From the PUBLISHER
WE ARE BACK IN PRINT Welcome back to this week's edition of Hotspots. I can't begin to tell you how pleased I am that we are able to offer you the Digital Content Manager option of reading us online and Matt@HotspotsMedia.com back in print for the first time Matt Tesoriero since the pandemic began. We made a conscious decision to go digital only as many businesses were closed and our distribution network was limited to just outdoor boxes. Unlike other LGBT publications, we publish a fresh magazine every week, 52 weeks a year, and have never missed an issue in our 35 years history. Today, I'm happy to report that many of our beloved LGBTQ businesses and services are ramping back up and following the new CDC guidelines. To help, we will start by printing a monthly edition the first Thursday of every month (Next Edition: July 2nd). The weekly edition is still being published every week online with fresh content as always. I don't need to tell you that these
are very difficult times for all of us and, while it seems clichĂŠ to say; we will get through this together!
On Monday, the Supreme Court issued a major win for the LGBTQ+ community and issued a ground breaking ruling that prohibits workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. While marriage equality was a major win for us under the Obama administration, this 6 - 3 ruling means that employers can no longer discriminate against anyone simply for who they love or who they are.
Happy Father's Day, and Have a great week. Also, don't forget to tune into Hotspots Live every week for the latest video news and entertainment right here in South Florida!

E
Season 5
Blair St. Clair
Episode 7 of All Stars 5 starts out with Ru explaining to the girls that in this week’s Maxi challenge they will face off in a stand-up comedy smack down. Each of them needs to work up a comedy routine that is jam packed with jokes. Later in the day they will try out their jokes with the hilarious Ross Matthews and a special guest funny lady…..we find out later its the one and only Jane Krakowski. The next night they will perform in front of a live audience at Ru Paul’s Shady Shack. Since Miz Cracker was the top all-star last week she gets to choose the order in which the girls will perform. Ru reminds the girls that this is the challenge that decides which 3 girls will be in the finale of allstars. Miz Cracker decided that Juju will start, followed by Blair, and then she will take the stage and Shea will end the performances. On the runway Ru introduces the guest judges Sam Richardson and Jane is back. The Shady
Shack opens and Juju starts and does a very good job. Blair was next and although she was funny in rehearsal she chokes. Miz Cracker kills it and is followed by Shea who is very good. The category for the runway is “Ah Freak Out.” The top all-star this week was Miz Cracker who won an 8 night South African Safari and wine country adventure courtesy of South African tourism. She then went up against this lip sync assassin; Kennedy Davenport. In the end Miz Cracker won and pocketed $20,000 ($10 from this week and $10 that rolled over from last week). She then decides to send home Blair St. Clair. We find out that Juju and Shea voted for Blair as well. It was a pleasure to sit down with the beautiful Blair St. Clair for this exclusive Hotspots Interview: How has your life changed since you
were on Drag Race? It has changed dramatically. I moved across the country to live with my now boyfriend. I released a few albums, and have been in a major motion picture, which will be released soon. I am also waiting to film another role after Covid 19 passes. I am really grateful for all these opportunities. How did you meet your boyfriend? We keep our relationship private, but we met through mutual friends. What has been some of your favorite cities to visit as a RuPaul Alumni? My favorite place in the world to visit is the UK, specifically London. I also had a blast in Amsterdam. And of course my hometown of Indianapolis Indiana is my all-time favorite place. How exciting was it to get called back for All Stars? It was very exciting. I knew All Stars 4 wasn’t the right time, but I was hoping to do an all stars so I had everything ready except the specific runway looks which they tell you one you are chosen. I was prepared and excited. How hard was it to keep the secret that you are on all stars? It was so hard, as people had an idea since I disappeared from all my social media for a few weeks. It’s fun to play with fans without giving them full acknowledgement. How did you prepare differently for all stars than you did the first time you were on the show? Having done drag race before I knew exactly how to prepare for the competition. Last time I used whatever I could that I already had. This time everything was new, and I thought about every look I had. I didn’t want to hold back at all. You were pretty the first time you were on Drag Race, but now you are stunning. How did you improve your make-up skills in such a short period of time? Where I was from, I had to paint a certain way or else I wouldn’t get bookings. Travelling the world and experiencing different cultures and looks, I experimented. I was able to learn my face in a new way. I am humbled to learn from so many amazing make-up artists.
You are also, so much more confident then you were on your original season. I love it, but where did it come from? That happened for me from investing in a lot of therapy and time spent on my mental health with family and friends. I learned not to care about what other people think of me. Now that you have been eliminated, who do you want to win? I love both Miz Cracker and Shea immensely, but I am rooting for my sister Jujubee as we have been friends for many years. I think she would be the first Asian to win and that would be amazing for the world right now. What’s Ahead for Blair? The future is holding a lot of happiness for me, as I am finding who I am in this world. I have album coming out called “Identity,” which will be available on all digital platforms. I have been releasing singles every week, and this week’s single was appropriately called “Take Me Home.” I also have a new human hair wig line coming out called “Hair by Blair.” Is there anything I didn’t ask you that you want to talk about? I’m really excited for the future and I want to remind people to be kind and happy and never stop reaching for your dreams no matter where you come from! For more information on Blair. MARK CHAMBERS
I
am thinking of changing the title of this column to “Dispatches from Hell,” because I truly feel like every week is just another barrage of awful news stories, most of them with Trump at the center. And SO MANY PEOPLE ARE DYING. And the Trump Administration’s current messaging on COVID19, even as some states are rapidly reaching peak levels, is, “Let’s be more racist.” I did, though, want to give a shout-out to the brave woman in Arizona who ransacked a mask display at her local Target and filmed it all to inspire us all. And I am definitely inspired to declare that anti-maskers are the fucking worst. It’s been a while since I did a meat-and-potatoes "Creep" column because of the country being on fire and all. So this week I decided that it had to be about someone other than Trump (though his racist Fourth of July rant at Mount Rushmore was prime "Creep" material). And so this week I have Mark Chambers, former mayor of Carbon Hill, Alabama. On Facebook, where bad ideas go to thrive, Chambers posted, “We live in a society where homosexuals lecture us on morals, transvestites lecture us on human biology, baby killers lecture us on human rights and socialists lecture us on economics.” A Facebook friend commented that they feared for the country their grandkids would live in and that it would “take a revolution” to change things. Chambers' response was to call for murder. “The only way to change it would be to kill the problem out. I know it’s bad to say but without killing them out there’s no way to fix it.” Aww, he knew it was bad to say. And yet he
OF THE WEEK BY D'ANNE WITKOWSKI
still said it. Actually, he didn’t just say it. He typed it out and then decided to post it to a very public platform. According to The Advocate, Chambers told WBRC FOX6, “I never said anything about killing out gays or anything like that.” But when the reporter read his own words to him he said, “That’s in a revolution. That’s right! If it comes to a revolution in this country both sides of these people will be killed out.” Oh, he just meant kill gays in a revolution. Got it. Totally OK then. Carry on. And so people called for Chambers to resign and he did. The end. Ha ha. Just kidding. He posted the “kill the problem” comment over a year ago. And he’s remained the mayor ever since. Until now. Something about the combination of violent homophobia and virulent racism that go handin-hand and Chambers found himself in the center of that very tight Venn diagram. When the University of Alabama football team, the Crimson Tide (who are not, sadly “the fighting tampons” — truly a missed opportunity), posted a video on June 25, that featured players and coach speaking against racism and that ended with the refrain, “All lives can’t matter until Black lives matter.” Chambers had finally had enough. He posted on Facebook that he was getting rid of University of Alabama football memorabilia. “Their sorry ass political views is why their [sic] getting out of my house,” he posted, followed by, “When you put Black lives before all lives they can kiss my ass.” This brave stand was followed soon after by a one line resignation letter reading, "I quit the

job of mayor effective June 27 at 4:30 p.m.” Good riddance. Carbon Hill, Alabama, has been through some shit lately. In April, a tornado tore up their town. In March, the body of a city council member’s wife was found in a creek (spoiler alert: the husband did it). So, frankly, getting rid of an openly homophobic and racist mayor is actually a little bit of light in an otherwise dark few months. Stepping in to replace Chambers is April Kennedy Herron, a white woman and the city’s first woman to hold that office. Regarding Chambers’s comments, Herron told Daily Mountain Eagle, “Everybody has the right to their opinion, but nobody is free of consequences. That's just how it is. I don't share those views, never have. I wasn't raised that way.”
Then the Daily Mountain Eagle asked if Carbon Hill was “racially divided.” "I've never realized it,” she said. “It wasn't this or that, or his and hers, or mine and theirs, or Black and white. It was just Carbon Hill.” She ended her comment with, “I hope not.” Considering the mayor she’s replaced, who was in office since 2014, was ousted for being a racist I’d say Carbon Hill, like the rest of America, is going to need more than hope. I wish her the best. D'Anne Witkowski is a poet, writer and comedian living in Michigan with her wife and son. She has been writing about LGBT politics for over a decade. 'Queer Eye' Stars on How to Talk to 'All Lives Matter' People
Photos credit Net ix.
Jonathan, Antoni and Karamo weigh in on the Black Lives Matter movement In this current moment of civil unrest and racial tension, Queer Eye stars Karamo Brown (culture), Jonathan Van Ness (grooming) and Antoni Porowski (food and wine) are speaking out and up about the Black Lives Matter movement and the importance of self-care in sustaining the ight for justice. Their Emmy Award-winning Net lix show, a reboot of the original that also features Bobby Berk (interior design) and Tan France (fashion), has been a model for moving through the world the best you can and by showing up as your best self. So the ifth season, currently on Net lix, couldn't have come at a better time. For the 10 episodes in the current season, the Fab Five headed east to Philadelphia, the birthplace of the nation, to offer con idence and encouragement to a diverse group of their heroes seeking ways to improve their lives, from a gay pastor to a struggling Black
entrepreneurial dog groomer. Interviewer Chris Azzopardi caught up with Van Ness, Brown and Porowski, who weighed in on the Black Lives Matter movement and how to talk to “All Lives Matter” people. Nice to meet you all virtually in the Zoom world. First question is are you guys wearing pants on this Zoom interview? Karamo and Antoni both show that they are wearing shorts and Jonathan is wearing a skirt.
I know this is a heavy time to talk about Queer Eye, and I have seen your Instagram posts which were very moving, but I want you all to know that you show the world what the world can be through what you do. Talking about the show, on it you talk about how self-care is necessary in order
to recharge and ight for justice. Right now, how are you guys taking care of yourselves and each other? Karamo - I am in a space where I check in with myself constantly and I am ready to ight and try and educate people and I think Karamo we are all in that space. Also it's ok to say “today I need and hour or two or the whole day to recharge by going outside, dancing, doing the arts or doing something that makes you feel good.” This is what the message of Queer Eye is. If you don't take care of yourself than you can't support other people. I do this myself, and then I come back stronger and ight for equality and justice which is what we should all be doing. Antoni – For me it's a tricky balance as I feel like I have so much to learn and I have a
Antoni
responsibility to educate myself and that's sort of my version of self-care and making myself feel a tiny bit less useless. I have been fostering a dog, which has been incredibly helpful to have something to take care for…adopt don't shop. I have also been cooking a lot, which is something I haven't been able to do the last few years with our crazy schedule. This has made me feel better. I just recently got back to New York and the next morning I went to a Black Lives Matter protest in Washington Square Park, which made me feel like I was part of a community. To be out there with people who are doing something about this was really helpful for me.
Jonathan – I think Quarantine had me fall in love with gardening and I am obsessed with it; that's my selfJonathan care thing. I have also been cooking a lot. I also think that Covid-19 slowed down so much of the travelling and that BLM has stepped back into the forefront - thank god – I am grateful I have some of my jobs (podcast) so I can be engaged in it.
There is a lot of us who have “All Lives Matter” people in our families and we need to change their thoughts. What kind of conversations would you have with these people to change their minds and make them understand? Jonathan - Personally I have been ighting those people for so long, as I do come from a rural Midwestern town. “13th” is a really good 90 minutes for someone who does not understand how slavery and Jim Crow has affected us, and has gotten us to where we are now. There are many other incredible resources, and we have to keep talking about it. You can't watch 13th and come away not super moved and understanding the systematic oppression black people have faced in this country since its inception..
Karamo - I would take it from an emotional state and say to them “what are you scared you're going to lose by saying this other person's life is of value. Because, there is a fear there. They feel like it's taking away from them. What are you going to lose by helping someone else be seen and supported. And then say, what would you gain emotionally by seeing someone else feel loved and supported? By helping them understand that the loss is
not real but the gain can be so monumental for African Americans, and people of color. If anybody is still in a space where you don't want to give people their equal rights, what are you scared you are going to lose?
Antoni – If you educate yourself it becomes undeniable. There is no shortage of podcasts or documentary's. I just watched “I am not your Negro,” and I have been listening to “The 1619 Project” from the New York Times, which is fantastic. Once you hear all of these facts put together rather than tiny little snippers, it becomes so much harder to debate. It's educating ourselves, and every single one of us has a responsibility to do that. Thanks guys and thanks for giving so much hope, love, and diversity and inclusion to your work. Its much appreciated by be and everyone that knew I was going to be talking to you today.
Season 5 of “Queer Eye” is currently on Net lix.
