Black History Month in Wilton Manors

This Black History Month, like the past three before it, we at HOTspots Happening Out will celebrate the occasion with our annual *Cookout. It’s a joyous affair with free entry, free food, a kid’s zone, cash prize games (Spades and Domino), and music – just to name a few great aspects of the celebration.

But there’s more! For this Black History Month, like others in the past, we have built a lineup of events that speak to the excellence that is Black led programming and ownership.

Take our *Eligible Bachelors Singles Mixer for example. The cruising (for love or…) mixer stems from my five-year-old Black Love series; that’s Black programming. And the venue for the mixer is at South Florida’s only Black LGBTQ+ owned and operated bar in Wilton Manors, Chocolate City; that’s Black ownership.

The same goes for our *Open Mic Night, Black programming and ownership. Yours truly again and Chocolate City is back as the Open Mic Night venue and curator. Then there’s our first ever *Fashion meets Art, a runway show of artistic clothing. All designed, created, and model by Black Excellence during our February Art Walk Wilton Manors event. That’s four amazing events in Wilton Manors during Black History Month created and executed by and for the Black community, and our allies.

But is it enough? Or better yet, is it worth it? Or how about, does it even mean much at all? No place is perfect, especially when it comes to racism since the pandemic of ill will has invaded every corner of the earth for centuries upon centuries. However, it is worth mentioning on this Black History Month (and every month till change happens) that Wilton Manors erodes the good of blackness that exist within the city, whether it’s us Black and Brown folks who live here or those of us that visit for work or play.

And no, when I refer to the City of Wilton Manors, to be clear I’m not referring to the City’s staff or commission but rather the general atmosphere that looms over the city as it relates to those who live, work and play here. For too long with too many incidences, the Black community has been treated poorly with racists misgivings by people in the city. If you think I’m exaggerating, then just listen up. Remove your blinders and open your mind to understanding and enlightenment.

Wilton Manors is filled with survivors, a term dedicated (not solely) to Black and Brown individuals who have been racial attacked whether verbally or worse. Yes, they are survivors because one can only imagine what it feels like to be treated less

Many of the Wilton Manors’ survivors, I’m confident in saying all of them that I know personally, frequent the Island City still even with little to no change since they encountered such hate. In fact, many are pillars of our community. One incident occurred most recent, just the past month in December. The courageous, daring, unapologetic Queen LaTonya Hopson was called the horrific n-word while frequenting one of our local pizza joints. This is a strong Black Woman who develops programming for our entire community both LGBTQ+ and BIPOC.

So, I ask again, is it worth it? Or how about, does it even mean much at all? How can we change the unyielding tide of hate that flows through our beloved Island City? The enduring Hopson has taken steps to help dissipate the high tide with a gathering of the minds to put a plan in action that includes city officials, concern community members, media personnel, and community leaders. But these steps have been taken before. HOTspots took on the challenge years prior with town halls and appeals to the city advocating for change.

And thus, I ask again, is it worth it? Or how about, does it even mean much at all? My answer is yes, it’s worth it and it does mean something because we as a community are determined to get it right.

So I pose a better question, how can we all do our part in order to get it right? Other than being a kind person rid of hatred (I digress), be supportive of Black programming and ownership in this town. You can start here with our Black History Month lineup of events. Be committed to coming out and celebrating what is Black Excellence in the Island City.

Florida Rubber Weekend is an annual gathering of rubber lovers, and this year is February 13-16. This event started as a contest in a bar in 2009 and is now a weekend full of events in the Fort Lauderdale area. Each year, we support the winner of the Florida Rubber title in their journey to compete on the international stage by sponsoring their travel and attendance at Mr. International Rubber (MIR). At MIR contestants and thousands of visitors from around the world gather in Chicago, IL to compete for the title of MIR.

Florida Rubber, Inc. was formed as a non-profit to support and promote the rubber community and to raise awareness and educate people within the state of Florida and elsewhere about the rubber community and rubber lifestyle. In 2022, Florida won the International title when Pusckatt Pumera Onyx claimed victory. In 2024, our contest was opened up to everyone allowing the winner of the Florida Rubber contest to choose their title as Mr. Ms. Mx. or Florida Rubber Ambassador. And we’re thrilled that in our first year with a more inclusive contest, we named our first non-binary winner, Mx. Pup Aspen who went

on to represent Florida at the International contest this past October.

Florida Rubber Weekend is open to EVERYONE – They welcome their members, their friends, allies, supporters, and anyone who’s willing to embrace us regardless of race, gender expression, sexuality, age, or other demographics. While their purpose focuses on the rubber community, they welcome and support everyone and aim to create a safe, inclusive space during our event.

fitness Kiki with Group exercise classes

If your solo gym routine feels like a chore or you’re unsure where to start your fitness journey, it might be time to shake things up with group exercise classes or sports. It’s like having a Kiki while getting fit, these lively options not only help you get fit but also keep things fresh, social, and fun. Whether you’re a total beginner working on your New Year’s resolution or seasoned gym-rat who just needs a new approach, there’s a class or sport for everyone.

Let’s dive into some group fitness options, and see what resonates most with your style:

Pilates: Strength and Stability

Pilates focuses on core strength, flexibility, and posture through low-impact movements. It’s ideal for beginners

because it’s gentle yet effective. Whether you’re recovering from an injury or looking to tone your abs, Pilates builds a strong foundation for overall fitness. Bonus: improved posture and reduced back pain!

Yoga: Flex Your Zen

Yoga combines physical poses, breathing exercises, and mindfulness to strengthen your body and calm your mind. From gentle Hatha yoga to intense Vinyasa flow, there’s a style for every fitness level. Beyond improving flexibility and balance, yoga is a great way to reduce stress and enhance mental clarity. I personally used to think of yoga as challenging but once I gave it a chance, I got hooked! It has really made a difference not only to my fitness, but my life in general.

Swimming: Dive Into Fitness

Swimming is a full-body workout that’s easy on the joints, making it perfect for beginners or those with injuries. Whether you’re doing laps or water aerobics, it builds cardiovascular endurance, tones muscles, and burns calories. Plus, who doesn’t love the refreshing feeling of being in water?

Zumba: Dance Like Nobody’s Watching Zumba combines Latin-inspired dance moves with heart-pumping music for an exhilarating cardio workout. It’s less about nailing the choreography and more about having fun while you sweat. Perfect for beginners and everyone who likes music and dancing, Zumba is a great way to torch calories and boost your mood. It’s so much fun that seems like a 60 min class isn’t enough. 1 hour of Zumba makes me sweat more and burn more calories than 90 mins on a treadmill.

Spinning: Pedal Your Way to Fitness

Indoor cycling, or spinning, offers an intense cardio workout in a motivating group setting. With upbeat music and an instructor guiding you through climbs and sprints, makes for more than a fitness class, it becomes a whole experience, where you’ll build endurance and leg strength which is great to grow those buns. It can seem challenging, but most spin classes let you control the resistance, so you can adjust the intensity to your fitness level.

Boxing: Punch Up Your Routine

Boxing classes aren’t just for fighters. They combine cardio, strength, and agility training in one session. Whether you’re hitting a heavy bag or shadowboxing, this high-energy workout is fantastic for stress relief, improving coordination, and building muscle tone. Plus, learning self-defense skills is always a bonus! Ain’t nobody gonna mess with ya.

Circuit Training: A Little Bit of Everything

Circuit classes are the perfect mix of strength, cardio, and endurance exercises. You’ll rotate through various stations - think push-ups, jumping jacks, squats, and kettlebell swings - spending a set amount of time at each before moving to the next. Circuit training is great for beginners because you can go at your own pace, but it’s also a favorite among fitness buffs for its calorie-torching intensity. Expect to see

improvements in strength, stamina, and overall fitness in no time.

Team Sports: Play and Socialize

If you prefer camaraderie over choreography, consider joining a recreational sports league. Soccer, basketball, volleyball, pickleball, or softball offer a chance to stay active while having fun with others. Team sports improve coordination, build teamwork skills, and provide a competitive edge to keep you motivated.

Benefits of Group Exercise and Sports

Here’s why you should consider adopting group exercise classes for your training:

Motivation: Exercising in a group setting pushes you to give your best effort. The energy in the room (or on the court) is contagious!

Variety: From calming yoga to high-energy pickleball matches, there’s always something new to try.

Accountability: Knowing others are counting on you makes it harder to skip your workout.

Community: Group classes and sports foster connections and friendships, turning exercise into a social experience.

Guidance: Instructors or coaches ensure you’re performing exercises safely and effectively.

Finding the Right Fit

If you’re new to fitness, start with beginner-friendly classes like yoga, Pilates, Zumba, or water aerobics. If you’re looking for something social, try pickleball or team sports. For a challenge, explore spinning, circuit training, or boxing. Many gyms, recreation centers, and parks offer trial sessions or drop-in classes, so don’t be afraid to experiment until you find the perfect fit.

Group exercise and sports aren’t just about getting fit - they’re about finding joy in movement and connecting with others. So, grab your mat, lace up your sneakers, or pick up a paddle. Whatever you choose, remember to sweat, smile, and repeat!

the Captivating LGBTQ Film by Director Mark Schwab Fernando Shines in Exteriors,

The Stars are Bright, Fernando

Fernando grew up with dreams of making a difference. While he first aspired to become the U.S. president, his realization that this dream wasn’t possible due to his being born in Costa Rica led him to pursue a different path of influence: acting. After graduating high school, Fernando made his way to Los Angeles, where he quickly landed a role on Disney Channel’s Disney 365. It was a “dream come true” that shaped his career and life. Now, Fernando takes center stage in Exteriors, an LGBTQ

film by director Mark Schwab that weaves together three interconnected stories of modern gay relationships. The film premieres in March on GayBingeTV. Fernando explains more from his Los Angeles home.

You’re best known from your time on Disney Channel’s Disney 365. Is it true it almost didn’t happen?

Yes! The morning of my big audition, the power went out in my building and the gate

of my garage wouldn’t open! I was panicking: sweating bullets, crying. This was the biggest audition of my life, and I couldn’t get out of my building! Thankfully the casting director was so patient and understanding. I finally got to the audition, an hour late. I left thinking I would never hear from them but I got a callback that I completely flubbed because I was a ball of nerves. I left the callback thinking, not a chance in hell, but three days later I got the call telling me I booked it! Did Disney 365 help shape your journey as an actor?

The lessons I learned from that time have shaped everything I do in and out of acting.

What does a typical day in your life look like now?

I don’t think there’s such a thing as a typical day for an artist. For that reason, I strive to stick to my self-care regimens religiously. First thing every morning, I stretch for thirty minutes to an hour and then hit the gym. Whatever happens from that point on in the day is that day’s adventure.

What initially attracted you to the role of Kenny, and in what ways do you relate to

Amazing! It’s rare to be given the chance to step back into a role, and I felt lucky to do so. Especially with Mark (Schwab, the film’s

Exteriors delves into the idea of whether

There have been countless times where thinking of you.” How is it that we both were thinking of each other? That, to me, proves we’re all interconnected in ways we don’t yet bigger at play.

What do you hope audiences—both LGBTQ+ and beyond—take away from Exteriors?

I hope audiences leave the experience more open to whatever “randomness” life throws at us. We can all learn something meaningful from seemingly insignificant moments. You never know what that moment might mean eight years from now.

Would you suggest that viewers watch Brotherly Lies before diving into Exteriors?

I definitely think it’s an added bonus, but both films stand on their own.

In your opinion, how has the representation of LGBTQ+ characters and stories in film evolved over time?

How much time do you have? Long answer short; it’s come a long way but still has a long way to go.

How does working on a gay film compare to other projects you’ve been involved in?

Brotherly Lies was my first time working on a queer project and I found it to be pure magic. It’s what little me never knew I wanted to do. It gave me a chance to speak

from my actual lived experiences and forced me to be honest with myself in the storytelling in ways I had never been challenged to do before.

What advice would you give to aspiring actors, particularly LGBTQ+ individuals, who want to break into the film industry?

This is a hard one as after eleven years doing this professionally, I’m trying to figure it out myself. However, there are things that still remain true. Train. Learn. Study the craft, but also equip yourself with knowledge of how to navigate being your own business.

What’s next on the horizon for you?

My new film CUTAWAYS will be coming out soon which I’m really excited for. I got to have blue hair which is something I always wanted to try! Aside from that, I am working towards a law degree and will be doing a pre law fellowship in Europe this summer. I’ve never been, and it’s wildly expensive so I’ve started a crowdfunding campaign on my social media @spacemoneky.

There’s a remake of the 1987 film “The Running Man” on the block. Long before “The Hunger Games” we had this earlier dystopian vision of a future where people competed to survive and professional killers tracked them (and it may be due to the success of “Hunger Games” that this one has sprung back to paranoid life). The earlier adaptation of the Stephen and Lee Pace run to Stephen King

Bachman”) novel starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, and this one has movie-star-of-the-moment Glen Powell (“Twisters”) alongside Josh Brolin, “CODA” star Emilia Jones, and queer actors Katy O’Brian, Lee Pace and “Will & Grace” alum Sean Hayes. Will all this queer talent translate into any sort of LGBTQ+ narrative within the larger story? No one’s telling. And frankly, we just like to see this many gays with jobs in one place. Look for it next November.

Nyle DiMarco hits Sundance with ‘Deaf President Now!’

Deaf queer model, actor and author Nyle DiMarco won his cycle of “America’s Next Top Model” and his season of “Dancing With The Stars” was an Academy Award-nominated producer of the 2021 documentary short, “Audible,” and has now co-directed a feature documentary with Davis Guggenheim (“Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie”) called “Deaf President Now!” It recounts an important piece of Deaf culture history that took place at Gallaudet University, a school for Deaf students, in Washington, D.C. In the late ’80s, the lone hearing candidate for university president was selected, sparking a wave of student protests that succeeded in breaking

down barriers. What will make this documentary different is what its creatures are calling “Deaf Point of View,” which will use American Sign Language as its principle language and will approach visuals and sound design in a way that helps hearing audiences better understand the perspective of the Deaf community. The film premieres at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival with distribution to follow from Apple Original Films.

Murray Hill to host ‘King of Drag’

It’s time, really, for the drag kings to get their own reality competition, now that “RuPaul’s Drag Race” has become an institution and rite of passage for many drag queens who want to step up to the next level of their careers. And who better to host it than “Somebody Somewhere” star Murray Hill, whose trans masc life informed that wonderful HBO series’ narrative, and whose talents as a bon vivant are evident every time he hits the stage. The show is called “King of Drag” and the first six-episode season will feature eight drag king performers competing for the title. And because the kings are not the same as the queens, the competitive aspect will focus more on those differences than the usual reality show challenges. In other words, don’t expect what you’ve seen before.

It premieres this spring on the LGBTQ+ streaming platform Revry.

Janis Ian keeps ‘Breaking Silence’

Perhaps you’re young enough to think “Janis Ian” is merely the name of a character from “Mean Girls.” Well, you’re wrong. She’s an actual queer icon, whose provocative hit singles of the late 1960s and into the ’70s –“Society’s Child” and “At Seventeen” – pushed audiences to deal with pop that was thoughtful and wise. Coming out as a lesbian well before it was career-safe to do so was yet another risk she took. Therefore, it’s fitting now,

after all these years, that the legend get her flowers. “Breaking Silence,” a documentary from Varda Bar-Kar, features the singer-songwriter reviewing her own life, as well as a host of her peers extolling her significance: artists like Joan Baez, Arlo Guthrie, Lily Tomlin, Kathy Mattea, Jean Smart and Laurie Metcalf, among others. If you’re a long-time fan, it’ll be a sweet reminder of the musician you love, and if you’re new to this real-life Janis Ian, it’ll be a great place to get acquainted. It opens at an arthouse near you in March 2025.

Romeo San Vicente learned the truth at seventeen.

in Sex Love Venice, an LGBTQ+ romance film

Sex and Love in The Floating City

Daniel Bateman, a stage actor who appeared on Broadway in Wicked, shines in the lead role of Michael in the groundbreaking LGBTQ+ romance film Sex Love Venice. Written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Steve Balderson, the film delves into the intricate tapestry of love and self-discovery, offering a refreshingly poignant narrative within the LGBTQ+ cinematic landscape. As Michael, Bateman portrays a man disillusioned by the transient connections of hookup culture. He yearns for a love that feels truly meaningful. His search leads him to the enchanting canals of Venice, where he encounters a magnetic and soulful local who challenges his deeply ingrained notions of intimacy. Marco, played by the hunky out actor Alexander Ananasso,

believes in the transformative power of cultivating desire and leads Michael on a raw and vulnerable journey that invites audiences to reflect on their own definitions of love and connection. With its evocative storytelling, breathtaking Venetian backdrop, and powerful lead performances by Bateman and Ananasso, Sex Love Venice is a cinematic experience that transcends boundaries and celebrates the courage it takes to embrace love in its most profound and transformative forms. Daniel Bateman explains more from his home in Los Angeles.

How did you prepare to embody the role of Michael?

Daniel Bateman: I could relate with

Michael. Like him, I have always been deeply in touch with my emotions. I have searched for meaning and purpose in my life and have felt the frustration of not knowing exactly how to navigate today’s hook-up culture.

Sex Love Venice emphasizes patience and intention in cultivating desire. So many things are instant today. We can order food and access nearly anything we want at the touch of a button. Sex Love Venice shows how patience can be important in getting to know someone. We don’t have to learn everything instantly. It takes time to genuinely gather discovery. The reward can be a desire that we might not have known we were capable of.

Throughout the story, we witness Michael grow from someone who hides behind his insecurities to a man who is

unabashedly vocal about them.

I wanted audiences to feel Michael gradually build up his sense of confidence and watch as he realizes that his insecurities and vulnerability are his strength.

Your on-screen dynamic with Alexander Ananasso as Marco is pivotal. How did you and Alexander build the connection required to bring this relationship to life?

I didn’t meet Alexander in person until we both were in Venice for the shoot. There is alot of intimacy within this film and it was so important to develop elements of that. We got along so very well and bonded through humor. A genuine respect and care for one another grew on set. When it would be really cold or windy, he’d give me an extra jacket. I’d wipe his nose! We remain great friends today. We will always be connected from this journey. That’s the great thing about film; it is there forever.

What do you hope audiences take away from Michael’s journey and the film’s broader message about transcending judgment and finding love in unexpected places?

I hope they leave with the comfort in knowing that even though there is so much happening in the world right now, behind the chaos, there is beauty in connection. It’s important to feel more, to desire more, and to get out there and be yourself because we are all absolutely worthy of true love.

How do you see this film contributing to the landscape of LGBTQ+ cinema? There’s a place for all kinds of storytelling, but I feel most films are often soft on romance or too sexually charged. Sex Love Venice celebrates the realness of both intense sexuality and tender romance.

Sex Love Venice is streaming now on Apple TV, Amazon, Fandango at Home, Google Play, YouTube Movies, and select cable systems. Visit https://www.dikenga.com/sexlovevenice
