Dear Reader, Welcome to Issue 5 Volume 3. This month’s issue has a “sports” theme and we start out by taking you to the Hua Hin Regatta which was held towards the end of April. This was the 15th year of this annual event and close to 200 sailors and boats lined the shores to compete. Tack your way over to page 16 for the details. Next up we take you the beach in front of the InterContinental Hua Hin Resort and Spa for the sixth annual Asian Beach Polo Championship. Asia’s only polo tournament played on a beach, the event was looking iffy as a huge wind and rain storm plowed through the polo grounds just prior to its start. The weather cleared however and with it brought cool comfortable temperatures for those in attendance to enjoy this magnificent sport. On Page 18 you’ll find both our daytime and nighttime coverage of this very fun yearly event. On page 24 we’re back to sailing again, this time we take you to our neighbor across the gulf, Pattaya, for the 11th annual Top of The Gulf Regatta which has become the largest multi-class sailing competition in Asia. Our “Let’s Go” feature this month takes us to the paradisiacal islands of Coral and Raja. Located near Phuket these islands offer the true tropical island adventure with white sand beaches, crystal clear water, stunning colorful corral and thousands of vibrant tropical fish, page 54. Bangkok loves its celebrations and we take you to a big one as the city celebrates the 233rd year of Rayanakosin, the anniversary of BKK, that’s on page 62. With that we thank you for picking us up and we hope you enjoy the read.

L ET’S MEET Rick Erdos
1. What is your full name and age? Rick Erdos 49 2. What is your current Job Position? General Manager Hilton Hua Hin Resort and Spa 3. How long have you lived in Hua Hin or been coming to Hua Hin? Arrived in April 2014 4. What did you know about Hua Hin before you moved here? To be honest very little. I was offered the role here at Hilton and after some research about the area my wife and I decided it would be a great location to continue our international journey that first started when we left Australia in May 2005. 5. What do you like most about your profession? I have always enjoyed the relationships formed with the staff whom I have worked within the industry around the world. It is great to look back and realize that if you review your Facebook friends they now come from far and wide. From a business perspective the industry has changed in the last decade or so to be far more financially focused and business savvy. Distribution streams 12
May 15 - June 15 , 2015
have changed with the growth of OTAs, digital etc and as we know everything in life is more competitive today. 6. What do you like least about your profession? Hard to answer that one!... all job roles and professions have their challenges and good and bad days. The hotel industry tends to be in ones blood so we smile much more than we frown! 7. What do you like most about Hua Hin? Such a peaceful and relaxed culture exists which is easily felt when you stroll the streets, head for an early morning bike ride. 8. What is your favorite restaurant and why? Of course I have to say our new Chay Had beachside venue. But jokes aside the team have done a great job with this new venue and now after a few months operation we are seeing some wonderful support from the local Hua Hin community. I cannot think of a better setting for small intimate dinners, special occasions or wedding parties. 9. What do you like to do in your free time and why?
My son loves watching the football from Australia so that’s most weekends taken up. New places for coffee and cakes in the mornings is always an adventure and we love strolling the beach down at Khao Ta Kaib beach 10. What would you recommend to new-comers to do in Hua Hin and why? To explore all the back streets and local cultures that spring up in all places in and around Hua Hin. From the typical fast food commercial outlet to the street food, there is a great vibe all day. 11. Tell us a surprising fact that the public might not know about you? Many may have seen and know I have 2 children here with us here however I also have 2 older daughters that live in Australia. For a young guy I don’t like a father of 4! 12. What is the most outlandish thing you have ever done and why? Have to say I am very conservative guy so nothing springs to mind. Besides the occasional fancy dress event, I don’t recall sky diving off a roof or fighting at Crocodile back in Australia just yet.
Hua Hin’s Anantara opens their Elephant Parade Gift Shop
E
lephant Parade is the world’s largest art exhibition of decorated elephant statues. Created by artists and celebrities, each elephant parade statue is a unique art piece. The life-sized baby elephant statues are exhibited in International Cities. After each exhibition, a number of Elephant Parade Statues are auctioned by a renowned auction house. Elephant Parade was founded by father and son Marc and Mike Spits in 2006. Whilst on holiday in Thailand, Marc met a baby elephant named Mosha who had lost her leg after stepping on a land mine. Mosha inspired Mike and Marc to create Elephant Parade. In 2007, the first exhibition was held in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Since then there have been exhibitions in cities such as London, Milan, Copenhagen, Singapore and Hong Kong. The “Friends of the Asian Elephant” Hospital – Mosha’s home base in Lampang was one of the first organizations to receive contributions generated by Elephant Parade and structurally continues to receive funds for taking care of Mosha who became the first baby elephant in the world to receive a prosthetic leg. More than 800 artists have participated and over 1,000 elephants have been

created; each an original piece of art. Bill Heinecke, the Chairman and CEO of Minor International, which owns the Anantara Resort chain, has big plans for Elephant Parade in Bangkok which will be released in the coming months. According to Bill, “As a company, we are always looking for like-minded partners who share our true passion in saving the Asian Elephant and Elephant Parade has long been known for its Elephant conservation efforts in Thailand…” The Elephant Parade Gift Shop located within the Hua Hin Anantara Resort sells smaller versions of the elephants which are all hand painted in Chiang Mai. Each series is produced in limited quantities and each one is numbered making them a special collectible gift, especially knowing that a portion of the purchase price goes directly to helping Asian Elephants in Thailand. HOT Magazine in partnership with the Anantara Hua Hin Resort will be hosting a charity event to benefit the Elephant Parade project. Hua Hin Sailing Regatta 2015
T
he 15th Hua Hin Regatta took place from April 20th to the 25th. This annual event took place on the beach near the Regent Cha Am Hotel and is held in honour of his Majesty King Bhumiphol Adulyadej, himself an avid sailor in his past. Over 240 competitors in nearly 200 boats lined up on the beach for the Thai National Championships, the most prestigious dinghy sailing event in Thailand. The event is superbly organised by the Royal Thai Navy in conjunction with the Tourist Authorities of Thailand, Cha-Am Municipality and Phetchaburi Province. . The event also incorporates the Thailand Open Championships for the 420 Class. The Championship hosted teams from Thailand and Malaysia in an 11 race series over four days of racing at the Regent Cha-Am Beach Resort in Phetchaburi. The leaderboard unfolded into a battle between the top four teams, and ultimately went all the way to a tiebreak finish between Thailand’s Chaninat Poolsirikot/Piriyaporn Kangkar and Malaysia’s Alif Safares Binazmi/Ikrami Hakimin Bin Nlarkham. Thailand’s Puvich Chanyim/Sarawut Petsiri opened the Championship on form, taking a swift race win, followed

by a 2nd and 3rd to share an early lead on equal points with Nopporn Booncherd/Kittipoom Kamjohn (THA). Day 2 saw the leaderboard shuffle around with Chanyim/Petsiri consolidating their strong opening day with a repeat show to lead by 3 points. The series unfolded with the race wins going between any of the top four teams. By the final day, claiming the Championship win was simply a case of who beat who. Back to back race wins in the closing two races brought Poolsirikot/Kangkar (THA) onto a level pegging with Binazmi/Bin Nlarkham (MAS) and the pair claimed the tiebreak advantage to seal overall victory and National Championship glory. Richard Vine, Hua Hin Sailing Club’s Director scored a succession of 12ths and 13th to finish 13th overall. “Our Club has only been open 3 months and so we were delighted to be able to compete. Now that we are better known and we have more members we are hoping that we will be able to field a much stronger team next year. We are especially looking forward to starting our Saturday Morning Club for junior sailors in the very near future.”

Asian Beach Polo Championship 2015

O
n April 25th, in front of the InterContinental Resort Hua Hin & Spa, the sixth annual Asian Beach Polo Championship took place. Asia’s only beach polo event, teams from Thailand, India, Hong Kong and Macau came together to play polo and raise money for Princess Pa’s Kamlangjai Project. One of Hua Hin’s favorite yearly events got off to a stormy start as a rain squall blew thru the polo grounds just prior to the 2:30 opening. Once the storm passed guests enjoyed the pleasant cool weather which was a far departure from last year’s 45 degree heat.

The day started with a horse parade led by Mr. Harald Link and proceeded to horse racing which guests could bet on with money going to charity. Next up was a fashion show on horseback with fashion’s from leading designer’s including; Longchamp, Emilio Pucci, The Metropolitan, Diane von Furstenberg, La Martina, Silsupa and Chateau de sable. But the big draw of the day was Polo and this year it was Thailand against India in the final. The exciting match was hard fought but after threee Chukka’s, each 7 minutes long, it was Team Thailand who took the trophy with the score 7 to 0. Team Thailand was led by Harald Link with teammates Jean Louis Graindorge and Suphachai Sukhampha. Once again Bangkok’s high society descended on Hua Hin to enjoy the sophistication of Polo. Spotted were His Excellency Enno Drofenik, the Austrian Ambassador to Thailand along with M.L.Poonyanuch Kashemsanta; Anutin Charnvirakul; Panarat Bunnag; Weera Sriwathanatrakoon; Proudputh Liptapanlop; Chanadda Chirathivat; Matunart Sosothikul; Thawin P.Siaotong and many more. The daytime festivities were only half of the fun as that evening there was a great party on the lawn of the InterContinental. The food was plentiful and tasty and accompanied by wine or cocktails. This year’s event saw an oldtime Volkswagen van which had been converted into a bar serving delicious cocktails with terrific flair by the bartenders.

During the evening there was an auction of several paintings. The first one, “Beach Polo was purchased for 200,000 Baht by Khun Suwat Liptapanlop. The second one was of eight horses running along the Hua Hin beach at sunset and was purchased by Norasak Senaveenin with the winning bid of 150,000 Baht. The highlight of the auction though was the last painting which was of the newlyweds His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen

on a train during their first visit to Hua Hin. Raucous applause was given when Harald Link offered the top bid at 250,000 Baht. The 3 winning bidders paid a total of 600,000 Baht that went towards the Kamlangjai Project charity. An evening fashion show was next and then Academy Fantasia 1 winner Pachrapon Jantieng wowed the crowd with songs by Frank Sinatra and Michael Buble and then got the crowd dancing
with his Michael Jackson reportoire. The dancing continued with the DJ who was up next. The price to enjoy the whole day was just 1,000 baht which included free food, drinks and entertainment both during the day and at the night time party. Most people attending have been coming for years and many commented that it was the best year yet, made even better because it was all for charity.
Initiated by HRH Princess Bajrakitiyabha, the Kamlangjai Project, the benefactor for the day, was set up to reach out to women in incarceration to give them the tools and support to better integrate into Thai society. The Asian Beach Polo Championship is organized every year by Khun Suwat
Liptapanlop, former Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand along with Khun Nunthinee Tanner, Thailand’s first female polo player and Mr. Harald Link, Chairman of the B. Grim Group & President of the Thailand Equestrian Federation.

he 11th Top of the Gulf Regatta Presented by Ocean Marina welcomed sailors from around the world, led by a strong Thai and Australian contingent, to compete in what has become Asia’s largest multiclass regatta, held at South East Asia’s largest marina, Ocean Marina. one of the toughest yet. Not only were there top international crews and close racing on-the-water, the conditions proved to be some of the most varied, tricky and challenging in the Regatta’s history. Founded in 2005 the 2015 Top of the Gulf Regatta Presented by Ocean Marina took place from the 30th of April to
the 4th May. Owned and organised by Ocean Property, the Regatta is hosted by Ocean Marina Yacht Club with support from the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, Royal Thai Navy, Royal Varuna Yacht Club and Pattaya City. Cup, competed for by the one-design platu class, and the Thailand Optimist National Championships, which combined make the award-winning Top of the Gulf Regatta one of the most diverse class line-ups in the region. “The fleet shaped up to be one of the most competitive yet with a number of new international entries in the keelboat and multihull classes, including top sailors from Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia, and a number of past champions back to defend their titles ,” said Mr. William Gasson, CoChairman, Top of the Gulf Regatta Organising Committee. The Coronation Cup, established to celebrate the Coronation Date of His Majesty the King of Thailand (5th May) – who himself is a proficient sailor winning the gold-medal at the 1967 SEA Games – saw a near-record line-up with crews from as far away as the UK taking part. “The Coronation Cup is an integral part of the Top of the Gulf Regatta and has grown to become the largest onedesign racing competition in the region. This year’s fleet included some top sailors – both regular competitors and new faces. It is a multi-national fleet with Australians the biggest contingent, and they will be challenging defending champion Scott Duncanson for the Cup,” commented Mr. Gasson. 28
May 15 - June 15 , 2015
Dominated by Thai sailors, including many from the national team, the dinghy and beach catamaran fleets exceeded 50 entries with the Thai competitors up against a strong team from Malaysia as well as sailors from Singapore, Hong Kong and beyond. The Thailand Optimist National Championships is the Kingdom’s second-oldest sailing competition. Celebrating a milestone, its 40th year and a record fleet of over 130 boats. “We have hosted the national optimist championships as part of the Top of the Gulf Regatta since we started the Regatta 11 years ago. Providing a competitive racing opportunity of international standard has helped develop many young Thai sailors who have sailed and won in World competitions recently,” added Mr. Gasson. “The large Thai fleet were up against sailors from Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Myanmar”. After a slow start to the 2015 series, Kingdom Property (AUS) rallied to put in a string of five wins and take a commanding position at the top heading into the final day. With two races planned for the final day, a first in Race 1 secured the title for Kingdom Property’s Scott Duncanson and his crew one race early – the first time ever that the title has been defended and the fourth time in total that Scott Duncanson has won the Coronation Cup. The Regatta has been active in supporting grassroots sailing and youth development since its inception and this year Ocean Marina Yacht Club have sponsored a group of young Thai sailors from the Phuket Sunshine Village orphanage in Phuket, to compete in the national championships as part of the Phuket Youth Sailing Club team.

Thailand Property Awards is back for it’s 10th year
T
hailand’s biggest real estate event returns for a 10th historic year in 2015 with a glittering black-tie gala dinner and awards ceremony at the Plaza Athenee hotel on Wednesday, 16 September. Organised by Ensign Media, Asia’s leading property media company, the Thailand Property Awards showcase the finest developments in the Kingdom. Properties from Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Pattaya, Phuket, Hua Hin, Khao Yai, Phang Nga, Krabi and Samui will all be rewarded at the prestigious gala dinner. “The enormous success of the Thailand Property Awards over the past decade is a testament to the highest standards established by the award-winning developments and companies that have participated since 2006,” Terry Blackburn, CEO of Ensign Media. “The Awards continue to set the benchmark of quality and credibility by which the region’s best real estate is measured.” As ever, the Thailand Property Awards judging process will be the most comprehensive and detailed of any real estate awards in the world. Successful entries — nominated by the public and industry peers — will be assessed by the independent panel of highly-experienced judges who shall conduct thorough site inspections of all shortlisted properties before the final decisions are made, with the entire process overseen by BDO, ones of the world’s largest and most respected accountancy and audited firms. With entries closing on May 15, nominations from the general public and real estate industry have been flooding in since the start of the year and will now be judged by the independent panel judges, supported by site inspection teams from around the country and supervised by Paul Ashburn, managing partner of BDO International.
32
May 15 - June 15 , 2015
“We have clearly demonstrated over the years that it is worthwhile putting an extra effort into our entry and judging processes, as that leads to highly credible winners and public recognition that the shortlisted properties truly do represent the best of the best,” said Blackburn. “The awards are free to enter and decided by a truly independent panel, which ensures only the best of the best are recognised and rewarded.’ According to Russ Downing, Managing Director of HOT Hua Hin Property and Head of the Hua Hin Judging Team for the last eight years, “Hua Hin’s stature in the Kingdom is growing and with it exciting projects are being developed. We’re really looking forward to this year’s on-site inspections. Started in Thailand in 2006, the Asia Property Awards have since expanded to reward developments, consultants, architects and designers in Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, China, and this 2015 have expanded into Myanmar, Indonesia and Vietnam.

HOT AROUND TOWN SLIMHER GYM GRAND OPENING SLIMher recently held a grand opening party for their location on the 2nd floor of the G Resort on the corner of Soi 94 and Petchakasem Road. As the name states, SLIMher is for women who feel more comfortable in a private allwoman work-out environment. SLIMher workouts are just 30 minutes long utilizing High Intensity Interval Training. Aurelie “Aura” Pernel is the owner of SLIMher and belonged to a similar type of gym when she lived in Hong Kong. During her time in the ladies only gym she achieved a 17 Kilo weight loss. When asked if there was someone on staff motivating members thru their

workout Aura said, “Yes definitely! Motivation is one of my main activities along the day, I want my members to feel comfortable about themselves. Cheering them up and pushing them to be the best they can be. It doesn’t matter where they start, what’s important is where they want to go, and I will make sure to support them in that journey.” SLIMher offers programs for women who are looking to lose weight, tone or gain muscle as well as offering nutritional advice. Again according to Aura, “You are what you eat, exercising is only a complement, but what you eat is the most important. It is not
about dieting it is about inserting new habits into your daily routine. Diet by itself has proven over the long term to be unsuccessful in permanent weight control. Proper nutrition, combined with good exercises, is the best way to improve health and permanently change your body composition.” Different packages are available for women who are either living in or visiting Hua Hin. Options include a 1 day pass, 1 week pass, and 1,3,6 or 12 month memberships. info@slimherhuahin.com or www.slimherhuahin.com

HOT MAGAZINE RECOMMEND
Electric Mango
T
his month’s food review took the Hot Magazine team to a hidden food paradise, tucked away off of Hua Hin’s Soi 112. Electric Mango is a quiet venue in which one can unwind and release the stress accumulated across a hectic week, perfect for a Friday night dinner – Particularly if you enjoy steak. We walked in to tranquil lounge music that very gently eased into a soothing Bossanova guitar and complemented the stylish décor of cozy bungalows and comfortable almost armchair-like seating. After letting us enjoy the ambiance for some time, we were greeted by Chef Nom, who became in charge of delighting out palates for the night.

May 15 - June 15 , 2015
We waited for our entrees by nibbling on the complimentary bread and butter, until we were presented with a plate of deliciously confectioned nachos. These were extremely crispy, well balanced and presented a hint of smokiness, smoothened by the sour cream. They had a hint of spiciness and tasted extremely fresh. We then tried the Salmon Tartar, which was an enlightening dish because of its distinct zesty taste. Sour and slightly spicy, the taste of the fish truly permeated across the mouth, with a meaty flavour that complemented freshness. The lobster and crab meat soup was also something to indulge in: it juggled a combination of seafood and defining spice. It had a strong taste that left a very delightful aroma in the mouth.
Once the entrees had been served, we were presented with the main courses, two beautiful prepared steaks, both of which spoilt us for choice. The first one was a classic American Rib Eye, medium cooked it came with an option of sauces and we chose their creamy pepper sauce. The overall seasoning of this dish combined with its tenderness proved to be a highlight. The steak came with a side dish and we chose bacon wrapped asparagus and a baked potato with sour cream. The former was simply presented but elegant and flavourful, with a smoky taste accompanying the distinct taste of the asparagus. The latter was a perfect complement to provide a plain balance and did so very well.
The second steak entree was an incredibly juicy Australian tenderloin cooked medium-rare with a crisp coating and a delicious béarnaise sauce. This sauce topped over the soft meat gave it an absolutely exquisite and unique flavour, gorgeously aromatic and surprisingly coalescing, despite the amount of different tastes. It was tangy all while being creamy and it was gentle but expressive, a truly delightful elaboration. The sides gave the dish a great presence, and I would have to say that the potato gratin really stole the show in this category. It was something truly exquisite: a slightly crunchy shell that one could push through with the fork and a base of molten béchamel cream and finely cut potatoes
that awaited underneath. Overall, an absolutely spectacular dish. To top it all off with a sweet ending, Chef Nom provided us with one last culinary delicacy in the form of a mouth-watering dessert: The Chocolate Lava. It came in a round, compact form on a long concave platter with a scoop of bourbon ice cream that made it very appealing to the eye. We went ahead and dug into it, and watched as the melting white ice cream met the flow of molten dark chocolate at the centre, creating what resembled a Yin and Yang symbol. It was simply gobsmacking. A combination of it all: Chocolate, cream, hot, cold, soft, intense and truly aromatic. As a whole, the experience at Electric
Mango was truly wonderful. The food was of the highest quality for a reasonable price, the ambiance very relaxing, the decoration classy and the waiters attentive. This is a place worth going to with your little younglings too as the grounds are very child friendly with the inclusion of a children’s playground away from the main dining area. A massive 800 square meter swimming pool, currently under construction, will be for pool parties and adults only. Electric Mango is and will be a worthy place to dine and have fun for young and old.

L ET’S RELAX
HOT MAGAZINE RECOMMEND
Anantara Sun Lover Treatment
L
ast year, HOT Magazine had the pleasure of reviewing the Hua Hin Anantara’s enchanting signature massage. This time, we were invited back to try something more appropriate for the season, their Anantara Sun Lover Treatment. As I arrived, I instantly noticed the attentiveness and the care with which I was treated, being immediately served a refreshing bael fruit tea along with a cutely folded lavender scented cold towel, skilfully tucked in the shape of a small ball. The attentiveness continued, as I was asked for the desired pressure and other aspects to personalise the experience to my taste. Before I knew it, I was walking into a beautifully enclosed patio of terracotta coloured walls,
50
May 15 - June 15 , 2015
which led to an elegantly decorated private massage room. Upon getting comfortable, the treatment began with a foot cleanse, in a stylish tub of refreshing lavender scented water with lilac flowers. I was first applied with a honey milk solution to hydrate the skin and subsequently pampered with a peppermint spray to moisturise it. Then ensued the real pleasure: a thirty minute Detoxifying Green Tea Body Polish consisting of a cooling back scrub containing lotus seed, purifying green tea extract, apricot seed, majoram oil, cypress oil, petit grain oil, coconut oil and stimulating shea butter. The scrub began at the extremities, as the masseuse gently refreshed the length of the legs and arms to the sound of entrancing
and relaxing Thai fusion instrumental music. Ever attentive, she always made sure to ask if the room temperature was adequate and the pressure was of my liking. She then proceeded to the main body area and released all the toxins from the skin at the same time that she freshened the surface. When this concluded, I was directed outside to wash off in a beautiful outdoor shower. The attention for detail ensued: the shampoo, conditioner and body gel was heated optimally and I could feel a cleansing sensation as the scrub was washed. Once I was done, the masseuse directed me back inside to proceed with the second part of the spa treatment: an incredibly relaxing one hour coconut
oil massage. She began again by the legs and stimulated the thigh and calf muscles where most of the tension from walking is accumulated. This felt heavenly and is very recommended for those who usually use their legs a lot, be it in day to day life or in sport. She subsequently proceeded to the arms, starting from the top and massaging the biceps downwards towards the hands. As she finished, she moved to another area where stress is routinely accumulated: the shoulders and the back. This caused me to deeply fall into dreamland, as the stimulation of the pressure points immediately made me drowsy. She skilfully moved down the spine and loosened all the tension of my lower back, in what was an incredibly
therapeutic sensation. One could feel the permeation of the oil all along and as the massage ended, I saw the difference in the moisture of my skin, which was now perfectly smooth and silky. The masseuse was gentle to wake me up and allowed me to recover and re-orientate myself as she prepared the end phase of the spa, asking me what tea I preferred in a choice between lemongrass and ginger. As I got dressed, I was directed to the recovery zone in some comfortable chairs beside a beautiful pond, where a warm lemongrass tea awaited me along with a complementing warm lemongrass scented towel bun. Breathing in the intense aroma cleansed my respiratory system, something that was further accomplished by the tea. As if this was
not enough, I was very kindly awarded a complimentary sun lotion mist, which cools the skin and aids the tanning process at the same time. Again, the attention for detail continued until the very end as they offered a satisfaction survey to ensure my experience was optimum. Needless to say everything was ticked on the “excellent” column. I left the spa feeling like a million dollars, ready and refreshed to face more summer days. If you haven’t been there already, you’re missing out. Anantara Hua Hin Resort & Spa 032 520 250

Coral & Racha Island’s
54
May 15 - June 15 , 2015
S
ummer is quickly approaching and with it comes thoughts of holidays. Last month our “Let’s Go” getaway took us to the island of Phuket. This month we go a little bit further to several nearby smaller islands offering turquoise water, soft, fine sand and thousands of colorful tropical fish, that being Coral Island and Racha Island. Located just nine kilometres to the southeast of Phuket, Coral Island is one of the most attractive destinations within the province. Getting to Coral Island is easy, as it is accessible through longtail boat from Rawai Beach or Chalong Pier. If however you prefer
taking a speedboat, it will cut your trip to just fifteen minutes, something more convenient for those who are not too fond of traveling in the water for too long. Known locally as Koh Hae, Coral Island’s beach is the typical stunning, crystalline marvel that is showcased in travel brochures and television advertisements. The beach is divided into two main sections: Long Beach and Banana Beach. Banana Beach is the ideal place to go snorkeling and once you immerse yourself in the blue transparent waters, you understand that the scenery gives legitimacy to the island’s name. Filled with precious and colourful coral
extensions across the seabed, it is sure to provide an unforgettable experience for the avid or amateur snorkeler. The water level is shallow and the fish come in multitudes of colours and species such as the parrot fish, the damsel fish, the needle fish and the surgeon fish are common and easy to spot. You will not have to go far from the beach, as the reef begins just a few metres away from the shore. Long Beach is equally beautiful and it is a place more suited for water activities other than snorkeling. The most popular ones are banana boating, canoeing and speed boat sight-seeing. For a more peaceful discovery, a canoe is an ideal mode of transport for

exploring your way through the stunning scenery. Nevertheless, if you want to go sight-seeing with a panoramic view of the island’s beauty, the best option is to venture the skies by going parasailing, an enthralling experience that combines comfort, breeze, adrenaline and stunning sights: something definitely worthy of the experience! If you feel like taking a break from the water you can try your hand at Batik dyeing at the Coral Island Resort. Batik is a popular activity on Coral Island; it is an ancient technique of colouring clothes used across countries of Southeast Asia. It consists of dyeing the material after having applied sections of wax to it, something that allows the dye to permeate through some parts of the cloth whilst leaving other parts intact.
56
May 15 - June 15 , 2015
When the wax is removed, the shapes of the wax remain stamped in the clothes, creating stunning patterns. A great place to stay on Coral Island is the Coral Island Resort, which is equipped with plenty of amenities and comforts. There are four types of room there, including the superior room, the beach deluxe room, the beachfront deluxe and the family room, all of which are equipped with basic ammenities. If you feel like you have had enough of the salt water, this hotel has its own large swimming pool where. If while you are at Coral Island you feel like changing scenery by exploring other isles, you may make your way to beautiful Racha Islands in which you can partake on a number of exciting
activities. Known locally as Koh Racha, they are divided into two separate landmasses: the bigger one of the islands is Koh Raya Yai (which means big in Thai) and the smaller one is Koh Raya Noi (Which means small in Thai). Both of the islands are destinations for those who are more advanced in the field of snorkeling and they provide more complex but so too more beautiful scenarios to submerge yourself in. The visibility is amazing and you can spot fish at as far as thirty metres. Wildlife of more sizeable proportions are also present there, such as manta rays that hover elegantly above you. Equally, one can obviously go for a beginner’s tour through the island’s cosy waters. Koh Racha Yai is a very curious place. Muslim farmers who work in the fishing industry
mostly inhabit it and can be seen going about their daily errands in their traditional boats along the coast. Koh Racha Rai consists boasts of a stunningly beautiful bay of fine white sand and clear blue water; it is also the area in which all of the accommodation is located, given that Koh Racha Noi is uninhabited. The most famous one of these is the five star hotel The Racha, a classy resort in which one can find all sorts of amenities and luxuries. The island however, is more popular amongst those who prefer to visit it as a day trip location as it is easily accessible. Sadly, day trippers miss out on one of Koh Racha’s most beautiful and unique night activities: stargazing. Because of the relatively small quantity of bars and lights as well as its isolation from polluted areas, Koh Racha’s night
sky flares up with incandescence when the night’s blanket covers it and thus the view is spectacular, highly coveted by the few that know about it. Koh Racha Noi on the other had is solely a day trip island. It is the perfect place to go and find some peace and tranquility. It is mostly composed by rocks and rugged areas so it is ideal for those who enjoy sitting and fishing just as the locals do. However, if you want to escape the crowds that can end up forming in Koh Racha Yai’s U-shaped bay, it is equally a good option. Getting to Koh Racha takes a little longer than getting to Coral Island, where Coral Island is 9 kilometers from Phuket, Racha is 22. As a whole, Coral Island and Koh
Racha are definitely destinations worth spending a good holiday in. If you are looking to explore a large range of coral reefs and partake in numerous water sports with all the amenities of a developed island, the former is the place to go. If on the other hand you prefer taking a relaxing day trip or night time stargaze in a sandy U-shaped bay’s beach, head to the latter. But if you want a bit of balance and prefer to experience everything these cosy islands have to offer, head to both of them and enjoy a fascinating experience. Summer is quickly approaching, so it is time to decide. Which one is it going to be?

Celebration to mark 233 Anniversary of Bangkok

T
his past month of April was a special one for Bangkok, as it celebrated its two hundred and thirty third birthday. Today an Asian icon, Bangkok is one of the most travelled cities in the entire world and represents the success of what has steadily developed to become the hub of ASEAN and other important regional organisations. But where are the origins of this bustling city? How did it all begin? Bangkok was initially a conflation of two cities: Thonburi in 1768 and Rattanakosin in 1782, onto which it evolved after a small fifteenth century trading post grew in size and
overtook this area parted by the Chao Phraya River. In 1782, the Chakri dynasty was established by his majesty the king Yotfachulalok (Rama I) after deposing king Taksin of Thonburi and proclaiming the capital’s formal birth. This dynasty has been the royal lineage of the throne through which have reigned nine “Rama. To commemorate this, Bangkok decided to throw a spectacular celebration, honouring the longevity of the dynasty and providing the perfect platform to showcase all of the culture that has been gathered along its rich 233 years. The celebration began with a one and a half kilometre long

procession in Democracy Monument that extended itself until Sanam Luang. Over two thousand participants took part in what was a marvellous showcase of culture, colour and tradition. Over the space of several days, dancers and artists performed traditional dances from the Ayutthaya to the Rattanakosin periods in order to show the evolution of Thai tradition across time. The highlight was a spectacular Khon dance that was appropriately billed as the world’s largest masked performance, which drew great crowds of people. Speeches were given by experts who spoke about how positively the

city has been evolving and about the contributions each monarch had made to the development of Bangkok. There was a pageant to name cultural ambassadors for each locality followed by a wonderful display of Thai cultural products. Such products included popular dishes such as Som Tam and Pad Thai. This was all ended with the highlight of the anniversary, consisting of a stunning kite festival that displayed the different types of kites that have been made popular in the kingdom. This was displayed through a fight between the Chula kite and the Pakpao kite. Once this was done, stands were opened in which members
of the public were taught how to make each respective kite and were allowed to take it home. Bangkok’s 233rd anniversary was a great success and showcased the very best of the city’s rich culture development across this period. If you missed it, do not worry, as the celebrations are held every year (though not as grandiose) and allow you to immerse yourself in Bangkok’s stunning history and magnificent culture.

This was followed by varied experiences, including a stint as a representative in New Mexico’s first State Legislature and a career decision to become a banker. The hotel did such brisk business that rooms changed hands as much as three times a day, and the dining room was converted into additional rooms to meet the demand. From those humble beginnings the HILTON brand was born. In Thailand you’ll find 5 Hilton’s with the most iconic being Bangkok’s Millennium Hilton which rises up from the banks of the Chao Phraya River. With breathtaking

Sunday Brunch at Millenium Hilton
I
n any big city, such as Bangkok, there are a multitude of choices for pretty much everything. It is certainly true when thoughts turn to dining. Bangkok is a haven for food lovers from all nations. One of my favorite meals of the week is Sunday Brunch and Bangkok’s brunch scene is one of the best in Southeast Asia. After a long week and a busy weekend, a lazy Sunday Brunch with family or friends is the perfect way to relax and chill before Monday raises its ugly head once again. One of the most delicious and diverse, as well as arguably the longest Sunday Brunch takes place at Flow, located within the Millennium Hilton on the riverfront. Here, Sunday Brunch begins at 11AM at their rooftop 360 Bar accessed from the 31st floor. For an hour, as you prepare for the awaiting food-fest, you are served free cocktails and nibbles while soaking in the view of boats transiting the Chao Phraya River and the city of angels beyond.

May 15 - June 15 , 2015
The 360 Bar features two distinct areas: One is a large rectangular open air space covering the entire middle part of the high-rise building and the other comprises an amazing 360 degrees cupola balanced one floor above. Viewed from a distance the 360 bar brings back memories of Spielberg’s “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” as it truly looks as if a gigantic flying saucer had landed on the edge of the Millennium Hilton tower. Brunch starts at 12 and is served at the lobby level, in the all-day restaurant called Flow. What makes this particular Brunch experience so special is that not only do you have all the dining and food choices from Flow, but that you can also choose delicacies from their other award winning dining establishments. This includes the Hilton’s steak restaurant Prime, which for the 8th year in a row was recently recognized as Thailand’s Best Restaurant by the well-known national Thailand Tattler magazine. The beef tartare and the Caesar salad are
signature dishes of Prime and are highly recommended. Another signature item from Prime, which brought a smile to my face, was the Alaskan king Crab legs. The crab was served already cracked so enjoying the sweet meat was effortless. Additional signature items include sea scallops, goose leg confit glazed with lemon and potato cream, slow roasted lamb loin, eggplant and thyme emulsion, roast prime rib, veal orloff, truffle fondue, and Italian soubise. For more Asian tastes there were Thai dishes like ‘som tum poo nim’ (spicy papaya salad) with soft shell crab; ’miang kum’ with cha-plu leaves and ‘hor-mok goong mae nam’ river prawn soufflé. Offerings from the Millennium Hilton’s Yuan Chinese restaurant include delicacies such as jumbo shrimp dim sum; wok-fried Chinese pancakes filled with chives; and BBQ pork. The International Brunch selection is made all the more impressive with
free access to the private Cheese Room - the first of its kind in Bangkok and considered to be one of the best in Asia. The cheese room is air-conditioned and fully enclosed, the reason for which you will understand when you first walk in. At Flow you can gaze out over the river through their large windows. For a relaxing alternative, you can dine al fresco on their riverside lounge terrace. You can hear the live duo of Khun Prode Thanapat and Steve from both areas. Sunday Brunch at Flow lasts from 12 until 3pm, however guests are encouraged to visit and stay until 4 pm at the hotel’s Lantern café where Executive Pastry Chef Urs Rohrbach prepares the sweetest of sweets. A few of Chef Urs’ signature items include Teppanyaki ice cream, chocolate whisky truffle and fresh strawberries, meringue and Chantilly. Various kinds of coffee and tea are also served. This masterful four-hour brunch is priced at just 2,200 net and for an additional 1,000 baht more you can enjoy free flow red, rose, white and/or sparkling wine during your 3 hours at Flow. If after 4 hours of eating and drinking you are still not ready to go home then as a brunch guest you are welcome to use their beach swimming pool to relax while contemplating the drive home. If your mode of travel is the BTS sky train then you’ll be happy to know that the Hilton offers free regular rides on their boat from the hotel to the Saphan Taksin BTS station. f there was a centre of the universe for the backpacking world, it would definitely be Bangkok’s Khao San Road. Incredibly popular amongst the world’s backpackers and Bangkok tourists, this exotic looking intersection of roads is a hub of enjoyable and relatively cheap night life. Located just a little west of the city centre, Khao San Road has continually grown in both popularity and diversity for decades
now. Situated in the Banglamphu area it is just a kilometre or so away from the famous Grand Palace and the Wat Phra Kaew in the Phra Nakhon district. It is a five minute drive (traffic allowing) from the Ratchatewi BTS sky train station so accessing it is not a problem. Do however be wary, as taxi drivers at times charge unsuspecting tourists up to two hundred
baht for a trajectory worth no more than 50 to 60 baht. Khao San Road starts revving up in the early evening as it prepares for the usual night of fun and entertainment. Going on a Friday or Saturday night you’ll catch the party in full swing. If however you prefer to have a more casual or relaxed atmosphere, any other day of the week will do fine.
May 15 - June 15 , 2015

Walking down Khao San Road you’ll find local Thais selling all kinds of food, from traditional Phad Thai to kebab wraps, dumplings and fried rice. There is too, for the audaciously adventurous, a large selection of deep fried bugs and critters. This may not appeal to everyone but hey, they wouldn’t sell them if people did not like them! Be a little cautious of taking pictures though, as some vendors realise tourists’ fascination with capturing a shot of a fried scorpion and thus charge you if your only purpose is to run away with a couple of photos and no purchase. There are endless bars and clubs in Khao San Road that cater to a variety of audiences. Are you in the mood for loud booming bass or do you prefer somewhere quiet to have a few drinks with friends and watch football? Both can be found along with everything in-between. If you want to mix in some shopping (this is Bangkok after all) there is equally a large number of street vendors selling everything from shirts to gadgets. Do not expect to get original branded products here but do expect many curious accessories and clothes with funny messages on them. Whether you are looking for a fun night of dancing or a casual laugh with friends, Khao San Road is definitely set to provide you with the experience of a lifetime. If you are here for a holiday, you cannot leave Thailand without visiting this exotic and fun-filled Bangkok icon.
