Dear Reader, Welcome to our first issue of 2015 and our transformation from HOT Hua Hin Magazine to HOT Magazine - Hua Hin, Bangkok. With so many Hua Hinian’s traveling to Bangkok regularly and well over 29,000 Thai’s visiting Hua Hin every week, with the vast majority of those coming from Bangkok, we realized that we are better able to serve our readers and our advertisers by expanding our Bangkok coverage, hence the name change. This month’s issue starts off with our coverage of the World Tennis Thailand Championship held at Centennial Park from December 31st to January 2nd. Six tennis professionals, all from different countries, competed in the tournament to the delight of those who attended. Check out the on-court action on page 18. Vana Nava, Hua Hin’s 1 billion baht water jungle opened on December 1st and have had capacity crowds ever since. In addition to the fabulous water park it is also a great music venue. View the park and New Year’s countdown on page 28. On Dec 22nd Miss Hua Hin CDL (see Dec. issue) made the 19 hour journey to the province of Tak to visit impoverished Thai and Karen children. Thanks to the donations from Hua Hin businesses and private individuals, she and her entourage were able to give much needed blankets and school supplies to the adorable children in this mountain village, page 38. Our HOT Getaway this month takes us to Tha Song Yang district, also in the Tak Province where we visit the Mae Moei National Park. The whole area is rustic and is definitely not “touristy” but it does show the true natural beauty of Amazing Thailand, that’s on page 70. Finally, a recent event took place in Bangkok that brought many of Thailand’s Beauty Pageant winners together in an effort to raise awareness to their campaign to stop cruelty to animals. A wonderful cause indeed and we cover it on page 32. The start of the new year begins a new chapter in all of our lives. We at HOT Magazine hope your chapter entitled 2015 is filled with adventure, happiness, hijinks and good health!

HUA HIN EXECUTIVE PROFILE What is your full name and age? Brian Anderson 51 years old. What is your current Job Position? Sustainable Development Manager at Chiva-Som International Health Resorts Co., Ltd. How long have you lived in Hua Hin or been coming to Hua Hin? I have lived in Hua Hin since 2002. What did you know about Hua Hin before you moved here? I just happened upon it in 1999 for an overnight stop on the way to Koh Samui. I didn’t know anything about Hua Hin, but I do remember it was much less developed at that time. When I look at it now, I think ‘wow, what’s going on?’ Now there is so much and so much to do, you can get almost everything here. I remember many years ago I had to go all the way to Petchaburi to buy a television and computer. What do you like most about your profession? Chiva-Som is a luxury health resort and the employees here are great, which makes getting things done easier with a lot of support. Otherwise, I am responsible for reducing the resort’s ecological footprint by implementing energy-saving technologies, natural resource practices and waste reduction initiatives to decrease carbon emissions and operating costs. We have a collective focus on the Quadruple Bottom Line where the outcomes directly benefit the value chain and help to ensure sustainable business success through an integrative CSR framework. It’s also good to be part of the Preserve Hua Hin Group, which was founded by Chiva-Som in 2004 to raise awareness on environmental preservation and promote community interaction and engagement. We are currently developing MEPSEC Hua Hin (Mangrove Ecosystem Preservation & Science Education Center) in the last remaining urban mangrove in Hua Hin. It is a collaboration with the scientists, academics and students of Silpakorn University, partnering Corporate Social Responsibility with University Social Responsibility. MEPSEC Hua Hin will be open to the general public late in 2015. What do you like the least about your profession? I would say that there’s so much to do in such little time. Another annoyance in the hospitality sector of the travel and tourism industry is all the waste that is generated. Solid waste materials mostly from packaging, waste water, waste energy and waste food. All

Brian Anderson businesses produce a lot of waste but we are doing what we can to minimize the amount sent to landfill. What do you like most about Hua Hin? Living in a small town near the sea is great but I believe the most appealing aspect is the multicultural community with so many activities and events going on. Unfortunately there are not enough days in the week to join all of them. We have a lot of friends here so there’s never a dull moment. Hua Hin offers so many social opportunities so there’s always something to look forward to. What is your favorite Restaurant locally and why? My first choice would be La Grappa, not only for the fine dining experience, but I like the proprietors Peter and Nee Kirketerp. I like Lizzy, too, so maybe she should open a restaurant. What do you like to do in your free time and why? I don’t like to do anything in my free time, that is if I get any free time. I’m a member of the Rotary Club of Royal Hua Hin and the SKAL Hua Hin & Chaam Club which takes some evening time. I do farm work as well, which is grounding and good exercise. What would you recommend to new comers to do in Hua Hin? And Why? Firstly I would encourage them to learn Thai. Not only does it make life easier, it surely facilitates engagement with the locals who can be the most friendly and supportive people around. Also, I would

recommend them to join the Rotary Club or join another community development organization. Fifteen nationalities in the Rotary Club but we use English for communication. Rotarians have broad and diverse backgrounds so the conversation and interaction is always supportive and interesting. Tell us a surprising fact that public might not know about you? Many are surprised that I raise turkeys. All American freerange pastured birds without added growth hormones or antibiotics. Turkeys are interesting fowl like my friends. Some of them remind me of turkeys as well. Don’t ask who, please. Organic farming is next on the list. Too often we consume fresh produce in blind faith, not knowing what it has been treated with. What is the most outlandish thing you have ever done? Why? Outlandish? I’m not even sure what it really means. If you asked my relatives in the US, they would probably say it’s outlandish that I live half-way around the globe. It all started out as an adventure and somehow here we are today. There are so many residents of various nationalities living here so you’re guaranteed an interesting experience wherever you might go in town. I think maybe the local community could be outlandish.

W

orld class tennis once again reigned supreme in Hua Hin as top competitors from around the world battled it out in Centennial Park. Six players, all from different countries and all ranked in the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) top 20 competed in the World Tennis Thailand Championship 2015.

The format was a little different than in years past with a 3 day tournament, best of 3 sets with a tie break for each set. To qualify for the tournament players had to have been in the TPA top 20 or won an ATP tournament in 2014. Those competing for the title were; Tomas Berdych ATP #7 29 year old Tomas Berdych, a Czech national, began playing tennis at 5 and soon became a top junior. In 2013 he was The No. 1 player from the Czech Republic and finished in the ATP Top 10 four years in a row reaching Quarter Finals or better in 15 of 23 international tournaments. His most notable achievement was reaching the final of the 2010 Wimbledon Championships, causing consecutive upsets by defeating top seed and six-time champion Roger Federer in the quarterfinals, and World No. 3 Novak Djokovic in the semifinals. In the final, he lost to Rafael Nadal in straight sets. Berdych ended the 2014 season with a 55-22 match record, including two titles and $3,899,534 in prize money. David Ferrer ATP #5 32 year old David Ferrer from Spain turned pro in 2000. In the first years of his career he was 20

known as a clay-court specialist, having won half of his titles on the surface. In 2013 he was the No. 2 Spaniard, behind Rafael Nadal and finished a year-end best No. 3, his 3rd year in a row in the Top 5. It was also his 4th straight year where he won at least 55 matches. Ferrer reached a career-high 9 finals, winning his 3rd straight year in Auckland. On February 16th 2014 he became the first player to win 3 straight Buenos Aires titles, marking his 3rd threepeat on the ATP World Tour. Ferrer ended his 2014 season with a 54-24 match record, including one title and $2,809, 026 in prize money. Richard Gasquet ATP #14 28 year old Richard Gasquet is French and began playing tennis at age four with his father, Francis, who ran tennis club in Serignan. In 2013 he finished in the Top 10 for his 2nd year in a row, 3rd overall, and as top Frenchman for 1st time since 2007. The year also saw him winning 3 titles for 1st time since ‘06 and a personal-best 50 matches. Gasquet ended the 2014 season with a 31-19 singles match record and $847,265 in prize money.

Mios Raonic ATP #6 23 year old Milos Raonic is a Canadian professional tennis player of Montenegrin origin who grew up in Thornhill, Ontario. In 2013 he advanced to 4 finals (2-2) for his 2nd year in a row and won his 5th career title in Bangkok in a doubles match with Tomas Berdych and he was a runner-up at Tokyo. Raonic ended his 2014 season with a 4920 match record, including one title and $3,494,480 in prize money. John Isner ATP #15 29 year old John Isner is an American professional tennis player who started playing tennis at nine and is considered to be one of the greatest servers the game has ever seen. In 2013 he was the top American for the 2nd straight year at No. 14 and finished in the Top 20 for his 4th year in a row. His best stretch came during North American summer circuit with 16-4 record. Fabio Fognini ATP #17 27 year old Fabio Fognini is from Italy and currently Italy’s top player. His career high singles ranking is 13th in the World which he attained in March of 2014. In 2013 Fabio, who began playing tennis at age 4, became the 1st Italian player to finish in the Top 20 since Corrado Barazzutti was No. 10 in 1978. That year he also captured back-toback ATP World Tour titles in Germany en-route to a personal-high 13-match winning streak and earned him a total of $1,480,993, the most prize money won by an Italian.

The World Tennis Thailand Championship 2015 started on Wednesday Dec, 31st with two matches. The first was with Ferrer playing against Gasquet. Gasquet had spent time with Rafael Nadal to prepare for the new season but it didn’t help him in Hua Hin as Ferrer won the match in three sets. Next up was Fognini who bested John Isner. Both winners moved up to the semi-finals. New Year’s Day saw both Tomas Berdych and David Ferrer playing at the top of their game but after 3 sets it was Berdych the victor winning 6-3, 6-7, 6-2. Next up was Mios Raonic versus Fabio Fognini with Raonic taking the match in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.

The last day of the tournament’s first match was between Ferrer and Fognini to determine who would take third place. That honor went to David Ferrer beating Fabio of Italy 6-2, 6-0. The final match of the 3 day tournament which determined who was going home with the trophy and the cash was between Berdych and Milos Raonic. The set scores were 7-6, 7-4 & 6-3 with Berdych winning the World Tennis Thailand Championship. The triumph made amends for his loss in the final of the 2013 ATP Thailand Open. The six man Hua Hin event was launched to replace the ATP Thailand Open. “For me it’s not revenge, it’s good to

begin the year with a win. I’m pleased with that and I hope I can improve my game. I’m looking forward to the coming season with good results”, Berdych was quoted as saying. The tournament purse was US $100,000 with the winner of each match receiving $10,000 and the champion $40,000. The President of the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand, Khun Suwat Liptapanlop said “I believe from the impressions players and fans have from this event, we will make it the tournament of the country in the future. We shall have this tournament again next year but we may have to change the format to make it even more exciting for the fans”.

little after midnight on Dec 22nd Khun Pornthavee Puyardfar, the newly crowned Miss Hua Hin C.D.L. (Charity and Dog Lover), along with Tanya Vijitsirisomphong, managing editor of this magazine, her mother, Mimi Tao and Panadda Phonthep left Hua Hin for the 15 hour journey to Tha Song Yang, a mountainous area in the far north of Thailand to visit the children at the Koi Chiang Kaew school. Students at the school are aged 4 thru 6 and include Thai and Karen children. The Karen people have lived in Burma (Myanmar) for centuries and currently make up approximately 7 percent of the total Burmese population with

approximately 5 million people. A large number of Karen have migrated to Thailand, having settled mostly on the Thai Karen Border. Arriving to this area is like going back 100 years or more. There is no electricity or running water from taps within the homes. Drinking water is collected at a communal water pipe. At the school, most of the floors in the one-story buildings are dirt and too many children don’t have shoes to wear. With the weather in Thailand becoming much cooler, especially in the mountains, Mimi Tao’s cousin, a teacher at the Chiang Kaew School, alerted her to the dire need for blankets to keep the children warm at

night among many other basic items. Mimi told Tanya who then reached out to the Hua Hin business community for donations to help these impoverished children. Orchid Palm Homes along with Lizzy from Hua Hin Multi Cult were the first and most generous in their donations with other sizable contributions coming from many businesses and private individuals in Hua Hin. 100 blankets were purchased for the school children and the elderly who live in the village. Notebooks, pencils and other school items were also purchased as well as stuffed toy animals.

On Monday the 23rd the school children were thrilled to welcome their guests bearing gifts. Miss Hua Hin CDL and her entourage spent the day with the children, providing a lunch, engaging them in games and doling out gifts. For many, the stuffed animals each child received were the first toys they ever owned and even the boys had wide smiles as they clutched on to them. Upon leaving Miss Hua Hin CDL presented the teacher with money to buy 2 pairs of shoes for each child and promised a return trip with rain gear when the rainy season begins. If you would like to help the children of Tha Song Yang please email tanya@hothuahin.com.

HO T FOOD REVIEW Black Mountain Gourmet

HOT MAGAZINE RECOMMEND

“Chef Sica’s blow me away menu!”

T

he HOT Magazine team had the extreme good fortune to be invited to review the newly minted Black Mountain Gourmet restaurant on Naresdamri Road. The Black Mountain Gourmet restaurant is part of the Black Mountain chain including Black Mountain Golf Resort, Black Mountain Waterpark and so on. The Black Mountain management is well known for quality and class and Black Mountain Gourmet fits right into this group. Located prominently in town close

to Hilton Hua Hin and run by renowned Luigi Sica a very experienced chef. The restaurant serves in Black Mountain teams own words “classic Mediterranean dishes, with top-class steaks as a speciality”. Now those words are true but they serve up so much as you will see from this food review. But first more about the restaurant itself, specifically the décor and ambiance. Black Mountain team wanted to open a Fine dining restaurant in the form of Black Mountain Gourmet in Hua Hin

and the décor definitely reflects this aim. Decorated in dark luxurious colours with artworks and accents in glass, such as a stunning glass staircase leading to the second floor, this place exudes class and refinement. Everything from the cutlery to the hushed attentive service tells you already at the start that this will be a dinner to remember. The dinner for us and I suspect all guests start with assortment of homemade breads and pizza type slices served with condiments such as two types of

HOT SCORE

flavoured butter. As usual when there is good bread I eat as much as I can which in this case was a big mistake as we were about to be served ten more dishes! Our dinner proper started with French duck foie gras served on toast and I have to say this was a sure way to get my eternal support for this restaurant. Next came the restaurants best seller and I understand why, the Lobster soup with Canadian lobster meat, infused with Hennessy X.O Cognac including a sizable lobster claw. This is the best Lobster Bisque I have had, ever. Light yet creamy with a nice blend of lobster taste without being heavy or too fishy. Following this came the Wagyu beef Carpaccio with celery salad and Gorgonzola cheese mousse a nice and light dish to set us off for the more hard core stuff. The Gorgonzola mousse added a nice twang to the Carpaccio and this too was gobbled up, happily I might add. For one of the main courses we tried the Paccheri pasta with fresh tomatoes sauce, basil and Stracciatella cheese. This dish is a very nice truly Italian tasting pasta, with fresh ingredients shining through and light as the Italians like to cook their pasta. Next came the slow cooked filet of French sea bass, served with local mushrooms, Thai kale fried in chilly and garlic oil, coconut milk & lemongrass sauce. This dish is very nice dish for those that love Fish with a nice mix of Thai herbs with an Italian way of cooking and the presentation was beautiful. The owner of Hot Magazine a fish dish lover and she really enjoyed this dish and made it hard to get fork in. The last main course dish, came in the

form of the Wagyu beef tenderloin with blue cheese, potatoes mousseline and Madeira truffle sauce. This dish should really have its own food review. An absolutely stunningly plated dish and delicious, this is the item I could see, would keep regulars coming back again and again. I know Wagyu beef is anyways supposed to be the crème de la crème of beef, but this Wagyu dish was the best I have had for a long time. With a cutting constancy, like cutting into a soft butter it melted even before hitting your mouth. The vegetables, the potatoes and the truffle sauce made it a meat eaters dream. At this point I really did not think I could eat anymore but it is amazing how I can sacrifice myself when it comes to desserts! A trio of Chef Sica’s favourites appeared in the form of Date tar-tar marinated in rum, with pear ice cream and cinnamon sauce, Sweet strawberries with lemon and vanilla foam and last but not least Cannolo (a traditional Italian sweat treat), stuffed with ricotta cheese, tomato jam and basil ice cream appeared. I have to say the Canello was sensational according to Chef Sica to truly enjoy it, it is best is to grab a bit of Ricotta, a bit of tomato yam and the basil ice cream in each spoonful to get the full impact on the harmony of various tastes textures. I have to say the Basil Ice cream might have become my favourite now ice cream flavour, who knew Basil could be put in a dessert! The date tartar was delicious but it was the Sweet strawberry with lemon and Vanilla foam that brought me right back to summers in Europe in a good way. This was the dessert I personally would order again when I return to Black Mountain Gourmet.

I think I have made it clear I am very impressed with Black Mountain Gourmet, Chef Sica and the food. I liked all of it but if I have to choose my top 3 from the dishes it would be the stunning Lobster Soup, the Wagyu beef tenderloin and the Strawberry dessert. The lobster Soup is amazingly good period. The Wagyu beef is to die for, don’t take my word for it, get dressed up and bring a loved one to try it. And believe it or not the humble Strawberry with lemon and Vanilla foam dessert totally stole my heart and my taste buds. The dessert was light, airy, acidic, sweet, fresh and brought back taste memories from long ago of summers in Europe. Loved it! All in all this restaurant has it all; great chef, fab décor, attentive service and great ambiance. Maybe on the pricy side but you pay for what you get this is fine dining in more than one way. Amazing! Black Mountain Gourmet 162/5 Naresdamri Road, Hua Hin Tel No: 093 583 4199

HO T SPA REVIEW

HOT MAGAZINE RECOMMEND

The Spa @ Hilton

I

have visited the The Spa, the in-house Spa of Hilton Hua Hin Resort & Spa before but I was excited to see what was new with their treatment menu. The Spa is set up conveniently just a short staircase from the lobby and has a distinctively different feel to the rest of the hotel. Whereas the hotel is modern with Asian touches The Spa is very Thai in design as the design brief was to use ancient Khmer architecture as an influence. The Spa features wooden floors, dĂŠcor items that evoke Thai tradition with burst of color in pillows and decorative items. The Spa has ten luxurious treatment rooms set in a tranquil corridor and all rooms have traditional doors. The rooms follow the theme from the lobby but the views towards the pool and the beach are modern Hua Hin. This makes for a very nice setting for a treat for yourself, relaxing you even before the treatment has even started.

Dec 15 - Jan 15 , 2015

The Spa offers a complete spa experience, from modern Western therapies to traditional Asian treatments. They offer traditional treatments such as scrubs but bring it to another level by allowing you to choose your own scrub blends. As for massages they can be customized too, by allowing the guest to chose the time and type of massage suited for each individual. Modern treatments include world famous Guinot facials and more traditional treatments can be found in their Signatures packages featuring massages, scrubs etc. For me, after a consultation the treatment chosen was the Coffee scrub 60 minutes and aromatic massage 60 minutes. My treatment room followed the same design element as the main areas with Thai artifacts and warm yet comfy luxurious fabrics

to surround me. To freshen me up, Khun Ploy my therapist, started by treating my feet to a salt scrub rub down in warm water whilst I got in the mood to relax. This was followed by the Coffee scrub applied to my whole body for 60 minutes. The scrub application isn’t just slap handedly applying scrub; instead Khun Ploy with care and technique applied the scrub to really remove the dead skin. The smell of the scrub is the most amazing part of the treatment, you smell like a delightful coffee on a cold morning. I usually tend to not to enjoy scrubs and just want the end result, a nice skin and be off. But in my expert therapist hand the application of the scrub became almost like a massage. Not a bad deal if you think about it, 60 minutes scrub followed by 60 minutes massage. After the scrub you are led to your own private shower to rinse off the coffee grind. Your skin re-emerges to, well, how it used to be in younger days. Next came an aromatherapy massage like no other. I was told by the staff that Khun Ploy has many years’ experience as a Spa therapist and it showed. I was out in no time and can hardly remember much of especially the second half of the treatment. I struggled not to fall asleep but with Khun Ploy’s very unique and wonderful massage technique it just made me surrender and snore my little head off. The treatment ended with some ginger tea and snacks to wake you up, I suspect. HOT SCORE My favorite thing about this package was the scent of the scrub and the amazing detoxing and cleansing properties of it. Does this mean my insides are clean every morning after my morning coffee? The massage was just pure bliss from beginning to end, I can’t say more than that. I feelt very embarrassed when I woke up knowing that I had sounding like a small tug boat thruogh most of the treatment. Poor Khun Ploy. The Spa in ambiance itself is very warm, inviting and the right kind of atmosphere for a relaxing hour or two. The Spa does monthly specials and in January the Spa has introduced a special new spa treatment that is inspired by and adapted to the winter season with a special Winter Warm Up package at a special price. The treatment starts with an Aromatic Floral or Steam Bath for 30 minutes, Sesame Scrub for 30 minutes and ends with an Aromatic Warm Oil Massage for 60 minutes. The special package rate is only Baht 3,200 nett per person. My treatment was bliss so I am sure the Winter Warm Up package tops as well. HOT AROUND TOWN HYATT COMMUNITY GRANT TO BAAN WANG PLA SCHOOL

ANANTASILA GETS 4 STAR RATING Mr. Bruce Khalili General Manager of Anantasila Hotel and Resort in Hua Hin received a 4 star rating award from Mrs. Kobkarn Wathanavrangkul the Minister of Tourism and Sports. The event was held in Siam Paragon, Bangkok on Wednesday 26th November.

As a part of Hyatt Community Grants, a philanthropic program that empowers Hyatt colleagues to guide charitable giving, Hyatt Regency Hua Hin & THE BARAI announced today that it has awarded Baan Wang Pla School with a grant to further the organization’s efforts in developing educational standards for the students in order that they can receive the same level of learning opportunity as other more privileged school. The Hyatt Community Grants program, which is now in its seventh year, encourages hotels around the world to identify and nominate local nonprofits for funding consideration. The program builds on Hyatt’s belief that no one better understands a community’s most pressing issues – and their solutions – than those that live and work there. All participating nonprofits must have a significant local presence and must support one of Hyatt’s four focus areas – Environmental Sustainability, Education & Personal Advancement, Economic Development & Investment, or Health & Wellness. “We are honored to support Baan Wang Pla School and their valuable contributions to our community,” said Mr. Sammy Carolus, general manager, Hyatt Regency Hua Hin & THE BARAI. “It is so important for us to be active participants in our area, and this program gives us the great opportunity to give back to the local organizations that do so much for our city. Hyatt regency Hua Hin & THE BARAI started the relationship with Baan Wang School since the hotel 10th anniversary in 2011. From then on we provide constant support by arranging monthly activities and helping to raise funds for the school development through a project called the Bags of Care project. Students were invited to stay in the hotel and join activities with guests and associates on several occasions e.g. Christmas Lighting ceremony and annual golf tournament Hyatt.

HOT AROUND TOWN THAILAND CLASSIC HAPPENING ON 1215TH FEBRUARY AT BLACK MOUNTAIN

FOUR SEASONS BANGKOK TO BECOME ANANTARA SIAM BANGKOK

Black Mountain Golf Club in Hua Hin will play host to the inaugural Thailand Classic from February 12-15 next year, where it will become the first event co-sanctioned between The Asian Tour and European Tour to be permanently based in Thailand. With a prize fund of US$2 million dollars the event is set to attract many prominent golfers from the world as well as some of Asia’s finest talent, including the best golfers from Thailand.

The Four Seasons Hotel in Bangkok will be rebranded next year, to become Anantara‘s new flagship hotel. The luxury property, which is located on Rajadamri Road in the centre of Bangkok, is owned by Minor Hotel Group, Anantara’s parent company and from 1 March 2015, Minor will re-flag the hotel as the Anantara Siam Bangkok Hotel & Spa. Facilities at the 354-key hotel include seven restaurants and bars, a spa, gym, outdoor swimming pool and meeting space, including a 550-pax ballroom. The hotel will be managed by Titiya Chooto, who will transfer to Bangkok from the Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai. She also previously served as hotel manager at Four Seasons Bangkok. Minor said the rebranding of the hotel marks “the culmination of a life-long dream” of the company’s chairman William E. Heinecke, to operate a flagship Anantara property in the centre of the Thai capital.

It will be the first time in eight years that the European Tour has co-sanctioned an event in Thailand with the Asian Tour. The event will form part of the European Tour’s International Schedule, with prize money earned to count towards The 2015 Race to Dubai, a year-long competition currently led by World Number One Rory McIlroy. The Black Mountain course, which has already hosted three Asian Tour events since it opened in 2007, is regarded as one of the best in the region and has won high praise from leading golfers. This event has been made possible by its two promoters, MUSE Group Bangkok and media investor, Asia Joint Panorama Plc. and is sure to be a success. The Thailand Classic has also received great support from the PTT Group, Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT), Thailand Professional Golf Association (TPGA), Chang, Bangkok Hospital, Titleist and the Intercontinental Hotel & Resort Hua Hin. 11TH PRESERVE HUA HIN CHARITY MUSIC FESTIVAL IS A SUCCESS

“Owning this prestigious hotel in the heart of Bangkok and working with the fantastic team during its time as Four Seasons Bangkok has been an amazing journey. I am looking forward to continuing the journey in the next stage of this property’s life as Anantara Siam,” Heinecke said. Built in 1978, the property launched as a Peninsula before being sold to Regent Hotels in 1982. Four Seasons assumed management of the property following its acquisition of Regent in 1992. Minor then acquired the hotel, named the Regent Bangkok, in 2001, and it has been operating as a Four Seasons since 2003. Once rebranded, Anantara Siam Bangkok will become the brand’s fourth hotel in the Thai capital following the Anantara Baan Rajprasong, Anantara Bangkok Riverside and Anantara Bangkok Sathorn.

On 13th December the 11th Annual Preserve Hua Hin Music Festival was held on Hin Lek Fai hill. The event was as every year jam packed with performances by popular Rock, Blues, and Country bands from Thailand. Ticket prices allowed concert attendees to eat from stands represented by famous hotels in Hua Hin. VIP tickets even included free flow of drinks through the night. The aim of the event was to generate funds towards preserving the urban mangrove forest in Hua Hin as well as contribute to the construction of MEPSEC Hua Hin (Mangrove Ecosystem Preservation & Science Education Centre in Hua Hin). MEPSEC Hua Hin is to be the first ‘green’ ecotourism science education center in Hua Hin. As every year Hin Lek Fai was packed to the brim with people enjoying good music, good food and the magnificent views from the mountain all in the name of charity.” Dec 15 - Jan 15 , 2015

HO T HOTEL REVIEW

HOT MAGAZINE RECOMMEND

Emporium Suites, Bangkok by Chatrium

R

ecently at a gathering of local Hua Hin expats the conversation turned to why Hua Hin was chosen as everyone’s new home. The answers were all fairly predictable; relaxed lifestyle, the beaches, golf, infrastructure, resort lifestyle and overall quality of life. The other answer given, which was almost unanimous, was Hua Hin’s proximity to Bangkok. The relaxed small town life is enjoyable but every once in a while most said they enjoyed going up and experiencing the thrill of the big city and what it had to offer. For me personally, I like going up to Bangkok once or twice a month for movies, good shopping and an unlimited plethora of quality restaurants. On my most recent trip to the City of Angels I stayed at a hotel where I could experience all 3 of my desires, movies, shopping and dining without ever stepping outdoors. The Emporium Suites by Chatrium is built into the Emporium Shopping Mall complex which has very recently completed an 8 month 3 billion baht remodel. Here you will find 8 floors of great shops, a super market that would be the envy of any country it was placed in, floors of restaurants that can meet any type of cuisine desire and first class movie theaters. Another benefit is that it connects directly to the Phrom Phong BTS Skytrain station. I can’t think of a more convenient hotel in Bangkok to stay. The Emporium Suites is a 5 star hotel offering cosmopolitan luxury in the trendy area of Sukhumvit Soi 24. Each guestroom provides exceptionally spacious comfort, with floor-to-ceilingwindows, separated kitchens and the highest quality furnishings. As the name states, they offer suites in 1, 2 or 3 bedroom configurations ranging in size from 95 to 200 square meters. I stayed in their Grand Deluxe One bedroom suite which was 115 square meters in size and had a full European kitchen, including an oven, a dining room table, a spacious lounge with an entertainment system, a separate washing machine & storage room, a guest toilet, two outdoor decks and a luxurious bedroom and bathroom with a desk and second flat panel TV. Their Penthouse suites of which there are 4 are an astounding 515 square meters in size, equating to 5,543 square feet. HO T GETAWAY

Tha Song Yang

T

his month’s Hot Getaway takes us to Tha Song Yang in the province of Tak, quite a road trip at 15 hours from Hua Hin but it’s rustic beauty is stunning and worth the long drive. In Tha Song Yang you will find the Mae Moei National Park. The park is named after the Moei River which is the border between Thailand and Myanmar stretching almost 50 Kilometers. The park itself is about 185 square kilometers in size.

Most of the park is mountainous, ranging from 680 meters to 1,250 meters above sea level. November thru March is the best time to visit as the temperatures are cool and the “sea of fog” is plentiful. May thru October is its rainy season and not an ideal time to visit. When at Moei National Park there are several waterfalls worth viewing, those include the Chao Doi, Mae Ramaeng and Mae Salid Noi waterfalls.

There is an excellent cave to explore called the Mae U-su which has the Mae U-su river running through it with wonderful stalactites and stalagmites. Due to its rarity in Thailand, one of the most popular things to do when at the park is to visit one of the numerous “Sea of Fog” viewpoints. Often a fog layer will descend below the mountain tops so when looking from the high viewpoints in the park it appears as if the fog is a sea.

A large number of Karen have settled in the area after leaving Myanmar. You will see them selling their produce and wares along the main roads. They regularly hold festivals which delight the Thai’s even though they don’t understand what’s being said.
