Replace the traditional New Year's resolutions that you probably won't keep (I know how hard it is to stick to an everyday gym routine when it's arctic degrees outside) with something more meaningful – like committing to ways to be a better queer. Here's a shortlist to get you started.

Spend more money at LGBTQ-owned businesses

1

I'm not recommending you stop spending your money at hetero-owned business – though I'm sure there's a faction of us out there who would recommend that – but rather take some time to research your local retailers and restaurants to see who's family. Many times you can glean this information by word of mouth or just a little digging on social media. When we support each other personally and professionally, our communities are stronger. Just look at what we did to San Francisco. And New York. And L.A. And Miami…

Stand up for yourself and your sexual orientation

2

Don't let people put you down, and don't let anyone make you hide in the closet – period. Actress Marsha Warfield recently relayed an anecdote about how she's been out privately forever, but her mother didn't want her to come out publicly because she'd be embarrassed by it. Whitney Houston dealt with the same issue, as do countless other ordinary people. F*ck that, OK. This is your life, you get one shot at it, and if anyone is embarrassed by who you are, you should feel confident enough in yourself to tell that sad, angry person that you will only be better without them. You don't need that shit. Because it's 2018, honey. F*#king LIVE! 30 | Hotspots.LGBT

Give more of your time to local LGBTQ organizations

3

Most communities have an LGBTQ support center, but you might not know it if you're not seeking LGBTQ support. Still, it's there, and it may need "your" support. In 2018, make it a point to pop in to offer your assistance. Maybe you can volunteer your time for an upcoming event; attend an activity (I had a fun evening at drag bingo hosted by my local center recently), mentor LGBTQ youth who desperately need responsible, caring adults in the lives; or offer financial support to keep the center's valuable programs on track. For many of these organizations, just opening the doors on a daily basis is a struggle, and they will appreciate every hour and dollar donated by community members like you.

Support an LGBTQ film festival

4

I've attended several LGBTQ film festivals over the years and these programs are the only place you'll find a conscientious slate of curated films that represent the entire queer community in one mega-celebration of diversity filmmaking. If your home city doesn't offer a film festival, maybe it's time you and your group of go-getters put the wheels in motion to establish one. Otherwise, travel to the LGBTQ film festival near you – or plan a vacay around this affair – so we can all continue to push LGBTQ movies into mainstream consciousness. Hollywood will take notice of our full breadth of films eventually, like it has in the past 18 months with "Moonlight"; "Call Me By Your Name"; and 20th Century Fox's groundbreaking gay-teen romance "Love, Simon", in theaters nationwide on March 15 (which is a big frickin' deal, if you don't already know).

Serve as a mentor for LGBTQ youth It may seem like the world is a more accepting place than ever for LGBTQ youth (and on the whole it is), but there are still kids out there who struggle not only with their sexual orientation and identity but also with friends, family, teachers and authority figures that refuse to accept them as they are – and that's where you come in. If you're a successful queer person, contact your local school district to find out how you can speak at Gay-Straight Alliance meetings to let these youth who may be having a hard time know that it does, in fact, get better. Moreover, programs like Live Out Loud's Homecoming Project helps connect high school alumni to their alma maters, making it easier for you to reach out and inspire. You'll make a bigger difference than you realize, I promise.

M

oya Doherty is proud to announce that Riverdance - The 20th Anniversary World Tour, is back by popular demand, and will play a strictly limited engagement at The Broward Center for the Performing Arts from January 5 – 7. Celebrating an extraordinary milestone for an incredible show, The Edinburgh Evening News raves about Riverdance The 20th Anniversary World Tour, “As for the flaws? Well, there simply aren't any. Here's to another 20 years!” Riverdance - The 20th Anniversary World Tour is composed by Bill Whelan, produced by Moya Doherty and directed by John McColgan. Riverdance - The 20th Anniversary World Tour features new costumes, new lighting, new projections and the addition of a brand new number, “Anna Livia,” featuring the female members of the Irish dance troupe in an a cappella hard-shoe number. “The success of Riverdance across the whole world has gone beyond our wildest dreams,” said producer Moya Doherty. “The fact that the show continues to draw and excite audiences is a tribute to every dancer, singer, musician, staff and crew member who have dedicated themselves to

40 | Hotspots.LGBT

the show. This 20th Anniversary Tour is a thank you to our audiences and a celebration of what has been an incredible journey across two decades.” Riverdance - The 20th Anniversary World Tour is an innovative and exciting blend of dance, music and song. Drawing on Irish traditions, the combined talents of the performers propel Irish dancing and music into the present day, capturing the imagination of audiences across all ages and cultures. th Riverdance - The 20 Anniversary World Tour has set design by Robert Ballagh, lighting design by John Comiskey, costume design by Joan Bergin and sound design by Michael O'Gorman. It was a pleasure to sit down with Lead Dancer Maggie Darlington for this exclusive Hotspots Interview:

At what age did you begin dancing? I started when I was 3. I had two older sisters that were already dancing, so I picked it up at a very early age. What was your first Professional/Paid gig? I may have been paid for smaller jobs earlier, but my first big stint was at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg Virginia and the show was called Celtic Fyre, and I worked there for the summer in 2010.

Other than this show, what show has been your

Maggie Darlington favorite to dance in? I did a show called “Battle of the Bands.” It was dinner theater, and the reason it stands out is because it was so fun to do something from scratch. In addition, I still have amazing friends from that project.

What's your fantasy role?

I do love “Newsies,” but I am not really a modern dancer.

How did you get cast in River Dance?

I auditioned with the dance captain and about a year later I got cast. I have now been with them for 6 years.

What should the South Florida audiences expect th out of 20 anniversary tour of Riverdance? Traditionally the girl numbers have been light and pretty but this new tour has new numbers including an acapella number for the girls which is a strong and powerful number. This show is such a good celebration of Irish music and culture. We also have tap and Russian ballet, so there is something for everybody. In addition, the whole cast loves what we do and I think that comes across.

For over 20 years, nothing has carried the energy, the sensuality and the spectacle of Riverdance. Riverdance began its journey as the interval act in the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest, produced for television by Moya Doherty. This electrifying and innovative seven minute dance piece was then developed into a full-length stage show by Producer Moya Doherty, Composer Bill Whelan and Director John McColgan. With its fusion of Irish and International music and dance, the show broke all box office records during its world première run in Dublin in early 1995. When the show transferred to London the reaction was unprecedented. There followed a hugely successful tour starting in New York in March 1996, where 8 sold-out shows at Radio City Music Hall heralded the start of 16 years of non-stop touring by Riverdance companies throughout North America. Since its inception Riverdance has packed theatres throughout North America, Oceania, Asia, Europe, South Africa and South America.

Tickets are available at the Broward Center AutoNation Box Office, 201 SW Fifth Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL, 33312, browardcenter.org or call 954.462.0222. Orders for groups of ten (10) or more may be placed by calling 954.660.6307. Ticket prices start at $35.25*. For more information, please visit: riverdance.com Hotspots.LGBT | 41

Me encantaría conocerlo.

Adora:Wow, did you hear about the show on comic book super heroes at the Bunjilaka Cultural Center in Melbourne Australia?…The art looks so cool! Teddy Behr: Yeah, it is; The Aboriginal / Indigenous people of Australia have this long tradition of story telling based on their cultural memes, and their own art tradition too, so it s very unique and different

Jake Kennedy

from Western / Euro-centric traditions, or in some ways a cultural starting point from what most of us are used to. Adora: The Exhibition is called 'Marramb-ik' which means 'I am' in Aboriginal Kulin Language. The main artist is Lin Onus who died in 1996. He was the artist who laid the groundwork for a whole genre of Aboriginal-identity super heroes, inspired by the Euro-centric super hero comics we already know, but based on the famous legends and ancestral histories of the people living in Australia before the arrival of Europeans. Teddy Behr: It's pretty interesting that the Western idea of heroism and super-power are based in an idea of social and technological 'progress' while in the Aboriginal context, there's said to be an emphasis on the restoration of a more spiritual and natural balance, both as an ideal to strive for, and as a means to achieve it.Adora: Yes, every culture has it's own unique ways of viewing the world, and I love exploring it all. In South Florida we're near a lot of pre- European cultures and memories too; some are blends of several traditions like in Mexico and the Caribbean; others are still waiting to be remembered, and heard. I think my fav here are the murals and Pieces by Heidi Brooks. it's like a whole beautiful world of lovely creatures

she creates…everything whether it looks like a building or a plant or a person or an animal…they all look alive and radiant….like they re all dancing to the same music. Teddy Behr: I know..it's kind of child-like, but wouldn't you love to live there! I like Jade Kennedy's work too; his figures are heroic and kind of tech, but they re full of detail ….I really connect with them. Adora: Mmmmm…they re nice…and he looks so charming with that beautiful open smile…I'd love to meet him. I bet he's fun. Teddy Behr: He's beautiful…And then there's Cienan Muir…I guess he's the one with the drama…Looks like he likes to dress up as a super hero too. There's a dark and solitary side to his art…even though I think it's kind of fun drama…but hey….you can't have a good story without drama, can you. Adora: Maybe I like his the best: Drama is EVERYTHING! In comics, in art, in life… Why do you think I spend so much time and money on eye shadow…And wouldn't you miss it if I didn't? Teddy Behr:Oh yes!!

-------------------------------------------

The role of storytelling has been an integral part of First Peoples culture since the beginning of time and to this day stories of creation, lore, social and political movements and of ancestors are told. Visual storytelling has been around for tens of thousands of years and here we present Victorian First Peoples storytelling through the medium of comics.

A Gentlemen's Guide To Love & Murder Getting away with murder can be so much fun… and there's no better proof than the knock-'em-dead hit show that's earned unanimous raves and won the 2014 Tony Award for Best Musical. This is the uproarious story of Monty Navarro, a distant heir to a family fortune who sets out to jump the line of succession, by any means necessary. PAULINE HANSON

rowing up, my Australian education consisted of watching “Crocodile Dundee” and listening to “Down Under” by Men At Work. Today’s generation may be more familiar with Australia via YouTube videos of terrifyingly large spiders and venomous snakes. I suspect that if you asked the average American if marriage equality is legal in Australia, most would say yes. But it is not. It hopefully will be soon as the majority of Australians support marriage equality, which was reaffirmed by a national postal survey (a.k.a. a voluntary mail-in ballot) in November that found over 60% in favor of L-O-V-E. But it’s parliament’s move, as they ultimately have the power to pass such laws. Of course, not everyone is thrilled with the prospect of same-sex couples saying, “I do.” Pauline Hanson, a senator for Queensland, is more of an “I don’t” kind of gal. According to a speech Hanson gave to parliament, people who want marriage equality are “pushing their own agenda” and “selfish.” She describes sex education as “messing around the minds of young children,” and says that kids shouldn’t learn about “body parts” until they’re 14 or 15 (never mind the fact that plenty of 14 and 15 year olds, gay and straight, are already using these “body parts” for sex stuff). “I have no problems with people being in love and doing what they want to but why do you have to...push on the majority of the population,” Hanson asked. “I have grown up of the opinion that marriage was between a man and a woman,” she said in her speech, “but I do not take away the right of people to be in a relationship and to find happiness within themselves.” Which is cute and all, but insisting that gays and lesbians exist solely “within themselves” is essentially demanding that they stay in the closet, which means that they don’t exist out in the world. It’s a common refrain from the anti-gay camp: “If people want to love each other, fine, but I don’t want to have to see it or deal with it or acknowledge it in any way.”

BY D’ANNE WITKOWSKI

It’s as if gays and lesbians are expected to exist on the fringe of society, rather than as a part of it. The fact is, we have structured our society, for better or worse, around legally codified relationships, and excluding same-sex couples from legal recognition erases them and paints them as illegitimate. This is true in the U.S. and it is true in Australia. So if it’s “selfish” to demand equal rights, then I’d say that’s a good reason to be selfish. Of course, Hanson and those like her believe that what’s truly selfish is raising children with two moms or two dads, a concern that takes its cue from the lie that gays and lesbians are a danger to children. Hanson’s nightmare scenario involves a kid going to school and being told by a teacher, “I want you to draw a picture of your mum and dad or grandma and grandad.” And she pictures a kid saying, “What am I going to do? I don’t have a mum or a dad — it’s Peter and Sam. It’s Elizabeth and Amanda.” You know what my kid does in these situations? He draws a picture of his two moms. It’s not that hard. But to see through to this obvious answer, you have to actually see two moms and two dads as capable and worthy parents. Hanson doesn’t. As a marriage bill bounces around in parliament, let’s hope that Hanson is able to find happiness within herself and can stop trying to snatch it from same-sex couples.

“WOW Presents Plus” is going to be extra Randy Barbato and Fenton Bailey, the gays behind World of Wonder production company, have a streaming service that plans to answer the question, “What are Bob The Drag Queen and Jinkx Monsoon doing right now?” The service recently launched with a slate of original programming tailor made for fans of "RuPaul's Drag Race" (translation: you). Shows will include "Bobbin' Around with Bob the Drag Queen", travelogue of sorts where Bob TDQ zooms around the globe being Bob; "Marco Marco's Models", which follows the adventures of the Los Angeles designer's army of alt-models in their underwear; "Detox's Life Rehab", in which Detox helps you live your best life – and presumably lip sync better – and "Cool Mom with Jinkx Monsoon", where Jinkx and her 29 year-old gay son talk 108 | Hotspots.LGBT

about smoking weed and hooking up with guys. In other words, it's an all-queer Viceland in the making and we're here for it. Take our $3.99 a month, WOW.

GLAAD funds "TransMilitary" GLAAD, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, is moving in a new direction. The organization's Media Institute is giving a grant to finance its first feature film, a

documentary called "TransMilitary". The film will follow four service personnel, all transgender, as they perform their jobs and also join the fight against Donald Trump's proposed ban on transgender soldiers. The film will be co-directed by Fiona Dawson and Gabriel Silverman, and produced by Jamie Coughlin. The three previously created the 2015 doc "Transgender, At War and

In Love". No word on when the project will be finished and ready to make the queer film festival rounds and make Republicans lose their minds, but its urgency and timeliness couldn't be more real, so we'll assume they're working round the clock to get it on screens.

Eva Longoria's "Lucky Boy" aims for cable fortune Eva Longoria's UnbeliEVAble Entertainment production company is currently developing a series based on the book "Lucky Boy", based on Shanthi Sekaran's book about two female immigrants who fight to protect an American child. David Schulner ("Do No Harm"), who worked with Longoria on "Desperate Housewives", will write, and lesbian filmmaker Nisha Ganatra ("Chutney

Leslie Jordan Popcorn", "Transparent") is signed on to direct. The story follows a woman named Soli, an undocumented immigrant, whose life intersects with an Indian-American woman named Kavya, who is trying to conceive a child. This is a pilot, of course, so nothing is certain, but when it's finished it will be shopped to streaming channels as well as premium cable, where all the interesting stories seem to go these days. The topic of immigration is once again a political football (or sledgehammer if you're on the xenophobic right), so let's hope this one gets a shot.

Leslie Jordan is at the "Cool Kids" table

Eva Longoria

"The Golden Girls" meets "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia" in the pilot for Fox's new retirement community comedy, "Cool Kids". And we say "Always Sunny" because the show is being co-created by "Sunny" star Charlie Day and coproduced by fellow cast

members Rob McElhenney and Glenn Howerton. The pilot stars Leslie Jordan ("Will & Grace"), David Alan Grier ("In Living Color"), Martin Mull ("Roseanne") and Vicki Lawrence ("The Carol Burnett Show") as four friends jockeying for position as top dogs at their retirement home. We'll just assume that Jordan's character is gay, because a specific sort of brash queerness is pretty much his trademark across all sorts of comedy media, and that's also why we love him. And we could use a senior queer sitcom regular on TV these days, if for no other reason than LGBTQ Baby Boomers are entering their retirement years and about to fill up the nation's senior facilities. Sitcoms help push these realities forward. Meanwhile, the idea of Vicki Lawrence back on network television brings joy to our hearts, and now she's the right age to actually play a Mama-like character.

NEED WOOD

By Woody Miller

DEBBIE DOES

DALAS AND LOVES LUCY

H

ey Woody! Not only do my boyfriend and I have house-shaking sex, we also do three-ways, groups, baths, and sex clubs. He is the nastiest, biggest f--k pig I’ve ever run across. God, I love him. So here’s the problem: Last month we were in a sex club where he was being gang-f--ked in a sling. In the middle of everything he bursts into tears, holds my face in his hands and tells me how much he loves me. Talk about embarrassing. Try to be a d--k pig in the middle of that. I adore this man but I don’t understand his timing. The raunchier the sex act the more emotional he gets about me. What can I do to keep his legs spread and his mouth shut when we’re being pigs? — Stop it, you’re embarrassing me

y

Hey Woody! Is it safe to use the spit of other guys as lube for masturbation? If the guy has HIV and he spits up a bucketful of saliva, am I in danger if I use it to pound my pud? — A handful

y

Dear Stop: I kept holding your email up to the light to make sure it wasn’t a counterfeit. But then I remembered, life is stranger than fiction. The therapists on my advisory panel agreed on two things: 1) Raunch scenes trigger your boyfriend’s emotional outpouring because he sees your approval of these scenes as the ultimate testament of your love for him. 2) Your boyfriend is one sick f--k. Well, the therapists didn’t actually say that. So allow me: Your boyfriend is one instrument short of a band. You don’t have to listen very long to know something doesn’t sound right. He declares his eternal love for

you while complete strangers are f--king him into hamburger meat? I know sick. *That’s * sick. Most relationships would disintegrate with the kind of openness you guys have. Now, where was I? Oh, yeah. Your boyfriend blubbers about love in all the wrong places because he’s emotionally overwhelmed by the sexual freedom you’ve given him. Sex with strangers in your presence puts him in touch with that love and he wants to express it. The solution is pretty simple. Pull him aside before your next date with Caligula’s friends and say, “Look, dear, I love to hear you say you love me. But that’s really personal and I don’t want strangers to hear our deepest intimacies. Our love is special and I want to keep it just between us.” And don’t forget to end the talk by saying “You Sick F--k.”

Dear Handful: Wait, let me get this straight. You ask guys to spit up pails of saliva so you can beat off with it? What is this, Sick Week at the Sex Advice Corral? Actually, it sounds hot. It doesn’t fall under safe sex but it’s pretty low on the risk meter. The virus is present in saliva but at very low levels. In fact, the risk of using saliva of an HIV positive man to masturbate with is much lower than the risk of having oral sex with that same man.
