Join us at Lake Worth’s Bryant Park, stop by to say hello and enter to win a VIP concert package to see Britney Spears Live including back stage passes! Special thanks goes out to photographer extraordinaire, Dennis Dean and Hotspots Art Director, Frank Mendez for making it all possible. Check it out starting on page 56. when Belle opens her heart to new adventures and the Beast’s enchanted objects take center stage for a dazzling skating spectacle inviting audiences to “Be Our Guest.”. It was a pleasure to sit down with Artistic Director, Bryan Santiago, for this exclusive Hotspots interview:
What age did you start skating?
I started skating when I was 12. I actually was a ballet dancer before I skated. My family moved to a new city where my grandmother worked at the skating rink. I started skating and enjoyed it a lot so I started taking lessons.
What was your first paid skating gig?
I started skating professionally in the summer of 2008.
What was your favorite show to perform in?
I performed on Disney on Ice World of Enchantment and I was a principle skater where I performed Andy from Toy Story. I enjoyed that immensely.
When did you become Artistic Director?
This is my second tour as AD, as I got that job in 2016. As a performer I really enjoyed bringing different characters to life. Now I get to help my performers bring the characters to life and get to help them grow as performers.
Do you enjoy being on tour even after all these years?
I do, and it’s been 10 years on the road. Now when I go home on my breaks, I get a little stir crazy being in the same spot and not having to pack my suitcases.
familiar with, including Tangled and Frozen, plus the classics their parents grew up with, including Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid.
What should the South Florida audiences expect from this show?
This is an exciting show as it has 4 different stories and it starts out with an 80’s medley. Also Ariel does an Aerial act which is amazing. The show finishes with Frozen, which lets be real everyone loves.
What do you do for fun?
It’s really fun to explore the different cities. I love the coffee shops, art museums, etc.
Do you explore the cities with you cast members? It varies. I do like my alone time, but I also I love developing a relationship outside of work with my co-workers.

The week started out with incredible news, Fort Lauderdale voted in its first openly gay mayor…Dean Trantalis. In addition we also voted in an openly gay commissioner
Steve Glassman (who by the way is married to his partner who he has been with for 45 years). The viewing party was at Thasos Greek Restaurant which then turned into a victory party. In addition, the Dolphin Democrats hosted a Victory Party for both of them during their monthly meeting. I would like to take this opportunity to publicly congratulate Dean, who I have known for over 20 years, and Steve, who I don't know, but am so looking forward to meeting. 20 | Hotspots.LGBT

RuPaul’s All Stars’ Final Four By Scott Holland In the final episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars Season 3, the final
4 were Shangela, Trixie, Kennedy and BeBe. For the final maxi challenge, the girls need to write, sing and dance in the most ambitious production number in drag race history. Starting with Ru Paul’s song “Kitty Girl” the contestants need to compose and perform a solo that shows the world that they came to slay. Later, with Todrick Hall, they will need to come up with choreographer that makes them stand out from their competitors. Then Ru informs them that the eliminated queens are coming back again, and they will play a vital role in the final evaluations. The category for the runway was best drag eleganza extravaganza! Everyone was good in the Maxi challenge and the runway. The 2 best in the maxi were Kennedy and Shangela and on the runway it was Shangela and Trixie. Ru then explained that the top 4 would have to meet with the 26 | Hotspots.LGBT
eliminated queens who would then vote on who should be the top 2. In the end the queens chose Kennedy and Trixie and after the Lip Synch Ru chose Trixie as the winner of All Stars 3.
How has your life changed since you were on Drag Race the first time?
Kennedy – It has changed tremendously. I get to see and entertain the world. It’s what I have always wanted. Bebe – OMG, well it was an amazing platform and now I get the opportunity to meet a lot of wonderful people and travel a lot. I love entertaining worldwide. I am very grateful. Trixie – Katya and I always say it takes your life from black and white to color. I used to lip sych at 7pm. For 10 people and now I go on national and international tours and I have my own TV show. Shangela – Since season 2 and 3 I have been able to travel the world and build a legion of fans
that I love. I am so happy to grow and evolve. I grew up in a small town and I never thought this would happen to me, but I am so grateful and thankful that it did!
What has been some of your favorite cities to visit as a RuPaul Alumni?
Kennedy – I love Seattle, and I also love Nebraska as well as Chicago, and of course I always love to come back to Florida. Bebe – I have gone to so many places. I love Austin Texas, and Seattle. I also love some of the small cities as they appreciate and love drag so much. Trixie – To me it was San Francisco, London, Dallas and Chicago. Shangela – London, Dublin, New York, Chicago and Austin Texas, and of course my home of Dallas.
How exciting was it to get called back for All Stars? Did you consider not coming back, and if so what made you come back? Kennedy – I didn’t think twice about it. I said yes
before the sentence was finished. It had been 2 years since season 7 and I felt like it would be a perfect opportunity for a boost. Additionally I wanted to go and prove myself and let them have it again. Bebe – When the opportunity presented itself, I knew it was going to be polarizing and lots of pressure, so I took a little time to think about it. I decided that my voice was needed there and I said yes.
Trixie – I feel like with the work I have done
outside of the show I have proven myself to audiences, but I wanted to prove something to myself. I needed the do over to try and re write my wrongs and prove I could do it. Shangela – I am Shangela Laquifa Wadley, and I will always come back! I was super excited to be asked and I wanted to showcase how much I have grown.
How did you prepare differently for “All Stars” than you did the first time you were on the show? Kennedy – The only thing I did different is
that this time I actually had a closet filled with clothes to bring. They were mine, not borrowed. Bebe – honestly I prepared the same way, and went with the same strategy…to be authentic. Trixie – I had more money so I could bring nicer clothes and hair. I also brought my guitar and harp. One of the things I have learned after my first time on Drag Race is that you can’t really prepare as you don’t know what they are going to throw at you. Shangela – I knew that every opportunity on the runway and in front of Ru Paul I would want to create a moment. I think and hope I did that!
If you got to choose the top 2, (of the 4) who would Hotspots.LGBT | 27
it have been and why?
Kennedy – Of course I would have picked myself,
bebe
and Shangela. I say Shangela because outside of Ben she was the frontrunner, and she has come so far. She really helped make the show. Bebe – I will pass on that question. Trixie – Myself and Shangela as I think we did a great job in the competition and also exemplify that you can create a great career whether or not you win! Shangela – Myself, as I had the strongest track record of the season and I would have also chosen ….well honestly, they were all good and I can make a case for all 3, so I can’t choose!
How hard was it to keep the secret of who was in the top 2 all these months since filming? Kennedy – It wasn’t hard, because I believe in the
process of Ru Paul’s Drag Race. I would never want to ruin the brand. Bebe – It wasn’t hard for me, because when I did drag race originally no one even knew I went on the show. So I can keep a secret. Trixie – I am a terrible secret keeper so it was
a lot of focus. However, letting everyone you know be surprised is kind of worth it Shangela – You know when we film something we have to hold everything that happens confidential. It’s difficult, but it’s part of the process. Honestly, I have been working so much, and that made it a lot easier.
Is there something about you that the fans would be surprised to know?
Kennedy – No, I am pretty much an open book Bebe – That I am very goofy and silly. When
kennedy davenport 28 | Hotspots.LGBT
people meet me at the Meet and Greets they are surprised. Trixie – Outside of drag I am somewhat withdrawn. AS Ru Paul says “I am an introvert that masquerades as an extrovert” Shangela – I am pretty much an open book. They know if they meet me in real life they
are getting the exact same person they see on TV! Wait, I know, my fans may not know that I am a big fan of Game of Thrones.
What’s does the future hold for you?
Kennedy – My music single “Moving Up” just
dropped on itunes today. The Video for the ssingle is on my website. I am going to go work on some more music and continue to tour the world. My dream is to get on Broadway. Bebe – I just launched a kick starter to release the film product called “Being Bebe,” which has documented me for the last 12 years of my artistry. I am also in the studio working on a new album and working on a Jungle Kitty Tour. Trixie – Well my album has just come out and I am about to embark on a 40 city tour of the United States. The Trixie and Katya Show (now featuring Bob the Drag Queen) is still on Viceland every Wed at 10:30. Shangela – I came in the door as a working girl professional and I am leaving the door
shangela as a working girl professional…LOL! I have a new song called “Pay Me” that just dropped on itunes yesterday. I will be appearing in Bianca Del Rio’s sequel in Hurricane Bianca 2. I also have a role in the Lady Gaga’s film called “A Star is Born,” which is directed by Bradley Cooper. Also I have written a new stand-up comedy “Shangela is Shook” and it is touring the UK in April and Australia in December and then back to the US. I am also Co-Producing “Werq The World” which will tour 17 cities in Europe in the end of May.
One question for the winner, Trixie… What are you doing with the money? Trixie Mattel

On March 24th and 25th, thousands of people will flock to Lake Worth’s Bryant Park for a two-day celebration of pride in the LGBTQ community. The festival (formerly known as Pridefest) will also serve as the launch of Compass’ 30 year anniversary. In 1988, a concerned group of men and women joined together to form the Stop AIDS Project of South Florida, Inc. Their goal was to educate individuals on the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS and provide direct services to those already living with the virus. In the years that followed, in response

to changing needs, the group reformed as Compass and its purpose expanded to provide a focal point for LGBTQ community engagement and support. The two-day event sees people of all ages and backgrounds join together in celebration. The highlight of the weekend is the milelong LGBTQ Pride Parade that takes place on March 25th and will feature SMART Ride founders Glen Weinzimer and John Rogatzki as Grand Marshals. Led by the Wells Fargo Stage Coach, thousands of people, organizations and businesses participate in the parade as
it winds its way through Downtown Lake Worth into Bryant Park. This year’s Pride Parade theme is “Rainbow Resistance” as a response to the current political climate and its infringement on the forward progress of the LGBTQ community. “Pride is the biggest weekend of the year to unite, celebrate, and support our community, and we are grateful to all of the people and organizations who participate and make it happen,” said Julia Murphy, Chief Development Officer. The annual Pride weekend festivities, sponsored in part by Wells Fargo, the SMART Ride, CAN Community Health and PNC Bank, include over 100 vendors , art exhibits, and great food. This year’s entertainment will feature U.S. Billboard Play Artist CeCe Peniston, Scarlett Santana from the group C+C Music Factory, an singer Sammulous from America’s Got Talent. Emceed by Melissa St. John and RaeJean Cox, Pride entertainment will also include local celebrities from the KVJ show on 97.9 WRMF, as well as international DJ Citizen Jane, and Velvet Lenore. More importantly, Palm Beach Pride emphasizes the importance of diversity in the community, making that community stronger and more accepting of all individuals and their contributions to society. The Pub Wilton Manors
“Whether you’re looking to nosh on something to soak up the liquor...The Pub’s menu offers something that even the pickiest of eaters will enjoy!” |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
By Nick Cirillo
With a mix of locals and tourists, the social atmosphere of The Pub is the perfect gathering spot to grab a bite to eat, relax with a cocktail and people watch. Since its opening in 2012, The Pub (formerly known as Village Pub) has not only established itself as a gathering place for people from
78 | Hotspots.LGBT
all walks of life; however, with the reopening of their kitchen and a remodel that included many more tables, they are also establishing themselves as a new eatery on the drive. Whether you’re looking to nosh on something to soak up the liquor, like their Nachos ($10), or are looking to chow down on
a burger, The Pub’s menu offers something that even the pickiest of eaters will enjoy! My boyfriend and I visited The Pub on a Friday night, and boy was it packed…it was only 8pm and there was only standing room! Once we found a table, we ordered drinks and jammed out to the 80s music that was blasting while we looked over the menu. The first items we noticed were the Charcuterie ($12) and Bloody Mary Shrimp Cocktail ($11) appetizers. We were pleasantly surprised by the presentation and portion size of each when they arrived at the table. The Charcuterie, a variety of Artisan meats and cheeses, was served on a newspaper lined tray with buttered crostini, whole grain mustard, roasted red peppers and gherkin pickles. The numerous combinations of the different meats and cheeses will have your taste buds wanting more! Being served in a martini glass, the Bloody Mary Shrimp Cocktail had heads turning as it made its way to the table. From the jumbo Tiger shrimp poached in a citrus Old Bay broth to the Bloody Mary cocktail sauce that fills the bottom of the glass, this appetizer proves that martinis are not the only happiness served in that glass! Once we ordered our main dishes, which I’ll talk
about in a minute, my eyes were pulled back to the appetizers section of the menu. If you like warm balls in your mouth (insert the typical gay pun here haha), then their Pretzel Bites ($7) are right up your alley. Let me start this off by saying that this is probably their BEST appetizer! The bite-sized pretzel
The Pub Wilton Manors 2283 Wilton Dr. Wilton Manors, FL 33305 754.200.5244 Thepubwm.com
balls are roasted with butter and sea salt and served with cheese on the side…in other words, they are HEAVEN! After all that, we had some room left for the entrees somehow. We chose the Chicken Tenders ($10) and the Italian Chicken Sandwich ($10). We opted for the grilled tenders (you can also get them fried), and they were cooked to perfection. These juicy tenders were served with fresh, hand-cut fries and BBQ, Dijon Honey Mustard, Ranch, Blue Cheese or hot sauce. The sandwich was huge and consisted of grilled chicken breast, mozzarella cheese and pesto aioli on a toasted hoagie roll. A generous portion of their handcut fries complete this dish of deliciousness! The Pub has also been very supportive of the local community by hosting fundraisers for charities such as Kids in Distress, The Pet Project, the
AIDS Walk, The Smart Ride, Poverello, as well as many other local charitable organizations and sporting associations such as softball and bowling. Although they are open until 2am Sunday thru Thursday and until 3am on Friday and Saturday, The Pub’s kitchen closes at 9pm, so get there early and grab a table. Valet parking is available, which means you don’t have to fight for parking on those crowded nights on the drive! From drag shows to game shows to music from your favorite Broadway shows, The Pub always has something going on
throughout the week. Stop on in, grab some food and see what all the hype is about. You never know who you may meet at The Pub! Don’t forget to tell them HotSpots! sent you!

MIKE HUCKABEE BY D’ANNE WITKOWSKI
I
don’t listen to a lot of country music. In fact, since Trump’s “election” I haven’t listened to anything other than heavy metal (it’s honestly the only music that makes sense right now). Still, I do love me some Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton. So, when I heard that former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee had joined and then resigned from the CMA Foundation, I first thought that he’d been invited to be a presenter at the Country Music Awards, but then someone was like, “Wait, he tells terrible jokes and is also a very terrible person,” and he was struck from the list. It turns out CMA stands for Country Music Association, not Awards, and the CMA Foundation supports music education in schools. But other than that my imagined scenario turns out to be pretty accurate. Lots of people were unhappy with Huckabee’s appointment, including Monument Records and Sandbox Entertainment owner Jason Owen, whose roster includes names like Faith Hill and Kacey Musgraves. Owen, who is gay, made it clear to the CMA that so long as Huckabee was on board, he wasn’t. “Huckabee speaks of the sort of things that would suggest my family is morally beneath his and uses language that has a profoundly negative impact upon young people all across this country,” Owen wrote in a letter. Clearly the CMA saw how unwise it would be to essentially trade Huckabee for Faith Hill. Also maybe not a good look to have an NRA lapdog on board after the largest mass shooting in the U.S. just happened at a country music concert a few months ago. Understandably, Huckabee got his anti-gay feelings hurt. “Until recently, the arts was the one place America could set aside political, geographical, racial, religious, and economic barriers and come together,” Huckabee wrote. “If the arts community becomes part of the polarization instead of bridging communities
and people over the power of civil norms as reflected in the arts, then we as a civilization may not be long for this earth.” I don’t know what Huckabee’s definition of “recently” is, but that nonsense has literally never been true. While the arts can build bridges between people, art is hardly apolitical. Art has always been a means of resistance against oppression and a way to fight the silencing of diverse voices. As for civilization not being “long for this earth,” wait until he finds out who his daughter works for. Ha ha just kidding. Huckabee loves Trump almost as much as he loves guns. So a gay man who refuses to be quiet about about his own dehumanization by a very public political figure is a bully. Got it. What about an entire party that has embraced a racist, sexist and homophobic agenda that values guns and money above human lives? Then again, “bullies” isn’t a strong enough word to describe the Republican Party. So please allow me to play the world’s smallest violin to accompany Huckabee’s tears. Actually, to keep with the country music theme here, make that the world’s smallest fiddle.
