MacArthur Park Is Melting Home décor is having a disco moment.
EVER WANTED TO BRING THE PARTY HOME? WELL, NOW YOU CAN. And you don't even need an app. The design world is having a major disco moment. One of the year's hottest exhibitions is “Night Fever: Designing Club Culture 1960 – Today” at the Vitra Design Museum in Germany (through September 9), a celebration of nightclub creativity and culture from Piper in Turin in the '60s, to NYC's Studio 54 in the '70s, to The Hacienda in Manchester in the '80s, to Rem Koolhaas' proposal for a new Ministry of Sound in London today. Tastemakers are looking back fondly at Halston and Italy's Radical Design movement, and the result is a bumper crop of club-centric furnishings that'll help you transform your crib into a Boogie Wonderland. Leading the charge is Gufram, the Italian furniture maker whose iconic Pop Artinspired designs, such as the lip-shaped Bocca sofa and Cactus coatrack, have always been

way out. Last month at Europe's premiere furniture fair, Salone del Mobile in Milan, the company introduced its latest collection, Disco Gufram, a collaboration with three up-andcoming design studios. Dutch duo Robin Stam and Joeri Horstink of Rotganzen dreamed up the After Party line of minimalist lacquered cabinets and coffee tables, each topped with a mirror ball that appears to be melting. Alberto Biagetti and Laura Baldassari of Milan's Atelier Biagetti updated five pieces from Gufram's archive, including the modular (and tubular) Jimmy sofa, which they decked out in a spill-friendly gold pleather. And Gaëlle Gabillet and Stéphane Villard of Paris' GGSV unveiled their Dance Floor line of carpets with bold, geometric designs. I think I'll take one of each. So, if you're looking for the party, you can ring my bell.

pisode 8 of RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10 began with a Mini Challenge called “Slap Out of It,” where the girls had to be super sassy and motivate Ru to slap the hell out of them. Asia O'Hara was the winner and received a $2,000 gift card to Sparkles Rhinestones. The Maxi Challenge was a tribute to that eternal diva, Cher. The girls were cast in “Cher – The Unauthorized Rusical,” with each playing the superstar at a different era of her career. The runway category was “Glitterific,” and the guest judges were comedian Billy Eichner and Broadway and TV star Andrew Rannells. In the end, Cameron was the clear winner and received a Sofitel L.A. luxury VIP getaway. Asia and The Vixen were in the bottom two. It was a fierce lip sync battle, but in the end it was The Vixen sashaying away.
THE VIXEN Hotspots.LGBT | 25
At what age did you first become interested in drag, and how did you pick your name? I think I was 20. At the time, I was in college and very androgynous. I liked to play with different types of hair, makeup, and fashion, so it happened naturally. I always liked looking at pinup girls online, and the word “vixen” was frequently next to those pics, so that's what I picked for my name when I started drag.
How many times did you apply to be on RuPaul's Drag Race? How did it feel when you found out you had been chosen? I applied four times, and finally getting on was very validating. The year before I got cast was the favorite year of my career, so it validated all that hard work. Is there additional pressure now that RuPaul's Drag Race has been on for nine seasons plus three seasons of All Stars? Absolutely, the expectations are very high for Season 10. They are expecting everything to be bigger and better.
Tell us about your Drag Race experience? It was very surreal. And polarizing. But I went in wanting to make my presence known and, as a political queen, I wanted to bring political issues to the forefront. I feel like I checked my boxes and accomplished a lot.
What's your marital status? If single, what are you looking for in a man? I have a boyfriend, but what attracts me is talent. Who do you want to win and why? I'm rooting for everybody black.
Are you excited about performing in South Florida this Saturday at The Manor? Yes, I am. I've only been to Florida once. It was for a show, and the crowd was really good, so I can't wait to come back! What's ahead for The Vixen? My next goal is to take over the mothertucking world. I am putting out political art

Love is Love Disobedience star Rachel Weisz talks about her new — and upcoming — Sapphic tales. By Chris Azzopardi 38 | Hotspots.LGBT
Rachel Weisz has strong feelings about makers of queer films discussing their work with queer media. To not do so, she says, would be “ridiculous and wrong and unthinkable.” As producer and star of Disobedience, a tale of forbidden love between women, Weisz is definitely talking to LGBTQ media. The 48-year-old British actress had been on a quest to tell more female-centric stories, which led her to an array of feminist books, including Naomi Alderman’s 2006 novel. She optioned the film rights to Disobedience, then found her director: Sebastián Lelio, the Chilean filmmaker behind 2013’s Gloria and A Fantastic Woman, the 2018 Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film. In Disobedience, Weisz portrays Ronit, a lapsed Jew now living as a photographer in New York City who returns to the Orthodox Jewish London enclave she grew up in to attend her rabbi father’s funeral. There, her childhood friend and lover Esti (Rachel McAdams), now married to Ronit’s father’s protégé Dovid (Alessandro Nivola), is emboldened by her rekindled passion for Ronit to pursue her own path to self-discovery and, ultimately, religious freedom. tress Oscar in 2006 — has further feminist ambitions: She’ll play a queer woman in the upcoming historical drama The Favourite before portraying British military surgeon Dr. James Barry, a 19thcentury woman born Margaret Ann Bulkley, who disguised herself as a man to become a doctor. Can you just produce queer stories for the rest of your career? Yes, please. Do you have any books to point me toward?
I think you’re probably up on lesbian lit more than I am. I hear you got deep into it. I read a few books.
The team behind Call Me By Your Name did almost no LGBTQ media. But you’ve been everywhere talking about Disobedience: mainstream press, queer press. I feel like some marketers think we’re living in a time when gay is mainstream, so niche media sometimes
get overlooked. So, thank you for not overlooking us. As a producer, why is it important to reach out to queer media with a film like Disobedience? If you’re queer, your subjectivity is not in the margins — it’s front and center for the life you’re leading. But mainstream stories have pushed queer stories into the margins — and I think that’s what’s so wonderful about Sebastián. His film [Gloria] before A Fantastic Woman wasn’t a queer story, but it was about a 58-year-old woman’s dating life and her sex life — again, something that in storytelling is not front and center. A Fantastic Woman was about the experience of a trans woman. And this film is about two queer women struggling to be free to love who they want to love. So, I’ve gotta say, hats off to Sebastián. He does the opposite of objectifying things; he subjectivizes things. And yeah, in terms of speaking to queer outlets? It’s essential. How could we make this film and then push you into the margins? That would be ridiculous and wrong and unthinkable.
What measures did you take to avoid falling into the male-fantasy trap that so many lesbian films end up in? I can’t claim that I did anything apart from entrust[ing] myself to Sebastián’s point of view. I knew he doesn’t objectify women or men, or anybody. He has empathy, and he makes [characters] into real people. Rachel McAdams and I just trusted him. The male gaze doesn’t always have to be objectifying. [Sebastián’s] point of view on how these women desire each other, I find it beautiful. He’s the auteur. He authored the whole film, and the story; I can’t claim anything apart from being clever enough to trust him. [Laughs.] Some people felt the gaze in Blue is the Warmest Color, the critically acclaimed 2013 lesbian love story, was male and, therefore, problematic. Are there any problematic lesbian or queer films you’d seen prior to Disobedience that were on your mind while shooting?
Hotspots.LGBT | 39
No. I did see Blue is the Warmest Color, and I enjoyed it. Listen, just to see a woman loving a woman being represented was very exciting. I liked the film very much. But no — I didn’t have a “To Do or Not to Do” list, and I certainly didn’t research lesbian films. I looked into my heart and how I love this person. It was very emotional and vulnerable, full of yearning. I didn’t have any other references in my mind. I don’t believe Rachel
McAdams did either. We certainly never talked about it. I just loved this person, this woman.
What parts of yourself did you tap into for a role that centers on same-sex desire? It doesn’t feel any different. It felt different in that it’s softer and more vulnerable. That might not be true with all women, but certainly with Esti it was. [Our characters] had been childhood friends and we’d known each other. We had a huge history and we were in love. She was my first love, and yeah, it felt like love. I didn’t have to open a different door in my brain; she’s just the person I loved. So, I didn’t really think of it in those terms.
WORKING MOTHER A pregnant Weisz at the Montclair Film Festival in April.
“I would love to play more queer women. So, yeah, anyone who has any ideas...”
Prior to Disobedience, what’s the closest you’d come to playing a lesbian character? I’ve never played a queer character at all.
Have scripts come your way and you’ve turned them down? Oh, great question! I’ve been offered very few. Maybe there are more being written now, but in my career, I think I was offered once a script about a straight woman who had an affair [with a woman], but the story didn’t — I
Let’s talk about how liberating their sex scene is: Do you hope it might influence other queer people who feel pressure to live an inauthentic life? I hope this film is inspiring to anyone who feels like they’re not free to love who they want to love. We’re saying that love can be an act of defiance, and sometimes one has to be disobedient to the social norms around us. To be free, sometimes it costs a lot; it’s not always easy. So, I’m not going to glibly say, “Just do it.” It’s hard. It’s really hard. But I hope the film is inspiring, but also realistic. It shows the incredible struggle that Esti goes through with her sexual identity. I hope it will inspire people.
MOTH TO A FLAME McAdams and Weisz share a moment in Disobedience.
Aren’t you playing actress Olivia Colman’s lover in the period drama, The Favourite? Oh yeah, in my next film. She’s a married woman, but she’s also my lover and confidant and best friend and adviser, and really is actually running England. [Laughs.] Or so she thinks. But yeah, they’re lovers. They’ve been lovers for years.
Before all these queer-oriented roles, you played the Wicked Witch of the East in Oz the Great and Powerful. What do you think that did for your gay following? I didn’t know it did anything for a gay following! I’d love for that to be true. Is that true?
It’s Oz, so I’d say so. Oh, that’s fantastic! She’s a strong kind, yeah. That’s fabulous. Thank you. I actually wanted to play her like Tim Curry in The Rocky Horror Picture Show. And my dad is nearly 90. They had me in their 40s. They had gay friends — homosexual male friends — but I wouldn’t say they understood in the way that my generation understands queerness. I guess they were kind of sheltered, I would say. How are you raising your 11-year-old son, Henry? He is just of a generation where he’s kind of — [it’s as if] he’s colorblind. He just doesn’t think in categories. He thinks in a very free way, that people should just love who they love. He sees everyone as just part of the human race. He doesn’t really see difference at all, so that’s good.
You have another child on the way, with your husband Daniel Craig. If one of your children came out to you one day as queer, how do you imagine you would respond? TIME to SHINE As he prepares to compete for the title International Mr. Leather, Scot Blumstein, Mr. Ramrod, talks pageants, pups, über masculinity, and Barbra.
or most Americans, Memorial Day weekend marks the (unof icial) start of summer and, weather permitting, the itinerary is built around outdoor activities: parades, pool parties, barbecues, baseball games, and maybe an inaugural jaunt to the beach. In the leather community, things are… a little different. Memorial Day weekend is when the International Mr. Leather competition, perhaps the premiere leather event of the year, is held in Chicago, and the festivities — few of which occur outdoors, oddly enough — include a host of title competitions, a leather market (shopping!), massive dance parties, kink seminars, puppy yoga, fetish demonstrations, and a number of informal events (for 3 to 300) that don't appear on the of icial calendar.

It's part pageant, part pigfest, and a helluva good time. Or so I've heard. Last October, Scot Blumstein, a former runner-up, earned the title of Mr. Ramrod, so he'll be proudly sporting that sash — and hoping to snatch another one — in Chicago next weekend. We caught up with Scot for a little chat as he was breaking in the new leather he'll be wearing on stage. —Bill Henning

who they know. How would you respond to those perceptions? The winners are picked by earning points for their interview, gear, and personality. It's like a job interview, and the judges are looking for the best candidate. Sometimes they get it right, and sometimes they blow it. Having a title opens doors and offers you opportunities. It also puts a target on your back. You are the face and name, and that comes with responsibility. Three years ago I was irst runner-up. I decided to be the best irst runner up that I could be. started working out, showing skin, and getting attention. Ramrod was a revelation. It felt like home.
What keeps you coming back? It's a fun bar, with great music and friendly people. Now that I'm Mr. Ramrod, I go to represent, meet, and mingle. When I go to events in other cities and I wear my title sash, everyone knows the bar, and they want to share their Ramrod stories.

I saw a brief bio of you online that reads, “He enjoys gardening, the music of Barbra Streisand, going to the gym, and the leather subculture.” Exactly how much do you love Barbra? I really love Barbra Streisand! Through her talent and sheer will she made others see her beauty. She changed the concept of what was considered attractive. When I was lonely, depressed, or heartbroken, her music and her movies consoled me. She was an outsider who made good, so I thought I could do the same.
How long have you been going to Ramrod? I've been going to Ramrod since it opened 24 years ago. I'm usually there every weekend. It's my home bar.
What irst drew you to the place? When I lived in New York, I was a preppy boy who worked on Wall Street. When I moved to South Florida in 1995, there were three leather bars: The Eagle, Jackhammer, and Ramrod. I walked into Ramrod and saw these muscular, masculine men wearing harnesses and bar vests, and I thought that they were the sexiest men I'd ever seen. I wanted to be like them. You've been hosting monthly Leather Incursions for the last three years. What happens when a group of leathermen and women show up unannounced at a bar, club, or restaurant that's not a regular leather haunt? Leather Incursions were started to demystify and humanize the leather scene. We want the general public to see us and become comfortable around us — and to ask questions. Usually, by the end of the night, the owner or manager [of the venue] will come over and say, “You guys are fun and spend money. You are welcome back anytime.”
Do you ind that a lot of gay men have masculinity issues — whether that means consciously embracing all things masculine, rejecting all those things, or just being insecure in their masculinity? What's your take? As a kid I was called “sissy” and “fairy” and made fun of. As a young adult I felt empowered wearing a leather motorcycle jacket. I embraced ü ber masculinity because it made me feel more con ident. I carry myself differently when I wear leather, and people treat and respond to me in a different way. You're a member of the South Florida Minotaurs and a former board member of The Lambda Men's Brotherhood, and
you do volunteer work for both The SMART Ride and the Comprehensive AIDS Program in West Palm Beach. Have you always been a joiner? I've been doing volunteer work since I was in high school. As a young queer kid in the '70s, I wasn't popular or accepted. Volunteering was a way for me to meet people and feel like I was a part of something.
noticed any scenes, fetishes, toys, or tools that are gathering steam? Puppy play and puppy gear is huge and becoming a big part of the scene, as is rubber gear and neoprene. The next generation has a new vitality and enthusiasm. I'm curious to see how they will impact the scene as they get more involved.
What're you gonna do if you win International Mr. Leather? Off to Disney? It's easier for me to handle things in small pieces. My personal goal this year was to enjoy and experience MAL [Mid-Atlantic Leather Weekend] in D.C., then enjoy CLAW [Cleveland Leather Annual Weekend], and now to soak in the brotherhood of IML. I get overwhelmed when I think of the big picture. If I win, I will continue to support and represent Ramrod and the South Florida leather community. I really couldn't do this job without the support and love of my partner Randy Goforth, who has been with me every step of the way. Or without the guidance and support of my mentors: Rich Rodriguez, Jason Pelky, Bill Hoeppner, Kirk Ruben, and Bearman. And, of course, my sponsors: Ramrod, LeatherWerks, Stompers Boots, Paul Michael Leather, Pervyology, and Tribal Son.
When I go to events in other cities and I wear my title sash, everyone wants to share their Ramrod stories.
Besides the Leather Incursions, you host or promote a bunch of other events, including the monthly Enforced Dress Code party at Ramrod, Drag Bingo at Georgie's Alibi, Fetish Rendezvous at Southern Nights, and Onyx Deep South Events. Have you always been a Julie McCoy? I've always been an organizer. When I moved here, I was an outsider looking to get involved, searching for a brotherhood and a community. That was dif icult for me to ind. I'm basically a shy person. Promoting events was a way to help me get out of my shell by focusing on making others feel welcome.
You drive down to Fort Lauderdale from West Palm Beach several nights a week for events. Are you a full-time leatherman, or is there also a day job? I wear leather every day to show my support and commitment to leather, even if it's wearing just a wristband. I have a landscape design business.
How can people get onto your weekly email blast? I post the blast on my Facebook page, so they can friend me. I send the blast out via text every Wednesday, so people can plan their weekends.
Do you see young queers still coming into the leather scene? Yes, I do. I walk around Ramrod every weekend and introduce myself and say hello to everyone. I see young men there, and they are excited to embrace the scene. What's new in the leather scene? Have you 48 | Hotspots.LGBT

It’s not topaz. It’s not Emerald. Ruby is the theme at this year’s Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce 17 Annual Gala and Awards Celebration. The event will boast a pioneer, a curator, some pop-ups a fantastic silent auction, and a moonlight Soiree. It will also feature some awards, as “The Ruby Gala” will once again honor corporate and individual supporters of the Miami-Dade LGBTQ community. To catch all the fun and excitement, guests are encouraged to get their tickets before they surely sell out. The Ruby Gala will take place Saturday, May 19, at the Hilton Miami Downtown, 1601 Biscayne Boulevard, and will once again be presented by Wells Fargo. When asked about the fabulous honorees, Steve Atkins, President/CEO of the MDGLCC, said: “Once again, MDGLCC has four incredible award recipients to honor at the Ruby Gala

on May 19th! Each one represents, in their unique way, the finest qualities in service to community, commitment to diversity and, a selflessness that we look for in our honorees. For Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and, YES Institute, the awards recognize years of supporting the LGBT Community through outreach and/or training & development. For Vicki Brail and Roger Thomson, their recognition is for a lifetime of dedication and philanthropy to the LGBT community.”
Steve went on to say: “The Chamber’s annual gala celebration is one of our most popular and definitely our best-attended event of the year. AT&T Business of the Year Award Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood
Regions Business Person of the Year Award Vicki Brail
AIDS Healthcare Foundation NonProfit Organization of the Year Award YES Institute Morgan Stanley Bob Balsam Civic Achievement Award Roger Thomson
We anticipate a sell-out crowd of 500 guests who will mix, mingle, party and pass out stacks of business cards, all while honoring community leaders who have contributed to the enhancement of the South Florida LGBTQ community.”
The Pioneer alluded to is the Pioneer Winter Collective which will be the featured entertainment at the gala. Pioneer Winter is a Miamibased choreographer and director of the Pioneer Winter Collective— invested in physical theater, contemporary dance, interdisciplinary collaboration, and transmedia. His Collective provides a platform for risk-taking, progressive, and experimental projects by democratizing performance through unexpected bodies, unexpected places, and unexpected social change. Described as avant-garde, experimental, raw and fearless, the Collective blurs the boundaries between physical theatre and contemporary dance. The Pioneer Winter Collective creates experiences that are provoking, progressive, and risk-taking: unexpected bodies in unexpected places, producing unexpected social change - powerful stories and voices. The premium silent auction items will encompass a wide range in categories -- arts & culture, food and dining, health and wellness, leisure, retail, sports, and travel & lodging. For the perfect Staycation guests will be able to bid on a two-night stay at the fabulous Marriott Stanton South Beach and complement it with a one-day
rental of a luxury car and tickets to a show at the Adrienne Arsht Center.
The Gala’s moonlight is the Moonlight Networking Soiree, which takes place after the awards ceremony. The Moonlight Networking Soiree rounds out the evening and allows guests to continue making connections while enjoying the open bar by Bacardi, featuring Grey Goose Vodka. The 17th Annual Gala starts at 6 pm with a reception, silent auction, and interactive pop-up displays, which will be followed by a grand buffet, the awards presentation and Moonlight Networking.
According to Jorge Richa, Marketing and Program Director, “The Ruby Gala has been designed in such a way that guests will have ample opportunities to engage, connect, and network with each other while enjoying the cocktail reception, silent auction, interactive pop-ups, grand buffet, awards ceremony, and moonlight networker.” Tickets to The Ruby Gala are all VIP again this year, Adkins said. Tickets are $2,000 for tables of 10, or $200 for individual tickets, and include reserved seating, the grand buffet, an open bar, a VIP gift bag (my favorite), and participation in the drawing. Reservations are available online at gaybizgala.com, or by calling 305- 673-4440.

Nestled between Commercial and Oakland Park Boulevards on North Federal Highway is where you’ll find the trendy, art-filled restaurant Mojo. Once inside, Mojo works its magic not only on your taste buds, but also on your ears, eyes, and liver. From weekly live music, to the owner’s own artwork
hanging on the walls, to a great selection of cocktails, this place is redefining the restaurant scene up in Coral Ridge. Opened in 2010, Mojo is the brainchild of New Jersey natives — and partners, in both business and life — Anthony DeMaio and Domenick Falcione. The place feels like
a family business, which is how the owners like it. “When you walk in the door, you’re in our house!” declares DeMaio. While DeMaio oversees the dining room, Executive Chef Falcione adds his personal mojo to every plate that comes out of the kitchen. But your plate is

not the only you’ll experience Falcione’s handiwork in the front of the restairant: The dining room walls are hung with the chef’s massive abstract paintings. See a piece you like? Well, you’re in luck because you can purchase any of his canvases — and add a little Mojo to your own place.

Many of Mojo’s menu items have been in Chef Falcoine’s repertoire for over 30 years. But a few fell victim to a force Floridians know all too well: Hurricane Irma. Just as the storm changed the landscape late last summer, she also drove DeMaio and Falcione to update some items on Mojo’s menu. Fan favorites like the Duck Breast ($28), 10oz Pork Chop ($26), and Salmon ($26) were rethought. Fortunately, guests have only raved about the new, elevated dishes. From the moment I opened the menu, I knew I was in trouble: I wanted one of everything. But my eyes quickly zeroed right in on the Beef Carpaccio ($16), one of my all-time favorite appetizers, and a dish not many places offer these days. Deliciously tender raw beef is thinly sliced, drizzled with a spicy aioli, and topped with arugula, then finished with shaved Reggiano Parmesan and a drizzle of truffle oil. This savory masterpiece practically melts in your mouth. For main courses, we chose the Home Style Meatloaf ($22) and one of Mojo’s “Fan Favorites,” the Duck Breast ($28). I hate to say it, but the meatloaf was better 68 | Hotspots.LGBT
than my mom’s (Ma, if you happen to be reading this, my editor added that part. I swear!), and that is hard to achieve. From the roasted-garlic mashed potatoes, to the French green beans, to the shiitake-bacon-onion gravy, this dish is the comfort food we could all use these days. I’m not a huge fan of mashed potatoes, but Chef Domenick’s roasted-garlic spuds had my mouth watering, I’ve been absolutely feening for them ever since, As for the Duck Breast, after the first bite we immediately understood why guests rave about this signature entrée. The moist flesh was pan-seared to perfection and presented beautifully. Topped with a brandied-fig and brown-sugar sauce, and served with sautéed French beans and rosemary-spiked risotto, this dish gave us life! And the portions at Mojo are generous, so the life it gives will be a full one.
From the moment I opened the menu, I knew I was in trouble: I wanted one of everything.

Take, for A little about Bridenstine: He received a example, another recent appointee: Rep. Jim zero on the Human Rights Campaign’s latest Bridenstine (R-OK). boys to be scouts. In 2013, they lifted that ban. And Bridenstine was not having it. “Some of us in America still believe in the concept of sexual morality, that sex is intended for one man and one woman within the institution of marriage. Organizations that hold this philosophy and promote it among our youth should be commended, or at least you would think, tolerated,” Bridenstine said in a speech on the House floor. “Unfortunately, the intolerant left bullies and browbeats private organizations like the Boy Scouts into accepting their philosophy. Notice they didn’t start their own organization. They went after the Boy Scouts of America.” Darn those gays and that intolerant left, so lazy they wouldn’t even start their own separate-but-equal group for gay and/or “sexually immoral” scouts! “The left’s agenda is not about tolerance, and it’s not about diversity of thought,” Bridenstine continued. “It's about presenting a worldview of relativism, where there is no
right and wrong.” Ah, the old “gays don’t even know right from wrong” argument. It’s a short jump from there to talking about penises and butts. While I could make a joke about how Bridenstine should be launched into space where he can start his own right-wing moon colony, I will not. I believe the work NASA does is important, and I’m disappointed to see someone in charge who not only doesn’t seem to value that work, but who also besmirches the legacy of astronaut Sally Ride. It’s because of people like Bridenstine that Ride didn’t come out as a lesbian until her obituary. She and her partner of 27 years, Tam O’Shaughnessy, deserved better. America deserves better, too.

HOT BODIES
Sleep Your Way to Big Gains
When do muscles recover and grow? Between workouts. by Tom Bonanti
T
here's nothing like the exhilaration you feel at the end of a kick-ass workout. There's a physical rush plus a real sense of accomplishment — and, let's face it, you look hot AF in the mirror right after you've gotten your pump on. Those pleasurable feelings can be more than a little addictive. But don't let your craving for that fix derail your progress. No matter how good your pump feels, you shouldn't work out every day. Taking time off from the gym is essential to achieving your fitness goals. An overall rest and recovery program is essential for every athlete or fitness enthusiast who's serious about making progress. All exercise, from aerobics to weight training, is about breaking down muscle fibers and challenging them to adapt and grow. After high-intensity activity, a
82 | Hotspots.LGBT
muscle requires anywhere from 48 to 72 hours to repair and build. Right now, if you're feeling a little sore, lethargic, or burned out on your training, you may need to introduce an exercise, rest, and recovery program to your training cycle. Here are the eight most effective ways to speed recovery and facilitate gains after exercise.
12
1. Stick with H20. Before training drink nothing stronger than a cup of java; lose those preworkout drinks with their excess sugar and exotic herbs. What should you drink during your workout? Water. It'll keep you alert and energized, and after the gym it'll help you replace fluids lost through perspiration. 2. Go Mental. Don't underestimate the power of the body-mind connection. Before every workout (or competition), take a little time to meditate, do some visualization, or give yourself a pep talk.
5 6
5. Chill, Dude. To help muscle fibers recover and grow after a heavy-duty session with weights, let them rest. That doesn't mean you have to be a total couch potato on days off. Employ active rest: Ease up on heavy training and engage in less strenuous — and more pleasurable — activities such as walking, swimming, or yoga.
After high-intensity activity, a muscle requires anywhere from 48 to 72 hours to repair and build
3
3. Stretch It Out. Take time to stretch before an aerobic activity like running or swimming. When weight training, stretch between sets — then after your workout to promote recovery.
4
4. Cycle Your Training. The best way to avoid over-training, burnout, and injury is to periodize or cycle your training. Work different muscle groups on different days. Split up your training days, and be sure to include rest days to facilitate growth and recovery. Regularly introduce new exercises to keep challenging your muscles.
6. Work at Recovery. Cool down after a workout with light stretching, deep breathing techniques, or even some very light cardio. To amp up muscle and joint recovery consider adding massage, sauna, or a little hot-tub time.
7. Eat Heartily. You've got to eat to grow, so chow down within 60 minutes after working out. Eat complex carbs to replenish depleted energy stores. Quality proteins will foster muscle recovery and growth.
7 8
8. Hit the Pillow. During sleep your body recovers. Damage caused by exertion and stress is healed. The pituitary gland pumps Human Growth Hormone (HGH) – yes, your body makes its own HGH – throughout the body to facilitate tissue growth and repair. Want big gains? Get your Zzzzzzzzzzz's.

deep inside | HOLLYWOOD By Romeo San Vicente Someone at Netflix deserves a cookie bouquet for this one.
LILY COLLINS DOES NOT CLASH WITH TITAN We've liked Lily Collins since we first saw her cute up the screen as Snow White in the fairly odd fairy tale movie Mirror Mirror. Then we found out she was the daughter of Phil Collins — imagine growing up hearing “In the Air Tonight” every time you went to the grocery store and realizing you had to live up to that; it's sobering — and we became even more fond.
TALES OF THE CITY, NOW WITH ELLEN PAGE Just when you were fully annoyed and extremely tired and actually angry (hey, Roseanne!) at all the TV reboots and revivals, here comes the promise of 10 new episodes of Armistead Maupin's Tales of The City on Netflix to make everything OK again. The good news? It's a continuation of the beloved stories you've read and watched since the 1970s (if you were a books-first fan) and/or the '90s (if you were converted by the PBS and Showtime installments back in the day), so there'll be no rehashing the past, and Lauren Morelli (Orange is The New Black) is the showrunner. 96 | Hotspots.LGBT
Meanwhile, original cast member Laura Linney is back as Mary Ann, picking up where she left off, and for this batch of stories, her now-adult

daughter, Shawna, will be played by Ellen Page (Gaycation). Making it even sweeter? Anna Madrigal is still high and kicking, and Olympia Dukakis has already signed on to bring her back to life.
LILY COLLINS Well, Collins just got herself attached to the latest offering from queer writer-director Austin Bunn (Kill Your Darlings) and legendary indie producer Christine Vachon. Titan is the title, it's being called a “survival thriller,” and it's the story of a young musician (Collins) on a mission to find out what happened to her older sister, an environmental activist killed in a seemingly accidental fall. When our heroine digs up the past, however, she puts herself in danger. This is the first bit of information on the flick — it's not even on Collins' IMDB page yet — so don't expect to be survival-thrilled until at least 2019 or later. Romeo San Vicente feels good if he just says the word “Sussudio.”

STILL WEEDING Olympia Dukakis will return as Anna Madrigal in Netflix’s Tales of the City.
