Sean Hayes Wants You to Meet (Lazy) Susan
Photo: Shout! Studios
Lazy Susan actor on playing a woman in earnest, Will & Grace ending and his upcoming Net ix show
By Chris Azzopardi Under any other conditions, it might seem strange to tell Sean Hayes what I'm wearing. Given that Hayes slips into some sweats to play a do-nothing cisgender woman named Susan O'Connell – hence the movie's name, Lazy Susan – it makes some sense that I tell the Emmy-winning Will & Grace star that I'm lounging in athleisure like a lazy Susan. (And, well, he did ask me if I was working from home – our new not-normal normal) Where do you go with Hayes from there? Everywhere: from developing Susan to why it was time to end Will & Grace (for real this time) and how his best lazy days involve his husband and Sigourney Weaver.
What's a lazy day in your life like? A lazy day in my life is usually Sundays. My husband Scotty and I don't do anything and we call it Cinema Sunday. We pick a movie out and we just sit there on the couch and watch it, and we usually have the doors open to the backyard and we take naps. Or I'll put on This Old House. I love that show so much.
So you guys will watch that together or you'll do the movie and then you'll nap? Yeah. Doesn't that sound exciting? (Laughs.)
What was your last Cinema Sunday lick? The original Alien. There's nothing more relaxing than Alien. Nothing more relaxing than watching somebody's stomach burst open.
I've read that Susan is based on a character you initially developed for an audition for a sketch show years ago. Is that true? No – yes, of course! I just like to make things up! No, it was. I had a call from my agent when I was 21 years old living in Chicago to come in and audition to replace quote-unquote “the white guy” in In Living Color, which was Jim Carrey because I guess he was leaving the show. So I go into the audition with a bag full of wigs and props and just tons of stuff to do, tons of characters. One of those characters was Susan, and I did it and that's the story.
And so here we are decades later, and at the suggestion of my very good friend Reyna Larson, who I went to high school and college with. She was like, “You should do something with that character you did but name her Lazy Susan.” I thought, “That's such a great title,” and then I worked backward from the title and that character. I wrote a TV pilot in one day. It was awesome. It was so fun. It just came out of me. Then after I shared it with my friend Darlene Hunt, a proli ic TV writer who created The Big C on Showtime, she was like, “Honey, I think this is a movie,” and I was like, “Really?” She goes, “Yeah, this script is the irst act of the movie.” And I was like, “That's really interesting.” And so there we go. Then I brought it to Carrie Aizley, who's another good friend – they're all good friends – and Carrie also read the pilot and she came up with some really witty, amazing dialogue for the rest of the characters. So we all three sat down and wrote it together. It's good to know people – otherwise Susan might've still been dormant. I think she wakes up dormant!
Oh, touché! But Darlene I've known since I was 27 years old. I got her, her irst writing gig on Will & Grace. So I've known her for years and years. And Carrie too. I was a guest star on (the 2006-2007 Oxygen comedy) Campus Ladies, which she was a star of. But back to Susan: I didn't want the joke to be a man playing a woman, as we've seen so many times. I wanted it as an acting challenge. I thought it'd be really interesting to feel extremely uncomfortable in woman's clothes but acting like I'm not. This character might've played differently 15, 20 years ago. Sure.
But now there's heightened sensitivity around who is playing what. For instance, I read a comment on your Twitter that asked: “With a guy playing a cisgender woman, does this not fall into the same issue of caucasian actors playing Asian characters or cis actors playing trans characters?”
what I love about this ilm is, sure, if you connect with it and ind something for yourself to pull from, great. But my intention was just to entertain.
You mentioned not playing her gender as a joke, like it was in ilms like Some Like It Hot, Tootsie and Mrs. Doubt ire. In those ilms, the joke was a man, or men, in a dress. They were men playing a woman to reach a certain goal as a man. This is not that movie. This is a character that I'm playing, just like Jared Leto, who I think is a brilliant actor and who won an Oscar for playing a trans character (in Dallas Buyers Club). That's why we're actors. We like to play dierent parts, period. We shouldn't be thrown into the social conversation of what's right or wrong when it comes to the craft of acting.
How did Susan initially come to you? Is she based on anyone in particular? Yes, but I can't say who. (Laughs.) It's based on a few people. By the way, men and women. Famous people? Maybe, maybe not.
Like Jack, she's pretty self-absorbed. Do you see any similarities? I don't see them that similar at all. I think Jack is very put together, and when given a task very responsible, shows up, has a bunch of dierent jobs. Susan can't even get out of bed.
What's the message that you hope people take away from Lazy Susan? You know, I haven't thought of that. I hope people enjoy the ilm, period. You know, there's a lot of movies with something deep to say and

I don't have time for any of those people. That's my answer. Those people are way overthinking all of this.
It's a Cinema Sunday lick. It's a Cinema Sunday ilm. I really, really have an incredible af inity for those ilms from the '90s that were Sundance or independent ilms and ilm festival ilms.
You mean the ones we don't really see anymore? Right, exactly. And so the Oscars have become an independent ilm festival, that's all. But I love Welcome to the Dollhouse and I loved Napoleon Dynamite and I loved all those ilms. Now it's huge studio ilms that open these ilm festivals when it's like, what about the little ilms that we all used to go to discover at independent ilm festivals? I wanted to make one of those. I mean, hopefully we succeeded. I think we did. But those are close to my heart. Probably because that's what started my career too (Hayes starred in the 1998 gay-themed romcom Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss). As far as Will & Grace goes, after its recent revival, it's been said that it will absolutely not return, ever. There will be no more. That is 100 percent
for sure.
How did you and the rest of the cast reach the decision to end it for good? It's time. We were supposed to come back for 10 episodes and that's it, and then because of the response we just kept making season after season. I think we ended up making something like 52, 53 episodes and it was so fun and I'm so, so grateful and honored and privileged to have that experience again, but everybody knows when it's time to move on. I thought eight seasons was long. Then here we are with three seasons. I mean, they weren't quote-unquote “full” seasons like they used to be, but in the world we live in three seasons seems to be plenty. It had nothing to do with any cast member feuds on set? Because my heart was hurting when I read about that as a possibility for the show ending. Yeah. Look at you. The hard-hittingquestions journalist getting in there.
No, no, no. I was just like, I hope it's not true. I don't want it to be true because I grew up with these characters. No, no, no, no. It was a very mutual decision
between the cast and the producers together.
I've grown up with all of you – you guys changed my life as a little gay boy. I love that.
What boundaries are you proud of breaking with the Will & Grace revival? I think our jobs are never done as a society and a gay culture to educate America. It's never done. It's never done to educate people about diversity and inclusion, so for that reason I'm sad the show is over, because somebody needs to do it and somebody needs to do it in a big way for lots of eyeballs and ears to see and hear.
The last time we spoke we talked about how much of “the slap” between you and Megan Mullally is really kind of a dance. How much of “Just Jack” was improv? Well, the hand gestures were me. On paper it just says “Just Jack,” but we had the best writers in television ever on the show, in my opinion, and at the same time I had a director that's the best director in television. He was the best for many reasons, one of which is letting me experiment with physical comedy. So that's where some of that comes from – just experimenting. You don't count yourself as an activist, but
do you think you'll see a gay president in your lifetime? I have to believe we will, yes. And I have to believe that he will be referred to as a president, not a gay president. That's the other thing: I would never say you are a gay journalist or I'm a gay actor. I'm an actor. You're a journalist. Why do we have to preface every single title with our sexual orientation? What's next for you? What I've been working on is the Net lix series Q Force, which is (laughs) ... you know, OK, the short description is “gay James Bond.” (Laughs.)
But, Sean, we can't preface it with “gay.” (Laughs.) I KNOW. That's why I'm laughing because I just said that. But in that sense, you have to because it's the person's name, not the title: gay James Bond. I wouldn't say gay spy or gay agent. That's the short answer. Gabe Liedman – he runs PEN15, which is such a funny show – is the creator and showrunner of Q Force, and Mike Schur is supervising producer. Mike Schur created Parks and Rec and Brooklyn 99 and Good Place and wrote on Saturday Night Live. So we're surrounded by incredible talent and then incredible writers, but it's really … I can't wait for people to see this show. It's super, super fun. And it's a great cast – but I can't say who it is yet. But you, of all people, your mind will be blown.
You weren't out during the irst part of your career, and so much has changed just in the years since then. What do you appreciate most about this current moment for LGBTQ actors? Just to clarify, the irst part of my career I was out. I just wasn't out to the press. Had we met at a cafe, I'd be like, “Yeah, I'm out and proud!” But you can read all about my issues about that online. Anyways, I think the tide continues to change in the favor of being historically on the right side, in that I think inally people in decisionmaking roles are becoming aware of the sensitivities that they should have had years prior. I mean, I'm a fan of “best actor gets the part,” no matter what. No matter what. No matter if you're gay, straight, bi, lesbian, LGBTQ, black, Asian, whatever. So is it OK that someone like Scarlett Johansson play a trans character? (Hesitates.) I don't know. I don't know. I mean … I mean… I don't know. It's such a good question. What do you think?
I think that there aren't enough roles for trans people and that there are plenty of trans actors who can play those roles, so until they're being cast in those roles, I think no. OK, then that's what I think then.
Yeah? (Laughs.) I'm on the fence, you know. As an actor we want to challenge ourselves and we want to play different parts and that's why we're actors. But on the other hand, there should be plenty of parts to challenge yourself that don't take away jobs from people that are entitled to be given the opportunity.

Care Resource's Behavioral Health Services Department will also offer all counseling services via telehealth. Our licensed behavioral health specialists are available to discuss the heightened levels of anxiety that our community is experiencing during this time and to offer coping mechanisms. Virtual support and social groups will replace in-person meetings. Emergency counseling services will be provided at all locations in Broward and Miami, but
clients are encouraged to call prior to going in for services. For those patients in our Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) program, medical appointments will be scheduled as usual. RuPaul's Drag Race
Season 12

Aiden Zhane
By Scott Holland
I
n Episode 6 of season 12 of RuPaul's Drag Race, it was the infamous Snatch Game. Miss Vanjie made an appearance in the work room and back stage during uncut. The special guest judges this week were Jonathan Bennett and Daniel Franzese. The top 3 queens are: Sherry Pie, Jackie Cox and the winner Gigi Goode who gets $5,000. The bottom two queens are Brita and Aiden Zhane with Aiden sashaying away. It was a pleasure to sit down with Aiden for this exclusive Hotspots interview:
At what age did drag become an interest and how did you pick your name? I was about 18 or 19 the first time I had exposure to drag and that was watching season 3 of Drag Race. I wanted my drag name to fit my vibe. My first name starts with A and my last
name starts with Z, so it encompasses the whole alphabet, and both names could be males or female.
How many times did you apply to be on RuPaul's Drag Race? How did it feel when you found out you got chosen? I auditioned 3 times: season 8, 9, and then again 12. It felt amazing when I got the call and I remember screaming at the top of my lungs.
Tell us about your RuPaul's Drag Race experience? My experience on the show as a whole was definitely high stressed and its hard work. You can try to mentally prepare yourself but until you experience it first-hand you have no idea. I feel like I came out the other end stronger, and I left my mark.
Is there something you wish you did different and/or is there a certain look you wish we could have all seen? We all want to be the winner, so naturally watching the show back I wish I had changed things, but overall I feel like I did what I went there to do.
A few of the girls seemed to have been picking on you during filming, have you all made up? Since the show all of us have been in a group chat, and we are all friends now and we all talk all the time.
What's your marital status? Single, and I aint looking for a guy. I am more than happy to be focusing on my drag at the moment.
Who do you want to win? I wouldn't be able to choose anyone. This season was so diverse, and talented, and fresh. I honestly feel anyone can be suited to take the crown. What's ahead for Aiden? Going forward I want to do more drag and do what I love doing. I would also love to do drag horror films.

HOT BODIES by Tom Bonanti
KEEP EXERCISING FOR A HEALTHY BODY AND PEACE OF MIND!
T
hese days new terms have entered our vocabulary very quickly. Certainly, “social distancing” and “selfisolation” are daunting, but effective concepts that will help eradicate the dreaded COVID19 over time. Washing your hands from elbow to fingernails repeatedly for a full 20 seconds throughout the day is a good practice always. This critical period is also ideal for you to fortify your immune system against harmful cold and flu viruses. Besides getting plenty of fresh air and exercise, what you eat makes a difference. Strengthen you body with
the following mighty foods. Eating more protein is a sure way to stay at the top of your game. Proteins are made up of amino acids. These compounds help turn T cells, B cells and antibodies in your immune system into germ fighters that spot and kill harmful cells that enter your body before they can start infection. Combine this fact with protein's abilities to boost metabolism, burn fat, decrease harmful LDL, reduce inflammation, and preserve and build lean muscle. Reach for healthy low-fat protein sources like cold water fish, lean poultry, and eggs. Remember that protein is also found in whole grains, fruit and vegetables.
Here are some other common foods that bolster your immune system: Broccoli contains vitamins A, C, and glutathione, all potent antioxidants. Eat it raw, steamed or cooked, or in soups and stews, or dip it in low-fat dressing as a snack.
Chicken soup, either your grandma's recipe or out of a can, this elixir is rich in protein, healthy fat, and it contains carnosine which helps protect your body from flu viruses. Garlic combats skin infections by fighting bacteria, viruses, and fungi. It's also effective at lowering your LDL, the bad cholesterol. Don't use salt or powder, go for the real stuff and use it heavily in soups, sauces, stir-fries, etc.
Ginger is a good source of antioxidants which fight free radicals (pesky toxins) in your system caused by stress, colds, viruses and poor nutrition. Skip sugary ginger ale and supplements and get it straight from the knobby root. Add the real thing grated to any food, or steep it in hot water to make tea. Low-fat yogurt contains pro-biotics that may ease the severity of colds. Look for labels that say “live” or “active” cultures. Add fruit or
granola for added fiber and flavor. Spinach, eaten raw or cooked, contains folate which helps the body make new cells and repair DNA. It also contains fiber and vitamin C Sweet potatoes are rich in beta-carotene which the body turns into vitamin A, which in turn mops up free radicals, bolsters the immune system and may even stall the aging process! Wheat germ is the part of a wheat seed that feeds the baby wheat plant. It is rich in zinc, antioxidants, B vitamins, fiber, protein and healthy fat. Use this as a nutrient dense partial replacement for white flour in most recipes. Please stay healthy, take care of yourself and your loved ones, and we will make it through this difficult time stronger, healthier and wiser!

HOW WILL WE BE DIFFERENT AFTER THE CORONAVIRUS? The Department of Homeland Security was developed in the aftermath of 9/11 as a direct government response to national security threat. So too will we see policy changes to combat the threat of future infectious diseases especially with strong leadership we’ve witnessed from people like Dr. Anthony Fauci and Governors Andrew Cuomo, Gavin Newsom and Ron DeSantis.

By Matt Tesoriero A crystal ball would be an amazing tool to own right now. Nothing fancy. Just round and shiny and smooth. No app to download. No charger required. It would tell us everything we need to know living in our upside-downCOVID-19-world. We could ask it questions. How long are we going to live like this? Will I get my job back? Will I be able to pay my rent? When will I be able to eat at a restaurant and go to the movies or see a concert or watch my favorite team play? Will our lives change forever? What good will come out of this pandemic. The short answer is: we don’t know…yet. But one thing is for sure. We’ve changed. A new Pew Research Center survey inds that the coronavirus outbreak is having profound impact on Americans in a variety of ways. Nearly nine-in-ten U.S. adults say their life has changed at least a little as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, including 44% who say their life has changed in a major way. Today's existential threat has left many Americans jobless, isolated, and wondering: What will happen next? Some possibilities: Since so many governments were caught unprepared, we could see stronger government action and an international pandemic initiative to handle future outbreaks. (Visual: senate/house/politicians)
There could be a shift in geopolitics and a possible rise in nationalism. Nations across the world have closed their borders to combat the spread of the virus. We may see possible a change in how we conduct ourselves as country around the globe. "With every country closing its borders, there's a risk that if any kind of uni ication does happen, it will just be at the national level. At the end of this, the English will say 'we rallied and we did this on our own,' and the French will say the same thing, and the
Italians will say the same thing … so I think nationalism could be an outcome. (Source: Inside Business) More work could become remote, businesses might not hire as many people as they had before the pandemic, and that could lead to a universal less income. Millions of Americans are currently working from home to prevent further spread of the novel coronavirus. The increase of telecommuting/working from home may lead to a fundamental shift in how companies manage staff including more layoffs and a reshaping of how we view work. Disruptions in education could lead to longterm consequences. Or we may see the development of new, creative solutions for remote learning. (Visual: computer-on-line classes-classroom) Everyone is sitting at home. Their connections beyond their front doors down the street and across the globe is through their smartphone. In the post-pandemic world, technology will be as ubiquitous as it is now, if not more, and tech companies will become even more powerful and dominant. As American children are forced to switch to remote learning for the remainder of the school year, dif iculties and distraction will make learning from home far more dif icult. And the disparity is alarming. Some schools with many families don't have access to internet that would allow them to adequately homeschool. And others, like Broward County, who have the resources, distribute devices to facilitate remote learning.
HOW HAVE WE CHANGED? We may not yet know how we’ve truly changed since we’re still living through this crisis, but it’s clear our lives have adjusted.
Technologically Traditional “off-line” businesses around the world are being decimated including hotels, car manufacturers, restaurants, retail and airplanes. The digital world, however, is thriving. We are surviving through this pandemic because of technology.
On the international level, there will be less cooperation. The trend of nationalism and self-reliance will continue, especially as the fear of the "external" and "foreign" can be exploited by populists.
Psychologically Where were you when the pandemic happened? Life as we know it may be looked at in terms of BC “Before Conronavirus”. Many people will look back and see this as a time when things changed in their lives dramatically.
Much of our lives are habitual, and habits are highly effective in helping us work, look after our families and pursue our goals. This pandemic has changed those habits. Now we work and travel in a different way. Our daily routines changed, including when and how we eat and how we live and communicate with our families and friends. Soon new habits will begin to form.
Healthcare The death toll and the number of people contracting the virus is exacting a massive psychological toll on the world's population, and there are bound to be calls for action. People across the globe will use COVID-19 as a strong justi ication to demand universal healthcare.
organizers. “One of the challenges we ind today is that LGBT people are even more isolated.” To overcome that isolation, the world’s biggest international Pride networks, Interpride and the European Pride Organisers Association, are organizing a “Global Pride” to be celebrated online on June 27. Global Pride organizers are planning a 24-hour live streamed event, including remote contributions from international Prides, speeches from human rights activists, workshops with activists and high-pro ile performers yet to be con irmed. Sociologically We humans are social animals. We need it. Crave it. Seek it out. So, when the fog lifts ever so gently, we will surge back to what we love to do. Live. And socialize! Americans and the LGBT community in particular will bounce back from this. But as history shows us, for good or for bad, we have a pretty short-term memory. It's hard to know if people will think and act differently.
For Americans, we will look at other countries who have provided their citizenry with top notch care particularly those who offer universal healthcare. Sadly, the United States ranks 30th in the world for healthcare. The pandemic is a true litmus test on healthcare systems. What works. What doesn’t. We will no doubt make changes. The fear is too great not to.
LGBT “LGBT people around the world are insanely resilient, but they face isolation every day in
their life,” says J. Andrew Baker, co-President of Interpride, the international association of Pride
Will we adapt our behavior or go back to what we did before? Will people ever go on cruise ships again? Or go to concerts in huge arenas sweating shoulder-to-shoulder? Most likely we will. How can we not? The question of how the epidemic ends and how we ultimately change is a really interesting one. And one we wish we could answer now. Oh, to own a crystal ball!
