Richard Gray Retires Exclusive Hotspots Interview By Scott Holland As most of you have heard by now, Richard Gray, Senior Vice President, Inclusion & Accessibility of Visit Lauderdale is retiring after many years promoting Gay Fort Lauderdale to the world. Richard and I have been friends for over 20 years, so it was a pleasure to sit down with him for this exclusive Hotspots interview just over a month before he retires. What made you move from England to Fort Lauderdale? I worked for a UK Investment Bank in London and in 1983 they transferred me to our New York Office. It was a very exciting time in my life experiencing all that the Big Apple had to offer, even though it was during the heart of the AIDS crisis. In 1991 I retired from banking and decided to move to Fort Lauderdale, a destination I had developed a strong attachment to. I wanted to be a part of the hospitality industry and to use my skill set to make ripples. How did the “Royal Palms” come about and how did you make it the guesthouse that everyone wanted to stay at? 26 | HotspotsMagazine.com

I created and opened The Royal Palms in October of 1991. My vision was to create a luxury safe haven for gay travelers. I wanted to elevate the standards of gay accommodations around the world.......and I did. Within a short period of opening, Out & About, the gay travel experts rated the Royal Palms as one of the Top gay accommodations in the USA. We focused on outstanding customer service, attention to detail and of course luxury accommodations. I wanted to be the Four Seasons of the gay world. Guests loved our grounds, and we were famous for having a dendrobium orchid bloom in the toilet bowl. What made you fall in love with Fort Lauderdale and how did you become the spokesperson for Gay Fort Lauderdale? I fell in love with Fort Lauderdale in the late 1970's when I came here a few times from London for a holiday. I loved the beaches, the intercoastal waterway, the palm trees, of course the weather and there was something inside me that said I wanted to live there. It was a bit rinky-dink then and I am so proud that I have been a part of the evolution to

turn this destination into a world class mecca. In 1993 I received the City of Fort Lauderdale Beautification Award. It was that Award that motivated me to reach out to the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau, now Visit Lauderdale, to discuss marketing the destination to lesbian and gay travelers. Greater Fort Lauderdale historically had a strong gay community, and I wanted to educate travelers that Greater Fort Lauderdale was an emerging destination for all travelers. I started to work with their marketing team and quickly became their gay liaison and go to person when it came to gay tourism. Little did they all know the amazing journey we were going to go on and become the LGBTQ+ capital of Florida, one of the Top LGBTQ+ destinations in the USA as well as the global LGBTQ+ tourism thought leader. I never imagined I would be called a pioneer or a trail blazer. All of my vision fell into place organically and naturally and I always felt it was the right thing to do. What are your favorite spots that you love in Fort Lauderdale and why? I just love the beach. I live next to the beach and love running along A1A. This stimulates my mind, and it is running along A1A where I come up with all of my out-of-the-box marketing strategies. My other jewel is Fort Lauderdale's hidden gem, Birch Park. I love it there. I feel like I am in the countryside and not in Fort Lauderdale. Visit Lauderdale has had so many amazing advertising campaigns. Is there one that is your favorite? Our first campaign in 1996, called Immerse Yourself was historic. We became one of the

very first destinations to market to the lesbian and gay traveler. All of our campaigns are great but it is the Immerse Yourself campaign where this destination found gold at the end of the rainbow and became an LGBTQ+ mecca. In your role as Senior Vice President of Inclusion & Accessibility of Visit Lauderdale what are some of your proudest moments? Recognition from the United Nations about our historic Transgender marketing campaign. They wrote a case study on our campaign and its success. This was the first time the United Nations

welcoming spaces, and actively support LGBTQ+ initiatives to ensure that all travelers feel respected, accepted and valued. What do you think are the biggest challenges facing the LGBTQ+ community today, especially after the recent elections, and what advice do you have for your peers on what they can do to help address these issues? The biggest challenges facing the LGBTQ+ community today include increased discrimination, legal setbacks, and social stigma fueled by political rhetoric; my advice to my peers is to stay informed, engage in advocacy, support inclusive policies, and create a safe had even mentioned Transgender. We became the first destination in the world to welcome Transgender travelers. This was pre-Caitlyn Jenner and on reflection I know it was the right thing to do but it was a courageous move that certainly caused a few ripples. Being recognized by OUT Magazine as an OUT 100, one of the 100 most influential LGBTQ+ people in the USA was a truly special feeling. Most recently we became the first destination in the USA to create a video targeted at blind and vision impaired travelers. I am exceptionally proud of that video. I had been wanting to film a blind traveler video, but we were not ready until now. All my marketing strategies have brought over $15 billion in revenue into the Broward County economy. That confirms the economic importance of the LGBTQ+ platform along with allies. www.visitlauderdale.com/accessibility What would you like to see the travel industry do better to elevate the LGBTQ+ community? I would like to see the travel industry prioritize inclusive marketing, create safe and 28 | HotspotsMagazine.com

space for open dialogue to foster understanding and solidarity. Be visible. Do not be invisible. How do you feel about your career? I am so proud of my 33-year journey. It has been a great ride, and I have had some tremendous support from this amazing community here in Broward County. The County's success along with my own would not have been possible without their belief, respect and support. I have to say from the bottom of my heart a great BIG thank you to my community! Describe yourself in 3 words? Visionary determined and compassionate. What do you do for fun? I love to run along A1A and enjoy the nature of Birch Park. Birch Park is my sanctuary. Of course, I love popping into Hunter's Nightclub in Wilton Manors and have a cocktail or two with my dear friend Mark Hunter. Now that you are retiring, what are your plans for the future? I will be going home to England for a few months to spend quality time with my family

and then plan on taking a few Celebrity cruises. For more information on Richard, you can follow him on Facebook.com/RichardGray

TESTOSTERONE The Superhero Hormone By Leo Harley

TESTOSTERONE- Just saying the word might make you feel stronger. But what is this mysterious molecule that everyone’s buzzing about? So far, we have talked about

How Testosterone Works: Imagine testosterone as a messenger delivering instructions across your body. It’s the ultimate multitasker, responsible for a series of essential functions. Here’s a quick tour of its greatest hits:

be a thing if it wasn’t for testosterone. Now we dive into it with a splash of science, myths 1. Building Muscle and Bone: and facts, and a whole lot of Test. Ever wonder how bodybuilders sculpt those biceps? Testosterone is the MVP, What Does Testosterone Actually Do? Testosterone, “T” or “Test” for short, is the boosting protein synthesis and keeping bones dense. Without it, even Hulk might hormone you probably associate with shrink back to Bruce Banner proportions. muscle, masculinity, and chest-thumping dominance. But don’t box it in! Testosterone is way more than a macho molecule. It is a steroid hormone that both men and women produce—yes, women too! Men primarily pump it out from their testicles, while women rely on their ovaries and adrenal glands for their dose. In men, Test runs the show, responsible for deeper voices, facial hair, and strong muscles. In women, it plays a supportive but essential role in mood, energy, and even libido.

82 | HotspotsMagazine.com

2. Driving Libido: loins. It’s the hormone behind those morning woods and late-night texts. Known as the “lusty hormone,” testosterone plays a starring role in your romantic urges. 3. Regulating Mood: Feeling bold one moment and grumpy the over mood regulation, acting as a mood

enhancer. A healthy level of Test makes you feel like conquering the day. Too low, and you might get you in a funk. It’s a hormonal rollercoaster if not in balance. 4. Promoting Hair Growth (or Loss): Got a glorious beard or a shiny scalp? Either way, thank testosterone. It’s responsible for sprouting hair in adolescence, and sometimes for its departure later in life. 5. Fueling Competition: From ancient gladiators to an average modern gamer, testosterone might explain the relentless drive to conquer. It’s the ultimate hormone for turning casual challenges into epic battles. 6. Brain Power: It even affects focus and memory. Who knew your mental edge might be linked to your testosterone levels? Now you know. What Does Testosterone Actually Don’t? (Time to bust some myths): 1. “More Testosterone = Aggression” assertiveness, it’s not a direct ticket to rage mode. Studies show it’s more about unprovoked aggression. 2. “Only Men Have Testosterone” Surprise! Women produce testosterone too—just in smaller doses. Without it, energy levels and muscle strength would plummet, and libido would take a nosedive. 3. “Testosterone Peaks Forever” Sorry to break it to you, but testosterone levels peak in your 20s and then start their slow descent. By your 40s or 50s, you might notice some subtle changes—but fear not, it’s all part of the journey. Sometimes, the T levels drop—naturally with age or because of lifestyle factors like stress, poor diet, or lack of sleep. Symptoms of low testosterone (aka “Low T”) can include: Fatigue Low libido Muscle weakness

Brain fog

If this sounds like you, don’t panic! Consult your doctor and remember that simple lifestyle tweaks can often work wonders.

Boosting Testosterone the Fun Way Want to give your testosterone levels a natural nudge? Here are some easy (and fun!) lifestyle tweaks you can add to your routine: 1.

2. 3. 4.

Lift Heavy Things: Strength training is a natural testosterone booster. Bonus: you’ll feel like a superhero every time you rack those weights, and the pump that comes from it is very stimulating. Get Your Zzz’s: Sleep is when your body recharges, including hormone production. Feed Your T: Foods rich in zinc (like oysters) and healthy fats (like avocados) are your testosterone’s best friends. Cut Stress: body with cortisol, which can tank your testosterone. Find ways to unwind Meditate, go dancing, or just take a long walk, and your hormones will thank you.

It’s All About Balance Testosterone isn’t about turning you into an alpha beast or a gym legend. It’s about balance, health, and feeling your best self. Whether you’re boosting your levels naturally or just marveling at how this tiny molecule does so much, testosterone deserves a round of applause. And talking about applause here’s a quirky suggests this “digit ratio” might be linked to your prenatal testosterone exposure. A swimming in T before you were even born! So now that you’re familiar with what “Test” can do, are you ready to embrace your inner superhero? Cut out the stress, go lift those weights, and channel your T-powered energy into greatness!
