Dear Reader Welcome to Issue 5, Volume 3 of HOT Magazine. Starting on June 6th, HOT Hua Hin Co. Ltd., the publishers of this magazine, are bringing the Mister National Universe Pageant to Thailand. Host cities are Hua Hin and Bangkok. Twenty-five men, each representing their own country will compete in a variety of events, all with the hopes of winning the Mister National Universe title. On page 16 we give you a sneak peek into this exciting international event and the different venues where you will be able to view it for yourself. With Asian roots and global ambitions, Minor Hotels’ historic success story spans five decades. The origins of the company stretch back to 1967 when business legend, William E. “Bill” Heinecke, then only 17 years old, founded Minor Holdings – named as a nod to the budding entrepreneur’s youthful age. In the years that followed, Bill expanded Minor across a variety of industries by creating innovative brands and strategically acquiring companies to fortify the portfolio. In 1978 Minor embarked on its first hotel venture, the Royal Garden Resort in Pattaya. Since that first small but significant step, the Minor Hotels team has grown the hospitality enterprise into an international leader, currently boasting over 20,000 rooms across 154 hotels in 24 countries. In 2001 Bill and his team opened the Hua Hin Anantara Resort and Spa, the very first property to be branded an Anantara. Since then the Anantara chain has grown to 42 five-star properties spanning Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Maldives, Mozambique, Qatar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, Vietnam and Zambia. This month we take you to where it all began, Anantara #1 on page 34. See for yourself why the Anantara brand has become so popular with international travelers. Further inside, we introduce you to Janet Attwood. Janet, along with her ex, wrote the wildly successful New York Times bestselling book called “The Passion Test” as well as several others. An expert on what it takes to live a passionate life, Janet has traveled the world sharing the principles she has developed. Janet has shared the stage with such luminaries as The Dali Lama, Sir Richard Branson, Stephen Covey, Nobel Laureate F. W. deKlerk and many others. In addition to writing books and giving seminars, Janet, also teaches people to become Certified Passion Test Facilitators. Over 2,500 facilitators in 65 countries are now licensed to teach Janet’s Passion Principles to others. HOT Magazine recently had the distinct pleasure of sitting down with Janet to discuss her amazing life and how she got where she is, that’s on page 56. Next we take you to Pattaya for the 13th running of Thailand's award-winning Top of the Gulf Regatta Presented by Ocean Marina. Over 700 sailors took part in the four day race that provided both offshore and onshore excitement. Lace up your boat shoes, get yourself on board and turn to page 66. Those are just a few of the stories you’ll find inside this month’s issue of HOT Magazine. As always, thank you for picking us up and we hope you enjoy the read.

junction of Naeb Kaehat Road and soi 51. Don’t look for the English name, it is only written in Thai. The place is easily recognizable thanks to the lighthouse planted at one of its accesses. It is a mix of street food restaurants and more established outlets, one of them offering quite an interesting selection of wines. It is a very open place, yet safe for the kids to run around. On top of one of the restaurants is a well-done little museum on Hua Hin. Altogether a place that carries the image of the city. What do you like to do in your free time and why? Having only returned to the city after so many years, I have so much to discover. I like to go to Cha-Am for a lazy afternoon on the beach sun loungers. Cicada Market is also a favorite destination. I recently went to Pa-la’u waterfall and fell in love with the place. The water was so refreshing on that steaming day! We even had the visit of a group of naughty red-faced monkeys, thankfully they only managed in stealing the dirty diaper of my son, while my shorts with the car keys were just next by. Phew! What would you recommend to newcomers to do in Hua Hin and why?
What is your full name and age? My name is Bertrand Margerie, and I am 48 for a few more months. What is your current Job Position? I have the privilege to lead the team of Putahracsa Hua Hin, where I act as General Manager. How long have you lived in Hua Hin or been coming to Hua Hin? I first came to Hua Hin 20 years ago, and only returned to settle down here 2 months ago. What did you know about Hua Hin before you moved here? What my backpacker memories kept reminding me: a nice little beachfront town, with a relaxing atmosphere and a truly genuine and friendly local population. At that time, most was happening between the railway station and the seafront. As I walked the streets around soi 61, I could find the soi and the guesthouse where I used to stay, that had quite some uplift since then.

(guests or colleagues), every interaction is unique. As you engage with them, you always leave richer in experience in the evening than you had arrived in the morning.
Take your time. There is a relaxed flair in the city that does not push you to live at a fast and furious pace. As you will most probably fall in love with the city and sign-up for many years of living here, you will have plenty of time to discover it and its surroundings.
What do you like least about your profession?
Tell us a surprising fact that the public might not know about you?
Surely paperwork and office work, unfortunately the more you grow in this industry, the more administrative tasks you have. That’s the back side of the coin. It also takes probably a little too much of one’s life so I often call it a parttime job: 12 hours-a-day.
I have no academic education nor degree in this industry. I applied in a 5-star hotel at the age of 19, got hired and learned from scratch. But I soon became passionate. Without passion, you cannot make it in this industry.
What do you like most about Hua Hin? Its peaceful and provincial atmosphere during the week, and its busy and buzzing pace over the weekends. It is like living in a different city. This reminds me of Cannes, on the French Riviera, becoming overnight a totally different city comes the time, every year, of the Film Festival.
What do you like most about your profession?
What is your favorite restaurant and why? (please don’t promote your own restaurants)
There is no routine. From the time that you deal all-day long with people

What is the most outlandish thing you have ever done and why? Travelling half of the world -or nearlyfor literally just a few hours to see very special people in my life. Unannounced, of course, as this adds to the drama of the moment. But I wonder if this is so outlandish. Maybe not that much when you live on the other side of the planet.

TRUE ARENA HUA HIN, HOME OF THE PBI TENNIS ACADEMY Peter Burwash International (PBI) was founded 41 years ago and is the world’s largest tennis management company. PBI manages 59 destinations in 24 countries. Arturo Navarro (Director of Tennis) started the academy to help young talented players improve their level and have a better chance at professional tennis. The academy training program includes a variety of components to help players become not only good players, but athletes and good people. A regular weekly schedule sample would be: 20+ hours on court training, match play; conditioning, yoga and nutrition advice. One of the main goals from the academy is to guide players reach their maximum potential and form a very strong base for
life. Our coaches approach each session in a way that each practice includes knowledge, lots of fitness and fun. Coaches encourage players to give 100% effort in each practice and to have a positive attitude. Having a strong work ethic and players that have trained in the Academy have already improved their performances in competition. Some by achieving their first ITF (International Tennis Federation) point, winning junior national Thai Championship or improving their current ITF Junior or Professional Rankings. True Arena Hua Hin is hosting 15 ITF professional tournaments in 2017. This is a fantastic opportunity for players training at the academy. They can practice and
compete with international players year round. This will help them get used to high caliber play and boost their confidence to go abroad and play tournaments. Arturo believes that the PBI Tennis Academy will be the base of not only the best Thai players, but also some of the world’s best. “It is great to see international players willing to make TAHH their training base. Current academy players are loving the opportunity and have increased their games dramatically.” If you need more information about the academy, please contact: arturo.n@ truearenahuahin.com

an’s Restaurant & Black Angus Steak House near Cicada Market is a new addition to Hua Hin’s, well-served dining repertoire. It is achieving quite a reputation. The first impression on stepping into Chef Ian’s new premises, is its distinctive ambience. The two-story, neo-colonial bungalow is set back from bustling Khao Takiab Road. Entry is via a canopy of mature, Frangipani trees shading the bromeliads and lending their waft to the evening air. Diners enjoy choices of setting: indoor air-conditioned, courtyard alfresco, or an annex for larger groups. Cuisine is Eurocentric or Thai-style, or Western-withThai-flair (from two separate kitchens) – while the menu is à la carte or of daily,
‘Chef’s creations'. But make no mistake. As the name suggests, the major feature of this new Hua Hin restaurant marching smartly up the league tables, is the masterful, creative and Savoy-trained, Chef Ian Jones, this is Ian’s show and Ian’s passion. In addition to being proprietor, Ian personally attends the local markets daily, selecting the finest ingredients (some gleaned from scarce & prized sources). Local knowledge and seasonal availability provide the inspiration for famed daily ‘Specials’, complementing an already diverse menu. Somehow, Chef Ian still generally finds time to
emerge from his kitchen to personally introduce himself to diners. First up on the night we dined was a selection of Appetizers; a creation-of-theday being a type of ‘gâteau d'aubergine’ with goat’s cheese centre, artfully surrounded by refreshing Beetroot and topped with Thai Basil – sourced from the back garden. This was followed by the shared Asian Platter; individual tempura prawns, calamari, spring rolls and samosa accompanied by a selection of three dipping sauces – tartare, aioli or lime pickle with mayonnaise. This was followed by a Soup course delicious Fennel & Carrot - accompanied by crostini.

Mains sampled were also a combination of ‘Chef’s creation’ and à la carte. First up was the Special; roasted Codfish on spring onion mash, dressed with an exquisite vierge made from sun dried tomatoes (prepared on the estate), olive oil & capers, and garnished with estate-growth asparagus. A second main dish melded the cultures; slowroasted Pork Belly (superbly crackled) served with Asian greens, Shitake mushrooms and served in green pepper sauce on a pilaf of one-year-old, Thai Hom Mali Rice. Also from the menu, a perfect, Black Angus tenderloin steak, 28

served with Portobello mushrooms and asparagus, with a red-wine sauce on the side. The steak came with a side-dish of what may be Hua Hin’s finest chips – chunky-cut and crispy. Our repast was accompanied by a precocious little Aussie, Semillon Sauvignon Blanc. Ian’s is fully licenced with Beer, Red & White wine and is working on signature Cocktails. Our event concluded with two Desert dishes. First up was the to-die-for trio of three chocolate desserts. Next came Ian’s signature desert – Sticky Toffee Pudding
liberally coated with warm toffee sauce and topped with ice-cream (all guaranteed calorie-free unless somebody sees you eating it) Chef Ian Jones trained at the Savoy in London, and worked in Portugal and Jersey, prior to venturing to pursue his profession in Asia. The comprehensive dinner menu is impossible to categorize – more ‘global’ than simply fusion reflecting as it does Chef Ian’s vast and widespread experience. The very best of Thai herbs, spices and local or seasonal delights; British (obviously); hints of
French (Duck foie gras, parfaits & confit); Italian (Mushroom ravioli); Australian Beef; NZ Lamb, though nothing identifiable from Antarctica. Food critique, Bill Marsano, opined, “The British Empire was created as a by-product of desperate Englishmen roaming the world in search of a decent meal”. Whatever, that historic global pursuit for good cuisine was wildly successful. Now, in 2017, Chef Ian Jones has combined the best of that earlier global roaming, in a part of the world
offering the very freshest of tropical and temperate ingredients, and spiced with Thailand’s emphasis on cuisine. Ian’s Restaurant & Steak House in Hua Hin, Thailand is the outcome. Ian’s Restaurant is also open for Brunch or Lunch, featuring equally stunning Esan cuisine and popular, lighter dishes – or simply for drinks. The Restaurant’s ‘Specials’ have a growing following; especially the Lamb shanks on Wednesdays, and a very reasonably priced, Sunday Roast @ 3:00pm each Sunday. The Restaurant seats only
40 – 45 persons and Reservations are recommended – phone 099 497 3040, or Messenger: @ianrestaurant. Business Hours are 12:00 noon to 22:30 daily except Mondays. Ian’s Restaurant is located on Khao Takiab Road just south of Cicada Market on the opposite side - Parking is on the street.

The Spa rooms are spacious and immediately appeal to all the senses. It was my extreme pleasure to visit the Day Spa and to be able sample just one of the many treatments available.. We had selected the Tom Yum Massage Ritual which is a 90-minute Treatment. The Tom Yum is also Putahracsa’s signature treatment, utilizing only natural ingredients as used in spa remedies of ancient times - now rediscovered and worked into the Day Spa’s new and modern techniques. A key ingredient is extract of Lemongrass, widely recognized as a natural skin toner, in an application that exfoliates and purifies while leaving
with additional training provided by Putahrasca. My friend and I were each to our respective individual treatment rooms, of which the immediate sensation is one of serenity and deep relaxation. Street clothes were exchanged for the traditional knickers, as one of the most sublime experiences of my life began.
the skin energized. A unique massage applied with a warm, sea-sand pouch, infused with lemongrass and kaffir-lime oil, stimulates blood circulation and relieves muscles soreness. Lemongrass and kaffir-lime together a just so quintessential of Thailand. On arrival for our appointment, we were met by Hostess and Spa Manager, Phadungkhwan Niamngern (Took), who explained to us our imminent treatment over a refreshing, cool drink of Lemongrass and Pandanus tea. Following our refreshing drink, we were introduced to our Masseuses – including the lovely and talented Nueng. Nueng was professional and knowledgeable, with a willingness to practice and sufficient understanding of English to readily overcome my limited Thai. Nueng is a Hua Hin local, trained in her craft at Thai Massage School,
The treatment commenced with a total body scrub – at the same time both stimulating and soothing – and with the promised lemongrass extract exfoliating and cleansing my skin. This was followed by a warm shower, necessary to remove the debris from the skin. Next came a massage of the entire body with the welcome lemongrass massage oil. As each portion of the body is completed a warm sea-sand pouch containing lemongrass and kaffir lime is applied to the area. The sensation is hot and yet soothing, serving to draw out and dissipate accumulated aches and pains, and opening the pores to envelope the lemongrass oil from the massage. The hot sand compress also serves to stimulate one’s circulation; a technique both rejuvenating and relaxing. The whole, indulgent experience is akin to being another space and zone of sheer enjoyment. It ended all to soon; the 90-minutes of sheer bliss passed so quickly. But it is an experience I would recommend to one and all. And Putahracsa has so many other treatments to sample. At the completion of our individual treatments, my friend and I reconvened in the lobby to enjoy a delicious ginger tea that seemed. Even Putahracsa Day Spa’s tea is exceptional; made fresh
on-site each day from smashed ginger, boiled in water for 2 hours, special ingredients added and served tepid. This remarkable tea is not sweet, but is complemented by small dried papaya treats coated in sugar. Together, they are a taste sensation to be treasured and remembered. Following our treatments we met in the lobby where we had a delicious ginger tea. The tea is made fresh with smashed ginger that is boiled in water for 2 hours prior to being served. It was not sweet at all, so was offset with small dried papaya treats coated in sugar. A taste sensation to be sure. Hot Score: Loved the total experience. Impeccable facility and good value for money. Affordable to the more comfortable traveler, and well worth every minute and every Baht. Most indelible memory was the great use of Lemongrass essence – observed by and admitted lemongrass addict. (The stuff is as good for you outside as it is internally!). junkie. The warm sand compresses locate, ease & dissipate more aches than you knew you had. n April 23rd at the St. Regis’s Zuma Restaurant in Bangkok, 220 of Bangkok’s food and beverage industry insiders got together to celebrate the first ever Bangkok Bar Awards. After three successful years in Singapore and Hong Kong, the Bar Awards came to Bangkok to award winners in 12 different categories. The Bar Awards process started with a public nomination period from March 1st to the 14th. Thirty-nine industry leaders representing different facets of the F & B industry then whittled the list down to the top 10 in each category before later voting for the winners. "For the first ever awards in Bangkok, we're especially proud that Bangkok's female bartenders have swept up all of The Bar Awards' individual categories," says Tron Young, one of The Editors of The Bar Awards across Asia. "We also hope this first list for Bangkok will serve to recognise the industry's best, and spur on the city's F&B players to continue to push their local scene to greater heights!"

marvellous place in which to spend a day of tranquillity on your own or with your loved ones. Let’s find out more about it. Before a full introduction to the Hat Wanakon National Park, it is important to know what legend has to say about this place. The story revolves most prominently around its islands. A tale has it that the daughter of an old couple was once courted by two men. The girl, beautiful to the sight, drew passions
amongst them both, leading the first – a Chinese boy of royal descent – to approach the woman’s father in the hopes that he would allow for him to take her hand. The second, a lad from Phetchaburi, proceeded to approach the young girl’s daughter instead. It so happened to be that neither parent knew their mother was seeing two different people, something which remained so until the day of the wedding. On this occasion, both of the grooms arrived at
The Hat Wanakon National Park is known for being the newest seaside national park in the country, having been inaugurated only twenty four years ago. Having opened its doors to the public in 1995 through a royal decree, it was previously just a silviculture premise. Attractive because of its relatively minor size, Hat Wanakon National Park is not
only the most recent, but the smallest of national parks in Thailand, something which makes exploring it a very handy feat. Covering a total of thirty eight square kilometres, it is the ideal place to go to for a weekend escapade from the capital through a three hour drive. Almost sixty percent of the park is land, whilst about forty percent is based under water. This includes a stretch of beach and goes into the sea for some six kilometres – encompassing the two “present” islands from which the legend grows – and a large body of water. The park is home to number of different varieties plants and trees such as queen’s flower, the Makhamong, the crape myrtle, the Indian thorny bamboo and the Burmese rosewood. The stretch of sandy beach across the park is very clean and well maintained, something which attracts a great quantity of fauna to the area. The varieties of animals is vast. More than sixty types of wildlife can be found in the area. Amongst them are the porcupine, the tree shrew, the squirrel, the Burmese hare, the skink, the golden
jackal, the squirrel and various types of snake. Birds can also be found aplenty, as more than forty eight types populate the area. Bird watching is a common hobby amongst people who make their way to the park to witness the range of its diverse avian variety. Some of the birds that can be found are the pacific reef egret, the black Drongo, the black naped oriole, the blue tailed bee eater and the Indian roller. Meanwhile, the seas are also a place to find a large variety of the aquatic creatures at the national park. These fish range from common to more unique species, including the snakehead fish, the walking cat fish, the Nile tilapia and the climbing perch. There are also nonfish species, reptiles and crustaceans, amongst them are the shrimp, a wide variety of turtle species and even dolphins, which are known to inhabit the deeper waters and can at times be seen from the shoreline.
v
once, something which displeased both parents. They quarrelled for the right of having their daughter marry the man they each wanted and caused a scene difficult to digest. The father, enraged, proceeded to blame her for such scenario and did the unthinkable: in a bout of rage, he took his daughter and tore her in half, claiming the suitors could each marry half of his daughter. He threw one of her halves to the sea just off of Khao Sam Roy Yod and formed one of the islands called Nomsao. The other half he chucked east, this fell near Chonburi and formed Nomsao Island. He then went ahead and threw the wedding presents into the sea too, forming the two isles of Chan and Thaisi.

But how about the landscape? What is it like for the hitchhiking fanatic or for those who enjoy the long relaxing walks? Hat Wanakon National Park sits on a fine shoreline which extends all the way up to the peaks of the Tenasserim Hills, which separate Thailand from Myanmar through the creation of a natural border. This makes the balance between trekking the mountains and strolling on the beach not only something beautiful, but activities accessible to visitors in a single day. There are several trails that hikers can take, amongst them the Hua Krang and the Hin Chuang nature trails, which extend two kilometers and three and a half kilometers respectively. Hua Krang leads you on a casual two hour stroll, whilst the Hin Chuang route takes about three hours. The trails take you through a large variety of flora, including a large array of mango trees and bamboo trees. Other curious features that can be seen are many different ant hills and termite mounds. There are a variety of beaches famous at the park. The most prominent one is Wanakon beach, which on days of low tide extends up to a hundred and fifty metres into the water, allowing for visitors to venture into the sand and feel as if they’re endlessly walking out to the shoreline. It is common amongst visitors to venture into the park at dawn and watch the shining sun rise above the crystalline shoreline. This part of the beach gets a remarkable amount of breeze, which makes for a cool atmosphere even during the hottest days of the year during which Thailand can become a grueling hot pot. Other sites to visit are Makha Bay, a river bed composed of a mix between reefs and banks. The sites from this area are of great attraction to visitors, who often remain there for hours. Getting to Hat Wanakon National Park is easy and can be done through a number of ways. The most convenient way is by car, as it is located at an hour and a half from nearby Hua Hin. If you would rather take your time and do not mind travelling with a group however, you can always take the bus, both airconditioned or not – though the former is recommended for the commodity. As a whole, the Hat Wanakon National Park is a site that must be visited for sure if you’re an avid lover of nature, of the sea, of the mountainside or of both. This relatively new park is the perfect place in which to spend a few casual hours or days getting your fill of the beach, hills, sun, wildlife, flora and seaside breeze. If you have yet to go, you’re definitely missing out.

Her path to where she is today started when she was a young woman teaching transcendental meditation at a meditation center. It was a non-paying job and she slept on the floor. She loved teaching meditation and loved being around spiritual people. She was offered a Silicon Valley job with the possibility of making lots of money but it turned out to be a job she hated as she felt un-
fulfilled. One day she saw a flyer for a Success Seminar in San Francisco. At the Seminar, the speaker said that the top 100 successful people in the United States were all doing what they considered to be their top 5 passions. And with that, the light bulb switched on. Janet thought to herself that if she could figure out what her top 5 passions were then she could be successful. It was through that self-discovery that the Passion Test was born. In addition to writing books and giving seminar’s, Janet, and her group teach people to become Certified Passion Test Facilitators. They have trained over 2,500 facilitators in 65 countries to teach the Passion Test to others. HOT Magazine recently had the very distinct pleasure of sitting down with Janet to discuss her life, her Passion Test Program and the positive life transformations that are happening on a global scale. HM: Janet, you have such a beaming, happy, positive attitude that radiates from you. What was your life like growing up, where were you born and do your siblings have a similar outlook? JA: My mom used to tell me I was born passionate. She said my brother Johnny who was 2 years older than me, and my sister Mickey who was 5 years older than me, unfortunately, didn’t have the same enthusiasm as I did for life. My mom used to say it was no surprise that I was born in California because I had as much energy as the California sunshine. As a child, I had the most magical relationship with my mom. My brother Johnny, and my sister Mickey, and even my dad, were all a little jealous of the amazing relationship we had. When I started kindergarten, my mom would miss me so much she would tell
the school principal that I had to go to the doctor, just so she and I could play together. We’d watch our favorite Shirley Temple movies in bed and eat “fishes in the dishes” – sardines and crackers. Our connection was truly magical. However, when I was seven, my mom’s demons came back to haunt her and she became an alcoholic. My world cracked open. As a child, my first thought was, “Did I do this?” From then on I became a very misunderstood and very unhappy person and until my early twenties, my world had become a nightmare. Then I learned how to meditate, and opened myself up to the world of self help. It was then everything started to change. HM: In interviews you’ve mentioned that you had your epiphany moment after listening to a speaker at a success seminar in San Francisco. Was it truly at that moment that you saw your life’s path ahead of you? JA: Yes. I remember the moment as if it were yesterday. I was sitting in a seminar in San Francisco, California and the speaker started sharing about a survey that had been given to the 100 most successful people in the United States, and what the survey had found, was that all 100 of these people were all living what they considered to be their top 5 passions. When I heard that my whole world stopped. I remember the seminar leader went on to talk about “dressing for success” but I was frozen, all I could think about was, “if I could just figure out how to know what my top 5 passions were, I’d be like all those other successful people.” In that moment, many years ago, sitting in that seminar, was the birth of what is now known all over the world as “The Passion Test®,” the number one tool to help you get clear about the things that matter most to you, your passions.

HM: The Passion Test® has become such a global phenomenon, what can you tell us about it? Is it a single test or multiple tests? JA: The Passion Test® is the only test you will never fail. Its one exercise after another to help you gain a level of clarity about the areas of your life that are important. Health, relationships, career, spirituality, fun, environment, education, etc. Once you start to get clear on you're your passions are in these areas, then you can start to magnetize those things to you. What we say in “The Passion Test®,” is “When you are clear, what you choose to have show up in your life will, and only to the extent that you are clear. That, clarity is power.” Our passions, the things we love most in life, are the pipelines to our soul. They put us in direct connection with the deepest part of our own nature. It doesn't matter how silly or how profound the things we love may be, when we choose in favor of them, they will lead us on to the fulfillment of our purpose in life. This is the role and purpose of The Passion Test®, to systematically allow each of us to gain clarity about what we love, about what really matters to us. Once we've done that, then our simple (or sometimes challenging) task is to choose for what we love. HM: What is the number one thing that stops people from living a passionate life? JA: 3 things: False beliefs, false ideas, false concepts. In other words, thoughts like: •
I can’t make money from the things I’m passionate about
•
I don’t have the skills to be really successful
•
I don’t know enough
•
I’m too old. It’s too late for me.
The reality is that these limiting beliefs are thoughts you hold that are Simply not true. They are our of sync with reality. How long it takes you to fulfill your dreams is directly related to your beliefs. When you feel truly passionate about something, you will always have the ability to create it in your life. You’re too old? Do you know that most 58

millionaires are made after the age of fifty-five. While he cooked chicken for years, it wasn’t until Colonel Sanders was sixty-two that he started Kentucky Fried Chicken. No matter what limiting belief you hold, there is evidence in the world to the contrary. Even if there is no one who have ever done what you are passionate about doing, there is abundant evidence of people who have been successfully doing what others thought was impossible. HM: Many people live a day to day existence without a compass showing them the way to a more fulfilled life. Is that dealt with when taking the passion test? JA: Yes, one of the things we tell people is that “Your passions are breadcrumbs that lead you on to the path of your destiny.” We repeat over and over that you are constantly creating your life, we all are. We create our lives out of the things to which we give our attention, and you attract into your life more of what you put your attention on. If your attention is on the things you don’t have, all the problems in your life, all the bad things that are happening to you, then you are creating more of that. If you want more problems, more challenges, more unhappiness, then give attention to those things. If you want to find your purpose and live a passion filled life, then give your attention to the things that create those feelings. When you discover your deepest passions, you connect with the essence of who you are. The key to success in life is to live aligned with your passions and your personal destiny will unfold naturally and effortlessly.

HM: In your seminars you teach a formula for a passionate life that entails 3 words; intention, attention and no tension. Can you expand on those 3 words for us? JA: Intention - Attention - No Tension Intention means consciously stating what you choose to create in your life. We all are creating our lives all the time. It's just that most people do it unconsciously. They believe that things are happening TO them, and as a result, that's what they create. The Passion Test® process allows you to clarify your intentions so that you can begin living them. Attention - "What you put your attention on grows stronger in your life." In The Passion Test we say that "Action engages attention." Taking whatever action you can think to take in support of following your passions keeps your attention engaged in living those passions. No Tension - This is the element many people miss. There are two aspects to "no tension." The first is to perform action from that state of calmness and peace inside. Developing that habit of living from a state of inner peace is why Transcendental Meditation® (www. tm.org) has been such an important part of my life. Once you have done all you can think to do, then let go. When you hold on to your own ideas of how your passions will get fulfilled, it's like stepping on your own hose. The flow of infinite intelligence is cut off. In my experience, you can't know how fulfillment will show up in your life. This is why one of the seven keys to living a passionate life my book, “The Passion Test®” is: "Stay Open." HM: You have said, “Living your passion is living in your integrity”, what do you mean by that? JA: Science talks about how we don’t exist in isolation. That each of us are part of a unified field. Imagine if everyone on the planet were living their passions full out and giving maximum to the world. What would our world be like? Pretty amazing wouldn’t you agree? So how does one give maximum? By getting clear on the things that matter most to them and consistently choosing in favor of those things whenever faced with a choice, a decision or an opportunity. Always choosing in favor of your passions. Staying true, no matter what, to the things that have greatest meaning and purpose for you. When you can give maximum to yourself, by choosing in favor of your passions, that is how you can give maximum to others. HM: From your bestselling books and your seminars, you have come to 60

know and work with such luminaries as the Dalai Lama, Sir Richard Branson, Stephen Covey, Nobel Laureate F. W. deKlerk amongst many other notables. What’s it like being in a room with such major cultural personalities? JA: Exciting, fun, joyful, passionate, loving, all of the good feelings, seriously! These giants have trained their minds to consistently choose in favor of the things that have greatest meaning for them. Plus, they don’t put their attention on limiting beliefs. Because of this, they are powerful beyond measure. And because of this, just being who they are, teaches others how to be more fearless and resolute in following their dreams and passions. They are what I call, “the teachers living the teaching.” Which means that just their mere presence uplifts all those around them. Does it get any better than this?! HM: To take the passion test, do people need to buy your book or can it be taken on-line? JA: There are many ways you can take “The Passion Test.” One way is by reading the book, another way is by attending one of our online programs, or you can experience it “live” by one of our 2500 Certified Passion Test facilitators in over 65 countries. To find out a way that is best for you, go to www. thepassiontest.com HM: You are in Bangkok to give a seminar from April 28th to the 30th and then off to Helsinki. For people who would like to hear you speak live, how do they learn when you will be in Thailand again? JA: They can contact Kitti Thirat kitti@ thepassiontest.com who is the National Director of The Passion Test Programs in Thailand or again, log on to The Passion Test® website and look under “courses”. HM: Finally, when we spoke last, you had commented on your constant travel, country after country after country. Do you ever take a holiday and if so, where do you like to go to recharge your batteries and where is home for you? JA: Seriously? My life is a holiday. One of my passions is to love everything I do, so I always make sure no matter where I am or what I am doing, there is lots of fun attached to my agenda. And, to answer your question, I have two homes. One in a little town called “Rungsted” in Denmark which overlooks the ocean, and the other home is in Italy, in a beautiful forested area called Gignese, that overlooks the majestic lake, Lago Maggiore.

Samui Regatta sets the standard for sports tourism on Samui Island
S
amui Island is famous for its white-sand beaches, warm blue sea, shimmering coconut palms and its picture-postcard tropical appeal, but few are aware of its position as a leading sports tourism destination. The Thai government has a clear policy to promote sports tourism, attracting more international events and sports people to the country, and Samui Island has hosted a number of world-class international sports events the largest and longest running being the Samui Regatta.
Turning 16 this year, Samui Regatta has grown to attract the best yachts in Asia and a large spectator following who come to Samui for great sailing, excellent beach parties and to experience the island's acclaimed hospitality. Regattas Asia, organisers of Samui Regatta, recently undertook a survey of participants and the findings underscore the importance of the event to the local economy. “Samui Regatta contributes significant revenues to the local economy every year. Most of the 500 or so participants come from overseas to compete and have high disposable incomes. The majority stay for 7-10 days during the regatta and our research shows that spend on food and accommodation only, is a minimum 62

of 5,000THB/ person/ day. This does not include spend on flights, travel around the island, and other lifestyle and entertainment expenditure,” said Ms. Kae Wattana, Managing Director of organisers Regattas Asia. The survey's findings are for the regatta period only and do not take into account holiday time either side of the regatta and return visits to Samui during the year. In addition to being a tourism destination known worldwide for its natural beauty, island culture and delicious cuisine, Samui Island has built a reputation as being a leading yachting destination in the region. “Samui Island is one of the top tourism and yachting destinations in Asia. We have organised Samui Regatta for 15 years and each year we se the number of yachts that come to the island is growing. I believe this growth will continue as more and more people experience the beauty of Samui and the unmatched sailing it has to offer,” commented Ms. Wattana. “This year we will again have a spectator boat at Samui Regatta which members of the public and tourists can join to experience the event and learn more about yachting. Our aim is bring
the event and yachting closer to people, to increase people's understanding of yachting, and to attract more visitors to Samui Island,” added Ms. Wattana. Samui Regatta consists of five days of racing and six nights of parties, including daily prize-givings on the beach and a lavish Gala Dinner hosted by Centara Grand Beach Resort Samui on the final night. The spectator boat costs 800THB/ person/ day (contact Miss Emily +66 (0) 83 638 2966) and tickets are available for the daily prize-givings at 1,000THB/ person/ night (contact Miss Lily +66 (0) 98 269 8735) and for the Gala Dinner at 2,500THB/ person (contact Miss Katreeya +66 (0) 94 159 4926). The 16th Samui Regatta will take place 20th to 27th May, 2017 headquartered at Centara Grand Beach Resort Samui and is the season-ending event in the AsianYachting Grand Prix championship. The regatta is organised by Regattas Asia in conjunction with the Samui Yacht Club Regatta, under the auspices of the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, the Municipal of Koh Samui and the Sports Authority of Thailand.

Top of the Gulf Regatta Sailed into its 13th Year
T
hailand's award-winning Top of the Gulf Regatta Presented by Ocean Marina delivered a challenging mix of sailing conditions for the near 200-strong fleet who competed May 4th thru 8th. Organised by Pattaya’s Ocean Marina Yacht Club, South East Asia's largest marina, the regatta is Thailand's only marina-based regatta and provided an excellent on-water and onshore experience for the more than 700 sailors that took part this year. Racing went down to the wire in all classes and the final day turned on the goods for the keelboat and multihull classes, showcasing the Gulf of Thailand at its best – 15-20 knots of breeze, sunny skies and warm weather sailing – and was proclaimed the “best day of the regatta” by all. Previously unbeaten in its first season on the Asian circuit, the TP52 THA 72 (THA), skippered by Kevin Whitcraft,

had struggled in the lighter airs early in the series and over the short windwardleeward courses was struggling on IRC against the smaller 40-footers in the class. The term “IRC” refers to the handicapping system regattas around this part of the world use for sailing races. As most boats are different (in design, size, length, weight etc. etc.) there needs to be a handicap applied to create a level playing field in each class. Emagine, the modified Sydney 40 skippered by Scott Bradley, having traveled from it's home-base in Phuket, was enjoying its first Top of the Gulf Regatta and finished the series with a 2,1,1,2,1,2,2,[3] scoreline, claiming the IRC Racing 1 title at the first time of trying. A win in the final race for THA 72 was enough to tie them on points with the rapidly improving Club Swan 42 Loco (USA), skippered by David Dimmock, and THA72 were awarded second place on count back.
Ocean Marina Yacht Club has become the home of one-design racing in Asia with 15 identical 25-foot Farr Platus based at the marina and a four-race Platu series being held each year. The jewel in the crown of the series is the Platu Coronation Cup which, first started in 1996, is now incorporated in the Top of the Gulf Regatta and this year welcomed 11 teams from the Netherlands, Australia, Russia, United Kingdom, Singapore and Thailand. Known for its close and competitive racing, this year did not disappoint as the winner was decided on the final run of the last race on the final day of the regatta. With the Russian team lead by Valeriy Dichenko comfortably ahead in the race, Rolf Heemskerk (Team Viewpoint), Chris Way (Easy Tiger 111), Ithinai Yingsiri (Pine-Pacific) and Colin Simonds (Wikki) were four-abreast, spinnakers up on the final run to the line.

The race for first overall was between Heemskerk and Way, and having previously tied in 2012, when the count back broke in Way's favour, this year it was to be sweet revenge for Heemskerk as he caught the final puff to finished second in the race, one second ahead of Ithinai Yingsiri with Chris Way and crew one second behind Colin Simonds in fifth. The final series result saw a tie at the top between Heemskerk and Way with the count back this time breaking in favour of Rolf Heemskerk and his crew on Team Viewpoint. The “count back is another yacht racing term that refers to when boats are tied on points. When this happens, they look back at how many first places each boat had, how many second places, how many thirds etc. until they find one boat that has more than the other, and that one is then declared the winner by count back. Close racing underscored IRC Racing 3 with all in the class finishing on the podium during their eight race series. However, with six wins from eight there was no denying the clear winner, El Coyote (AUS), skippered by Gary Baguley. Martin Brown's Nautical Wheeler (USA) managed to hold on for second place with local stalwart David Bell and his crew on Magic (AUS) finishing third. Despite a protest by Lady Bubbly (AUS) in the final race, which they won, it did not affect the results as four wins from five races saw them comfortably win the Cruising class title ahead of Le Vent (THA) in second and Thida Waree (AUS) third.
HOT Magazine

Elsewhere on the course, the Ocean Multihulls class finished their series with a single race and a win was enough for Kirati Assakul and his crew on Sonic (THA) to defend their title from Bladerunner 7 (UK). The Laser Standard, Laser Radial and Laser 4.7 finished their series a day earlier, as did the 420s and 470s. Also racing over three days were the Optimist fleet who were competing for Thailand's premier youth sailing trophy, the Thailand Optimist National Championships. A storm, followed by fickle winds on the final day saw the race-card shortened and in Optimist Fleet A it was Thai youngster Panwa Boonnak who edged the win and was crowned the 2017 Thailand Optimist National Champion. Jedtavee Yongyuennan finished second and two international entries Mic Mohr (CRI) and Duncan Gregor (HKG), finished third and fourth respectively. The 2017 Top of the Gulf Regatta will go down as a success – success in terms of sailing and all round fun, hospitality, and as an excellent showcase for the Gulf of Thailand. Essential in the regatta's success is the support received from the Sports Authority of Thailand, Tourism Authority of Thailand, Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, Pattaya City, Royal Varuna Yacht Club and the Royal Thai Navy, as well as event sponsors and partners.
