Dear Reader Welcome to issue 10, Volume 4 of HOT Magazine. For almost four years, Hua Hin has been in a high state of anticipation as the BluPort Resort Mall was being planned and constructed. On October 1st, tens of thousands of Hua Hin & Bangkok residents poured thru the doors as they opened to the public for the very first time at 10 AM. On page 28 we take you to the celebrations that took place on that day and give you the full scoop on what you will find inside when strolling through Hua Hin’s one and only Resort Mall, BluPort. The Umpujh and Liptapanlop families have known each other for a generation. Both have a love and an affinity for Hua Hin after spending much time there. Both families became developers. So, it is only fitting that the two families would come together in Hua Hin and partner in a company called Hua Hin Asset Company Limited to build BluPort. Join us on page 36 where we sit down with Khun Supaluck Umpujh, Vice Chairman of The Mall Group and Vice Chairman of Hua Hin Asset Co. Ltd. and Khun Pasu Liptapanlop, Executive Director of Hua Hin Asset Co. Ltd. and Exectutive Director of Proud Real Estate to discuss the dream and vision that they had four years ago now known as BluPort. In its 11th year, the 2016 Thailand Property Awards took place on September 22nd in the Crystal Ballroom of the 5 Star Plaza Athenee Hotel in Bangkok. Over 600 of Thailand Real Estate's elite came together to see who would be rewarded with trophy’s signifying that their projects are the finest in the Kingdom. Turn to page 44 to see who took home the trophy’s and who’s projects were highly commended. Our “Let’s Go” feature takes us to the Capital of Cambodia, Phnom Penh. Phnom Penh stands out amongst all cities in South East Asia due to the aesthetic and historical architecture of its surviving French colonial buildings as well as the many culture oriented attractions it has to offer stemming from its rich historical background, that’s on page 60. On a personal note, I would like to thank the French Minister to Cambodia for his gracious hospitality during my recent stay. Those are just a few of the stories you’ll find inside. As always, thank you for picking us up and we hope you enjoy the read.

A Conversation with Dr. Nonney

ur October cover model is quite accomplished, her name is Doctor Nonney Sireerattawong and she is the first Transgender Medical Doctor in Thailand. She is strongly passionate about her chosen field and spends a lot of her time helping the less fortunate in her hometown of Phetchabun.

after people's health and wellness in a rural area in Phetchabun where I was born. I had found that there were many underprivileged people around"

HOT Magazine had the pleasure of sitting down with Khun Nonney to discuss her interesting life story.

HM: Khun Nonney, becoming a Doctor is a difficult long journey, when did you realize that’s what you wanted to be?

after I fulfilled my first dream that I decided to fulfill my second. I began to study further, specifically in aesthetic dermatology, anti-aging & homeopathy and Chinese acupuncture in order to be able to take care of my own health and transition as well as helping other people who are keen on their wellness.

NONNEY: I knew quite early on that I wanted to be a doctor, actually I had two dreams, to become a medical doctor and to become a woman. “Ever since I knew myself, I had a desire to dress like a woman but I chose to focus more on my study instead. After years and years of hard work, I finally earned a degree from Thammasat University and became a medical doctor as I wished. After graduation, I made my decision to go and look

Once I fulfilled my second dream I had the opportunity to compete in the 2011 Miss Tiffany Contest, the most prestigious Transgender contest in Thailand. Overnight I became well known in Thai society. I received a lot of media attention due to my being the first Transgender Doctor and appeared on many TV shows and my story was published in quite a few magazines. The popular TV show “Take Me Out Thailand invited me to participate,

HM: Had you made the transition from male to female during your school studies? NONNEY: No, it was only

which I did, being the first Trans ever asked to do so.

HM: We noted on Facebook that you have over 10,000 followers. Other than Doctoring in Phechabun, what else are you up to? NONNEY: My days are very full. I have a company called the Nonney Business Group which oversees my beauty clinics, I have branches in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Pattaya as well as Phetchabun delivering high quality beauty services focused on safe and high standards. HM: Khun Nonney, thank you so much for your time and for gracing our October Cover. Do you have any last words? NONNEY: Nowadays it is too easy to access substandard beauty treatment practices. There are a lot of unlicensed dermatology clinics popping up everywhere and the substandard treatment can be harmful to life. I wish everyone, either straight or gay, to be beautiful and safe.

L et’s Meet,

George Grecia What is your full name and age? George Grecia. I am a 48 years old What is your current Job Position? Director of Sports Development for True Arena Hua Hin How long have you lived in Hua Hin or been coming to Hua Hin? 2 weeks but I have been travelling frequently to Hua Hin dozens of times especially since last year. What did you know about Hua Hin before you moved here? A pleasant and nostalgic seaside city and that it is the Royal family’s holiday destination What do you like most about your profession? I get to hang out and be surrounded by like-minded individuals; people who love sports, fitness, and those who enjoy the fruits of an active and balanced life. The uplifting feeling and inspiration I get from people, who by sheer drive and determination are successful in their own way and being witness to their transformations is awesome. You can say I am proud to be part of an industry that has such a positive effect on individuals as much as it has in the community. What do you like least about your profession? What’s not to like? Frankly, there are times I wish there were more hours in the day so I can participate in all the activities that are offered out there. So much more to learn and experience and get better at. What do you like most about Hua Hin? I like the hiking trails, charming seaside points of interest and back country escapes, coupled with a charming and welcoming community,

truly makes Hua Hin one of a kind. Plus, if I need a little more excitement, Bangkok is not too far to make a quick getaway, yet it’s far enough from the vigorous hustle and bustle the city is known for. What is your favorite restaurant and why? The Beach at Anantasila Bar and Restaurant. The ambience and food reminds one of home and the quiet beachside location is a plus. And they allow guests to bring their pets along. What do you like to do in your free time and why? Spending time with my kids doing the things we love-Play, Eat, Sleep Repeat. What would you recommend to newcomers to do in Hua Hin and why? Visit and experience the many attractions and activities Hua Hin has to offer. From Vineyards, Golf, Waterparks, Night markets to Art Studios and Fresh Seafood. The many activities offered are so varied that you’ll get a different experience each time. Tell us a surprising fact that the public might not know about you? I was a night club bouncer and an altar boy. Not at the same time. What is the most outlandish thing you have ever done and why? If you know Rugby or played on a touring team, then you’ll already know that, “what happens on tour, stays on tour”

MARRIOTT'S 7 PERCENT HELMET PROJECT On Wednesday September 14th A group of GM’s and staff from leading hotels and resorts in Hua Hin met at the Hua Hin Marriott Resort & Spa in a joint event to raise awareness about motorcycle safety among Thai schoolchildren.

Hotels taking part in the initiative included Hua Hin Marriott Resort & Spa, Hilton Hua Hin Resort & Spa, Hyatt Regency Hua Hin, Sheraton Hua Hin Resort & Spa, InterContinental Hua Hin, Anantara Hua Hin Resort & Spa, Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin, Dusit Thani Hua Hin, ChivaSom International, Putahracsa Hua Hin, SO Sofitel Hua Hin, G Hua Hin Resort & Mall, Banyan The Resort Hua Hin, and Amari Hua Hin.

we have decided to donate helmets for the 2017 Children’s Day. We are talking with the Hua Hin Business community in the hope that other local businesses will join us and keep children in our local community safe and help educate the schools and families in Hua Hin that wearing a helmet can save your life.”

Representatives from these hotels welcomed hundreds of local children from nearby for an engaging event aimed at delivering the message of motorcycle safety.

Shocking figures show that less than seven per cent of Thai children wear helmets when riding on motorbikes with their parents. This means that every day, all across the country, more than 93 per cent of Thai children are risking their lives just by traveling to and from school.

A total of more than 1,000 motorbike helmets were donated by the hotels, Hua Hin Business Network, the Rotary Club of Royal Hua Hin, the Da Vinci International School and Hua Hin’s Orchid Palm Homes to the students, who were also able to take part in fun activities such as helmet painting.

In order to address this alarming statistic, 14 of Hua Hin’s top hotels joined forces to organize the "Helmet Extravaganza" - a CSR event aimed at saving the lives of young people in Hua Hin and Prachuap Khiri Khan Province.

“By donating more than 1,000 helmets to local students we could be potentially saving the lives of 1,115 local children. This is a truly incredible thought, and can I think of no more worthwhile activity to be part of.” Jennifer Ayling with Orchid Palm Homes had this to say, “Orchid Palm Homes got on Board with the Helmet extravaganza after hearing about it at the Hua Hin Business Network event. We pledged to donate 200 helmets which were donated to the Number 5 school in Cha Am. OPH normally sponsor prizes for a Local School in the Tab Dai area of Hua Hin for children's Day. This day falls in January so after the Helmet event

“It is a worrying fact of life in Thailand – and across many Asian countries – that many children do not wear helmets when traveling on motorcycles with their parents,” Goetz Bauer, General Manager of the Hua Hin Marriott Resort & Spa. “There are many reasons for this, but often it is simply that the children do not have helmets to wear.”

The Helmet Extravaganza was attended by an estimated 1,300 people, including the schoolchildren, representatives of the hotels & organizations and members of the media with the hope that this can be made a yearly event in Hua Hin.

I

t is no secret that Sheraton has recently became part of the world’s largest hotel network. (The tie-up between Marriott and Starwood Hotels & Resorts results in more than 5,500 hotels and 1.1 million rooms worldwide). In this global leviathan, it is a delight to find Sheraton Hua Hin Pranburi Villa’s, Luna La Pran Restaurant still with the flexibility to design its very own, specific menu,

proudly featuring local produce including seafood sourced from Pranburi fishermen. And Luna La Pran’s Chef adjusts the offering frequently, adapting to seasonal availability and to highlight local delicacies – extending even to the colourful, cocktails on offer.

with the growing number of ‘ex-pat’ residents discovering the still relatively uncommercialised, but rapidly developing, Pranburi coast. Luna La Pran is better known to guests of the destination, 53-unit, Sheraton Hua Hin Pranburi Villas.

This gem of the Paknampran coastline has been open barely a year, but is already building a reputation

Luna La Pran’s name is inspired by the panoramic view from shoreline location – usually including the lights

of a thriving squid fleet by night. This romantic vista is shared by either Al fresco, or covered, all-weather diners, framed by the modern lighting of a classy, new, ‘Riviera-style’, beachfront promenade. Amidst an ebbing sunset, in a cooling sea-breeze and in deference to the tropical ambiance, we commenced with very colourful range of delightful

cocktails. Featured were: ‘La Prantini’ (vodka, midori), ‘Sunset Cooler’ (Gin, Triple Sec) and, ‘Golden Freeze’ (Vodka, Amaretto & Malibu). Promptly following was a selection of appetisers, served in an easily-shared format: Appetisers: 1.

Larb Nuea beef served with a

shallots, roasted rice, chilli and mint leaves salad – made from the locally sourced and melt-inmouth, ‘Pon Yang Kam’ beef; 2.

Soft Shell Crab with curry powder, chilli paste, capsicum and onion – fresh off the boat;

3.

Honey Pork Ribs with baked potato – meaty and indulging the Farang palate.

October 15 - November 15 , 2016

23

The Main courses were perfectly complemented by the traditional, blackpeppery notes of Merlot CabernetSauvignon, 2014, from the Bordeaux’s Michel Lynch.

5.

Mains: 1.

2.

3.

4.

24

Tenderloin Beef Medallions – Beef fillets with red-wine reduction. Also a second check that the Pon Yang Kham beef could be as consistently tender as the Larb Nuea. If anything, better. Melt-inmouth, full of flavour and cuttable with the side of a fork.

Pla Krapong Lui Suan – quite the best deep-fried sea bass fillets, served with lemon grass, shallots, ginger, chilli, mint and peanuts;

Dessert: 1.

(The famed) Pranburi Squid – locally-sourced, sun-dried and fried. Not overly spicy and would also make a tantalising finger food with your favourite libation’.

Warm Sacher Cake - designed to indulge the truly indulgent chocolate-lover; and succeeded.

2.

Mango Sticky Rice – a perennial Thai favourite and perfectly done in every aspect at Luna La Pran

3.

Mangosteen Sorbet – one of many exotic flavours of ice-cream or sorbet. This one simply sublime; the ‘Queen of Fruits’ in a coconutmilk base.

Pad Pak Boong Fai Dang – palatecleansing, stir-fried morning glory (not unlike spinach), prepared with soybean paste, garlic & chillies; Gaeng Ped Phed Yang – Roasted duck (of undetermined provenance – maybe local), in red curry sauce with lychee, pineapple, cherries tomatoes and baby eggplant. Aroy!

Your goal is to work out at 90 percent of your max, which trains your body to work anaerobic mode(think Usain Bolt Olympic Sprinter), which helps you become more efficient at producing and using energy. The result? Your body's fat-burning potential increases and the kilos melt away. HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) is Best for Physical Change Let's all agree that the quickest way to burn fat isn't a slow, 60-minute session on the elliptical. In fact, if you want to see results, you've got to think Fast and Quick workouts. Seriously, go shorter and lose more? Here's why highintensity interval training (HIIT) works for weight loss.

day than if you took a slow, easy jog on the treadmill. How to Do It Right To get the maximum effect of your workout, intensity is key. You should be working out at about 80% of your maximum capacity of perceived exertion during your intervals. When strength training, be sure to focus on form, even when you're doing reps in quick succession. Ready to give it a go? Visit True Arena Hua Hin and engage one of our Personal Trainers for a program or join our upcoming HIIT classes soon to be launched.

You put in the effort, and now it's time to reap the benefits. Another way HIIT helps with weight loss is through its post workout effect, or the calories you burn when you're slouched on your couch and giving yourself a hi-five on completing your workout. Those short, intense bursts of exercise help build muscle and increase your resting metabolic rate, so your 20-minute workout ends up burning more calories throughout the

The more than 5-billion-baht project is a joint venture between the Mall Group - known for their luxury Bangkok shopping Malls such as Siam Paragon, The Emporium and their latest EM Quartier - and the Liptapanlop family’s Proud Real Estate Company. he Umpujh and Liptapanlop families have known each other for a generation. Both have a love and an affinity for Hua Hin after spending much time there. Both families became developers, the Liptapanlop family’s Proud Real Estate developing condominiums, hotels, waterparks and a world class fitness facility and the Umpujh family’s The MALL GROUP developing world class shopping malls such as The Emporium, Siam Paragon and the Em Quartier in Bangkok. So, it is only fitting that the two families would come together in Hua Hin and partner in a company called Hua Hin Asset Company Limited to build Hua Hin’s newest and greatest shopping mall, BluPort. Magazine had the pleasure of sitting down with both Khun Supaluck Upmujh, Vice Chairman of The Mall Group and Vice Chairman of Hua Hin Asset Co. Ltd. in Hua Hin and Khun Pasu Liptapanlop, Executive Director of Proud Real Estate and Executive Director Hua Hin Asset Co. Ltd. in Bangkok to discuss the dream and vision that they had four years ago now known as BluPort. HM: Khun Supaluk, as the developer of such iconic shopping malls as Siam Paragon, Emporium and the Em Quartier in Bangkok, what are your thoughts on the opening of BluPort after over four years of work? K. Supaluck: The Mall Group, as Thailand’s leading retail developer, has once again outdone themselves and is ready to reveal the latest pride and joy, made possible by joining forces with the

Proud Real Estate Company Limited, the BluPort Hua Hin Resort Mall, the first ever resort mall in Hua Hin. The project has committed over 5,000 million baht, and is located on the prime spot, at the center of Hua Hin, Prachuap Kirikhan, right across from the Intercontinental Hotel. The resort mall covers 60 rai, over 200,000 sqm., which has 50,000 sqm. allocated to the shopping complex, 25,000 sqm. allocated to the department store, and 100,000 sqm. for the parking lot that can accommodate about 3,500 vehicles. The resort mall will be Hua Hin’s new landmark that attracts both Thais and foreigners alike and marks Hua Hin as one of the dream destinations for tourism in terms of world class beach resorts. The opening of such a wonderful spectacle will also help bolster Thailand’s tourism economy and solidify the country’s

status on the ASEAN platform. HM: Do you do a lot of market research before you build a shopping mall? K. Supaluck: Actually, destiny came into play here. I’ve known Hua Hin since I was very very young, my family has a house here and I remember playing as a child here very well, actually even on this land where BluPort now sits. Because Thailand is the number one tourist destination in Asia, this year we expect 30 to 35 million tourists, and Hua Hin has its charm, a very unique charm. First you have the Heritage. It is a place where King Rama 4, Rama 5, Rama 6, right up to our current King Rama 9 have palaces here and liked to come here. You have the big Bangkok families that have houses here, a place where they

could relax. So I think Hua Hin has a lot of potential due to its unique charm. There are a lot of condominiums, and the condominiums are expensive, many nice residential developments and hotels here but what they lack is a nice mall. So with BluPort I believe we help make Hua Hin complete and to make it one of the top tourist destinations in Asia, that is my vision. We built Emporium in Bangkok 17 years ago when there was nothing in Thailand like it. It was the first high end luxury mall in Thailand. No one believed my vision but now today people say, “Oh, without Emporium and Siam Paragon, what would Thailand be?” I had a vision back then like I have a vision today. I’m not talking about one year or two years but three years or five years from now, what is Hua Hin going

to be? Why do the Scandinavians from far away like to come to Hua Hin? They like to play golf, it’s relaxing. My sister has four condominiums here, one for her and one for each of her 3 children. Her kids are still young but they are planning ahead. There are a lot of reasons why Hua Hin has great potential. One is its only 2.5 hours from Bangkok by car, you don’t have to get on a plane. The high speed train in the future, which will only take 45 minutes from Bangkok to Hua Hin. With the BluPort Resort Mall, we want this Mall to become a destination and to raise the standard of living for people. We have many great restaurants like Dean and DeLuca, we have Grey Hound, we have Coffee Club. We have all the brands like H & M, we have the Cinema we have the Whaley Port which is edutainment for kids so the family can come.

Let me give you an example, take Dubai, what is Dubai? It is a desert but they built the city within 10 years. It started with the Emirates Mall and the Dubai Mall and then the hotels come, the residential come, entertainment come and now it has become a tourist destination. It wraps around the social life.

do an urban mall; it has to be more of a resort mall concept. You will see it in the color schemes, the coconut trees. We try to make it like a resort, you don’t feel like you’ve come to the Mall. We wanted to make it feel like a second home so you come here more often, you eat here, you drink here, you buy here, you bring your kids here, you hang out here.

The reason I invest now is not one year or two years, it’s the future. The land belongs to us, it’s freehold and you cannot find the location like this, right in the heart of Hua Hin, right opposite the InterContinental Hotel and just five minutes from the beach.

My passion, my vision, my determination, together with Proud Real Estate Group, we really want to develop Hua Hin into a world class resort destination in Asia, that’s the intention. I think the people that live in Hua Hin, Cha Am, Phetchaburi and Pranburi will be happy with the way we have lifted up the city in a good way and we are proud to do that in the city of our beloved King & Queen and all of the Royal family.

We call BluPort “A journey to the port of pleasure and leisure.” Pleasure is because you have happiness, leisure is because you have all kind of sports. You have great golf courses, you can go swimming, you can go to Vana Nava, you can sail, you can play tennis at True Arena, you can do lots of sports here. Currently Hua Hin gets six million tourists a year but it’s no problem to up that to ten million tourists. As when we built the Emporium in Bangkok, when we come there will be more development, more condominiums, more hotels. And, people are living longer. Hua Hin has been rated #7 in the world as a retirement place and rated in the top 5 of rising destinations within Asia. So, due to all of that we believe BluPort has excellent potential for the future. HM: When you were planning BluPort, were there any stores that you thought we just have to have? K. Supaluck: I think it was more about the style of the Mall. I couldn’t just

October 15 - November 15 , 2016

HM: Khun Supaluck, thank you so much for spending your valuable time with us.

HM: Khun Pasu, as a leading property developer in Thailand and one who has built extensively in Hua Hin, what made you think the time was right for a mall of this size in Hua Hin? K. Pasu: Proud Real Estate sees a great opportunity of investment in Hua Hin’s tourism industry. Hua Hin is Thailand’s most beloved resort town and has been tremendously popular among the highend visitors for a long time. Thanks to its favorable geographic location as a link between the Central and the Southern regions, and a diversity of attractions, beautiful natural scenery and cultural arts, Hua Hin acts as a hub for Thailand's trade, commerce and investments in many sectors. With over 6 million visitors each year and more than 20,000 expats in town, Hua Hin offers hotels and resorts with over 16,000 rooms, side by side with a total of condominium projects both operating and under construction at 45,000 units. Moreover, the area will soon be supported by high-tech infrastructure systems like the Bangkok-Hua Hin Highspeed Train and double-track railways. Through this direction of development in Hua Hin toward its role as an international tourism destination, Proud Real Estate is committed to extending its investments along with promoting famous attractions in the town and developing more mixed-use projects, such as InterContinental Hua Hin Resort, Vana Nava Hua Hin Waterpark, and True Arena Hua Hin sport complex. Among Proud Real Estate’s key developments, BluPort Hua Hin Resort Mall marks a huge step of success in achievement of the company’s vision. In a joint venture with The Mall Group, the BluPort provides more convenience with comprehensive lifestyle shopping

Proud Real Estate's Park 24

for customers as it is located next to the hotel and beachside through a mere 5-minute walk. With the realization that the tourism industry is one of Thailand’s strengths promoting income distribution to the local economy, Proud Real Estate will continue to invest in order to improve the tourism standards in Hua Hin and Thailand to meet global standards in future." HM: In the initial planning, were there any stores or brands that you thought we had to have at BluPort K. Pasu: For me, it was the Food and Beverage part that was important. I think that’s the reason most people go to the shopping mall now, maybe you could get food delivery, but it’s not the same, as an example in this tea shop that we are sitting now with its nice decorations. I felt we needed a decent amount of F&B outlets that were high quality but not high quality as in expensive that separates themselves from the majority of the people, otherwise you end up with a shopping mall with nobody in it. The other thing that was important to me was that everything had to be planned for the future. HM: Traffic, from the moment word got out that Hua Hin was going to have BluPort, this wonderful shopping mall, people were asking how it will impact traffic. What sort of plans have been made to handle this? K. Pasu: I think one of the most annoying things for me, when I am

going to the shopping mall, is the traffic. When you think, “oh my god, how long is it going to take to get there,” when you can actually see the Mall and you are stuck in your car. What does a man have to do to go grocery shopping on a Saturday afternoon? Which, by the way, is the worst time to go grocery shopping when everyone is there. So I think we’ve tried to be very delicate with the situation. At the end of the day we want the customers experience to be good and we have to consider the people who live around there as well. So we’ve discussed with the department of highway people, both the police and the city have been very helpful when we were planning everything. Every time we talk to tenants, and customers when we have the opportunity, we highlight the different ways they can come to BluPort. For shoppers living that way, you can come down Soi 112, past MahaSamutr and take a back road that will take you to a very big car park, 24 rai of carpark space. I think you will never have problems finding parking. In addition to the 24 rai, we also have about 5 floors of parking in the shopping mall itself. And we’ve really worked hard to manage the traffic flow. We have worked with the police and hired our own traffic consultants to maximize flow and we have also redesigned, refurbished and improved the pavement all around the shopping mall.

K. Pasu: We’re actually working on another shopping mall venture in Phuket, again with the Mall Group, called BluPearl, although I think we will play a smaller role than we did in Hua Hin. There we will focus more on the Hotels were building along with the water park next to them. HM: This is off topic, but your personal focus within Proud Real Estate is more residential than commercial isn’t it? Such as Proud’s Bangkok condominium project Park 24 and has that started yet? K. Pasu: Yes, BluPort is the only project in Hua Hin I am involved in. In Bangkok I am focused on our Park 24 Condominium project where we’re looking at transferring the first two towers to our buyers by mid-next year. Six to nine months later we will transfer the other three towers with total condominium units at around one thousand two hundred. HM: That has to be Proud’s biggest project to date, isn’t it? K. Pasu: Yes, by sales it is our biggest one. The total sales on that one, if we are able to sell everything, will be around seventy billion baht. HM: Khun Pasu, thank you so much for spending your valuable time with us.

HM: Khun Pasu, do you see Proud Real Estate developing more Shopping Malls?

It is considered to be one of the best hotels in Sukhumvit which guarantees guests an unsurpassed experience of sheer luxury and leisure. The Westin Grande is conveniently located right next to the BTS Asok Skytrain at a mere three-minute walk which is also linked to the Sukhumvit MRT station. These two modes of public transport will make avoiding Bangkok traffic as easy as it can get. The surroundings of The Westin Grande have it all; Terminal21, an incredible mall located right next to the hotel with curvilinear glass and steel facades which appear to look like a modern airport in middle of the city. A fun theme which reoccurs inside the mall with its various floors representing different destinations around the globe, from London to San Francisco, and Istanbul to Tokyo. In addition, the surroundings of the hotel have an array of restaurants nearby, shops, movie halls, and entertainment of all sorts which will make guests’ stay at the Westin Grande Sukhumvit far off from being boring. Not only is the positioning of the Westin Grande Sukhumvit key, but the hotel itself is not short of impressing anybody who walks by. It boasts of 362 sophisticated and well-equipped rooms. The rooms are big and spacious, with modern décor, all of which can accommodate a maximum of three people and are equipped with a television, safety box, hot water for tea or coffee, wellappointed bathrooms and incredible views to the city. These are divided into four different categories; Deluxe rooms, Premium Deluxe Rooms, Westin Executive Club Rooms and the Deluxe Suites.

We had the pleasure of staying in their Westin Executive Club One Bedroom Suite. At 70 square meters it was quite spacious and certainly well appointed. Situated on the hotel’s upper floors, the one-bedroom hotel suites entail a living room with sitting and work areas, as well as a separate bedroom with a sitting area and their world-renowned Heavenly® Bed. The master bathroom features a shower and separate bathtub while a guest powder room provides convenience. Inclusive of the suite is their exclusive Westin Executive Club Lounge access and all the perks that involves, like evening cocktails. The Westin’s Heavenly® Bed is not a feature to just gloss over. Specifically designed for the Westin, the trademarked bed has been so popular with their guests that due to demand they are now sold in high-end outlets throughout America. As one Westin guest said after spending a night on their heavenly bed, “It’s sleeping like the dead.” Going one step further, the Westin has even designed the “Westin Sleep Well Menu” which is a curated selection of sleep-enhancing superfoods developed in partnership with SuperFoodsRX and exclusively available through their in-room dining service. For me, when determining what separates a four-star hotel from a five-star hotel, it’s the extra touches. Returning to my room one evening, after the maid had been in and completed her “turndown service” I contemplated a nightcap. Eying an ice bucket, I wondered while lifting the lid and sure enough, it was filled with ice waiting for me, without me having to ask. The Westin offers four dining venues within the hotel; Seasonal Tastes offers its services all day and has breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets whereby you can enjoy international flavours from all over the globe. Their Kisso Japanese Restaurant, (which we reviewed in our August 2016 issue), is for those with a refined taste in both traditional and contemporary Japanese cuisine and who want to enjoy their food in an authentic environment, Zest Bar and Terrace where guests can enjoy the cityscape while sipping on a drink and finally the Pool Bar to enjoy a meal under the magnificent light of the Thai sun. The Westin’s daily buffet breakfast is one of the best in Bangkok. My benchmark for a 5-star breakfast is if the egg station offers Eggs Benedict on a daily basis, here they do and I was happily contented.

Phnom Penh

October 15 - November 15 , 2016

L

ocated on the banks of the Tonle Sap and the Mekong river which provide freshwater and natural resources to its 1.5 million inhabitants, is Cambodia’s capital and centre of industrial activities and cultural heritage, the mystical city of Phnom Penh. The capital is located in the south-central region of Cambodia, and is fully surrounded by one of the main provinces known as, the Kandal Province. The legend of the founding of Phnom Penh tells the story of a local woman, Penh, who lived at what used to be known as the chaktomuk, or what was going to be the future Phnom Penh. While gathering firewood along the banks of the river, Lady Penh encountered a floating koki tree in the river and picked it out from the water. Inside the tree, she found four beautiful Buddha statues and one of Vishnu, Hindu God of creation, upkeep and destruction. The discovery was taken as a divine blessing, and to some a sign that the Khmer capital was to be brought to Phnom Penh from Angkor. To give the new found sacred objects an

adequate place, Penh raised a small hill on the west bank of the Tonle Sap River and crowned it with a shrine, known today as Wat Phnom, which is still found today at the north end of central Phnom Penh. 'Phnom' is Khmer for 'hill' and Penh's hill took on the name of the founder, and the area around it became known after the hill - Phnom Penh. Phnom Penh is blessed with a much desired weather from the west which consists of tropical wet and dry climate. This means that the city is hot all year round with minor variations throughout the year and according to the season. The rainy season tends to fall on the months from May to October and the dry season goes on from January to February. Phnom Penh stands out amongst all cities in South East Asia due to the

aesthetic and historical architecture of surviving French colonial buildings as well as the many culture oriented attractions it has to offer stemming from its rich historical background. The oldest structure is Wat Phnom from the founding days of the city, constructed in 1373. The wealthiest and biggest city of Cambodia has a lot to offer. The main tourist attractions are the Royal Palace with the Silver Pagoda, and the National Museum, constructed during the French colonial era in the late 19th century in the classical Khmer style and hosting a vast collection of Khmer antiquities. The French, who were the colonial masters from the 19th century to the 1940s, made sure to leave their mark around the city. They did so by

establishing various colonial villas, impressive French churches, romantic boulevards, and the famous Art Deco market Phsar Thom Thmei. Another notable landmark of the colonial era, specifically 1929, is the Hotel Le Royal situated one kilometre away from Wat Phnom Temple and the Art Deco market. This is a venue where passers-by can enjoy the fabulous Cambodian style dÊcor while enjoying a meal at the hotel’s famous restaurant which serves French and Cambodian fusion cuisine or enjoy an alcoholic beverage at their iconic cocktail bar. The history books have said it, and it was the possibly unfortunate French colonization in Cambodia, which allowed Phnom Penh to be considered one of the most beautiful French-built cities in Indochina.

Phnom Penh is also known for its influence on New Khmer Architecture. Starting with independence from the French in the 1950s and lasting until the era of the Khmer Rouge in the 1970s, Phnom Penh underwent tremendous growth as the capital city of a newly independent country. King Sihanouk, who was reigning at the time, was eager to present a new style of architecture and thus stimulate the process of creating a bold, strong and unique nation. This is what allowed a new golden era of architecture to take off, with various projects and young Khmer architects, often educated in France, given opportunities to design and construct. This new movement was called "New Khmer Architecture" and was often characterised by a fusion of Bauhaus using a combination of crafts and fine arts, European post-modern architecture, and traditional elements from Angkor, the capital city of the Khmer Empire from the 9th to the 15th century. In order to truly enjoy the Phnom Penh experience, one may choose to visit the capital during Chaul Chnam Thmey which usually occurs from midApril. During these days, Phnom Penh celebrates the Cambodian New Year, an occasion which has with time gotten increasingly popular amongst tourists. During this time, which is typically the hottest part of the year, the game is to throw water around, which adds to the party atmosphere along with stress release dancing and music beats from all over. The precise dates of new Year changes year-by-year since it is guided by the Lunar calendar, but this holiday lasts, at least, three days. This festival marks the turn of the year based on the ancient Khmer calendar and also marks the end of the prior year harvest. Another pleasant month to visit Phnom Penh in is November, when the largest annual festival in Phnom Penh takes place. It is a lively gathering which celebrates the reversing of the flow of the Tonle Sap river. The holiday lasts three days as people flood into the city to enjoy the fireworks, colourful boat races, live concerts, eating and partying. A new activity for foreginers may be the boat racing, which dates back to ancient times marking the strengths of the Khmer marine forces during the Khmer Empire. Another side of Phnom Penh which enriches you culturally and helps the average tourist truly understand and empathize both what made the city great and what made it suffer are the monuments and memorials to the genocide during the Khmer Rouge era in the 1970s. First of all, the National Museum, which is Cambodia’s most visited museum and provides historical and cultural background of the entire country. Other settings are the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, a former

62

October 15 - November 15 , 2016

Khmer Rouge prison, which used to be a high school and was used as a concentration camp. On the outskirts of the city, one can visit the Choeung Ek Genocidal Centre which depicts as historically accurately and concisely as possible and gives its audience a deeper understanding of the many atrocities that once occurred in the land of Cambodia. Another important site to visit is the Cambodia-Vietnam Friendship Monument, which was commissioned by the Vietnamese communists as symbol of Khmer-Vietnamese friendship during the late 1970s following the liberation of Cambodia from the Khmer Rouge. Finally, Phnom Penh is a city which must be tasted slowly, its profound history, its rich architecture, its invigorating culture, and its delicious food. The city is notable for Ka tieu, Phnom Penh’s variation on rice-noodle soup, a dish available in sit-down cafes as well as 'street' cafes. Other must try dishes are the simple yet delicious Bai Sach Chrouk, which is basically thinly sliced pork slowly grilled over warm coals with rice. Fish Amok, one of the famous Cambodian dishes, a fish mousse made with fresh coconut milk and spiced with local herbs which create irreplaceable subtle bitter flavours. The Khmer Red Curry is also a must try, palette friendly for the west since it’s not as spicy as the curries found in neighbouring countries the dish can be made with beef chicken or fish and includes eggplant, green beans, potatoes, coconut milk, and the refreshing lemongrass. And to wash it all down, a typical sweet desert. In Phnom Penh the young love Cha Houy Teuk which is basically a jelly dessert made with sticky rice drenched in coconut milk and topped off with condiments such as taro, red beans, pumpkin or jackfruit. Phnom Penh will not disappoint. The city is both the economic and cultural centre of Cambodia; Music and the Arts are making a strong and impactful revival throughout Cambodia, especially in Phnom Penh which currently hosts a number of music events throughout the city. 'Indie' bands have grown in number and exploring the city is as enriching as one can imagine. The city's large impressive temples, the maze like palaces, the fragments of its French colonial history and a history which has left deep scars are a combination unlike any other. Phnom Penh is an “It” city and is awaiting to be rediscovered.

S

ometimes one just wishes to dine over the view of a fabulously illuminated city. Looking over the mega metropolis that is Bangkok from the heights of a skyscraper is an experience every person must have when visiting Thailand. Whilst it is true that one can be spoilt for choice, some places have a fantastic distinction due to the uniqueness of their setting. This month, the HOT Magazine team stepped it up - to the 60th floor of Bangkok’s Banyan Tree Hotel. Up in the heights was their Vertigo TOO restaurant, waiting for us to savour the fantastic culinary delicacies it had to offer. Walking into the Vertigo TOO is already a marvelous experience. Through

the modernistic decor and the spiraling staircase, one arrives at a setting of dim lights and cool ambiance, ready to settle for a table by the live band and its melodic ballads. Extravagant white chairs contrast with the shades of the dim, romantic setting. Quickly coming to Illuminate the scene were the fabulous menus. Made of self-illuminated backlit panels, they’re a call for undivided attention - and we did just that. Starting our evening with a cocktail was definitely the way to go - and what better way to do it that with the finalist of the Bacardi Legacy Global Cocktail Competition 2016? The Haole, as it is known, hit the spot right from the beginning. Balanced with a sweet

and citrusy touch, the quality of the pineapple mixed with the rum was fabulous and refreshing. First up for the entrees were the Tom Yum Rolls, consisting of poached tiger prawns, Tom yum reduction and Thai spices. Brought in an exceptionally fancy plate, with a fantastic set of individual curled spoons on which the prawns were placed, they truly were an early highlight. Side pieces of lemon were set to be juiced onto the each piece and the flavour did not disappoint. Incredibly flavourful, it started tangy with a strong hint of lemon grass before releasing an intense and deep flavour of fresh lime. Slightly spicy and wholly aromatic, it raised the bar 60 stories.

Next to grace the table was the Angus Beef Tartar, a delicate marvel on its own. As gourmet as dishes can get, it consisted of raw premium Australian beef, tartar seasoning and a quail egg yolk to top it all. Beautifully textured and set up, it combines hints of peppery mustard and deep herbal aromas. Combined with the quail egg yolk, ready to be popped over the top, it was a spectacular combination of flavours and experience. This was just the right time to have the next cocktail of the night, the Vertigo Sunset. Pineapple Pampero rum combined seamlessly with the Malibu, crème de cassis and adding to the citrusy were the orange and lime, topped by the sweet touch of cranberry. Intense in flavours, fruity and with deep aromatic aromas, it made for a fantastic accompaniment to our next dish. The Angus Beef Medallion was a treat of its own: wrapped in bacon, with wild mushrooms, garlic potatoes, asparagus and a flavourful pepper sauce, it was delicate, tender, cooked to perfection and oozed juiciness, whilst the hits of charcoal combined marvelously with the notes of wine from the sauce. Next came the Chicken Tikka, with braised signature masala, fabulously homemade garlic naan bread and a raita yogurt and tamarind relish. Original and balanced, it emanated a smoky and wholesome flavour, with aromatic whiffs of masala which formed a perfect relationship with the naan. The raita brought an invigorating freshness, with a touch of tangy tamarind. It all did the trick for this one.

We couldn’t have ended in a better way than with the desserts. Rising up to the occasion was the Deconstructed Banana Split, which constructed a fabulous array of exploding flavours in the palate. The banana sponge cake was beautifully tender, the mascarpone giving it a creamy touch, the banana brulé combined to perfection with the mar sauce and the chocolate-bacon just gave that touch of exciting extravagance. Lastly was the Baked Alaska, a fruity fantasy topped with some flambé fun. Meringue, vanilla ice cream, strawberry ice cream and seasonal fruits, from blueberries to raspberries combined spectacularly with the intense mix of the aromatic flaming liquor. Overall, fancy, greatly themed and attractive, the Vertigo TOO is a fantastic venue in which to dine, take in the view, or even sing - Thursday night is open mic! If you haven’t been, you definitely should. Vertigo TOO Banyan Tree Bangkok Hotel 21/100 South Sathon Road +66 (0) 2679 1200 bangkok@banyantree.com

Siam Gypsy Junction

72

October 15 - November 15 , 2016

I

n case you haven’t heard, Bangkok has a new vintage market. If you miss what Rod Fai Train Market used to be before it became so “mainstream”, the Siam Gypsy Junction will be an exciting new venue for you. The Siam Gypsy Junction’s location is out past Bang Sue railway and subway station, which means it is slightly far off from the public transport network; the mainline railway track runs right alongside the market and the recently completed Bang Son station will in the future be used for those who want to get to the Gypsy Junction Market. For now, getting there involves an 80 baht tuktuk

ride, several kilometres away from the BangSue station and as it used to happen during the beginning days of the Rod Fai Market, a lot of Taxi drivers still don’t know about Siam Gypsy Junction, which is why the tuk tuk driver may be more convenient since the driver is most likely to have local knowledge. When you reach the market, you will encounter local traders selling rusty knickknacks from the back of trucks and camper vans, there’s a particular spread of Vespa motorbikes and other vaguely antique looking motorbikes. The market is set along a road running beside the railway line for several kilometres, goods

are laid out on the-ground whereby vendors are framed by the railway track. Other things that one can encounter are a number of bars and casual eateries, the Bangkok Bus for example, is where you can sit on the roof of a school bus while gulping down bottles of beers with your mates. The drinks are cheap and there are a few snack options which are greatly combined with the alcoholic beverages. Among all the bars and little vending shops, one may perhaps encounter an odd hairdresser between tons of vintage items where one can choose a cut that’s in tune with the latest Thai trends.

October 15 - November 15 , 2016

73

For now, the mainstream vendors of mass-produced clothing have yet to make it to this market which leaves Siam Gypsy Junction as the terrain for those with a love for not-quite-antique furniture, crockery, music posters, second-hand clothes and all manner of other jumble. There is plenty of food and drinks, plenty to wander to find that special little something which you will not comprehend why you bought but which will take a special place in your heart. The entire market has a completely different vibe to it, it is low-key, yet rather bizarre and hard to explain, there are reoccurring wild west cowboy themes, hence an area halfway down the walkway is decked out with bundles of hay which has been transformed to make the perfect communal seating area. Some of the bars also have interesting countryand-western style saloon doors which just adds to the entire feel of the place. If this is beginning to make you feel like you miss the old Rod Fai and its making you hate its current large crowds, if you are craving something new to reignite your love for the rawness of Bangkok’s latest trend in hipstervintage flea markets, then Siam Gypsy Junction is the place to be. But get there soon because, a little unusual treasure like this one won’t be as special for too long. Expect it to quickly become popular and sadly lose the vibes it radiates at the moment. Siam Gypsy Junction is a little alternative; expect plenty of dark-clothed, tattooed, and long-haired customers and traders, just what we want to see in our average vintage markets! Siam Gypsy Junction night market; Wednesday-Sunday, 6pm-1am
