he 2020 WTA Tour is the elite professional tennis circuit organised by the Women’s Tennis Association. The 2020 WTA Tour calendar comprises the Grand Slam tournaments supervised by the International Tennis Federation, the WTA Premier tournaments, the WTA International tournaments, the Fed Cup, and the year-end championships. Also included in this year’s calendar are the Summer Olympic Games in Japan. For the second consecutive year, Hua Hin recently hosted the WTA’s Thailand Open, which saw world-class women tennis players and rising stars compete for both the Singles and the Doubles titles with prize money totaling USD 275,000. One of the big winners of the WTA Thailand Open was breast cancer awareness with centre court, and the overall event turned a splendid pink for the whole tournament. Organisers committed a minimum of THB 1 million from ticket sales would go to a Thailand based breast cancer charity, and an additional $20,000 USD’s was pledged from supporters. Search out your racket and shoes and turn to page 36 to see how the week-long event played out. It’s no surprise that people make assumptions about you based on what you are wearing and your general appearance. What is astonishing is how quickly they do it. Psychologists call it “thin-slicing.” Within moments of meeting, people decide all sorts of things about you, from status to intelligence, to conscientiousness. Career experts say it takes just three seconds for someone to determine whether they like you and want to do business with you. Fortunately, you have some control over the way others see you. For example, wearing tailored clothes and looking at your conversation partner in the eye will generally create a more positive impression. But as for how aggressive you seem, that’s largely determined by your facial structure. Turn to page 56 to see what are some of the assumptions people are making about you, sometimes accurate and sometimes less so, based on first impressions.

In 1851 a radical looking schooner ghosted out of the afternoon mist and swiftly sailed past the Royal Yacht stationed in the Solent, between the Isle of Wight and the south coast of England, on an afternoon when Queen Victoria was watching a sailing race. As the schooner, named America, passed the Royal Yacht in first position and saluted by dipping its ensign three times, Queen Victoria asked one of her attendants to tell her who was in second place.” Your Majesty, there is no second,” came the reply. That phrase, just four words, is still the best description of the America’s Cup, and how it represents the singular pursuit of excellence. The America’s Cup, the pinnacle of yachting, was first contested that year in 1851, making it the oldest trophy in international sport, predating the modern Olympic Games by 45 years. The trophy’s roots date back to when a syndicate of businessmen from New York sailed the schooner America across the Atlantic Ocean for the World’s Fair in England. The schooner won a race around the Isle of Wight against a fleet of British yachts to claim the £100 Cup. From there, the United States embarked on what would become the longest winning streak in the history of sport. A 132year stretch saw boats representing the country successfully defend the trophy 24 times from 1870 through 1980—until 1983, when Australia II became the first successful challenger to lift the trophy from the Americans. By now, I hope you have your deck shoes handy. Slip them on and turn to page 72to read how the sport of sailing has evolved from sailing on the water to flying above it. Those are just a few of the stories you’ll find inside this month’s issue. As always, thank you for picking us up, and we hope you enjoy the read.

Thailand Tourism Forum 2020 The ninth edition of the Thailand Tourism Forum took place on Monday January 20th 2020 at the Grand Ballroom of the InterContinental Hotel in Bangkok. Jointly hosted by The American Chamber of Commerce – Thailand (AMCHAM) and C9 Hotelworks, this year’s theme was, “BANG BANG”. The two-hour event focused on the critical issues facing Thailand’s tourism and hospitality industries. Setting an adrenalin pumping pace, the fast and furious forum featured a series of brilliant blue-sky thinkers, including Bill Bensley who is affec-

tionately known as the Willy Wonka of design for the incredibly unique storytelling hotels he has created around the world Other speakers included Jesper Palmqvist, Area Director for Asia Pacific at STR, the hotel industry analysts and benchmarking company, Bonn Paramacharoenroj, Associate Director of Business Development for YOO Worldwide, who urged Thailand to cash in on the cannabis tourism revolution, and Khongchanok (A-care) Paepipatmongkol, Innovation Project Manager at Fuchsia MuangThai Life Assurance, who discussed crossindustry collaboration, and how the Thai tourism industry can enhance the
customer experience by working with other industries. Driving the conversation however, was Bensley, who shook up the crowd with his vision for 2050. “The key question is: do you want your children and grandchildren to live on a scorched planet, where the forests have been destroyed, the sea is full of plastic, the air is poisonous and wildlife has collapsed? Or do you want to work towards a fresher future, where buildings breathe, everything we eat is organic and the natural world flourishes? You decide...,” he said. To help hoteliers and developers

embark on their path towards a cleaner tomorrow, Bensley also used TTF 2020 to launch his white paper, “Sensible Sustainable Solutions”, which includes a series of practical ideas and suggestions on how to make hotel business greener and help fight climate change. STR’s Palmqvist revealed the data behind the decisions; according to STR there are more than 50,000 new hotel rooms on the way in Thailand, including 15,000 in Bangkok alone. This development surge will put huge pressure on land and resources in the country. A series of other young speakers, including Khun Bonn and Khun A-care, highlighted how niche tourism
concepts can help Thailand achieve positive and sustainable growth, in line with the world’s top social and traveller trends. “What will the world look like in 2050? It is a question we ask a lot, without seriously considering the answer. But this is no longer some distant future; 2050 is as close as 1990, and considering the widespread environmental destruction we have caused in the last 30 years, we need to stop greenwashing and start figuring out some real solutions. But the fact that this is such a massive problem doesn’t necessarily mean we need big solutions – we can all make a difference on a small
scale. It just needs a collective will. Together we can build a better world,” said Bensley. “While Thailand continues to focus on the elusive target of 40 million international visitors, the industry continues to cannibalise itself by degrading and destroying the very environment that makes it so attractive. Alarm bells are ringing and we want TTF 2020 to be the wake-up call the country needs to stop it sleepwalking into disaster,” said Bill Barnett, Managing Director of C9 Hotelworks, the co-organiser of TTF 2020. www.thailandtourismforum.com

Within two issues, the title changed to Thailand Property Report and the readership focus shifted to investors who sought to capitalize on the booming resort and luxury condominium market that saw a period of unprecedented growth between 2004-2008. During this time, the magazine grew to a 126-page, perfect bound publication and became the bestselling real estate magazine in the country while
expanding their distribution to Hong Kong and Singapore. Due to local publication licensing laws the magazine was renamed Property Report Thailand in 2006. Also In 2006, Ensign held their inaugural Thailand Property Awards, to recognize achievements in residential real estate. In order to avoid accusations of favoritism towards advertisers, the organizers used a panel of inde-

The awards grew to where now they attract over 600 Industry VIP’s to their gala Awards dinner which garners considerable local and international media coverage for the winners. platform the restaurant takes its name and design inspiration from. The overall feel is of casual, comfortable elegance. We discover that Executive Chef Steffen Hoffer has designed a menu filled with classic European fare, which for our group, creates a sense of excitement. Making decisions on what to order is hard thanks to the abundance of attractive dining choices. For those with particular dietary needs, the menu highlights if dishes are Low Calorie, Low Sodium, Heart Friendly,
Gluten-Free, Diabetic, or Vegetarian. Our Railway Restaurant food journey starts with three appetisers. Salad Nicoise, originating from the French city of Nice and consisted of baby potatoes, green beans, kalamata olives, quail’s eggs, petit salad greens, and seared bluefin tuna sliced to bite-sized morsels. A salad of harmony and tasty delight. Also starting us off, a Prawn and Asparagus Salad with cherry tomatoes and watercress, along with a generous serve of classic cocktail sauce. And to
HOT MAGAZINE RECOMMENDED round it out, an Italian classic which we just had to try. Beef Carpaccio. Waferthin slices of raw Angus beef drizzled with extra virgin olive oil and topped with Grana Padano cheese shavings and rocket salad. As an interlude before the main course, we shared a generous bowl of the Railway Seafood Chowder. A creamy broth with potatoes, bacon, and thyme and brimming with prawns, mussels, and scallops. Delightfully tasty, though on reflection not needed, due to generous portion size of every
dish we received. Classic Coq au Vin, a long-time favourite had to be one of the main dishes. Chef Stefan’s version omits the mushrooms and has the carrots cooked separately and served on the side along with long beans and the creamiest of potato mash. All elements come together to create an elegant and tasty dish, yet the star was the fall off the bone chicken, flavoured and coloured by the wine it had slowly cooked in. Next up, Seared Duck Breast, cooked pink and sliced, presented on a potato
lime leaf puree with sautéed mushrooms and topped with a sweet and sour lychee sauce. And it was the sauce with slightly sweet more than sour notes that made it an ideal partner to the rich duck meat. The final main dish was Chef’s Caesar Salad with the typical ingredients of romaine lettuce, anchovies, parmesan, crispy bacon, and croutons to which was added pieces of grilled chicken. Two classic European desserts immediately caught our eye. The first, a French crepe dish that traces its history

Yes, Crepe Suzette, which in keeping with the original, is prepared at the table. A sauce of caramelised sugar and butter, orange juice, and segments is created to which the light, thin folded crepes are added to simmer momentarily before a splash of Grand Marnier is added, and the dish flambeed theatrically. The Crepe Suzettes, when served, are accompanied by the restaurant’s home-made vanilla ice cream. or the second consecutive year, Hua Hin hosted the WTA Thailand Open, which saw worldclass women tennis players and rising stars compete for both Singles and Doubles titles with prize money totaling USD 275,000.
Top 20 ranked players in this year’s draw included Elina Svitolina from Ukraine who is world number 4, and Petra Martic of Croatia (15). Further top 100 players included four Chinese players - Qiang Wang (27), Saisai Zheng (36), Yafan Wang (56) and Lin Zhu (70), Madga Linette of Poland (42) who celebrated her 28th birthday during the week, and Nao Hibino from Japan (84). Except for Yafan Wang who fell in the first round to 25-year-old Romanian Patricia Tig, all made it through to the third round. Defending champion Dayana Yastremska and several other played scheduled for the event did not make it to Hua Hin. However, this did provide an opportunity for several other lesser ranked players. In fact, six young women fought their way through qualifying to gain a place in the final sixteen on the Singles draw. Eighteen-year-old Chinese player, and 2018 Junior US Open Champion, Wang Xiyu impressed taking out the tournament’s number 2 ranked player Petra Martic in the first round and ultimately

making her way through to the third round. Another teenager, Swiss 19-year-old Leonie Kung, who had to first fight through the qualifying to gain a place in the main draw made it to the final where, after a valiant fight, was beaten by Magda Linette. Kung gets to take home her share of the prize money and jumps up 127 spots in the WTA player rankings thanks to her outstanding efforts this week. Poland’s Magda Linette did claim the WTA Thailand Open 2020 Champion. The Doubles side of the tournament was just as competitive with sixteen player pairings competing through four knockout rounds. The final saw Australians Arina Rodionova and Storm Sanders play their way past Barbara Haas (AUT) and Ellen Perez (AUS) to be crowned the WTA Thailand Open 2020 Doubles Champions. The other winner of the WTA Thailand Open 2020 was breast cancer awareness with centre court, and the overall event turned a splendid pink for the whole tournament. Organisers committed that a minimum of THB 1 million (approximately USD 33,000) from ticket sales would go to a Thailand based breast cancer charity. An additional $20,000 was pledged from supporters.

The benefactor of these funds is the Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer (QSBCC) Foundation, who for over 20 years has been educating and caring for the most underprivileged. According to a 2017 Thailand’s National Cancer Institute report, breast cancer still ranks No.1 in terms of new cancer patients in the country. An estimated 13,000 Thai women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year - equivalent to 35 people per day. The number continues to rise. QSCBC’s long experience in treating these less fortunate women has highlighted that patients could not be discharged home because of the conditions in their slum communities. By necessity, cancer patients recuperate in acute hospital beds; beds which are so desperately needed by new surgical patients. Hence, QSCBC latest project is the creation of a convalescent and palliative care hospice called “Pink Palace.” As part of the WTA Thailand Open 2020 closing ceremony, a final cheque of THB 1.6 million (around US$53,000) was presented to representatives of the Foundation.

WTA players Wang Yafan and Chloe Pacquet took some time off to help raise breast cancer awareness through tennis. With the QSCBC Foundation, Wang and Pacquet visited a disadvantaged community in Bangkok. They took part in tennis clinics and fun activities with the children while their mothers were informed about the risks of breast cancer and the benefits of early screening. During the event, over 100 women registered with the QSCBC Foundation for testing - an action that could help to save lives. The lucky children from this community had the opportunity to visit Hua Hin on 8th February and a chance for some of them to visit the beach for the first time. In Hua Hin, they watched some tennis at the WTA Thailand Open. They also had a fun outing to the nearby Vana Nava Water Park. While in Hua Hin, players also had the chance to participate in cultural activities, including making merit ceremonies to Buddhist monks, cooking, making traditional garlands, weaving Khomapastr cloth, painting hand-printed fabrics in classic Thai style and experiencing the natural beauty of Hua Hin through forest planting. All concerned announced the 2020 tournament a resounding success. And as the event was broadcasted live and internationally via Fox Sports, plus a live HD broadcast in Thailand, the world was undoubtedly introduced to Hua Hin and the WTA Thailand Open 2020. Expats Doing Business in Thailand
E
xotic, tropical and full of rich history, foreign traders have been sailing to the ports of Thailand as early as the 16th century and welcomed warmly, if not eagerly, by the people. The bulk of the credit goes to King Rama IV whose reign featured the conclusion of a series of treaties with foreign powers and is known as the period of western colonialism. Since then, the country has only gone to greater lengths to attract more foreign entrepreneurs. And why wouldn’t they? As the second-largest economy in ASEAN, Thailand is truly the hub of potential opportunities. The nation is one of the biggest rice exporters in

the world alongside tourism, textiles, jewelry, and electronics, all of which make up 60% of Thailand’s GDP. With steady economic development and robust supporting industries, the Thai government has also taken a consistently favorable stance towards foreign investors, recognizing their importance to Thailand’s economic and technological development. This recognition of the ever-competitive investment environment that characterizes the 21st century has allowed Thailand to remain attractive to foreign investors. Thailand’s ancient history and breathtaking beaches are also a sight to behold, leading many to want to settle down here. Although
most would deem starting a business in Thailand tricky, it is not too difficult. One of the first hurdles foreigners will encounter is obtaining a work permit. In Thailand it is far from easy and almost essential to engage a professional legal services company to help cut through the red tape. But it’s not just Thai regulations that make opening a new business challenging, an entrepreneurs home country can also add layers of complexity. U.S. citizens, for example, are subject to income tax regardless of their residence and workplace. If the annual income of a U.S. expat based in Thailand exceeds a certain threshold, they are required to report that income to the U.S. federal
government annually. Failure to do so can put them at serious risk of potential civil and possible criminal damages from the U.S. Treasury. Estimates are that millions of U.S. citizens residing outside of the U.S. aren’t even aware of this requirement. And, even if they are knowledgeable, with the litany of forms and reporting requirements that U.S. citizens are subject to, most make mistakes or overlook something important while completing their annual tax return themselves. Thankfully there are company’s set up to address this issue. One is Bangkok based, Global U.S. Tax Plan, which provides three primary services. Firstly, Tax Resolution, to bring U.S. citizens
up to date and compliant with the U.S. tax laws. This is especially important for those that have an issue from a prior year that needs to be resolved, or if they have never filed a U.S. tax return before. Secondly, Tax Preparation and Filing of the annual tax returns and FBAR’s (Foreign Bank Account Report) for current U.S. citizens. Thirdly, they offer Customized Tax Plans allowing their clients to maximize their income, minimize their U.S. tax liability while still being completely compliant with the U.S. tax law.
Other countries have similar laws in place for their citizenry living outside the homeland. If you are contemplating setting up a business in Thailand you should contact your embassy to find out your legal and fiscal responsibilities Living and working in the Land of Smiles can be a genuinely glorious lifestyle, envied by many, but it can be less than brilliant should you find yourself on the other side of your country’s tax laws.

s summer approaches, one dreams of sandy beaches and clear blue skies and the island of Phuket is precisely that. Often referred to as the Pearl of the Andaman, Phuket is Thailand’s largest island and one of the most popular destinations in the Kingdom for a holiday. Right now it is an especially good time to visit as foreign tourists are in low numbers due to the Coronavirus scare. If you can’t choose what to do first, then pick the most comfortable plan—

lay on a beach. Phuket is home to long stretches of white sandy beaches that are among the best in Southeast Asia. While one would typically go towards the famous, well-known beaches, friendly locals would recommend you visit the beaches that have no names for they will be far less crowded (this applies to restaurants as well). However, some beaches are well worth the visit, including Kata Noi beach (not to be confused with the more popular Kata beach), Freedom beach, Ao Sane beach, Nai Harn beach, Laem Ka and last but not the least, Patong Beach which lies
in the heart of Phuket. Most of the beaches are easily accessible and provide lovely views of the clear blue Andaman sea. With lots of space and plenty of places to eat and drink nearby, each beach is a pleasant place to relax. Most beaches also offer activities including snorkeling, jetskiing, surfing and kite-flying among others. For an outdoor adventure, head inland to Phuket’s Khao Sok National Park, where you can get the full jungle experience–complete with elephants,
lazy rivers, and tree-house lodgings. This area is said to be one of the oldest rain forests in the world, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most scenic, with its magnificent cascading waterfalls and dramatic limestone formations. For those who would rather explore the island, your itinerary must include a visit to Phra Phuttha Mingmongkhon Akenakkhiri (Big Buddha). The 45-meter high statue of Buddha is one of Phuket’s landmarks and can be clearly visible from different parts of the island. Free of charge, the temple
also houses an exhibition of the Buddha’s life. Furthermore, don’t forget about the terrific view over Chalong Bay. The path up to the temple also offers several viewpoints with a great view over the southwestern part of the island. However, some visitors would claim that the best view of the sunset is from Promthep Cape on the southern tip of Phuket. The viewpoint also has a shrine with elephants and a lighthouse with a small museum inside. Visitors can go on the platform, but the view isn’t too different from the one below. If you take the stairs down coming from
the shrine, you can take some beautiful pictures of the cape and enjoy the view at the offshore island Koh Mun and the Nai Harn beach. Be warned though, this is a popular spot to visit, especially at sunset, and it can get crowded. Another viewpoint includes the Panwa viewpoint, which is perhaps one of the less-visited viewpoints on the island. Situated in Cape Panwa atop one of the tallest hills in Phuket, the views from here easily rival any other, with 360-degree vistas out over southern and eastern Phuket.

Another of Phuket’s landmarks includes Wat Chalong in the town of Chalong. It is the biggest and most famous temple on the island. Built in the 1800s, the temple is dedicated to Luang Pho Cham and Luang Pho Chuang, two monks who lived during the time of King Rama V. They were said to have remarkable healing powers and till present, the temple is still associated with healing. Additionally, the unique design of the temple is worth noting, including the minute detailing of scenes from Buddha’s life on the pillars. The temple complex houses a fragment of the Buddha’s bone and visitors can have their fortunes told inside the temple as well. Located close to Kata beach, Wat Chalong is also on the road to many other sightseeing spots, including Big Buddha. It is recommended to visit the temple complex in the early morning or late afternoon so you can avoid the crowds. By now, you might tire of touring, but don’t miss out on Wat Khao Rang. One of the lesserknown temples in Phuket, the temple was founded by a monk, Luang Pu Supha who claimed to be the oldest man in the world. Born more than a century ago in a rural area of Issan, he was also known as ‘The Living Monk’ as he lived through the reigns of five Thai Kings of the Chakri Dynasty, from King Rama V to King Rama IX. He began his monkhood at the age of 9 and was ordained as first a Samanen (apprentice) and later a monk. He traveled extensively, mainly by foot, to nearby countries such as Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, India and China and even to France (a feat unusual for monks at the time). He was a humble man, dedicated to serving the public until his death in 2013. The temple remains as a tribute to him and is a spiritual center for

many worshippers on the island although it is not as well visited as other temples. The atmosphere of the temple is very peaceful and not at all touristy. The temple also boasts an incredible collection of Thai art and Hindu gods including the Lord of Death, Yommaraj, giants and other traditional carvings. It’s common to see different generations of families come to make merit by donating fresh food as well as alms to monks, usually in the morning before 11 am. Also, if you can travel further up the hill, you’ll get a beautiful view of the town and ocean. You’ll find a handful of restaurants on Rang Hill, which are perfect for taking pictures while enjoying some local food. The old town of Phuket is worth a mention for its colorful houses, and it is a delightful place to stroll around. Small enough to explore on foot, the area was built from the riches of the tin mining boom of the 18th century. So the architecture is heavily European (Portuguese and British) influenced. Aside from the colorful shops, other architectural highlights within Old Phuket Town are the Sino-Colonial mansions. These stately mansions had initially been the homes of the rich

Chinese tin barons. And don’t forget the food. Although most restaurants offer Thai dishes like pad thai or som tam, authentic Phuketian cuisine is influenced mainly by Hokkien and Malaysian culture and blended seamlessly in its distinct brand of Peranakan cuisine. From delicious seafood such as pla muk neung manao (steamed squid) to khanom jeen kang poo (cold rice noodles) to moo hong (pork belly stew), there is always something new to try. Patong’s Banzaan Market on Sai Kor Road is well-known for its clean and pleasant environment, and a vast choice of fresh food. The market is divided into different sections for meat, seafood, vegetables, exotic fruits, and Thai sweets, among other tasty treats. However, the island of Phuket comes alive and shines its brightest at night. Bangla Road in Patong is one of the best places to visit for a night out. There are plenty of bars and clubs with live music, entertaining shows, and as always, plenty of people. Considered a more raucous version of Khao San Road in Bangkok, this might not be everyone’s scene unless you’re planning to really party. For a more relaxed vibe, head to Kata Hill overlooking Kata Noi Beach, where three little bars invite chilled out beach-bum types to sip cocktails while
watching the sun go down. Of course, no city in Thailand is without its night markets and the Naka Weekend Market in Phuket Town is no exception. One of the biggest weekend markets of Phuket, the market offers a vast variety of cheap but tasty street food, souvenirs and clothes from 4 pm till 11 pm. For families, it is recommended to visit the Phuket FantaSea show and the Siam Niramit show, which celebrates Thailand’s rich culture and history. As a tropical island, the best time to visit Phuket would be mostly dependent on the weather. If you’re not a fan of crowds, avoid January and February, although the crowds are down this year. The rainy season in Phuket runs from April through to October. Many would recommend these months as the best time to visit because the travel rates are much lower than usual and the beaches are less crowded. There is usually a downpour daily in the early evening at this time, but throughout much of the day, Phuket weather is typically sunny and pleasant. Phuket has an international airport and direct flights are possible from many major airlines, including Air Asia. In addition, the bus terminal sees buses arriving and departing from just about everywhere in Thailand. If
you would prefer to travel otherwise, Phuket can also be reached by boat from Krabi on the mainland, plus the surrounding islands of Koh Lanta and Koh Phi Phi (which are also worth visiting). Island hopping is popular, from Phang Nga Bay to the infamous James Bond Island. The lesser-known Similan Islands is a set of unspoiled islands located about 84 km northwest of Phuket. Its pristine white sand beaches and unusual rock formations can be seen aboveground and underwater. Aside from its unique undersea topography, the chance to see manta rays and whale sharks makes the scuba diving around the islands some of the most sought after in the world. Unfortunately, the Similan islands are only open to the public from mid-October till mid-May. However, along with the main island, Phuket is comprised of 32 smaller islands, so there are other places you can visit. There’s Koh Racha Yai, Koh He (Coral Island), Koh Yao Yai, and Koh Bon, to name a few. As one of the biggest tourist hubs in the country, Phuket caters amiably to couples, families, business travelers, and most especially to those who are just looking for a good time.

Seconds Make The Difference In First Contact
56
HOT Magazine
It’s no surprise that people make assumptions about you based on what you are wearing and your general appearance. What is astonishing is how quickly they do it. Psychologists call it “thin-slicing. Within moments of meeting, people decide all sorts of things about you, from status to intelligence to conscientiousness. Following are assumptions people make about you, sometimes accurate and sometimes less so, based on first impressions.
Trustworthiness People may decide on your trustworthiness in as little as a tenth of a second. Princeton researchers found this out by giving one group of 245 university students 100 milliseconds to rate the attractiveness, competence, likability, aggressiveness, and trustworthiness of actors’ faces. One hundred and twentyeight members of another group were able to take as long as they wanted. Results showed that ratings of trustworthiness were highly similar between the two groups, even more similar than ratings of attractiveness suggesting that we figure out almost instantaneously if we can trust someone.
Intelligence A 2007 study led by Nora A. Murphy, a professor at Loyola Marymount University, found that looking your conversation partner in the eye might help encourage people to see you as more intelligent. For the study, 182 college students were asked to discuss an assigned topic in pairs for five minutes. Partners then rated each other on how smart they seemed. Results showed that people were perceived as more intelligent when they held their partner’s gaze while talking. “Looking while speaking was a key behavior,” she wrote. Wearing thick glasses and speaking expressively could help, too.
Religiosity One study, led by Laura P. Neiman at the University of California at Berkeley, found that 123 undergrads could accurately assess 113 people’s religiosity simply by looking at full-body photographs of those individuals. In this case, religiosity was measured by ask-

ing the individuals pictured as well as three people who knew them well to complete a questionnaire. Those who appeared to be smiling, energetic, relaxed, and neat were judged to be more religious and in fact, they usually were.
Dominance Bald isn’t just beautiful, it’s powerful. In a University of Pennsylvania experiment, undergrads looked at 25 photos of men, some with shaved heads and others with full heads of hair. The students rated men with shaved heads as more dominant. Two larger follow-up experiments with 344 and 552 adults, respectively, had similar results. Participants tended to rate bald men those who’d had their hair either digitally removed or those with shaved heads as more dominant. Importantly, researchers found that it was specifically shaved heads that people seemed to associate with dominance not just the lack of hair. So if it’s starting to go, you might want to shave it.

Success A British-Turkish study of 274 people had them look at faceless photos of men in tailored vs. off-the-peg suits for five seconds. They tended to rate the guys in tailored suits as more successful. “On the evidence of this study it appears men may be advised to purchase clothing that is well tailored, as it can positively enhance the image they communicate to others,” the authors wrote.
Wealth In a 2011 study of college students who were shown photos of a male model dressed in either business or casual attire and then asked questions about how he’d perform in a variety of jobs, the participants tended to predict that the crisply dressed men would make more money and get promoted sooner.
Adventurousness People don’t just read into who you are from your appearance: they’re also looking at the way you move. In a study, a group of students were shown video clips of other students walking, some with looser gaits, some with tighter ones. Just a few steps were needed to give the viewers a sense of the other person’s personality. They tended to equate looser gaits with extroversion and adventurousness while seeing the more clipped walkers as more neurotic. Intriguingly, the participants were generally wrong in their assumptions.

Aggressiveness Sometimes, first impressions can be totally wrong other times they can be right on point. A Canadian experiment of undergraduate women found that they were able to accurately assess how aggressive 37 different men were after looking at a photograph of their faces for 39 milliseconds. The researchers measured aggression by having the men pictured play a computer game in which they had the option to steal points from another player. Researchers also found a connection between men with larger facial width-to-height ratios (regardless of their expressions) and perceived aggression levels and reasoned that it could be because angry expressions involve lowering the brow and raising the upper lip, which increases this ratio.
Socioeconomic Status A Dutch study found that people wearing name-brand clothes Lacoste and Tommy Hilfiger, to be precise, were seen as higher status and wealthier than folks wearing nondesigner clothes when they approached 80 shoppers in a mall.” Perceptions did not differ on any of the other dimensions that might affect the outcome of social interactions,” the authors wrote.”There were no differences in perceived attractiveness, kindness, and trustworthiness, just status and wealth.
Extroversion A study led by German researchers had people look at photographs of hundreds of faces and had them rate the people pictured on different personality traits. The researchers say extroverts generally display more cheerful expressions in photographs, so they’re easy to spot. They write: “Many people attempt to express positive emotions by smiling, particularly when being photographed, but introverts seem to do so less frequently, less skillfully, and in more reserved ways than extroverts.”
Leadership Researchers asked undergrads to review headshots of close to 100 managing partners at top law firms and rate them on different personality traits, including dominance, facial maturity, likability, and trustworthiness. The researchers combined the partners’ scores on dominance and facial maturity to create a single “power” score and combined their scores on likability and trustworthiness to create a single “warmth” score. People who scored higher on power tended to lead more

profitable firms. Even weirder, the same findings held true when participants looked at college yearbook photos of 73 of the managing partners, some of which were taken half a century earlier.
Friendship “Friendship chemistry” is a real thing. Friendship chemistry coined by researchers of a 2015 paper published in the Journal of Social Science is defined as the initial connection between pals. Those who are agreeable, or friendly; open to experience; and conscientious, or hardworking and organized are more likely to experience friendship chemistry, the researchers determined. But if you want to make a lasting friendship it will take more than just a good first impression. It takes about 40 to 60 hours to form a casual friendship, 80 to 100 hours to be upgraded to being a friend, and about 200 hours to become good friends, one study found. Author Nicholas Boothman wrote the book “How to Make People Like You in 90 Seconds or Less.” The book highlights key strategies for making a trusting connection with your conversation partner while greeting them. The best part? The whole process takes just four seconds and the best part is everyone can do it.
Be open Boothman says you’ll want to open both your body and your attitude. In terms of your body language, Boothman says you should aim your heart directly at the person you’re
meeting. Don’t cover your heart with your hands or your arms. And if you’re wearing a jacket, unbutton it beforehand. It’s equally important to cultivate a positive attitude. While you’re greeting the person, Boothman says you should feel and be aware of that positivity.
Make eye contact Boothman says you should be the one to initiate eye contact and let your eyes reflect your positive attitude. If you feel uncomfortable making eye contact, he suggests a strategy for getting used to it: When you’re watching TV, note the eye color of the people on camera and say the name of the color in your head. The next day, do the same thing with every person you meet. Just make sure to look away at some point — one recent study found that most people preferred eye contact that lasted about three seconds. And no one in the study preferred eye contact that lasted longer than nine seconds.
Beam Boothman advises being the first one to smile. You’ll send the message that you’re sincere. Research also suggests that smiling when you meet someone in a happy context is a useful way to get them to remember you. But keep in mind: If you’re employing this strategy in a job interview, consider letting your smile fade after the initial meet-and-greet.
played candidates for the position of newspaper reporter, manager, and research assistant were less likely to get the hypothetical job when they smiled — especially during the middle of the interviews.
Say ‘Hello’ Whether you say “hi,” “hey,” or “hello,” or use another salutation, you should sound delighted to be making this person’s acquaintance. Next, you’ll want to extend your hand. Make sure to give a firm handshake, which generally creates a more positive impression. When the person you’re meeting gives his or her name, try to repeat it a few times. For example, you might say, “Sara. Nice to meet you, Sara!” If you’re meeting multiple people and can’t shake everyone’s hand at once, Boothman says it’s possible to conduct a “hands-free” handshake. Do everything you’d normally do while shaking someone’s hand — point your heart in their direction, say hello, and smile — but don’t extend your hand.
Lean in Finally, although there’s no need to fall over into the person you’re meeting, Boothman suggests an “almost imperceptible forward tilt” to show that you’re open to and interested in what the person has to say.
In one study, researchers asked college students to role-play job interviews. They found that students who

The America’s Cup, A Rich History

defend the trophy 24 times from 1870 through 1980—until 1983, when Australia II became the first successful challenger to lift the trophy from the Americans.
The trophy’s roots date back to when a syndicate of businessmen from New York sailed the schooner America across the Atlantic Ocean for the World’s Fair in England. The schooner won a race around the Isle of Wight against a fleet of British yachts to claim the £100 Cup.
Throughout its history, the America’s Cup has enchanted leaders of industry and royalty from tea merchant Sir Thomas Lipton, to brewing and real estate mogul Alan Bond, aviation pioneer Sir T.O.M. Sopwith, the Aga Khan, media mogul Ted Turner, and Harold S. Vanderbilt.
he America’s Cup, the pinnacle of yachting, was first contested in 1851 making it the oldest trophy in international sport, predating the modern Olympic Games by 45 years.
From there, the United States embarked on what would become the longest winning streak in the history of sport. A 132-year stretch saw boats representing the country successfully
Not to mention the icons of the sport of sailing such as Tom Blackaller, Peter Blake, Dennis Conner and Russell Coutts and Grant Dalton.

The Legacy Begins ‘Your Majesty, there is no second’ In 1851 a radical looking schooner ghosted out of the afternoon mist and swiftly sailed past the Royal Yacht stationed in the Solent, between the Isle of Wight and the south coast of England, on an afternoon when Queen Victoria was watching a sailing race. As the schooner, named America, passed the Royal Yacht in first position, and saluted by dipping its ensign three times, Queen Victoria asked one of her attendants to tell her who was in second place.”Your Majesty, there is no second,” came the reply. That phrase, just four words, is still the best description of the America’s Cup, and how it represents the singular pursuit of excellence. That day in August, 1851, the yacht America, representing the young New York Yacht Club, would go on to beat the best the British could offer and win the Royal Yacht Squadron’s 100 Pound Cup. This was more than a simple boat race however, as it symbolised a great victory for the new world over the old,

a triumph that unseated Great Britain as the world’s undisputed maritime power. The trophy would go to the young democracy of the United States and it would be well over 100 years before it was taken away from New York. Shortly after America won the 100 Guinea Cup in 1851, New York Yacht Club Commodore John Cox Stevens and the rest of his ownership syndicate sold the celebrated schooner and returned home to New York as heroes. They donated the trophy to the New York Yacht Club under a Deed of Gift, which stated that the trophy was to be “a perpetual challenge cup for friendly competition between nations.” Thus was born the America’s Cup, named after the winning schooner America. The America’s Cup is without a doubt the most difficult trophy in sport to win. In the more than 160 years since that first race off England, only four nations have won what is often called the “oldest trophy in international sport.” For some perspective, consider that there had been nine contests for the America’s Cup before the first modern
Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896.
Early Challenges The very first challenge would come from Englishman James Ashbury, who raced against a fleet from the New York Yacht Club just off Staten Island in 1870. After much dispute over the conditions for racing, Ashbury’s Cambria finished tenth in the 17 boat fleet, prompting a second challenge the following year. The 1871 America’s Cup match was a precursor for many of the legal battles that would engulf the Cup over the next 100 years. After reportedly consulting his lawyers, Ashbury insisted on racing against just one boat, not an entire fleet and protested both the scoring of the races and the Race Committee who set the race course. In the end he limped home complaining bitterly about poor sportsmanship on the part of the Americans and insisting he had actually won the America’s Cup, to no avail. The next two Challenges came from Canada, but the northerners were no match for the Americans and were soundly beaten.
The Lipton Era
Challenger Series
There were a further six challenges before the turn of the Century, including the first of what came to be called the Lipton era of the America’s Cup. Sir Thomas Lipton, the Irish/Scottish tea baron challenged five times between 1899 and 1930. He became the loveable loser; a man whose good-natured approach to the obstacles stacked against him turned him into a folk hero and promoted his business interests in America as well.
In 1970, there waS more than one yacht club interested in challenging for the America’s Cup, so for the first time, a competition was staged to determine the single Challenger that would face the Defender, the New York Yacht Club.
While Lipton didn’t win the America’s Cup, he became one of the first to introduce the idea of sports sponsorship, and he realised a financial windfall from it. Lipton’s final challenge in 1930 was the first in the new J-Class boats. This was a period of magnificent beauty afloat, as the towering masts carrying an improbable amount of sail powered through the chop off Newport, Rhode Island. Harold Vanderbilt was selected to defend for the New York Yacht Club that year and did so with ease.
Post War The Second World War marked the end of the J-Class, and when America’s Cup racing began again in 1958, it signaled the beginning of the 12-Metre era. The Americans would successfully defend eight more times over the next 25-year period. Sadly, in 1939, all but three of the original ten J’s were used as scrap metal for the war effort. The three surviving J-Class yachts have been restored and still sail in regattas around the world.
The French malletier Louis Vuitton became involved with the America’s Cup in 1983, supporting the Challenger Selection Series that came to be known as the Louis Vuitton Cup. The idea was twofold; to develop and identify the strongest possible challenger for the America’s Cup and ensure that they were sufficiently battle-tested through tough competition to beat the Defender. The defenders had been involved in this type of selection series for most of the century, but until recently, there had been but one Challenger.
The Cup Leaves America Australia was one of the challenging countries in 1983, and the ‘Men from Down Under’ brought a secret weapon. Australia II sported a boxing Kangaroo flag in the rigging as she was towed out to sea, and under the water, a radically-designed winged keel that gave the 12-Metre Class boat superior speed under most conditions. The Australians kept the secret to themselves, draping large ‘modesty skirts’ from the deck to the ground when the boat was hauled from the water – keeping prying eyes away and all the time building speculation as to what could be under there.
Dennis Conner, ‘Mr. America’s Cup’, was charged with defending against the upstart Australians, who handily whipped through the challenger fleet and carried off the first Louis Vuitton Cup. That summer, in 1983, the America’s Cup had pride of place on every newscast, and front-page status in every paper. There was a sense of history about that season; that somehow, finally, the New York Yacht Club’s 132-year winning streak was going to come to an end. Equipment problems on the Australian boat allowed Conner to jump ahead early in the best of seven series, but Australian skipper John Bertrand battled back, eventually bringing the series to a score line of 3-3. The seventh and final race was symbolic of the entire series, with Conner’s Liberty leading for most of the course in a light and shifty breeze. It was not until the final spinnaker run that Australia II was able to jump into the lead, and then hold on to it despite a ferocious, last-gasp assault over the last few minutes. For the first time in 132 years, the America’s Cup was leaving the New York Yacht Club. Conner, then representing the San Diego Yacht Club, won the right to fight another day in 1987. Held in Fremantle, he won the Louis Vuitton Cup to become the Challenger and then delivered a shut-out victory of 4-0. This America’s Cup featured quite an on-the-water show, with the famous “Fremantle Doctor,” strong afternoon sea-breezes, blowing up incredible sailing conditions with giant white-capped

seas, to challenge both the sailors and equipment.
taking the America’s Cup back to the Southern Hemisphere.
The Return to America
Sir Peter Blake’s crew declared there would be no defender selection series, and Team New Zealand focused on in-house training, taking advantage of a deep pool of young talent to push Coutts to the limit in training.
Dennis Conner, basking in presidential welcomes and ticker-tape parades through New York, was in no rush to settle the details of the next event, and New Zealand, exploiting a loophole in the century old Deed of Gift, demanded an immediate challenge in 1988. What resulted was the first America’s Cup Finals where two different styles of boat raced each other, with the Kiwis in a giant 90-foot waterline boat against Conner in a much smaller but faster hard-winged catamaran. The best of three series went to the Americans and after numerous court challenges – the teams spent far more time battling in a courtroom than they did on the water – the result stood.
America’s Cup Class A good thing to come of the entire 1988 fiasco was a new class of boat that featured a more modern design that could perform well in the lighter winds of San Diego; the America’s Cup Class, a type of boat built to a design rule. Under the rule, all boats must look similar, although the designers had enough leeway to make an impact on boat speed. Progress is always made from one generation to the next. In 1992, two American teams sought the right to defend the United States through a Defender series, where Dennis Conner was beaten and lost the right to defend to American billionaire Bill Koch with his massive, four-boat America 3 programme. On the challenger side, New Zealand met the Italian Il Moro de Venezia Challenge, eventually yielding to relentless pressure from the Italians and their skipper Paul Cayard. In the concluding battle for the 29th America’s Cup, Koch, occasionally steering the boat himself, and his skipper Buddy Melges, successfully defended the America’s Cup.
Black Magic 1995 would be the year of the Kiwi. Led by the fierce determination of Sir Peter Blake and with the steady hand of Russell Coutts on the wheel, New Zealand’s Black Magic dominated the challengers in San Diego, and went on to make short work of the Dennis Conner / Paul Cayard defense partnership,

At the same time, the Louis Vuitton Cup in 2000 featured what has been described as perhaps the best two weeks of racing in the history of the America’s Cup. Italy’s Luna Rossa Challenge outlasted Paul Cayard’s AmericaOne, winning the best of nine series 5-4. Not only was the series close, but many of the races were sailed with the boats just metres apart, the lead changing hands over and over again. But Prada’s Luna Rossa, although battle-hardened, was no match for Team New Zealand. Skipper Russell Coutts staked the Kiwis to a quick 4-0 lead – equaling the record for most consecutive America’s Cup wins set by Charlie Barr 100 years earlier – before handing the wheel to understudy Dean Barker who promptly became the youngest skipper at 26-years old to win the America’s Cup. Team New Zealand looked to be so far ahead of the challengers that the America’s Cup appeared to be secure in the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron for a long time to come. But shortly after the win, Russell Coutts and many of his Team New Zealand stalwarts announced they were defecting to join a new team that had to be built from the ground up for Swiss bio-tech entrepreneur Ernesto Bertarelli. Within months, in a scene reminiscent of an earlier era, many of the world’s most successful men announced they were coming to stake their claim on the Cup. Backed by Patrizio Bertelli of Prada, the Italians would be back, as would three strong American challenges, including teams backed by Oracle software guru Larry Ellison, and a Pacific Northwest team led by Craig McCaw and Paul Allen. Joining them were teams from France, Italy, Sweden, and for the first time in 16 years, Great Britain, making another run at regaining that which they lost 151 years earlier. After four months of round robin and elimination rounds, the Louis Vuitton Cup Challenger Series came down
to a nine-race final between Ernesto Bertarelli’s Team Alinghi and Larry Ellison’s BMW ORACLE Racing. Both teams arrived at the finals with impressive records in the previous rounds, and the racing showed these two teams were evenly matched. Although the record was a 5-1 series win for Alinghi, the numbers belied how close the racing actually was. The battle to the win the Louis Vuitton Cup created a very strong Challenger, and set up a much-anticipated America’s Cup Match between Coutts and his old Team New Zealand understudy Dean Barker. Unfortunately for the Kiwis, Team New Zealand was no match for Alinghi who sweep the Match 5-0, and take the America’s Cup to Europe for the first time.
A New Protocol Shortly after winning the America’s Cup, the Société Nautique de Genève (SNG) accepted a challenge from the Golden Gate Yacht Club, putting the wheels in motion for the 32nd America’s Cup. A new Protocol was issued, detailing the plans for the next event and outlining some of the changes. It was immediately clear that the move to Europe would mean a sea change for the America’s Cup. Taking advantage of what some perceived to be a problem for the new Defender, the SNG announced that it would take its time to decide upon a venue, drafting up a selection criteria that would ensure reliable sailing conditions. The nationality rules were abolished, freeing up teams to sign the best people regardless of their passport, and rules on the transfer of technology from prior syndicates were eased to enable new teams access to old information. Most importantly, a new organising authority, AC Management, was created and charged with the task of overseeing all aspects of the 32nd America’s Cup including the Challenger Selection Series. In short, a new era of the America’s Cup had dawned. The 32nd America’s Cup in Valencia, Spain was a success on many levels. By bidding out the city, the organising authority was able to raise revenue on a scale previously unimagined. A four-year programme of racing took America’s Cup racing to other European venues, drumming up interest in the event. And teams from new territo-

ries, like South Africa and China, added to the international flavour of the racing. Emirates Team New Zealand, rejuvenated behind the leadership of Grant Dalton, won the Louis Vuitton Cup to set up a rematch against Alinghi. But although the Kiwis won a couple of races and lost another by just one second, the Swiss Defender proved to be too strong and retained the title.
Multihull Battle Shortly after successfully defending the Cup, SNG announced it had accepted a challenge from a newly formed yacht club, the Spanish CNEV, and released a Protocol for the 33rd America’s Cup. Many in the America’s Cup community balked at the terms in the Protocol and BMW ORACLE Racing, with Larry Ellison leading the charge, challenged the validity of the new Spanish club. The courts agreed and GGYC became the challenger of record. When GGYC and SNG were unable to mutually consent on a new Protocol, the 33rd America’s Cup became a ‘Deed of Gift’ Match, as in 1988. There were numerous court challenges, initiated by both sides. In the end, both teams having learned the lesson of 1988, built enormous multihulls. Then, just months before the race, BMW ORACLE Racing replaced its soft sail rig with a towering wing sail – the largest wing ever built. When the boats finally lined up to race off Valencia in February 2010, the BMW ORACLE Racing trimaran with its powerful wing sail proved to be superior. Skipper James Spithill, just 30 years old, won with a record of 2-0. Once again, the America’s Cup would be defended by an American Team in the 34th edition.
Battle on the Bay The speed, the thrill and the challenge of building multihulls proved irresistible and ORACLE TEAM USA elected to make the AC72, a catamaran powered by a towering wingsail, the class for the 34th America’s Cup. The venue would be the iconic San Francisco Bay, where late summer winds were predictable and strong. Emirates Team New Zealand was among three challengers (along with Artemis Racing and Luna Rossa Challenge) lined up to battle ORACLE TEAM USA. The Kiwis, always pushing the boundaries of innovation were the first team to bring foiling to the America’s Cup enabling the AC72 to get up and out of the water, foiling, and soon all the teams were flying above the water at speeds over 40 knots.

Emirates Team New Zealand’s ingenuity would revolutionize the modern America’s Cup to a high speed and action packed event focused on a younger and athletic generation of sailors. The boats were without risk however, and ORACLE TEAM USA capsized during training on San Francisco Bay, all but destroying one of their boats and setting their program back by months. Tragically, Artemis Racing also had a training accident and crew member Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson perished when he became trapped under the capsized boat. His memory lives on through the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation, a charity devoted to youth sailing projects. With new safety regulations developed following the accident, racing started in the challenger series, where Emirates Team New Zealand made short work of Artemis Racing and Luna Rossa Challenge. The Kiwis then jumped out to an impressive lead in the America’s Cup Match over ORACLE TEAM USA, who couldn’t match the New Zealander’s upwind speed. After making a critical crew change, bringing on Ben Ainslie for John Kostecki, and making continual modifications to their boat and sailing techniques, the Americans were getting faster, but were running out of time. Emirates Team New Zealand reached match point, building an 8-1 lead. But improbably, ORACLE TEAM USA turned the tide and began to win races. The gap narrowed and then disappeared. Now it was ORACLE TEAM
USA who were faster and the score was tied, 8-8. There would be one last race; the winner would claim the Cup. The final race was a microcosm of the match itself. Emirates Team New Zealand had an early lead, but couldn’t fend off the American boat. ORACLE TEAM USA sailed into history, taking the closest match in America’s Cup history, 9-8.
The Battle Of Bermuda Oracle Team USA decided to take the event out of their home country to the pristine island of Bermuda for the 35th edition. After a torrid few years following the brutal defeat in San Francisco, Emirates Team New Zealand quietly rebuilt a refreshed young and hungry team Skippered by Glenn Ashby and helmed by Olympic Gold Medalist Peter Burling. Developing their campaign in silo in their home base of Auckland, New Zealand while most other challengers and the defenders Oracle Team USA set up camp in Bermuda, the kiwis continued to innovate and push the boundaries in secrecy by “Throwing the ball as far as possible in terms of design and innovation to see if they could reach it.” They surprised the sailing and America’s Cup world just a few months before the start of the event, by launching a revolutionary boat with ‘cyclors’ powering their AC50 catamaran.
Emirates Team New Zealand, won all of their double round robin races except their two races against the defender Oracle team USA who were racing in the Challenger Selection Series for the first time in history providing the American team with a false sense of hope. The hardened kiwis came back from a near catastrophic capsize to beat Land Rover BAR in the semi finals and then the Swedish team Artemis Racing in the Louis Vuitton Cup Final, providing the ticket for a heavy weight rematch against Oracle Team USA, who went into the match with a 1 point lead. Emirates Team New Zealand’s push for redemption was swift, a dominant display blew Oracle Team USA away 7-1 to win the America’s Cup for the third time.
The Return to Auckland The jubilant and proud Kiwis took the America’s Cup back to Auckland where preparations and a Protocol was promptly developed, together with Challenger of Record - Luna Rossa, for the 36th America’s Cup in their home waters. An exciting new class of boat, the AC75, a foiling monohull, the likes of which had never been seen before was announced along with the title event sponsor PRADA, setting the foundations of an exciting event in 2021.
Their boat concept was so far advanced there was no time for the innovation to be replicated this time, despite futile attempts by the Oracle Team USA.
