The best chatter on social media this week
“I don’t do blanket condemnation and I haven’t got a good answer to the question. Inherently, within myself, the things that seem to me to be absolutely central are around faithfulness, stability or relationships and loving relationships.”
The Archbishop Of Canterbury JUSTIN WELBY, answering a question from a journalist for GQ magazine as to whether he believed gay sex is a sin. The Archbishop admitted there were “irreconcilable” differences in the global Anglican community on LGBT issues.
“I’m doing TV in the city of Miami, and that is one of the most vulnerable cities on the entire globe to the effects of global warming… in the case of South Florida, telling people about sea level rise I think is extremely important, because the more they know about that, the better prepared they are going to be.”
NBC-6 Miami Chief Meterologist, JOHN MORALES, quoted on Flipboard.com

“Transgender people in the military are in. Tweeting legislation is out. I [heart] our military. All of them.”
ELLEN DEGENERES, Emmy-winning comedian and talk show host, on Twitter, following the announcement that the courts had rejected President Trump’s ban on transgender individuals serving in the military.
“People can’t decide whether they hate you or your pizza more. That’s why you are losing money. Don’t make it political.”
DONA VAN ECK, in a comment thread on DeadState, responding to Papa John’s CEO JOHN SCHNATTER blaming the NFL’s kneeling football players for his pizza chain’s sagging sales. Schnatter’s net worth reportedly fell $70 million in less than 24 hours after the company released its latest financials.
“I have come to a point in my life where I am ready to discuss my truth.”
AL REYNOLDS, ex-husband of TV talk show personality Star Jones, coming out as bisexual.
“Before homosexuality was decriminalized, men could be sentenced to years in prison, hard labor and whipping, for having consensual sex with another man. These acts should never have been considered an offense, and the men impoacted should never have had a criminal record against their names.” MARK McGOWAN, West Australia’s Labor premier, giving a “long overdue” apology to gay men convicted to having sex prior to legal decriminalization.

THE TOP 10 THINGS WE LOVE THIS WEEK
By Mike Rox
Over network TV? Tired of Hulu? Seen “everything” on Netflix? Dig a little deeper to find meaningful and surprisingly well-executed LGBT films making the festival rounds this fall . "The Lavendar Scare"
1
A documentary detailing the homosexual witch hunt sanctioned by the U.S. government in the 1950s (made possible by then-Senator Joseph McCarthy's anti-communism campaign), "The Lavendar Scare" – which has been in production since at least 2013, but only released last year – follows several subjects, including lifelong LGBT activist Frank Kemeny, as they tell their harrowing stories of humiliation, blackmail, and dismissal of civil service for what amounts to nothing more than keeping their private lives private. This eye-opening doc is still making the rounds – recently winning awards at film fests in Atlantic City; Fargo, North Dakota; Hartford, Connecticut; Kansas City; and Memphis – but you may find it among the screenings at an arthouse theater or LGBT film festival near you. If not, call your local indie joint and request it.
"Close-Knit" You might not expect one of the most progressive trans films ever made to emerge from Japan – especially considering that's 'its the first trans film to come from the country "ever" – but it makes sense for "Close-Knit", a surprising narrative that focuses on the beating heart of a blended-bycircumstance family. The film takes issue with the trans plot line as an aside, welcomingly, and rather pays attention to the bond formed between a young girl and her uncle's male-to-female partner during the absence of her oft-missing mother. The film, directed by Naoko Ogigami, took home the top prize at the Far East Film Festival in Udine, Italy; Best Narrative Feature at the Tel Aviv International LGBT Film Festival; and the Teddy Jury Award at the Berlin International Film Festival.
2
"Families Like Yours"
3
Underwritten by Bristol-Meyers Squibb, Wells Fargo, and the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, "Families Like Yours" showcases through candid interviews the challenges of raising an LGBT family in America – which, for all intents and purposes, is not unlike raising a “traditional” family in America (the whole point of this documentary) – as it introduces us to the LGBT men and women called mommy and daddy by their children, including out actor Denis O'Hare, husband Hugo Redwood and adopted son Declan. The film recently screened at 'Fort Lauderdales OUTshine Film Festival, following its July premiere in New York City presented by Deutsche Bank.
"God's Own Country"
4
There's a lot to like about Britain's "God's Own Country" – before you even sit down to watch it. If its Sundance Film Festival cred doesn't attract you – it was the only UK-based movie to feature in the world drama category at this year's event – perhaps its 98-percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes will do the trick. Drawing comparison to "Brokeback Mountain" (which, admittedly, is an easy association for our community for any material portraying rough sex in a rural setting between two partners who don't consider themselves “gay”), "God's Own Country" at least does right where that Best Picture Oscar nominee broke our hearts by pursuing a happy ending. Even if that is relative nowadays.

5
"After Louie"
Artist and ACT UP activist Sam (Alan Cumming), who lived through the early years of the HIV/AIDS crisis, is disillusioned by Millennials' seeming disregard for the disease as they solicit casual sex through social media with seemingly no regard for the consequences while simultaneously resting on their political laurels at a time when activism is quite necessary. But just when Sam thinks there's no hope for our LGBT future in the hands of 20somethings, along comes young, pretty Braeden to revive his cold, dead heart (figuratively, of course). IndieWire's Jude Dry calls it “one of the most exciting queer films of 2017 so far.” Doubling down on that sentiment, "Los Angeles Blade"'s John Paul King says, “"After Louie" may well be the most important gay movie you see in your lifetime.”
"High Low Forty"
6
Long-estranged brothers Billy and Joe reconnect during a road trip back to their native Texas to be by their dying father's side. The sibs haven't seen each other in a while because after Billy was discharged from the Army, he beat feet to Los Angeles, the reason for which plays out over the long ride home (though you've probably already guessed why). Directed and written by and starring Paddy Quinn, "High-Low Forty" won Best Narrative Feature at this year's GI Film Festival in San Diego.
7
"Rift"
Iceland – if you're not aware – has a solid track record for producing attentioncommanding queer films (if you haven't found "Heartstone" yet, track it down), and "Rift" is no exception. This thriller/horror-mystery finds exboyfriends Gunnar and Einar holed up together in BFI (that's Bumfuck, Iceland for the uninitiated) haunted by their past and a few bumps in the night. The film won the Artistic Vision Award at L.A. Outfest 2017 and is scheduled for limited theatrical release on Nov. 21.

Jennifer Garner
By Romeo San Vicente
Nick Robinson For moviegoing audiences in big cities, access to LGBT film festivals and their myriad coming out-themed movies can lead to a kind of jaded “seen it all before mentality. But the fact is that queerthemed mainstream film, the kind that shows up in the neighborhood multiplex, is more rare a cinematic product than the latest installment of the "God's Not Dead" franchise. So cheers to director Greg Berlanti and his upcoming project "Love, Simon", a gay teen comingof-age tale with some studio muscle behind it. Written by Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger ("This is Us") and based on Becky Albertalli's novel "Simon Vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda", it stars Nick Robinson ("Jurassic World") as a closeted boy who falls for an anonymous classmate online before he has a chance to explain his own identity to family and friends. Jennifer Garner, Josh Duhamel, Tony Hale ("Veep") and Alexandra Shipp ("XMen: Apocalypse") co-star and it hits theaters in March 56 | Hotspots.LGBT
Dee Rees
We are ready to "Love, Simon"
of 2018. More of this, please; queer kids need love stories.
Dee Rees waging "An Uncivil War" Dee Rees, the lesbian director whose indie hit "Pariah" was met with critical acclaim, and whose latest, "Mudbound", heads to Netflix in November, has another project on her plate, and it's about the ERA. Now, maybe you're young and don't remember the Equal Rights Amendment, a sweeping and progressive piece of legislation that died
a long, protracted death in the 1970s, but it was hugely divisive and it was fought against tooth and nail by the very people whose antiwoman, anti-queer social agendas led, eventually, to the election of people like Ronald Reagan and, ultimately, the current administration. But for a moment 40 years ago it looked like civil rights for all people was going to be a real thing in the United States, and it took feminist activists like Gloria Steinem and lawyer Flo Kennedy all they
Heidi Blickenstaff
had to fight against antifeminist Evangelical leaders like the late Phyllis Schlafly. Rees is reworking an original script by writer David Kukoff and Film Nation Entertainment is financing the entire project. No cast yet, but the story is too exciting – and ultimately infuriating – a history lesson to ignore, so we'll be keeping track of this one.
Lena Waithe's "The Chi" finds new life at Showtime Last time we told you about actor/writer Lena Waithe, she hadn't won her Emmy for the “Thanksgiving” episode of "Master of None", but she did have a project set up at Showtime about a young black man having to raise a child alone. The pilot, however, didn't go to series, and in Hollywood that usually means the whole thing is dead. But a reworked version called "The Chi", executive produced by Common and starring "Straight Outta Compton"'s Jason Mitchell, is a go. It's now the story of a young man whose life consists of friction between his career goals and family responsibilities, and shooting is already underway in Chicago. In a
Tom Kitt & Brian Yorkey year when we've seen a lot of African-American TV projects get cancelled or come to an end, this is very good news, and it couldn't happen to a cooler creator than Waithe. We're impatient for it.
"Freaky Friday" now comes with singing
Cozi Zuehlsdorff
Depending on how old you were when the various incarnations passed your way, your favorite version of "Freaky Friday" is Mary Rodgers' 1972 novel, or maybe the 1976 Jodie Foster film version, or maybe the 2003 Lindsay Lohan film version. But if you're, say, 10 years old right about now, and maybe about to realize you're queer, bets are that the latest musical version from
Disney is the one that's going to win your heart. The remake will star Heidi Blickenstaff, who played the mom role in the recent stage adaptation, and Cozi Zuehlsdorff ("A Dolphin Tale") as the argumentative mother and daughter who wish to switch places for a day. Magic happens and you know the rest. The musical features music and lyrics by the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning duo of Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey ("Next to Normal", "If/Then") and book by Bridget Carpenter. Get ready to hear a lot of this stuff on Radio Disney, parents.

I
have been living in South Florida for a little over 20 years, but about a year before I left New York City a restaurant opened in the West Village called “Lips.” I remember going there with friends quite a few times and loving the campy drag atmosphere. You can only imagine how excited I was a little over a decade ago when I heard Lips was going to open a location here in Fort Lauderdale. Fast forward to now and we are on the cusp th of Lips celebrating their 10 anniversary. For this momentous occasion I thought it appropriate to sit down with the Grand Dame, Founder and Queen Mother of the Lips empire, Yvonne Lame' for this exclusive Hotspots interview.
How did you decide to open the first Lips, and what made NYC the perfect choice? I was living in New York, and basically my partner owned a bar called Rome and we were doing a once a week drag night that became very successful and then the opportunity popped up to present to business partners who had a restaurant that was failing. The concept was the hard rock café of drag. Then we opened and there was an article in New York magazine about us and it took off like crazy. We have never looked back since.
At what point did you realize you had a successful business model? Probably after we opened Lips San Diego and that became a success. We then realized we have something that can work in the larger cosmopolitan cities.
What made you open in Fort Lauderdale? My partners lived in Fort Lauderdale and that was the driving force for it to be the next location.
How did you/do you choose your cast members? We usually have queens audition, but we also look for the best of the best. I go out to the clubs look. In
Yvonne Lame
What exciting plans do you have for the 10 year anniversary of the Fort Lauderdale location? We are going to have new shows, new outfits, more glitter, more glam and more fun!
What does the future hold for the Lips Corporation? Next year is very exciting for us as we are opening in Chicago, and it will be our grandest location. The location is Motor Row. We are actually in the old Ford Dealership showroom.
Lips Fort Lauderdale will be celebrating their 10 year anniversary from November 14-19 with special anniversary shows. Lips is open 6 days a week from Tuesday through Sundays with different shows themes every night. For more information or to make a reservation call them at 954-567-0987. Hmmm...
BIRDS DO IT, BEES DO IT...
Even gay lions do it... Nairobi official: ‘Crazy gay’ lions need counseling
T
he world was captivated a while back when two gay lions on a reserve in Kenya came out of the closet (or bushes?) and were photographed having sexual intercourse. Experts observed that not only did the adult, fully-maned lions have intercourse, but that it lasted far longer than is typical between a lion and lioness, and the display of extreme affection between the two males was, well… extraordinary. A female nearby apparently felt rejected, turned her back and declined to watch. The photograph, shot by nature photographer extraordinaire Paul Goldstein, went viral on social media, serving as a reminder that homosexuality is a natural occurrence found in all creatures. Scientists reportedly agree about 10 percent of the animal kingdom is gay. “No species has been found in which homosexual behavior has not been shown to exist, with the exception of species that

never have sex at all, such as sea urchins and aphis,” confirmed zoologist Petter Bockmon. But the heart-warming photograph of the out and proud male lions has incurred the wrath of government officials in Kenya, where homophobia in legislated with strict laws and prosecutions against same-sex activity. “These animals need counseling because probably they have been influenced by gays who have gone to the national parks and behaved badly,” said Ezekiel Mutua, the chief executive of the Kenya Film Classification Board, according to the Nairobi News. He continued: “Where on earth have you ever heard something like this happening. The demonic spirits inflicting in humans seems to have now caught up with animals.” He called for the isolation of the two “crazy gay animals.”

nd now we can add the horrific mass shooting in Las Vegas to the list because, wouldn’t you know it, the gays were behind it all with their shadow government Nazi death squads (coming soon to a town near you!). If this sounds like a claim only a crazy person who shouldn’t be taken seriously or given any kind of platform to spout such nonsense would make, you are right! But this is America, and that means Rick Wiles does indeed have an audience for his so-called “Trunews” project (spoiler alert: Trunews is neither true, nor news). He calls himself “a citizen reporter who decided to take on the Big News Media.” In reality he’s a nut with a website who thinks Jesus talks to him through his fillings or something. Anywho, Wiles is convinced that homosexual death squads are responsible for the massacre in Las Vegas on Oct. 1 and that the leader of said Nazi death squads is… Ellen DeGeneres? Why, yes. See, Jesus Campos, a Mandalay Bay security guard who was shot by the gunman in Vegas, appeared on the Ellen show. Which is proof of a “gay/lesbian Nazi regime.” “America has become a Nazi state. The deep state is a Nazi state,” Wiles says on his show. “That is why Campos appeared on a daytime talk show hosted by a fast-talking,
80 | Hotspots.LGBT
RICK WILES dancing comedienne, and, let me add, a lesbian, because this Nazi regime is a gay/ lesbian Nazi regime, just like Nazis in Hitler’s day. Hitler was a bisexual, the top Nazi leaders of the Nazi party were homosexuals. The Nazi takeover of Germany was a militant homosexual fascist takeover; that is what is taking place in America today.” Got all that? Note that Wiles is not the first person to claim that Hitler and the Nazis were homos. After all, if you hate gays so much that you believe nothing could possibly be worse, then “gay Nazis” really helps to bolster your hate. Also, Wiles’ claim is confusing given that we have literal Nazis in the highest reaches of government and the public sphere right now. The very president is celebrated by white nationalists. Perhaps to Wiles the gay/lesbian Nazis are the bad ones and the Trump-loving ones are the good ones. Of course, the gay/lesbian Nazis are the pretend ones and the Trump-loving ones are very, very real. There’s enough real shit to be scared of (men with unlimited access to guns, for example) in this world. People like Wiles are literally, and figuratively, making it worse. or the second year the Front Runners & Walkers Fort Lauderdale are offering their free Couch to 5K training, a 9 week training for new or aspiring runners. The target piece is the Rainbow 5K (what they are training people for), which is the Pride Centers annual fundraiser on January 21. Not only is it free, but individuals need not join the club to participate. Last year they started with 15 people, and 8 finished training, and all 8 have stayed in the Front Runners. So they trust that once people are introduced to the club, finish the training and the Rainbow 5K they will want to become members. Over the years, Front Runner clubs have formed across the United States, Canada,
Europe, Australia, South Africa, Japan, and the Middle East. Back in 1974, "Lavender U" was formed in San Francisco to provide a setting for gays and lesbians to participate in track and field events, especially running. Also in 1974, The Front Runner, by Patricia Nell Warren was published. This was a ground breaking novel about homosexual love in the sports world. It is a love story about a coach and his star runner. In honor of this book, the name "Lavender U" was changed to "San Francisco Front Runners." With that first running club in San Francisco, other larger cities started to form gay running clubs. In 1989 a local group of gays and lesbians who had the goal to run the New York Marathon formed Front Runners Fort Lauderdale. Walking was later added to the Front Runners activities. Front Runners
Fort Lauderdale has members from Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade Counties. Front Runners & Walkers Fort Lauderdale still has some of their original members from 1989. They have 3 weekly runs…2 at Holiday Park on Wed and Sun evenings, and the Saturday morning run at the Pride Center. After all the runs they go out to eat and socialize. They also have a social every month, which have included kayaking, bar romps, and joint socials with other sports clubs. They also produce a banquet every year. I asked President Eric Runyan why he joined the group and what has kept him part of the group, and he said: “The reason I joined was because experts say you are much more likely to stick with a fitness regimen if you are around other people that are fitness conscious. I wanted to make sure I stuck with it, so I joined Front Runners. I stayed, because I enjoy the social aspect and the company of the members.” Front Runners and Walkers Fort Lauderdale has become much more diverse
and now has straight members. Gyl Meloche got started because his wife (Verneshia) was getting nervous running through the neighborhood at night, and she wanted to run with people who wouldn't be hitting on her. To support his wife Gyl started running with her as soon as she joined Front Runners. When asked about his membership in Frontrunners Gyl said: “I felt that Front Runners and Walkers Fort Lauderdale was a very welcoming group who accepted my wife and I for who we are.” If you'd like to get into running, attend their Couch to 5k Interest Meeting and th Raffle at the Pride Center, Monday, Nov 13 at 7:30pm in room 200. The event is free and winner of the drawing will receive a free membership, member shirt and free registration for the Rainbow 5K. The actual training for the Rainbow 5K starts 2 days later on Wednesday Nov 15 at 6:30p.m. at Holiday Park.
Front Runners & Walker Fort Lauderdale is a proud member of Road Runners Club of America and is a 501(c)(3) corporation. To sign up for Couch to 5K training or for more information on the club visit: Frontrunnersfortlauderdale.org

NEED WOOD
By Woody Miller
SEALED WITH A
KISS
H
y
ey Woody! I’ve been told I’m a great kisser but I couldn’t tell you why—I just do whatever comes naturally. I mean, I don’t say to myself things like ‘okay, dart your tongue in three times, back off and finish with a lick over his teeth.” Still, I’m wondering, if I wanted to get even better, what would I do? Since I don’t know what I’m doing right in the first place, how do I know what I should do to improve? — The Kissing Bandit
y
Hey Woody! I use some of the phone apps and have actually gone on dates. The majority have been duds. However, there are some dates where both parties had a good time. My question is, what is the proper etiquette as to who calls whom first? Is it the guy who made the first contact or the answeree? — Unclassifiable
y
Dear Bandit: You’re a good kisser because you love to kiss and you’re into the guy you’re kissing and you live for the effect it has on him. I doubt you need much technical advice but here are a few tips if you want to add a little hooch to the smooch: 1. Be rhythmical. Move smoothly from passive to active, from slow to fast to back and forth, from dry to wet, to gentle and wild. 2. Breathe through your nose. It prolongs the kiss. 3. Close your eyes. They’ll look like two giant beach balls to the guy you’re kissing if you don’t. And who wants to kiss big balls? Wait. Bad example. Just keep your eyes closed and quit confusing me, damn it. 4. Make sounds. Small, almost imperceptible sounds. A tiny rumble here, a soft moan
there. Communicate what you like and what you’re feeling through noises, not words. 5. Kiss your partner’s eyes. The heat of your lips on his eyelids will drive him crazy. Just make sure his eyes are closed. There’s nothing worse than getting your corneas licked. 6. Let your desire show. Look at your partner with a deep, rapacious, insatiable hunger. The way Republicans do when they see the Alaska wilderness. If you want more tips, send your online pictures. I do housecalls, you know. Or read William Cane’s excellent book, The Art of Kissing.
Dear Unclassifiable: The one with the smallest d--k has to call first. What the hell kind of question is that? You’re sitting there scratching your ass going “Duh, I really like this guy, but I’m not going to call because I hit him up first on the app and everybody knows the guy doesn’t call first.” For all you know he’s already called but the ringing in your ears drowned out the phone. Here’s the rule: There ain’t no rule. You do what feels natural in the context of the signals you pick up from the other guy.
