unites one part of the mall with the other All in all, Pickadaily Bangkok is a wonderful concept and community mall in which to spend a sunny afternoon with your family and or friends. We recommend you to go even if the sky seems a little grumpy however, because London wouldn’t be London without its sulky weather! What are you waiting for?
