Diane Keaton Is Sorry (Not Sorry)

Hollywood icon talks gay following she never knew she had, lesbian roles ('I'm available') and The First Wives Club

D

iane Keaton doesn't have all the answers to all the questions and she's sorry about that. She's sorry a lot. So sorry I kindly urge her not to be, like she's not Diane Keaton but a familiar friend, her izzy, giddy, no-pretense charm making it easy to be honest with her. In conversation, Keaton reads less Oscar winner, more fun, drunk aunt who loves a kiki, her on-brand self-deprecation and bewilderment amusingly intact. For all her Hollywood clout, Keaton is not exactly keen on her own Keatonness, despite a rich awards-

speckled history of acclaimed roles (The Godfather), box-of ice smashes (Father of the Bride, Something's Gotta Give) and The First Wives Club, her sassy-sisters-unite comedy. We are talking Annie Hall herself. But Keaton is especially loored to hear the LGBTQ community still pays any mind at all to The First Wives Club. Yes, it came out in 1996; no, Diane Keaton didn't know you can't put a date on a timeless gay cult classic. The 73-year-old actress' androgynous style – suits and top hats – may make her appear lesbian-bar-ready,

Things That Make You Go

Hmmm…

By Troy Maillis

OOPS…Will Britney Spears Do It Again!? Every Britney Spears fan remembers her epic 2007 meltdown—shaved head, wielding an umbrella at the paparazzi, jumping into the Pacific Ocean, partying panty-less with Paris Hilton. It’s the stuff of pop-culture legend. After getting her life back in control with the help of a conservatorship placing her father, Jamie Spears, in control of crucial decisions regarding her personal and professional life, the pop-princess is now back in the news with many entertainment and news outlets saying Britney is once again off the rails. Britney is denying these allegations and has told her social media following on multiple occasions she is just fine. Is Britney really okay, or is this the beginning of another epic meltdown?

Reasons Why Older Men Make the Best Boyfriends

The web site GayGuys.com lists 8 reasons why daddies make the best boyfriends for younger gay men: “He’s gone through a battle of the twenties, lessons of the thirties, and peace and tranquility of the forties. He knows what lies behind the bush because he’s been there, done it. He knows his boundaries and actually pays attention to them rather than ignoring it because he knows the dangers of doing so. This kind of attitude will flourish any relationship while inspiring you to find your own self. He is wise, mature and a better lover.”

Unbelievable But True

HAS HARRIET TUBMAN BEEN RAILROADED? The unveiling of a redesigned $20 bill featuring Harriet Tubman had been timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment, which granted women the right to vote. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin recently said that the design process has been delayed, and no new imagery will be unveiled until 2028! Is there an underlying reason why the powers that be are so reluctant to replace Andrew Jackson with Harriet Tubman? What a slap in the face!

The George Daniell Museum will open inside the Wilzig Museum Building in South Beach, a multi-museum complex that hopes to welcome other international museums in the coming years. Currently the World Erotic Art Museum is also present in the building, which features a permanent exhibit dedicated to the life of sex searcher Alfred Kinsey.

Teddy Behr: Mmmmmm...he was born in 1911 so his life as a fashion and free-lance photographer for magazines like “Time” and “Life” and as an artist is typical of the way a lot of creatives and Gays participated in culture in the early 20th century. What stands out about Daniell is that he was open about being Gay when most people were only 'out' to close friends or people in the art and fashion worlds, where it was more or less accepted.

Adora: It's really cool to enter his world: he photographed stars like Sophia Loren & Audrey Hepburn, but also serious artists like Georgia O'keefe.

genre latino / Culturizate, Culturizame And his paintings of guys on the beach at Fire Island in the 1950's and 60's are like a window into hay history.

Teddy Behr: There are photos of sailors and boys on scooters in Italy after World War 2. Some are kind of erotic, and deeply sensual. That was all before there was a p*rn industry, and male eroticism was probably pretty threatening to the general public. But his photos of stars like Sophia Loren and Audrey Hepburn really go beyond the glam/fashion content we're all used to: His portraits show their fierce aspect: Loren is on fire!; and Hepburn's portrait reveals her incredible empathy. It foretells the way she abandoned her glam icon status to use her celebrity as a spokesperson for the rights and protection of children later on.

Adora: It's true; and the portrait of artist Georgia O'keefe really framed the way we think of her: The fierce pioneering oracle of feminist art. Daniell's portraits are subtly feminist because they represented these women as achievers, instead of sexualizing them. Being Gay, he presented a new somewhat erotic male image. So he kind of turned the whole thing around in ways we take for granted now, but which weren't really typical at all back then.

Teddy Behr: At all. It was also cool to see the exhibit of the Kinsey Report and Kinsey Institute of Human Sexuality. Kinsey started massive research into sexual behavior among humans in the 1950's that showed (among other things), that there was a lot more Homosexuality going on than people recognized, and it upset a lot of people. The whole thing is kind of a window into the 1950's when we had the Beatniks coming up too. Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and William Burroughs were all Gay and they pioneered what happened in the '60's - from the Hippies to Stone Wall Riot, and Radical Feminism grew from the same refusal to accept old norms and just bust out of them. In a less obvious way, George Daniell was a participant and a messenger of the changes we've all benefitted from, both in his mainstream photography and his more personal artistic work.

The Art of Health: A Unique Approach to Healthcare in South Florida For a lot of people, going to the doctor usually happens only when something is “wrong” and typically involves a long wait just to be hurried through a quick appointment. It’s common for people to leave the doctor’s office with a prescription (or referral to another doctor) and a chip on their shoulder. At Osteopathic Medical Arts Center (OMAC) of South Florida, however, the healing process begins the moment you walk through the doors. A state-of-the-art facility and a welcoming staff elicit a sense of comfort and calm so that patients can feel relaxed when they are with their treating doctor. “Everything is connected to health,” says Dr. Gardere, founder of OMAC and doctor of osteopathic medicine (D.O.). He knows that a relaxed nervous system is fundamental to restoring health and bringing the body, mind and spirit back into balance. Dr. Gardere founded OMAC with the view that a person’s health and well-being is greater than the sum of their parts. Unlike most medical doctors (M.D.), practitioners at OMAC spend a significant amount of time in the initial consultation with a patient, to get to know them and their physical, mental and emotional health. “It’s like how a painter would never look

only at a single tree to paint an entire landscape,” says Dr. Gardere. “You need to study the whole picture to be able to see how all elements flow in harmony with one another.” Osteopathic medicine was founded in the late 19th century by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, an American physician who believed sincerely in the body’s innate ability to heal itself. Rather than focusing only on addressing individual symptoms or ailments in isolation, the practice of Osteopathic Medicine seeks to optimize how the whole system of the body functions—from muscles and bones to the organs and systems. With the distinction of being a neuromusculoskeletal specialist, Dr. Gardere’s expertise lies in manually restoring function in the body by applying gentle manipulations with his hands. Rather than focusing only on the affected parts of the body, neuromuscular manipulations are intended to restore whole body wellness and balance. Practitioners at OMAC are not just focused on achieving health where it was once lost, but on keeping people healthy in the long term. Many patients who come to Dr. Gardere find themselves in severe chronic pain. They have seen doctors, chiropractors,

“By restoring function, you restore life.” Dr. Serge Gardere

orthopedic surgeons, and even neurosurgeons, in the hopes of finding relief. More often than not, they are prescribed painkillers and sent home. At OMAC, patients that suffer from these conditions will find practioners who study and treat the body to restore function and reduce pain. For Dr. Gardere and the leaders in the field who came before him, osteopathic medicine is about much more than just fixing a problem. It’s about restoring total health and wellness, and that starts by seeing the whole person and how they move through life. “By restoring function, you restore life,” he says.

The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood Summer exhibition

Personify Set to Open June 7 This summer, the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood (1650 Harrison St.) will delve into figurative works with the whimsical group show Personify. This family-friendly exhibition will feature sculptures, puppets and installations by renowned South Florida artists Pablo Cano and Jim Hammond, plus distinctive installations by Jeanne Jaffe, Gili Avissar and others. When inanimate objects reflect cultural concerns, historical narratives, and playful humor, it becomes clear that artists project their impressions of history into figurative works to better understand contemporary society. The sculptures, puppets, and installations in Personify engage new audiences and ask for participation. Marionettes will be on view and engaged with in Pablo Cano's work, and in an installation about the life and inventions of Nikola Tesla by Jeanne Jaffe that will hang delicately from the Immersive Gallery ceiling. Body textiles by Israeli artist Gili Avissar reflect his time spent in Miami this past spring at the Fountainhead

Residency. Other local artists will include figurative works that reference the idea of personification through inanimate objects. The exhibition runs from June 7 through August 18. Gallery visitors can create their own “personified” art work in their Interactive Room while being immersed in an installation by Jim Hammond.
