Hotspots Central Exclusive Interview by Mike Halterman Scottish actor and singer Alan Cumming has beenahouseholdnameintheUnitedStatesforover 20 years. First appearing on screens stateside in the film Romy and Michele's High School Reunion, he went on to gain millions of fans through his appearances on the stage (in Shakespeare plays as well as the musical Cabaret), on the silver screen (the X-Men franchise) and on the small screen, most recently wrapping up a seven-year commitment as a featured cast member on CBS's legal drama The GoodWife.
Central Florida audiences had a chance to see Cumming's cabaret act, called "Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs", when he performed at Tampa's Straz Center last February. This year, Orlando audiences will be in for a treat as he brings his updated "Sappy Songs" cabaret show to the Dr. Phillips Center on Saturday, March 4 at 8 p.m. Cumming will be accompanied on the piano by show director and Emmy Award winner Lance Horne. Tickets start at $35 and can be bought online by goingtodrphillipscenter.org.
It was a big honor to speak with Alan Cumming about his cabaret show and his successful career in show business in this exclusive interview for Hotspots Central.
Welcome to Florida! What are some of the things you like most about visiting the Sunshine State? I really like that it feels like I'm going back in time to another era. Everything has a slower pace, I love the Art Deco architecture...when I visit, it always feels like I am entering a differentreality.
Before you come to Orlando, you'll be in West Palm Beach, performing at the Kravis Center's 25th anniversary celebration. How excited are you to be involved, and to perform alongside one of Broadway's legends, your friend Patti LuPone? I love Patti. I think she's hilarious. I think it's a big honor to be
performing with her and all my friendswhoarecoming, likeDarren [Criss]. MichaelFeinsteinistheone who brought all of us down and I'm sure it's going to be a great night, helpingtheKravisCentercelebrate their milestone. I'm not even sure what I'm going to be doing yet, but it'sfuntothinkaboutitandplanitall out because a special night calls foraspecialperformance.
You've actually performed "Ladies Who Lunch" from Company, which Patti LuPone has also sung, in your act that's coming to Orlando. How did you go about selecting the songs for your show? How does eachone"speaktoyou"? They'reallsongsthatIemotionally connect to. They're either songs
I've always wanted to perform and couldn't because I was pursuing other roles, or ones I grew to love over the years. I don't think I have a beautiful singing voice, I don't think people necessarily see me to hear mesing...Ithinktheywantmetoact. I can'tjustsing...Ihavetofeelit,Ihave toactitout.
What else can audiences expect from you when they see you here in Orlando? If people haven't seen me in concert before, I think they are going to be in for a shock. People aren't going to be prepared to feel so many emotions. They're going to be moved, they're going to laugh and cry. It's definitely an eveningofsurprises.

If people haven't seen me in concert before,
I think they are going to be in for a shock. People aren't going to be prepared to feel so many emotions.
Which do you find most rewarding: singing or acting? Idon'tseeadifference. Inthisshow, there'scomedy, there's singing, and there's definitely acting. I do find this show rewarding because the audience can connect with me directly, there is no veil of a character there, as much as I say it's "acting." It's actingtheemotion. It's"actingasmyself."
A reader question: "Cabaret is coming to Central Florida. What drew you back in to this musical as you returned to the role of Master of Ceremonies once more?" It was a combination of things, but I felt that we're in a different generation now. Sixteen years had passed, and it's even more timely now than two years ago when I returned to Cabaret. It is so important to heed the messages in the show, to embrace differences and also to be vigilant in the face of rising extremism. To be honest with you, I wish I was doing Cabaret on Broadway right now.
The messages of the musical are so important, and theyneedtocontinuebeingsaid.
Let me end with one more reader question: "I loved your performance in The Good Wife. Are there any plans for you to return to a weekly television series?" As a matter of fact, there are. There's a long way to go, but if all goes well, I might be back on telly on CBS in the fall. The script is written by the author James Patterson, and the show is about a Yale professor of behavioralstudieswhousedtobeaCIAoperative, and he gets involved in an NYPD case, working with a female police officer. He's also a gay man, and I like that the character's gayness is the fourth or fifth most interesting thing about him. There are so many levels of drama and social interactions that will make it really interesting. Iamhopingforthebest!

Valentine's Day is coming, and we here at Hotspots Central celebrate those who have been so fortunate to find true love. Recently I sat down with six prominent Central Florida LGBT and allied couples and asked them about the first time they celebrated Cupid's day together, and what they plan to do this year. The responses are sure to make you smile.
Don Granatstein & Susan Unger Orlando
How did you spend your very first Valentine's Day as a couple? Don: Our first Valentine's Day together was in Toronto, February 1986. We had a fancy dinner [and I gave her] roses and chocolates.
Do you have anything special planned for Valentine's Day this year? We'll have dinner at the Rainbow CafĂŠ, and lots of loving.

How did you spend your very first Valentine's Day as a couple? Mark: This year we celebrate 40 years together! For our first Valentine's Day 40 years ago, Carrie bought me roses...then you can guess what happened next.
Do you have anything special planned for Valentine's Day this year? We're going to be very happy working on renovations to our new home together.

Carne ChopHouse (1536 E. 7th Ave., Tampa) is one of my favorite places to eat in the Ybor City district. I was first introduced to Carne when I took advantage of their weekly prime rib special, which I found to be superb. I knew even more people needed to know about their topnotch food. I called ahead to let the management at Carne ChopHouse ("Carne" for short) know that I was interested in writing a food feature on their beautiful restaurant. I let Jason Fernandez, the owner, know it was my birthday. He insisted that I should let him throw a birthday dinner for me and two friends. Little did I know that I would have suchamemorablebirthday, andI havethestaffatCarnetothank. We arrived at Carne, which is housed in the former El Centro EspaĂąol, once the hub of Spanish-American social activity in Ybor City. After being
seated, Jason Fernandez introduced himself to my friends and I and waxed nostalgic about the building. His parents had met for the very first time in El Centro EspaĂąol, so the restaurant holds a special place in his heart, one that transcends a typical bond between restaurateur and restaurant. We dined in the main room, but there is also a private dining room, a bar and a wine cellarontheproperty. After greeting us and getting to know us a little bit, Jason introduced us to Stone Pilkenton, the general manager of Carne, who would be taking care of our dining experience. He decided that we would get to sample some of the best dishes Carne had to offer. The staff selected the dishes, and we were told that if there were any dishes that caught our eye on the menu, wecouldgivethematryaswell. Stone started us out with an
appetizer sampler, consisting of deviled eggs ($5.99 for a halfdozen), fried onion strings, and tuna sashimi ($11.99), which consists of seared rare tuna, citrus jicama slaw, and wasabi aioli. The tuna sashimi had so many dynamic flavor profiles and was instantly addictive. My friend Melissa loved the deviled eggs, noting that they were seasoned very well and that the addition of crumbled bacon on thetopwasgenius. Theappetizerroundwasn'tover yet, though; Stone insisted we try the cheese fries poutine ($7.99): Yukon gold potatoes are smothered in cheddar sauce, brownvealgravy, bacon, scallions, andtoppedwithafriedegg. Icould write an entire book just on the poutine; the taste was absolutely heavenly, and is a perfect appetizer for a special occasion if you feel like splurging, caloriewise. The addition of the fried egg
yolk with the cheese and the gravy was akin to the cherry on top of a grand dessert. The appetizers were served with a 2012 bottle of Pouilly-FuissĂŠ. I don't normally drink but since it was my birthday, I made an exception. The dry white wine paired perfectly with the tuna andthepoutineinparticular. As we waited for dinner, the three of us shared their signature Caesar salad ($6.99), which consists of an entire Romaine heart, Parmesan crisps and seasoned croutons, and a homemade roasted garlic Caesar dressing. The salad is fairly large and delicious, so make a note accordingly if you want to continue on to dinner (anddessert!). Then it came time for dinner! We wereservedanumberofentreesso we could get an idea of Carne's full menu and what each dish has to offer. Firstwasthechurrascosteak ($18.99), a marinated skirt steak topped with caramelized onions, served with red beans and rice and a parmesan-crusted Roma tomato. This was one of my favorites; my friends could barely get a taste! The steak is paired well
with the red beans and rice and is a wonderful nod to Ybor's Spanish heritage. Then we were served the NewYorkstrip(14oz.,$26.99)witha
loaded baked potato. I immediately attacked the potato while my friends tried the steak, which they thought was cooked wonderfully and seasoned to perfection. The steak was served with a hearty red wine, a 2012 Luigi RighettiAmarone. Oneofmyfavoritescamenext:a dinner-sizedportionofthecomfort food favorite, chicken pot pie ($14.99). The golden brown crust wasthickandflaky, andthechicken in creamy veloutĂŠ was to die for. I would have ordered another if I thoughtIcouldcompleteit! Finally,I knew I had to try one more entree after I saw a neighboring table
enjoyit:thePallosBrothersChicken and Waffles ($16.99). A special South Tampa recipe, the chicken is served with Belgian waffles, butter and maple syrup. The only person who can cook better chicken is my mother. The seasoning was divine and the partnership of chicken and waffles with the maple syrup...I now have an all-time favorite dish at Carne. Then the dessert tray came. I had to rely on my friends to do the heavy lifting with this task, because I'd eaten so much already! Out of all the desserts, which included tres leches ($5.99), caramel flan ($5.99), and red velvet cake ($7.99), my favorite was the delightfully decadent chocolate creme pie ($5.99), which included Godiva whipped cream and an Oreo crust. There is something sweet for every taste at Carne. Believe me,Iknow! My friends and I were all smiles when we left Carne. I had a great birthday and everyone had a great feast. You should dine at Carne and let them make your eveningaspecialone!

Was there an exact moment when you knew being a chef and a restaurateur would be your career choice? I never wanted to be a chef or restaurateur, because I was raised in the industry. I wanted to pursue figure skating. I was in New York after a couple of tours, and at that time I thought about pursuing musical theatre. When I was there, I took a job in a restaurant because I needed to make money. I didn't enjoy being in the front of the house, so I worked back of the house. I decided to go to culinary school, and at first I thought, "Hey, maybe then my dad can pay my rent for a year and a half." But I ended up loving to cook. I love it as much as I lovedskating. [laughs] The food is all Thai fusion bar snacks. We have a sushi bar, and of course our claim to fame is the PM Burger. There's a great craft beer list. Music students, William Morris agents, celebrities, theyallcomein. It'sarealhipplace. BLVD is two doors down and it has recently been revamped to have an Americana taste and feel. We have great wings and burgers. Then of course across the street from there is my parents' Thai restaurant and market. You can go in there and meet them and see where I rollerskated for customers!
Then there's Suzy Wong's House of Yum, which is partnered with Tribe and Play, the largest drag theater and dance club complex in Nashville. At Suzy Wong's I serve Asian-inspired small plates. Then of course Suzy Wong is the "Ronald McDonald" of the restaurantandshemakeslotsofappearances. Tell us the story behind Suzy Wong. How did you decide to use her as a marketing tool for your business brand? She came about after the restaurant opened. I was starting to work with the partners at Play, and I realized I missed performing on stage. Halloween is when many budding queens debut, and I performed that night at Play, and the rest is history. I didn't even know there was going to be a full-time "Suzy Wong", much less one that would be a performer who represents a brand, so I am very happy with how "Suzy'sstory"hastranspired.
What's coming up for you in 2017? I'm the 46th Miss Gay America, so I have a very busy year ahead of me. There is a legacy to uphold, and it's my job to reign with that in mind, and to make sure the next Miss Gay America truly represents that illustrious legacy. It's my duty and I take that very seriously. In February I will be visiting Las Vegas as a guest of Coco Montrese, who recently bought a preliminary for All American Goddess. I will also be going to Jacksonville to take a photograph with 15 other national titleholders as a symbol of unity. After that, I will be taking part in a show there called "Royalty Stands United." Then I go to Telluride Ski Week...oh, and I was asked to judge the U.S. Open Professional Figure Skating Championship in May as Suzy Wong! Nowthat'sanhonor! ¡la vida es una fiesta!
C
¡No estoy bromeando!
Life is a Party! Well, I trust you all had a great New Year's Eve. How are you doing with those resolutions? I actually worked on some new year resolutions of my own like freeing my sweatshop child laborers I was keeping in my basement, stop photobombing strangers' wedding photos and release the cure for making solid fecal matter when using the bathroom after a Taco Bell meal. I know what you are thinking and the answer is yes, I am a hero. How was your weekend by the way? Mine was fantastic! I had to learn belly dancing and how to impersonate a woman to lure some spies into my web
of lies and steal their secret plans on destruction in American soil. Also I performed open heart surgery on baby seals and wrestled an 8-feet tall gorilla as an attempt to save two homeless children lost in the jungle. OK, fine! I did not do any of those things! My life is so boring that finding extra toys in a box of Cracker Jack makes my day. All I do is go to work, eat cereal bowls four times a day and pleasure myself to Hanes commercials. I have a full life. I was looking for things that are celebrated on this month just to find something to talk
have a party and drink like a fish! Old lady Belen is what we call Santa Clause's wife and she gifts those who did not receive a present from Santa on Christmas because “he forgot”. The real reason why she was created was to help mom and dad save some cash by buying toys the day after Christmas when they are not as pricy and on sale. Three Kings Day celebrates the three Wise Men who gifted things to baby Jesus, therefore, we also receive presents on this day. And the Candelarias is the day we use to make a fire to burn our used Christmas trees (the
about that relates to this issue and found some interesting things. Aside from Groundhog Day on February 2nd, Valentine's Day on the 14th and Black History Month, I found out we celebrate Umbrella Day, Love Your Pet Day and Boy Scouts Day. These are real holidays. Feel free to look them up. I'm not kidding! However, I think that when it comes to creating additional holidays for no reason at all, my Hispanic people take the cake. While most of you celebrated Christmas and New Year's Eve, we had the Three Kings Day, The Candelarias and The Old Lady Belen's Day in addition to those. Leave it up to us to find more reasons to over eat,
real kind of course) and have a party as well around the fire. I'm telling you, whenever you run out of ideas to celebrate anything and need a reason to eat, drink and be merry, give your Latino friends a call. We got you. I'm actually feeling inspired to come up with new made up holidays. We should celebrate the day canned food was invented or have a soup day or humor month or anti-boredom month. Would you like to hear something crazy? All of these already exist! They are actual celebratory days in our calendar! Regardless of what you enjoy celebrating this month, do it safely and in good company. Happy (whatever you are celebrating) month!

Hotspots readers know that I am a big fan of Parliament House Orlando's Rainbow CafĂŠ. Located inside the Parliament House Orlando complex at 410 N. Orange Blossom Trail, the Rainbow CafĂŠ serves breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week. Recently I had the chance to eat there for breakfast and for dinner, and I must share my experiencewithyou. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and it's not just for the morning anymore: you can order breakfast at the Rainbow CafĂŠ from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. (and even later for special events). If you're looking for dishes that taste good, are very filling, and don't break the bank, the items on the breakfast menu are for you. I ordered a three-egg omelet with ham and cheese ($7.95); if you love a good Denver omelet, you can request tomatoes, onions
and green peppers (even mushrooms!) as well. I'm a Southerner so I couldn't let breakfast go by without ordering a half-order of biscuits and gravy ($3;fullorder$4.45). Everything was made to order and prepared very quickly. The biscuits and gravy came out first, and I was immediately hooked by the fluffy biscuits and the savory sausage gravy. It was definitely a great way to start the morning! Then the omelet came out with homefriesandtoast(youaregiven a choice of white or wheat toast as well as a choice of home fries or grits). I immediately cut up the omelet and combined the eggs, cheese and ham with the potatoes. Their three-egg omelet is very big, so bring your strongest appetite! After a breakfast of champions like the one I had, I was ready to tackle anything the day hadinstoreforme. Just before sunset, I stopped
by once more to have dinner. This time I ordered the Southern fried chicken dinner ($12.95), which consists of four pieces of chicken, fried to a golden brown, and served with mashed potatoes, gravy, and vegetables. (The vegetable selection changes regularly; I was served asparagus.) It is also served with a choice of soup or salad; I requestedasideCaesarsalad. I was very pleasantly surprised at how much food there was. The four pieces of chicken were all fairly large pieces, and I noticed that all of the pieces of chicken were white-meat, even though I didn't have a preference. The meat was very tender and the seasoning and breading paired particularly well with the brown gravy on the mashed potatoes. (I may have dipped a piece of chicken in the potatoes and eaten them together that way...don't act like you haven't
and dial 711. From there, room service will answer and you can place your order directly with them for pick-up or delivery to your room. I prefer eating in the Rainbow Café dining room, though, because the servers are very friendly and I always end up conversing with fellow resort guestswhiledining. What else is on the menu? You'll find a whole list of burgers (priced from $6.95 to $8.45), various salads ($2.75-$8.95 done it!) The asparagus was fresh and was a good complement to themeatandpotatoes. I also ordered buffalo wings to go, which I ate later in the evening. The wings could have been a little dinner in and of themselves (eight wings, with celery and choice of ranch or blue cheese dressing, $6.45). The buffalo sauce was the perfect mix of spicy and buttery, as buffalo wings should be, and I found myself dipping the celery in theleftoverbuffalosauce. If you're staying at Parliament House or its sister timeshare, The Gardens, you don't even have to
leave your room to try the dishes at the Rainbow Café. All you have to do is pick up your room phone

Other dinner specials include Yankee pot roast ($10.95, Thursdays), prime rib au jus ($15.95, Saturdays) and baby back ribs with corn on the cob and coleslaw($11.95,Sundays).
