Dear Reader Welcome to issue 11/12 Volume 5 of HOT Magazine. When one thinks of Thailand, thoughts of beautiful tropical islands or the very cosmopolitan metropolis of Bangkok probably come to mind. At the bottom of the list, if it even made the list, would be coats, jumpers and wool hats. Our “Let’s Go” feature this month takes us to six places in the Kingdom where you might want to wear all three. Come join us on page 36 to see where the “cool” people in Thailand go. Longtime Hua Hin resident Constance “Connie” Heinecke sadly passed away last month. By anyone’s measure she led an amazing adventure filled life. During her lifetime she lived across the street from John F. Kennedy, was a tour guide to Marilyn Monroe in Japan, entertained world famous boxer Jack Dempsey in her and her husband’s Hong Kong home and in Malta was given just 24 hours to leave the country because the leftist government believed she and her husband to be CIA spies. In 2014 HOT Magazine profiled Connie who at that time was 95 years old. In honor of Connie we are pleased to run her article once again, that’s on page 42.

Bill attended Bangkok’s International School. After graduation he borrowed $1,200 USD’s to start a commercial office cleaning service. Fast forward 50 years and Bill’s Minor International Corporation is a global powerhouse with a $5.3 billion USD Market Cap employing over 64,000 people. Turn to page 64 and prepare to be impressed. The sixth annual Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat show, one of Thailand’s premier marine events, recently took place for the sixth year in a row. Bigger than ever, this 4 day event drew over 4,500 spectators to see everything from day boats to super yachts. Search out your deck shoes and turn to page 74. Those are just a few of the stories you’ll find inside this month. It’s time to wind down 2017 and bring in the new year. We hope 2017 has treated you well and we wish you the happiest and healthiest year yet in 2018. As always, thank you for picking us up and we hope you enjoy the read.

Next up we introduce you to another Heinecke who’s led an amazing life. HOT Magazine is thrilled to bring you our interview with business legend Bill Heinecke. As a teenager

The InterContinental Hua Hin Resort presents Chef Takagi Kazuo from Japan Over the weekend of November 11th and 12th at the InterContinental Hua Hin Resort, selected guests were treated to incredible meals prepared by Michelin Two Starred Chef Takagi Kazuo from Japan. Kazuo is the owner-chef of ‘Kyoto cuisine TAKAGI’ in Ashiya, a city between Osaka and Kobe. The restaurant has held two Michelin stars since 2010, and Takagi himself is a recognized master of the super refined Kyoto style of Japanese cuisine known as ‘Kyo-ryori.’ Famous for its innovation in terms of both the food itself and the decoration, Kyo-ryori cuisine uses unique and traditional methods to unfold and celebrate cultural tales and capture the changing seasons of Kyoto.

The complexity of Takagi’s picturesque, jewel-like creations, which include many styles of preparation, is designed to appeal to all of the senses, as well as extending the dining experience to an awareness of seasonal change, poetic beauty and the bounty and versatility of nature. Chef Takagi’s delicate soup is the most symbolic element of his cooking. According to him, “The taste and aroma of a soup characterizes one’s culinary style.” In honor of Chef Takagi’s visit, Sunday’s lunch was attended by special guests including Hua Hin’s Lord Mayor, Vice Mayor and TAT Governor as well as selected media. The five-course meal was perfectly paired with amazing Japanese Sake’s.

The event was held at the InterContinental’s “La Residence.” Set on a beautiful half acre of beachfront land next door to the InterContinental, La Residence is an elegant feat of colonial style architecture imitating King Rama VI’s 19th Century Royal Summer Palace in Hua Hin. The 220-square meter two-storey home is reached via a private entrance and includes walled gardens and an infinity edge swimming pool with direct beach access. The InterContinental Hua Hin Resort will continue to fly in Michelin Starred Chef’s for future special lunches and dinners. Give them a call to be put on their mailing list, +66 (0) 32 616 999.

MCC Is Back And Better Than Ever Walk into any bar in Thailand and chances are within 5 minutes you will hear the song “Hotel California” by the Eagles. For some reason it seems to be the National Anthem for Thailand’s Bars. The Eagles, one of the most successful musical acts of the 70’s first broke up in 1980 and it wasn’t long before fans were screaming for a reunion tour. In Hua Hin we had a similar situation when Khun Lizzy, the Grande Dame of Hua Hin told her guests at her MCC in January of this year that it would be her very last. MCC, which stands for MultiCultural Community, is an event that Lizzy had put on for four years. It is a fundraising evening that is always held at a Five-Star Hua Hin Hotel and includes a wonderful buffet, free flow of beverages, music, dancing and the possibility to win many prizes via a raffle. Hundreds, if not thousands of friendships have been forged over the course of MCC’s run. Just like The Eagles, it didn’t take long before Lizzy’s fans were screaming for another MCC and on November 15th Lizzy delivered with her MCC evening at the Royal Dusit Hall. Over 250 guests paid 1,700 baht each for the pleasure of joining in and there were smiling faces everywhere. When asked, Lizzy said she would like to give big thanks to Rotarian’s GIANNI BATTISTINI & KHUN NAPA KEAWTEM who helped with the organization of the event, STEVE JOHNSTON from Surf 102.5FM for providing the music and all those who particiapted in the Flag Parade. Lizzy also wanted to thank her special VIP guests, KHUN RUTPRATEEB THAMMAPIPAT, Chief District Officer & Hua Hin Deputy Lord Mayor KHUN MONTRI Lizzy’s MCC reunion tour is continuing with her next event scheduled for January 20th. The location is still being worked out but do email her to find out more information, lizzy.huahin@mycity-thailand.com.

ome restaurants in Bangkok combine the gracefulness of a Parisian setting and the exotic style of a modern Eastern eatery. With the large tiled marble floors and the sharp finishing contrasted with the alternating colours of a rustic décor, half the hunger can be satisfied from just looking around. Large ceiling lamps dangle down, with a yellow luminescence which likens them to pearls. Simple but elegant caned chairs await the diner, with pristine white table cloths laid below patterned water glasses which just invite for a seat, as an invitation to a brunch. This month HOT Magazine has the pleasure to review the Oriental Residence’s Café Claire. Our team was warmly greeted by the manager and taken to one of the sofa seats, the dark coloration of which strikes a sharp contrast to the rest of the table setting. There to greet us was an attentive waitress who made sure everything was in order. To refresh the palate came first a classic house cocktail: the Kiwi Wireless. Named after Wireless Road on which the restaurant sits, the drink possessed citrusy notes and a very defined tropical taste which set the night off on an oriental style, a perfect mesh for what was to come later on. It wasn’t long before the first dish of the night was served at the table. Making their way were six luscious Fine de Claire oysters with vinaigrette. The freshness of this dish was palpable. Oysters in particular can be deceiving should they not possess the utmost quality, and these certainly did. The chunks of onion gave an earthy touch to the acidity of the vinaigrette, which balanced the meal to perfection. The next dish to make its way to the table was their Escargot de Bourgogne a l'ai, which again was a risky one. Not only is this one of the few restaurants where these notoriously delicious French delicacies are served, but it makes them quite magnificently. An escargot which lacks taste can essentially mount to being an unpleasant experience, but Café Claire has that one under control. The roasted aroma and the fine balance of flavours made of it a fantastic dish.

We were subsequently treated to Truite Grenobloise, a Chiang Mai Trout pan fried, brown butter sauce with capers, lemon, parsley and lemon juice, a marvellously prepared dish. Aromatic and filling the palate with A salty zest which brought out the character of the Maniere with caper sauce. The next dish was the salmon Tarter which showed us a different side of the fish’s goodness. Tender and juicy, it was very well contrasted by the citrusy hit of the berry compote. We briefly moved away from the sea, and back on dry land awaited the Cuisse de canard confit - Deuck leg confit served with Dauphinois potatoes which contended very intensely with the previous two dishes. Cooked to perfection and boasting of that crispy outer coat, it led the tooth into a surprise tenderness upon the first bite. Contrasted with the asparagus it really presented a perfect combination.

Back in the sea – and in what a way – came the grandiosity of the Maine Lobster. This by far outweighed other dishes, with a striking presentation which dwarfed the large plate on which it was served. Notes of cheese struck familiar as the cream contrasted with the undeniable quality of the lobster. Mushrooms and assorted vegetables balanced the rest of the dish, a fantastic contrast to what was a signature meal which can be prepared any way you like. Round about this time, came the Berry Mojito, which helped us transition into the dessert with the deep taste of its fruity redness. The Ananas caramelise a la vanilla par Gerard Salle came as a great first taster, with its striking combination of flavours and the citrusy twang of the Caramelized pineapple vanilla, caramel butter tuille and its sweetness provided a fantastic contrast to Caramelized pineapple vanilla, caramel butter tuille.

The dessert highlight though was without a doubt the Hot fudge brownie served with vanilla ice cream. The richness of the brownie and the chocolatey load of the sauce on the sizzling platter was a visual spectacle on its own, cooled down by the rich vanilla ice cream. All in all, Café Claire is definitely a place worth exploring. If you’re tempted by simple yet striking decoration and appreciate the higher spheres of French cuisine, this little bistro on Bangkok’s Wireless Road will have you going oh là là! Top 6 Picks To Get Cool This Winter

We’ve all heard it. The cold shaming, the stereotypical image of our being good just for sunbathing, beaching and seaside cocktail drinking. The “why would you sell winter clothing?” joke. But if one looks at Thailand beyond the mirror of the average, we see that it is indeed possible to make off to places in the kingdom where you will feel a breeze of cold air during the winter and see the frost on cold winter mornings. Some of these places might even make you consider why you ever questioned the sale of winter clothing in stores! Here are Thailand’s Top 6 Picks to get cool this chilly season!

36

HOT Magazine

Phu Chi Fa We start off with one of the northernmost points of the country, well known for its mountainous landscape and lush green scenery. Held above the might of Chiang Rai’s Thoeng District is Phu Chi Fa mountain area and national park, part of the north eastern part of the Phi Pan Nam range that stretches all the way east and borders the Lao People’s Democratic Republic. Phu Chi Fa’s highest peak reaches up more than a kilometre and a half, standing at 1,628 metres. Tourists are often attracted by the beauty of the scenery witnessed from the top. In cold winter mornings it is customary to see a large blanket of mist covering part of the mountain ranges, whilst the tallest peaks peek out over the top almost as observers of the spectacle. Standing atop of this scene, one can almost feel as if he’s recreating the Wanderer above the Sea of Fog, the famous 19th century painting by artist. Kasper David Friedrich. Temperatures in Phu Chi Fa will drop to about 15 degrees, so a jacket is definitely advisable. If you like animals, this is your place too. A significant array of animals and including boars, deer and civets all call the place home.

Khao Chang Phuak Next we move down a little further centre to the iconic province of Kanchanaburi. This province is well known for its history, its symbolic bastion during World War Two, its fantastic waterfalls and it’s great scenery and outdoor activities. But few will go to spend a few days up the hills and mountain tops, of which it also boasts. Our pick for this one is Khao Chang Phueak. Located in Tong Pha Phum district, Khao Chang Phueak overlooks Kanchanaburi majestically. A trek up the mountain will lead you directly to the a spot perfect for sightseeing. The trek, which takes about four to five hours depending on your speed, takes you through flora and fauna up Sharp Mountain Ridge – known by this nickname due to the narrowness of its walkway. Past this and at the top of the 1,250 metre mountain, is a view to die for. The visitor limit however is 60 people a day, so it’s advisable to make sure you’ll get your chance by calling ahead. Visitors mostly stay overnight and leave the morning after, to mark the end of a fantastic little trek.

HOT Magazine

Doi Inthanon The highest mountain in the entire country could definitely not have fallen off the list, and it’s one we recommend visiting at all costs. Doi Inthanon in Chiang Mai province’s Chom Thong district is a national icon and a site of beauty and stands majestically above its 2,565 metres in height. Let’s first of all address the cold factor. Temperatures of six degrees are an average occurrence in winter and temperatures below zero – yes, below zero – have been known in January. Part of a national park of immense lush beauty, Doi Inthanon is ideal for sight seeing. It has two famous temples, or chedis – namely Naphamethinidon and Naphaphonphumisiri, which were built in honour of the late King Bhumibol. Attracting as many as 12,000 visitors just on New Year’s Day, the mountain’s peak is one of the best opportunities to see Chiang Mai – and Thailand – through the highest point on land possible.

Pai It would be a mistake not to include Pai as one of the destinations to get cool in Thailand this winter. The north western province is one of the icons of that area, with plenty of marvellous hills and activities for the visitor which make it an appealing destination for anybody. Located by the border with Myanmar, just short of 150 kilometres from Chiang Mai, Pai is part of Mae Hong Song province and gives its name to the river that dissects it. One of the smaller places in Thailand, Pai boasts a population of about 3,500 people. The charm of Pai other than its scenery resides in the variety of its people, as the town is a melting pot of different ethnic groups including the Lahu, the Hmong, the Lisu and the Karen. All these hilltribes coalesce in this fantastic little place, which has as of late drawn the attention of a large array of tourists. Pai also boasts of a very interesting history, allegedly dating back more than 5,000 years. Pai can get quite chilly, so the jumper is again probably a good idea if you’re looking to be there for a couple of days.

Chiang Khong We then move on to the great province of Chiang Rai, where one of its most curious towns is our next stop for this chilly Thai winter. Chiang Khong is a small place which supposedly mirrors the sister town of Huay Xai across the Laotian border. One of the more interesting facts about this place is that it’s the home of cyclist Alan Bate. The British speedster broke the Guinness World Record for the quickest circumnavigation of the earth on a bike seven years ago, a feat nobody has bested since. This has led a sea of fame to surround the town, opening in his regard a large array of pubs and establishments dedicated to the celebration of his feat – which some however, continue to contest, alleging he may have travelled part of the journey on a pick up truck. Chiang Khong is a as ethnically diverse as Pai, with a great variety of people from various hill tribes. It will definitely get cold, so grab something to keep you warm.

Chiang Khan We then move to Chiang Khan a district in the other side of the north. Located in Loei province in the northernmost area, this place also borders the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and is circled by important rivers such as the mighty Mekong, the Hueang and the Loei. Chiang Khan Boasts a fascinating history and is known to have been established toward the latter end of the 19th century when the French entered Lao for their colonial endeavours. The arrival of Lao people would be succeeded by the arrival of Vietnamese and Chinese merchants who established their trading businesses by the sides of the rivers, bringing the place a great source of financial activity. Chiang Khan’s economy was at one point largely bolstered by the fishing industry from its rich and derivative water sources. This however declined because of several factors such as pollution and overfishing. It has however, become a hub for tourism, which allows holiday makers to get around and experience the culture. Loei’s provincial slogan being “City of the sea of mountains, coldest place in Siam, with beautiful flowers and three seasons” it is evident that jackets are probably recommended upon a visit.

Well there you have it. Thailand can indeed be a place to grab a coat, pullover, a scarf or wear a bonnet if need be. This winter season, pick one of either six and go get chilly in the hilly side of the Land of Smiles. You will definitely not regret it.

Constance Heinecke A life lived, 1919 - 2017

Longtime Hua Hin resident Constance “Connie” Heinecke sadly passed away on November 7th at the age of 98. Connie moved to Hua Hin in 1989 with her husband Roy who died 4 years later. Connie was very active in the community and could be seen regularly in the company of Andrew Stocks, her “adopted” grandson. For 10 years Connie and Andrew had lunch together daily at different restaurants in the Hua Hin area. In 2014 HOT Magazine profiled her amazing life and in honor of Connie we are proud to run her article again.

Connie in her younger days

B

y any measure, 95 year old Constance “Connie” Heinecke has led an amazing adventure filled life. From living across the street from John F. Kennedy in Washington DC to being tour guide to Marilyn Monroe in Japan to entertaining world famous boxer Jack Dempsey in her and her husband’s Hong Kong home. Did I mention that while living in Malta where they had a home for 7 years they were given just 24 hours to leave the country because the leftist government believed them to be CIA spies? Connie grew up in Philadelphia during the depression in a family of 7. She inherited her father’s sense of humor and was known as the “crazy one” in the family. Her memories of the depression were the soup kitchens. Her first job was at age nine selling peanut brittle her mother made to office workers in the newspaper section of town. The candy was individually wrapped with wax paper. Because the candy was sticky her customers complained that the wax paper stuck to the candy. The quick thinking youth’s reply was that you were supposed to eat the paper, just like the Japanese candies that were popular at the time which were wrapped in rice paper. Even though it was 86 years ago Connie can still name off all the stops on the train that took her from her home to the Philadelphia office towers she sold to.

Connie and Roy

When Connie was 17 a girl from her school came by her house with a boy she was seeing and the boy’s brother. The brother’s name was Roy Heinecke. Connie and Roy fell in love and were married in 1942. Neither one of them had much money even though both of them worked. Connie’s first job out of High School was working as a telephone operator while Roy was a U.S. Marine earning just 20 dollars a month. One fateful night Roy won 40 dollars in a poker game and they decided to use that money to get married. While Roy was off to war Connie lived in Philadelphia and then California. They had two children, Skip born in 1943 and Bill who was born 6 years later. When the war ended Roy was stationed in Japan. Roy told her not to come due to the bad conditions at the time but headstrong Connie had her own ideas. Bravely she sold all they owned and along with her two young boys boarded an Oiler ship for the 35 day trip, unannounced, to be with her husband in Japan.

43

The crew on the ship quickly became enamored with the boys and once made a hook from a coat hanger and tied a line to it. They told young Bill to cast the line over the side of the ship to catch fish. The line was just long enough to reach the galley below where one of the kitchen workers would affix a dead fish to the hook and give it a yank. Bill would pull up the line and be thrilled with his “catch.” It was a game that brought much laughter to those aboard. While in Japan Connie worked for the U.S. Armed Forces Newspaper writing a regular column. One day she was asked to escort the newly married Marilyn Monroe around a military hospital. Marilyn had been flown in to cheer up the troops who were recuperating there. Connie has colorful stories to tell of this day. When Roy retired from the Military he went to work for the United States Information Agency where he had his initial training in Washington DC. It was at this time that they lived on N street, directly across the street from the then Senator John F. Kennedy. 44

HOT Magazine

Roy’s first foreign posting was to Hong Kong at the U.S. Embassy where they stayed for five years. In those days it would take 21 days to travel by boat from San Francisco to Hong Kong and they made that trip several times. Connie loved their time in Hong Kong and entertained at their home frequently. Their very first dinner party in their Hong Kong home was for world famous boxer Jack Dempsey and his wife. During this time Connie enjoyed working for a Hong Kong Tourist magazine and then as the first Asian sales rep for Newsweek Magazine. From Hong Kong they moved to Kuala Lumpur for several years and then moved to Bangkok in 1963 where Roy took a job as a war correspondent for Voice of America working out of Saigon and Connie went back to work for Newsweek. Young son Bill was 14 when they arrived in Bangkok and finished his schooling during this period. In 1971 Roy and Connie decided it was time to retire so they moved back to the States settling in Palm

Beach Florida. After spending so much time in Asia however it was just a few years before they decided they wanted to return. They moved back to Bangkok to be close to their son Bill who while still only in his mid 20’s was making a name for himself in the business world. While holidaying in Pattaya, Connie and Roy became friends with a family from London with the last name of Stocks, they were in the hotel business. The Stocks had a young son named Andrew who took an immediate shining to Connie. Andrew adored his own grandmother who had passed away very young and he saw a substitute in Connie. Through the years Connie has become Andrew’s “stepgrandma” and they have developed a very special bond, so much so that for the last ten years Andrew and Connie have been meeting daily to have lunch together.

(Article Reprinted from HOT Magazine June 2014 Issue)

Connie and Roy stayed in Bangkok until 1976 when they moved to a beautiful villa in Malta overlooking the Mediterranean. She and Roy loved their time there and made many friends. Life was wonderful until one fateful day in 1981 when the leftist government accused them of being CIA spies and gave them just 24 hours to leave the country. 24 hours did not give them enough time to pack all their belongings but friends helped and most was retrieved. From Malta the couple moved to Santa Barbra in California to be close to their oldest son Skip who was a movie executive at 20th Century Fox. Through Skip, Connie and Roy became close to Hollywood celebrities including Ronald Regan and his wife Nancy. Even when the Regan’s moved to the White House they would continue to send Connie and Roy a card on their anniversary, memento’s she still has. Knowing

Presidents seems to run in the family, Connie’s grandfather was the personal photographer to Teddy Roosevelt. Connie loved to work and while in Santa Barbara, a very exclusive community, she set about buying and selling houses always turning a nice profit on each one. In 1989 while on holiday in Thailand their son Skip had a serious scuba diving accident, so serious that Connie and Roy came back to Thailand to be with their son. Thankfully Skip recovered and returned to the States. For Connie and Roy however, after living in 54 homes in 7 countries they decided to settle down once and for all in Hua Hin. Sadly, Roy passed away from cancer in 1993, Connie remained in Hua Hin and still lives here to this day. After Roy’s passing, Connie and her son Bill set up the Roy E. Heinecke Foundation which supports the less fortunate children throughout

Thailand who have outstanding records of performance. Each year, the foundation gives scholarships to 449 students which help support their education from early learning stages through to graduation. On Connie’s 90th birthday the family threw a large birthday party for her with over 450 guests. At the party they raised $225,000 U.S. Dollars for the foundation. Connie, who has always been a great joke teller, decided to put together a joke book of some of her favorites with all monies going to the foundation. Her Book “A Connoisseur’s Choice of Jokes” received rave reviews. Connie proudly states that even Australia’s richest woman, Gina Rinehart has a copy. When asked what her happiest memory is, Connie doesn’t hesitate in saying that her happiest memory was of her wedding day. She then added “I’m the luckiest girl in the world, I’ve lived a wonderful life”.

Skip & Kathleen

Connie’s son Skip has retired from the movie business and now lives in Ireland collecting cars. He and his wife Kathleen have one son Christopher who lives in Los Angeles Son Bill is the Billionaire founder of Minor International. He and his wife Kathy live in Bangkok and have two sons, John who lives in Bangkok and David who lives in Portland Oregon, both have two children.

group of friends or a large family. Additionally, there is a two-bedroom Sea View Villa. Dining options abound here starting with their all-day dining restaurant “STAA’S.” STAA’s is where you’ll go for Breakfast with a full buffet spread and live cooking stations. STAA’S also serves a wide range of favourites for lunch and dinner, including tasty Thai appetizers, salads and things between bread, spicy curries, pastas and pizzas, and chargrilled fresh seafood. The AVANI brings back beachfront Italian fine dining to Hua Hin with their new restaurant “Brezza”, open from noon until 10:30 pm and should certainly be checked out. Additional food and beverage outlets include the “Terrace Bar & Light Bite,” a relaxed, outdoor grab

n go pantry and Aqua, the AVANI’s chilled pool bar featuring drinks and light bites. Guests staying in the Villa’s will have their own private lounge to unwind in called appropriately enough the “Villa Lounge.” A highlight of the Resort will be the AVANI’s “Blue Biscuit Jazz” Lounge which will make its debut on New Year’s Eve. In addition to great sultry Jazz, Blue Biscuit will feature creole inspired bites along with some of the best cocktails in Hua Hin. A big feature of the AVANI Hua Hin is their Hammam Spa. Hammam became popular around 600 AD in Morocco and holds centuries of Middle Eastern wellness secrets. A Hammam Spa Treatment begins with a steam session to relieve tension and opens pores. Reclining on a heated

marble table, your skin is cleansed by Natural Black Soap with Eucalyptus and polished to smooth perfection with a kessa mit. A Rhassoul Mask of mineral clay drenches skin in vital hydration and nourishment, whilst hair is cleansed and the scalp massaged. The ritual concludes with a lavish application of moisturiser for skin that is soft and supple to the touch. To ensure that your hammam journey offers the most luxurious experience possible, the AVANI Spa selected the Dumaroc product line which has more than 100 years of expertise in creating professional spa products inspired by oriental beauty secrets. The gym is equipped with the latest cardio and weight-training machines and the resort has mapped out a jogging and cycling track so guests can keep up with their exercise routines should they want to whilst on holiday. Active guests can also choose to partake in a range of waters ports, such as kite surfing,

sailing and stand up paddle board yoga. Your youngsters are not forgotten here as they have their very own club. Looked after by a qualified and caring team, your children will enjoy a variety of activities, including pool time, marine adventures, facepainting and indoor games. The AVANI also features a large Ballroom. With 900 square metres of space, it is one of the largest event spaces in Hua Hin, and the perfect setting for a decadent wedding or a conference with enough space to easily accommodate banquets of 500 people and theatre style seating for 700 people. The Ballroom can also be re-configured to offer up to five smaller meeting rooms or event venues. Expanding on his previous role as General Manager of the Anantara Hua Hin Resort, Manish Jha will expand his proven leadership role by also overseeing the AVANI

Hua Hin. Under Manish’s skillful management, the Anantara Hua Hin Resort received a number of accolades. This year alone, the Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards 2017 ranked Anantara Hua Hin Resort Number 1 Top Resort in Asia as well as Number 9 among the Best Resorts in the World. The AVANI Hua Hin Resort & Villas is a fantastic addition to Hua Hin’s hospitality scene and is sure to become a guest favorite in no time. For Hua Hin locals, the new dining venues along with the Blue Biscuit Jazz Club will make living in Hua Hin just that much better! he next 10 years will witness an increase of about 236 million people aged 65 and older throughout the world. Thereafter, from 2025 to 2050, the older population is projected to almost double to 1.6 billion globally, whereas the total population will grow by just 34 percent over the same period. Population aging, while due primarily to lower fertility, also reflects a human success story of increased longevity. Today, living to age 70 or age 80 is no longer a rarity in many parts of the world. However, increasing longevity has led to new challenges: How many years can older people expect to live in good health? What are the chronic diseases that they may have to deal with? How long can they live independently? Will they have sufficient economic resources to last their lifetimes? Can they afford health care costs? A man who has put a lot of thought into the dilemma faced by this aging generation is Andrew Stocks, a Brit who moved to Thailand several years ago. According to Andrew, “Moving into a retirement home in Europe is often so expensive that people are being forced to sell their homes. Also, living in a home in Europe is often no fun at all, with the bad weather most months of the year, very few people move out from the room they are staying in.“ Andrew noticed over the past few years that Hua Hin is becoming more and more a favorite for retirees to move too and in the past 12 months Hua Hin has been awarded the top spot in the world to retire too. With this in mind, Andrew has set about building his Sunshine

The luxury resort, with beautiful tropical gardens, will offer high quality residential and short stay holiday's that are focused on improving one’s well-being and overall quality of life while benefiting from exceptional care that is highly personalized to an individual’s needs. Unlike many care homes, Sunshine will hold registration for all three levels of care – residential, nursing and dementia care. This means their residents should never find themselves in a situation where they are unable to care for themselves should their needs change – peace of mind for everyone. Sunshine will also welcome middle-aged well people too who just would feel comfortable having a nurse on call 24 Hours. Features of the resort include private Suites that give you the sense of being independent. Each unit has a European kitchen, Living Room, Bedroom and Balcony. There is even a washing machine, all of which gives residents the feeling they are in their own home, not at a care home. Sunshine International will also have wonderful amenities including their Meeting Point Restaurant that overlooks the Royal Blue swimming pool, a pool bar so you can sit outside and socialize while enjoying a libation, a spa and hair salon as well as a library with an extensive range of books. Sunshine will also operate a shuttle bus service to take residents to and from town for a small fee.

Sunshine International is very affordable, the current promotion starts at just 29,900 baht per month and includes • 1 Thai / Foot Massage (Min stay 7 nights) • 1 Hair wash per week ( Min stay 7 nights) • 1 Pedicure per month / (Min stay 7 nights) • 1 Hair cut per month (Min stay 7 nights) • Bedding Laundry change 1 time per week • Daily Cleaning of your Suite • Nurse on Call 24 Hours per day • 2 Daily Health Checks in your suite am / pm • 1 Bedroom private suite with kitchen, living room and Balcony • Use of the Swimming pool • Use of the shuttle bus to town • (Small charge of 50 Baht to town) • WiFi and TV Channels Again, according to Andrew, “Sunshine International Hua Hin is not just a retirement home, it is mixed with the feelings of being a retirement home and a hotel. I don’t want my guests feeling they are going to an elderly home, I want them to feel special each day with the feeling they are on a lifelong holiday.” For more information you can reach them at +66 (0)95 550 9505. A Conversation with Entrepreneur & Philanthropist

Bill Heinecke

B

ill Heinecke is a business legend. Heinecke moved to Bangkok in 1963 at age 14 with his family, having previously lived in Japan, Hong Kong and Malaysia. Bill attended the International School in Bangkok but was more interested in go-karting than studying. He approached the editor of the now defunct Bangkok World asking if he could write a column on go-karts. The editor agreed on one condition, young Bill had to also sell advertising for the newspaper. He was paid a commission and within months he was making more money than the newspaper’s full-time sales staff. At the age 17 he was promoted to advertising manager of the paper. After completing high school, Bill borrowed $1,200 USD’s from a money lender and used the money to buy rags, mops and buckets. He then set about getting contracts to clean commercial office buildings in Bangkok. In 1967 he founded Minor Holdings. “Minor” being a nod to his youth. Fast forward 50 years and from that $1,200 USD’s borrowed, Bill, now a billionaire, has built MINOR International (MINT), into a global powerhouse with yearly revenue of over $1.6 Billion USD’s and a market cap of over $5.3 Billion, employing more than 64,000 people. MINT is a hotel owner, operator and investor with a portfolio of over 155 hotels and serviced suites under the Anantara, AVANI, Oaks, Tivoli, Elewana, JW Marriott, Four Seasons, St. Regis, Radisson Blu and Minor International brands in 24 countries across Asia Pacific, the Middle East, Africa, the Indian Ocean, Europe and South America. In 1980 Bill introduced pizza to Asians. Experts predicted that Asian’s would never take to the Western faire but Bill added local ingredients and quickly became Asia’s pizza king. He initially franchised for Pizza Hut but when the parent company tried to restrict his other restaurant franchise efforts Bill struck off on his own and started Pizza Company. Pizza Company quickly went on to dominate the pizza business in Thailand. An entrepreneur at heart, Bill spied a related opportunity and moved into dairy production, churning out cheese to top all those pies with an annual production of over 1,000 tons of mozzarella for his Thailand Pizza parlors alone.

Bill took out other franchises and purchased businesses growing MINT into one of Asia’s largest restaurant companies with over 2,000 outlets operating in 19 countries under The Pizza Company, Swensen’s, Sizzler, Dairy Queen, Burger King, Coffee Club, Thai Express, BreadTalk, Ribs & Rumps and Riverside brands. In addition it operates several food manufacturing facilities. Additionally, MINT is one of Thailand’s largest distributors of lifestyle brands focusing primarily on fashion and household products. With over 300 locations its brands include Gap, Banana Republic, Brooks Brothers, Esprit, Bossini, Charles & Keith, Pedro, Etam, Radley, Anello, Zwilling J.A. Henckels, Joseph Joseph and ETL Learning. MINT also operates the bemynt online shopping website and is a contract manufacturer of household products, with its own manufacturing plant. Other businesses in Bill’s empire include MJETS, Thailand’s largest jet charter provider as well as a large property development business building residential and commercial properties. In 2015 Bill was honored with the “Real Estate Personality of the Decade Award” by the editors of Property Report Magazine at their annual Thailand Property Awards gala dinner. The award was given for

being “Consistently influential and instrumental over the past decade in not only shaping Thai real estate, but also promoting Thai brands in the global arena,” Bill became a naturalized Thai citizen in 1991. In addition to being an entrepreneurial businessman he is a jet pilot & race car driver. He is also a published author having written “The Entrepreneur: 25 Golden Rules For the Global Business Manager.” Bill married his high school sweetheart Kathy in 1968 and they have two sons, John and David. According to Kathy “Bill and I feel very strongly about giving back to the people and country of Thailand who have been so good to us. Our primary charity is the Roy E. Heinecke Scholarship Fund, which was set up in the name of Bill’s father. The foundation so far has provided education to over 850 underprivileged children from nursery school to the University level” Another way Bill and Kathy give back is through their Founder’s Day program. On Bill’s birthday, June 4th, all the different divisions of the company, including international divisions make it a charity day or take on a charity project. The Heinecke’s are also well known for their yearly Anantara King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament. Now

in its sixteenth year, the festival has become one of the biggest charitable events in Southeast Asia with over US$1.5 million (BHT 50 million) raised and donated to projects that better the lives of Thailand’s wild and domesticated elephant population. Next year's King’s Cup takes place from March 8th – 11th by the banks of Bangkok’s Chao Phraya River next door to the Anantara’s Riverside Hotel. Russ Downing, Managing Director of HOT Hua Hin Property, recently had the delightful pleasure of visiting with Bill at his Bangkok penthouse to discuss his amazing life and business career and shares that conversation here. RD: Bill, I once asked your wife Kathy how you stay on top of all the businesses you have, while at the same time constantly expanding your empire? She said it was due to the many good people you have working with you. Watching you accept the Thailand Property Award’s Real Estate Personality of the Decade two years ago, your speech was all about the talent you had at Minor and recognizing their efforts, not yours. Do you feel that your ability to lead people was a God given talent or was it something you had to learn and nurture?

BH: I believe I have had an entrepreneurial spirit since a very young age, but I also believe that leaders are made not born. I like to lead by example and by making sure to always hire people smarter than me! This has grown organically through the necessity of building a number of business from scratch, at the same time. That being said, entrepreneurship is an ever-evolving passion of mine. A few years ago, I published a book called The Entrepreneur, which has since been reprinted and translated into many languages, to share some insights into the key lessons I have learnt over the years. RD: You are a man who wears many hats. Wearing your property developer hat, you’ve built luxury residential projects such as The Estates Koh Samui, The Residences at Four Seasons Chiang Mai, The Residences by Anantara Layan Phuket and The Residences at St. Regis in Bangkok. Do you have any new luxury residential developments currently underway or planned and is building things something you enjoy doing? BH: Absolutely. I’m really excited about the three new projects we are currently working on in Phuket, Bangkok and Bali. One of which is our luxury residential project called “Avadina Hills by Anantara” will be located on a 99 rai plot of land

68

HOT Magazine

adjacent to the existing Anantara Layan Phuket Resort and The Residences by Anantara, Layan. This will consist of 16 luxury villas for sale and the first phase will be ready in 2018. With a total value of over 9 billion THB these projects are an important factor in our commitment to the development of Phuket as the number one regional destination for discerning travellers. RD: You were quoted in an interview saying, “Being structured about my day, setting clear and realistic goals has definitely helped me to manage and develop the Minor Group from a small advertising agency and office cleaning company, to a public corporation that employs over 12,000 people”. That quote was obviously quite a while ago since you now employ over 64,000. Do you still feel the same way about setting goals and do you continue to do it daily? BH: Great discipline is needed to extract the most out of each day, week, weekend and month. A good routine is a sound place to start. In terms of goals, the key is to look at things in the context of a very small idea. If it works, it’s easier to expand and grow. But you must first be successful. To build a wall, you start with the first brick and then carefully add more bricks. Sometimes you can’t visualize how big a wall you are building. If I had visualized the wall that is our group today, I wouldn’t

have known where to begin. I don’t think too far ahead. I feel sometimes that if you think too far ahead then you get caught up in the planning rather than the doing. RD: It’s been reported that Warren Buffet reads five to six hours a day, everything from daily newspapers to annual reports. Is reading a significant part of your day and can you walk us thru what an average business day is like for you from start to finish? BH: I wake every day at 7am and am in the car reading the Asian Wall Street Journal and two other local newspapers by 7:45am. I feel out of the loop if I don’t know what’s going on in Thailand, Asia and the world by the time I’m at my desk each morning. I also read the Asian Financial Times and Time as well as numerous other trade publications to keep up to date about the market and any news which may impact my businesses. At work I may take up to 50 calls every day and send over 100 emails. By 7:30pm my driver will be taking me home for dinner with Kathy and I use that time to finish off any other projects. Email and using a Dictaphone have become crucial tools to ensure that everything gets seen to. I also make a point of speaking directly to each of my key executives at least once a day.

RD: You founded MJETS, a jet charter company, in the late 90’s and have grown it to be the number one Jet Charter company in the Kingdom. You currently have ten jets in your stable including two Gulfstream’s and three Cessna jets including the Citation X, the fastest non-military aircraft available. How much has having your own fleet of jets helped to fuel your company’s expansion globally and when was the last time you flew commercial? BH: Travelling on our private jets has helped shortened our executives’ much valued time and allowed more flexibility to be able to travel at a short notice or to take off at a convenient time for us. It definitely helps with our businesses which is now global. I do fly commercial at times – for example to the US or Europe. RD: You’ve been quoted as saying that the number one quality you look for in all your staff is passion. A few months back we had the pleasure of interviewing New York Times Best Selling Author Janet Attwood who wrote the Passion Test. She works with such luminaries as the Dalai Lama, Sir Richard Branson, Stephen Covey, Nobel Laureate F. W. deKlerk amongst many others. I asked her what she gleaned from spending time with them. She said that these giants had trained their minds to consistently choose in favor of the things that have the greatest meaning for them and they don’t put their attention on limiting beliefs. Because of this, they are powerful beyond measure. And by just being who they are they teach others how to be more fearless and resolute in following their dreams and passions. Firstly, did you ever have limiting beliefs and would you say “passion” is the driving force behind Minor’s success? BH: If you don’t enjoy your work, you won’t invest the time and energy needed to make it a success. I don’t know of any successful entrepreneurs who consider their work boring. Never work for just money or power, it won’t satisfy your soul. Believe in your business more than anyone else. In the early days, I was able to overcome most of my shortcomings through the sheer passion and enthusiasm I brought to my work. If you’re passionate about what you do, you’ll feel as if you never worked a day in your life! I always believe that things can get done one way or another and so I ‘drive’ my people to achieve our goals. This is one of the reasons why we have a ‘driveculture’ at Minor.

RD: Your mother Connie once told me that the way you decompress is by going on road trips, driving one of your many classic cars that you have spread around the world. How many cars do you own currently, do you have a favorite and what country is it in?

multiple homes, jets, luxury and classic cars, you also have boats, A Major Affair that’s 30 metres and A Minor Affair which is 20 metres. With your intensely busy schedule do you get to slip on your deck shoes very often and do you see any bigger purchases on the horizon?

BH: Yes, correct. I have around 33 cars in Europe and USA. My favorite is an LwB Ferrari California Spyder, 1956.

BH: Whenever I can. Over last Songkran, I was with the family sailing in the Andaman Islands.

RD: As a follow up, do you still own Clint Eastwood’s Ferrari and are there any cars that you are currently pursuing? BH: A collector will always keep one eye open for any reasonable new purchases and yes I still have Clint’s Ferrari. RD: Speaking of Connie, what values did she and your dad Roy instill in you as you were growing up that you feel helped propel you to where you are today? BH: Persistence and never giving up on my dreams and passions. RD: As any self-respecting Billionaire would, in addition to

RD: A keen advocate of corporate social responsibility, you and your family established the Roy Heinecke Foundation, supporting underprivileged children’s education in Thailand and to date have sponsored the education for thousands of students. You also have a profound interest in looking after Thailand’s national symbol the elephant. You launched the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation, and have, for the last fourteen years, put on and hosted The King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament, a charity event that has raised millions of dollars for the betterment of elephants. Why did you choose elephants as a cause and can you tell us about Founder’s Day?

BH: Having lived in Thailand for many years, Thai culture is very close to my heart, and elephants are one of the greatest enduring symbols of this beautiful country. I have a deep respect for these beautiful creatures, and through GTAEF and the Elephant Camp at Anantara Golden Triangle, we’re playing a vital role in their protection, as well as helping to create a better environment for future generations to enjoy these ‘gentle giants’. On my birthday, June 4th, my employees used to bring me gifts and flowers every year. Whilst I appreciated their kind generosity, I strongly felt they would be better spending their money to do something more useful for others. So, we came up with a policy of no birthday gifts, but all Minor Employees, from Executives to the maids, would instead need to go and do something productive to help the community. This is how Minor Founder’s Day came about. It is now known as a day of good deeds where staff from Australia to Zambia go out to help give something back to the local communities.

RD: Finally Bill, you are in a small club of individuals who have achieved remarkable things in their lifetime, which must be immensely gratifying. Looking back, over all of your years, what would you say has been your happiest day and what made it so? BH: My happiest day is probably yet to come but every day is a happy day for me doing the work that I love and am passionate about. My happiest moments are those spent with the family, and knowing that we have had so much quality time together. Time is a luxury one can’t get back so it needs to be spent wisely. True happiness doesn’t come from getting everything you want, but from being content with what you have. Thank you Bill
