NEVER FORGET: THE ORIGINAL STONEWALL WAS A RIOT. Welcome to the Stonewall Pride edition of Hotspots. I remember attending the very first Stonewall Street Festival planning meeting at Galanga restaurant on Wilton Drive so many years ago. Today, it has evolved into the massive parade and Pride celebration we'll take part in on Saturday. The festival commemorates the Stonewall Riots of June 28, 1969, when NYC police brutally raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City's Greenwich Village, and patrons took to the streets in response. While we have made tremendous advances in LGBTQ rights since the riots, we still have a long way to go. Right now, the current administration is working to undo much of the good work done by those who have come before us. As you surely know, just last week the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Colorado baker who refused to make a cake for a same-sex wedding. While

many of us want to echo Robert De Niro's bleeped-out comments from this past Sunday's Tony Awards, we must remain steadfast and continue to fight the good fight. I was moved by the comments made by Andrew Garfield, who saluted the LGBTQ community in his acceptance speech for Lead Actor in a Play for his performance in Angels in America, saying, “Let's just bake a cake for everyone who wants a cake to be baked.” So, as we come together in Wilton Manors this weekend, remember to be thankful to the brave queers who stood up against hatred and bigotry in 1969. Many were beaten and incarcerated so that we can enjoy a better life. Yes, it's time to celebrate, but let's not forget all those who have fought — and continue to fight — for our right to love who we chose. Enjoy the festival!

There are few characters in books and film as wicked, selfish, and somehow as lovable as Emily Charlton from The Devil Wears Prada. Packin’ by the Pool

PHOTOS: NIKE, Inc.

Avoid unsightly swimwear bulges with Nike's Benassi “Fanny Pack” Slide.

While you were living it up at GayDays in Orlando, dancing, drinking, modeling, and doing shows by the pool, Nike was, as usual, all business: The athletic-wear behemoth quietly dropped the shoe of the summer. But which summer? 2018? Or… 1988? Jumping with both feet into the '80s fashion recrudescence, Nike has taken the lowly shower slide, the official footwear of vaguely international soccer hotties everywhere (socks optional), and updated (backdated?) it by turning the strap into a mini fanny pack. Throw in a couple neon colorways — the slides are available in magenta/black and turquoise/lime (as well as basic black, for party poopers) — and you've got the hottest Frankenshoe we've seen in a long time, and one that is 1988 down. British design mag i-D has dubbed the Benassi “Fanny Pack” Slide “the ugly summer shoe we need.” We're calling it the only summer shoe we need. Just zip keys, lip balm, a platinum card, and a small wad o' bills into the left one, and we're betting we can cram a StarTAC phone and a couple Magnums into the right. What time's the party? —Bill Henning

Season 10 Miz Cracker |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

by Scott Holland

Episode 11 of RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10 began with a Mini Challenge entitled “Resting Brunch Face, a tribute to brunch Sundays across the nation. The girls had 15 minutes to drag up pancakes and create a devastatingly delicious breakfast. The guest judge was American Horror Story's Cheyenne Jackson, and he picked Asia to be the winner of the $2,000 gift card from The Spa on Rodeo (as in Rodeo Drive, as in Beverly Hills). Ru then went on to say that we all have an inner saboteur before announcing that the Maxi Challenge would be for each queen to create two distinct characters: the first, to showcase herself at her best and brightest; the second, to be the first one's evil twin, the dark-side bitch that oozes negativity. They

would also have to write and record dialogue for both characters. When the girls presented these characters on the runway, Aquaria walked away (both of her!) with a well-deserved win. Her prize? A trip for two (actual people, I think, not personas) to… The Grand Resort and Spa, right here in Fort Lauderdale, plus two glam sets of Raden luggage. The bottom two girls were Miz Cracker and Cameron Michaels, and in the end Miz Cracker sashayed away. For the first time this season, I disagreed with Ru's choice. The two queens were about even in the lip sync, but Miz Cracker has a much stronger record on the show. At what age did drag become an interest? I wasn't interested in drag at all until Bob the Drag Queen forced me into it at 26. He did my makeup and turned me around, and that's all it took! How did you pick your name? My name came from my favorite snack, Brie on a cracker, which was my original name. That was too much for people, so I changed it to Miz Cracker.

40 | Hotspots.LGBT

How many times did you apply to be on RuPaul's Drag Race, and how did it feel when you found out you had been chosen? I applied two times, and I missed the phone call that I was cast because I was doing a stand-up comedy gig. I got the message like three hours later. That was the one day in four years I left my phone at home! Is there additional pressure now that RuPaul's Drag Race has been on for nine seasons plus three seasons of All Stars? Absolutely! Every season they up the ante. So, I was like, Girl, you have to bring it. But I'm a New York queen, and we are used to raising the bar. Tell us about your Drag Race experience? I can sum it up in one word: Bipolar. It was either the greatest triumphs of my career or the hardest days. What's your marital status? If single, what are you looking for in a man? My focus is always on the work I do as a drag queen, and that's where I want to keep it. Who do you want to win and why? I'm not rooting for any of the queens. It's not that I don't like them; I'm just not rooting for one or the other. I'll leave that to the judges. With more than half a million followers on Instagram, you're quite the influencer. How do you feel about that? Every time I gain a follower, I gain an opportunity to push my mission, which is to make the world a better place through drag. It's a huge responsibility that I take seriously! What's ahead for Miz Cracker? In addition to my stand-up comedy tour, “It's Time,” I'll be working with organizations like Pride Uganda to help queens improve their drag skills as a way of improving their lives.

Follow Miz Cracker at Instagram.com/Miz_Cracker.

We will, of course, take a seat on this until we actually see the film. But still, now we can't help being a little nervous by association for Rocketman, the Elton John biopic that finally arrives in theaters in May of 2019. Taron Egerton plays John in the 1970s when his career blew up with albums like Honky Château and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, well before John announced his bisexuality, married a woman, then divorced her and came out as gay in the early 1990s. Directed by Dexter Fletcher — who stepped in to finish Rhapsody after the firing of Bryan Singer — Rocketman is

Supergirl, the underrated, progressively-minded CW series that keeps on rolling in spite of a network change (from CBS) and a ratings slump, will see the arrival of a transgender character in its upcoming fourth season. Kara Danvers — the reporter alter ego of Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) — will welcome a person named Nia Nal to the newsroom. All current information suggests that this character will take a leading roll in Danvers' workplace and BENOIST that the character will also be a trans woman. As trans characters slowly make their way into narratives on network TV, it's beginning to feel like a mini revolution, and each new addition is great news. Of course, casting becomes a flashpoint issue for trans characters, and we're hoping that actual trans actors are the only candidates being considered. Why not let the cis male actors who want to stretch go find a different way to accomplish their goals? It's simply time. Romeo San Vicente adds a lot of homosexuality to everything he touches.

Pride

P

ride season in South Florida is inally drawing to a close, and a little bird told me (I think her name was Vanessa Williams) that they saved (one of) the best for last. Wilton Manors Stonewall Parade and Pride Festival will rock the Island City on Saturday, June 16, as more than 45,000 of us arrive to get our rainbow on. It all kicks off when the Marketplace opens at 4pm, with more than 100 booths spread along the length of Wilton Drive, including vendors of every stripe, artists, activists, service agencies, and, of course, plenty of food and drank. Meanwhile, parade contingents will have been queuing up just south of the river (and the Dairy Queen!) at Fort Lauderdale High School, preparing to step off at 5pm. The parade lasts about 90 minutes, then The Drive slips into full-on street-party mode. Who am I kidding? The Drive is in full-on street-party mode all day and evening, with

folks enjoying the Marketplace — and each other's company. The focus of much of the partying will be the four major stages set up along the parade route, EYEZ where the best, the brightest, the queerest, and the most outrageous among us will be strutting their stuff from mid-afternoon. Read on for the skinny on all the hot stage action.

street party. They're bringing in food trucks! Meanwhile, out on The Drive, the megaclub showcases two of its most popular resident DJs on its outdoor stage: DJ Sushiman gets things going at 3pm, and DJ JPS takes over from 6pm to 11. Between beats, expect plenty of performers. To help you transition from the street into the club (no cover tonight!), DJ Kidd Madonny will be stepping up to the decks on The Manor's indoor stage at 10pm, where the Miami fave will keep the crowd jumping until 4am.

with the of icial opening ceremonies at 4:15pm, featuring appearances by local leaders including Wilton Manors Mayor Gary Resnick, Vice Mayor (and mayoral candidate!) Justin Flippen, and Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

After the parade wraps up around 6:30, the stage kicks into high gear with DJs including iHeartRadio's Mobile Mike as well as special guest DJs from 93.9 MIA, not to mention dozens of local performers. Keeping them all in line will be your lovely and talented hosts: Misty Eyez, Nicole Halliwell, and Hotspots LIVE's very own Kitty Meow. Hunters Stage From 6pm, 2232 Wilton Dr You can expect a DJ and emcee, but the big draw at Hunters will be the big name: Crystal Waters. The dance-music queen got her break in 1991 with “Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless),” a worldwide phenomenon. Since then, she's been singing a whole lot more than just “la da dee, la dee da.” Girlfriend's had twelve No. 1 Billboard WATERS Dance Club Hits over the past quarter century, including last year's smash “Testify” (with HiFi Sean) and her current charttopper, “I Am House.” Also appearing: The Big Dipper, who Vice described a few years ago as “a hairy, ilthymouthed queer rapper out of Chicago who has a theater background, and way better style than you,” will be jetting in from his new base in L.A. He'll be joined by NYC-bred rapper (and dancer) Reijo Rych, who will not need to ly in because he's now local talent. This won't be Rych's irst time on The Drive. He's played Stonewall before. He even won Rumors Talent Search back in the day.

Rumors Stage 6–11pm, 2426 Wilton Dr Speaking of Rumors, the Upper Drive staple is promising its largest Stonewall stage ever. And they're gonna need it to hold all the talent because this year the popular bar and grill is springing for a 7-piece live band. Fronted by both male and female vocalists, the band will be serving up your pop favorites for the ages: Britney to Bruno Mars, Bon Jovi to Lady Gaga. Sounds like if you need a break from drag performances during Stonewall — say it isn't so! — Rumors will be your of icial lip-sync-free zone.

I STAND... WITH CARMEN ADORE

The daring diva talks about her days sneaking into clubs and her love for the national anthem (well, one version of it, anyway). By Scott Holland

Carmen Adore has had quite the rollercoaster ride through the entertainment world: from doing drag, to not doing drag, to starting the process of transitioning, to realizing that becoming a woman wasn't being true to herself. Lucky for all of us, Carmen's now back to performing and, speaking of tumultuous rides, she even travels all the way to Virginia once a month to do shows alongside her bosom buddy, Champagne Bordeaux. Locally, you can catch Carmen working stages all over Wilton Manors in drag and, if you have a sharp eye, even out of it. (She works at Georgie's Alibi — sshhhhhhhhh! — as a boy.) It was a pleasure to sit down with Carmen for this exclusive Hotspots interview. 72 | Hotspots.LGBT

PHOTO: Nicole Halliwell @ DragRetouch.com

What's the first drag show you saw? I honestly can't remember the first one, but it would have been in a popular Latin club in Miami when I was about 16 years old. Tell me about the experience. I had a friend whose mother was dating one of the doormen, so we got to sneak in. I'll never forget that experience. I was sneaking out of the house late at night — I'm not even sure my mom knows, but she will now! I don't remember who was performing, but I was just thrilled to be around a crowd of people just like me. When did you decide you wanted to do drag? When I first moved to Wilton Manors, around 2006, I had a group of friends, and we all lived in the same house like a fraternity. I was only 19, so they would have to get me in drag when we went out to the bars so I wouldn't get ID'd by security. When did you realize it would be a profession for you? After a while sneaking into the bars, people just assumed I was one of the performers. I thought it would be fun to give it a shot. The first person to take a chance on me, and include me in her show, was Misty Eyez when she had her Trannie Palace show in Steel Nightclub [in Fort Lauderdale, now closed]. She had no idea I was underage. When I actually turned 21, no one believed me! Who's your drag mother? I have two: Noel Leon and Misty Eyez. Both have taught me so much: how to do my makeup, how to present myself. I'm so humbled by them. Besides Noel and Misty, who's your favorite queen? My favorite queen, on stage and off, is Champagne Bordeaux. Apart from being a legendary performer, her energy on stage just makes me smile. Off stage she's been a really close, amazing friend.

ueens we

Why We Love Carmen! She's been persistent in pursuing her dreams.

She always gives back to the community.

We love a hairy man who is beautiful in drag. She never stops growing and learning.

"After a while sneaking into the bars, people just assumed I was one of the performers." What's your favorite number to perform and why? That's a really tough question because I love to do all kinds of genres. Lately my favorite number to perform is my Fergalicious Mix. In the middle of the number, I cut into Maya Rudolph's impersonation [on Saturday Night Live] of Fergie singing the national anthem. I get to make silly faces and have the audience laugh. I spent a lot of time listening to that version of the national anthem — just so I would be able to lip-sync it without laughing myself!

Hotspots.LGBT | 73

What's the best thing that's ever happened to you in drag? This is going to sound real vain, but I'm going to say it anyways: The best thing was seeing myself on TV at the RuPaul's Drag Race Season 8 reunion. I was only going to the reunion to have fun. I dressed up without even thinking I might get any kind of attention. But being there was such an experience! And then coming back home and having the reunion shown on national television was amazing. All these people texted me to say they just saw me on TV. I felt like a miniature celebrity, and I was living for it. What differentiates you from all the other queens? I'm not scared to try new things and push my drag in different directions in order to find the best version of myself. Also, I make a lot of my looks myself: doing my own makeup, hair, and outfits. At the beginning it was not the best. But I have definitely grown, having done drag for 10 years.

"I make a lot of my looks myself: doing my own makeup, hair, and outfits. At the beginning it was not the best." What does the future hold? Who really knows? I'm just taking everything day by day, focusing on my brand, #StyledByCarlos, and creating new and unique looks for all of your favorite local drag queens. I am also creating shows at Alibi, like my newest one: Next Drag Superstar, which premieres June 20 and will continue on the third Wednesday of each month. I continue to enjoy my craft. Without it, I think life would be pretty boring. Drag for me isn't about competition or being better than the next person; it's about being a family and sharing our arts and talent with the audience.

More important, the parade isn't the culmination of St. Pete's Pride festivities. It's surrounded by events that guarantee Pridegoers are participants, not mere spectators, such as the hours-long celebration that precedes the parade and the massive Pride Street Festival that follows on Sunday. St. Pete Pride is totally worth traveling for, which is why so many do.

It seems like every one-horse town in America has its own Pride celebration these days. Which is fantastic, of course. It's a sign of how far our LGBTQ community has come. But the flood of Pride events (especially in June) can also make it a little hard for a city or town to stand out from the crowd, to make its Pride seem special. Not for St. Petersburg. St. Pete Pride is special. With more than 200,000 participants, St. Pete Pride is Florida's — and one of the country's — largest. And it's grown to that size in just 16 years. It's hard to beat a nighttime Pride parade. The evening hour is perfect for our Florida climate, but it also provides an opportunity for spectacular, dazzlingly lighted showmanship. Last year 40 floats and more than 100 contingents made their way down Bayshore Drive, including dancers, soldiers, drag queens, and drill teams such as popular favorites the ROTC (Righteously Outrageous Twirling Corps).

By Scott Holland On the heels of a highly successful multi-city tour and run on Broadway, the world's bestselling touring magic show, The Illusionists – Live From Broadway (theillusionistslive.com), will play the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale June 19 – 24 as part of its North American tour. The Illusionists – Live From Broadway is produced by Simon Painter, Tim Lawson and MagicSpace Entertainment. Conceived by Simon Painter, the show's creative team also includes executive producer Tim Lawson, director Neil Dorward and creative director Jim Millan. Full of hilarious magic tricks, death-defying stunts and acts of breathtaking wonder, The Illusionists has shattered box office records worldwide and thrilled audiences of all ages with a mind-blowing spectacular showcasing the jaw-dropping talents of five of the most incredible illusionists on earth.

86 | Hotspots.LGBT

Creative producer Simon Painter said, “We can't wait to bring this electrifying show to Fort Lauderdale for a truly entertaining experience for the whole family. The Illusionists is the most non-stop and powerful mix of outrageous and astonishing acts ever to be seen on the live stage.” The five stars, each a master in their own field, are: The Trickster, Jeff Hobson is the epitome of glamour and showmanship. Don't be fooled by his innocent appearance; Jeff has audiences laughing long after the curtain goes down. The Inventor, Kevin James is known for innovative illusions, is an inventor, comedian and collector of the strange and unusual. Kevin is one of the most prolific inventors of magic in the world and has created some of the most celebrated

illusions of the last century. The Deductionist, Colin Cloud is one of the greatest thought readers of all time. He is a psychic savant known as a real-life Sherlock Holmes. Don't play against him in a game of poker – he's never lost. The Manipulator, An Ha Lim the first place winner at Korea's Busan International Magic Competition (2006), Italy Club Convention Manipulation (2006) and World Magic Seminar in Asia (2007). An Ha Lim was also a Golden Lion Award winner at the World Magic Seminar in Las Vegas (2008). The Daredevil, Jonathan Goodwin is widely considered one of the most creative, skilled, and frankly crazy stunt performers in the world. He is an accomplished knife thrower, archer, escape artist, fakir, martial artist, free diver, and free climber. Unlike the other performers in the show, Jonathan is not a magician or illusionist but he will leave the audience breathless with his death-defying stunts. It was a pleasure to sit down with the Trickster, Jeff Hobson, for this exclusive Hotspots interview: How old were you when you saw your first Magic Trick and when did you get the bug to become a magician? I was 7 years old when I saw a magician at my school. At that moment, I knew I wanted to be a magician for the rest of my life. At that moment, I told all of my classmate that I was going to be a magician. What was your first paid gig as a magician? I was 12 years old when I got a phone call at my home. It was a man who saw me perform magic. He said he wanted to hire me for his daughter's birthday. He asked me, “What do you charge?” Since I never charged for a performance before, I told him it wasn't necessary. He replied that he would pay me nonetheless. After the show, he gave me $5. I was thrilled. Now, I make a little more than that. When did you know that Magic would be your career? That show at my school engulfed all of my energies into practicing magic. I never looked back. I never thought about anything else. I knew then that I would be a professional magician as my career. When I was 16 years old, I was making more money than my father was at his job as a skilled tradesman. That was the mental slam-dunk that this was the job of a lifetime for

me. But I really don't think of it as a job. I am truly living out my childhood dream. Thank you America. Who is your Mentor in the Magic World and why? His name was Karrell Fox. He was arguably Michigan's most famous magician. I looked up to him and copied his business techniques of keeping shows simple and to “pack small but play big”. He also had many different characters that he could play depending upon the type of show that was offered. He had a character for children's shows, one for hypnosis shows, another for mentalism magic and one for his corporate show appearances.

What is your favorite trick and why? The rarely seen Floating Lightbulb as performed by the late Harry Blackstone Jr. There was nothing more magical than that. What should the South Florida audience expect from The Illusionist Live from Broadway? I like to think about it as the ultimate, variety show of magic. There's a number of different types of magic in our show. Dramatic sensational magic, poignant beautiful magic, jaw-dropping amazing magic and funny magic. All performed by magicians from around the world. It's a show for ages 5 to 105. If you're 106, you may be out-of-luck. This will be the best magic show you've ever seen.

Tickets for The Illusionists are available at the Broward Center AutoNation Box Office, 201 SW Fifth Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL, 33312, Browardcenter.org or by calling 954.462.0222. Ticket prices start at $35.25.

I'm also happy to report that Rohrabacher's days in Congress may be numbered. "For the irst time in 15 terms, Rohrabacher, a perennial shoo-in, might inally have cause to worry about his incumbency," wrote the Register. "Rohrabacher's 48th Congressional District swung narrowly to Hillary Clinton in 2016,

causing Democrats to target the newlycompetitive seat as one of 23 they need to retake control of the House of Representatives." If you're in Orange County, support Rohrabacher's opponent this fall. [At press time, the morning after California's June 5 primary, Democrats Harley Rouda and Hans Keirstead, were still duking it out to become Rohrabacher's challenger.] If you live elsewhere in the country, no doubt you have your own Rohrabacher to battle. Put on your volunteer armor and get to work.

HOT BODIES

The Calorie Killers

5 Easy, Everyday Strategies for Cutting (and Burning) More Calories by Tom Bonanti

W

hen guys want to burn off calories, they sometimes resort to drastic measures. Spending long hours in the gym grinding out intense cardio or pumping more and heavier weights are a couple of frequently deployed tactics, but these can be counterproductive and unrealistic. And

106 | Hotspots.LGBT

don't even get me started on "fat-burning supplements" or crash diets! Why not begin with some easier and more practical ways to torch those unwanted calories and fat? Here are five surefire strategies you can use every day.

Drink Up. Did you know that the body often confuses thirst for hunger? This makes it dangerously easy to down a few hundred calories through mindless eating when all you need is a glass of H2O! Keep a water bottle with you all day, and stay hydrated. Also, have a glass of water or two before each meal to keep your appetite under control. But Don't Drink Your Fruit. Instead of a glass of juice at breakfast, opt for a whole orange or apple, a few melon slices, or a cup of berries. Fruit juices contain a greater concentration of

An 8-ounce glass of orange juice contains 122 calories, but you can eat a whole orange for just 69 calories.

sugar, and thus more calories, than whole fruit. For example, an 8-ounce glass of orange juice contains 122 calories, but you can eat a whole orange for just 69 calories — and benefit from downing 3–5 grams of healthy fiber.

Swap Out Ingredients. Perform some creative swapping when you prepare meals. Going vegan is commendable, but most guys still want meat in their diet. Instead of doing without entirely, try cutting back a little to save some calories and fat. When making burgers, meatloaf, or meat sauce, try replacing some of the ground beef with chopped mushrooms or veggies like carrots, zucchini, or eggplant. Those ingredients have a meaty texture, add flavor, and contain a lot fewer calories than meat — and no saturated fat. You can do the same with carbs. When you make mashed potatoes, try a mix of half potatoes and half rutabaga Cauliflower makes a yummy substitute for rice. When boiling pasta, start with fewer noodles, and then toss some chopped vegetables into the water during the last few minutes of cooking.

Trade Snacks for Mini-Meals. Making it from one meal to the next can be a struggle once you're hungry. Instead of eating quick, handy junk food, treat each snack like a mini-meal. Choose items that have a good balance of protein, unsaturated fat, and fiber-rich carbohydrates. Go for hummus with chopped

vegetables, apple slices with almond butter, or yogurt topped with a few nuts. And whatever your healthy snack of choice, keep your house (and office) well stocked!

Work It Out. It's great when you can budget time for the gym, but sometimes work makes that impossible. The solution is to do things at your job to burn more calories and stay fit. Walk to work if you can. Park farther away from your destination at work (or when running errands). Take the stairs whenever you can. Take a brisk walk or do some push-ups and crunches during your break times. Sure, your coworkers may give you shit. But is it ever bad to be known as the guy in the office who's serious about staying fit? I don't think so.

Trading Places 5 Pro Tips For Setting up a Relaxing and Super Low-Cost Home-Swap Getaway

O

ne of the best ways to have a memorable vacation — and save a ton of cash on lodging — is a home swap. I've written several articles about how I've turned my homes into profit-producing tourist rentals, but I've never divulged my secrets to swapping homes with fellow travelers. The first time I swapped accommodations was Independence Day weekend a few years ago. A lady contacted me through my rental listing on Airbnb with a proposal: She and her family would take my place, and in exchange we could choose a holiday stay at one of her timeshares across the country. Lady had a lot of timeshares. Because I didn't want to travel far from home (driving to a nearby destination saved me the cash I would have spent on flights to a more exotic locale), I chose a deluxe suite at a Wyndham property in Atlantic City. The extra dough in my pocket meant more money to gamble, and since the swap was equitable in terms of space (two bedrooms), I was able to invite a couple friends to enjoy the free weekend with me. Of course, opening your home — and leaving strangers unattended — can be worrisome. Will they set the place on fire, steal your stuff, stumble upon your sex toys? All of it could happen. So, in order to reduce your risk and squelch those fears, consider these handy tips meant to ensure a smooth swap.

3. Prepare detailed rules and instructions.

I have three basic rules when guests stay in my home while I'm not there: 1) Don't get locked up, 2) Don't get locked out, and 3) Don't burn the place down. There are rules, expectations, and certain instructions that I need to convey to my guests to prevent any mishaps. Before I depart, I leave notes on how to work appliances, where to find essentials, and what to do with recyclables, etc. This is probably the most important aspect of a smooth swap. To create the list, go room to room and think about what others might need to know about whatever's in it. Write it down, and be descriptive; a comprehensive list will result in fewer calls asking where the iron is or how to work the dishwasher. Also, feel free to mention that you prefer the lights to be turned out in unoccupied rooms, the air conditioner shut off when it's not necessary, and any other energy- and/or money-saving techniques that you practice in your daily life.

If guests break an item, I generally overlook it; things happen, and nine times out of ten, the guest will offer to pay for it. 4. Respect the property.

4

This step will be easier to accomplish if the guest has left a detailed list of rules and instructions — the concept of “respecting” one's place differs dramatically — but hopefully common sense will prevail. It's never OK to throw a party; invade someone else's privacy; or otherwise do anything to, with, or in the owner's property for which you haven't received express permission. If you think you're doing something wrong, you probably are. Bottom line: Do unto others as you want them to do unto you. If you don't, prepare to be sued.
