The Hot Springs Convention Center hosts The Soul of Arkansas, an exhibit of 40 paintings by internationally recognized artist Longhua Xu. The north concourse of the convention center is being converted into an art gallery for the exhibit, which showcases the inspiration Longhua Xu finds throughout Hot Springs. “For me, I find beauty in the people around me,” he reflects. “People who share, people who care for each other – that’s the beauty, and that’s why I’m trying to record it through my paintings.” Longhua has been a resident of the Spa City for 30 years. He emigrated from China, where he taught Fine Art in the Architecture Department at the University of Shanghai.

LEGAL NOTES

WHAT IS AN ANNULMENT? *Disclaimer: This article contains basic information and in no way constitutes actual legal advice or establishes an attorney-client relationship with any individual reading this article.

I

t never fails that clients will ask a question about annulment and whether it is a possibility for the breakup of their marriage. It is not as easy or cut and dry as it appears in Las Vegas movies after a night of too much fun and questionable decisions because there are specific requirements for a marriage to be annulled (declared void).

Annulment in Arkansas Annulment is an often-misunderstood legal concept, because popular culture and religion have presented differing and often imprecise views of what an annulment is in terms of family law and domestic relations. Annulments and divorces are similar in the sense that they make a determination about marital status. However, the vital difference between them is that divorce ends an existing, valid marriage, whereas annulment simply declares that what everyone thought was a marriage was never actually a marriage at all. Basically, in the eyes of the law, an annulled marriage never really happened!

How do I Actually Annul my Marriage?? Arkansas courts interpret the annulment statutes very strictly. For instance, if a person who married while underage later tries to have the marriage annulled on the basis of minority, but does so after reaching the age of majority, it is possible that the Court will reject the claim. If you want an annulment, you must be prepared to prove your claim with certain evidence. Absent special circumstances, annulment actions ("complaints for annulment") must be filed in the circuit court of the county where the "complainant" (the person seeking the annulment, also known as the "plaintiff") resides and has lived for at least 60 days in Arkansas. Other papers may also be necessary, and both parties must follow rules for service of process. An Arkansas judge can declare a marriage null and void and annul it by court order. Both parties will be summoned to appear before the court, which will hear testimony, consider the written submissions and the law, and issue an order. Even if the "defendant" (party opposing the annulment) doesn't answer the complaint or appear at the court hearings, the plaintiff must show up and present enough evidence to support the annulment request for the record. This may mean that the plaintiff has to testify.

Because there are serious financial and custodial implications involved in an annulment, it's important to talk to a seasoned family attorney before proceeding.

Grounds for an Annulment Arkansas Code Annotated § 9-12-201 describes the grounds for obtaining an annulment in Arkansas which are very narrow. There are only four possible reasons a court might grant an annulment: • Either of the parties to the marriage is now or was incapable from “want of age” (too young to marry) to consent to the marriage. • Either of the parties to the marriage is incapable from “want of understanding” to consent to the marriage. “Want of understanding” means an inability to comprehend something intellectually (didn’t mentally know what was happening). It can also mean that a party was too intoxicated to understand (think Stu’s Vegas wedding from The Hangover). • Either of the parties to the marriage is incapable of marrying due to physical causes (impotence). • One of the parties was subjected to duress (coercion) by force or fraud, and if not for the force or fraud, would not have consented to the marriage (he/she made me do it)!

Effect of Annulment Arkansas law requires the court which decides the annulment to also decide custody and child support of the minor child or children, despite the fact that the marriage never really happened. In Arkansas, couples going through an annulment usually must separate their own property, including both assets and debts (which is a lot of fun). All these issues can get really complicated and an experienced family law attorney should be involved. Did you wake up with a new last name and regret it? Contact John S. Stobaugh at Wood, Schnipper & Britton at 501-624-1252. John Stobaugh joined Wood, Schnipper & Britton as associate attorney in March 2017. Born in McGehee, Arkansas, John earned a degree in Agricultural Economics from Texas A&M University, followed by his Juris Doctorate from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock William H. Formerly with Bell & Boyd, PLLC, John specializes in probate, estate planning, divorce, custody, adoptions, guardianships, commercial litigation, real estate transactions and property issues. Five years later, Adrianne has recently expanded, purchasing the salon location at 4832 Central Avenue and launching Whiplash Beauty & Company just in time for the Holidays! “I had rented a space out of the salon under the name Whiplash Beauty, and then I bought the salon from hairstylist Sherri Holmes, who has been in business for more than three decades in Hot Springs,” Adrianne explains, noting that Sherri will still be working her magic in the salon. "Sherri has served as a longtime mentor to me and we still work very closely together." In addition to the same great stylists and services, Adrianne is adding new product lines and strategizing future expansion. Whiplash Beauty & Company offers full-service hair, nails, eyelashes and makeup, a true all-in-one beauty shop. “We have quite a few clients who come in and while their hair is being done they can also get their nails done, etc.—just make a day of it,” Adrianne observes. “We have seven stylists now and space to expand.” Whiplash Beauty & Company also handles special events and is growing right along with Hot Springs’ destination wedding industry. “I would say that I did three weddings my first year,” recalls Adrianne. “But last year, our team did over 75 weddings!” She reveals a significant number of brides say they’re drawn to Hot Springs in part because of Garvan Woodland Gardens’ Anthony Chapel, an architectural gem set amidst natural beauty. Most weddings book services six months to a year in advance, and Adrianne notes the vast majority are from out-ofstate, everywhere from Dallas to New York to the Midwest. “We have a space where bridal parties can come in, enjoy hors d’oeuvres and mimosas—a private party right here in the salon,” she says. Whiplash Beauty & Co. can also travel off-site to your location, bringing their mobile party-and-beauty team!

Adrianne is a logistical pro, and with the salon’s full-service aspect allowing all the latest trends and techniques in hair coloring, cut and makeup, clients can get party-ready in one place. “We streamline and coordinate everything,” she explains. “I work with a wedding planner, and if we need to call in someone, we make it happen. This way, the client doesn’t have to be calling all over.” That special occasion or once-in-a-lifetime event is a lot more fun and enjoyable when you can press the easy button and let Whiplash Beauty & Company take the stress out of planning. Just in time for Holiday festivities, Whiplash Beauty & Company is now the only salon in Hot Springs to carry the full line of Kevin Murphy hair products. “We have been doing classes and going over the color formulations,” Adrianne explains.

“It’s an Australian company, a really good, all-natural, high-end product line.” Kevin Murphy’s award-winning career in the fashion industry inspired him to create eco-friendly products that nourish hair and skin alike, thanks to organic botanicals and amino acids. The formulations are paraben-free, sulfate-free and cruelty-free. Adrianne notes, “The products function very well, for every occasion and weather.”

CMS 8th Grader Excels in Congressional APP Challenge

Cutter Morning Star eighth grade student Canon Hale was determined to achieve his goal of placing in the Top 3 entries for the Congressional APP Challenge 2018-2019. This was Canon's second school year to enter the Congressional APP Challenge that is sponsored by Fourth District Congressman Bruce Westerman. When his Gifted and Talented Teacher, Deborah Giusti, assigned the project, Canon (then a 7th grader) was quick to come up with his idea of assisting people in the Natural State who like to hike and learn more about the identification of nature. After months of work and attending last year’s 2017 Congressional APP Awards event, Canon was disappointed that his APP was not selected but determined to continue working on his Seaatree.com APP. This school year when it was time to enter the competition, Canon rebuilt his Seaatree.com APP using WordPress, HTML, and JavaScript. The APP can tell if there are trees that are dangerous and trees people have found and pinned. Thanks to his hard work, he won 2nd Place! In the future, Canon will add augmented reality, also known as AR, to help with the experience.

National Park College announced the name of the Nighthawk mascot during halftime at the recent season opener for the men’s basketball team. Students, faculty, staff and the community submitted more than 250 nominations for consideration. A campus committee narrowed the selection to three choices, Nox, Talon and Blue. After a campus-wide vote, Nox the Nighthawk was selected by an overwhelming majority with nearly 50 percent of the votes cast. Nox is a Greek and Latin word meaning “night” and is also the Roman deity for night. Nox the Nighthawk represents the pride and spirit of National Park College both on campus and in the community. Nox will be present at all NPC athletic events, in area high schools, and at community events, including the annual Christmas parade.

The CMS High School Start-Up Team joined other high school start-up teams from around Arkansas in competition. Students identify and analyze real-world educational problems in the schools they attend, using student poll data to assist in solving this problem within time limits. Students worked in teams and were given prompts to accomplish the and making a presentation for the competition. For example, one team looked at flex scheduling vs. regular class scheduling, while another problem considered was school spirit or the lack. The result was a non-stop day with a working lunch and then the pitch to judges. A real life learning experience! The students again showed the need to be challenged and they stepped up to exceed expectations.

LIVING GREEN

Go Green for the Holidays Designs for Life with Julie Williams Text & Photos by Julie Williams

A

growing tradition for the Holidays is a living tree. A live tree—complete with roots intact—can be a longer lasting alternative to a cut or artificial tree. The choice to buy a live tree is one that can be enjoyed for years to come. Selecting a variety suited to your climate is a good way to ensure success when planting. Benefits of adding an evergreen to your landscape include year-round color, plus attracting wildlife and providing a nice windbreak. This year I selected a Blue Spruce for my Holiday tree. Living in Michigan as a child, I have always felt nostalgia when I see them. I placed holly berries intermittently—the red berries really make the blue pop! I then asked a friend (Steven Jones of Jonestead Jewels) to make some hanging crystal ornaments. These Arkansas quartz crystals resemble icicles and are unique to our region. Pulling design ideas directly from nature alleviates worrying about the decorations being affected by weather when your living tree is stationed

on the porch. And, rather than having to pack up ornaments at the end of the Holiday season, simply give away the crystals to friends. Look around for a creative place to put your tree, whether it’s indoors or out. And lastly, plant your tree for years of enjoyment. There are a few tips regarding living trees that are helpful to know so that you may plan ahead: 1) A living tree requires a period of a week or so to acclimate before being brought inside the home for the holidays. During this transition period, store your tree in a sheltered porch area before bringing it inside the home. 2) Choose a location in your home that is cooler—for example, avoid placing the tree near heating vents. 3) The tree may be watered each day using ice cubes—about a tray should suffice. This prevents overflow from watering and, most importantly, keeps the roots cooler. Research varieties of evergreen suited to your climate—it may also help to consult with the local Cooperative Extension office. You should consider where you would like to plant the tree in your yard once the 22

tree indoors should not exceed 10 days. After the Holidays, transition the tree to a semi-sheltered location for at least a few days. When transitioning the tree back outside, you can use it as porch decor. Your tree is ready to plant after the holidays— IF the ground is not frozen. If the ground is too hard, simply store your living tree in a sheltered location until spring. For planting, dig a hole larger than the root ball and line the hole with peat moss to insulate the roots and encourage spring root growth. Mulching will also help protect your newly planted tree. This year, consider a new tradition that will last generations: plant a live Christmas tree! Photo by AAron brewer

Holidays are past; depending on how large the tree will grow, spacing is crucial. Choosing a smaller tree allows it to be moved more easily and also allows flexibility for display in more areas of the house. A really small tree can also serve as a decorative centerpiece for a table. Bonsai trees, for example, are attractive year-round and fun to decorate during the Holidays. A living tree’s all-important root ball can be placed inside a pot or wrapped with a festive swag of fabric (be sure to place a drip tray underneath). The maximum amount of time you should keep your living

indy English and her daughter Lauren English-Britton both know (to use a phrase from Dickens) “how to keep Christmas well.” Their zest for life peaks during the holidays as Cindy and Lauren welcome friends and family to their homes, lovingly decorated in ways that reflect their personalities and shared family traditions. With a slew of family birthdays falling in December and January, “It’s a big season,” says Cindy. For the young at heart, wholly in agreement that there’s no such thing as overdoing Christmas, Cindy is an inspiration. “I

collect Christmas,” she says. Visitors arriving on her front step find a preview of what’s inside. The doorway is framed by a pair of silver stags; perhaps an ode to the deer that grace the forested hillside beyond the deck and enjoy nibbling her flowerbeds. Sprays of greenery and bright red berries make a vibrant archway, while a pair of massive urns holds birch-bark branches, standing guard in vivid black-and-white. In lieu of a wreath is a cluster of the largest pinecones I’ve ever seen. Hot Springs Life & Home | DECEMBER 2018 |

“Those are Sugar Pine cones from Louisiana—they keep well,” says Cindy, welcoming me inside where Lauren waits with Bunny, the family’s sweet Sh’ih Tzu. How does one pick a favorite tree? I decide it’s impossible, what with eight unique trees stationed throughout the home. From the foyer’s curved staircase, heavy with garlands, its majestic tree shimmering in red and gold, to the enormous wreath on the living room’s cathedral window, there is a feast for the senses. Cindy and her husband Tim designed the home with a light-stained, wood-paneled

barrel ceiling that spans the lofty living room. The illuminated space makes a magnificent backdrop for a Christmas tree, this one a symphony of red velvet ribbon and colorful Radko glass ornaments. Nearby, the formal dining room’s epic tablescape surrounds a centerpiece of bronze deer. Near the foyer is a music room with a cross-vaulted ceiling. The elegant space enshrines photographs of the generations and salutes the family’s Arkansas roots with a Razorback-themed tree. Continuing down the hallway, we enter the master suite, which

pays tribute to autumnal colors. The room’s accents of copper, chocolate brown and persimmon complement a sumptuous tree decorated in harvest hues. Soft music plays as we enter Cindy’s French Country-style kitchen and dining area, where her signature color, red, comes into its own during the Holidays. Artful place settings include dishware with portraits of Father Christmas. “Mom loves warm colors,” notes Lauren, who likes to decorate in a spectrum of cool colors— greens and blues and soft greys. She and Cindy share a fondness for certain designs, though, such as my new Christmas favorite: big, bold, bronzed clusters of magnolia leaves. Cindy offers a snack and Mountain Valley spring water, observing, “I taught school for years, and many of my students gave me Santa Claus figurines as gifts—this one is handmade.” Rows of festive Santas top the kitchen’s glass-fronted cabinetry, continuing the theme of “no two alike,” nestled amid evergreen boughs. There’s even a doctor Santa in honor of Tim. “Lauren loves

Christmas as much as I do,” Cindy says. Lauren replies, “I grew up decorating with mom—Christmas is in my blood!” Lauren’s brother Benjamin and his wife Alex live in Bentonville, where he keeps the holidays well in the Ozarks. “He and Tim love Christmas too,” Cindy says. Lauren recalls her mom decorating a tree just for her: “When I was little I wore hair bows a lot, and she decorated the tree in my room with my bows.” The kitchen fireplace’s white surround showcases a luxuriant earth-toned garland of natural elements, while a magnificent stag sculpture overlooks the mantel. Cindy, who has worked for Flowers and Home of Hot Springs since its opening in Cornerstone Shopping Center, says, “That’s my rescue stag from Flowers & Home—he had a little blemish on his antler.” She gave the objet d’art a home and year-round display. The Flowers and Home team helps Cindy decorate her home, as she no longer climbs tall ladders, and Cindy appreciates the help. dows, scarlet pinecone ornaments reflecting the light. Glass cardinals peer from flocked branches and a gentle glow emanates from lights in the shape of white porcelain birds. “These birds aren’t made any more,” explains Cindy. “They were a wedding gift to my husband and me 40 years ago. When we put them on the tree we know it’s Christmas!” In the spirit of continuity, Lauren’s Aunt Lin searched high and low for the delicate birds until she found a set for sale on Ebay. Aunt Lin gave Lauren and her husband Beau the set as a wedding gift last year; this year, Lauren and Beau are celebrating the first Christmas in their new home. Saying bye to Bunny, we head over to Lauren’s house to double our Christmas tour fun. On the way, Lauren reveals that Cindy was her secret weapon at the new house, a brick and stone structure built in 2006: “The original owners had it all done in dark wood trim with mustard-colored walls,” Lauren says. “Mom helped us decorate before we moved in.” With Lauren and Beau’s busy schedules—she works for Pinnacle Pointe

Behavioral Healthcare as a mental health therapist at Lakeside School and is the contemporary worship leader for the ConneXion service at First United Methodist Church, while Beau is a law partner at Wood, Schnipper and Britton— Cindy’s help was deeply appreciated. “Mom has an eye for reading people and knowing what they like and what fits their budget,” muses Lauren. Laughing, Lauren recalls coming home to find Cindy in the back yard spray-painting fixtures, but the results speak for themselves. Lauren’s kitchen, once a dull yellow with dark-stained cabinets, now features white cabinetry in delightful contrast to original black quartz countertops. Teal pendant lights pop against the new, lighter background. “They were already here—it worked great!” Lauren says. She updated by installing sleek gold metallic cabinet and

drawer pulls, and Cindy topped things off by painting the kitchen’s geometric light fixture gold. The Britton home revels in natural light thanks to new wall color—a subtle hue called “Lambswool” that Lauren notes is “the same as at Mom’s.” This barely-there color enhances a cool spectrum equally well, highlighting the home’s good bones—archways, crisp white trim and detailing. An exterior version of the color transformed the home’s facade, where formerly dark brick now harmonizes with stonework. Lauren’s dining room displays her favorite tree, spiraled in teal ribbon and bearing bold round ornaments of gold, blue and green. Framed by a tall slender window, the tree sparkles next to a glass-fronted white cabinet. Like Cindy, Lauren collects and displays art glass in jewel tones. She sets her holiday table with blue Delft plates, and the centerpiece—a single blue and white ginger jar—holds sprays of greenery. The minimalist color palette includes gray fabric chairs around a table of darker gray wood. As Cindy observes, “Do what you love. People think everything has to match perfectly—but with collections you can mix, and it works!” The floor plan includes seating areas divided by a see-through fireplace, with each mantel decorated in differing, yet harmonious, displays. One mantel’s cylindrical white vases hold bare branches over a garland silvered with frost, while the opposite side features vivid evergreens in a pair of tall silver urns. A nearby tree’s teal velvet ribbon traces oversized ornaments, white lights and ivory branches. “These blue glass ornaments are from mom’s collection,” says Lauren. “They were once on the Christmas tree in my childhood bedroom, which makes them even more special.” Blue

spruce garlands drape a silvery credenza, while the main living area’s dark gray leather couch and chair contrast a tree that shines like moon-glow. Interspersed with bronzed magnolia leaves, this tree is home to those aforementioned luminous porcelain birds that light the way for Christmas. “Our family’s faith and strength sustains us,” muses Cindy. “Christmas, to us, exemplifies this faith and hope for all things new.” The master bedroom features mirrored bedside tables and royal blue accents, with the en suite bath receiving a royal makeover by Cindy. She installed new tile flooring around the spa tub and swapped original dark countertops for white quartz with the look of marble: instant transformation. “I couldn’t find any round mirrors for less than $300,” says Cindy, a self-confessed “good shopper.” She swung into action, scoring a pair of large circular mirrors at less than half the price, thanks to a local craft store— but the frames were silver. So Cindy painted them gold! The outsized mirrors enlarge the space, reflecting a rondel of sapphireblue art glass as well as a painting Cindy chose, a vibrant design in Lauren’s beloved royal blue. The Brittons’ guest room is holiday-ready, its centerpiece an heirloom oak four-poster inherited from Lauren’s great-grandmother. “My grandmother loves staying here for Christmas,” says Lauren. “My mom helped bring light and color into our home. Beau and I love it.”

Emily

Kyle

K

yle Andrew Clem first saw Emily Elaine Hollingsworth at a 2015 Hot Springs Young Professionals shindig, a holiday event called the “Ugly Christmas Sweater Party.” He remembers that moment well, although he never even noticed Emily’s sweater: “I looked over and thought, who on earth is that and how do I get to know her?” he says with a grin. The two began dating, balancing their busy careers—Emily launched her own business, Hollingsworth Chiropractic and Acupuncture, in 2014, while Kyle works for database marketing company Axciom. An OBU grad, Kyle lived and worked for a time in Conway. “I had just moved back from Conway a few months before we met,” he recalls. The timing was right— and a little Christmas magic didn’t hurt, either. “I grew up in Newport and moved to Hot Springs after chiropractic school,” Emily explains. A graduate of the U of A in Fayetteville, Emily completed her chiropractic studies at Kansas City’s Cleveland University College of Chiropractic Medicine. Kyle’s family is a part of Spa City history: local landmark Peter’s Flooring & Paint has been in the Clem family for generations. “My granddad bought the business from Mr. Peters,” says Kyle. “My dad has it now. I grew up working there when I was kneehigh to a grasshopper.”

The Proposal

Fast forward to 2017: A few days before Christmas, Kyle devised a cool plan to surprise Emily with a proposal. “We both really like the historic down-

town area and the growth they’ve had there,” explains Kyle. “I thought the Christmas season would be an especially good time to be there.” During some lastminute Christmas shopping downtown, Kyle went to see a friend who works at The Waters Hotel. This architectural jewel, located in Hot Springs’ restored Thompson Building, had recently installed an eleva-

tor that carries guests to the rooftop. There, the view captures the city’s timeless charm, nestled amid forested mountains of the National Park. Kyle wanted that view! “I set it up with my buddy,” he says. “Emily and I would come in for a drink, and he would come over and talk to us, offer to show us the new rooftop bar area, give us a tour.” The mission was a go for

December 23rd. Emily recalls, “We spent that day in Little Rock at his grandparents’ family Christmas gathering, and I had no idea Kyle was up to anything.” That evening, at The Waters’ beautiful restaurant/bar, The Avenue, everything went as planned: Kyle’s friend came over and escorted the two up to the roof right around 5:30 p.m., when downtown’s Christmas

lights were beginning to glow against the deepening dusk. Emily was enjoying the view, checking out the rooftop herb garden and beehives, when suddenly Kyle’s buddy “got a phone call.” As Emily recalls, “He said he got a call and then just disappeared. It never occurred to me what was going on.” Not until Kyle knelt and produced an engagement ring, that is! And, with the magic of Christmas Eve-Eve in effect, Emily said yes. Kyle adds a bit of backstory at this point: The morning of the proposal, he’d stashed the engagement ring in his coat pocket. Throughout the rest of the day he kept

checking to make sure it was still there. Kyle grew so nervous that he refused to take off his coat, even indoors. “Emily and I were at the family Christmas gathering at my grandparents’ house,” explains Kyle. “My grandparents like to keep their home really warm. But I couldn’t risk taking off my coat because the ring was in the pocket—what if something happened? So I was sweating for more than one reason that day!”

Emily had a wedding gown in mind, a stunning Vera Wang design, but the closest store where she could try on the dress happened to be in Dallas. This obstacle turned out to be a bit of serendipity, because during the time leading up to the July 2018 wedding, Emily made monthly trips to Dallas for an amazing reason: she was studying and certifying to perform chiropractic adjustments on animals. Yes, Emily is officially a superhero: a pet chiropractor! “I do animal chiropractic,” she says. “I completed a course at Parker Chiropractic in Dallas, traveling back and forth the whole time we were planning our wedding.” Luckily, Emily had another superhero on her team: wedding planner Randi Slick of Signature Events. “Randi Slick did a great job, we couldn’t have asked for anything more,” says Emily. “And Bridgett Kincheloe, First United Methodist Church’s ceremony coordinator, had everything timed perfectly.” Their families joined in to share the joy, with Emily’s brother acting as groomsman and her sister-in-law as a bridesmaid. Meanwhile, Kyle’s two brothers were groomsmen, and his nephew made an adorable ring-bearer. “We had another ring-bearer too—my cousin’s little boy,” adds Emily. “My flower girl was the daugh-

ter of my best friend from high school.” The wedding took place in First United Methodist Church, where Kyle’s 92-yearold grandfather, Reverend Earl B. Carter, officiated. “That’s my mom’s dad,” says Kyle. “We also had Reverend David Wilson, who was my pastor growing up at First United Methodist.” Emily’s chosen colors—blue and white—were showcased throughout the wedding, from her bridesmaids’ gorgeous cocktail-length fitted dresses in the palest shade of blue, to soaring sprays of blue and white florals decorating the sanctuary. “I collect blue-and-white ginger jars and Delft pottery,” Emily explains. “My mom

and grandmothers always had blue and white pottery.” The reception at the Historic Hamp Williams Building featured tablescapes of blue and white ceramics and florals interspersed with vivid greenery, while sparkling raindrop lights added to the sublime ambiance. “Kelly Efird designed our flowers, and it was beyond anything we could have expected,” says Emily. “My bouquet was white peonies and lily of the valley, one of my favorite things from that day.” Within the bouquet, Emily incorporated silver charms framing miniature portraits of her late grandparents. She adds, “When I sent Kyle his wedding present before the wedding, I had

my aunt and my maid of honor surprise him with a picture of his late grandfather. My aunt sewed it into the inside of his jacket.” Emily notes that blue is Kyle’s favorite color too, and he and his groomsmen looked supremely sharp in handsome midnight-blue tuxedos. But let’s return for a moment to contemplate Emily’s todie-for Vera Wang wedding gown: “I saw a picture of it and loved it,” she says. “We had gone to a boutique where I tried on a couple of others, but it was the third dress I tried on and I was very happy with it.” Third time’s the charm, indeed: the white cap-sleeved dress features a lace overlay and fitted mermaid silhouette with a high, gently scooped neckline and chapel train. Paired with a flowing tulle veil, the effect was sheer elegance.

The Cake

“My mom and I got together with Kyle’s mom and my parents’ neighbor to watch the royal wedding,” says Emily. “And their neighbor brought a cake from Majestic Bakery & Café that we really liked.” The confection was one of Majestic Bakery’s gluten-free specialties, and when it came time to do tastings for the wedding,

Majestic’s wedding cake won out. “It was our favorite,” she says. “We had tons of people asking which bakery it was from— nobody knew it was gluten-free.” Emily and Kyle went with a twist on the groom’s cake, literally: “We had Will’s Cinnamon Twists,” Kyle reports. “They were awesome, a total success.” With Taco Mama catering the rehearsal dinner and Café 1217’s delicacies at the reception, guests were treated to standout Hot Springs cuisine.

The Honeymoon The newlyweds enjoy hiking, and jetted off to honeymoon in Banff National Park, Canada. “We had always talked of going there,” says Emily. She and Kyle traded the 90-plus-degree temperatures of Arkansas in July for Canada’s highs in the 60s and lows in 40s. “It’s the most beautiful place we’ve ever been,” sighs Emily. A favorite of the trip was the hike (30,000 steps according to their cellphone app!) to the top of a mountain called Big Beehive. “There’s a little teahouse halfway up the mountain,” says Emily. “When you got to the top you can see Lake Louise.” Kyle adds, “Pictures don’t do it justice.” The Clems are happily at home in Hot Springs, gearing up for the Holidays. Their neighbor’s pet has taken a shine to Emily, thanks to the occasional treat. “We’re getting ready for Christmas— we’re getting a real Christmas tree,” say the Clems. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Emily and Kyle!

Cinnamon Maestro Will

Byrd

TasTe of The Town:

will’s Cinnamon shop

By: Denise white parkinson

o

riginally from California, Will Byrd’s family moved to Hot Springs during Bill Clinton’s campaign for president. He met Katie, his wife-to-be, after she graduated from Henderson State University, and the two decided to raise their family here. “I have a degree in finance,” says Will, who works as a parts manager for Riser Ford. “Katie has a math degree and works at Weyerhauser—we aren’t the most likely bakery owners.” So how in the world did these two brainiacs crack the code behind the ultimate cinnamon roll? I headed downtown to Will’s Cinnamon Shop on a mission to find out. Will and Katie are furthering an auspicious trend that does Hot Springs proud: they have joined the ranks of young, business-savvy couples restoring the city’s historic architectural landscape. The Byrds undertook a renovation of downtown’s original bus station on Central Avenue, opposite the Central Theatre, and the results are glorious: Will’s Cinnamon Shop features an inspiring Art Deco exterior, a high-ceilinged

interior of exposed brick, ruddy and textural; and big beautiful picture windows. As I took it all in, my eyes were drawn to the source of a subtly wafting cinnamon-y zephyr. I spied a gleaming counter filled with cupcakes, muffins, cookies, brownies and twists—and an epic tray of cinnamon rolls! Daughter Kelli manages the family business; she was busy in the kitchen with Team Will, wrangling hundreds of goodies for the annual Taste of the Holidays fundraiser. Sarah, who runs the counter, handed me a mug of Red Light Roastery coffee, whose headquarters are just down the road on Park Avenue. There’s also an espresso machine at the ready and a wide variety of teas, even kombucha. Will’s Cinnamon Shop supports Arkansas family businesses; to that end they also carry Loblolly Ice Cream—celestial product! But this morning’s cold snap called for a cinnamon roll and hot black coffee, and a jolly good morning it turned out to be. Comfort food makes a home in its own

pyramid: a personalized tower of memorable dishes, heirloom recipes, enticing desserts. But as breakfast is called the most important meal, a cinnamon roll done right marks the sunrise of comfort food, a spell of bliss that can enliven the entire rest of the day. Perhaps my cinnamon roll obsession is due to those long-ago lunch ladies at Pulaski Heights Elementary, soft-spoken goddesses baking cinnamon rolls bigger than your head, filling the school hallways with delightful spice. All I know is on this blustery winter day I learned Will’s makes the best! And, paired with exquisite Red Light Roastery coffee, the balance of flavors and textures is sublime. These big fluffy buns are served warm and freshly iced, with a fork for excavating those stripes of cinnamon (playing with your food is a must). Icing comes in five flavors (everything at Will’s is customized, made to order and from scratch) and I chose the menu’s “regular” icing, which should be renamed “extraordinary.” I also sampled Will’s vanilla cream cheese icing (heavenly!) and look forward to tasting the coffee maple (Sarah’s favorite, also made with Red Light Roastery coffee). I am already anticipating Will’s cinnamon rolls topped with zesty lemon icing. And the orange icing—one must set achievable goals for the New Year, after all! Kelli emerged from the spacious kitchen to spill the beans on her dad’s cinnamon roll obsession. “Dad couldn’t find a cinnamon roll that he really liked, so he looked up some basic recipes and started experimenting,” she explains. “His first tries were like bricks,” she adds, laughing. For months, Will made adjustments to his recipe, trying out the results on fellow cinnamon-roll

obsessives. “I began hanging out in the garage with dad and baking cinnamon rolls,” says Kelli of Will’s home laboratory. “We baked together for six months.” You can read a bit of the story on Will’s to-go menus. He dates his Ah-Ha Moment to a 2016 visit to Chicago, when he and Katie happened to find a hole-in-the-wall spot that served amazing cinnamon rolls: “While I was sitting there I said, Hot Springs needs a place like this.” Before this epiphany, Will says, “I had never baked a thing that didn’t come out of a box.” The race was on! After months of trial and error, Will landed on the final recipe. “It hasn’t changed since,” he declares. And by September 2017, the Byrds were opening the doors of the handsome space they created, a space equal to their vision and their product. (Happy Anniversary, Team Will!) “I honestly still have a hard time calling myself a baker,” Will muses. “There are so many amazing bakers and chefs in this town that I don’t consider myself worthy to be mentioned in the same conversation with. Most of the ideas we have for the shop

Freshen Up Holiday Ente Add tasty, crunchy grapes to seasonal dishes

T

he holiday season is typically marked by gatherings of friends and family. Whether you're hosting overnight guests, drop-in visitors or an important seasonal meal, taking a fresh approach to the menu can make the get-together more special. As you prepare for the festivities, consider recipes that feature healthy ingredients such as versatile California grapes, which come in three vibrant colors - red, green and black - and can add a palate-pleasing crunch and plenty of taste to everything from main dishes to sides and even desserts. Heart-healthy grapes are also perfect on their own as a snack and their natural beauty can help enhance any table as an edible garnish or fresh centerpiece. Using grapes as a featured ingredient in your holiday dishes can provide a fresh twist on seasonal dishes, such as this Grape Dutch Baby or these Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Grapes and Balsamic Glaze. For dessert, use the natural sweetness of grapes to create a smooth Grape Caramel Sauce that can be served as a topping for ice cream or other seasonal desserts.

Seasonal Entertaining with Grapes While the beautiful, vibrant colors of grapes can add visual interest to recipes, they can also serve a variety of purposes when hosting:

• Grapes can make for easy decorations when placed in bowls, on platters or draped from a cake plate.

• Grapes can be "frosted" with sugar, spices and

chopped nuts then served as a finger food or used as a garnish to decorate cakes, cookies, puddings, mousses and other seasonal desserts. Simply dip grape clusters in liquid gelatin then roll in your desired mixture.

• Grapes make for a quick and easy hostess gift. Wrap multi-colored grape clusters in tissue paper then place them in a basket or tin tied with ribbon.

eff Taylor has lived in Hot Springs since 2001, and since 2006 he’s worked within the recovery community. He cofounded a ministry, Gethsemane Outreach, about four years ago to address the needs of homeless men here in Hot Springs. “Gethsemane was put together by Shane Robertson and Emery Beck,” says Jeff. “I’m a layman and Shane is our pastor; Mark West is also a member of our board.” Gethsemane Outreach’s transformative mission is to help get men off the streets and into healthy, productive lives. Gethsemane is a nonprofit that provides transitional living homes for men, with additional help that is as basic as it is important: Jeff and his team provide haircuts and showers. Jeff says, “We began offering barber services and a place where homeless men can come for a shower or haircut. We collaborate with a pair of great stylists from Curl Up & Dye Salon—Jodie Blackburn and Tiffany Brey—and do Haircuts for the Homeless.” Gethsemane’s team connects with the homeless through recovery meetings, hospital referrals and partner agencies. “Our goal is to help them get started in a new life,” says Jeff. Over the past spring and summer, Gethsemane Outreach (named for the Biblical garden) worked with Difference Makers of Hot Springs to undertake the restoration of Hot Springs’ original community garden, located at 124 North Palm Street. The men carefully tended and planted the acreage, building raised beds with donated bricks and growing free food for the surrounding community. Gethsemane’s program includes three transitional homes: Liberty House, Redemption House and Integrity House. “Our clients move through our program, progressing to greater freedom and responsibility,” explains Jeff. “Once they’ve been in the program six months, they can transition to Integrity House. They attend 12step meetings, and we work to help them gain employment.”

FAMILY DYNAMICS

Hospitality for the Holidays: Extreme Family Version Helpful advice for what to do if you don't like your significant other's family Text by Chris Vitale

F

or many, family is everything and their number one priority. But naturally not everyone will love them as much as you do. A significant other not liking the others’ family can strain a relationship, but it doesn’t have to. There’s a reason why meeting your significant other’s family members is a big deal for many couples: There’s always the possibility that you just won’t get along. At first you might not realize there’s anything wrong, especially if you’re used to making a good first impression. But if your partner’s family starts asking aggressive questions, avoiding direct contact with you, or generally acting disinterested in you, it could be a sign that they’re not your biggest fan. It works the other way, too: You may not get a good vibe from your potential in-laws. Maybe their quirky habits or beliefs are unbearable, or they’re so dysfunctional that you can’t have a conversation about anything without starting an argument. No matter the source, tension between you and your partner’s family can put a strain on your relationship. After all, you two don’t exist in a vacuum: Being with someone means committing to spending time with their friends and relatives. It may hurt your boyfriend or girl54

| Hot Springs Life & Home | DECEMBER 2018

friend to learn that you dislike the people they love, but if you want your relationship to progress, you have to be civil toward the people in their lives, even if you can’t stand some of them. If you’re in the unenviable (but quite common) position of not getting along with your significant other’s family, here’s how to improve the situation. 1. Talk To Your Partner About Your Concerns Don’t hide your true feelings or fears from your partner. If you don’t like their family, or worry that their family doesn’t like you, talk about it openly and honestly. Your partner might be able to shed some light on the situation, since they know their family best. This is a delicate conversation, so choose your words carefully. Avoid making accusations or bashing certain family members. Share your concerns in a straightforward but diplomatic way, and trust that your partner will be honest in return. 2. Find Some Common Ground Whether you get along or not, you’re probably going to have to see your partner’s family on occasion, even if it’s just over the holidays. When the time comes, it’s good to be prepared with some light, pleasant conversation topics

that could potentially give way to bonding. Before your next visit, do a bit of research on your partner’s family. Look at their social media accounts to see if you have any common interests or tastes you can discuss, like movies, music, sports, food, etc. Honest, genuine efforts to get along with someone are often recognized and rewarded – and even if it fails to land, at least your partner will see that you’re trying. 3. Never Force Your Partner To Choose Between You And Their Family The fastest way to ruin a relationship is to give your partner an ultimatum. Asking your significant other to choose between you and their loved ones will make them feel caught in the middle and they may end up resenting you for it. If you absolutely need to draw a line in the sand about not seeing your partner's family, allow your s.o. to continue the relationship with their family. Remember, it’s not the end of the world if your partner’s parents don’t like you. Have open, honest conversations about the root issues causing tension between you and the family. Then, try to course-correct and get along for your partner’s sake. You may not feel the love, but in time, you may grow to like each other.

Caton’s Cubs

A mother’s journey to help others during a time of grief and loss.

T

he Holidays bring joy and togetherness, but for many families this time of year can also bring sharp sorrows as we remember loved ones no longer with us. After Hot Springs resident Lisa Rose Jones suffered the loss of her 19-year-old son Caton Jones, she created a unique way to honor his memory and to help other families of Arkansas Hospice patients. On the morning of January 8, 2016, while home on break from Arkansas State University, Caton was traveling to work as a passenger when an accident led to what most thought would be fatal. But Caton's warrior spirit would not allow him to stop fighting. For months, he persevered through the recovery of multiple life-threatening injuries. While in rehab, cancer was discovered in Caton's jaw. On November 9, 2016, Caton lost the battle with cancer, but claimed the final victory by entering into eternity with his Lord. “I started a scholarship in Caton’s name at Kappa Sigma Fraternity at ASU in Jonesboro,” says Lisa. During the time Caton spent in Arkansas Hospice care, his sister recorded the sound of his heartbeat on a smart phone. The family transferred the recording to an electronic “heart” inside a teddy bear, and the concept of Caton’s Cubs was born. Partnering with Arkansas Hospice, the Jones family and generous donors have since then provided these personalized teddy bears to families of Arkansas Hospice pediatric patients. The human heartbeat is more unique than even a fingerprint, an underlying rhythm that defines each cherished life. 56

| Hot Springs Life & Home | DECEMBER 2018

Arkansas Hospice serves more than 30 pediatric patients annually, and the Caton’s Cubs program allows purchase of plush teddy bears and Doppler devices to detect a patient’s heartbeat. The sounds are transferred to heart-shaped speakers that replay the beats whenever the bear is hugged and squeezed. As Arkansas Hospice pediatric care coordinator Wendy Rice notes, “When they squeeze the bear and hear the heartbeat for the first time, tears of appreciation and joy flow.” “The response to Caton’s Cubs has been incredible,” says Lisa. “Donations and ‘shares’ on social media, and telling your friends and family about the program, ensure that Caton’s Cubs are given to every family with a child under the care of Arkansas Hospice.” You can find out more by visiting www.catonscubs.org, or following on Facebook at Caton’s Cubs.

T

winkling lights, festive soirees, family gatherings, wrapping paper and bows inspire me to get glowing for the Holidays. What about you? Here are my go-to steps for creating the perfect Holiday Glow: Find your favorite exfoliant to reveal your brightest, healthiest skin. Moisturizing ingredients penetrate deeper into the skin when dead skin cells have been removed from the top layer of the epidermis. After you exfoliate, apply a hydrating face mask. Look for Hyaluronic acid which holds 100x its weight in water and Vitamin C to amp up brightening. Most masks are left on clean skin for 5-10 minutes and are removed with warm water. Easy Peasy. Hydrated skin is healthy skin! Slick on a silicone based primer to create a smooth palette for foundation, concealer, and/or powder. Primers do exactly what you would expect, prime the skin before makeup by balancing out texture, tone, and minimizing the appearance of pores. Highlighter! This is the can’t miss step right here. I prefer a cream based highlighter as it is easy to apply and provides the perfect amount of shimmer to highlight your best features. Blend by patting product onto the tops of the cheekbones, above and below the brow bone, down the center of the nose, and above the lip. Get your glow on and sparkle, shimmer, and shine brighter than all the twinkling lights. Cheers to Your Skin Health!
