Dear Reader “Mabuhay!” With the traditional Philippine greeting we warmly welcome you to issue 1 Volume 5 of HOT Magazine. Our first issue of the new year is quite special as we take you to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Vigan in the Philippines. Cobblestone walkways, horse-drawn carriages, mansions of yester-year, this is Vigan, one of the few remaining 16th century towns in the Philippines. While in the Philippines, we introduce you to two great places to stay, the Luna Hotel and Vitalis Villas. Inspired by the hillside town of Santorini in Greece, the high end Vitalis Villas are built on a cliff above Santiago Cove. Step into their dove-white houses, cobalt blue sea and powdery white sands. Our Philippine adventure begins on page 8. Next up we take you to Asia's favourite boat show, the Phuket International Boat Show presented by Thailand Elite. Held during Phuket's peak season when villa owners, jet-setters and the wealthy elite are enjoying the island's famed luxury lifestyle, more than 120 marine businesses and luxury brands from around the globe were represented at this annual event – a fixture on the global marine industry calendar. Put on your boat shoes and step aboard on page 38. This month’s “Let’s Stay” takes us to the famous Banyan Tree Bangkok Hotel. Their Rooftop Vertigo Restaurant and Moon Bar is one of the most popular drinking and dining spots in BKK and with their well-known Banyan Tree Spa, one of 23 in 13 countries, and their new room renovations, this is one very busy hotel indeed. Check in on page 52. This month we also delve into Hua Hin’s Real Estate scene. First, we take you to Baan Phu Thara’s newly completed show house, where you will see why this housing estate is certain to be one of the bestselling developments in 2017 and one you should surely view before making any real estate purchase. Take the tour on page 38. With Champagne Wishes and Caviar Dreams, this months “HOT Homes of Hua Hin” features R1 The Residence. Luxurious without being ostentatious, this home is the ultimate family and entertaining residence. See why you’ll want to be calling the movers on page 64. Those are just a few of the stories you’ll find inside this month’s issue. On a personal note, I’d like to thank the Mayor of Vigan City, Juan Carlo S. Medina for his assistance with our photo shoot, Hotel Luna and Vitalis Villas for their hospitality and the Mr. Tourism World Organization for all of their arranged events and activities. As always, thank you for picking us up and we hope you enjoy the read.

Vigan Philippines

f you want to travel to the past in class, if you want to walk into a magical Spanish-Colonial domain, and experience a fascinating blast from an earlier point in time of wide endless stone paved streets without going all the way to Europe, the Historic City of Vigan in the Philippines is just the choice for you. Vigan was established in the 16th century, making it one of the oldest towns in this historically packed country.

January 15 - February 15 , 2017
From royalty to revolutionaries, lots of big names in the world of colonialism, politics and power have gone through this city. For instance, a fun fact of the City of Vigan is that it is the birthplace of the sixth president of the Philippines Mr. Elpidio Quirino. The City of Vigan is a Romeo and Juliette kind of fairy tale setting with row after row of colonial stone buildings which take you to the ancient streets of Malaga (Spain) without having to move
from Asia. The gregarious town allows you to enjoy the tidbits of exquisiteness which modernity has stripped away from us; from long promenades in the pedestrian friendly environment from dawn to twilight, to short enjoyable carriage trips exploring hidden corners of the ancient town of Vigan as would have a duke or duchess of the time. This UNESCO World Heritage Site never seems to disappoint.

Vigan was declared as the most well preserved example of a Spanish colonial town in Asia by UNESCO in 1999. In 2015 Vigan city was recognized officially as one of the New 7 Wonders Cities alongside Doha, Durban, Beirut, Kuala Lumpur, La Paz and Havana, placing a second South East Asian city to the list with great pride. What is surprising, is that the magic is found within what some could call, ‘just another noisy Filipino town’. However, if you are of a sensitive nature you will be quick to appreciate Vigan’s exclusivity. The swift aroma of freshly baked traditional Spanish patties dangling in the air, and the unique antique and pottery shops which fill up the streets with the overflow of various items such as wooden trunks, unpaired chairs and vintage collector items that make it hard for one to enter the establishments selling them. The rawness of this city in every one of its cultural aspects; its buildings, the small businesses and the liveliness of the streets are some of the characteristics that make this old city unlike any other. Vigan is known to be the most outstanding example of a planned Spanish Colonial town in Asia. Its architecture is a clear reflection of the fusion of Filipino, Chinese, European and Mexican elements which in turn create the idiosyncratic multi-cultural townscape that is Vigan. A city that is unlike any other found anywhere on the face of this planet. Its location, at the delta of Abra River alongside the coastline of the main island of Luzon, made it one of the important trading posts much before the colonial era. The flow of two additional rivers, the Mestizo River and the Govantes River made the city famous for being detached from the mainland by the three rivers flowing through and around it. However, after the silting of the Mestizo, Vigan is no longer separated from the mainland. Its considerate urban plan conforms with the Renaissance grid plan used in all of the towns which used to form part of the Spanish Empire. This urban design made Vigan consist of two main plazas, Plaza Salcedo and Plaza Burgos, which are dominated by the St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Archbishop’s Palace, the City Hall and the Provincial Capitol Building. All which form part of the must-sees for any interested visitor. The 233 string of historic buildings meticulously placed along a grid of 25 streets are mostly two storey buildings built purely with brick and wood with steep roofs which one could deduce are extracted from typical Chinese architecture. The exterior walls are covered by wooden window frames made of capiz shells which are specially designed to enable a refreshing ventilation to the insides of the buildings. In addition, the urban plan of the city has made Vigan City be subdivided into 39 beautiful barrios which is the Spanish word for neighbourhoods and which are also referred to as barangays by Filipinos.

January 15 - February 15 , 2017
The traditional structures of the buildings have kept their authenticity not only with the maintenance of the grid urban plan and the use of open spaces such as the plazas but also with the usage of the buildings themselves. The traditional use of these buildings was for commerce on the ground floor and as a residence to owners on the higher floors; since colonial times the City of Vigan intends to keep it the same way. Not only is Vigan’s historical relevance the only attraction it boasts of, in addition it has plenty of things to do, especially plenty of things to see. In Vigan one can go skydiving, enjoy the nearby spas, go on beautiful boat tours around the coast of the city, and even take a dip at the nearby beaches. But one must also be an avid observer to truly enjoy Vigan. Some of the mustsees include various museums such as the National museum, the Padre Burgos House which enlightens visitors with Philippines’ history and culture, the Crisologo Museum and the Buridek Children’s Museum. Other sightseeing monuments are the many churches the Spaniards left behind with important historical backgrounds, these include; the famous Archbishops Palace an old Spanish Church which opens at the prior request of guests, the St Augustine Church, and the St. Paul Metropolitan Catheral. Other architectural landmarks include The Quirino Bridge also known as the St. Augustine Bridge; sunsets and sunrise become unforgettable here, the Banaoang Bridge, the Chapel by the Ruins, Plaza Burgos found at the Heart
of Vigan, Plaza Salcedo famous for its dancing water fountains, and the Bantay Bell Tower, a scenic place where one can learn just a little more of Vigan’s history. As in every recommended place, the places to visit are many, but the gastronomical culture must not lose its importance. Vigan has great eateries especially food that must be tried out in the greatness of the plazas of the city. The much-acclaimed empanada, longanisa and kankanen are most definitely a must-try, but there is a lot more than that to try in Vigan. The city’s culinary culture is mostly simple and seems to always try to enhance the natural flavour in each of its ingredients keeping its dishes fresh, straightforward and by doing so; very interesting. Pinakbet for instance is a mixture of eggplant, bitter melon, okra and squash cooked with fermented shimp or sundried pork belly, fried prior to mixing it with the vegetables to create a crunchy texture. Plaza Burgos is a great place to try out an order of arroz caldo or chicken porridge, pancit Vigan or soupy miki noodles and okoy or deep fried shrimps mixed with flour and eggs. Filipinos have these during regular meals or even as a snack at any random time of the day. Another popular place to try out local food is the local Vigan Public Market. Here, one can try out lumo (a soup made with pork blood, pork tenderloin and green onions), pipian (cooked chicken with ground rice and other special local ingredients), poqui-poqui (mashed eggplant with egg), caldereta (a local
beef stew), pinapaitan (a bitter meat dish, made with either beef or goat bile and innards) and sinanglao (a beef broth with beef innards) at its most authentic version in the local market. However, if these local gourmet spots do not please your aesthetic palette, Vigan food can also be tasted at more comfortable settings, for instance at the Vigan heritage Mansion where one can try the bagnet, dinengdeng, longanisa and pinakbet. Café Leona is also another favourite, offering International and Vigan fusion food to please the international palette. Vigan City is located 408 Kilometres from Manila. Most people will take the bus, which is an eight to ten hour trip. The bus schedule includes a night bus so you can sleep during the drive and wake up in Vigan early in the morning. Alternatively, you can take a 45-minute flight from Manila to Laoag International Airport and from their it is a two hour drive to the city. The City of Vigan is in conclusion, Philippines’ little gem. The combination of its multi-cultural historical value, adjacent to its defined architectural structures and its local culinary delicacies make it a city for the mind of a curious traveller. It is not with ease which one finds a city which is a melting pot of cultures in all the aspects Vigan happens to be. The best of Asia, Europe and parts of Latin America combined to form one only city must not be wasted while it is still alive, well and running.

When visiting the city of Vigan we recommend that you stay at Hotel Luna. Hotel Luna is located in the heart of the Heritage Village and it is the first and only museum hotel in the Philippines. Within the hotels halls, walls and rooms are stunning works of art from Master and National artists such as Fernando Amorsolo, Napoleon Abueva, Vincente Manansala, Benedicto Cabrera, and of course the hotel’s namesake, Juan Luna. These grand pieces are all collected from generous donations through the MDS Foundation, and donated by the artists and their families, for they see the hotel’s vision of upholding the Filipino heritage and culture through the arts. One of the most spectacular pieces in the hotel is the 20 foot (6.1 meter) long balcony sculpture. Made from hammered brass, copper and silver, it transforms Luna’s courtyard, and for those at balcony level, the imaginative use of space has reinvigorated the artistic concept of heritage and interaction in a place where people pray, live and relax. Hotel Luna is a smaller boutique hotel with just 70 rooms and suites. The Hotel was originally a private mansion. When converting the residence to a hotel, the rooms were designed to blend the classic with the contemporary. The individual room styling complements the original features of the mansion, creating a real sense of history with a modern majestic flair. The hotel oozes opulence but still has an inviting and comfortable feel. All rooms and suites come with a full complement of amenities; 40” flat screen smart TV’s electronic locks, automated fire safety system, internet, a mini bar and a well-appointed bathroom with complete body products and amenities.

Hotel Luna offers several eating and drinking establishments. Its main restaurant is the Comedor. Stepping inside is like traveling to the past with original brick walls from the 1800’s, glistening chandeliers, old paintings and a furniture style that resembles the old world. The restaurant features contemporary Ilocano cuisine with delectable Spanish influences. Here you will find a large selection of local dishes, healthy and organic options and international favorites for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Chula Saloon Bar is the perfect place to unwind, listen to lounge music and enjoy bar bites, craft beers, single malts, cocktails plus wines from their exquisite collection. Azotea is their rooftop venue offering spectacular views of the city while enjoying snacks, cocktails and the occasional acoustic concert or “Movie under the Stars.” The hotel is known for its renowned catering and is an ideal locale for groups looking for a more exclusive venue, perfect for a corporate event or wedding. Hotel Luna is a consistent number 1 Traveler’s Choice hotel in Vigan City on Trip Advisor and is included in the top 25 hotels in the Philippines since its establishment in 2014. VITALIS VILLLAS After spending a few days fully discovering the Unesco city of Vigan, we suggest you travel another 40 minutes south by car to the beautiful coastal town of Santiago and stay a few nights at Vitalis Villas, built around a quiet cove. Inspired by the hillside town of Santorini in Greece, the high end Vitalis Villas are built on a cliff above Santiago Cove. The villas are built in traditional Greek architectural style and offer the warmth of Filipino island charm with the convenience of modern amenities. All of the villas are painted white in keeping with the Santorini theme, with only the rustic woven curtains in white and blue providing contrast and texture to the Spartan decor. 20
January 15 - February 15 , 2017
There are currently three types of villas available; a one bedroom villa, two bedroom villa and a two bedroom villa with pool access. They will soon offer Junior Suites for those traveling as a couple or with small children who don’t require the space of the larger villas. The one bedroom villas range in size from 89 to 125 square meters. Each Villa offers a spacious living area with a 40 LED TV, a dining area, a kitchen with a full size refrigerator, a microwave, induction cooker and a coffee espresso machine. The master bedroom is sizable and includes a luxurious bathroom. Each villa also offers a veranda with sea view. A nice additional feature is butler service to give you the utmost in convenience. The two bedroom villas are similar ins
size and amenities to the above with the difference being the option to have two queen size beds or 1 king size bed and a single bed. The two bedroom villa with pool access is the same as above but located on the pool floor. This magical place might have been inspired by the romantic Aegean, but it's warmth and charm is all its own. HOT AROUND HUA HIN VINTAGE CARS AND CLASSIC REVELERS AT THE SHERATON The 14th Hua Hin Vintage Car Parade’s Gala Dinner was a celebration of the Vintage Car Club of Thailand’s Annual Hua Hin parade at the Sheraton Hua Hin Resort & Spa’s The Chandelier Ballroom on December 17th. Vintage cars which had been on display around town, including inside ‘The Chandelier’ had to take a backseat. Front and center were resplendent guests wearing black and ‘vintage costume’, recognizing the era of their much loved motor vehicles and a clear preferred mode of dress. Apart from the ‘tasters’, a five course dinner set menu was accompanied by subdued jazz classics including many compositions by jazz lover the late King Bhumibol. Some audience participation featured as the night progressed with musical talent on show from both guitarists and singers a pleasant surprise to those unfamiliar with the musical
abilities of prominent Club Members. Achieving early prominence in the 1920’s, Hua Hin could be considered a vintage town which has now come of age. Apart from the longstanding hosting of the Vintage Car Club’s
expedition here, “Homecoming’ was a very appropriate theme for this year’s event, both because of the era of the vehicles and also for the classic party goers.

FIGHTING NEW YEAR FLAB 4. Reward yourself when you reach stepping stones—Many subscribe to the baseless idea that a resolution to change your health and body is a torturous process, but reality is that while you do have to push yourself and make some sacrifices, you can (and should) still enjoy the journey. Have a cheat day and down that pizza.
Every New Year brings with it an influx of gym-goers looking to improve their health and fitness. It’s actually a statistical fact that the majority of individuals who set a New Year’s resolution are looking to improve their body composition (specifically looking to lose fat). Sadly, the majority of these resolvers never follow through. In fact, only about 46% make it passed the 6-month mark. However, this shouldn’t dissuade people from setting a resolution since even having a goal is always much better than not planning/trying at all. So if you’ve set a goal/resolution for the New Year, congratulations, you’ve completed step one on the path to success.
BEING SELFISH IS NECESSARY…TO A POINT Let’s be clear about something here— your goal to improve your physique and change your health for the better must be something that you want to do for you and you alone. The point of “Doing this for yourself” is that your drive to succeed needs to stem from within; it needs to be something that you truly want for yourself. However, I’m not condoning narcissism and putting all your eggs in one basket because that simply isn’t healthy. There is no reason you can’t see your fitness goals through while still actively pursuing other aspects of your life and caring for your friends and
family. Lastly, this shouldn’t be a vanity contest, you and you alone stand to benefit from a physique/fitness goal, so do it for yourself! A common trait among people who are successful in their fitness pursuits is that they don’t waste their time looking for some special formula, they just master the basics–in turn, this makes them successful. With that in mind, let’s break down the steps necessary to achieve that fitness resolution of yours. 1. Be realistic when setting your resolution–Most people tend to get antsy when the New Year rolls around; it’s great to be excited about changing your physique but you need to be realistic. 2. Have an action plan—This step tends to be where people falter and fall prey to paralysis by analysis. It’s great to do your research and find a proper plan that suits your goals, but don’t sit around and dabble in minute details that won’t make a big difference in the end. Just pick a plan, do it and do it well! 3. Think in the long-term, act in the short-term—It’s great to keep the big picture in mind, but don’t overlook short-term goals in the process. A New Year’s resolution is typically a “longterm” goal, so if your resolution is to lose 50lbs by the end of the year then start by setting a “short-term” goal to lose 1lb in 1 week.

5. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals– Find a group of people you like being around and spending time with who have the same goals. This will help in the long run when you feel progress has stalled or that last rep or last mile seems so unreachable. Alternatively, seek a Personal Trainer to give you basic guidance and that “extra push”. 6. Be prepared for setbacks—Resiliency is a special attribute, especially when it comes to your fitness resolution. You will surely face adversity and setbacks on your journey. Don’t fret, these momentary setbacks are not going to ruin your success unless you quit altogether. It’s perfectly fine to fail, just don’t let those slip ups turn you into a failure.
PARTING THOUGHTS So there you have it, six basic steps that will lead you to the body of your dreams…or at least get you heading in the right direction. Just remember why you want to look better and be healthier, and more importantly enjoy the process. There will be some bumps along the way, but anything worth having is worth working hard for. Take pride in what you accomplish along the way and don’t look back; the new “you” is right around the corner. Now go crush 2017!

have decided to partner together on a brand new development called Baan Phu Thara located near Black Mountain. HOT Magazine recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Grahame to discuss their new project.
if you find a property that ticks 7 of those boxes then seriously consider it and if you can tick 8 boxes then buy it.
HM – How did you decide on the concept and designs for the Baan Phu Thara development.
The problem for us is that everyone has different priorities but I believe that with this development and by listening to buyers we have created something special and I believe it will tick more boxes for more people.
GB – Quite simply by listening to buyers and to build a development around their preferences and not ours.
HM – Baan Phu Thara is one of the first developments to use solar power and to be ECO friendly.
I was always told when buying a house make a list of your top 10 priorities and
GB – This has to be the way forward worldwide and especially in Thailand
with 365 days of sunshine and drought issues. We all want to pay less for our utilities especially when retired and this is so easy to do with a little thought and a willingness to achieve this. Like most buyers coming to Thailand I have children and grandchildren and I believe it is our responsibility to start to make things change as to how we build properties for a better and sustainable future. HM – Does the cost of being an ECO development make the property sales price higher?
GB – In the short term yes but not as much as most people think and in the long term buyers will make big savings, not just on the cost of electric and water but in resale values. I have spoken with many expats who live in Hua Hin, who love being here and the lifestyle it affords but wished that they had bought a higher standard property when they first moved here but were drawn by lower prices and now realize that the resale value of these properties have suffered badly. If you buy well at the beginning you won’t live to regret it and it negates the need to sell and move to a higher standard of
property in the future. HM – You seem to have included many extra features not seen in developments here in Hua Hin before. GB – Again we have tried to think from a buyer’s point of view, especially as our target market are people who like me are not getting any younger and all of us have to consider how our lifestyle will change as we get older. HM – How did your partnership with Khun Eakkarat Suppagarn come to be?
January 15 - February 15 , 2017
39
GB – I met Eakkarat when my wife and I bought our first property in Thailand on his Smart House 2 development and we have remained friends ever since. My company TCH started to do the Sales & Marketing for the Thailand Property Award winning Smart House Valley development around 18 months ago and sales have been strong with only a few plots remaining for sale and so it was during this time that the idea of a partnership was formed. HM – What do you see as the main strengths of this partnership? GB – Allowing people to do what they do best. Eakkarat is a well-established builder with a proven track record of honesty and professionalism, he has built 8 developments which is over 300 properties and he has the connections within the building industry, he knows how to run a building site and to complete properties that are built to a very high standard on time, time and time again. My strength is in sales and taking clients through the buying and building process from the first meeting to the handover of the property. Customer service and good communication is an essential part of this business and by both myself and Eakkarat working to our own personal strengths I feel that we can give buyers the highest level of confidence to purchase. HM – How confident are you that the property market in Hua Hin will continue to grow? GB – Vey confident as I honestly believe that Hua Hin is the best place for an expat to live in Thailand. I have also seen an enormous change in the quality of property being sold in Hua Hin over the last 5 years. The quality and finishing on more and more developments are to European standards and I believe that the standard of our development Baan Phu Thara will raise the standards for all developments in Hua Hin to follow, which can only be a good thing for the buyer and for property sales in Hua Hin in the future. HM – You are obviously very passionate about this development. GB – Very passionate, how can you sell something that you don’t believe in? Our goal is to build the best development in Hua Hin, to the highest standard of design, quality and finishing, with the lowest maintenance and running costs. We are asking people to pay us money to build them a home that in many instances will be for their retirement after many years of hard work, so we feel they deserve to have the best property that we can build for them and we are very aware that at the end of the day it is the potential buyer who will decide if we have achieved this or not. HM – Thank you Grahame for taking the time to speak with us. For more information or to schedule a viewing, contact Grahame Beecham at thaicountryhomes@gmail.com and reference the HOT Magazine article.

Phuket International Boat Show Returns for its 14th Year
46
January 15 - February 15 , 2017
'A
sia's favourite boat show', the Phuket International Boat Show presented by Thailand Elite, took place from the 5th to 8th January at the award-winning Royal Phuket Marina. Held during Phuket's peak season when villa owners, jetsetters and the wealthy elite are enjoying the island's famed luxury lifestyle, more than 120 marine businesses and luxury brands from around the globe were represented at the annual event – a fixture on the global marine industry calendar. Positioning Phuket as the marine and lifestyle hub of Asia, the annual Phuket International Boat Show (PIMEX) once again exceed all expectations. “We had an excellent line-up of boats in-the-water and represented at the show, including many top global brands. Interesting this year was the increase in the number of sail boats on display, in particular multihulls,” commented Mr. Andy Dowden, Managing Director of Andaman Marine Consultants, organiser of the Phuket International Boat Show. “Following the reduction in duties and taxes on international boats from more than 200% to zero in 2004, Phuket has become the home base of choice for regional boat owners. The island today welcomes more than 2,000 yachts a year and is a 10 Billion Baht-a-year industry, and through PIMEX and the business it generates at show and post show, we expect to contribute more than 6 Billion Baht to the island's economy.” Known for it's large in-water display of top international boat brands, this year exceled with 40 boats in-the-water, and most of the top international sail and power boat brands represented, including Admiral, Airship RIBs, Axopar, Azimut, Beneteau, Corsair Marine, Fairline, Fleming, Fontaine Pajot, Galeon, Gulf Craft, Hanse, Jeaneau, Lagoon, Mag Bay, Majesty Yachts, Monte Carlo Yachts, Moody, Prestige, Princess Yachts, San Lorenzo and Sunseeker, just to name a few. These are joined by models from local builders Cholamark Boat and Sunnav. Leading dealerships Simpson Marine and Boat Lagoon Yachting have the largest in-water footprint and are joined by displays from Northrop and Johnson, Derani Yachts, Go Boating Thailand, MGC Marine, Multihull Solutions, South East Asia Yacht Sales and Services, and Asia Marine. In addition to the outdoor in water display there was also 2,500 square meters of indoor exhibition space with a diversity of displays from as far afield as China, Australia, Italy and France.

Onshore highlights included a large selection of brokerage yachts, premium properties, luxury cars, super bikes from Harley Davison, as well as exclusive membership offerings from Thailand Elite. A comprehensive array of marine products and services including engine suppliers, chandlery, Seabob, paddle boards, yacht charter, marine tours, Rip Curl and more rounded out an exciting PIMEX 2017 line-up. “The signs were strong for a good show this year. Following an extensive national and international marketing campaign, thousands of visitors enjoyed the quality exhibitor line-up and unique waterfront atmosphere of the Royal Phuket Marina over the four day show, with potential buyers flying in from key markets such as Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Russia and also Bangkok,” added Dowden. PIMEX couldn’t be held in a nicer location in Asia than the Royal Phuket Marina, a world-class, luxury, Mediterranean-style marina and entertainment, lifestyle hub with open air restaurants. It is also the only marina in Southeast Asia offering private moorings on the doorsteps of its luxury residences. The state-of-the-art outer marina with its 120 berths and 24-hour security is now fully occupied and has become the home to many of the island’s premier yachts. Located on Phuket’s eastern seaboard overlooking scenic Phang Nga Bay, the Royal Phuket Marina is Thailand’s first lifestyle community rivalling top marina resort communities in Europe and the Caribbean.

January 15 - February 15 , 2017
Banyan Tree is a larger hotel with 327 rooms, each offering every up-to-date amenity and facility one could desire. It is a modern sanctuary and a majestic escape offering guests the joy of rejuvenation, relaxation and tranquility amidst the hustle and bustle of fast-paced Bangkok city lifestyle.
Bangkok’s Banyan Tree is located on South Sathon Road in the city's central business district, not far from the Lumpini Park and the Silom area. This luxurious hotel lies only 40 minutes away from the Suvarnabhumi International airport and boasts of not only perfect location but also excellent services.
Once decided on the Banyan Tree you then have the pleasure of choosing between 10 different roo m types. The Horizon King and Horizon Twin rooms include a living room, a comfortable bedroom and a bathroom with a personal aromatherapy burner with essential oils which promises incredible views of Bangkok city to the north and the beautiful calming river to the south. The Oasis Retreat King and the Oasis Retreat Twin are designed for both business and leisure travelers with comfortable working areas featuring ergonomic desks flooded with natural light. The bathrooms are designed for relaxing moments with elegant twin black granite
The Hotel is famous for a multitude of reasons. It houses one of the best roof top restaurants and bars in Bangkok, Vertigo and their Moon Bar, It features its awardwinning, internationally recognized, Banyan Tree Spa and it offers one of the most talked about dinner cruises on the Chao Phraya River on board the Apsara, the hotels converted vintage rice barge.
basins, a rain shower and big bathtubs with twin headrests. The Oasis rooms also include exclusive access to the club floor “living room” on the 11th floor of the hotel with complimentary refreshments and snacks as well as the private meeting room. The Serenity Club King, the Serenity Club twin, the one bedroom suites, and the two bedroom suites all boast of comfortable living room and resting areas, decorated with contemporary Thai furnishings and provide complimentary access to the Club Lounge. Their Sanctuary Spa Suites feature an in-suite spa treatment room. Finally, the Presidential Suite is a splitlevel duplex with a spiral stairway, a bubbling jet pool, exclusive relaxation jet showers and electronically controlled curtains to add to the luxury. f you are looking for a short or long getaway from life’s craze, a place which will ensure you can relax and distance yourself from the boring yet invasive problems of a mere mortal in cosmopolitan godly fashion, the exquisite Banyan Tree Bangkok is just ideal for you.

We had the pleasure of staying in their one bedroom suite and can highly recommend it. The suite encompasses three large rooms, the lounge area had lots of seating, a TV and a work desk, the spacious master bedroom with his and hers large closets and then onto the oversized bathroom with a big shower, double vanity, makeup table and a modern bathtub that overlooks the city. Making the room even more enjoyable were the additional services that came with it. Complimentary laundry, up to 2 pieces per day, complimentary use of its boardroom, complimentary free flow of local beers from 10:30AM to 8:PM (that is not a typo) at their club lounge, Afternoon Tea and several hours of evening cocktails with delicious canapes. When staying in a fine hotel with club floor privileges, you are always offered the opportunity to have breakfast on their club floor. The plus to this is that your breakfast experience is more relaxing due to the limited guests. I’ve found the downside is that you don’t have all the food choices that one would have at the normal breakfast restaurant. Because of this, I tend to breakfast in the larger restaurant. What surprised me about the Banyan Tree’s Breakfast was that they offered a free flow of Proseco. It’s the only Monday thru Saturday hotel breakfast where I’ve experienced this. As mentioned earlier, The Banyan Tree Spa is quite famous, there are 27 of them in 13 countries. The range of treatments are extensive and broken down into categories such as Banyan Signatures, Time Honored Traditions, Body Treats and Wellness Journeys to name a few. In addition to being famous for its Spas, Banyan Tree Bangkok is also well known for their dining and drinking pleasures. Here you have 11 different options from their Lobby Lounge on the ground floor all the way to their Vertigo and Moon Bar on their 61st floor rooftop. From the lobby, a fast lift takes you to the 60th floor where you can find the popular Bai Yun Chinese restaurant with delicious Chinese delicacies. After walking past it and straight up a flight of stairs you find yourself outdoors. Acrophobia better not be your weakness, as you will be able to see all of Bangkok laid out below you the moment you step outside. Guests find themselves with the city below their feet and absolutely nothing above them. Other similar venues may have a roof, a wall or even part of the building's structure blocking part of the view. Not at Banyan Tree. The designers have successfully made sure to eliminate

everything and anything that could block guest’s vision of the horizon clearly accentuated by the slim appearance of the building itself. In addition, Vertigo restaurant serves excellent imported steaks, juicy lamb and fresh seafood making spending a romantic evening on the Banyan Tree rooftop all about dining on top of the world with undeniable class. If you prefer a few walls and windows with your views, then check out their Vertigo Too Restaurant located on the 60th floor of the Hotel. For more details on Vertigo TOO check out our October issue where we featured it with 4 pages. If heights are not your forte, the hotel also offers the Apsara Dinner cruise, one of Bangkok’s best gourmet sailing experiences, offering couples and families the pleasure of dining while floating around the great Chao Phraya River. Guests can feast on authentic Thai cuisine, flowing along the river with the views of all the beautifully lit temples in the river side surroundings. It is a romantics dream. The Banyan Tree Hotel is just what you need if luxury, relaxation and urbane extravaganza go hand in hand while you dream of your next holiday. The perfect combination exists, and it is all embodied in the Banyan Tree Hotel of Bangkok. f you ask anyone involved in Hua Hin’s Real Estate scene, they will tell you that Orchid Palm Homes builds one of the best, if not the best homes in Hua Hin. The fact that they recently sold out their 8th development of over 60 homes, in record time, in a down real estate market, cements that fact. They’ve
been well honored by their real estate peers nationally, winning the Thailand Property Awards “Best Residential Development in Hua Hin” Award for two years and followed that by winning the Thailand Property Award’s “Best Boutique Developer” Award for all of Thailand.
After building hundreds of homes, and with those kind of credentials, you would expect that the Orchid Palm Homes developer would build a pretty special house for he and his family. He did, and it is now available for purchase.

Grand Palace
72
January 15 - February 15 , 2017
This historical and famous landmark was built in 1782 by the Thai people, and has become an excellent reflection of the intricate creativity and craftsmanship of the warm, always smiling Siamese population.
The Grand Palace has been home to Thai Royalty for an incredible 150 years till the turn of the 20th century when the king stopped living in the majestic grounds to live in a more homely royal palace in Hua Hin. The grand palace was before the 20th century not only home to the Thai Royal family but also had the royal court, the administrative seat of government, the Thai war ministry and other important state departments which make it today what many would call the spiritual heart of the incredible Kingdom of Thailand. Due to its significant historical role
in Thai Governance, the opening of the palace has blessed us all with the opportunity of being able to observe and enter the grounds of a place where major decisions have been made by highly important personalities. The palace complex is as vast as a castle can be in the imagination of a peasant; its beautiful architecture, its similarity to other Thai historical places such as the Ayutthaya layout, and the focus on intricate details throughout the vast grounds is a mustsee to truly appreciate what Thailand is about; deep rooted culture, intricacy in details and rich aesthetic value in every presented creation.

isiting everything Bangkok has to offer on what may perhaps be a short trip to Thailand, can be somewhat challenging. However, one of Siam’s most coveted landmarks and a special place in the heart of many Thais which should not and must not be missed, is the spectacular Grand Palace.

Within the palace ground too lays the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew) which dates all the way back to the 14th century. An incredible large laying Buddha under the protection of a relatively small space found in what is known as the outer court. Interestingly enough, the robes of the laying Buddha are changed yearly by the reigning monarch, an important ritual in the Buddhist calendar. The Outer Court, which is near the entrance, used to be the area housing government departments such as the civil administration, the army and the treasury which the king used to be directly involved with. The Central Court on the other hand is the area where the residence of the King used to be as well as where halls used for carrying out state business were once located. Finally the Inner Court is where the royal consorts and the king’s daughters used to live, an area which in the past was known to be a small city populated entirely by women and children. Although royalty no longer lives in this inner most court, the entrance is still closed off completely to the public. It is not in many places where one can so closely re-live the ways of the monarchy; The Grand Palace is the place to be for Thai history and culture to be truly lived and a sight to certainly be seen when visiting Bangkok.
