H

Hillary Rodham Clinton has been in the public eye for over forty years, and for nearly twenty-five of those years, she has carved out her own legacy, refusing to be a mere mention alongside her husband, former President Bill Clinton. She served for eight years as United States Senator from New York, and then went on to represent our country abroad as our third female Secretary of State. In the upcoming presidential election, she will face Republican nominee Donald Trump. With just weeks before

Election Day, polls show Clinton and Trump in a close battle, with each candidate boasting a loyal voting base. Like in past elections, the turnout from Florida could very well decide the end result this time around. Recently Secretary Clinton sat down with Hotspots' Mike Halterman for an exclusive interview, in which she talks about her proposed policies should she be elected, the legacy of the LGBT rights movement, and her vision for our country's future.

businesses to the community health providers in Miami on the front lines of the Zika epidemic. And, of course, I've been so inspired by the community of Orlando, which has shown such bravery and resilience after the tragedy at Pulse.

You had the chance to visit the Pulse makeshift memorial in Orlando this summer. What were your thoughts when you first heard of this tragedy, and how did you feel when you visited the site? Thank you for participating in this interview, Madam Secretary. You've visited Florida many times this year. What are some of the things you like the most about Florida and Floridians? Every time I visit Florida, I'm inspired by the diverse, vibrant cultures that have come together. It's a real microcosm of America. I've been so grateful for the ideas and insights Floridians have shared with me – from the brewery owners in St. Petersburg who had excellent advice on how to support small

I was shocked when I heard the news, and heartbroken – for the lives cut short, for their loved ones, for the city of Orlando, for LGBT people and their allies. At the same time, I was struck by the compassion of everyone who rushed to find ways to help. Visiting the memorial was an experience I'll never forget. Standing there, you can feel the grief of all of the people who were affected by the tragedy. You can also feel the outpouring of love and support from a community that refuses to be defined by hate. It's moving and inspiring.

Florida is primarily a tourism economy. Under your

economic plan, how will the standard of living be improved for Floridians, especially those who work in tourism and the service industry? Anyone who is willing to work hard should be able to find a job that pays well enough to raise a family – a job that provides dignity, pride, and a bright future. So we're going to raise the minimum wage, strengthen overtime rules, and ensure that workers are treated fairly. We're also going to bring our policies in line with the way families in Florida and across the country actually live and work today. Equal pay, paid family leave, predictable scheduling, earned sick days – these aren't luxuries, they're economic necessities.

Please outline which steps you would take to improve the lives of LGBT Floridians and other LGBT Americans in your first term, should you be elected. I'll continue President Obama's executive actions on LGBT equality. I'll also work with Congress to pass the Equality Act, to finally guarantee full federal equality for LGBT

Americans. I'll fight to end the cruel, dangerous practice of so-called “conversion therapy” – LGBT kids don't need to be “cured” of anything. I'll also ensure that LGBT elders have the support they deserve. And we'll protect the right of transgender Americans to live safely as themselves – from taking on the crisis of violence against transgender women of color to making it easier for official documents to reflect your true gender.

What was your "evolution" like on the topic of LGBT rights? How do you see LGBT people and think of LGBT rights now compared to years past? My views have been shaped by people I know and love. Two of my parents' closest friends in Little Rock were their next-door neighbors, Dillard and Larry. They visited my father in the hospital at the end of his life. They're a loving and committed couple. And I came to realize just how deep an injustice it was that they couldn't be legally married. Dillard and Larry helped shape my views. I'm

grateful to the advocates, families and friends who never stopped insisting that what's right is right. They helped change my mind, and I'm very glad they did.

How do you envision your future administration's legacy with regard to LGBT rights, and how do you wish to shape the future of the LGBT movement? There are still too many places where LGBT Americans are targeted for harassment and violence. Too many young people still feel hopeless and alone. As president, I'll do everything I can to protect the progress we've made, build on it, and make it real for LGBT people in every corner of our country, so no one is left behind. I want future generations of LGBT people to grow up knowing, without a doubt, that they are equal in the eyes of the law and in the hearts and minds of their fellow Americans.

Climate change is a very real issue that state leaders in Florida have not taken seriously. As president, how would you influence the national discussion on this topic, and what policies would your administration

have to combat climate change? Climate change is a very real threat, and I refuse to allow our country to move backwards from the progress we've made combatting this issue. To start, my Administration will take drastic steps, cutting emissions to 30 percent below 2005 levels by 2025. We will launch a $60 billion Clean Energy Challenge, providing our communities the resources to cut carbon pollution and expand clean energy. We will invest in our clean energy infrastructure and will defend our smart pollution and efficiency standards. We will also commit to cutting methane emissions by 4045 percent over the next ten years.

Many members of our community will be voting for you, but others may still be apprehensive. In short, what would you say to those people to convince them to vote for you? The stakes have never been higher for the LGBT community than they are right now. Donald Trump would appoint Supreme Court

justices who will overturn marriage equality, and he's chosen a running mate who tried to write discrimination into Indiana's laws as governor and said that marriage equality could bring about “societal collapse.” If I'm elected, LGBT Americans will always have a champion and an ally in the White House. But I can't do it without you. I'm going to work hard to earn every vote – I'm not taking anything for granted!

We know a lot about your professional side, but when you have the chance to unwind, what do you like to do? What would your "dream day" be like? Lots of uninterrupted time with my family – especially my grandchildren, Charlotte and Aidan. FaceTime is a wonderful invention, but sometimes a grandparent needs the real deal!

Which books have been on your reading list recently? Also, have you had the time to take in a movie or play? These days, I have an ever-growing reading list and not much time to read for fun! When I have time in between campaign stops and reading briefing papers, I like to relax by reading mystery novels. As for other entertainment, the Hamilton soundtrack has been on “nonstop” since I saw it in New York!

Finally, what would your parting message be for our readers? Keep fighting – I'm with you. We've come so far from the days of Stonewall. But as Floridians know, we still have our work cut out for us. I know it can feel discouraging. But I'm inspired by your efforts to make our country fairer and more equal – whether you're organizing in your community or simply living openly. And I'll proudly fight alongside the LGBT community in Florida and every state to make sure that every American can live up to their full potential, no matter who you are or who you love.

Season 2 Unfortuna tely Ginger Minj was unavailable f o r t h e interview in time to get into last week's magazine, so this week we have two exit interviews: Alyssa Edwards, who was eliminated last week, and Ginger who was eliminated the week before. Let's start off with Ginger who was the first of these “ladies” to get the chop. Week three of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars Season Two featured only a maxi challenge which was a Lip Synch

By Scott Holland

extravaganza saluting the “baddest bitches in her-story.” The contestants were given a character: Alaska (Eve), PhiPhi (Helen of Troy), Ginger (Katherine the Great), Detox (Marie Antoinette), Roxxxy (Eva Perone), Alyssa (Annie Oakley), and Katya (Princess Diana). The runway theme was the future of drag. In the end Alyssa and Detox were the top two and Ginger and Katya were in the bottom. Alyssa won the Lip Synch for Legacy and sent home Ginger.

How has your life changed since you were on Drag Race? Well, there wasn't a lot of time for it to change

between my season and All-Stars. I was only gone for a month in between! But it has been great traveling across the world, and being able to perform with the other girls.

What have been some of your favorite cities to visit as RuPaul Alumni? Houston, Seattle, and my favorite place in the world is London. I would live out my days there pretending to be Harry Potter if I could.

How exciting was it to get called back for All Stars? Did you consider not coming back and if so what made you come back?

Well, I tried to take the fashion aspect just as seriously as the performance aspect. On season seven I thought you just had to be an amazing entertainer, and totally forgot about fashion because it's not really what I do. This time I put effort into it.

Now that you have been eliminated, who do you want to win?

Crazy! At first I did consider not coming back and originally said no. But then I realized it's stupid to squander the opportunity. I'm always changing and evolving so I wanted to showcase that.

Katya. She's been one of my best friends for years.

How did you prepare differently for all stars than you did the first time on the show?

No, look, it's a competition. She was told to make a choice, and she chose.

Are you mad at Alyssa for not eliminating the weakest of the week? If so, what are your plans for revenge?

What's Ahead for Ginger?

into travelling. I never believed or dreamed that I could do this all around the world. It's absolutely wonderful!

I'm coming out with an album that I've been working really hard on for about a year and a half. I also just finished a pilot for a TV show that looks like it could get the greenlight, so that'd be great.

What has been some of your favorite cities to visit as RuPaul Alumni?

For more information on Ginger you can follow her on Social Media at: Facebook.com/ Ginger Minj Official Fan Page ; Twitter.com/TheGingerMinj; or Instagram.com/gingerminj4

How exciting was it to get called back for All Stars? Did you consider not coming back and if so, what made you come back?

Los Angeles always has a special place in my heart. New York is amazing and I love P Town. Also Guam was really cool.

I was very excited. I was in the airport and I started screaming bloody murder. TSA even came over to me. I immediately knew I would do it as I was so thrilled. This was a new opportunity to present myself and do things I didn't do on season 5. As soon as I got home I started designing outfits and getting my wigs together.

How did you prepare differently for all stars than you did the first time on the show? I prepared more mentally. I decided I was going to last more, and worry less and wasn't going to be intimidated by being judged. I decided I was going to dive into the water with no floaty and get into the deep end.

Now that you have been eliminated, who do you want to win? I would like to see Alaska or Katya win, because these 2 are so great and they deliver a solid product. In week 4 of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars season 2 featured only a maxi challenge which was starring in “She-Quels,” parody's of famous movies in pairs. The girls picked their partners and then Ru gave out themes: Phi Phi and Roxxy had “Show Squirrels”; Detox and Katya had “Velma and Weezy”; and Alaska and Alyssa had “What Had Happened to Baby JJ”. The runway look was “Two Looks in One” in honor of Violet Chachki. In the end the top two were Phi Phi and Alaska with Alska winning the Lip Synch for legacy. She had to eliminate one of the bottom three (Roxxxy, Alyssa or Katya) and she chose to eliminate the weakest of the week, Alyssa.

How has your life changed since you were on Drag Race? Drastically. I went from doing drag as a hobby to doing drag as a career. I am fully invested

The look you had in the mirror was fierce and scary, are you planning on taking some revenge? I think I was a little shocked by Phi Phi's comments so that's why I had that look. Stay tuned as I am about to come into that room like a wrecking ball. Ok?

What's Ahead for Alyssa? I just think my book of life is written and it's now being read out loud. I am just enjoying it and going with it.

Is there anything I didn't ask you that you want to talk about? Having this experience is more than just a competition series, it's truly a journey of courageousness and I wasn't to say thank you to all the people that have accepted that. RuPaul's Drag race is a movement and I am truly grateful and humbled to be a part of this.

For more information on Alyssa you can follow her on S o c i a l M e d i a a t : Fa c e b o o k . c o m / A l y s s a Edwards ; Twitter.com/AlyssaEdwards_1; or Instagram.com/alyssaedwards_1

Food For Thought

By Ian Maloney

2426 Wilton Dr.

A

s soon as I heard that there was a famous chef opening a restaurant in Wilton M a n o r s , m y m o u t h s t a r te d watering. I consider myself a bit of a foodie and besides politics, pretty much the only thing my hubby and I watch on TV are cooking shows, so I knew Robyn Almodovar from her recent wins on the hit shows Chopped and Cut Throat Kitchen, as well as from her amazing run on Hell's Kitchen Season 10 where she finished in the top six! Last week, I had a chance to stop in to Chef Almodovar's new restaurant, Palate Party, which kept the same name as her food truck that you may see roaming the streets of South Florida. Almodovar started the food truck back in 2011 and has parlayed its success into a brick and mortar which is located inside of Rumor's on Wilton Drive (2426 Wilton Dr.) in Wilton Manors. My coworker Anthony and I came in for lunch, and honestly, the menu lived up to every expectation I had, and the food itself far outshined what I thought it would be. As soon as we sat down, our waiter brought us menus and a few minutes later Chef Robyn came out and greeted us. Her enthusiasm for this new endeavor was obvious already, as she chatted a bit about the menu. I already had my eyes on a few items so I told her we definitely wanted to

try those, and then she could send out whatever else she wanted us to try. What felt like just a few moments later, our first dish, bacon wrapped dates ($9), arrived. They are stuffed with goat cheese which is creamy and flavorful, along with an almond sliver. They are wrapped in bacon, baked and topped off with a warm, delicious pomegranate balsamic glaze. The bacon cooked perfectly to a crisp and the glaze really marries the flavors adding a bit of tanginess to the rich creamy goat cheese. Chef explained that this dish symbolizes

Robyn Almodovar her time living in Atlanta, where she attended the Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts. Next we tried the BBQ Short Rib Grilled

Bacon Wrapped Dates Cheese ($15) which was far from ordinary. Chef bakes her own multigrain bread and tops it with a four cheese blend, slow cooked short ribs smothered in barbeque sauce, crunchy fried onions and garlic aioli. Generally, the sandwiches are served with fries but she treated us with a side of h e r B r u s s e l Sprouts, I'll get to them in just a minute. Anthony was surprised at how light this sandwich was the BBQ Short Rib Grilled Cheese despite four cheeses and beef. Almodovar told us it was the fresh baked bread that makes all the difference. This is home style cooking at its absolute best, proving that gastro-pub style food doesn't need to be pretentious, just cooked with love. The Brussel Sprouts ($7) are served whole and fried. They are tender on the inside (not mushy) and crispy on the outside, and cooked just right. Before serving, they are tossed in a Thai chili soy sauce that provides a bit of sweet heat (more sweet than heat) and an Asian kick that really pairs well with the bitter bite Brussel Sprouts are known for. Our next surprise followed the Asian theme

that the Brussel Sprouts kicked off. The Pork Belly Steamed Buns ($13) were one of the dishes that first caught my eye on the menu and honestly they are the highlight of all the dishes we tried. Each order contains three giant buns filled with a generous portion of pork belly, which is crispy and not too fatty. Almodovar admitted that she outsources the bun prep, but has been given the recipe so she will be making them in house soon. The pork belly on the other hand is made in house, it is cooked for 11 hours slow and low then wrapped up and frozen to firm up the fat and bind the flavors. Next, it is sliced thinly and f r i e d to give it an amazing crispiness that made me wish for more! The pork belly is t h e n tossed in The Pork Belly Steamed Buns chef's secret Asian sauce. A hoisin glaze is smeared on the bun which is then topped with the belly, some chopped cilantro, and crushed peanuts. I just can't say enough about these steamed buns. South Florida is known for suffering a dearth of good

Food For Thought Asian food, but Almodovar is doing her part to change that! The other menu item that caught my eye was the Southwestern Egg Rolls ($10). Whenever I see them on the menu at a restaurant, I always want to o r d e r them, but often resist for fear t h e y a re going to be served from a box. Re a l i z i n g where I was, I took a chance that these would be b e t t e r Southwestern Egg Rolls t h a n average, and, of course, I wasn't disappointed. Almodovar's take are hand rolled in house and filled with chopped chicken, corn, black beans, peppers, and cilantro and topped with a cilantro lime crema. The southwestern flavors are perfectly done, and the dish is elevated by the crema that really makes you want to get all you can off of the plate. As we were finishing up our meal, Chef Ro b y n c a m e out to check on us with her hands full. She wanted us to try h e r n e w M e a t b a l l Sliders which Meatball Sliders she calls

Pockets of Love ($12).. Instead of using a traditional mini roll like sliders are usually served with, she used hand baked garlic knot type dough that is stuffed with an Italian style meatball. Apparently Almodovar has had a lifelong competition with her mom over who can make the best meatball. I can't judge since I've never tasted her mom's cooking, but I can tell you that Chef is bringing some pretty stiff competition. Moist, flavorful, and topped with a mozzarella, ricotta and grated parmesan cheeses, these balls are perfect- they melt in your mouth!

Deep Fried Bread Pudding Despite being full to the brim, we couldn't leave without tasting the Deep Fried Bread Puddin ($7). Take your idea of bread pudding and throw it out the window. Here, it's chopped into cubes and deep fried and topped with a sweet glaze. This dish was actually one that she made during one of her appearances on the TV show Chopped. The way it is prepared was a shock to me, but once I tasted it, I couldn't stop. There's always room for dessert, right? Palate Party has been open for just about a month, they celebrated their grand opening just last week. They feature a wide variety of gourmet food that has really raised the bar for good food on Wilton Drive. Chef Robyn Almodovar's eclectic background shines through in the menu, and Rumor's has become a must stop for any foody in Wilton Manors. Stop in and tell them that Hotspots sent you, and keep your eye out for Almodovar on your TV, with talent like hers, she is sure to continue representing the finest chefs in South Florida.

GENRE EXCLUSIVA Con Teddy Behr & Adora

El Canto del Colibrí or The Hummingbird´s Song, is a documentary film that tells the story of a group of Latino immigrant fathers who explore their experiences as family members of a LGBT person. Much like the seldom-heard song of the hummingbird, the voices of Latino fathers are rarely heard in addressing LGBTQ issues. This film aims to amplify their voices as they talk about immigration, religion, marriage equality, machismo, culture, and their kid´s process of coming out of the closet. The film is a continuation of the documentary ¨Tres Gotas de Agua¨ (Three Drops of Water) that explores the world of LGBT families from the mother´s point of view. In this film, the creators send us off for a conversation that is as frank as it is intimate and it will surely have you in tears. Social justice, civic responsibility, and LGBTQ acceptance among the, almost always, conservative Latino families are just some of the key points addressed in this chat which highlights the everyday life of our communities that are so culturally and visually rich. The objective of the film is to force a necessary dialogue, to fight rejection and isolation and to build solidarity among Latino parents, their families and community activists. "I want to show that there are Latino immigrant fathers who love their LGBT children unconditionally

and that they reaffirm their love as they share their experiences with us, and that their journey wasn't easy," said Marco CastroBojorquez, the film´s Director and Producer, to theAdvocate inAugust. Through raw, heartfelt testimonies, these families delve deeply into issues of immigration, prejudice, and isolation, while thoughtfully asking questions of their communities, culture, and even their religious beliefs. The result is a powerful lesson on solidarity and humility in a film that both heals and inspires. Castro-Bojorquez is a Mexican immigrant who lives in California where he works as a film maker and as a community educator. He is the Director of Education for Lambda Legal, the oldest organization in the country fighting for equal rights for the LGBTQ community. In an email, he told Hotspots that ¨this film was made to support communities…¨ It´s obvious that the message of El Canto del Colibrí is missing in the community at large, and it is great that there are people who have dedicated themselves to changing minds about the Latino community and how it treats it´s LGBTQ children.

WOODY LET IT GO H

Need Wood

ey Woody, What are the effects of smoking on sexual performance? Do cigarettes light up your sex life, like the ads promise? -- Trying to get my boyfriend to quit Dear Trying: You're better off striking a pose than a light, according to the latest research. In a study conducted in Kentucky (infuriating the state's tobacco growers no doubt) 290 couples were surveyed on sex and smoking (as opposed to smokin' sex, which we deal with regularly in this column). Results showed that nonsmokers got twice the nookie than smokers. Nonsmokers rated their sex lives better, too. They gave it an average of 9 on a 1-10 scale while smokers rated their sex lives at a five. Tell your boyfriend to lose the cigarettes. There are better things to stick in his mouth. Hey, Woody! I'm concerned about my "past" which has been, uhm, colorful. But I'm on the straight and narrow now, looking for real love, unpaid love, if you know what I mean. But I'm depressed about it cuz I figure I'm going to scare off men when they find out about my past. How will I explain it? — Turned my last trick Dear Turned: There is nothing to explain. First of all it's nobody's business. Second of all, a true gentleman won't inquire. Besides,

potential suitors are not interested in your resume, they're interested in your eyes, your mouth, your d!<k, you're a$$, the way you touch them, and the way you talk to them. Congratulations on your new life, by the way. I wouldn't worry about future dating prospects. Just remember when they ask you to whisper the three magic words, they're not "MasterCard or Visa?" Hey Woody! I've seen your column around, and want you to know that there are plenty of guys who do not have these bizarre, deranged sexual "problems." My boyfriend and I are the perfect example. And another thing; If you were this hot sexual pirate you claim to be, you would probably publish your own picture next to your article, and not some random image. All I'm saying is, please gain even the slightest bit of morals. It would give the publication that employs you, as well as the community, a bit more respectability. ---High And Mighty Dear Mighty: Gosh, if we could all just have what you have--a problem-free, hat-in-the-air Doris Day marriage- this world would be a better place. What sh!t; you have the "perfect example" of a problem-free relationship? My bet is that you stalked your boyfriend, he panicked, gave in, and now he's chained somewhere in the basement. That's what guys like you usually mean by having the "perfect" relationship. Second, I never said I was hot. I am beyond heat. That's why I don't publish my picture with the column. It would vaporize the paper. Besides, there'd be too many freaks like you throwing their star-f#$%ing a$$es at me. And if you haven't figured it out, pinhead, my picture isn't the only thing about me that's not in the column. Neither is my name. It's a pen name.
