The Frivolist By Mikey Rox
9 Seemingly Cheaper Travel 'Hacks' That Could Be Robbing You Blind Cutting costs on travel can be a boon for your vacay budget, but there's a dark side to some of those “discounts.”
1
Flying budget airlines
Travel discounts apps and sites may populate your air travel search with lower-cost, no-frills lines like Spirit or Norwegian, but what you're saving on the front end could cost you even more on the back end. Unlike slightly higher-priced traditional airlines, “budget” carriers charge for everything, from carry-on bags (and the fee is WAY more than traditional airlines) to food and water (yes, you have to buy your own water on Spirit), so if you don't plan accordingly, you can end up spending a fortune to get there in a seat that's been consciously designed to be less comfortable. And that's assuming you get there… I booked a flight to Paris from Dublin on Ryanair many years ago and the airline canceled the flight, ruined our New Year's Eve, stranded us in the airport (we slept on the floor), only to send us to London a day later without so much as a sorry or a flight voucher.
Being flexible with your flight time and duration to save money
You can save a lot of money by choosing to fly at an inconvenient time or booking a flight with a long layover. But at what cost to your vacation? “Oftentimes, it pays to spend more on a flight if it means you'll get to your destination faster or at a better time,” says Calvin Iverson, travel expert at TravelPirates. “If you're spending 10 hours doing nothing at an airport during a layover or arriving in your destination at three in the morning, are you really having a good vacation?” Or you can do what I do – book the longest layover possible in a place you've never been. I took a 16hour layover in Iceland from London about 15 years ago – because when was I ever going to go to Iceland – and I loved it so much, I've returned twice. It was the best part of my vacation by far.

3
Clearing your cookies to game the system
One misconception is that when you're searching online for flights that you need to clear your search browser history before evaluating flights as the airlines have algorithms that will automatically increase flight prices if you continue searching for flights to the same destination. This may be counterintuitive as some airlines will reduce a flight price in the hope of securing your booking. Very often airlines will offer reduce rates to frequent flyers so browsing for flights in incognito mode could actually cost you money.
4
Pre-booking a vacation package deal before you leave
It's important to understand when booking a vacay package that you're not booking direct with the providers themselves and you will pay an inflated price to the booking agent as they need to make a margin too. “The other inherent problem with 'vacation package deals' is that you will often end up with inconvenient travel times, poor rooms, and less than ideal rental cars,” adds Patricia Russell, a certified financial planner (CFP) and founder of the personal finance blog FinanceMarvel. “You will end up overpaying for each service and then receive a subpar service from each provider. You're much better to book directly with each provider as they will generally match the rate from the 'vacation package' broker anyway.”
5
Booking a hotel outside of the city
It's true that hotels farther from the city center or the airport are often less expensive than hotels closer to the action. “But before you book one of those hotels for the low price,” says Iverson, “look into how you plan to get from the hotel to the city center. Sometimes public transportation isn't easy or inexpensive, and you end up paying more than you would have paid for a stay at a more conveniently located hotel.”

6
Saving money by booking a bus or train instead of a flight
Sometimes you can get from point A to point B much cheaper by bus or train instead of a flight. But time is worth money too – are you turning one of your hard-earned vacation days into a travel day?
7 8 9
Signing up for travel credit cards
Travel credit cards offer free points, miles and other rewards to get you to sign up. While these signup bonuses can be very generous, it's easy to forget why they are so generous. These bonuses are so enticing because, on average, the company will make more money off of interest it charges. This makes it extremely lucrative for them to give out so many bonuses. If you aren't responsible with a credit card, no matter what the signup bonuses are, you can easily end up paying much more than your signup bonuses and easily end up in debt and even damaging your credit score if you aren't careful.
Being flexible with your flight dates to save money
Most people know that one of the easiest ways to save money on your vacation is to change your departure or return date. But before you adjust your dates to save $100 off your flights, don't forget to check your hotel's rates for your updated dates – hotel rates can change dramatically from day to day, and you could actually end up saving money by choosing the more expensive flight if your hotel ends up being cheaper for those days.
Waiting for prices to drop
Waiting for the price of a flight, cruise, rental, hotel or anything related to travel can cost you more if the prices increase. “For example, if you wait and the price goes up, you can't go back and book at a cheaper price,” says personal finance expert Dustyn Ferguson, founder of the money-saving blog Dime Will Tell. “However, if you book as soon as possible and the price drops later, you can usually contact the company for a price match to their new offer.”
Things That Make You Go

What Would Gordon Ramsay Say?!
The End of an Era?
We’ve all seen bloodmobiles on our way into the movie theater and rolled our eyes as we surreptitiously walked by. On days when I was feeling a little friskier, I tried to come up with witty responses as to why I couldn’t donate blood—but those days might be coming to an end. After the HIV and AIDS crisis shook the world back in the early 80s, the FDA banned blood donations from any man who had “previously had sexual relations with other men.” That unfortunate—and borderline homophobic— policy has remained active until now; however, in 2015 the FDA narrowed its ban. The ban now only applies to men who’ve had sex with another man in the past year. As reported by The Independent, at least seven 2020 Democratic presidential campaigns have called for an end to the FDA’s guidelines. Thanks to modern disease-screening techniques, most gay-rights advocacy groups say the ban is no longer necessary. “The one-year deferral period for male blood donors who identify as gay and bisexual has nothing to do with science or medicine and everything to do with outdated stigmas against the LGBTQ community,” a spokesperson for Beto O’Rourke’s campaign told The Independent, which received similar responses from the campaigns of Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, Kirsten Gillibrand, John Delaney, and Marianne Williamson. This would be the first year the FDA ban would be a key issue of presidential candidates. It’s just one more reason to vote blue when you take to the ballot box in 2020. Source: Bigthink.com

Anyone who has ever watched Gordon Ramsay’s cooking shows (Hell’s Kitchen, Master Chef, Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares) knows the F-bomb dropping chef despises microwaves. Now we all might have a good reason. The web site NaturalCuresBook. net has published some head-scratching information about the harmful effects of microwave ovens. These include reduced resistance to viral and bacterial infections, a weakened immune system and cancer. The web site reports radiation from these ovens “deforms and destroys the food molecules, leading to the creation of harmful radioactive compounds.” Source: NaturalCuresBook.net

Care Resource Expands Building
from 22,000 to 55,000 Square Feet
Care Resource, a nonprofit organization and Federally Qualified Health Center, officially broke ground on the $33 million expansion and renovation of its Midtown Miami Health Center and Administrative Headquarters located at 3510 Biscayne Blvd. The ceremony took place on Tuesday, June 18, at 11 am and was officiated by City of Miami Mayor Francis Suarez and Commissioner Ken Russell. This expansion transforms Care Resource's existing 22,000 square foot two-story building into a 55,000 square foot, seven-story state-ofthe-art community health center, bringing all of its services under one roof. It will double the number of individuals the organization serves per annum to 21,400 within three years. According to Rick Siclari, MBA, CEO, “Our Midtown center has far surpassed its capacity to meet the needs of our patients, providers, and staff. Compounding this challenge, we expect the demand for our services to continue to grow significantly over the next five years. The future 56 | Hotspots.LGBT
we're building is one of innovation and stateof-the-art healthcare at its best. We treat each person as a whole person with a continuum of care that is unparalleled. With these expansions and renovations, Care Resource is poised to continue our history of care for the most vulnerable in our communities. This renovation adds a new pediatrics unit in addition to medical, dental, and behavioral healthcare, and an array of comprehensive preventive and social support services to address the holistic needs of children, adolescents, and adults. To accommodate the growing need for more primary and specialty care services, the new facility increases the number of medical exam rooms from 10 to 24, and the number of dental chairs from 4 to 10. The building, designed by David Scott Parker Architects, features a Walgreens pharmacy on its ground floor for direct access by Care Resource's patients. It also integrates Care Resource's Food For Life Network's Food
Pantry and Nutritional Center. Care Resource is investing cash reserves in this project, with additional funding from commercial lenders, community development financial institutions, an $800,000 federal capital development grant from HRSA (Health Resources and Services Administration), and a variety of private donations, foundations, corporations, and government entities. Care Resource also announced the establishment of its Building for the Future Capital Fund, which supports the renovation of its Midtown headquarters as well as other expansions planned for its Little Havana and Fort Lauderdale locations. The projected completion of the Midtown project is late 2020. Care Resource serves communities who otherwise confront financial, geographic, linguistic, cultural, or other barriers to accessing healthcare. As a Federally Qualified Health Center, it provides comprehensive primary medical and preventive care, including medical, dental, and behavioral health/substance abuse care in addition to social and nutritional support services to all individuals in our community. This cutting-edge model of care has proven effective at generating better outcomes for patients at costs lower than traditional private care models. Its offices are in Midtown Miami, Miami Beach, Little Havana, Oakland Park, and Fort Lauderdale.

Uncommon Native Plants that are Good for Your Yard
(and the enviroment)
By: Mark Katelli
When most people think of our Florida native plants, they think of the wild roadside mess- and, for the lack of a better word, 'not pretty' plants. However, most do not realize that La Florida was coined by Ponce De LeoĚ n for the amount of flowers that were naturally found here. This historical tidbit has been obscured by many exotic invasive plants that have escaped cultivation and overrun our natural areas- thereby providing an eyesore for many drivers. Of the approximate 4200 species of plants found in our state, about 1000 are exotic and invasive- some of which have caused great disadvantageous imbalances in our precious ecosystems. All gardeners gravitate to novelty plants. Why have the same exact plants as others? There's not much interest in that! Here is a suggested list to mix things up to satisfy everchanging tastes. Florida native plants are not just adapted for our local environment, but they require little to no fertilizer and are perfect for water conservation efforts.
Pityopsis Graminifolia
Narrow-leaf silk grass (Pityopsis graminifolia): Contrary to the common name, this is a wildflower from the aster family. The common name originates from the grass-like blades that first sprout before the plant fully matures. Leaf color is light green with a covering of soft, tiny hairs that can give confer a silvery appearance. In addition to it's pleasing foliage, the plant bears numerous small bright yellow flowers in the fall. Gardeners with sandy soils will be equally pleased to know that this plant does best in full sun, dry areas. No fertilizers required- ever. Plant silk grass in a group for a striking fall flower display or intermixed for foliage color variation throughout the year. Morus Rubra
Red Mulberry (Morus rubra): For those gardeners that are blessed to have rich soil with well-balanced moisture, just one red mulberry tree will address our cultural trifecta- a Florida native plant, with edible fruit, and good for biodiversity. In ideal conditions, this tree can grow up to 50 feet. Mulberry fruits are popular with birds and squirrels- one mature tree's crop can be bountiful enough for your kitchen, your
Chamaecrista Fasciculata
friends, and the neighborhood wildlife. Red mulberry does best in full sun and one tree is all you need.
Partridge Pea (Chamaecrista fasciculata): Every reader should have this plant- not just for its showy yellow flowers- but also to do our part in aiding the survival of bumblebees and several other kinds of pollinators. As some of us know, all our native bumblebees across the country are now either threatened or endangered. Partridge pea does best in full sun with welldrained soils. Though the plant is an annual, it reseeds easily to ensure future generations. Several species of butterflies use this plant as their larval host. Choose partridge pea for easy care and a no-fuss gardening approach. Wild Petunia (Ruellia carolinensis): For gardeners that irrigate their yards on the occasion they remember to, consider wild petunia for its adaptability. This plant can tolerate dry spells and works across all light conditions. This short-lived perennial has blue
Ruellia Carolinensis
Conradina grandiflora or lavender flowers and is perfect when paired with other low-growing plants or in a single, large mat. Dry seed pods can be easily harvested for growing more. Propagation via summertime cuttings is also possible. Wild petunia serves as the larval host for at least two different butterfly species. For varying soil, light, and moisture requirements, choose this pretty plant.
Large Flowered Conradina (Conradina grandiflora): For gardeners that like to boast about a rare find, consider this novelty that is only found at reputable nurseries. This plant has fragrant leaves which leads to its other common name- 'false rosemary'. Its beautiful light purple flowers are a magnet for bumblebees in spring. This plant's historical range hugs the east coast of central and south Florida. Unsurprisingly, it prefers sandy, dry soils and full sun. Propagation is primarily done through cuttings. Use this plant in a group or interspersed with other droughttolerant plants. It never needs any fertilizer. By buying this plant from a reputable source, gardeners help spread a conservation message for this plant as well.
Hotspots.LGBT | 89
Solidago stricta
Symphyotrichum carolinianum
Wand Goldenrod (Solidago stricta): When most people think of goldenrod, they think of their larger cousins that rapidly overtake open areas. But wand goldenrod is different. It does not propagate primarily through underground rhizomes- so you should expect this plant to stay in place. Goldenrods do not cause allergies- however, they do bloom around the same time as ragweed which has led to this common misunderstanding. A shorter species in the goldenrod family, it only grows 3 to 5 feet and has showy, small yellow flowers tightly arranged on a floral spike. A perennial, expect this plant to go dormant during cold winter spells only to reemerge back in spring. Propagation is easily done by seeds. This plant prefers sandier, well-drained soils with occasional watering. It can thrive in full sun or part shade with no fertilizer needs. Consider this adaptable plant in landscapes that need an extra pop of yellow.
Climbing Aster (Symphyotrichum carolinianum): Finally, for a plant that can be trellised! Climbing aster is particularly striking in the fall- the entire woody vine is profuse with beautiful, small lavender flowers. Because climbing aster blooms late in season, it is highly sought after by pollinators when few other options are available. Climbing aster does best in wet soils- consider planting one near a roof downspout away from underground plumbing. If left unchecked, climbing aster takes on a
90 | Hotspots.LGBT
tangled appearance. But with just a little bit of guidance, this plant can be shaped by any gardener. When many other plants are preparing for encroaching winter, count on this plant to give a final burst of flowers for a fall farewell.
This article may seem 'intermediate' for experienced gardeners that already understand the importance of Florida native plants. They may want to elevate their technique from 'right native plant, right place' to 'right native plant, right historical place'. For those advanced growers that are ready for the next level, check out George Gann's work at the Institute for Regional Conservation's 'Natives for Your Neighborhood' where his team has meticulously listed historical plants by zip code that were found before being displaced by urban sprawl at regionalconservation.org/beta/nfyn. Plants include, but are not limited to, those that have specialized to very wet conditions, unusual shrubs and ferns, and rare specimen trees that can be found in reputable nurseries. For readers in Central Florida, consider using the Florida Native Plant Society database that provides less-nuanced, but still very good, information at fnps.org/plants. By choosing Florida native plants, each of us is doing a small part in restoring La Florida for the enjoyment of future generations. For more info, visit, careresource.org.
