Disney on Ice: Mickey s Search Party

Exclusive Interview with Tommy Do

By Scott Holland

Disney On Ice: Mickey's Search Party is coming to the BB&T Center and American Airlines Arena from September 13 to 16 and September 27 to 30 respectively. his is no longer the Disney On Ice of decades past, but a new kind of a show that combines world-class skating, high- lying acrobatics and unexpected stunts. participatory adventure. Guests will embark on a search for clues to ind Tinker Bell after Captain Hook tries to capture her magic. As each scene unfolds, compelling storytelling will be delivered through multi-level production numbers by skaters, performers and acrobats alike. “Our goal with any show, no matter where you are in the world, is to deliver transformative performances that captivate audiences time and time again. With this production of Disney On Ice, we have brought the magic closer to guests than ever before by having the audience become an integral part of advancing the narrative as each story unfolds,” said Nicole Feld, Executive Vice President and Producer. “We have pushed the action past the ice, expanding the stage beyond our traditional surface. The excitement will not only happen in front of fans, but all around them with characters emerging from the stands in unexpected places for one-on-one delightful moments.” It was a pleasure to sit down with one of the principal skaters, Tommy Do, who is part

of the LGBT community, for this exclusive Hotspots interview:

Tommy Do What age did you start skating? At the age of 5. I started playing hockey when I was younger. However, I enjoyed the artistic side more so I left Hockey and went to igure skating. What was your irst paid skating gig? I joined Disney on ice right after high school, and that was my irst time professionally skating. The show was called High School Musical: the Ice tour. How and when did you get hired from Feld Entertainment? There was a show in Boston (where I am from) and I auditioned. A few weeks later I received a phone call that I was hired. What was your favorite show to perform in other than this one? High School Musical: the Ice tour, because it was my irst show and very memorable. Also, because I went from graduating real high school to skating in this show. Do you enjoy being on tour even after all

these years? Yes, I took a break for 2 years to go to school in New York, and after living a normal lifestyle I realized I missed performing and re-joined the company. What do you do for fun? I like to write comedy, and I write tele-plays and comedy television shows. When my performing days are done, I hope to pursue that career. Do you explore the cities with you cast members? I love exploring the cities as we get to go to really cool places. I have been to Japan, South Africa and many other beautiful countries. Yes, we go exploring together. Also, the local promoters help us immerse ourselves in these cities. Are you single or married? I have a long term boyfriend, and we actually tours together. We met on the road, as our shows crossed paths and then we ended up ton the same show and started dating. Is this just a kids show or will adults enjoy it? I can quite honestly say adults will enjoy it as it's a new venture as we have incorporated acrobats throughout the show. What should the South Florida audiences expect from Disney on Ice Mickey's Search Party? There is really something for everybody in this show. For example, the carousal comes to life in an aerial carousel act. We have also incorporated new technology‌including imagery that is projected on the screen and the ice. The show is much more interactive to make the audience feel like they are participating in the outcome of the show. Tickets for Disney On Ice: Mickey's Search Party start at $16 and can be purchased at DisneyOnice.com (more info there as well).

Toni Erdmann loses Nicholson, gains Cholodenko

34

Update time: that American version of Toni Erdmann is still happening, but everything has changed. We loved the critically acclaimed German comedy from filmmaker Maren Ade. It's about an unhappy, middle-aged woman stuck in a joyless, dead end corporate job, and her elderly weirdo of a father who keeps trying to jolt her out of her miserable rut by forcing her to participate in a series of pranks played on the world around them. The Englishlanguage version went into development almost immediately, with Lena Dunham attached to direct, and Kristen Wiig and Jack Nicholson to star. At this point, however, Wiig is still in, Nicholson has dropped out, as has Dunham, and Lisa Silent Life explores Hollywood's Cholodenko (The Kids Are All bisexual golden age Right) is now slated to direct. We think Cholodenko is a wise Twin Peaks' Audrey Horne, cinema's first male sex symbol choice here; the story requires a actress Sherilyn Fenn, has a in a story that toggles from strong female perspective. By Scott Holland As, I have mentioned

one of the best parts of doing the annual Spa Edition (this is year #8) is the relationships I, and my staff have formed with the local spa owners. This year my schedule at the magazine has gotten busier, so I enlisted the help of a few of my co-workers and even the owner to attend the spa’s. Thanks to Peter, Brian, Antony, Jim and Silvio. What I have definitely learned from the spa owners and their staff is if you take care of your body on a regular basis it will take care of you and make you look and feel younger for many years!

You can really drift into a state of euphoria at this Oceanside sanctuary. The Spa Atlantic services use nourishing elements derived from the sea, including concentrated marine products, which allow them to focus on improving skin quality and optimizing overall well-being. They offer rejuvenating European-inspired thermal areas for both men and women - including a sauna, steam room and hydrotherapy tub – to cleanse before and after your service(s). The spa is located on the 5th floor of the beautiful Atlantic hotel. I was greeted by the spa GM, Robyn, who was so nice and explained the procedures I was going to receive. She then walked me to the men's Locker room, where I changed into a lush robe. Mariella met me and took me to the room where my 2 services were going to be performed. She started with the Detox

Clay Wrap 50 min ($140). This full body wrap features a bentonite clay based body mask for deep tissue cleansing. After the application of the clay mask, the body is gently wrapped in warm sheets. As my body absorbed the healing benefits of the mask, Mariella pampered me with a pressure point scalp massage. The service concluded with the application of their nourishing skin enhancer, leaving the skin deeply hydrated. This service is performed using the Jindilli brand of products, which is made with pure macadamia nut oil. The Detox Clay wrap was followed by a relaxing 25minute reflexology foot treatment ($50) to enhance circulation. The treatment alleviates stress and aides in healthy kidney, liver and bladder functions. Mariella reached all the pressure points and by the end of this service my feet felt fabulous. The rest of the day I felt like I was walking on air.

Paula's magical hands, but this year I wasn't as generous, and kept Paula all to myself. However I did let a co-worker, Anthony, experience JD's massage. Anthony received a Deep Tissue Massage 50 min ($125) - which focuses on specific problem areas to relieve tension, spasms and overall tightness. Pressure is medium to deep, although Anthony requested Deep and he said JD had the perfect touch. . According to Anthony, JD welcomed him and offered cucumber lemon water and walked him back in to one of the treatment rooms. He said that relaxing spa music and aromatic oils filled the room, and Anthony was well on his way to being relaxed. JD first asked Anthony if he had any problem areas, and began his full body massage. Anthony said a hot towel placed under his neck was very soothing. The massage included toes, temples and butt cheeks. He also stretched Anthony's arms and neck. He was completely relaxed once the massage was completed.

It was now my time with Paula's, and experience her wonderful Deep Cleansing Facial - 80 min, ($145). The facial started with a double cleanse which was followed by a microdermabrasion treatment which is a mechanical deep exfoliation with a diamond tip wand. Afterwards Paula massaged my face with her magical fingers using stress relief oil. This is followed by an oatmeal mask, and then a contour mask is applied on top of the oatmeal mask. This is to tighten and calm the skin down. While the masks are setting Paula does a hot stone massage to the arms and neck. Once the masks are removed, she applies moisturizer and sunscreen. I sent Silvio to this Spa, and as soon as walks in he is greeted by receptionist who says “Hello you must be Silvio." She then began to review his services. He was booked for a Deep Pore Cleansing Facial $159 for 60 minutes, Sports Massage $90 for 60 minutes and a Combo Mani Pedi for $40.

Holly then offered Silvio a beverage and then introduces him to the skin care specialist Amalfi who is a licensed esthetician. She's been with Omm Spa for 7 years and gently escorts me back to the facial and skin care center. Her first step is to get Silvio to relax, and she does this by explaining that every face is like a fingerprint, unique and no two are alike. She identifies that his forehead is drier than the rest of his face and will require different serums and treatment to bring it back to its natural state. The facial begins with a simple cleansing followed by a deep cleansing of his pores getting them to open up so the dirt and debris and dead skin can be removed. She's stripped away the dead skin with a microdermabrasion tool that seems as powerful as a drill. Afterwards she replenishes his skin with extracts and vital nutrients which range from collagen, to pumpkin and other natural derivatives. This was Silvio's first ever professional facial so he was impressed by the 42

| Hotspots.LGBT

step by step process and science behind the skin rejuvenation. After the unveiling I feel like a new man with skin and a face a fresh as a new born baby's bottom. I am sold 100% and can't wait to book my next facial with Amalfi. I can not thank her enough. Directly next door to the Facial Room is the Massage Room, where he was introduced to masseuse Caroline. She immediately asks about his previous experience with massage techniques and what preferences he has. She said she will knead and work his muscle tissue to the point to where it will release the tension and break up scar tissue as well. Silvio lies on the massage table face up as she begins the massage, and she begins stretching his frontal muscles carefully. Each individual limb is passively kneaded and its feeling very organic and his entire body feels connected to the universe. As she applies light oils Silvio is acutely aware of how in touch he is with his breathing. She then repeats the process on his back, legs and feet. Their session ends with Silvio in a state of unconditional relaxation.

He is then introduced to Gina for a Mani Pedi Combo. First off she has Silvio recline in a super sleek state of the art massage chair that adjusts to various stages, while dipping my feet into the wash basin below. She goes on to apply softening agents that aid in the process, then files the toenails and the gives Silvio instructions on the proper angles should he attempt to do this at home. Once filed to the degree that she is satisfied his foot goes back into the bath and another lotion is applied to keep the skin and nails pliable and easy to work with. Moving to the manicure table she gently applies a lotion to begin the soaking process. She always shows him the angles and intensity necessary to do the best without causing unwanted damage to the fingernails. She explains that cutting too close cause's pain for days. Once the filing is completed she goes back to apply a clear coat to my toenails that is barely visible and only meant as a protective coat. Urban Retreat Spa 4450 NE 20th Avenue, Fort Lauderdale 954.249.9176•Facialsfortlauderdale.com

Frank Velaz, who is the owner of Urban Retreat Spa, and I have known each other for many years. He opened Urban Retreat and Spa in 2006 and the business has steadily grown. His therapists each have at least 10 years' experience in the industry. Urban Retreat offers a Free Skin Analysis to properly design a custom plan of professional

treatments and home skin regimens, with reality based prices.

This year, I sent Brian, our Business manager, to Urban and Frank determined his skin was inflamed, highly sensitive and slightly reactive. It was also dehydrated to the point it was over producing oils/sebum to try and compensate. Therefore, the facial Frank decided to give Brian was a hybrid of their two most popular facial treatments (the Image O2 Lift and the Skin Sense Hydrating Facial – 60 min $85). He gently used an enzyme-rich gel that removed a layer of dead skin, followed by an effervescent masque on most of his face and an anti-redness/calming cream masque on the areas where Brian struggled with inflammation and sensitivity. After Frank applied: the Skin Sense pH Balancing spray Toner, Skin Sense Pure Hyaluronic Serum, Skin Sense Vitamin C & E Booster Serum. Then he used Image Skincare Ormedic Lip Complex which instantly adds moisture and fullness, an Image Ormedic Eye Cream that went on the lids also. Finished with the Image Prevention+ Moisturizer Tinted SPF 30. In the end Brian looked super hydrated and glowing.

lobby and took the elevator up to the 6th floor. I was greeted by the Spa's new GM Marianna Magapan, who was so sweet and delightful it made my morning. The Spa desk is also in the Gym, which is complimentary for hotel guests and anyone using the spa. I was then walked back into the treatment area and introduced to my masseuse, Leon. Leon, who was very soft spoken has been with the Spa since virtually the day they opened over 10 years ago. He walked me to the men's locker room, showed me the lockers, steam room, showers, etc and told me to come out when I was ready.

After a small consultation, Leon decided to change the massage I was originally scheduled for and give me a custom massage (50 min $155) that combined Deep Tissue and Hot Stone Therapy. He was immediately able to tell that I worked at a desk and that my problem areas are my neck/shoulders and lower back. In addition to his talented hands, Leon used a combination of Hot towels and Hot stones that I had never experienced before (I have been doing the Spa reviews for 8 years, so for me to say I have never 44

experienced something is a big deal!). Needless to say, this was one of the best massages I had ever had and trust I will be back to Spa Q!

Spa Cabanas Guesthouse and Spa 2133 NE 26th Street • Fort Lauderdale 954-565-2307

Norman Lachance, owner of Spa Cabanas, is feeling better than ever before. Having reached the milestone of 10 years in business, Spa Cabanas is now considered to be among the best men's day spas in south Florida. With his experience owning spas in Canada and Germany, Norman has created a culture of excellence in spa treatments and customer service. Norman made the choice to go to

Pavonia and Decleor from Paris for skincare, and he also pursued studies (earning a certification) from Dr. Babor of Germany. After 10 years he still insists that the spa's success is due to his loyal local residents, his talented team and the ever growing community of travelers. Once again, Norman had decided he wanted us to experience multiple services, and I brought the owner of Hotspots Media, Peter Clark, along with me to get pampered. Peter was with Mario Martinez, a licensed massage therapist, who performed the extraordinary Bamboo Massage (90 minutes $145) for this year's bodywork treatment. This fresh and natural approach combines Swedish and Deep Tissue massage strokes with beautifully crafted sets of warmed aroma oil-soaked Bamboo tools to roll, slide, knead and tap you

into a deep state of relaxation. This Bamboo Massage is done with hollow organically treated Bamboo Canes of different lengths and diameters, which is warmed or used at room temperature. This is used to roll and knead the tissue to create an extreme sensation of relaxation and well-being. Peter said Mario was clearly an expert at the Bamboo Massage and that he felt so relaxed all day long! Before I was re-introduced to my Aesthetician Brett, I was talking to my new friend Christian Perez, who was recently promoted to the Spa Manager. Christian is a licensed massage therapist, who relocated to south Florida and began working at Spa Cabanas while volunteering for the American Massage Therapy Association in the fall of 2017. Christian is a graduate of both Goldey Beacom College (bachelor degree) and the Academy of Massage and Bodywork in Wilmington, DE. Although he is best known for his unique approach to deep tissue massage, he is very excited about his new job as the spa manager and is thankful to have inherited a talented team of aestheticians and massage therapists. His vision for Spa Cabanas is to continue to be the best men's day spa in south Florida by providing the highest level of customer service, by upholding the highest standard of professionalism and by evolving as individuals and as a company. In Christian's opinion, Spa Cabanas will become a one-stop shop for state of the art treatments that enhance the health and wellbeing of men across the world. Shortly afterwards, Brett McAnlly, esthetician, arrived and walked me into the treatment room. Brett received his license from the Hollywood Institute of Beauty. The facial treatment he provided is the newest innovation at Spa Cabanas called the 3 Layer Facial (60 min $159). We began with a deep cleanse and exfoliation including extractions, which are the basis of any good facial. He then performed the painless micro-needling treatment, pumping serums directly into areas of primary focus such as scars, wrinkles and even the delicate skin around the eyelids. Lastly, after the skin was treated, he finished by applying an oatmeal

hydrating mask while massaging the face. There is virtually no down time! Brett then performed their popular Back Facial Treatment (60 minutes $85). The back facial is performed by cleansing and exfoliating using microdermabrasion.

Afterwards, he examined the back and communicates any irregularities on the skin (I was so happy to hear I have good skin on my back). The treatment is great for people who spend a lot of time in the sun, have dry skin or suffer from excess blackheads. The back facial ended with a complete mask that calms, hydrates and moisturizes the skin. The Spa Cabanas always features specials; check their ad right here in Hotspots to find out what they are. For the month of September, they have many specials as they are continuing the celebration of their 10th anniversary (from August) due to popular demand! The specials are: Three 90 minute massages $245 (reg: $375); All waxing 20% off; Babor Facial only $89 (reg: $129); Exfoliation $64 (reg: $85); Five 60 min massages $259 (reg: $457); A facial and a massage $149 (reg: $229); Three Mani-Pedi packages $135 (reg: $195). Take advantage of buying any or all of these specials until the end of September.

EVANGELICAL WHITE HOUSE DINNER GUESTS

F

ood poisoning sucks, y'all. I just vomited with such force that I'm fairly certain some major internal organs have left my body along with my soul. And, to top it off, I just got a spam text from some “horny single woman” telling me she's all alone tonight and wants to suck my youknow-what. Mind you, I'm sitting here dehydrated, saltine crumbs all over my shirt, but hey, nice to know I've still got it. If I had the strength I'd get up off the couch to show these texts to my wife. Alas, she'll have to read about my new girlfriend in this column along with the rest of you. So what to do on a night like tonight? Well, I'm following Jeremy Hooper on Twitter (@goodasyou) as he essentially live tweets the awful evangelical jamboree happening at the White House right now. While I was clutching the toilet bowl and praying for Jesus to take me, Trump and his family, including LGBTQ “allies” Ivanka and Jared, were rubbing elbows with some of the most hateful anti-LGBTQ figures alive. This is, of course, not a surprise. Trump needs these folks in his corner. A Republican really can't win without the evangelical vote these days. It's also not a surprise that these so-called Christians are falling all over themselves to worship Trump as their God. Mind you, it seems like a contradiction for

OF THE WEEK BY D'ANNE WITKOWSKI

folks who claim to be culture war warriors to fawn over a man who literally embodies the opposite of all the things they claim to hold dear. But if you've been studying this crowd as long as I have, well, it's fitting. As Hooper puts it, “If you're surprised that political evangelicals would show up to this White House despite the many reasons to not, you haven't been paying attention for four decades. Rank hypocrisy in service of their desired outcome is, was, and always will be their m.o.” True story. I'd like to point out the often trotted out complaint about Democrats, that they need to stand for something, not just against Trump. Never mind that this complaint completely ignores the fact that Dems actually have a whole slew of actual policy proposals rooted in the principal that we should give a shit about fellow human beings. This complaint does, however, fit radical evangelicals perfectly and helps explain their love of Trump. As Hooper points out, we've watched for the past 40 years as evangelicals work against LGBTQ people, women, people of color (shout-out to Jeff Sessions). They have used their power and influence to diminish all who dared demand equality.

HOT BODIES by Tom Bonanti

How to

AVOID BURNOUT

by Making Your Workouts

K

eeping fit is a lifetime commitment filled with hard work and sacrifice. Sure, the results are worth it, but sometimes they come at quite a price. Whether you're a professional athlete, or just an average guy trying to get into decent shape, there comes a time when you feel a little frustrated, burned out and, yes, even a little bored. Here's a few tips to keep the mojo in those workouts!

SIZZLE

Make working out your special time to get in touch with how your body works. Pressures and hassles abound at work and even at home. When

you're at the gym that's your time to focus on you. Shut out all mental distractions. Limit conversation. If you're working out with a partner or trainer, make sure that accomplishing your routine comes before chit chat. Lock your cell phone away somewhere. Tune in to some high energy music. Stay focused on using correct form and feel the before the holidays. Maybe you want to add 3 to 5lbs of muscle to your frame by springtime. Whatever it is, give yourself something to look forward to! Insanity has been defined as doing the same things, the same way, all the time and expecting different results. The same can be said about your workouts. Think of ways to vary routines without losing the progress you've made. Check out the strides you can make with interval training or circuit training. These are two slightly different ways of training that will help build lean muscle and lose fat at the same time. Change from the same old machines you use at the gym to more free weights. Switch the days you work out and the time of day you hit the gym. Just remember, change can be a very good and exciting thing. burn with each muscle contraction. Keep in constant touch with your body, how you feel, what you are thinking as your body goes through the marvelous changes that accompany working out. Everyone needs short- term and long- term goals to work toward while in the gym, otherwise you're left spinning your wheels. Defining these goals and coming up with an effective way to reach them is called periodization. This is the most effective method of training. Break up the year into shorter 2 or 3- month intervals with their own goals. A short- term goal might be losing 5lbs

Book your workouts into your schedule. Your workouts are as essential and vital to your well -being as networking, power lunches and conference calls. Furthermore, any boyfriend, boss or co-worker that doesn't understand your commitment to working out needs a reality check. A fit spouse makes a better lover and happier companion. A healthy employee is less likely to cost the company money by taking off sick days.

Yourd BEST MEAL! 6 Reasons Eating Alone at a Restaurant is the Best Meal You’ll Ever Have!

Being alone and being lonely are two different things. While I don't prefer the latter, I embrace the former. I do a lot of things by myself, in fact. Go to the movies, sit on the beach, pop into a happy hour, enjoy bikes rides, even go on vacation. I also like to treat myself to lunches and dinners out where I can sit in solitude and think, work, or catch up on odds and ends on my to-do list. For those reasons and six more, here's why eating alone at a restaurant is the best meal you'll ever have.

You can order what you want without any guilt When I'm trying to stick to a strict diet, I like to have a food buddy who will support my endeavors when I go out to eat. But, sometimes, I just want to dive face first into a massive pasta dish with a bottle of wine, a basket of bread, and finish with dessert. And do you know what I don't need while I'm doing that? Judgment. I judge myself hard enough, ya know, and I don't need some hoity-toity fit so-and-so chastising me for licking the bowl in public. So what if I make vaguely oinky noises while I do it. Does that embarrass you? Good; table for one, please.

1

2

'Me' time is absolutely necessary I eat alone at restaurants spur of the moment, but most of the time it's a conscious, advance decision, and I plan for it. I like to gather up all my unread magazines and take them with me. I sit at the bar for hours, eating, drinking, and thumbing through the pages of the pile, and it's truly my happy place. Totally relaxing; try it sometime.

You don't have to engage in idle chit-chat I don't know if you have this thing, but I sort of put my friends into certain categories. Like, I have specific friends with whom I enjoy going to the movies or inviting over for game nights or going away for the weekend with. I rarely, however, invite anyone to eat out with me or accept invitations for a meal out, especially if I'm without my boyfriend. The reason? I don't want to feel trapped in a situation where I feel like I “have” to talk. I find small talk annoying, and to have to keep it up for an hour or more gives me anxiety. If you want to catch up, just text me. I'll be at one restaurant eating alone and you'll be at another and we can establish a lovely back-andforth banter without having to ever look at each other's faces, which is exactly how I like it.

3

“I'm the higher earner in my relationship, so I often pick up the tab for meals out...”

You don't have to worry about picking up someone else's tab I'm the higher earner in my relationship, so I often pick up the tab for meals out – which I don't mind doing most of the time, but sometimes it gets old, if I'm honest (though he does pay half when he can and takes me out from time to time). I do the same for friends and family out of guilt or kindness or reparation, like if somebody put me up in their house for a night or two while traveling. Whatever the reason, it's nice to go out by myself and know exactly how much I'll be spending. Even more so when I'm taking advantage of a deal, like Chili's recent “3 for $10” promotion. This is not a paid endorsement but an endorsement nonetheless because where else can you get a drink, salad, and substantial meal for a Hamilton? If you're reading this, Chili's, I will be your spokesperson.

You'll get faster service at the bar When I'm eating out with four or more, it's usually best to get a table, but I prefer to sit at the bar on most other occasions. My boyfriend and I strictly sit at the bar whenever we dine out, except for special romantic occasions (we like to get mushy on anniversaries and holidays – sex is better afterward ☺). I opt for the bar because I know I'll get prompt service because I can stare the bartenders down until they submit to my if-you-don't-pay-attentionto-me-I'm-not-tipping gaze. That's not true, of course – I'm a generous tipper, I think – but they don't need to know that when my mouth is parched for another margie.

5

“When I'm eating out with four or more, it's usually best to get a table, but I prefer to sit at the bar on most other occasions.”

Nobody will eat off your plate If you've ever seen that “Friends” episode where “Joey doesn't share food” – that's me. When my ex-husband and I would go out to dinner, he'd order something small like an appetizer and a salad because he was watching his weight or he didn't want to feel like he was overeating, but then he'd grab from my fries until I barely had any left. All the time. Eventually I started encouraging him to order a more substantial meal because I didn't want him taking my food. I'm not antisharing, but I am pro cleaning my plate. I want to eat what I ordered, thank you, and I'd love it if you ordered your own junk so we can get fat together. Isn't that what love is all about?
