Boys in the Band actor on reviving the gay classic, his personal takeaway and playing bitchy queens

A lot has happened this year, and that's aside from Jim Parsons dancing around in a bra. That bit, of course, graced screens across the world thanks to Net lix's Hollywood, the Big Bang Theory actor shedding his well-established onscreen TV persona to play a sleazy Hollywood agent in the lashy revisionist drama. The Ryan Murphy series garnered him an Emmy nomination, but best of all: It wouldn't be the only time in 2020 that Parsons would be taking on the role of a bitchy queen. In Net lix's The Boys in the Band, again produced by Murphy, Parsons is a standout among standouts in the remake of the pioneering 1970 gaycentric drama, directed by William

For me, the main magical thing about Boys in the Band comes from the fact It's interesting to me to think that the that Mart was inally able to ilm, when it was released in 1970, before reveal himself and his situation and the people the lexicon of LGBTQ identities expanded, that he knew and loved with so much brutal resonated with an especially niche group honesty. But no, de initely, it was one of the most profound things about going through this process, and I'm not even speaking about whether or not this is re lected in the inal product on ilm. I'm really talking about my own personal experience of working on this: I feel we have the luxury now of not needing for safety and for personal comfort to be surrounded by your tribe of gay men. Many people have plenty of gay friends, and so many people solely, but it's not for the same reasons in my opinion that it would've been in the late '60s, early '70s where I recognize that, with my very good it was like, “Truly, we have to stick together.” friends especially, there's a language that That's wonderful. And there is still a part of me that, as a gay person, I see more clearly having played Michael for so long. The Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus Is All In For 2020 By Stephen Gaskill

In just a short while, if all

goes as we hope, Joe Biden will be the President-elect of the United States. It will be a major dose of good news in a year filled with anxiety and surprise. “Anxiety and surprise” could be the motto for Florida Democrats. While we picked up some impressive wins in the 2018 election, we were still at sea when the blue wave washed over the rest of the country. Nevertheless, as the saying goes, we persisted.

Florida’s LGBTQ Democrats have been actively engaged in this election. The Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus is a critical part of the political infrastructure. Our 21 chapters from Miami to Pensacola have been organizing in local communities, phone banking for our endorsed candidates, raising money, and engaging with voters and candidates across the state. Many of our members are candidates on the ballot right now, and are the leading candidates in races

for local offices and the State Legislature. The Caucus has been active in Florida politics in our current iteration since 2004. Growing out of what was then called the Triangle Caucus, we rebranded as the Florida GLBT Democratic Caucus. We spent a few years as the Florida LGBT Democratic Caucus until our membership voted last year to rebrand once again as the Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus to better represent the breadth of our community. Our mission is simple: to elect candidates who support the LGBTQ+ community, and who promote policies that advance equality. We’re fortunate

photos by jr davis

to have champions in the Florida congressional delegation; the entire 13-member delegation fights for our community, and Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Rep. Ted Deutch, and Rep. Kathy Castor bend over backwards for us when we ask. Our municipal champions are just as impressive, such as Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis, who is a former president of our Broward County chapter, the Dolphin Democrats, and Tampa Mayor Jane Castor, who was elected with a huge assist from the Hillsborough County LGBTA Democratic Caucus. And of course we are well represented by our members in Tallahassee, Rep. Carlos Guillermo Smith and Rep. Jennifer Webb, the first open lesbian in the Florida House. They’ll be joined in the next session by Rep.-elect Michele Rayner, the first Black open lesbian. Their colleague and our good

friend Rep. Shevrin Jones will soon make history as Senator Jones, the first openly gay State Senator in Florida. The Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus is all in this year for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Our LGBTQ Democratic Vote Center, located at 2365 Wilton Drive, is strategically located in the heart of South Florida’s LGBTQ community. We’ve conducted events there, hosted members of Congress and other elected officials, and provided hundreds of voters with materials and information about our candidates. That’s the grassroots work that our local chapters excel in, and that’s how we help our candidates get elected. While each of our 21 chapters develops their own plans and strategies for GOTV (Get Out The Vote), the Caucus provides key connections to the Florida Democratic Party and the Coordinated Campaign. (The Coordinated Campaign is just that — an organizing structure to ensure campaigns from the national level on down are working in sync.) This cycle the Caucus is also running digital ads in support of several of our endorsed candidates. You’ve probably seen those on Facebook and Google.

“Florida’s LGBTQ Democrats have been actively engaged in this election. The Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus is a critical part of the political infrastructure.”

And this cycle, for the first time, we’ve partnered in a larger and more visible way with other state and national LGBTQ groups. The Caucus, in conjunction with Equality Florida, SAVE and HRC, conducted a National Coming Out Days of Action Weekend for our endorsed candidates. Our members, many of whom are also members of those other organizations, phone banked and canvassed throughout the weekend to raise visibility, gain support, and turn out the vote. We’re also very active when we’re not in election season. Twice a year the Caucus hosts a statewide conference that brings together LGBTQ activists, elected officials and candidates, key issue experts, and others to identify action steps to advance equality and elect Democrats. Our Winter Conference in March, just before the pandemic shut down the state, featured Dr. Jill Biden, Rep. Val Demings, and actress and activist Cynthia Nixon, who was a surrogate for Bernie Sanders. That conference was held in Orlando, to highlight our new Orange

County chapter, the Rainbow Democrats. The Dolphin Democrats in Broward hosted our 2020 Summer Conference in Fort Lauderdale, which became our first-ever virtual conference due to the pandemic. We broadcast out of the studios of Hotspots Media Group, our media sponsor, with a four-hour event featuring panel discussions and presentations, and speakers such as Reps. Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Ted Deutch; Mayors Dean Trantalis and Jane Castor; Florida Democratic Party chair Terrie Rizzo; Florida’s LGBTQ legislative candidates; our Democratic Congressional challengers; and our national keynote speaker, former presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg. The conference video is posted on our website and on our Facebook page. The Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus is known around the state and in Washington as an effective, vocal and visible advocate for our community and our party. We hold our elected officials and candidates accountable for their votes and their words. We are a professionally-run organization with a stellar reputation for spending the time and putting in the work. We’re all volunteers, so our commitment is real. This year, our goal is to avoid anxiety and surprise on November 3. Stephen Gaskill is President of the Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus. The Caucus has 21 local chapters from Miami to Pensacola. By Chaplain George Freeman georgefreeman.com

The Catholic Church continues to be an age-old example of high drag (grown men with “Dorothy’s red shoes”). Catholic priests and even some of the orthodox offshoot’s clerics have gowns that would make any queen jealous. In the 14th century, the worshippers drank wine in a week-long Carnival festival. Drag queens nowadays and Catholics alike love to do a number called ‘Gloria’. It is too bad that the gay community and the Church are so at odds, given their long history. Many accounts of

Catholic Carnival parties in the 14th century conveniently omit mention of same-sex love between priests. And let’s not forget the abuse of young boys by priests throughout the 20th and 21st centuries – thousands of stories more horrifying and salacious than those derived from any gay bar backrooms during the 70s and 80s. Despite this storied history, the official position of the Roman Catholic Church is still that homosexual relationships are condemnable, and that homosexual

behavior itself is deviant. Pope Francis seems intent on making a change. He has long taken a softer stance on same-sex relationships than his past colleagues. In a new interview for the documentary ‘Francesco’, Pope Francis voiced support for same-sex civil unions. This is the first time any sitting Pope has done this (Pope Francis had previously endorsed samesex civil unions when he was Archbishop of Buenos Aires). Gay rights have made leaps and bounds in parts of the world over the last 50 years, but many countries

still criminalize gayness. Catholics make up over 15% of Earth’s population, so the Pope’s words have the potential to enact a good deal of change in our ever-changing world. He has not voiced support for same-sex marriage, perhaps a too radical idea for all 1.2 billion Catholics. Still, his words represent a softening in the church’s highest office. What would Jesus say about this? Well, Jesus did say something… but rarely does the church acknowledge that in Matthew, Jesus was chastising the Pharisees in their treatment of eunuchs (intersex or castrated folk and first century sissy-boys) by saying that “For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother’s womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it” (Matthew 19:12 KJV). Basically, Jesus’ friend Matthew is telling us and the world that all of these people are still children of God, and – aside from those who “were made eunuchs of men” – are “Born This Way”, as Lady Gaga would say. This writer believes that most mammals are tribal, and many are bisexual, gay, and heterosexual. Yet, all statistics show that the bisexuals are the largest profile in human sexuality. Jesus never preached damnation, nor did the Catholic Church. They took a hundred years in the closet to hide the fact that the relationship between Johnathan and David was a love affair: “…the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David…” on their first meeting (1 Sam 18:1, KJV). Not to mention the Sapphic love of Ruth and Naomi: Ruth tells Naomi, “…where you go, I will go, and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God, my God. Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried…” (Ruth 1:16-17). We dare not mention Cain and Abel, who either mated with their mother, Eve, or a sister. While we’re on the issue of incest, the church needs to stop the centuries of false teaching that the men of Sodom and

Gomorrah wanted to have sex with angels. The verses clearly distinguish that the men of the cities wanted to meet the angels (“bring them unto us, that we may know them” (GEN 19:5 KJV)), but Lot, supposedly interpreting that they wanted to have sex with angels, offered his two daughters. It seems a little odd to this writer that one would offer his daughters to a bunch of gay sodomites. The story goes on after Lot left Sodom and Gomorrah with his wife and two daughters. His dear wife disobeyed God by turning around, and God turned her into a pillar of salt. That night, the HOOOOLY bible gives the true meaning of Sodom and Gomorrah. Lot got drunk, his daughters got drunk, and daddy had sex with the oldest daughter. The next night, the older daughter told her younger sister it was good, and she needed to “do” daddy. Daddy seeded them both. Clearly, the writer of this story celebrates incest. It is the defining point and purpose of the story. Incest because there were no other people? Or incest because the girls were horny? You decide. All these years later, the Pope caught on to the power of love and acceptance that Jesus preached. In the ‘Francesco’ interview, he said “homosexual people have the right to be in a family. They are children of God. You can’t kick someone out of a family, nor make their life miserable for this.” Rupaul Charles, of Rupaul’s Drag Race fame, says, “as gay people, we get to choose our family,” because so families elbow their gay members out in one way or another. Hopefully, Pope Francis’ words represent a cultural shift toward acceptance that eases the burden of finding family for gay generations to come.

Open Enrollment at Healthcare.gov November 1 – December 15, 2020 It is Open Enrollment time on Healthcare.gov November 1 – December 15, 2020. You can enroll by yourself; however, at no cost to you there are licensed agents trained to work through the confusing maze of insurance and save you money. Know your needs irst then review the plans offered. 'Doctor visits, medications, potential procedures, deductibles, etc'. There are three categories of providers available through the Marketplace (Healthcare.gov) HMO – Health Maintenance Organization = managed care with referrals required.

EPO – Exclusive Provider Organization = you must use the doctors within the EPO network. Out of network costs are not covered.

PPO – Preferred Provider Organization – just like HMO and EPO the plan offers a larger network of providers who are participating without the need for a referral.

The higher the deductible the lower the premium. Look carefully at what is covered. Always review the Summary of Bene its, this document will detail what is covered, and when, what will be your prescription cost, etc. Understanding this will assist you in making a choice that works best for you. When choosing a plan con irm that your

preferred providers are in the plan; or, decide if you are willing to change. For 2020 the maximum Out of Pocket amount has been increased to $8,550 single; or, $17,100 family. This is the most you will pay for healthcare for the year. Each year, the participating companies determine deductible amounts as part of their risk management structure. The participating companies are required to provide clear and consistent levels of care across all plans. If you are taking medication for which the manufacturer offers assistance; then, always use their program. Remember the amount of assistance provided will count toward your deductible. Plan prescription re ills to maximize the use of manufacturer assistance to cover your annual deductible. For example, Victoza, will carry a cost of approximately $2,400 – the manufacturer assistance program will cover all but $25. The difference of $2,375 counts toward your annual deductible. Work with your agent to get the right plan for you within your budget. For those blessed to have earned Medicare, contact your agent to review the many options available to you. Equality Florida Broward Gala Goes Virtual November 7

Equality Florida will present The Voice for Equality Award to Chasten Buttigieg at the organization's 18th Annual Equality Florida VIRTUAL Broward Celebration on Saturday, November 7th. Equality Florida, the state's largest LGBTQ rights organization, each year bestows its highest honor, The Voice For Equality award, on a person who has stood up, spoken out, and devoted themselves to increasing public understanding of LGBTQ issues, moving us forward towards full equality. Recent past recipients include Congressman Ted Deutch, Greg Louganis, Nikki Fried, Jim Obergefell, and Jazz Jennings. Chasten irst gained national attention and won the hearts of millions as the husband of Mayor Pete during his historic run for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2019. In 2020, Chasten took center stage, releasing his memoir, “I Have Something To Tell You,” in which he fearlessly lifts the curtain on his life growing up in the midwest: from being bullied and rejected by family, experiencing

homelessness and sexual assault, to inding professional and relationship ful illment. For living his life authentically on the national stage and for speaking openly about the challenges he faced, that sadly continue to face too many Americans who dare to be different, Chasten Buttigieg has reduced stigma and shown us that, with self-acceptance and love, anything is possible “It was a huge political breakthrough for an out gay man to run for president as a major party candidate,” said Equality Florida CEO, Nadine Smith, about the historic campaign of Pete Buttigieg. “And it was an equally tremendous cultural breakthrough for Chasten to stand beside his husband every step of the way, supportive, authentic, and a force for change in his own right. For countless Americans, Chasten and Pete brought a new level of visibility and honesty to our community that was real, and raw, and relatable. We are thrilled to shine a spotlight on Chasten, and hope it will inspire others to live their lives out and proud - and for parents to always love all their kids exactly the way

they are.” Chasten stated, “I'm still a little overwhelmed to be receiving such an honor, for being myself and living my truth. Still, I am proud of what we've done--how far we've come, if it helps even one young LGBTQ person to live without fear of rejection and to realize their dreams. At the same time, I know how much Equality Florida, which is very much the vanguard of LGBTQ equality work - has contributed to that process. The Legacy For Equality Award (posthumous) will go to Wilton Manors Mayor Justin Flippen. Justin was a dedicated public servant and a trailblazer, living out and proud for the whole of his adult and public life. Justin has many irsts to his credit - as out gay university student body president, the irst out gay candidate for Florida State Representative, and as Mayor of the irst all LGBT Commission in Wilton Manors in 2018. Sadly, Justin died suddenly of a brain aneurism in February while on his way to a commission meeting. Justin inspired generations of young people to dream big, to serve, and to live their lives authentically.

Miami Book Fair Goes Virtual November 15-22

For the irst time in 37 years, Miami Dade College (MDC) will transform its iconic Miami Book Fair (MBF), a weeklong celebration of books and writers in downtown Miami, into a free virtual event from Nov. 15-22. The virtual Fair is the continuation of a proactive effort to remain socially engaged, even as we practice physical distancing, per local and state guidelines. Since the onset of the pandemic, the Fair has remained connected to the world through a stream of interactive online events that include conversations with authors, the annual Miami Writers Institute; The Little Haiti Book Festival; and a Speak Up: Teen Creative Writing workshops, among others. “Transforming an event that has been exclusively in person for more than a generation has indeed been challenging, but the opportunity for growth through digital delivery of programs is also motivating for us,” said Lissette Mendez, MBF's Programs Director. “Over 37 years, we have built a Miami Book Fair that represents diversity of subject matter, diversity of presenting authors and diversity of fairgoers. We have built a program that introduces more than 20,000 children each year to books and writers, instilling in each of them a love for reading that will support their educational pursuits. Our mission is to engage our community through inclusive, accessible, programs that promote reading and support writers. Though we will be online, we will still be the Miami Book Fair, and we look forward to gathering in person, once again, when the conditions allow.” This year's growing list of more than 200 authors and moderators includes headliner Canadian poet, novelist, literary critic, essayist,

teacher, environmental activist, and inventor Margaret Atwood (“Dearly: New Poems,” “The Handmaid's Tale,” “The Testaments”). As in years past, the Fair will feature programs in English, Spanish and Haitian Creole representing iction, politics, history, memoir, comics, poetry, among other genres, as well as an extensive program for children and teens. Signature programs, such as “Evenings With…” and the IberoAmerican and ReadCaribbean programs will return, and even the beloved Children's Alley, dedicated to providing fun, learning activities for children, will have a digital home. In addition, the Fair will prominently showcase Florida authors. The virtual Book Fair Marketplace will feature booksellers and other vendors, in place of the popular Street Fair weekend. And of course, you can order a copy of this year's commemorative poster created by award winning children's book author, illustrator, and creator of Disney's animated series, The Replacements, Dan Santat. A free and simple registration is all that will be required, and users will receive email noti ications about programs and activities as they become available, plus practical tips on how to navigate the website, create a watch list, and more. All MBF programs will be available on a schedule to be published prior to the start of the Fair. Although the Fair site will not be fully operational until programs are complete and ready for viewing, the registrations page is open. Audiences can sign up to get updates and program drop schedules at miamibookfaironline.com. For more information or to become a Friend of the Fair, a fundraising membership program, please visit www.miamibookfair.com or email wbookfair@mdc.edu.

I love giving back when it counts!
