Afterwards, we went down to Miami to celebrate the third anniversary of Floppy Rooster which featured adult video star Hunter Vance. Sunday, it was all about the 40th anniversary of Pride Fort Lauderdale and the first year it was on the beach. To say it was an overwhelming success would be an understatement. Congrats to the board for an AMAZING job with attendance being estimated at over 40,000 people.

“There was something burning inside that said, ‘Right, you can’t hide it anymore. You’ve got to be free and be true to yourself and let it go out there’.” DANNY WATTS, 37, British race car driver, coming out as gay. Watts won the legendary Le Mans 24 Hour Endurance Race in 2010 but has since retired.
“Just by staring at her for a period of time, one can rid themselves of the plague of homosexualism.” PAT ROBERTSON, Christian conservation leader, referring to the beauty of First Lady Melania Trump.
“To love another is not about living struggle-free or never experiencing hurt or loss, but to fully and deeply open our hearts to one another without fear.” CHRIS SALVATORE, gay Eating Out star, who had moved his ailing 89-year-old neighbor into his NYC apartment so he could better care for her. Norma passed away to pneumonia last week.
“Well, I’ll give the Vice channel one thing: all of their food-related shows feature hosts that are all sloppy looking and don’t appear to practice good hygiene, so although the actual food looks delicious, watching them consume it takes the hunger right out of you. It’s like a subliminal diet.” ADAM COHEN, West Palm Beach blogger and social commentator
OTHER CHATTER “Rescission of the Obama Administration’s guidelines and protections for transgender students is an appalling and devastating action by the Departments of Justice and Education. This administration, and this President, has vowed to be an ally of the LGBTQ community; yet this action is a direct contradiction to that declaration.” MATT THORN, executive director of Outserve (OS-SLDN), the nation’s largest non-profit, legal services, advocacy and policy organization dedicated to LGBT equality in America’s military, responding to the rescinding of guidelines which allowed transgender students to use the bathroom that matches their gender identities. SASHA LORDS [exclusive interview] By Scott Holland Photo: Dario Krakower
What was the irst drag show you saw? Tell us about the experience... The irst Drag show I saw was Gina DiAngelo at The Coliseum in Fort Lauderdale. My experience was like a movie. I was with a girlfriend, it was my irst time at a gay club and the music changed, all of the sudden they were playing a Spanish song that I knew by Gloria Trevi. I got so excited and was thinking to myself I can’t believe they are playing this song at this club! So as I’m there jamming out in front of my friend, getting my life to this song, I turn to my right and I see Gina, I turn back to my friend and tell her I’ll be right back . I then make my way to the front and just watch her performance. I was amazed When did you decide you wanted to do drag and when did you realize it would be a profession? I decided I wanted to do drag after my irst attempt at it. By that time, I was in love with drag. I was obsessed with Vegas Dion, TP Lords and Erika Norell. I would look at pictures on MySpace of different drag queens and after that irst time something inside me said you are going to be part of that world, you’re going to be one of them. Now, as far as really knowing it was going to be a profession, well it would have to be after a few years of being in the game and having the honor of changing my last name to “Lords.”
Who is your drag mother and who is your favorite queen other than your drag mother and why? My drag mothers are TP Lords & Erika Norell, even though Erika and I joke about it and call her my father. My favorite drag queen other than my mothers must be Vegas Dion. She was my irst idol as far as drag is concerned. The way she transformed and executed the art of drag always made me fall in love with this art form. She is not around as often anymore, but still remains a ierce queen, baby! What’s your favorite number to perform and why? Oh man, that’s a hard one but I’ll have to say Crazy in Love by Beyoncé. It just makes me come alive, and helps me showcase how I feel about love and entertaining What’s the best thing that has happened
UEENS WE
Why We Love Her!
She is such a pretty boy queen. She has amazing stage presence. She continually improves her craft and is not afraid to take chances. How can you not love someone who loves drag so much!
to you in drag? The best thing to happen to me in drag would be getting to work with some of my best friends who are also like family to me. Nothing tops the experiences I’ve had with these individuals, both on stage and off. What differentiates you from other queens? I think what differentiates me is that my goals and dreams are not only for myself but for other queens like me. My love for drag goes beyond myself. I love helping others and one day I hope to create music and shows for future queens. What does the future hold? Well that’s always unknown, but I plan on inishing school and having my own entertainment company one day. I also want to make music. I don’t plan on slowing down anytime soon!

AN EVENING WITH
LARRY KRAMER WORLD AIDS MUSEUM CELEBRATES 30 YEARS OF ACT UP By Ian Maloney
On Friday, March 10, The World AIDS Museum and Education Center presents “An Evening with Larry Kramer” at The Sunshine Cathedral (1480 SW 9th Ave, Fort Lauderdale). Kramer is an 81-year-old playwright and activist who was on the front lines during the early days of the AIDS crisis. He was there when President Regan wouldn’t even speak about AIDS and he taught us all that we need to fight for our own lives if we want to be saved. No one would do it for us.
INTERVIEW 5 Questions
1 Q:
HOTSPOTS: You were at the “ground zero” of the AIDS epidemic, and you played a role in creating both ACT UP and The Gay Men’s Health Crisis. With the help of fighters like you, we have come so far in the fight to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS. What are some of the accomplishments that you are most proud of ? A: Kramer: I am more proud of ACT UP than of anything I have ever done or written.
2 Q:
With anti-LGBT forces back in control in Washington, do you see a renewed call for organizations like ACT UP to put pressure on lawmakers? A: The ight for our rights requires and has required and will always require constant 24/7 vigilance. The ight is never over.
3 Q:
Would you share with us any ideas that you have about taking the ight forward so that we don’t get complacent and lose the gains of the past 30 years? A: What has to be done is not rocket science. See above response to question 2.
4 Q:
How autobiographical was “The Normal Heart?” Is Ned really Larry? A: No comment
5 Q:
What really pisses you off these days? A: Gay people who don’t fight for their rights. Tickets to An Evening with Larry Kramer presented by the World AIDS Museum and Education Center are $25. For more information or purchase tickets, visit WorldAIDSMuseum.org.
Kramer graduated from Yale University in 1957 with a degree in English but his time at the Ivy League school was not all sunshine and roses. After a suicide attempt because he felt like the only gay person on campus, he was determined to explore his sexuality and, according to the New York Times, “fight for gay people’s worth.” He was nominated for an Oscar for his screenplay adaptation of Women In Love by D.H. Lawrence and in 1978, he went on to pen the novel Faggots, which followed the main character (said to be loosely biographical) as he sought love while searching through druginfested trendy discos and clubs. In 1981, Kramer invited a group of gay men to his apartment where a doctor told them that about an illness that was killing gay men in New York. That group eventually became the Gay Men’s Health Crisis, which was the first organization fighting to find a cure for what would later be called HIV/AIDS. He was blunt and confrontational and he faced a backlash because of it. His adversarial style paid off by getting more media attention for the crisis, but it was personally costly. After his ouster from GMHC, Kramer went on to found the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power or ACT UP, an organization that encouraged civil disobedience to make the point that something needed to be done to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS. He is perhaps most widely known for his play The Normal Heart which opened Off Broadway at the famed Public Theatre (think Hamilton) and has gone on to be produced hundreds of times across the globe, including a triumphant run on Broadway just a few years ago. It was most recently made into an HBO movie starring Mark Ruffalo and Julia Roberts and directed by American Horror Story and Glee’s Ryan Murphy. Kramer is quite a force to be reckoned with and he has been fighting for the gay community since long before it was socially acceptable to come out as an openly gay person in society. It is a pleasure to present this Hotspots exclusive interview with Larry Kramer before his presentation at the Sunshine Cathedral on March 10.

Drunken Dragon
9. Drunken Dragon 1424 Alton Rd I am going out on a limb here, but I am pretty sure there is nothing like Drunken Dragon in Miami Beach. Located in a nondescript strip mall on Alton Road, the sign on top says Market, but inside is a Korean oasis serving up delicious meats that you grill yourself at your own mini grill. Think DIY Hibachi, at least some chef isn’t going to hit you in the eye with a hot shrimp! Set up like speakeasy from the bygone days of prohibition, Drunken Dragon is a hip modern take on Korean

AND EAT IT TOO?
1. Red meat is higher in saturated fat and cholesterol which can clog arteries and lead to heart disease and strokes. 2. Grilling meat is a waist-line friendly cooking method, but it can result in harmful compounds called heterocyclic amines (HCA’s) forming in the cooked meat which have been linked to cancer. 3. Processed red meats like bacon, hot dogs and most packaged lunch meats are loaded with saturated fat, bad cholesterol, sodium, nitrates and other preservatives which have been linked to increased risk of colon and pancreatic cancers. Bottom Line: Two 3-4 ounce portions of red meat per week is considered healthy. Avoid processed meats and fatty cuts of beef like prime rib and rib-eye steak. Consume lean cuts such as flank steak, New York strip and tender loin. Trim off excess fat, grill or broil properly and enjoy!

oTHE DOWNSIDE OF EATING
FITNESS/HEALTH
1. Red meat is a great source of vitamins like B6, B12, and Vitamin D which a body needs to function properly. 2. Meat, especially grass fed beef or lamb, is higher in omega-3 fatty acids which keep cholesterol levels in the good ranges. 3. Red meat is a rich source of protein. If you’re active in sports or working out regularly, your body needs steady and convenient sources of protein like red meat, fish, chicken and lean pork. The International Sports Sciences Association recommends .8 to 1 gram of protein per pound of lean body mass.

BEFORE NIGHT FALLS SE ESTRENA EN MIAMI El opera sigue la historia del poeta cubano Reynaldo Arenas
Photo: Poet Reynaldo Arenas
Con Adora y Teddy Behr
124 | Hotspots.LGBT

Elliot Madore
debuts as Reinaldo Arenas at the Florida Grand Opera
Adora: Teddy, did you see that Miami’s Florida Grand Opera is producing an opera on Reynaldo Arenas, the gay Cuban poet? Arenas came to the US in the Mariel boat lift after having been jailed and harassed for his openly Gay poetry. The show starts March 18, at the Arsht Center and has the same title as the movie by Julian Schnabel: ‘Before Night Falls” We’re going! Teddy Behr: Yes. I remember the movie with Johnny Depp and Javier Bardem. It really showed how impossible it was for an openly gay and dissident poet like Arenas to stay in Cuba. To me it sounds like drama, it sounds beautiful.
Adora: The opera was written by Jorge Martin and directed by David Gately. It has already been presented at the Fort Worth Opera and it’s headed to Miami. A lot of people don’t know how anti-gay the Cuban government really was or how bad it was for the LGBT community, especially for the transgender community. Teddy Behr: It’s a great time to retell his story; Cuba’s trying to reform and has made some progress, but Venezuela and Ecuador and other countries in our hemisphere are showing signs of cracking down on free expression and universal human rights. Arenas was really
courageous and his poetry transcends the “gay experience,” it’s about the freedom to feel, to be, and to speak out…and the way sometimes governments feel threatened by that free expression. Adora: When I was a kid in Havana in the ’80’s, you could go to jail for dressing in drag, so yeah the government saw a lot of stuff as threatening to its order. Of course, openly criticizing the government was even more serious, and Arenas’ manuscripts had to be smuggled out of Cuba where luckily they got published in Paris. I didn’t know Reynaldo but I love his story, and I love the way it shows the hypocrisy that government is capable of, and how dangerous it can be to question it.
Teddy Behr: Performances in Miami are March 18-25; there are a total of 5 performances including matinees. I just found out that the Arsht has opera tickets starting at $19, so it’s not as expensive as I thought opera had to be….
Adora: That’s great Teddy, but we’re getting front row center seats…AREN’T WE??

NEED WOOD
By Woody Miller
BEING
SINGLE
H
ey Woody! I’ve been in a committed relationship for three years now and I can’t tell you how tired I am of all my single friends complaining that they’re single. “I don’t understand why I’m still single,” they’ll whine. Well, I don’t know either, especially the friends that have everything going for them. So tell me, Woody, why are there so many good-looking, bright gay guys with lots to offer that are “single against their will?” I want to know so the next time somebody asks me I’ll have something to say. — Married and loving it
Dear Married: Great. Another letter from somebody living in a g@ddamned love story. Thanks for lording it over us. Too bad we don’t know each other. You’d experience the full effect of my life’s philosophy—“If you can’t have a happy home, wreck one.” There are lots of reasons for being single. The best one, in my book, is because you want to be. But we’re not talking about *those* people. We’re talking about people who don’t like being single and want to put a stop to it. Anyway, here are the three major reasons single guys give for being single and the real meaning behind them: 1) “I’m too independent.” Translation: “I’m a selish prick.” 2) ”I don’t have time for a boyfriend.” Translation: “I’m downloading so much p@rn my ISP thinks I’m a priest.”
3) ”I’m not ready to settle down yet.” Translation: “Nobody’s asked me out in three years.” So much for why single people think they’re single. Here’s why Woody thinks they’re single: They’re making wrong choices. Wrong choice #1: Staying in. If you want somebody to put out you’ve gotta put something in. Like time. Go out—bars, functions, volunteering, sports teams, the works. Wrong choice #2: Doing it alone. The hunt should be done in packs. Get a group of friends that regularly do things. You’ll have more fun when things go right and you’ll have more support when they go wrong. Wrong choice #3: Believing that the right guy is out there. What a scarcity mentality that is. Listen to me, girlie-men. There are PLENTY of “right” guys out there. The world is illed with kind, decent men who’ll treat you right and you shouldn’t be discouraged just because I’m not one of them. Wrong choice #4: Believing that guys just aren’t attracted to you. Believe the truth: You’re putting out energy that doesn’t attract guys. Change the energy and your underwear will come off more often. Being single, even if you don’t want to be, is a choice. In becoming aware that you’ve made that choice (namely, by choosing to believe in things that aren’t true) you have the power to change it. Change your mind and it’ll change your life.
