INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY Faster and less risky than conventional surgery and other treatments Our interventional radiology experts can offer hope to cancer patients who have exhausted other treatment options. The Interventional team performs a cutting-edge procedure for inoperable liver tumors called yttrium-90 radioembolization (“Y-90”). Radioembolization combines embolization and radiation therapy to treat liver cancer. Tiny glass or resin beads filled with the radioactive isotope yttrium Y-90 are placed inside the blood vessels that feed a tumor. This blocks the supply of blood to the cancer cells and delivers a high dose of radiation to the tumor while sparing normal tissue. Other tumor ablation treatments for kidney, liver, bone, lung, and spine include: Radiofrequency ablation that uses electrical energy, Cryoablation using extreme cold and Microwave ablation using extreme heat to kill cancer cells.
In addition, we perform: Percutaneous vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty and sacroplasty for treatment of painful vertebral compression fractures resistant to medical therapy; endovascular treatment (minimally invasive procedures that are done inside the blood vessels) for peripheral arterial disease; and endovascular varicose vein treatment of abnormal malfunctioning veins including cosmetic spider veins. MiraDry is an FDA-cleared aesthetic treatment for hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). MiraDry safely reduces sweat and odor glands in the underarm.
WOMEN’S IMAGING Dedicated to the early detection of breast cancer and other forms of breast disease Our women’s imaging section performs screening and diagnostic mammography, image guided breast biopsies and interventional procedures using ultrasound guided, stereotactic MRI and stereotactic mammography. We provide the area with the only diagnostic and interventional radiology services in imaging facilities with advanced technology. Hot Springs Radiology also supports our community by working with groups such as Susan G. Komen. We do all of this while recognizing that each person has unique needs when medical imaging is necessary. Hot Springs Radiology understands that while we are highly skilled in the process of medical imaging, we do everything we can to tailor each person's experience into one that is caring and compassionate.

5 Blood Clot Risk Factors Know how to lower the risk

lood clots can affect anyone and may lead to significant health problems, but some people are at higher risk for life-threatening blood clots. One in four people worldwide die of conditions caused by blood clots, also known by the medical term "thrombosis." In fact, thrombosis is the third leading vascular diagnosis after heart attack and stroke, according to the American Heart Association. There are two types of life-threatening blood clots, also called venous thromboembolism (VTE). Deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, is a clot in a deep vein in the leg, arm or other large veins. A pulmonary embolism, or PE, occurs when a clot breaks free and travels to the lungs, blocking some or all of the blood supply. Although VTE can be fatal, many, if not most, cases are preventable. Talk with a health care provider to understand your risk and use this information from the American Heart Association to understand the circumstances that may lead to higher risk: Extended travel: Traveling longer than 8 hours, whether by plane, car, bus or train, can increase risks for life-threatening blood clots. Being seated for long periods can slow blood flow, and high altitudes can activate the body's blood-clotting sys-
8

tem. Consider wearing compression socks or finding time to stretch or walk around when traveling to aid in proper blood flow. Estrogen-based birth control: Estrogenbased contraceptives can increase the risks for a life-threatening blood clot. Risks are present whether the estrogen is delivered into the blood stream with pills, a patch, an injection or a vaginal ring contraceptive. The risk is highest when first starting these prescriptions as the hormonal changes can cause blood cells to bind together more readily. Taking estrogen contraceptives can increase risks if you have factors such as inherited bloodclotting disorders, a family history of blood clots, surgery, obesity or plans for prolonged travel. Recent hospital stays: Roughly 50 percent of life-threatening blood clots happen within three months of a hospitalization, surgery or traumatic injury, though only one in four adults knows that hospitalization is a risk factor for VTE. Hospital patients at the greatest risk are those with limited ability to move, people with previous history of blood clots, patients age 60 and older, people who have abnormal blood-clotting conditions and patients who have spent time in an intensive care or coronary care unit. Pregnancy and childbirth: Pregnant
women are at four times greater risk of a life-threatening blood clot than non-pregnant women. The risk increases after delivery. Blood clots cause approximately 10 percent of all maternal deaths in the United States, with pulmonary embolism being the leading cause. The blood-clotting system is activated during pregnancy to protect the woman from fatal bleeding during labor and delivery. In addition, the growing baby presses on the veins of the pelvis, slowing blood flow. Other risk factors for a blood clot during pregnancy and childbirth include inherited blood-clotting disorders, a history of blood clots, older age at the time of pregnancy, obesity, cesarean delivery and major bleeding after delivery. Cancer patients typically spend significant time in the hospital which often means they are lying still for long periods and are more likely to have surgery or receive chemotherapy, which also increases risks. Cancers in bones, ovaries, the brain or pancreas and lymph nodes are associated with the highest incidence of a life-threatening blood clot. If you have concerns about your risk for blood clots, especially if you have multiple risk factors, consult with your health care provider about how to lower the risk. here isn't a better time than now to start getting fit with health information and products so easily accessible. Simply incorporate the basics into your daily routine good nutrition, adequate exercise and a daily supplement - and start down the path toward better health. Plan a Nutritious Diet the dietary guidelines for americans describes a healthy diet as one that emphasizes fruits, vegetables, lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, nuts, whole grains and fat-free or low-fat milk products. it should be low in saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, salt and added sugar. * Warm weather makes fresh produce more easily accessible. eat more fruits and vegetables by setting freshly washed and prepared produce on the kitchen counter or at eye level in the fridge. at every meal, make sure half your plate is made up of fruit and vegetable servings. * one-fourth of your plate at every meal should be made up of grains, such as wheat, rice, oats, cornmeal or barley. people who eat whole grains as part of

a healthy diet have a reduced risk of some chronic diseases. * the remaining one-fourth of your plate should be lean or low-fat cuts of meat, plant-based protein or seafood. Get Regular Exercise the department of Health and Human Services recommends an adequate amount of exercise every day. this guide can point to the right amount of exercise to add to your schedule: * get at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity every week. For best results, spread the time out over several days. * do strength training exercises at least twice a week. lifting weights builds muscle, which means the body burns more calories - even at rest. * it's important to keep in mind that when people are active, they produce more free radicals. the antioxidants found in supplements can help buffer the negative effects of the workout. improving your diet, exercising regularly, taking a daily supplement and getting enough restorative sleep are all important steps to overall wellness. Work to incorporate each step into your daily routine until you reach your goal of good health, and find more health-conscious tips at eLivingToday.com.

5 Reasons You Avoid Getting Screened for Colorectal Cancer but You Shouldn't Make it a priority in 2019

t is estimated that more than 51,000 people [1] will die of colorectal cancer [2] this year, but a startling number - 50 percent - could have been saved had they been screened.[3] Despite this, screening rates are still low. But why? Dr. Howard Wright, a family medicine physician in Michigan, has spoken with countless patients who have avoided screening for one reason or another. Nina Mayo, 54, was one of those people at first, and she isn't alone. One in three Americans are not up-to-date with their colorectal cancer screening.[4] Here, Wright debunks some of the myths of screening and why you should make it a priority in 2019. I'm healthy, so I won't get cancer.

percent of whom do not have a family history of the disease and otherwise live healthy lives.[6] "It can happen to anyone who thinks they eat healthy and they follow all the rules of health. Everyone has some risk," said Wright, whose uncle died in his early 70s after being diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer. "We had no history of colorectal cancer in our family whatsoever. He didn't want to be bothered with [screening]." When Nina turned 50, she didn't see a reason to get screened because she wasn't high risk for colorectal cancer. Colonoscopy is the only option. Nina was one of those people who thought a colonoscopy was her only option and refused to listen to her doctor's counsel to be screened. "My doctor said, 'You're 53, and you haven't had a colonoscopy. Can I talk you into getting
one?'" Nina recalled. "I said no." But she soon learned that there are several different tests that can detect colorectal cancer and polyps. Wright encourages people to speak with their doctor about their options. After Nina discussed it over with her doctor, they identified that she was a candidate for a colorectal cancer screening called Cologuard - a noninvasive option that uses advanced technology to detect blood in stool and biomarkers associated with colorectal cancer in stool DNA.[7] (To better understand if Cologuard is right for you and understand all your options, download this discussion guide, which can help you talk to your health care provider.) Screenings are only to detect cancer. Regular screening according to guidelines is, in fact, one of the most powerful ways of detecting colorectal cancer. Most

of Wright's patients don't have any symptoms but choose to be screened proactively to check for potentially precancerous growths - called polyps - that could develop into cancer if left undetected for too long. "Doing nothing [is] playing with fire," Wright said. Nina agreed to try Cologuard. The test was mailed to her house and, a few weeks later, her doctor called her with some shocking news. The screening detected biomarkers associated with precancer or colorectal cancer. During a follow-up diagnostic colonoscopy, her physicians found two growths, both of which they expected to become cancerous.
Only old people get colorectal cancer. "The doctor's assessment left us in total shock. I think both my husband and I were just numb. We came home, and we both went into total denial," Nina recalled. "I'm 53 years old; this is not happening. A lot of people think this is an old person's disease. It's not." If precancer or cancer is found, I'll spend months getting treatment. If caught early, lengthy cancer treatment programs may not be necessary. In Nina's case, her gastroenterologist was able to remove the growths, which were found to be precancerous, and she got
right back to living her life. "[Getting screened] changed my life. Had I not [been screened], in hindsight, I may have been in very, very big trouble. I am lucky that I did do it," Nina said. Since her diagnosis, Nina has been traveling the world with her husband. They recently celebrated their 30th anniversary with a trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and are planning a trip to Ireland and Scotland. "I say, 'Look at what happened to me. Look at what could have happened to me. Let's just do this," she said. "I'm living my best life right now. We are definitely not taking things for granted now."

Advances in Regenerative Medicine
Potential repairing or replacing damaged human cells, tissues and organs
R
MEDICAL GuIDE 2019
DGIwIre
egenerative medicine has been the subject of great attention in recent years, for its potential applications in repairing or replacing damaged human cells, tissues and organs. The field seems to be advancing at an increasingly rapid rate—its applications quickly becoming less a futuristic pipe dream, and more a tangible reality. With such promising benefits, and now with so many researchers working in collaboration globally, regenerative medicine continues to transform the scope of human medicine. Here are the 4 most interesting advances in regenerative medicine: • Regenerated Tracheas for Transplant– A major focus within regenerative medicine is on the development of regenerated or artificial organs for transplant. At the forefront of this arena is Harvard Apparatus Regenerative Technology, developer of regenerated tracheas for transplant in patients with damaged airways. Its bioreactors have been used in 8 surgeries and five of those surgeries have used the Company’s synthetic regenerated tracheas–which consist of an artificial scaffold, seeded with
16
HOT SpRInGS MeDICAL GUIDe 2019
the patient’s own cells to prevent rejection. In 2011, Harvard Apparatus Regenerative Technology astonished the world with the first ever transplant of a regenerated airway using a synthetic scaffold. Harvard Apparatus Regenerative Technology’s trachea technology could eventually lead to similar transplants for the lungs, heart and GI tract. • 3D Bioprinting– 30 years after the invention of the 3D printer, bioprinting— the process of extracting a patient’s cells, growing them, and then loading them into a printer cartridge for the printing of live human tissue—has come to fruition. This technology is being utilized as a viable way for researchers to test potential drugs and treatments on human tissue, without having to use an actual patient. While currently, printed tissues are only being used in medical research, the ultimate goal is to create tissues for organ repair, or even the printing of whole functional organs for transplant. • Stem Cell Treatments for Vision LossVision loss is thought to affect more than 20 million people over the age of 18 in the U.S.; it can be detrimental to an individ-
ual’s productivity, or even completely disabling. Thankfully, stem cell treatments are being studied for their ability to treat different forms of blindness. One consists of inducing embryonic stem cells into cells that normally reside in the retina, which could in turn, be transplanted into patients for retina regeneration. Similar advancements are being made in the cornea, where researchers have already successfully regenerated a damaged cornea in a laboratory setting. • Stem Cell Treatments for Heart Repair- Heart disease has been the number one killer of Americans for a very long time, accounting for approximately one in every four deaths. While advancements over the last few decades have improved some of the available treatments for heart disease, existing therapies do not have the ability to directly reverse some of the scarring and damage that can stem from it. Researchers are exploring various ways in which stem cells can be injected into patients to regenerate the tissues of the heart, and potentially ward off heart failure. Currently, different combinations of cells and cell types are being studied for their potential regenerative effects.

Removing Heavy Metal Toxins
Atherosclerosis, Chelation and Chelating Agents
I
By: Ray Smith
n our everyday life, our body is exposed to various toxins almost all the time. We are facing toxin attacks in the food, in the water we drink even in the air we breath. Heavy metal toxins like Mercury, Lead and Cadmium gets deposited and builds up plaque in arteries and blood vessels and narrows the passage for blood flow (medically termed as Atherosclerosis). This in turn leads to all sorts of problems and even heart attacks and might ultimately require surgery to bypass the blocked arteries. Chelation (pronounced key-LAYshun) Therapy is the process in which chemicals bond with minerals and toxic metals and remove them from the body. The word Chelation has been derived from the Greek word "chele", meaning to "claw". The doctors have used chelation therapy for a long time now and the most important chelating agents used by them is EDTA (Ethylene Diamine tetra acetic acid). This is a synthetic amino acid that is highly effective in binding
18
HOT SPRInGS MEDICAL GuIDE 2019
with the harmful metals and releasing them out of the body through the urine. Chelation Therapy is definitely the most effective alternative to surgery for Atherosclerotic vascular disease. This therapy when applied properly has considerable effect on patients and thousands of patients have been cured without any need for bypass surgery or angioplasty. There are two types of Chelation, classified mainly based on the way they are applied; Intravenous Chelation, where the chelating agent is injected through the veins and Oral Chelation, where the patient takes the chelating agent through his mouth just as any other medicine. Intravenous chelation is comparatively costly and would necessarily require a doctor to assist the patient, however, oral chelation is one of the easiest processes and is comparatively cheap. Any oral chelating agent would contain a synthetic amino acid called EDTA along with the other components like Royal Jelly, honeybee pollen,
unprocessed honey, natural vitamin C and B12. EDTA is particularly effective in removing heavy metals like Mercury from our circulatory system. An Oral Chelating agent becomes more effective due to the presence of components like Royal Jelly and honey. Our body perceives it as food and it gets absorbed in the system very fast where as the EDTA in the chelating agent binds with the toxic metals and removes them out of the body. Oral Chelating agents like PCA-Rx (sold at www.awakennutrition.com) are highly effective and helps you to prevent plaques and narrowing of blood vessels by bonding with the toxic metals and removing them out of the body. This would help you to remove toxic metals from your blood flow while gaining and maintaining you heart's health. When thousand s of patients today are adopting this chelation therapy to fight against atherosclerosis and maintain a healthy heart, why should you be left out?

Healthy Mocktails
Refresh Your Summer with Delicious Drinks
T
MEDICAL GuIDE 2019
BPT
here's nothing better on a hot summer day than kicking back and relaxing with a cold, tasty and refreshing beverage - and there are so many great options to choose from. But why not add a little excitement to your summer by choosing something to drink that's fun and colorful, super healthy and delicious, too? You can skip the dehydrating alcohol, artificial flavorings or unhealthy refined sugar and opt to serve up a natural, fruitbased drink - a "mocktail" - when you're planning your next summer soiree, or to enjoy with friends and family of all ages anytime the weather heats up. A mocktail not only replenishes your vital fluids, hydrating you and providing important nutritional content your body needs, but it's yummy, fun and festive to drink. When you add a super food like a Chiquita banana to your mocktail, you're adding vitamins and minerals, including vitamin B6, which helps muscles function, boosts your immune system and helps with formation of red blood cells. Chiquita bananas are also a great source of potassium, which can help level out your blood pressure, among

other positive benefits. They provide fiber, protein, antioxidants, vitamin C, magnesium and other nutrients to your diet. Another plus? Bananas come in their own handy, naturally biodegradable, portable and easy-topeel package! No matter what kind of delectable mocktails or fruit smoothies you want to create this summer, adding bananas to the mix will provide a bonus of sweet flavor and a creamy texture to your beverage. Bananas will balance out the flavors of the more tart or acidic fruits you're using in your recipe, while they also boost the overall nutritional content of your drink. Another great thing about mocktails? They are super easy to prepare, taking only about 10 minutes of prep time. All you need is a blender and the ingredients of your choice! Serve each mocktail over crushed ice or ice cubes in a fun decorative glass and add a tiny umbrella or a small fruit skewer with berries and banana slices for a festive and delicious party presentation. Try one of these vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free recipes for delightfully refreshing, yummy mocktails:

Aromatherapy For Female Hair Loss Eight Essential Oils to Promote Growth
A
MEDICAL  GuIDE 2019
By: Melanie VonzaBuesnig
t 32 years of age, my hair suddenly started falling out by the handfuls. the hair loss began in August. By october, just two months later i was almost completely bald. other than having hair loss, my physical health was excellent. Since my medical tests all came back normal, my doctor advised me to get a good wig and get on with my life. My friends and family encouraged me to count my blessings rather than my shortcomings. they tried to convince me that i was still the same person on the inside, with or without hair. i didn't buy it. But i did get the wig and i did get on with my life. A new friend i met happened to be a hairdresser who specialized in thin, fine hair. After confiding in her, she told me about the great results some of her clients had using aromatherapy. She armed me with books and information. i absorbed it all and kept learning more until i was ready to make my own scalp formula.
22
Hot SpringS MedicAl guide 2019
there were many essential oils to choose from. i especially liked using peppermint oil. the tingling sensation it produced seemed to energize my scalp and my entire being. the scent of the oil perked me up so it was a great choice to use it the morning to get my day started. At night i would experiment with more relaxing oils such as lemon, lavender, chamomile, cypress and carrot seed. i would often sleep with the oils on my scalp and wash them out in the morning. the drifting aroma seemed to lure me into a deep sleep, helping me to wake up refreshed and revitalized. the essential oil formulas felt so healing and energizing on my scalp. it was as if i could "feel" them working! Within three months i began seeing and feeling soft new growth. three months after that my entire scalp was filled in with new hair. it's been fifteen years since my hair loss
incidence. every so often i find the beginnings of new bald patches or i notice more hair falling out than usual. As soon as i notice the hair loss i begin treating it with essential oil formulas. My hair responds quickly to the aromatherapy treatments. i've been able to stop the hair loss and start the re-growth before it becomes noticeable. At first i really didn't care how the essential oils worked. Just the fact that they did work was all i needed to know. But, because i became so fascinated with the effects and so fond of the aromas, i went on to formally study aromatherapy. i think of essential oils as a "fertilizer for hair". they increase circulation to the scalp. the increased blood supply nourishes the hair follicles. they increase oxygen supply, encourage cellular regeneration and remove toxins. they thoroughly cleanse the scalp, removing excess sebum, dead skin cells and environmental pollutants. essential oils need to be diluted with fixed oils. Jojoba and castor oil turned out to be my favorites, as even on their own they are healthy for hair and used to promote growth. choosing the essential oils to use in your formula requires some research and knowledge. certain essential oils cannot be used under certain medical conditions such as high blood pressure, pregnancy etc. Your formula will be more effective if you choose oils specifically for own condition rather than a generic hair loss formula. You can customize your formula to address your specific scalp condition, such as dry, oily, itchy, sensitive, etc. You can further customize your formula by choosing oils that blend into a scent that you enjoy. Although you apply the formula to your scalp, the healing doesn't stop there. Aromatherapy is known to produce an over-all feeling of physical, emotional and spiritual well-being that goes far beyond a better head of hair!
than any other essential oil, especially to promote hair growth. It is a powerful scalp stimulator for hair loss and to strengthen thinning hair. It is also used to shine and condition hair and to bring out highlights in dark hair. TEA TREE, (Melaleuca alternifolia) Tea tree oil has become very popular. It is anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. It is effective against any type of fungal condition of scalp such as ringworm. It is used to heal infections and to reduce itchiness. It removes build-up on the scalp and helps rejuvenate dull lifeless hair. It leaves hair soft, clean and manageable. Tea tree has a strong, clan medicinal scent. It is important to know and follow all safety guidelines before using any aromatherapy products. Essential oils must be diluted properly before applying to skin. Certain oils cannot be used if certain medical conditions are present. Enlisting the help of a trained professional aromatherapist can help ensure a safe and effective formula.

Losing my hair, handfuls at a time until I was practically bald was a painful experience for me. Fortunately I was able to overcome my hair loss and re grow my hair through the use of aromatherapy. Learning about aromatherapy soon became my passion and my field of study. For fifteen years now I have been able to control my hair loss and maintain healthy hair with aromatherapy. There are approximately 200 essential oils in use today. Of those, about 35 are commonly used for scalp and hair. Most people who work with essential oils settle into about 10 or 15 oils they can't live without. This article contains what I consider to be the top eight essential oils to stimulate and maintain hair growth. BASIL, (Ocimum basilicum). Basil oil is a powerful scalp stimulator. When applied to the scalp you can actually "feel" it working. It produces a warm, slightly tingling sensation. When I use basil I don't have to use a conditioner. My hair rinses out smooth, tangle free and squeaky clean. I've noticed that basil, more than any other essential oil, makes my hair look shiny, healthy and thicker. CARROT SEED, (Daucus carota). Carrot seed oil is superior for hair and skin that is in need of nourishment, moisture and elasticity. It is indicated for alopecia areata, fragile hair, brittle hair and falling hair. It is calming to the skin and scalp. Carrot seed oil is rich in beta-carotene, vitamins A, B1, B2, and C, essential fatty acids and other nutrients. It is expensive and harder to find than most essential oils. Although some
people find it pleasing, I am not particularly fond of the scent; but I am fond of the results! CYPRESS, (Cupressus sempervirens). Imagine your self in a quiet forest surrounded by tall Cypress tress. The aroma of cypress oil can transport you to that soothing place. Cypress is used to reduce oiliness in the scalp and is good for dandruff. I use cypress if I am making a nighttime scalp formula that I will leave in while I sleep. It clears the mind and prepares it for sleep. It is important to use only the smallest amount (1 drop) in your formula or it could have the opposite effect. I like to blend it with orange and lavender in a base of jojoba. LAVENDER, (lavendula vera) Lavender oil is a standard in hair and skin care. It has cell-regenerating properties. It is used to promote hair growth and to prevent future loss. It is effective for all hair types. Because it has the ability to regulate sebum production, it is useful for either oily or dry scalp. Lavender is often paired with rosemary in scalp and hair formulas. Together they produce an outstanding synergy for hair care. LEMON, (Citrus limon) the essential oil comes from the rind, which is high in Vitamins A, B and C. Lemon oil is very versatile. It can be used for dry or oily hair because it helps to regulate sebum production. It is anti-aging and promotes cell-regeneration. It helps to restore the hair's natural ph level. Lemon oil can produce a healthy shine, especially to blonde hair. PEPPERMINT, (Mentha piperita) If I could only have one essential oil for my hair it would be peppermint. It is refreshing and invigorating, excellent to use in the morning to get the day started! Peppermint produces a cool, tingling feeling as it energizes the scalp. It is used to promote hair growth, for dandruff and itchy scalp. ROSEMARY, (Rosmarinus officinalis) Rosemary oil is very well known for it's superior hair care qualities. For hair care, it is probably used more often

High-Level Expertise in Interventional & Diagnostic Procedures HOT SPRINGS RADIOLOGY SERVICES, LTD. Hot Springs Radiology Services, established in Arkansas for more than 80 years, provides a wide array of diagnostic and interventional services for patients across the Greater Hot Springs area. This team of skilled physicians includes board-certified radiologists with subspecialty training in neuroradiology, interventional radiology, nuclear medicine, CT, ultrasound, MRI, mammography, and musculoskeletal imaging. In addition to these longstanding services, Hot Springs Radiology also provides endovascular laser vein treatment for complications of the venous system. Interventions such as laser ablation, sclerotherapy and ambulatory phlebectomy are utilized to address varicose veins (abnormal malfunctioning veins) in order to alleviate the aching, cramping, heaviness and restless legscaused by varicose veins. Laser ablation is a minimally invasive treatment that uses laser energy to close the vein and, because no large incisions are needed, it doesn't leave unsightly scars. Elimination of the abnormal blood flow within the venous system is required for success in treatment of the pain and disability that is caused by faulty leg valves. Treatment results in improved flow of blood back to the heart with improvement in symptoms. Timely treatment can prevent more serious complications from occurring. 363 Central Avenue, Suite D • 501-623-6693 www.hsrad.com
Rejuvenate for 2019! MARNIQ LASER MarNiq Laser utilizes a fractional CO2 laser that promotes stimulation of new skin tissue growth by triggering collagen production. Take a Holistic Approach to Self-Care Live a Fulll, Happy Life

FAMIlY FEATuRES
hile you aim to live a full, happy life, achieving it starts with protecting your most valuable asset: your health. Though the pace of life and other external variables can hinder you from putting your health first, self-care should not be ignored. Proactively taking care of your physical and mental health is one of the best ways to ensure a longer, healthier life. Take charge of your overall well-being and make your health a priority through preventative measures that focus on both your body and mind. Practice relaxation techniques. Certain levels of stress in everyday life are normal, but high levels of stress over an extended period of time can take a toll on your physical and mental well-being, impacting your health and overall mood. There's no one-size-fits-all solution to managing stress, but finding an activity that promotes relaxation and allows you to free your mind is a good place to start. Activities to consider include yoga, meditation, journaling or reading. Stay up-to-date on prescriptions. Not only is it vital to remember to take your medication as prescribed each day, it's also important to monitor your prescriptions and get refills in a timely manner so you don't find yourself without a dose on any given day. If you're beginning to find that refills are taking a toll on your wallet, look into discount programs in addition to prescription insurance, such as AARP Prescription Discounts provided by OptumRx, which let members save an average of 61% on approved prescriptions not covered by their current insurance. Eat well. Even if you consistently maintain a healthy weight, it's good to pair it with a wellbalanced diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables to ensure your body is receiving an ample supply of vitamins and nutrients. Try balancing each meal by including moderately portioned foods from each food group. Don't forget to keep tabs on your water consumption as staying hydrated has numerous health benefits for your body, including keeping your skin moisturized and aiding in proper digestion. Remember annual check-ups. It may be tempting to skip out on a routine check-up if you're feeling well, but regular appointments
with your health care providers can ensure consistent health and even help catch potential concerns in the early stages before they become bigger issues. Regular checkins with your primary care physicians can help keep a consistent tracker on your health, allowing them to better provide for you and your health care needs. Standard insurance sometimes doesn't include dental or vision care, so read about programs designed for your specific needs like the AARP MyVision Care provided through EyeMed, which includes coverage for services like diabetic vision exams every six months and loss of sight benefits. Don't forget to treat yourself. A life welllived deserves a bit of a reward now and again. Whether you need a bit of a pick-meup or a "just because" incentive, add a touch
of joy to your life by treating yourself to small things such as flowers or a special meal. You can make your money go further with various discounts and coupons for items like flowers, gifts and more.
