indy “Sirinya” Bishop is a Thai-American beauty queen, businesswoman, model, host, actress, and mom. At the age of 18 she represented Thailand in the Miss World pageant. Cindy is an ambassador for Fin Free Thailand and the Camillian Home for Disabled Children as well as Operation Smile & The 7% Project. Cindy has been acting in films and on TV since 1997 and was seen hosting season 4 thru 6 of “Asia’s Next Top Model” TV show. In 2018, Cindy launched a social-media campaign, #DontTellMeHowToDress. The campaign started when she read a news report about a suggestion from the Department of Local Administration of Thailand, telling women to wear modest clothes during the Songkran Festival to prevent sexual harassment. Later Cindy posted a video with her message, “don’t tell women what to wear; tell men to respect women,” that took the internet by storm. Teaming with the Thai Women and Men Progressive Movement Foundation and UN Women, the campaign turned into an exhibition that raised awareness of sexual harassment and victim-blaming in Thailand. Get cozy and turn to page 36 as we re-visit our convo with Cindy and catch up on what’s new in her very busy life. Diamonds are marvelous things. They’ve been called a woman’s best friend. They’ve been sought after and coveted as objects of the most priceless value. They symbolize wealth, status, beauty, and longevity. As Shirley Bassey sang it, diamonds really are forever. This month’s HOT getaway is Phetchaburi, beautiful, priceless, symbolic in all its essence, and valued for its status, just like the precious mineral.
Phetchaburi breaks down into two words: “Phet” meaning “Diamond” in Thai, and “Buri” meaning “city” in Sanskrit. The attribution to this is because of the river Phet, which passes right by the capital of the province. Dig out your comfortable walking shoes and turn to page 44 to see why this little haven is worth all the carrots. John Michael Chambers is a former Hua Hin resident. He is an Author, Consultant, Public Speaker, and Songwriter. If you had run into John and asked him what he does, he’d tell you that he is an activist for humanity. Born and raised in New York, John has travelled and lived in many countries. He is a very perceptive individual who has often taken the road less traveled, which has proven to be a very diverse journey and pathway. John was a successful financial advisor with seven offices in the U.S. and was a radio talk show host. He’s given speeches in more than six states, thirty cities, and three countries. He has also written the music and lyrics to over fifty songs and enjoys playing his guitar. John’s written a book that is available on Amazon; it’s called “Misconceptions and Course Corrections, A Collection of Critical Essays for our Times.” The book was written precovid but is very applicable due to the times our world is in. Settle back in your backyard swing and turn to page 52 to read why Living a Life of Gratitude should be a part of all of our lives. Those are just a few of the stories you’ll find inside this month’s HOT. We hope you enjoy the read.

Reduce Aging With Botox From Veera Clinics
W
hen I was young, I remember my grandmother telling me that inside she felt like a girl in her 20’s until she stepped near a mirror and saw an old woman looking back at her. That statement made no sense to me until I reached my 50’s and began feeling precisely the same. One of the most defining features of the baby boomer generation is our love of youth and our desire to reinvent ourselves. As we grew up, anything having to do with aging was pushed into the background. But if there is one thing we haven’t been able to conquer
16
HOT Magazine
as a generation it’s time, the clock still continues to tick. Thanks to the baby boomers desire to look young and beautiful, beauty, anti-aging and health-related products and services are flooding the market. Market research firm Global Industry Analysts projects that in the U.S. alone, a boomer-fueled consumer base striving to keep signs of aging at bay will push the market for anti-aging products to more than $114 billion this year. Botox treatments are the most commonly performed, minimally invasive cosmetic procedure because they make you look younger. The fact that there is
no incision, scarring, stitches or cuts involved makes Botox much better than other invasive cosmetic treatments. A Botox injection session usually takes just 10-15 minutes for most people and requires little or no anesthesia. For me, the attendant cooled my eyes and forehead with an ice pack. Once I let the Dr. know the area was chilled she would make the injections. The needle doesn’t go deep. I could feel it but the pain was minimal to non-existent. Injections of Botox are suited for people who want to see the benefits of plastic surgery without complications and hassle. Botox is most popular for
minimizing or removing wrinkles around your eyes, mouth and forehead. The effects of Botox are usually noticed in three to five days and last up to six months. So if you don’t like it, you can welcome those wrinkles back. If you like it, repeat the injection process and reclaim your youth once again. Botox is a trade name for botulinum toxin, which comes in the form of a purified protein. Botulinum toxin A is the most commonly used form with a few thousand articles supporting its use in scientific and medical literature. The mechanism of action for botuli-
num toxin A is really quite simple. It is injected into the facial muscles and, within a few hours, it attaches itself to the nerve endings of the motor muscles, thereby affecting the nerve transmission to these muscles. There is no loss of sensory feeling at all during the time that botulinum toxin A is effective. Once these motor nerve endings are interrupted, the muscles cannot contract. When the muscle does not contract, the dynamic motion that causes wrinkles in the skin will then cease. The only reason there are wrinkles in the skin in the first place is because the muscle is moving underneath it, thereby these
are called dynamic wrinkles. Approximately three to five days after treatment, the skin above these motor muscles becomes nice and smooth. The length of time Botox lasts is dependent on various factors including the amount of botulinum toxin A injected, metabolic activity of the patient and lifestyle choices, which may cause the Botox treatment not to last as long. Botox is not the legendary fountain of youth, but it is an inexpensive way (in comparison to cosmetic surgery) to rid your face of those wrinkles you have become accustomed to seeing when staring in a mirror.

The clinic I went to for my Botox injections and can recommend is the Veera Clinic in Phetchaburi. Dr. Penlada Krutkos is the founder and owner of the Veera Clinics which also has two locations in Bangkok. Dr. Penlada received her medical degree from Siriraj Mahidol University.
HM: On top of the time at your clinics you are also a National Director for 3 female pageants; Miss Supermodel Worldwide, Miss Culture Worldwide and Miss Jewel of the World. Can you tell us about this aspect of your life? How did you get involved? Where do you find your contestants?
HOT Magazine had the pleasure of sitting down with the busy Doctor to learn more about her.
PK: It all started when girls started coming to me for aesthetic work because they had dreams to enter beauty pageants. Later on I decided that my Veera Clinic would sponsor women for several pageants, both domestic and international.
HM: Khun Penlada, where did you grow up and what was your childhood like? PK: I was born in Bangkok, growing up in a family with a single mom and my dad’s parents. I loved outdoor sports such as horse riding, windsurfing, cycling, etc… HM: At what age did you know you wanted to be a doctor and why did you choose this profession? PK: I don’t remember the age but I always loved learning and was familiar with hospitals because my mom was a nurse. As a young girl I dreamed to be a nurse too but then as I became older I decided to become a doctor instead. HM: Can you tell us your medical specialty and what services you provide that are most popular? PK: I graduated board certified from the faculty of medicine at Siriraj Mahidol University in the field of Anatomical Pathology. I’ve worked in Aesthetic Clinics since 2005 and established my first Veera Clinic in 2013. Every branch provides various Aesthetic Services which covers all of my customers desires. Popular services include Laser, Botox and Fillers, Rhinoplasty & Breast Augmentation. HM: You are a very driven woman, owning 3 Surgery and Beauty clinics in 2 provinces that you visit weekly. How do you manage your time and are you able to take any time off during the week? PK: My time is divided into two parts, one as a Doctor and two as a Business Executive. I visit every clinic once a week which doesn’t leave much time for other pursuits. HM: Will you stop at 3 or will you open more clinics in Thailand?
HM: What benefit do you derive from being the National Director of these pageants? PK: I feel much happiness to see these women succeed in making their dreams come true. They are great representatives of Thailand and are also “Beauty Ambassadors” for my Veera Clinics as well. I look forward to continuing these projects in the future. HM: We understand that you are also a fan of big bikes. What kind of motorcycle do you own and do you get to spend much time on it? PK: Nowadays, I rarely have time to ride a big bike as my days and evenings are full. But my favorite bikes are the enduro-touring styles like the BMW F800GS & R1200GS and the KTM990AGV. HM: You are a very busy woman. If you could take a month-long holiday starting tomorrow, where would you go and why? PK: I love nature & natural beauty rather than the big vibrant city with crowds of people. If I could have free time for 1 month I’d love to catch the Trans-Siberian Train from China to Russia and the route Qinghai – Tibet, as well as touring in China, Tibet, Nepal & Russia. HM: Thank you Doctor Penlada for your time Veera Clinic 082 365 6599 Veeraclinicthailand@hotmail.com facebook.com/veeraclinicthailand
PK: I plan to open more branches in other big cities in Thailand and would like to open an Aesthetic Hospital in the future.

earching thru the reviews on Trip Advisor for a new (for me) restaurant to dine, I came across the following review; “The restaurant overlooking the gulf of Thailand is a perfect place to visit for amazing views over the sea. On a good day you may almost see Pattaya. The food matches the views. The missus and me shared a Chateaubriand cooked to perfection. The day we visited, they

offered truffle fries as a special. I never had it before, but both of us found it addictive. Prices are not on the cheap side but appropriate. So if you want a (romantic) outstanding dinner, that is your place”. The restaurant they were talking about was Hua Hin’s Beach Café, located next to the beach in front of the yellow high rise building Condo
Chain. Near and opposite to the Bangkok Hospital. With a review like that, we had to give the Beach Cafe a try. We did and were lucky enough to run into the owner, Christian Rasp. Chris showed us their menu and told us they have taken the most popular “specials” over the past few years and incorporated them into their daily menu. We asked him what

his “best sellers” were, and he said that for appetizers, they were definitely the Shrimp Cocktail and their Tuna Salad and Pineapple. For the main course, he said their Australian tenderloin is by far their most popular. Another big seller he said was their Braised Lamb Shank “Ossobucco” where they marinate the meat for two full days. Other popular dishes are their Calamari and Lobster Spaghetti.
We started our meal with a recommendation of Chris’s, which was the Shrimp Cocktail. Chris explained that the cocktail sauce was his personal recipe and contains 8 ingredients, the last being a splash of brandy. The shrimp cocktail arrived and tasted terrific. The shrimp were fresh, cold, firm, and dipped into the cocktail sauce, delightful, with a bit of a kick.
The other Appetizer’s ordered were the salmon salad, which consisted of smoked salmon, greens, and onions all beautifully presented and the Scallops with Spinach in Garlic Butter. Being a big garlic fan, I was not disappointed. The scallops were fresh and the spinach abated just a bit of the bite of the garlic.

Our main courses consisted of their Australian Rib Eye, Ossobucco, and the Lobster Spaghetti. My Rib Eye was grilled on their BBQ, mildly seasoned and was cooked to perfection. There were many choices of sides and sauces. I chose a jacket potato and a pepper sauce to accompany my steak. The Ossobucco, a classic Milanese dish, after being marinated for two days and cooked in a rich broth that included tomatoes and wine was full of flavor and amazingly tender. After tasting the Lobster Spaghetti, it was easy to see why it was one of the Beach Café’s best sellers. Tender chunks of Rock Lobster in a tomato parsley sauce over pasta al dente, Splendido! The beach Café is also open for lunch with a full menu. It is the perfect place to while away the hours with great food, a glass of wine or a cold beer while you enjoy the ocean views and take in the sights of the Kiteboarders who are flying right in front of you. For those who would like to have a party on the beach but don’t want to pay the 5-star beachfront hotel prices, the Beach Café is available for private parties in any budget range. Weddings, company parties or anniversary parties on the beach are all happily arranged. Recently they catered a wedding for 150 guests with a beach Chapel in front of their restaurant.

It is the unfortunate norm that if you have a view restaurant, the food is usually not that great, it’s the view that sells. And the restaurants with the most fabulous food don’t often have the most beautiful view. At the Beach Café however, the spectacular view and fantastic food are perfectly united. ith Covid 19 shutting down international arrivals at Suvarnabhumi, Thailand’s International Airport, you would think the Real Estate Market in Hua Hin would be taking a big hit. The reality, though, Hua Hin has seen an explosion of property buyers, with most coming from Bangkok. After spending several months in a Bangkok Condo during the Covid lockdown, there is a new wave of buyers seeing the benefits of having a

holiday or a holiday/future retirement home in Thailand’s Royal Beach Resort city. And why not? Living in Hua Hin is like being on a continual holiday. Granted, Covid has delayed or canceled the usual big events Hua Hin celebrates every year, like the Asian Beach Polo Classic in front of the InterContinental Hua Hin Resort, and the annual Hua Hin Jazz Festival. Still, they will return after we get on the other side of Covid 19. In the meantime, there are still so
many exciting things to do, interesting places to go and new restaurants to try. And for Bangkok residents, Hua Hin is a quick couple of hour drive away. Living in a resort city, there are many businesses that cater to visitors, to the benefit of Hua Hin’s residents. The billion-baht Vana Nava Water Jungle is a good case in point, but it’s not our only water park, we also have the Black Mountain Water Park and Wakeboard Lake. Additional water fun includes the many kiteboarding schools where
you can learn this exhilarating sport from trained experts, jet ski rental, and banana boats. On land, you have ten excellent golf courses, Go Carts to race, elephants to ride, quad bikes to tour, horse’s to gallop, fun runs, marathons, and a gun range to test your shooting skill. Additional fun things to do in Hua Hin include the Cicada Market open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The Cicada Market was created as a me-
dium of connection to artists, creators, designers, tourists, students, and the community. At the center, there are two white buildings with raised floors that serve as a venue for art exhibitions, called Cicada Art Factory. Exhibits feature young artists as well as those from further afield. An amphitheater-style venue provides a form of entertainment designed to educate as well as to amuse visitors. Visitors can enjoy entertainment performed by bands, dance troupes, or theater groups.
The food zone called Cicada Cuisine is where visitors can choose from a wide variety of local and international delights. Here you’ll find grilled seafood, grilled pork satay, Pad Thai, Fried Mussels Thai Style, Chinese noodle, Korean B.B.Q, various forms of rice-based dishes, American and Italian pasta dishes, and variety of desserts. Also, many choices of drinks are served both alcoholic and non-alcoholic.

Just next door you’ll find the Tamarind Food Market that is open Thursday thru Sunday. Tamarind has become as popular, if not more, than the Cicada Market for tourists and locals alike. For shopping, Hua Hin is blessed with the BluPort Resort Shopping Mall. A partnership between Bangkok’s Mall Group ( Em Quartier, The Emporium, Siam Paragon) and Proud Real Estate. This 5 billion baht shopping mall is on par with some of the best you’ll find in Bangkok. Hua Hin’s original shopping Mall, Market Village, also remains immensely popular and attracts big crowds.

Seenspace in the North of Hua Hin is another great mixed use venue offering a beachfront location where you can shop, dine, drink and even swim in their beachfront swimming pool. Additional annual events in Hua Hin that will happen after Covid include the WTA Thailand Open Tennis Tournament, the Hua Hin International Kite Festival, our Golf Festival which runs from August thru September featuring deep discounts on green fees at all the great courses, Classic Car Shows, The Hua Hin Regatta, the Hua Hin International Cricket Sixes, the Hua Hin Food Festival, Hua Hin Bike Week and much more.
Again, after Covid, the Hua Hin – Pattaya Ferry will return with daily trips back and forth. In just two hours you are in a different city with new restaurants, shops, many golf courses, the Thailand Polo and Equestrian Club and plenty of big events like the annual International Fireworks Competition. In August, Air Asia will start flying to Chiang Mai and Udon Thani out of our Hua Hin Airport and to Kuala Lumpur 4 days per week once international flights are allowed again.

When it comes to buying a property in Hua Hin, there are plenty of housing developments to choose from that are built to western standards and in all price ranges. The same can be said for condominiums. Studio condos can be had for under 2 million all the way up to 111 million for a beachfront penthouse. The resale market is also quite active with houses and condominiums in all price ranges. In many housing developments, your monthly maintenance fee covers your pool cleaned twice a week, and your garden looked after multiple times a week. Many Hua Hin companies also offer this same service. As a foreigner you can own the house and lease the land for up to 90 years with guaranteed renewals. A foreigner can also own a condominium as long as the majority of the units are owned by Thai’s. Hua Hin is a vibrant, exciting city while at the same time retaining its laid-back beach lifestyle charm and it truly benefits from its proximity to Thailand’s capital, Bangkok.

HM: Cindy, many people when they first meet you, don’t think you are Thai, they think you are Farang. Why is that? CB: Well, for one I have blue eyes! That and the fact that I only have 1/8th Thai blood (My grandmother was half Thai) But since I was born and raised here, I only feel Thai. HM: What was your childhood like and where did you grow up? CB: I had a wonderful childhood in Pattaya. When I was growing up, it was a quiet but rapidly growing beach resort. I spent most of my childhood years playing on the beach or exploring under the water as my father owned
38
HOT Magazine
one of the first diving operations in the region. HM: At the age of 18 you won the Miss Thailand World competition and then went on to compete at the Miss World Pageant in India. As a little girl did you dream of representing Thailand in the Miss World Beauty Pageant or did this goal come later in life to you? CB: No, I never dreamed of being a beauty queen. I did love to model and perform though, so when the opportunity presented itself as soon as I graduated from high school, I went for it! HM: To compete at that level re-
quires huge determination and discipline. Where did that come from? Was it instilled at a young age? CB: Yes, my father always instilled in me how important it was to have a good work ethic and self-discipline. My parents always told me that I could be anything I wanted to be, but that I would have to work hard to achieve my dreams. And that’s the same thing I tell my children now. HM: You graduated from the Bangkok University, majoring in public relations. At that time, did you see yourself moving into the corporate world or were your aspirations different?
CB: Not really. I don’t think I’m cut out for the corporate world to be honest. I much prefer to have the freedom to create and be my own boss, hence my various entrepreneurial projects. The degree was more of an asset to have in my field of entertainment work. HM: You have many accomplishments, one of them being a Supermodel. Did the modeling come after the Beauty Pageants or before? CB: Modeling has always been my first love. I remember putting on my own one-girl fashion shows for my parents’ guests at our house parties, so there was definitely a dream there, although I didn’t know it at the time. HM: Most people know you from your acting, both in Movies and on Television. Did acting come naturally to you or did you attend an acting school or classes? CB: Again, with most things in my life and career, I was pretty much
thrown into acting and had to learn as I went. My first role on TV was a sit-com series for Channel 3 where I played a witch in disguise (think I Dream of Genie but instead of a bottle I had a broom) I’ve been very lucky to have had the chance to work with the A-listers in the industry, so it was a chance to learn from the best! HM: Of all the parts you’ve played in film and on TV do you have a favorite role, one that you enjoyed playing the most and if so, why? CB: My favorite role to date would have to be “Lily van der Woodsen” in the Thai adaptation of Gossip Girl. It was so interesting for me to be able to portray such a well-known character, loved all over the world, but in a totally different language and culture. HM: For two years, you hosted the very popular TV show “Asia’s Next Top Model.” How does acting in a reality TV show differ from playing
a character in a drama, and which do you find more challenging? CB: They are extremely different. For one, I’m not “acting” on ANTM. True, there are some scripts I have to follow, but that’s mainly for me to describe the rules and details of the various challenges the girls will have to face that day, or when I have a message to deliver via “Cindy Mail”. Everything else is real and unscripted and happens on the spot. How I am ultimately portrayed, depends on the editors. I do play up my Tiger Mom persona at times when needed to get my point across but pretty much what you see is what you get on the show. I would say it is more challenging than playing a character in a drama, as the emotions are real and can be very strong for everyone involved.

iamonds are marvelous things. They’ve been called a woman’s best friend. They’ve been sought after and coveted as objects of the most priceless value. They symbolize wealth, status, beauty, and longevity. As Shirley Bassey sang it, diamonds really are forever. This month’s hot getaway is beautiful, priceless, symbolic in all its essence, and valued for its status just like this precious mineral. If you’re curious about how to connect a province to this grand prize, do read on. Phetchaburi breaks down into two words: “Phet” meaning “Diamond” in Thai language and “Buri” meaning “city” in Sanskrit. The attribution to this is because of the river Phet, which passes right by the capital of the province. The River Phet, which sees its source at the Kaeng Krachan National Park, is an icon of this province and leads to the Gulf of Thailand, where it disembogues at Baan Leam. But before going into further detail, it would be fitting to describe the history of this province. Phetchaburi began its date with history during the eleventh century, a period where the region was ruled by the Khmers and saw the arrival of its first settlers. These settlements how-
ever, were at best temporary or passing points until it was transformed into a key logistical port linking Ayutthaya to the Andaman Sea. The Burmese were aware of the area’s strategic value and were quick to launch several invasion attempts, which were all repelled by the Thais. The area thus became a cultural symbol, with plenty of valuable ornamentation telling the story of its rich past. It gained additional prestige upon the strategic relocation of Siam’s capital from Ayutthaya to Bangkok, where it attracted the interest of King Rama IV, who made it his retreat destination for years to come. The hilltop palace that he frequented, Phra Nakhon Khiri (known more commonly as Khao Wang, meaning “Hill with a Palace”) was completed in 1860 and is today part of the Thai National Museum and the surroundings were officially named to be a historical park in 1979. Phetchaburi is situated in the southern stretch of Thailand. It borders the province of Ratchaburi in the north, the province of Samut Songkhram in the northeast, the Gulf of Thailand in the east, the province of Prachuap Khiri Khan in the south, and the Burmese region of Tanintharyi.

With eight administrative divisions, the most popular three are Mueang Phetchaburi, Cha-Am, and Kaeng Krachan. The first is, as mentioned earlier, the capital of the province. It is famous for both the river that gives it its name, and by the originality of the desserts that are famously confectioned there. One is a type of custard made with Mung Beans, coconut milk, and duck eggs that goes by the name of Khanom Mor Gaeng. An absolute delicacy that is now available throughout the country, nobody forgets that its origins lie at the heart of this city. Cha Am is another favourite attraction in the province. A beautiful and marvellous little beach town, Cha-Am is frequented by a large number of tourists throughout the year due to its easy accessibility from Bangkok through Phetkasem Road and the quality along with the relative quietness of its sandy beach. High-end resorts include the So Sofitel, the Regent, Springfield, and the Sheraton, all of which attract many tourists and locals alike, especially during the high season. ChaAm is also a mere twenty-minute car ride from the city of Hua Hin, which has a vast array of hotels in which to stay.

The other district, which we briefly touched on earlier, is Kaeng Krachan. Kaeng Krachan’s status as a district is relatively young, gaining such denomination solely in 1988, and being granted the rights of a full district in 1993. The main attraction of this area, which is arguably also one of the main attractions of the province, is the Kaeng Krachan National Park, one of the top ten national parks in Thailand. The Kaeng Krachan National Park is a stunning artifact of nature. Combining beautiful scenery with the accessibility and conservation requirements throughout its 2,900 square kilometres, it is a place entirely worth spending a day or two exploring in its entirety. It is the source to two main rivers, the first as we mentioned, gives its name to the province, and the second is the Pranburi River. The Phetchaburi is sectioned by a dam built in 1966, which creates a lake covering a stunning forty-six square kilometres. Established in 1981, it was at the time the twentyeighth national park in Thailand, and it was further enlarged in 1984 to include the boundary between the province of Prachuap Khiri Khan and that of Phetchaburi. The national park, which has been included in the list of ASEAN Heritage Parks, was equally proposed to UNESCO as a potential future world heritage site. The park possesses incredibly rich flora and fauna, including fifty-seven types of mammals, four hundred species of birds, and both tropical and sub-tropical plants and flowers.

If you are someone who enjoys temples and caves, Phetchaburi will definitely please you in that sense. Apart from the ancient Khao Wang royal palace, the Khao Loung Caves are marvellous in their own right. One of the country’s most remarkable cave shrines, it is accessed through a set of inclined stairs. During your descent, it is impossible not to be awe of the large collection of stalactites that majestically cling to the top of the cave. The centre is captivated by the figure of a Buddha, upon which shines an almost magical glow of light through the open-aired façade whenever the sun shines down on it, as this refracts and illuminates the rest of the cave. The second cave possesses an imperious tree of three hundred years of age, which can be seen rising above, contorting and twisting its roots as it glistens from the rays of light that shine through its thick foliage. At large, Phetchaburi is one of the most fascinating provinces in Thailand. Whether the objective is to explore the deep historical richness of the area or to discover the marvellous flora and fauna of Kaeng Krachan, the place will be short of neither. And of course, don’t forget the attractiveness of Cha Am’s fantastic beaches. If you have yet to visit Phetchaburi, you can be assured that your journey will be worth your time.

Be kind to one another At the end of the end, as we shuffle off this Earth, it matters not how much money you have, or any of your worldly possessions. What will matter most is how you treated people along the way and the quality of richness in your life’s relationships. Were people better off having known you? Did you have a positive impact on the lives of others? These things matter most. What did you contribute to life and living? Be kind to one another. If we all applied the simple statement of being kind to one another, we would, of course, transform the world and the way in which we live. We may not be able to change the world overnight, but we can certainly change the world around us, our circle’s influence, and our intimate circles of life. And we can do this right now, today. So what are you waiting for? Kindness is like a solvent. Being kind can calm the fear, anger, frustration, despair, or whatever the case may be. It can defuse a crisis or prevent a potential nightmare of sorts. It introduces calmness into any situation. Being kind makes people feel good. Who doesn’t want to feel good? It’s courageous to be kind, especially when the circumstance before you are most challenging. Kindness is contagious, therefore it also invites an act of kindness in return. Remember, to the world you may be one person but to one person you may be the world. Be kind to one another. Never forget how fragile we really are, especially in times like these.

Happiness, The goal of life Some would say this is the goal of life. In the humanly sense, to a large extent I would agree. We are all striving to be happy. Joy and pleasure come from that bliss of connectedness that is the soul, our spirit, which you can feel deep inside. You get it from that connection, not from money, and when you have that connection you will feel it, and there will be smiles and laughter. These are the reflections of the moments that really count! I have seen people in my travels that are very much less fortunate than others, yet they are some of the happiest people you will ever meet. Much can be learned from this. Perhaps contentment with what you have, a loving family, good friends, or perhaps faith? Conversely, I have seen people with extraordinary wealth and opportunity and some of
them are among the meanest, nastiest, most shallow people who are very far south of an inkling of true happiness, and from this there is also much to be learned. Possibly the reality of greed, selfishness, corruption? Now of course that is not to say that the wealthy and more fortunate are all like this, some are very caring and giving people and are happy as well as in the case of the less fortunate, where some are very unhappy. Since happiness seems to be the goal of life, something we all would like to have and sustain, let’s look into this a bit. We know one thing for sure, money and material things do not create happiness. “Trying to be happy by accumulating possessions is like trying to satisfy hunger by taping sandwiches all over your body” – George Carlin. So, what is happiness? As you look around, you can find all different
kinds of definitions for happiness. Here are some of the basic examples of which some, I believe, really do not equate to happiness but can contribute to happiness. They are: good fortune, prosperity, a state of wellbeing and contentment, joy, and a pleasurable or satisfying experience. Wikipedia defines happiness as “a mental or emotional state of well-being characterized by positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy.” It is of such fundamental importance to the human condition that “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” were deemed to be unalienable rights by the United States Declaration of Independence. The United Nations declared March 20th the “International Day of Happiness” to recognize the relevance of happiness and wellbeing as universal goals.”

I would further define happiness as not only freedom from suffering, freedom from fear, freedom from want and need, but also a feeling of pleasant contentment and fulfillment on a cellular level, physically, spiritually, and mentally at varying levels or degrees. You know, as I think about this, it seems worthy of our time to briefly explore the obstacles to obtaining happiness so perhaps we can overcome these to at least some extent with the hopes of obtaining more happiness. If it were only so easy to attain happiness like that pop song says by the artist Bobby McFerrin, back in the 1980’s “Don’t Worry, be Happy.” Maybe it is? Let’s have a look at this. So how to obtain more happiness? For starters, we need to recognize truth and then identify and overcome barriers and obstacles. It is important whom we surround ourselves with, whom we choose to have in our circles. Your life was not intended to be an unhappy one. It was not intended to be one of scarcity, pain, and suffering; these are the intentions of others. Your intention can override this, so don’t buy the lie; this can end today. We might start out by reassessing ourselves, who we are, and how we operate. It seems we can be somewhat habitual, then we kind of get on autopilot with such habits. Take a look at the non- optimal habits and replace them with more optimal ones. For example, being healthy, eating right, and exercising. Being honest with oneself and others and kind to one another and perhaps performing random acts of kindness by spreading a sparkle of your light, love. Being charitable and helping those in need. I find that operating with high integrity, encompassing more than just ourselves, and applying the “doing unto others as you would have them do unto you” rule, are all steps that can lead to happier moments. Having a small, close circle of friends is a true treasure but not to be
solely relied upon for your state of happiness. Maintaining independence and self-reliance is grounding and actually contributes to sustainable friendships. I also find the space around us to be a contributing factor, so cleaning up the clutter and being competent in everything we do might be beneficial. You know, clean hands make a happy life? Cleanliness is next to Godliness? All of these things are like putting order in and carrying on at a more elevated level of decency and survival – it feels good. Being competent and productive and having a purpose in life is grounding and uplifting. Keep abreast of critical information from credible sources. Turn off the negative junk food news, junk television, junk movies, and junk music, etc. Be selective about who and what you expose yourself to. Don’t think in terms of scarcity; life is meant to be abundant. Put yourself in a state of joy. Do the things that make you feel good and be with people that make you feel good. Go to places that make you feel good. Experience what you do and have in life that makes you feel good. And stand very far away from gossip and if it reaches you, let it end there. Gossip is very unproductive and does not contribute to your desired state of happiness; it’s like a cancer. Remember again the Bobby McFerrin song “Don’t Worry, be Happy” and Pharrell Williams’ huge hit called “Happy.” Why were these songs such big hits? One reason is that the simple, pleasant message about happiness, is something we all desire, and not just situationally, but rather for sustainment. So by applying the K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Sweetheart) concept, you can be with people you like and do the things you enjoy. Stop and smell the roses along this journey. In this lifetime we are born and we will die, so in between we better have some enjoyment, wouldn’t you say?

Don’t worry be happy! As we go through the days of our lives, there are moments and periods where we all struggle. You know, when things are just not going right whether it be financial, relationships, depression, loneliness, etc. Try this: take a long walk somewhere nice, be it your favorite park, the beach, or any place you enjoy and simply look around at the beauty that surrounds you. Then find some alone time and look at all the things in your life that you do have and that you are, and should, indeed be grateful for. Perhaps say them out loud or write them down, but most importantly feel it sincerely, whatever it is. You may be grateful for a good family, your beautiful children, for the job you have, or for your good health. You may be grateful for happiness that nature brings you. You may be grateful that you woke up that day! Whatever it is, be grateful. Each and every day acknowledge what you are grateful for. This can be as simple as the pleasure you had from eating a slice of pizza, or that strong cup of coffee in the morning or the fact that the Yankees won yet another World Series! Things will change in your feeling world when you have an attitude of gratitude. Simple, yet true. Okay, so now what is gratitude and why is this so powerful and so important? Like happiness, gratitude can be defined in many ways. Wikipedia spells it out this way: “Gratitude, thankfulness, gratefulness, or appreciation is a feeling or attitude in acknowledgment of a benefit that one has received or will receive. The experience of gratitude has historically been a focus of several world religions and has been considered extensively by moral philosophers.

Gratitude, in many ways, can help you to achieve success. It is also a way to help one put things into perspective so it is not just about “I, me, mine” and puts selfishness where it belongs (out of the picture all together). Also, when we fall on hard times or experience some tragedy or when we are affected by the worldly events which wear and tear us down (knowingly or unknowingly), gratitude helps you appreciate every moment and every good thing in life.
ing, reactive, and ungrateful garden variety grown human being, to an aware, kind, productive, and grateful spiritual being. Gratitude helps to set us on a much needed course correction and helps to put us on a path of a more purposeful and meaningful life. And this, my friend, is critical as this leads to more contentment, which is a component of happiness. And since happiness seems to be the goal of life, I would consider gratitude as an important step to achieving happiness.
Gratitude can help open up your heart, and when this happens many new doors and opportunities seem to arrive daily at the doorstep of your life. What I have observed about gratitude is that it changes your perspective about life. You are able to be thankful for the beauty that surrounds you. We shift how we operate in life away from the human and more from the spirit within – from perhaps being an unaware, unlov-
Each day I strive to practice an attitude of gratitude and again, we are creatures of habit so to speak. Change your habits – change your life! Each day consider upon awakening and before sleeping, writing down or vocalizing (and feel it in your feeling world), all that you are grateful for. Go ahead and try this. Your thoughts and feelings have much to do with your happiness. So when things seem troublesome or desperate, har-
monize your feeling world. One way to do this is through appreciation and gratitude for all good things in your life. We don’t need to do this just once a year at Thanksgiving. Try it daily; you will see and feel a difference. Gratitude can open your heart and once this happens, you have opened the door to all kinds of possibilities. Hilton Hotel Sukhumvit 24
I
t’s been my experience that one of the big differentiators between a 4 and 5 star hotel is the level of service you receive from the hotels staff. Four-star hotels provide quality service to patrons, frequently offering extras such as child-care services, poolside food service and a concierge to assist with making reservations or getting tickets. The staff at five-star hotels go out of their way to personalize each of those guest services, using the guests’ names and anticipating each guest’s needs.
