t the one-year mark of a day that shall live in infamy, Centaur Entertainment released one of the most important bene it albums ever created – the Of icial Pulse Orlando Gay Days Bene it Album, which we recently listened to and love! What happened on Sunday, June 12, 2016 was a horri ic day in Orlando and in our nation. Pulse Nightclub in Orlando became the site of the deadliest mass shooting by a single gunman on U.S. soil, resulting in the untimely deaths of 49 innocent souls. On May 4, 2017, onePULSE Foundation unveiled plans for the creation of a permanent memorial and announced the formation of a national Board of Trustees, including the establishment of a signi icant fund. This fund will support the construction and maintenance of the memorial, community grants to care for the survivors and victims' families, an educational program to promote amity among all segments of society, endowed scholarships for each of the 49 angels and ultimately a museum showcasing the historic artifacts and stories from the event. Our goal is to create a sanctuary of hope around this tragic day in our history that honors the 49 innocent lives that were taken, the 68 injured victims, the families that were forever changed, survivors from inside the club, the rapid responders and healthcare professionals. Enter Centaur, a Grammy nominated record label, and also the largest LGBT record label. Centaur decided to produce a bene it album to help fund the onePULSE Foundation and memorial, and got the approval of Pulse owner, Barbara Poma.

Centaur reached out to artists, record labels, DJs, remixxers and more to create a coalition of people and companies to donate their time, services and love to an album to achieve this goal. One Hundred percent (100%) of proceeds from the sale of this album will go directly to the onePULSE Foundation. “We wanted to send the message that we as an LGBT community, and we as a nation, can and will rise up, remember the 49 innocent angels, and return to the dance loor unafraid and with our angels by our sides,” said Nick De Biase, Centaur's president and the album's producer. “Love always conquers hate!” De Biase reached out to the owner of Pulse, Barbara Poma, and the two shared a heartfelt and tearful conversation. “Centaur understood the dif icult road we were traveling, “ said Poma. “On behalf of our Board of Trustees, we thank everyone you for your support. This is a de ining mission and healing initiative for those involved and we are grateful to ind supporters who share our vision and understand the sacred responsibility to which we have been entrusted.” The special songs on this bene it album take on a new life and an even deeper meaning when heard and listened to in light of the Pulse tragedy. DJ Randy Bettis, who helped to compile these songs, carefully crafted them into a continuous mix. Even if you are not a fan of dance or pop music, buy a copy of the Pulse Orlando Bene it Album and listen to it. We dare you not to be changed! Available on www.TheOutClub.com, iTunes, Spotify, Beatport, Amazon, Google and many more!

This August, thousands of gay men from around the globe will flock to the sun drenched Jersey Shore for the three-day, eleven-party, and 14 DJ festival known as Ascension Party. “Prepare to be turned ovah like a fat rat,” says DJ Lina, who launches the weekend on Friday, August 4, spinning the VIP cocktail party. “The wonderful part about Ascension is each DJ brings their own unique style so everyone gets what they need.” Following Lina’s event will be the Ascension Underwear Party with world renowned DJ Eddie Martinez. “My style is sexy and fun with

lots of energy,” he explains. “My sets always include my original work, private mixes and edits, along with my own personal flare.” The fun continues Saturday with the weekend’s main event, the Ascension Beach Party. International DJs Dani Toro and Hansel will be spinning the beats. “Right now, my favorite producers are Tony Moran, Paulo, Joe Gauthreaux, Tommy Love, Mauro Mozart, Tom Stephan, Thomas Solvert and, of course, myself,” laughs Dani Toro. “I’m currently playing Zhana Roiya’s “Lick Me Up”

and Katy Perry’s “Chained To The Rhythm” a lot, but we’ll have to see in August which songs will be crowd favorites.” After the beach party, superstar DJ Paulo takes the booth for the Saturday Night Celebration. Clubbers love his Tribal/Progressive beats layered with big vocals. On Sunday, partiers will once again break out the Speedos for the Ascension Pool Party. Drop dead gorgeous DJ Dan Slater plans to mix commercial, classic and underground tracks like Brian Justin Crum’s “Show Me Love feat. Toy Armada & DJ Grind” and Ultra Nate’s “Desire ‘2K17”. Then DJ Joe Gauthreaux takes the stage, spinning his big room beats at the grand finale Closing Party. He promises, “It’s going to be a ride like no other!”

The transformation of Asbury Park has been incredible. Major investments in the boardwalk area and the city over the past few years has completely transformed the downtown. The host hotel for Ascension, The Asbury, opened last summer after a 50 million dollar renovation. It was voted Best New Hotel in the U.S. in 2016. “Ascension is going to bring thousands

of visitors from all over the tri-state area as well as the world to Asbury,” continues von Kuersteiner. “It will be a wonderful opportunity to showcase the local businesses to thousands of new visitors.” Ascension Party is a charity event, donating 100% of net proceeds to the LGBTQ community. Over one million dollars has been donated to over 40 different organizations to date. The LGBTQ community of Asbury Park will be the major benefactor for Ascension 2017. “2017 is a new chapter for Ascension and we are pulling out all the stops,” promises von Kuersteiner. “Once again, we aim to give guests a fun-in-the-sun experience they will always remember.”

Ascension Party takes place Friday, August 4 through Sunday, August 6 at Asbury Park. The host hotel is The Asbury Hotel (210 5th Avenue, Asbury Park, NJ). Visit ascensionparty.com for ticket information. q

“We are thrilled to bring Ascension back to the states this year,” says Ascension Party founder Eric von Kuersteiner. The festival launched in 2006 on Fire Island Pines, where it continued annually until 2014. For the last two summers Ascension has taken place in Mykonos. “We brought on a new partner for the weekend who brought a lot of fresh ideas including the idea to take the party to the beautiful beaches on the Jersey Shore,” he explains.

What is TRUVADA for PrEP ?

TRUVADA for PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a prescription medicine that is used together with safer sex practices to help reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 through sex. This use is only for HIV-negative adults who are at high risk of getting HIV-1. To help determine your risk of getting HIV-1, talk openly with your healthcare provider about your sexual health. Ask your healthcare provider if you have questions about how to prevent getting HIV. Always practice safer sex and use condoms to lower the chance of sexual contact with body fluids. Never reuse or share needles or other items that have body fluids on them.

You must get tested to make sure that you do not already have HIV-1. Do not take TRUVADA to reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 unless you are confirmed to be HIV-negative. u Many HIV-1 tests can miss HIV-1 infection in a person who has recently become infected. I

What did you do with the $100,000 you won?

I haven’t spent it all yet, but I mostly invested back into my drag and my community. One of the first things I did, was pay taxes and it’s a lot more then you think.

q

What’s the most expensive purse you bought since winning?

I don’t have a lot of expensive purses. The whole gimmick is that they are not expensive. Although a fan bought me a Michael Kors bag, which is more generous then I deserve.

q

What has been your favorite event/city/venue you traveled to? I really liked Austin Texas a lot, and I also loved Rio in Brazil and Portland Oregon.

40 | Hotspots.LGBT

q

Do you have any advice for Sasha, now that she has been crowned? Honestly, I don’t. If I can do, she can do it. But the best advice I can give anyone is when people give you advice consider the source!

You made a movie, Cherry Pop, tell us about how you got cast and the filming of the movie?

q

q

t’s been just over a year since we sat down with Bob The Drag Queen, right after he was crowned the winner of Season 8 of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Since then he has traveled the world performing. A few months back I saw him as the hostess one of Murray and Peters RuPaul’s productions at the Parker Playhouse and I was incredibly impressed with his skills. When I found out that Bob has a few projects in the works, I thought it was time to sit down and catch up and tell his Florida fans what the future holds for him.

The director, Assaad Yacoub, would sneak into Stonewall Inn when he was under age and beg us drag queens to be in his short film. He asked me many times and I said no, as I was busy. The original short film idea was picked up and turned into a feature film, and eventually I said yes. The filming went well, except for Detox who drank a lot on set. However, she was oddly composed. It’s almost as if she has built up a tolerance to alcohol. Latrice was great to work with, I love that bitch, she is FAB! It’s an independent film, so the we filmed the entire movie in about 3 ½ weeks

q

You also have your first stand-up comedy special, Suspiciously Large Woman: Bob The Drag Queen, which will premiere next week at Outfest 2017. How did this come about and are you proud of the outcome?

I am very excited about it coming out, as I am a stand up comedian. I have actually been doing stand-up longer then doing drag. Making people laugh is my favorite thing in the world. I hope this is one of many stand up specials for me. To have both my projects being shown at Outfest is unbelievable exciting.

q

What other projects do you have in the works? These two have taken up most of my time, as I produced the standup special myself. However, did squeeze in some time to collaborate with Lux de Ville for a Purse First Collection that is now available to purchase at LuxdeVille.com.

For more information on Bob The Drag Queen you can go to his website: BobTheDragQueen. com or on Instagram.com/ BobTheDragQueen where she has 554,000 followers!

They are known for their specialty nail care services, including their signature Organic Green Tea Lemon Grass Spa Pedicure. Those looking for a facial can choose between their classic European facial, or their specialized anti-aging facial or even a Microdermabrasion peel. As they are about to celebrate their 5th anniversary, I thought it was a good time to sit down with owner, Tommy Le, and catch up.

Tommy Le

What are you doing for the 5th Anniversary?

We are celebrating the anniversary through the months of July and August and have a few specials. They are: When you come with a friend to get your special pedicures (Organic Green Tea Spa Pedi, Signature Spa Pedi, Mojito Spa Pedi, Peppermint Signature Spa Pedi or Lavish Paraffin Spa Pedi) you receive $3 off (Mon-Thurs only); 10% off summer body wax, and $5 off all of their 60 min+ facials.

Why should someone choose Lavish Manors over other salons?

We always treat our clients with the respect and welcome them into our salon. Our technicians evaluate each person individually to offer them the best possible service(s). Sanitation, disinfecting and sterilization are paramount to our process. A dental grade autoclave is used to steam sterilize all metal instruments. Your health, safety and wellbeing are primary concerns for us at Lavish Manors Spa. In addition, Lavish Manors has a true spa feeling and we offer complimentary wine or beverages.

What does the future hold for Lavish Manors? What made you decide to open a salon?

I have always had a passion about Beauty and helping people look their best, and have been in the beauty business for quite a long time. I have another salon in Miami Beach.

At the end of the year we are expanding to put in a barber service for men and a hair salon for the ladies. Then we will truly be full service salon.

Why did you choose Wilton Manors?

I googled Wilton Manors and there was no Manicure/Pedicure/Spa catering to the area, so I felt that Wilton Manors would be the perfect spot for my next salon.

Did the salon come out as you originally envisioned?

Actually it came out exactly as I had it planned in my head.

How do you go about hiring your technicians?

I do intensive interviews and watch how they represent themselves and test how technical they are. I have to make sure that their personalities will fit in with this environment.

Lavish Manors is located at 2717 N. Dixie Highway in Wilton Manors and is open Monday-Saturday 9:30 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. and Sundays 11a.m. - 6p.m. For more information call them at (954) 396-6245 or visit their website at: NailSalon-fortlauderdale.com. Hotspots.LGBT | 49

The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County is proud to announce the return of Slava’s Snowshow, a critically-acclaimed and timeless theatrical spectacle often described as a cross between Cirque du Soleil and Blue Man Group, as its marquee presentation for summer 2017. After two record-breaking runs in 2008 and 2013, creator and renowned international artist, Slava Polunin, and his talented cast of clowns return to Miami to wow fans with their magical show starting July 12 in the Center’s Ziff Ballet Opera House. Slava’s Snowshow will play Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m., Sundays at 7 p.m., with additional matinee shows on Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. Slava’s Snowshow is an awe-inducing theatrical experience and a profoundly moving spectacle full of wondrous images, delightful comedy, haunting music, and snow—lots and lots of snow. “This show is poetic in its story telling and brings you back to your childhood,” says Liz Wallace, vice president of programming at the Arsht Center. Created by Slava, the original Cirque clown genius, Slava’s Snowshow has “stage effects

that are dazzling” (Daily Mail) and a “finale that blows you away!” (Mail on Sunday). Winner of London’s Olivier Award for Best Entertainment and 2005 Drama Desk Award recipient for Unique Theatrical Experience, Slava’s Snowshow has been hailed by The Independent as “an unmistakably unique, unmissable comedy masterpiece.” Slava’s Snowshow is the creation of Russian-born Slava Polunin. Inspired by the most famous mime artists of all time, including Charlie Chaplin, Marcel Marceau and Engibaro, Slava has dedicated his life since the age of 17 to re-claiming and reestablishing the art and craft of the true clown. After founding his own theater company “Litsedei” in 1979, Slava has taken clowning out of the circus and into the streets, and from there to major theaters around the world. Tickets to Slava’s Snowshow are $30, $55 and $75*. Tickets are available through the Adrienne Arsht Center Box Office by calling (305) 949-6722, or online at www. arshtcenter.org. Summer Fitness Survival u Guide ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

R

by Tom Bonanti

emember this summer to take some time to relax and chill. Take advantage of the slower pace at work to fine tune your workouts at the gym. Or maybe you need to take a sabbatical from lifting and pursue some other outdoor fitness activities like swimming or skateboarding. Pack your sunscreen, take a cooler of your favorite iced beverage with you and revel in the events and action ahead. Here are a few of what I refer to as my top summer fitness tips.

92 | Hotspots.LGBT

uStretching

1. Remember that stretching is a vital component of overall fitness. Stretch vigorously and for several minutes before doing any cardio routine like cycling, running and swimming. For weight training, stretch lightly before working out, and more between sets and after your workout. 2. A cocktail or glass of wine are a delight around the pool or cabana, but overdoing it can pack on the pounds, deplete your energy and prove fatal to your workouts.

3. Modalities like hydro-therapy, massage, and acupuncture, etc. can aid your fitness lifestyle by relieving pain, speeding recovery and adding to your overall well being. Treat yourself this summer! 4. A professional massage can relax sore tight muscles, lower blood pressure, increase circulation and moisturize your skin. 5. Summer colds are a bitch. Never work-out with a fever, it's counter-productive, stay home and get well. 6. Music can rev you up and motivate your workouts – if your gym is playing tired tunes, then bring your own. 7. Carry a clean towel with you to the gym and a few anti-bacterial wipes so that you can keep equipment clean for yourself and others.

9. Beginning at age 25 most people begin to lose about a half a pound of muscle per year. Regular and progressive weight training helps maintain and build lean muscle. 10. Consistency and regularity at the gym add up to success at achieving your goals. Even if your workout isn't stellar, it's still better to do something than nothing. 11. To jump start your fat-burning, try 20 minutes of cardio, i.e. treadmill, elliptical on an empty stomach first thing in the morning. But make sure to eat breakfast soon after this and always before your major workout. 12. Before trying any new supplement for weight loss or body building make sure you research it. Check with your physician before trying it. 13. Good nutrition, weight training (free weights and machines) and cardio-vascular training (running, swimming, cycling) are the three elements of any sound program. 14. Do some core training at work by replacing your regular office chair with an exercise ball. Instead of a bench do some dumbbell military presses, arm curls, etc. on a ball in order to really work your core. 15. The warmer weather is better for joints and muscles while

exercising, just don't overdo it, use sunscreen and chug water. 8. Stay hydrated throughout the day and during your work-outs. Chug water regularly, don't wait until you are thirsty. Sports drinks contain too much sugar‌good old H2O is tops.

BETSY DEVOS BY D’ANNE WITKOWSKI

If you’re a school administrator, a teacher, or even a whole school district and you want to assert your right to discriminate against some of your students FOR REASONS, you’re in luck! The Education Department under Betsy DeVos ain’t gonna stop you. (Unless you’re against white Christians probably.) This is especially true if you want to discriminate against transgender students. The Education Department recently dropped cases in Ohio and elsewhere

involving transgender students being harassed and denied bathroom access basically saying, “This isn’t our problem.” You’ll recall that under Obama the Education Department issued guidelines to schools about how to handle transgender students so that their dignity is respected and their right to an education is not trampled upon. But under Trump and DeVos, however, the Education Department ain’t care. Needless to say, those who support trans

students are alarmed by the Department’s shrugging off the issue. Shannon Minter of the National Center for Lesbian Rights told the Washington Post, “They have just sent a message to schools that it’s open season on transgender students.”

whether such complaints were “symptomatic of a broader problem, in part by examining at least three years of past complaint data.” In other words, if a student complains that he or she was sexually assaulted at school, the Education Department felt

In other words, it’s a pretty clear signal that the Trump administration has zero interest in hearing some transgender kid bitching about having to pee in a bucket in the janitor’s closet or something. Suck it up, buttercup, as Trump supporters like to say right before they head out to protest against Shakespeare. But it’s not just trans students that DeVos wants to abandon. Civil rights are such a drag, after all. What do they do besides get in the way of privatizing America’s education system so that rich assholes can get richer? The Education Department’s office of civil rights is so over crybaby civil rights wanters. According to the Washington Post, the head of the civil rights office “has directed lawyers to narrow the scope of investigations into sexual assault and discriminatory school discipline policies.” What does this mean and how does it differ from what the Obama administration was doing? Well, under Obama the Education Department took students complaints about serious issues, well, seriously, and investigated

like they should probably find out if this was an isolated incident or a pattern of wider abuse. Under DeVos’s leadership, however, they’re so busy trying to find ways to make education into a for-profit enterprise that they can’t be bothered with systemic civil rights abuses at school. Ugh. Civil rights don’t make anybody rich. Of course, the department claims that this whole “don’t look into civil rights complaints too deeply” policy is to alleviate a troublesome backlog of cases. And while it’s true that a backlog of cases is a problem, their solution isn’t to hire the personnel needed to get these cases examined. Their solution is to simply stop looking. In a press release, Sherrilyn Ifill, president of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, said the Education Dept. was abdicating its “responsibility to protect the rights and dignity of our nation’s vulnerable children during the most crucial years of their lives, threatening not only to stall progress on racial, gender and sexual orientation equality in schools, but to undo it altogether.” As is the plan, of course. MAGA ’til you puke.

Under DeVos’s leadership, however, they’re so busy trying to find ways to make education into a for-profit enterprise that they can’t be bothered with systemic civil rights abuses at school. Ugh. Civil rights don’t make anybody rich.

SuperSongstress Lady Gaga Won’t be Back; American Horror Show hires Tenn Wolf’s Colton Haines Despite popular rumor and expectations, gigatistar Lady Gaga will not be returning to the hit FXNow series American Horror Story in its seven season reboot “Ambidexterity.” Gaga (real name: Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta) has appeared on the last two seasons of the series, igniting an acting career for the recording superstar. Setting the record straight via Instagram, executive producer and co-creator Ryan Murphy said “’AHS’ Season 7 will star vets Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters and Cheyenne Jackson. Newcomers include Billy Eichner, Colton Haynes, and Adina Porter.” To add to the publicity buildup for the series, Murphy added a freakish picture to keep fans guessing on this year’s theme.

GAY COUPLE GET SERIES PILOT ON HGTV

Newly married thirty-something couple PJ and Thomas McKay have shot the half-hour show “Down to the Studs,” the pilot for a new home restoration series on HGTV. The heavily accented pair rely on their construction and design skills as well as beefcake bodies in the show shot in Thomas hometown of Cleveland, TN. The pair, along with Thomas’s sister Sydney and PJ’s pal Tania, used Thomas’ childhood home as the first real estate transformation, giving the gay couple an extra personal incentive to make the restoration a designer’s dream. According to HGTV, the show is “based out of the booming real estate market of Chattanooga as PJ and Thomas use their design and renovation skills to improve their hometown, one flip at a time.” Not mentioned was the fact that the pair work shirtless which has improved the show’s ratings, both gay and straight.

Department of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos receives reprimand from 34 Democratic Senators Department of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos was on the receiving end of criticism from 34 Democratic members of the United States Senate who lambasted the billionaire for her association with a known anti-LGBT hate group in addition to her department’s efforts to eliminate or lessen civil rights enforcement for LGBT students. “You claim to support civil rights and oppose discrimination, but your actions belie your assurances,” the senators wrote to DeVos. “In testimony before the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, you attempted to distance yourself from your family’s giving to organizations such as the Family Research Council, which promote intolerant views of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and gender non-conforming Americans and others. Yet, on June 15, 2017, the Family Research Council participated in an official event on engaging fathers in students’ education at the Department.” In particular, the letter pointed to DeVos’ DOE’s move to rollback Obama-era directive on transgender students. “There is no more serious responsibility of the Department than to ensure consistent, vigorous enforcement of civil rights laws and protections for all students,” the letter concluded. “The Department must fulfill that responsibility and work tirelessly to promote equality, opportunity, and an environment free of discrimination for all our children.”

Mister Sister changes name after Vermont protests Gay bar owner Craig McGaughan thought he was being witty when he announced via the internet that his new club would be named Mister Sister last March. “I thought it would be all inclusive,” he said. The Pride Center of Vermont disagreed, and called the name “disparaging” to transgender women.

“I realize now that I mistakenly listened to the fight rather than the pain,” Since the bar opened last winter, it has been involved in a bitter controversy. McGaughan attempted to placate the group with contributions. “Sadly, we’ve had donations rejected from Pride Center of Vermont and Vermont People With AIDS Coalition due to our name.” According to his Facebook post, rather than continue to fight over the bar’s name, McGaughan changed it. Mister Sister is now The Bridge Club, a nod to nearby Winooski Bridge as well as recognizing “the camaraderie and necessity in building bridges,” he said on Facebook. “I realize now that I mistakenly listened to the fight rather than the pain,” McGaughan added. “My wish is that we can all forgive and move forward,” McGaughan continued. “Nothing good came from the fighting. No one won here.”

NEED WOOD

A

SIZEABLE COMPLAINT By Woody Miller

H

ey Woody, My flaccid d--k is quite small, and is terrible advertising for my hard d-k, which is nicely average, but a tad skinny. My flaccid d--k’s size provoked incredible teasing and emotional abuse in summer camp starting in the swimming pool changing room at age 5—“Look, he doesn’t have a penis, is he a girl?” And then it resurfaced again at ages 11 through my first year of college with equally brutal comments (I remember one guy, he was so abusive, he used to yell out “your d--k is so tiny, it could fit through the top of a Coke bottle).” Despite years of therapy, these experiences have left indelible wounds. To have them reinforced in the gay locker rooms, nude beaches, etc. has been a real disappointing aspect to being out and seeking sexual fulfillment. People who seem interested in me clothed, seem to dismiss me when they see my small flaccid d--k. I’ve also had sexual partners spontaneously gasp in disappointment when they first see me naked (if I’m not immediately erect) or after I ejaculate when they see how small my d--k becomes after I cum. One close non-sexual friend, who I would love to be sexual with, recently told me that he can only get aroused by big d--ks. He said he heard from an old boyfriend of mine that I had a small d--k. And then with embarrassed sensitivity and honesty this close non-sexual friend said he’d otherwise be interested in dating me, but he couldn’t be sexual with me or

consider a relationship because of my d--k size. He apologized profusely, but said he knew himself too well. I have been friends with this man for several years. He is very sensitive and self-aware, educated, professional, popular, charming, mature, and good looking. It’s disappointing, anger inducing, and hard to accept that he could be so limited. Woody, do you have any suggestions for how to improve my chances with men? I long for an emotionally-sexually intimate relationship. I know there are other factors than flaccid penis size in the establishment of attraction. And there must be some men out there who don’t place such a premium on penis size. Also, any suggestions on how to be more at ease in clothing optional situations would be appreciated. --- Not that small Dear Not: Your letter reminds me of something a friend once told me: The difference between men and pigs is that pigs don’t turn into men when they drink. This kind of shallow, Nazi-like adherence to what’s physically acceptable has got to stop. It is possible to meet good-looking guys who don’t care about penis size, guys who know that a man can’t be reduced to the sum of his parts, no matter how small those parts may be. And I’m going to show you how to find them. It’s rare that I let a reader’s question take up more space than my answer, and not just because I’m a megalomaniac who can’t stand being pushed off-stage. I’m making an exception because A) your letter broke my heart and B) nothing I could possibly say about our culture’s size obsession could be more powerful than reading your cruel and brutal story.
